6 Platforms for Writers to Sell Articles

If you’re sitting on some articles that aren’t seeing daylight, we might have the answer for you.

For one reason or another, many writers have unused articles in their files. This is common among writers who use a freelancing platform like Fiverr or UpWork. The client will either refuse the work or cancel the order after the writing is finished. The result is an article that’s only lost money.

If you can’t find another market for them, you can try article buying and selling sites. For most of these sites, the process is simple: You upload your article and put it up for sale. Someone comes along and purchases it. The site will take a portion of the profit, but you get to keep most of it.

The positive of such sites is their wide customer base. They can take your writing to different corners of the world and get it sold to people you’d otherwise never reach. The negative, of course, is the uncertainty. There’s no guarantee you’ll ever sell the article.

A warning: Some article-selling sites can be shady and unreliable. If you’re looking at using a site that’s not on this list, we recommend you to research any such site before you sell there. Read user reviews and see how transparent the site is. When in doubt, it’s best to stay away.

  • Constant Content

Constant Content follows the simple buy-and-sell model outlined above. You post your article for sale, and an interesting buyer will purchase rights to it. Writers go through an editor-approved application process that requires a sample article to be written.

There are two main methods to sell content. You can either add it to the site’s catalog or respond to custom content requests from buyers. You receive 65% of the article’s selling price.

Hubpages is another well-known site. You sign up and post your original content in a format similar to a blog. You (and the site) make money by ad revenue, and you’re required to have a Google AdSense account.

You’ll need a minimum of $100 to cash out. Since the site relies on ad clicks, it may take some time to reach the threshold. However, Hubpages does give you a way to get your content out quickly. It has the potential to draw attention even if it’s not making you instant money.

  • swarmcontent

swarmcontent is a newly established addition to the article-buying scene. They allow you to submit unpublished blog articles to their marketplace. They boast their unheard-of policy where writers receive 100% of the profit. They don’t take any commission, though PayPal may take some fees.

swarmcontent accepts a variety of article types, from white papers to how-to guides. They work with a hierarchy wherein writers receive titles based on how many articles they’ve sold. They also offer several resources for writers, including actionable blog posts. They’re definitely worth a look if you want to sell unique, unpublished articles.

Dot Writer is quite similar to Constant Content but offers some features you may like. Writers receive 80% of the sale and only need $10 to cash out via PayPal. Like swarmcontent, they use a hierarchical system that gives you advanced titles as you sell more articles.

However, they choose how much you get paid. Standard level writers earn 2 cents a word; Premium writers earn 4 cents a word; and Gold writers earn 6 cents a word. They do have an affiliate program opportunity that they say can generate up to $500 a year. This is a good option to explore if you’re selling articles on the side of your regular job.

  • Ghostbloggers Update: We are no longer recommending GhostBloggers, based on feedback from our readers.

Ghostbloggers provides many of the perks that other sites provide. They take 30% of the selling price, and writers who choose the standard pricing model earn $3.50 per 100 words ($19.25 for 550 words). You only need $25 to cash out via PayPal.

However, they add some restrictions: They forbid contact between writers and clients, and all copyright passes permanently from the writer to the client upon purchase. If you’re okay with complete anonymity, then this option is for you.

  • Articlesale

Articlesale takes a straightforward approach to article selling. It’s free for both buyers and sellers, so the site doesn’t take any commission. It’s a breeze to browse available articles and submit your own.

While the site doesn’t provide any details about what writers can charge, current articles are selling in the $2 to $5 range. Like Ghostbloggers, you have to permanently sell exclusive rights to the piece. To learn more, read their writers’ page.

Content writing and production is timely but a must for a growing blog or business. This article will share with you different places that you can buy articles as well as done for you content that covers more than just articles. This includes social media updates, graphics, ebooks, checklists, sales pages, lead magnets and much more.

Recently in my Facebook Group Help a Blogger Out , I opened office hours and asked members to share a current blogging struggle that they’d like help with.

I do this every now and then so that we can all share and help each other out because blogging can be a lonely journey especially if you are privileged enough to do it from home. 

One of the common themes coming out of the thread was content creation. If you’re a blogger with a full-time job or other obligations, it can be hard to carve out time to create content to keep your blog business afloat. 

But content is so important to our business, it is the bottom line. It’s what keeps our community engaged and coming back. 

With this in mind, I believe it is one of those things I believe in investing in if you can and if making money from your blog is important to you. 

Now, I don’t think you should spend money all willy-nilly until your blogging business can support itself and even then all business owners make smart decisions. 

However I also believe that you do have to spend some money to make some money. Any kind of business that you’re in, you’ll have to buy supplies to keep you going and you’ll have to pay for services that help you to run your business better.

Of course, I believe in strategy above all and I will discuss how you can strategically outsource some of your content creation to help proper your business into more profits. 

Why You May Want to Buy Articles and Done For You Content

When I buy articles, I do it because I have an idea or topic that I want to blog about but want to get it up and done in the quickest time possible. 

Buying done for you content makes it quick and easy to take someone else’s work, edit it to my liking and branding and get it up and out quickly so that I can focus on something else that will bring in more money. 

Another reason that I may buy articles is when it pertains to something that I want to write about but do not have personal experience with the topic. This means that I will have to spend many hours researching other sources to gather my information that I can then compile into an article. 

Instead, I source an article on the topic that I can easily flesh out more in much shorter time than it would take me to start from scratch. 

This also works for things like crafts, DIY content and even recipes. 

Food, mommy-bloggers and home decor bloggers spend a lot of time creating these projects for their blogs. Others, simply purchase the entire done-for-you pack with the progress pictures and finished pictures to go along with it. 

Doesn’t that sound like a dream? In that instance your job is to make sure that the craft or project is an SEO or Pinterest-ready project and that you can find affiliate products to promote using the article and boom, you’re in the money.

What is Done For You Content?

So I keep going back and forth between the ability to buy articles and done for you content. Is there a difference? Yes there is. 

Done for you (DFY) content has everything all wrapped up in a pretty bow. In the above examples, you could purchase a whole Halloween party decor article for instance, complete with all the pictures necessary to complete the article. 

To go even further, there is done for you content that includes a digital product for sale, a freebie lead magnet to give away to your readers to turn them into subscribers, email followups so that you know what to send to these subscribers to lead them to your sales page, sales page copy and graphics and even social media blurbs to help you to promote this product.

For bloggers who are scared of going through the daunting task of product or course creation, this is a quick and easy way to get through the door. 

All you have to do is edit the done for you content to suit your blogging voice and personality and branding. 

Life coaches, coaches, health coaches and even business coaches use these whole DFY packs in their business to attract customers. The point is that in the coaching industry, coaches would probably rather spend their time in their 1-on-1 or group coaching sessions with their client than actually writing articles. 

However they need this content for their websites, IG pages and Facebook groups as content is an important part of attracting more clients. 

This way, they get that out the way really quickly. 

Where Can I Buy Articles and DFY Content?

There’s content for every budget out there but with all the pricing points comes different things to look out for. Let’s start with what I call premium content. 

Premium Content Writing Agencies

If you do a quick Google search for “articles for sale” the top content writing agencies will flood the first page. 

These are agencies with premium writers on the payroll that pass through rigorous entry points to get accepted as freelance writers. These agencies promise articles that are free from plagiarism and written to the highest grammar and vocab standards. 

Premium equals big bucks as well. I have seen single articles quoted as high as $250. It may be worth it if you need a well researched piece written by an expert in a field. 

Other premium content agencies have cheaper pricing and you’ll be able to grab an article for a buck or two on sale, or $5 – $10 regularly. 

Facebook Groups for Writers

As you know, there’s a Facebook group for everything and FB groups are actually great resources for growing a blog .

There are a bunch of freelance writers that hang around in Facebook groups as well, peddling their wares. 

They will list titles that are for sale and send it to you via email within three days after purchase. 

These are usually also other bloggers and so most of them know what a fellow blogger is looking for in an article. 

You’ll also be able to find DFY content in these groups like round-ups already done and ready to be published, recipes, crafts and other types of content. 

Some of them even provide recipe recreation services. This means that if you’ve come up with a recipe but you’re not the best at taking photographs, they will recreate you recipe with high-quality photos for you. 

PLR Articles and DFY Content

Another popular place to pick up content is through writers that offer PLR services. PLR means private label rights. This means that when you purchase the article, ownership rights pass to you and you can so almost whatever you want with it. 

Some of them even come with MRR – master reseller rights – so you can even sell back this content if you wish. 

What I like about PLR content is the price. You can pick up a pack of 20 different articles on a topic for $5. You can pick up a whole DFY digital product and sales funnel for $20. 

The danger with PLR products is how wide it is spread. These articles are sold to thousands of people who may all be using them word for word on their own blogs. 

To avoid this, it’s important that you rewrite or deeply edit PLR articles that you purchase. 

I like to use them as ideas on a topic or for content that will not be on my blog. Maybe I will compile them into a mini-ebook to use as a freebie email optin or social media content. 

Still, it’s so much easier to start with an article that’s already been written, rewrite a few paragraphs. add more to it for additional information and SEO purposes (since PLR articles tend to be around 500-700 words) package it well and send it out there into Internet-land. 

Take the time to vet your PLR provider to ensure they write quality articles that are original.

Fiverr or other Freelance Websites

Fiverr, Upwork and the likes vary slightly from premium content agencies. These are websites where individual freelance writers sign up and market themselves instead of the agency doing the bulk of the marketing work. Kinda like eBay for services. 

A quick search on Fiverr for the term articles and blog posts reveal thousands of freelance writers to sift through. 

Again, you may still want to rewrite article purchased from writers or run them through Google or a service such as Copyscape to ensure that there is no duplication or plagiarism. 

Your Business Priorities

When you start to blog for profit, like any other business you need to determine what your priorities are and decide how you will keep on top of them. 

Content creation is the meat of a blogging business and shouldn’t be allowed to slip below your usual production for very long. 

If at the very least you choose not to purchase pre-written content, put a solid blogging schedule in place to create your own content so that you always have a bulk of content ready to be published. 

Maybe that means batch-writing, maybe that means content repurposing on those days when you’re stretched for time or maybe that means sacrificing time elsewhere to just get it done.

Be careful on FIVERR. Test them with small jobs and check for plagiarism. I had one writer who clearly communicated over email but the article was obviously written by someone with no knowledge of English. In another case I got a great article but when I checked for plagiarism it was cut and pasted from Wikihow! There are good writers on FIVERR but you need to check it out carefully.

As noted by AdWeek , “Consumers have flat-out become fatigued with the standard fare historically represented in brand marketing.” Companies must find a way to create content that breaks the mold, engages potential customers and ultimately drives increased revenue.

And, with over 70 percent of companies outsourcing content creation, finding the best outsourcing option is critical in today’s environment.

When it comes to blogging, buying pre-written articles or ordering custom-created articles  offer a way for companies short on time, expertise or capacity to quickly scale up, but what’s the best route? Are pre-written pieces the best investment, or does custom creation provide better returns?

Let’s dig into the pros, cons — and everything else — that comes with buying articles.

The Content Conundrum

Recent research shows that companies are struggling with content management. As the Content Marketing Institute points out, 72 percent of organizations say they’re “challenged with managing content strategically,” and 61 percent point to their top challenge as a lack of skilled staff to ensure content meets expectations and marketing is effective across channels.

Beyond a reliable content pipeline and the ability to ensure content regularly reaches customers, businesses also need to make sure that what they’re producing engages and excites users. In a content-rich market, potential consumers won’t bother stopping for articles, case studies or white papers that don’t immediately grab their attention and offer actionable information.

According to Business 2 Community , the sheer volume of available content now means that, “Even if you’re filling your site with countless blog posts jam packed with stellar written content, you may still be disappointed.”

Because well-written content is no longer enough to grab attention. It must also offer something unique to consumers; something they haven’t seen before.

Pre-Written Versus Content Development Services

To reach consumers and drive revenue, companies must find article sources that are reliable, high-quality and in alignment with business expectations.

There are two broad types available: Pre-written content and custom-created articles.

Pre-written articles are exactly what the name says: Already written, ready to be purchased and posted.

There’s also a subset of pre-written pieces known as private label rights (PLRs). As noted by Medium, what makes PLR pieces unique is the associated licensing. Companies can edit articles and change author attribution as needed. They can also resell the articles and basically do whatever they want with them.

Often you’ll find PLR articles in packages offering dozens for a surprisingly low price. The reason they’re so affordable is that the seller is selling the package to many people, so you can’t be sure your content is unique.

Custom content, meanwhile, is typically governed by resell rights that let companies keep 100 percent of the profits if content is resold via gateways or as part of subscription services but limits the ability of businesses to change author attributions or modify content. In general, ownership and attribution rights are typically bound by the service agreement you establish when working with your writer.

Over the past few years, pre-written content use has declined while custom writing services have enjoyed a significant uptick. Part of the change stems from evolving search engine algorithms, which tend to prioritize unique, never-before-seen content over similar articles tweaked just enough to suit businesses needs.

Social media also plays a role in this shift. Social giant Facebook now claims over 1.47 billion daily active users as of June 2018, making it more important than ever for companies to deliver content that’s easily consumable, provides a unique perspective and compels users to share it with friends and coworkers. This content needs to engage users — and be unique.

But, there’s still a case for pre-written and PLR content, since it lets organizations quickly customize and repurpose content as required.

For example, a single blog post can be purchased immediately and posted across corporate blogs, social media sites and leading industry publications. For companies looking to keep up with the pace of content consumption, PLR provides a viable solution in a pinch.

Pre-Written (and PLR) Pros

Let’s dig a little deeper. Beyond the basics, what are some of the key benefits associated with pre-written pieces?

  • No waiting time:  Pre-written marketplaces are full of already-written articles waiting to be claimed. You don’t need to create a content brief, find a writer, conduct edits and finally make payment — available articles are complete and ready to use.
  • See before you buy:  Since these pieces are already written, you can view and evaluate them before making a purchase. While this does mean some time spent searching article inventories, it makes it possible to find content that aligns with content strategies before making a purchase.
  • Evergreen offerings: PLR generally only works for evergreen content (newsworthy content has a very short shelf life), since it’s been written previously and designed for on-demand modification. Many sites offer deals on evergreen content, helping to fill gaps in your content strategy or flesh out your website with articles that remain relevant over time.
  • Volume discounts:  If you’re willing to purchase large volumes of articles at once, it’s often possible to find bulk discounts. It makes sense. Pre-written content is often sold to many customers, so sellers can earn more money selling discounted content to multiple buyers instead of charging full price to one.
  • Makes it easy to jump-start content campaigns:  As noted by Forbes , “You don’t need 15 pre-written articles to launch. You just need one.” Choosing an article that covers one high-level, relevant topic can jump-start blogs or other offerings while content strategists develop next steps. The instant availability of pre-written articles also makes it easy to quickly build out campaigns across multiple social channels.

Drawbacks of PLR and Pre-Written Content

While buying pre-written articles can help get campaigns off the ground and streamline content deployment, they also come with potential drawbacks, including:

  • Lack of specificity:  Pre-written content wasn’t created for your brand in particular but rather based on current search and social media trends in your industry. This means PLR articles are inherently off-brand and must be either used as “filler” content or modified to empower brand-driven engagement.
  • Higher cost:  While the basic cost of a PLR piece is less than one produced by custom content writers, it may be more costly in the long run. Why? Because making it useful for your brand often requires significant revisions and updates, meaning staff must spend time — which costs you money — to ensure pre-written articles meet expectations.   • Minimal SEO focus:  Your SEO differs from other brands and similar companies in your industry. Pre-written articles may provide general SEO targeting but don’t identify specific searcher intent or address semantically related topics, making these pieces potentially less valuable than they appear.
  • Lack of Unique Content:  Look at 10 pre-written pieces for the same topic, and they’ll bear strong similarities. In the case of PLR articles, they might even be identical. While they’ll be different enough to pass basic plagiarism checks, this content won’t stand out from the crowd.
  • Missing Links:  PLR and pre-written content isn’t designed with your business in mind, so it won’t contain any links to product pages, other blog articles or thought leadership pages. You can embed these links, but this may require significant restructuring to ensure articles don’t lose readability.
  • Quickly out of date:  Pre-written content is continually created to match potential needs, meaning it may be weeks or months old. Considering the velocity and volume of big data and the speed of social trends, PLR pieces can quickly outlive their usefulness.
  • Limited applicability: Companies must now manage multiple channels and content streams to ensure they’re reaching the right customer base. Pre-written articles are often too broad and generic to drive interest across diverse content channels.

Final Thoughts

Pre-written pieces have potential — they’re an easy way to fill in gaps in your content calendar and give you the power to change author attributions to suit business needs.

Content development services, however, have largely overtaken pre-written marketplaces as organizations recognize the need for unique, high-quality articles that deliver targeted SEO and compelling content.

The main advantage of buying pre-written articles is that you can buy them and post them instantly. This is certainly appealing, but with the extra time you need to spend editing and making the content fit your brand, it might actually take longer.

The family behind Nordstrom, the 123-year-old department store, announced on Wednesday that it was offering $3.8 billion to take the company private. The company, founded in Seattle, is led by a fourth generation of Nordstroms.

A little over a week ago, Nordstrom had reported strong second-quarter earnings , and its shares are up around 25 percent this year. But the company’s shares are down around 27 percent over the past five years. In March, the company forecast weak sales for 2024, though it raised its outlook for the year slightly in the latest earnings report.

Nordstrom, like many retailers, is trying to ride changing economic winds. Early in the pandemic, consumer spending was strong. But years of high inflation have since taken their toll, and consumers are spending less on items like dresses and handbags, the bread and butter for many department stores. Macy’s, the largest department chain in the United States, announced in February that it planned to close around 150 stores over the next three years.

A group of investors led by Erik Nordstrom, the company’s chief executive, and his brother Pete, the executive vice president, are leading the effort to acquire Nordstrom for $23 per share. That offer is less than 1 percent higher than the company’s closing price on Tuesday, the day before a filing revealed the bid.

“The lack of any real premium would, under normal circumstances, make the offer unattractive,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of the consulting firm GlobalData Retail. But, he added, things could be different for a family-run company like Nordstrom.
