To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

There is a growing debate as to whether some courses such as mathematics and philosophy should be optional in lieu of mandatory since many young learners find these subjects strenuous. In the case, I put forward the view that these subjects ought to be obligatory.

To commence with, there are myriad reasons in favour of mathematics to be compulsory in preliminary education. The most prominent one is problem-solving skills set. Mathematics teaches how to think critically and logically about a situation; which in turn hones children’s competencies such as analytical ability, reasoning, problem-solving ability, creativity and even effective communication skills to mention but a few. Apart from it, these skills set underpin the study of other subjects. That is to say that mathematical procedures and notions are used to solve the problems in physics, geography, economics, computer science, accounting to name but a few. For instance, the knowledge of complex number is essential used to clarify many concepts in Electronics. Therefore, mathematics is the language of science.

Likewise, philosophy is of profound importance for young learners. The word stems from Greek words meaning love of wisdom. Philosophy uses the lens of reason and logic to analyze the approach in which we experience the world. Therefore, introducing philosophy to pupils at a young age provides them with a great opening to cultivate their sense of astonishment. Accordingly, it helps develop children’s’ ability to ponder on big question and think independently. A growing number of researches has discovered that children who participate in philosophy class once a week considerably boost their literacy and math skills.

In conclusion, mathematics and philosophy inculcate in children the attitude of reason, logic, curiosity, and so forth. Therefore, these subjects ought to be introduced into the preliminary curriculum.

SAMPLE ANSWER: 279 words - Band 6.5 to 7.0

Many argue that children should be allowed to choose what kind of subject they want to study. In particular mathematics and philosophy are considered too hard for school children. I completely agree with this statement and in this essay I will explain my point of view and give some examples from my experience.

Firstly, children should have a choice to select what kind of subject they will learn. Some subjects are boring and difficult, philosophy for example is too complicated for young children, it is similar to religion and the textbooks are not clear even for adults. For instance, when I was at university, I studied philosophy for one year. However, by the end of that time I didn’t feel that I understood anything from my professor or the books he forced us to read. As a result, I feel I wasted my time and my money.

Furthermore, new subject are more exciting and more important than these boring ones. Nowadays, everybody must learn about information technology and our computers and calculators can do the mathematics calculations for us. Therefore, children do not have to learn boring subjects such as mathematics any more. For example, my children are learning how to make applications at their primary school and they use their laptop computers at school for every subject. My son laughs when I ask him if he can calculate. He says, he doesn’t need it because he designed and application which can calculate for him.

In conclusion, I completely agree that students should have an opportunity to select the subjects which they need or find interesting because they have a wider range of interesting choices and more advanced technology.

Technological advancements have caused a change in the way people do shopping. Over 1 million of purchases a day are made only on Amazon and eBay. It has become more common for customers to read reviews on the product, order things online and wait for the delivery at home. The tendency for internet shopping brings not only a possibility to choose from a wide variety of things but also saves our precious time.

One clear benefit that accrues from the e-commerce development is that customers can receive more information on the product, compare the quality and prices on other items and to choose the most suitable offer according to the budget. The most demanding individuals are in search of high-quality items at reasonable prices. For instance, such popular online stores as AliExpress, or eBay offer a number of different things at low prices that any person can find something useful.

Admittedly, nowadays people are pressed in time due to the tight work schedule, traffic jams and personal plans and not always have extra time to spend on doing groceries. Online shopping brings one more benefit for customers as saving their time. A person can order products from any supermarket just in several clicks and choose the time for delivery, in addition, some online stores offer free shipping and delivery that attract even more clients.

To sum up, the development of technologies has changed the way people do shopping enormously. It has brought many benefits for individuals as the ability to select things from a variety of different stores and to define the best offers as well as the possibility to spend time on more important duties such as self-development or family rather than shopping. 

Mathematics is a necessity to be well-established in business. Although there is little truth in this claim, I personally believe that it is not an absolute necessity.   Those who decry this claim point out the importance of mathematics as a fundamental concept for business ventures. Mathematics involves dealing with finances, profits, losses, and economic data that mainly constitutes the framework of business and therefore it is pertinent for a business individual to grasp the knowledge of mathematics to progressively understand the nuances of their establishments. For instance, when starting a business, one should estimate the gains and losses in the starting months in order to attract potential investors. As a result, one can benefit more as compared to someone who lacks an understanding of mathematics.   Nonetheless, most businesses require mathematics as a supporting element and instead, thrives on business management skills. There are many individuals from uneducated backgrounds that possess sharp intellectual minds, like making uninformed decisions promptly or offshoring and outsourcing their unique ideas for expansion, that creatively makes them economically more well-established as compared to one who only possesses mathematical skills. For instance, Mustafa, a famous store in Singapore, was first started as a textile shop by an uneducated individual but now, he expanded it into a three-levelled store ranging from jewelry to spices. Therefore, by honing the right business qualities, one can manage the ups and downs of businesses more effectively.   To encapsulate, though mathematics might seem the basics for businesses, it is not the main promising factor and also requires business capabilities to be successful. One should, however, be equipped with strong competence to excel further.

It is obvious that few subjects are supposed to be extremely hard for some students like Mathematics and Philosophy , hence all of these should legislate as optional choices instead of being mandatory. Personally I thoroughly disagree with that idea with a number of reasons which will be outlined in this essay.

On the one hand, both Math and Philosophy actually have some benefits in current and upcoming life of students . In reality, Math plays a essential role to give knowledge about calculating and setting up their independent thoughts which are tremedously handy for them in forthcoming career. Philosophy partly contributes substantial usefulness to help shape their ideology properly as long as political viewpionts which particularly require for a grow-up in the future. To sum up , both of which are regarded as the useful tools even a minority of learners will pursue a field which is not related to these subject as they truly need benefits and vital skills before making a decision to choose any field of their demand occupation.

On the other hand, there are a plethora of other subjects which should be proposed to add to the current curriculum and ethics simultaneously become a good option though. To begin with, this kind of subject preachs and explains to learners about experiences in social gestures and politeness. Furthermore , pupils are gradually changed in the way of attending any conversations with anybody and conscious of the profound importance of how good manners espeacially influence their work and relevant relationship. I think you might score a solid 5 band score on the IELTS test though I don’t think exams like the IELTS have much relevance any longer. For example, I don’t think your goal in life is to achieve a certain IELTS band because nobody really cares about it.

Lately, the content of the curriculum in some universities is becoming a topic of public interest. There is a school of thought holds that the theoretical subjects should be removed from the curriculum because the student’s preferences are practical lessons. Although this belief has many benefits, I am convinced that it does more harm than good. There are many compelling advantages of abandoning mathematics and philosophy in the university. Firstly, thanks for reducing the number of subjects, students can ease the colossal study pressure, which leads to depression, even suicides. Secondly, instead of learning something which is considered useless, they have a chance to spend their time and attempt to widen knowledge and practical skills in their main major. Moreover, spare time is also used for other purposes, such as: doing a part-time job for income, traveling and exploring new activities as a recreational purpose and enlarging their grasp. Notwithstanding the aforementioned advantages, removing theoretical subjects can have a huge adverse bearing on students as well as society. It can be easily observed that modern science, technology, and utilities are the results of historical theories, which are contained in theoretical subjects. Learning these kinds of subjects acts as a precursor to the deep understanding of the origins of both advanced devices and social problems. Moreover, seizing all these theories is a major contributor for students to easily figure out the solutions in practical circumstances. In conclusion, absorbing all the meanings of theoretical subjects is a vital determinant in which students can apply these things to pressing problems and practical programs. I am totally convinced that universities shouldn’t remove theoretical subjects from the curriculum
