Kalpana Chawla’s Death
It was believed that a piece of insulation that detached from the main external tank during the launch struck the space shuttle’s wing. As a result of this damage, a hole developed on the wing, resulting in the loss of sensors and ultimately Columbia itself. The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated on February 1, 2003, as it re-entered the atmosphere.
The event was recorded by people on the ground with cameras and other military and government facilities. Together with the six other members, Kalpana’s bones were cremated and dispersed in Utah’s Zion National Park.
