Band 9 sample essay about international sporting events
Home » IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS » Band 9 sample essay about international sporting events
Some people believe that international sporting events are the ideal opportunity to show the world the qualities of the hosting nation. Others believe that these events are mainly a large unjustifiable expense. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Global athletic events such as the Olympics, the World Cup, the Extreme Games, and even the American Super Bowl are incredible opportunities for countries. These iconic spectacles can provide a country with an economic avalanche of benefits or expose it to a public relations disaster. This essay will look at both points, using Russia and the United Kingdom as examples.
Firstly, it is important to bear in mind that simply hosting the event and having the world’s media attention cannot guarantee a positive promotion. This is because although the country is receiving enormous amounts of publicity, the media will often report controversial news as well as.
Take the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, for example. The media spotlight is shining bright on the athletes but also highlighting the polemic legislation regarding homosexuality. Therefore, despite the international recognition to be gained, the country can also face a possible backlash.
Secondly, the expense of building large infrastructures necessary to hold these events can dwarf the benefits, unless they are fully amortized afterwards. This is largely due to the fact that stadiums, Olympic parks, ski runs etc. are expensive to construct and undertake large capital expenditure, often by the public sector.
In the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002, the council commissioned a stadium for athletic events which was later adapted and sold to the local preeminent football club, Manchester City. Therefore with proper, fair, economic management of such buildings and facilities the cost can be recuperated.
To conclude, a host city or nation has a lot to gain from these events but only if they are economically administered correctly and the country has no controversial issues for the media to pull out of the closet.

The Integral Role of Sports in Society: a Persuasive Argument
How it works
- 1 Introduction

- 4 Mental Well-Being and Academic Performance
- 5 Conclusion
Introduction
Sports have always been a big deal in our culture and society. They’re not just about staying fit but also about making friends and growing as a person. From the old Olympic Games to today’s huge international events, sports have become a big part of our lives, affecting our economies, cultures, and individual stories. But even with their popularity, sports often don’t get the credit they deserve, especially in schools where grades and academics are the main focus.
This essay argues that sports should be seen as just as important as academics in schools. Why? Because they offer so many benefits like better health, improved social skills, and mental well-being. If schools added more sports to their programs, they’d help students become more well-rounded and ready for all sorts of challenges in life.
Physical Health Benefits of Sports
First off, let’s talk about the health perks. Playing sports is great for your body. Regular exercise helps fight off problems like obesity, heart issues, and diabetes. The World Health Organization says not being active enough is a big reason people die early, so it’s really important to get kids moving from a young age. Sports make exercise fun and give students a way to stay active, building habits that can last their whole lives. Plus, playing sports improves things like motor skills and coordination, which are key parts of staying healthy. Today, with everyone sitting around more because of technology, sports can help balance things out. By including sports in the daily routine, we can make sure kids grow up healthy and strong.
Social Skills and Teamwork
But it’s not just about the physical stuff. Sports also help you grow socially. When you play team sports, you learn how to work with others, communicate, and put in a group effort. These skills are not just useful in sports but also in school projects and future jobs. Research shows that students who play team sports usually have better social skills and are more empathetic. This is super important now, as teamwork is highly valued. Sports also bring together people from different backgrounds, breaking down social barriers and creating a sense of community. This helps students feel like they belong, which is important for personal growth and social harmony.
Mental Well-Being and Academic Performance
Sports aren’t just good for your body and social life—they’re great for your mind too. Regular physical activity can lower depression, anxiety, and stress, which are common problems for students. Exercise releases endorphins, which make you feel happier. Sports also teach discipline, time management, and goal-setting, all of which are useful in school. Studies show that students who play sports often have better focus, memory, and grades compared to those who don’t. The structured nature of sports helps build resilience and perseverance, which are crucial for tackling academic and personal challenges. So, rather than being a distraction, sports can actually boost academic performance and help in overall development.
To wrap it up, sports are more than just games. They bring a lot of benefits that help in the overall growth of individuals. From keeping you fit and teaching social skills to boosting mental health and academic success, sports play a big role in shaping well-rounded people. Schools should see these benefits and make an effort to include more sports in their programs. This way, they’d not only promote healthier lifestyles but also equip students with the skills they need to succeed in life. In a world that’s getting more competitive and complex, balancing physical, social, and mental development through sports can be a key to future success and well-being.

Large companies use sports events to promote their products. Some people think this has a negative impact on sports.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is common today for large corporations to promote products through various sporting events and teams. In my opinion, though this guarantees financial stability, it is a negative overall due to de-emphasis of the sport itself.
Those in favor of corporate sponsorship argue its financial flexibility. Most televised games, ranging from basketball and baseball in America to international sports such as football and rugby, are free of cost for viewers. This is only possible because of advertising during commercial breaks, billboards around the arenas, and product placement such as on player uniforms. Funds accumulated from such sponsorship not only allows the games to be broadcast free of charge but also enables team owners to maintain professional facilities and afford the salaries of the best players. If advertising were banned, owners would not be able to fund their team and players would eventually leave for wealthier leagues.
However, commodification also entails a reduction in focus on the actual sport. In the past, advertising was less obtrusive and might have consisted of a few commercials and signs in the background. Now, the announcers often work ads into their commentary and every highlight is accompanied by prominent logos on player jerseys. The effect aggregate is that audiences feel the games are only a means of advertising and they become indifferent the millionaire athletes and their multi-billionaire team owners. This has led many individuals, such as fans of English football, to sever connections to their childhood teams in order to support amateur community matches, which are not as commercialized.
In conclusion, despite the financial benefits of company sponsored sports events, the drawbacks related to the purity of the sport itself make this a negative trend. Owners and leagues must strike some balance but should prioritize a largely unadulterated product.

Hi Dave! would you please explain more about commodification , I am a bit confused by this word 🙂
It means to make something into a commodity/product and is more or less a synonym for materialism, consumerism, etc.
Is that clear?
I am interested to join this live class.
Which live class are you referring to Oche?
In agree or disagree question do we need to talk about both sides when we are strongly agree or disagree?
You don’t have to but I have seen other examiners be very picky about it and a lot of times if a student writes about one side then they will repeat the same ideas.
I’d recommend it but it is not necessary.
hi dave, please help check the below out. WIth financial gain, i took the approach of financial gain for the sponsors and not the sporting teams. Is this a right approach?
Main idea: The ingenuity of promoting the awareness of products made by corporations through sporting events is often one intended MOSTLY for economic benefits.
general example: Most Companies around the world often face the challenge of raising awareness for their products, a task also known as lead generation which if succesfull, literally translate to more sales and increasing number for profits.
explanation 1: This obstacle is easily surmounted, due to a relatively large audience often in attendance at game venues and media outlets, who would most likely serve as targets of the marketing antics of business corporations.
xplanation 2: This sport loving fans whose dedication and commitment for thier favorite sport team, is often preyed on through endorsement and product placcements on uniforms end up becoming consumers of products advertised at them.
result : Lead conversion becomes relatively easier, and the consumer database grows geometrically
specific example: Lebron james is in paid partnership with nike, wearing its shoes to appeal to sport lovers for a purchse

Free Event Essay Examples & Topics
An essay describing certain events that happened to you or other people is called an event essay. It doesn’t matter if the situation you’re writing about happened to you or not since your overall task does not change. This task can be a challenging one. You need to include the illustrative details of the event to make the readers feel like they’re experiencing the event firsthand. It needs to be more than a mere description of an event and contain elements of the narrative style.
Two paper types are the most common for the task.
A narrative essay is designed to tell a story; think of it as a review of an event. It will try to persuade rather than describe a situation. Such papers are written in first-person, which is usually not acceptable for essay writing.
A descriptive essay should convey a description of an event. You can start by sharing some details of the situation, providing colorful characterizations. That is to say, you draw an illustrative picture of the event but in words.
On this page, our writers have combined a list of event essay examples on various topics. You will find the guidelines for writing papers about current situations and issues. Besides, you’ll discover what events can lay the foundation for a great essay.
Neither narrative nor descriptive essays can be simply subjective. You have to research the event you’re trying to convey, not mess the facts and details. Of course, there is no way to represent an event in a completely objective manner, but fact-checking never hurt anyone.
To write an excellent event essay, follow these steps:
Step 1: Choose the event.
Look for an event that you can describe in the form of an essay. You can do that by looking at reputable news sources. Ensure that the articles you are examining are fresh and up-to-date.
Step 2: Do your research.
Start your research by reading the picked articles several times. Ask yourself questions about the events such as:
- What happened?
- When did the situation occur?
- Where did it happen?
- Who was involved?
- What was the result?
Make sure not to plagiarize when you write your essay. If you use direct or indirect quotes, don’t forget to include proper citations.
Step 3: Describe the event.
After you are done with the initial research, you can start by describing the event. Answer all the questions you have come up with. If you think you don’t have enough information, consult other sources: documentaries, journals, diaries, etc. Present several points of view and perspectives to make your description more accurate.
Step 4: Outline your essay.
By writing an outline, you can effectively prepare your thoughts and ideas. Creating a structure is an excellent way to logically connect the information from different sources and your own story.
Step 5: Write and cite.
At this point, you have done all the needed research and outlined your arguments. It’s time to create a description of the event. So, the last step is to compose it and cite your sources.
If you are assigned to elaborate on current events, here are some notorious occasions happening today. We’ve selected a few, but there are many more that you can find.
