Impact of Social Media on Nepalese Society

Sonika Lamichhane / KATHMANDU – Social media is a popular tool that facilitate people to create and share information, ideas, hobbies, and other kinds of expression through virtual spaces. People use social media to share, write, and meet new friends on the internet. When the Internet was launched in the 1980s, it represented a new era of communication.

However, our lives have been completely changed today. We can see, communicate and contact people all across the world with a click. Digital connectivity has made everything possible.

The use of the internet has spread all over the world since the invention of the world wide web in 1992 in the United States. It has an impact on Nepal as well. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Snap Chat are some of the social media platforms used in Nepal.

Social media has transformed our life. It has brought people together from all around the world, removing all the barriers between the people. We can make friends from all around the world. People can easily communicate, share their ideas, information, and thoughts. Likewise, social media could also be used to keep up with current events, it provides news through which we can know about what is going on around us. It also serves as a job search engine for people.

Certain groups are created on social media, from which we may see the vacancies for various positions. Through those posts, we can stay up to date on the most recent job openings. Similarly, it helps in the promotion of a product for business reasons. People are selling their products on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. These days people are using this media as a publicity tool, where we don’t have to invest money for the publicity of the products.

However, looking at the flip side, we spend the majority of our time on social media, which reduces family intimacy. People are so much addicted to social media that many parents these days lament that their children spend more time on their devices than they do speaking with them. Similarly, social media reduces face-to-face communication because we feel more comfortable interacting in a virtual medium, where we can’t see the person’s face or expression, and we feel more convenient chatting online.

Many people are unable to concentrate on their work as they are distracted by social media. When we post images to social media, we become so obsessed with it that we regularly check for likes and comments, which diverts our attention. Furthermore, social media is exacerbating cyberbullying. One of the most serious issues these days is that we hear a lot of news about cyberbullying such as ending people unnecessary messages and harassing them mentally.

Impact on Nepali Society

In Nepal, social media has become important tools for the people. The number of people using social media is growing every day. People’s use of social media is based on their preferences. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media was the most useful tools for the students. Similarly, parents are mostly working in offices and they don’t get time to take care of their children or assist in their homework. Hence, students learn and complete their homework by watching YouTube and other social media sites.

According to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority’s most recent report, there are 27.76 million individuals in Nepal who have access to the internet. While the internet has benefited us in a variety of ways, it has also ruined the lives of many people, though this technology is a boon if used wisely.

It has grown into a platform for students to explore their ideas, showcase their ability, and learn new things. Many individuals, though, have taken it for granted. According to the Cyber Bureau report for fiscal year 2020/21, a total of 3906 complaints were filed, including females filing 2003 cases, males filing 1471, and others filing 224. Similarly, 53 cases were related to Facebook issues, 2 to YouTube, 2 to Instagram, and 9 to Tiktok.

It is up to us to make best use of the social media sites. Many people believe that criminality on social media is on the rise as a result of a lack of clear norms, laws and awareness among the people.

They are in illusion that they can hide their identity and get away with it, which encourage them to commit crime. Before using social media, we must be aware of its advantages and its consequences, if we misuse it. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the way of working and reading was changed. For the students, they were able to take their online classes and continue their education through the social media sites. The government should make proper laws, create awareness and increase digital literacy in the country so that people can make best use of it and use it responsibly.

Social media is a platform that connects people from different places using the internet. Nowadays, social media is a must for people because it gives us so much knowledge that we can learn in our lifetime. In today's generation, social media is used by billions of people daily.

In the 21st century, the use of social media has spread all over the world and has an impact on Nepal as well. In the context of Nepal, social media has become an important tool for people. According to the latest report of the Nepal Telecommunication Authority, there are 27.76 million individuals in Nepal who have access to the Internet. While the internet has benefited us in many ways, it has also ruined many people's lives, although this technology is a boon if used wisely. In today's society, using social media has become a necessary daily activity. Social media is typically used for social interaction and decision-making. It is a valuable tool for communicating with others locally and globally, as well as for sharing, creating, and disseminating information. Social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok , YouTube, and various platforms are used for social sharing.

Globally and in Nepal, social media is now dynamically used for texting, chatting, sharing ideas, views, opinions, and much more. Social media is the greatest human discovery of this generation. Social media is a form of quick access to information. In Nepal, the number of social media users increased by 3.0 million between 2020 and 2021. The number of social media users in Nepal corresponded to 44.2% of the total population in January 2021.

The use of social media has both positive and negative effects on our society, positive effects include:

2. Gaining knowledge

3. Non-formal education

4. Learning new skills

5. Increasing communication skills and so on.

Unfortunately, it also has negative effects that include:

1. Social wars or social conflict

2. Different people give different thoughts

3. Cybercrime is on the rise

4. Cannot continue the current generation

5. Decline or neglect of cultural tradition.

However, social media plays a vital role in influencing people about the right things. Awareness can spread among people, and social problems and evils can be thrown out by aware people of their flaws and incidents. Therefore, it plays a vital role in society in people's lives.

In my country Nepal, we can find places with altitudes ranging from as low as 70 meters to the highest peak in the world 8848 meters. It is divided into 3 regions Terai, Pahad, and Himal with the temperature of the place varying from hot to cold. Each region has its own specialty. Nepal’s Himalayan regions have high and mighty mountain ranges that are breathtaking to look at. Out of the world’s top 10 highest peaks, 8 of them fall in my country Nepal.

My country Nepal is also secular and respects all religions equally despite the numbers. There are 126 castes in Nepal and behind them, every culture has its significance. Each culture has its unique festivals and traditions. People also celebrate each other’s festivals with great fun. Nepali people are known for their hospitality and friendliness too.

But even after nature blessing our country, we have not been able to fully utilize it. Problems such as corruption and political instability run deep in the country. Our natural resources are not being taken care of properly and our country is being poor day by day. People are rich but the country is poor. Poverty is also seen in our country. Lack of proper management of wastes has also polluted our water and slowly destroying our forests. This also means our plants and animals are slowly being extinct. Illegal hunting and farming of precious animals and plants are also ruining our ecosystem.

This is why to save our country from further danger and poverty proper management and a responsible leader are required. The citizens of our country should also feel responsible for the country and not only blame the leaders. Proper plans and policies should be required to protect our resources. Social evils such as discrimination should also be tackled. Conservative-minded people should be given awareness and strict punishments for corruption and other illegal acts should be given. Employment opportunities should also be created as many people are leaving the country for jobs abroad.

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris are scheduled to debate on Sept. 10, but the 2024 presidential election is already in the bag — at least according to Allan Lichtman, the American University historian who’s been dubbed the Nostradamus of presidential election predictions for his near-perfect 40-year track record.

Mr. Lichtman was among the few to accurately predict Mr. Trump’s victory in 2016 (earning him a Sharpie-scribbled note from the candidate lauding the “GOOD CALL!”). Immediately after the first 2024 presidential debate, between Mr. Trump and President Biden, Mr. Lichtman was also quick to warn that Mr. Biden dropping out of the race could be a “tragic mistake for Democrats,” leading him directly into an online battle with the forecaster Nate Silver. The confidence is rooted in Mr. Lichtman’s simple, history-driven model, which tunes out polls and pollsters and instead focuses on 13 true-or-false questions that he says hold the “keys” to the White House.

So can a model that looks all the way back to the horse and buggy days survive in an unprecedented election year marked by criminal proceedings, an assassination attempt and that Democratic switcheroo? Mr. Lichtman is confident that it can.

1. Nepali Language

O nce in Nepal , communities remained completely isolated due to steep valleys, high mountains, and thick forests, leading to the evolution of many distinct languages. The 2001 census reported 92 languages, but Ethnologue now lists 124 distinct living languages . This increase in number is largely due to the reclassification of dialects within larger groups that were previously thought to belong to a single linguistic community. Ethnologue’s linguistic map of Nepal , reproduced in Figure 1 , shows the hotspots of languages scattered across the country.

If we consider Trosterud’s suggestion that languages with more than 16,000 speakers should be written, we would expect all languages down to and including Dhimal to be written. This amounts to 28 languages, just under one-third of the total, which aligns with the proportion of written languages globally.

2. Nepali Writing

Four of the following Nepalese languages have a significant tradition of written use

• Nepali (historically known as Khas, Parbatiya, and Gorkhali) had 21 million speakers in 2021 . It has been written in the Devanagari script, the same script used across northern India, particularly for Hindi , for approximately 300 years.
• Newari , spoken by 880,000 people in 2021 and known as Nepal Bhasa within its linguistic community, has been written for over a thousand years using various scripts.
• Limbu, with 410,000 speakers in 2021 , uses a traditional script called Sirijanga, which likely originated from Lepcha writing. This script is believed to have been created in the 9th century, revived in the 17th century by Te-ongsi Sirijonga, and revived again in 1925 when it was formally named “Sirijanga.”

Ethnologue only reports limited literacy for Newari and Limbu, not surprising since these languages were suppressed by successive Nepalese governments from the late 18th century onwards until 1990. While the writing of Limbu and Lepcha was probably only ever used for special cultural and religious texts, Newar writing was used for a wide range of purposes until the overthrow of their regime by the Gorkhas in the mid 18th century.

Note that cross border languages, and particularly Maithili and Bhojpuri, also have their own mature literature and may be written in their own distinctive script; for Maithili the script is known as Mithilakshar or Tirhuta, for Bhojpuri it is Kaithi.

Indic writing including Devanagari and Bengali has been printed in movable type since around 1800, with the type evolving and being simplified over the centuries. When computers became used for writing and publishing, the encoding of Devanagari and other Indic scripts was undertaken in India, leading to the Indian Script Code for Information Interchange – ISCII. Work had been proposed to include Devanagari within the then established standard for computers, ISO 8859, as part 12, but this work was abandoned expecting to adopt ISCII’s codes into ISO 8859. However ISO 8859 was in turn superseded by Unicode, which included a code block for Devanagari and other major Indic scripts from the start, with the code blocks adapted from a 1988 version of ISCII. One significant difference between ISCII and Unicode was that in ISCII all the scripts of India had been unified within a single table, with the different scripts selected by appropriate font, whereas in Unicode these were dis-unified into separate code blocks.

The encoding of Limbu was added to the Unicode Standard in April 2003 with the release of version 4.0. Limbu was introduced to the standardisation process by McGowan and Everson in 1999, and a proposal was written jointly by Boyd Michaelovsky and Michael Everson in 2002. Michaelovsky is a linguist who has done considerable field research among the Limbu in Nepal learning about their writing in context, appealing in the proposal to both examples of writing and to the phonology of the spoken language. Even so there have been some discussions since then about missing characters, and in 2011 Pandey proposed two additional composite characters, though there is a case for introducing the virama instead.

Philly Halal Food Festival 2024: 7 vendors you don’t want to miss

Find these great places to satisfy your hot chicken cravings or try the viral Dubai chocolate bar.

The Philly Halal Food Festival is back and bigger than ever.

The second annual celebration of Muslim-owned businesses and halal-serving restaurants in the Greater Philadelphia area returns to the Khair Community Center in Phoenixville on Sept. 21. Tickets are $5 until Sunday night, increase to $7 after Sunday, then $8 at the door.

Philly seems to be overflowing with new halal restaurants of late — halal hot chicken is unstoppable — and the Halal Food Festival aims to introduce Muslims and non-Muslims alike to more halal-serving businesses in the city and the suburbs.

What does halal mean?

Halal, the Arabic word for ‘permissible,’ is used to describe various parts of Muslims’ lifestyles, from clothing to finance practices, that are allowed under Islamic law. When it comes to food, meat that is considered halal follows the tradition of zabiha, which requires that the animal has been blessed, treated humanely before and during slaughter, and killed by a single cut to throat that drains most of the animal’s blood. (Pigs are never halal, however.)

Halal food festivals, from World Halal Food Festival in London to the Houston Halal Food Fest , aim to share foods from throughout the Muslim world, which consists of numerous distinct cultures and communities who have roots across the globe. The Philly Halal Food Festival premiered last October with more than two dozen vendors and saw more than 3,000 attendees.

What to expect at the 2024 Philly Halal Food Festival

The family-friendly festival, which will run from noon to 10 p.m., is more than doubling in size this year with more than 50 food vendors, 27 local businesses selling everything from jewelry to fragrances, games, and bounce houses for the kiddos. “We want the [the fest] to be a meeting point for Muslims — not just a place to eat, but a place to engage in new relationships,” said Noor Bowman, founder and co-organizer of the event.

Bowman’s aim is to put a spotlight on the people who make Philly’s halal scene so diverse. Chefs and attendees of all backgrounds coming together “shows how food is a unifying thing,” Bowman said.

From cheesesteaks to the viral Dubai chocolate bar , here are seven vendors to visit at the Philly Halal Food Festival 2024.

Rice & Sambal

When chef Diana Widjojo stepped away from Hardena, the Indonesian restaurant in South Philly, she carried over the restaurant’s commitment to serving halal to her own Indonesian supper club, Rice & Sambal. “We’re Indonesian, so naturally we’re Muslim — and I prefer halal anyway. I’m very picky with my meats,” Widjojo said. The supper-club-turned-residency at Dankbaar on East Passyunk Avenue will soon transition into a full-fledged restaurant . Festival-goers can enjoy Widjojo’s rendang (braised beef stewed in coconut milk and spices) and ayam kecap (roasted chicken with lemongrass, sweet soy, garlic, lime leaf), among other items.

Amongst family and friends, Alaa El Habahbeh is known for her baklava and basbousa (semolina cake). The King of Prussia-based home baker opened her online business Sukar, which sells through Instagram and Etsy , two years ago. She specializes in the two aforementioned Middle Eastern desserts, along with kunafa, a sweet, cheesy shredded phyllo pastry. Habahbeh has also hopped on the Dubai chocolate bar trend — a milk chocolate bar made by the Dubai-based Dessert Chocolatier that’s filled with crispy kunafa and a pistachio paste, which has gone viral on TikTok . Whether she’s making the viral Dubai chocolate bar or her classics, Habahbeh says that she wants to share her culture through sweets that are ”all made with love.”

Nepali Momo Kitchen

Momos are literally the name of the game at Nepali MoMo Kitchen. Chef-owner Bharat Bist opened his dumpling-focused restaurant in Spring Garden in 2023 — his wife, Gigi Giri, owns Mount Masala, the Nepalese hotspot in Voorhees . Bist’s dumplings, made of flour, can be stuffed with nearly 40 different combinations from goat to tandoori chicken. And everything on the menu is halal. Bist says that he caters to halal-eating clientele in part because his best friend, who helped him open the restaurant, is Muslim.

Eating cheesesteaks at a Philly food festival is a no-brainer, and Ubayd Rodriguez, co-owner of Union Steaks, is back at the Halal Food Festival for a second year with various halal steak options (jerk chicken, beef). After serving time in prison, Rodriguez began his culinary career at the now-shuttered 10th Street Deli, which he owned until he finding the spot that would become Union Steaks four years ago with business partner Tone Trump.

Asad’s Hot Chicken

Owner Asad Khan grew up in Northeast Philly without many halal options. After an introduction to Nashville hot chicken, he developed a recipe and decided to open a storefront at the Philly Gas station off Roosevelt Boulevard. Now, Khan has nine other locations in the Philly area — the local chain recently opened its 10th location in Winslow Plaza in Sicklerville — and a loyal following of hot chicken fanatics that are all about the oversized slider sandwiches, tenders, and loaded fries. Some cite Asad’s as the beginning of the halal hot chicken craze in Philadelphia with nearly a half dozen different brands now expanding their footprints across the city.

Godshelter Oluwalogbon brought his popular New York City food truck, DF Nigeria Food Truck, to the parking lot of an Aldi in North Philly in 2021. The truck is a part of his larger company, Divine Flavored Catering, which owns a number of brands serving Nigerian food around the country. At the Philly food truck, folks can find halal versions of Nigerian classics, including meat stews, jollof rice, egusi soup with pounded yam, and zobo, a hibiscus drink.

Kuch Meetha Kuch Khatta

Shahar Liaquat is a Norristown home baker who started her Pakistani dessert business — which translates to “something sweet, something savory” in Urdu — after closing her salon during the pandemic. Liaquat will serve mini tres leches cakes and Dubai chocolate bars; chicken and beef puff pastry patties; and pani puri and gol guppa (a crispy deep-fried wheat balls filled with potatoes, chickpeas, and spiced water) at the fest.

Too many loners, not enough joiners.

“Social connection is as essential to our long-term survival as food and water.”

So says the May 2023 report released by the U.S. surgeon general’s office. The report found that the nation’s “epidemic” of loneliness and isolation can increase the risk of premature death on a level akin to smoking 15 cigarettes a day . It also determined that Americans spend 20 fewer hours a month with their friends now than they did two decades ago.

Maybe the report caught your attention too?

It sent me back to the work of Robert Putnam, the Harvard political scientist (and subject of a recent documentary ) who wrote the 2000 book “ Bowling Alone .” His thesis — which was considered pretty radical at the time — was that “social bonds are the most powerful predictor of life satisfaction.”

I listened to a long New York Times interview with Putnam on the drive to visit my parents this summer. Putnam reflected on how his research can help us make sense of our politically polarized environment, but also on how his work, though widely cited and admired, hasn’t resulted in real-world “success.” We’re as politically polarized as we’ve been in 125 years, and Putnam thinks that our lack of social capital undermines American democracy. In short: too many loners, not enough joiners.

All this brings me to Brooklyn, the location of my first book club.

I was one of a handful of well-educated, gainfully employed, twenty-something women in the group and our first book was Zadie Smith’s debut novel, “ White Teeth .” The book, also published in 2000, was an immediate bestseller ; it also won a gazillion literary awards for Smith, then just a tender 24 years old.

I’ve read plenty of Smith’s work over the years and loved it — from the Boston-based “ On Beauty ,” to the continent-jumping “ Swing Time .” “ Intimations ,” her book of essays penned in the early months of the coronavirus pandemic still sits on my nightside table.

After “White Teeth,” Smith went on to be one of the most respected writers of her generation. I, however, still can’t tell you a thing about the novel.

That’s because the afternoon before the first meeting of my first-ever book club, I bought the CliffsNotes version at a Barnes & Noble. This is embarrassing on several levels. First, was I that self conscious (and self important) about having not read the book that it was necessary to fake it? Apparently. Perhaps even more unfortunate, that one experience put me off book clubs. I decided the expectation to read a particular book by a particular time was annoying and promptly labeled myself “not a joiner.”

Now, I’m having second thoughts.

At my age, book club is a euphemism for “moms’ night out,” when moms can avoid family dinner and the kids’ bedtime to hang with friends. (Oh, it can be so many things; anybody watch “ Yellowjackets ”?) For Laura McTaggert, who wrote a wonderful essay this week , the group of five women she’s gathered with once a month for more than a decade have helped each other through all sorts of life’s curveballs — divorce, pet loss, career change, biopsies — as they’ve discussed literature (OK fine, sometimes only glancingly). Laura is one of at least 5 million people who consider themselves members of a book club. Since the pandemic, book clubs have skyrocketed in popularity: event listings (on Eventbrite) were up 24% from 2022 to 2023. Women have long-gathered to discuss things like art, history and literature. Books still have a way of bringing us together.

This week, Robert Putnam’s ideas and Laura’s essay and the big presidential debate (with its mass polarization on full display) have been sloshing around in my brain, an odd stew. It made me want to re-examine my own thinking about being a joiner. Putnam told the Times : “Don’t think the way to save democracy is just to set out to save democracy.” He believes clubs and institutions that build character and foster trust and fun — in a multiracial, multicultural way — could make things better. What a hopeful view.

So, a book club may not be in my immediate future, but I did (for the very first time) sign up to be a room parent for my fifth grader’s class. I also joined a track club this summer and spent several Wednesday evenings running 400-meter sprints with strangers. All that sweating was fun; and guess what? We aren’t strangers anymore.

Also, as it turns out, I discovered that “White Teeth” is one of my co-editor Sara’s Shukla’s all-time favorite books. She tells me it’s, in part, about how loneliness can lead to extremism. Who knew? Maybe I’ll finally get over my shame of the first-book-club-gone-wrong and read it.

AI is having a pushy moment

Why are we in such a hurry to give it more to do shouldn’t humans be in charge of humanity.

Dear Etiquette Expert: I have a Zoom lunch with colleagues in my field every Friday, and it’s a dynamic bunch — doctors from Johns Hopkins, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, UCLA. But lately a new guy has shown up, and the consensus, sadly, is that he’s arrogant and misinformed. He interrupts, he gets it wrong, and five minutes after someone corrects him he promotes the new info as though it were his idea. Last spring he published material riddled with errors, but even that hasn’t stopped him. How do we get rid of this guy? — Evidence-based Medicine

Dear Evidence-based Medicine: You don’t. Best of luck.

If the new guy were a person, an advice columnist could make helpful suggestions. But the new guy is artificial intelligence, which is having a pushy moment: AI is a built-in feature of the new Apple iPhone 16; it has somehow ascended to the top of our Google searches; and the coming generation of AI-infused personal assistants is on the horizon sooner than Bill Gates predicted.

Every company wants to dominate the landscape, which explains the mad scramble. Is AI up to the challenge? I’d say no, at least not yet. Someday it may ingest mountains of medical research data and spit out promising steps toward treatment or cure. Today, if you Google my name, you’ll find out that I’m the West Coast editor of a digital publication that closed over two years ago — even though the accompanying link leads to a biography with more current, accurate information. AI’s left hand, if it has a hand, seems not to know what its right hand is doing.

I am not a Luddite. I rely on aspects of AI, sometimes unwittingly, just like everyone else. I use my navigation system except when I know a better route because I’ve lived in Los Angeles longer than Siri has. I used it to commune with my late father, at least until it ran away with itself. I search online for health research, though I scroll past the AI entry to sources that are attached to a major medical center.

We have plenty of reason to hesitate. A patient who knew the right answer asked a generative AI site for post-surgery advice , out of curiosity, and got a response that was contraindicated, to say the least, because it could’ve landed the patient back on the operating table. And for a brand-new technology, AI can promote some pretty fusty ideas about race and gender. So much for its potential in the HR suite.

We haven’t even gotten to AI’s hallucinatory moments. Why are we in such a hurry to give it more to do?

That’s what an array of critics is asking, at increasing volume, from tech insiders to a college-age activist who thinks humans should be in charge of humanity. And yet a bill awaiting the signature of Governor Gavin Newsom of California has sparked resistance in the tech-driven state, where a letter signed by 130 startups warned that the law could “kill California tech.”

There’s the answer: We give it more to do, we get ahead of its abilities, because the financial stakes are so high. At a tech conference last year, Bill Gates said that AI assistants will do everything for us, but somehow the description of everything sounds more like house arrest than liberation, with AI standing between us and much of daily life while some lucky, leading company rakes in the profits. I guess it’s better to tolerate error than risk missing out on the prize.

AI is hardly on hold during the debate, and what’s sinister, what’s insidious, is how seamlessly it shows up without being invited. I got one of those overnight update notifications that show up from time to time, as though the phone were doing me a favor by working while I slept. I no longer believe that. I now think nighttime is when the phone misbehaves because I’m not awake to notice. The next morning, when I tried a search, AI appeared at the head of the pack.

A good relationship requires mutual consent, but I had no say in the matter because AI is an overbearing know-it-all: If this were a relationship between two people there would be way too many red flags. It does not always know what’s true, and, worse, it doesn’t know that it doesn’t know. Nor does it care. As a friend once said about a human version of this personality type: Often wrong; never in doubt.

Which brings us back to the loudmouth at that weekly lunch. Anyone who was ever been denied a seat at the cool kids’ high school cafeteria table knows how cruel the in-crowd can be, and I would never condone that kind of exclusionary behavior among sentient human beings. But I see a way, here, to be jerks to good purpose.

AI metastasizes every day while we wait for policy that overrides profit — but if you search “turn off AI Google search,” if you push back, you’ll find all sorts of workaround hacks. Or hang onto your old phone until we get things under control. Don’t be an early adopter. AI feeds on popularity. Starve it, ignore it, and it might sulk off to eat lunch by itself.

Embracing a phenomenological approach to research, this study unpacks teachers’ lived experiences of teaching English as a second language (ESL) writing at the undergraduate (bachelor) level in Nepal. The results revealed that the students' writing skills in demonstrating the essay's core elements were better than those of linguistics and technical aspects. It also showed that the students performed above the median score in all rubrics; however, it showed a significant performance gap among the students with regard to some of the parameters. Similarly, as per the qualitative findings, the students often conventionally used the core elements in terms of their placement and orders and relied more on the templates, although the study identified variations in expressions. The study concluded that although students performed well in major aspects of argumentation, they need more continuous support and formative feedback during the writing process to strengthen their argumentative writing skills. It also provided insights among the instructors about teaching writing skills to graduate students whose first language is not English.

Fake GPT-written studies are flooding Google Scholar. Here's why taking them down could make things worse.

• Many discuss controversial topics that are susceptible to disinformation.
• Researchers said removing the GPT-written studies could fuel conspiracy theories.

Scientific papers suspected of using artificial intelligence are appearing in Google Scholar , one of the most popular academic search engines.

A study published this month in the Harvard Kennedy School's Misinformation Review said, "Academic journals, archives, and repositories are seeing an increasing number of questionable research papers clearly produced using generative AI."

"They are often created with widely available, general-purpose AI applications, most likely ChatGPT, and mimic scientific writing," the study said.

ChatGPT is a chatbot developed by OpenAI that launched in 2022. The chatbot quickly went viral as users began drafting everything from workout routines to diet plans . Other companies like Meta and Google now have their own competing large language models.

Researchers gathered data by analyzing a sample of scientific papers pulled from Google Scholar that showed signs of GPT use. Specifically, scientific papers that included phrases considered common responses from ChatGPT or similar programs: "I don't have access to real-time data" and "as of my last knowledge update."

From that sample, researchers identified 139 "questionable" papers listed as regular results on Google Scholar.

"Most of these GPT-fabricated papers were found in non-indexed journals and working papers, but some cases included research published in mainstream scientific journals and conference proceedings," the study said.

Many of the research papers involved controversial topics like health, computing, and the environment, which are "susceptible to disinformation," according to the study.

While researchers acknowledged that the papers could be removed, they warned doing so could fuel conspiracy theories.

"As the rise of the so-called anti-vaxx movement during the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing obstruction and denial of climate change show, retracting erroneous publications often fuels conspiracies and increases the following of these movements rather than stopping them," the study said.

Representatives for Google and OpenAI did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

The study also identified two main risks from the "increasingly common" decision to use GPT to create "fake, scientific papers."

"First, the abundance of fabricated 'studies' seeping into all areas of the research infrastructure threatens to overwhelm the scholarly communication system and jeopardize the integrity of the scientific record," the study said.

The second risk involves the "increased possibility that convincingly scientific-looking content was in fact deceitfully created with AI tools and is also optimized to be retrieved by publicly available academic search engines, particularly Google Scholar."

"However small, this possibility and awareness of it risks undermining the basis for trust in scientific knowledge and poses serious societal risks," the study said.
