Deep Rock Galactic: How to Change Class

Image of Ashley Shankle

New players may find themselves lost on how to change class in Deep Rock Galactic . There are four classes to switch between, each one with its own unique abilities to make use of on assignments. Like any other games with classes, though, you’ll want to try them all out to find the best role for you.

Changing classes in Deep Rock Galactic is easier than you might think, and we’ll go over it as well as why you may not be able to change class in this guide.

How to Change Class in Deep Rock Galactic

If you’ve just started Deep Rock Galactic and are doing the tutorial assignment, you will not be able to change class until you either leave the tutorial or finish it. The tutorial must be done with the Gunner.

There are four total classes in Deep Rock Galactic :

You cannot change class while in an assignment ; you can only change class in the lobby.

Go to your (or any other player’s) quarters and look for the Character Selection terminal , which will be to the right if you’ve just spawned or to the left if you’re coming in from the main area of the lobby. Use the Character Selection terminal then make your selection, and you’ll be able to switch to any other dwarf you’d like!.

It’s worth noting that you can’t change class to one that overlaps another, so if you can’t select a dwarf it’s because someone else in your game is currently playing that class.

There is actually a way to get around DRG not allowing duplicate classes : When loading into another player’s game, you can press the “Q” or “E” keys on PC or the triggers on console to swap classes. This can overwrite the game not normally allowing duplicate classes, but only if you do not choose a class while in a solo lobby beforehand.

Deep Rock Galactic: Assignment Missions Deep Rock Galactic guide, tips

This page of the Deep Rock Galactic guide explains what Assignment Missions are and how to complete them.

Last update: 16 January 2022

In this section of the guide, you will find out what are the Assignment Missions in Deep Rock Galactic and how to complete them.

Assignment Missions are tasks that every aspiring miner must complete in order to unlock access to many of the attractions featured in Deep Rock Galactic. What's more, Assignment Missions are an excellent way to get additional raw materials and credits that can be used to improve your equipment or personalize the appearance of your miner.

Depending on the type of Assignment Missions, the player will have to complete a series of several tasks (usually 3 to even 10) for which they will receive a corresponding reward - Deep Rock Galactic: Assignment Missions - General information - Deep Rock Galactic Guide

Depending on the type of Assignment Missions, the player will have to complete a series of several tasks (usually 3 to even 10) for which they will receive a corresponding reward. The first Assignment task is assigned to each player from the beginning and must be completed to unlock access to all types of missions available in Deep Rock Galactic. Next quests are optional and you can get rewards from them, such as access to alternative weapons or unlocking the most difficult threat level (Hazard 5).

How to perform Assignment Missions?

Assignment missions are performed throughout the whole Hoxxes IV planetary system and are associated with various primary objectives. Typically, the player has a specific type of mission to complete in the proper part of space. Also, missions have various difficulty levels, so some should be completed in a group - especially when it comes to hunting extremely dangerous Dreadnoughts.

Assignment Missions are well visible on the main planetary map and are marked by a small white diamond that is shown in the picture above - Deep Rock Galactic: Assignment Missions - General information - Deep Rock Galactic Guide

Assignment Missions are well visible on the main planetary map and are marked by a small white diamond that is shown in the picture above. At the top of the screen you can also notice a mission progress bar which shows that the player is currently on stage 8 and will have a Salvage Operation to perform.

How To Play

Starting the game for the first time will launch the player immediately into a tutorial. This tutorial is optional and can be exited out of, it can also be revisited at any time using the Launch Tutorial button in the Miner's Manual, under Getting Started > Basics. The tutorial will teach you the basics of the game and specifically the Gunner class.

Upon completing the short tutorial mission, you will be transported onto an orbital space station, the Space Rig . Here you can relax between missions , purchase vanity items and equipment upgrades, begin and abort assignments , or drink at the Abyss Bar .

As a new player, you are required to complete a 10-mission-long assignment, named " Conquer Hoxxes IV ", before you are allowed to access the various planetary regions of Hoxxes IV .

Icons Campaign.png

Once you have completed the "Conquer Hoxxes IV" assignment, you are free to do whatever you want. Visit the various Planetary Regions to mine crafting resources, complete more assignments to unlock new weapons and terminals, purchase cosmetic items to become a fancy dwarf , or face challenging mutators for large Experience and Credit rewards.

Starting A Mission

Dwarven employees are dropped from the Space Rig onto Hoxxes IV to complete a variety of missions . After interacting with the Mission Terminal , you can select which planetary region to complete a mission in, what mission type to complete, and which game mode to play in. Stepping into the Drop Pod after selecting a mission will begin the launch countdown timer, and once it ends, you will be transported to the appropriate cave system to get the job done!

Planetary Regions

Currently Hoxxes IV has ten different areas to explore, with each area having a different look and different challenges to overcome. Only a handful will be available at any given time, with new missions in a different shuffled set of areas available every thirty minutes. In order to upgrade your equipment , you must visit the various regions in order to mine crafting resources from each region. The current planetary regions available are:

Croppa

Mission Types

Once you've selected an area , you'll be given a list of mission types currently available in that area. Each mission has a Primary Objective and a Secondary Objective , as well as a Mission Length and a Cave Complexity. Sometimes two missions of the same type will be offered, but with such different objectives that they will play very differently, so take note! The current Mission Types are:

Mining Expedition icon.png

Mutators are special events which may modify the mission for better, for worse, or for both. These can vary from the dwarves having greatly increased movement speed to exploder infestations. Warnings are negative mutators and anomalies are positive or neutral mutators.

Cave Leech Cluster Warning

Cavern Combat

As you explore the caves you'll encounter various creatures , including Glyphids, flying Mactera, Cave Leeches , Spitball Infectors , and many others. Periodically, Mission Control will announce that they have detected an incoming swarm , and large numbers of enemies will converge on the Dwarven Employees' location for a fight. Make sure you are ready!

Understanding Your Role

A good team can be made up of any combination of Dwarven employees, but it's important to understand what makes each one unique, and how to put their special talents to use to help your team. A well balanced team with good communication will stand a better chance at surviving deep down in Hoxxes IV .

Playing as The Driller

The Driller 's primary responsibility is crowd control with his CRSPR Flamethrower , and using his Reinforced Power Drills to quickly create entrances and staircases to help others access difficult to reach locations or materials. The Driller is also armed with powerful Satchel Charges that can deal huge amounts of damage to his foes. His default throwable is the Impact Axe , capable of dealing significant damage to single targets.

Playing as The Engineer

The Engineer has two powerful support tools, An LMG Gun Platform and a Platform Gun . Set up turrets to defend against swarms of enemy creatures, and use your Platform Gun to provide your team with ground to stand on and platforms to reach high up minerals. Team up with the Scout to reach resources that are high up on cave walls. His default throwable is the L.U.R.E. , capable of attracting the attention of the hostile wildlife .

Playing as The Gunner

The Gunner is equipped with a powered minigun to protect the team from the monsters of the deep. The Gunner's responsibility is all around defense. His Zipline Gun gives the whole team the ability to cross distant chasms and do so with holdable items. The Gunner is also equipped with a Shield Generator that he can throw to protect his team and recharge their shields. His default throwable is the Sticky Grenade .

Playing as The Scout

The Scout collects hard-to-reach ores using his Grappling Hook , and helps defend the team using his Deepcore GK2 and Jury-Rigged Boomstick , and launches flares using his Flare Gun to provide light in the darkness. His default throwable is the Inhibitor-Field Generator which slows down enemies and causes them to take more damage.

Character Rank

Character badge.

As you play each of the game's four classes, you will gain experience and ranks separately for each of the different classes, up to rank 25. Some weapon and equipment upgrades require you to have a certain rank before you can unlock them. Your current rank and experience progress are indicated at the top left of the screen below your Class Badge.

Player Rank

deep rock galactic how to change assignments

Your progress as a player is also tracked at the top right of the screen on the Player Badge, the blue gem which shows your name and player rank in title and number form, as well as your current credit balance. You rank up each time the blue gem fills all three of its sections up, and one section fills up each time you gain a rank with one of the four classes.

The player rank titles are as follows:

Rank Title
1 Greenbeard
2 Rock Hauler
3 Cave Runner
4 Stone Breaker
5 Pit Delver
6-7 Rookie Miner
8-9 Authorized Miner
10-11 Senior Miner
12-13 Professional Miner
14-15 Veteran Miner
16-17 Expert Miner
18-20 Elite Miner
21-23 Supreme Miner
24-26 Master Miner
27-30 Epic Miner
31-35 Legendary Miner
36-40 Mythic Miner
41-45 Stone Guard
46-50 Honor Guard
51-55 Iron Guard
56-60 Giant Guard
61-65 Night Carver
66-70 Longbeard
71-75 Gilded Master
76 and onward Lord of the Deep

All dwarves start with a basic set of a primary and a secondary weapon, some grenades , a Pickaxe , throwable flares , basic armor and their respective special tools which are described above.

Usage and ammunition

Your weapons, grenades and special tools work like one would expect: If you fire/throw/use them, you spend ammunition of the respective tool.

Throwable flares refill over time at no cost. If you throw too many you will have to wait a short time until the next one is ready, but you will never have to stay in the dark for too long.

Your pickaxe can be used forever.

Your armor consists of two layers: An energy shield, which gets used up if you take damage but refills slowly if you don't take any more for some time, and the bare skin of your dwarf ( "Hit Points" ) which gets exposed as soon as your shield gets used up completely and can only be healed with Red Sugar and at Resupply Pods .

Improvement

All of your equipment can be improved by buying modifications at the Equipment Terminal . Each object features multiple slots for mods which must be earned by leveling up with the respective class. For most slots multiple mods can be purchased - however, only one mod per slot can be used. This still leaves room for a hefty amount of personalization and improvement. Available mods can be found on the pages of the respective weapons.

Unlocking new gear

Beside the improvement of your starter set, each class has access to two additional primary weapons, one additional secondary weapon and two more grenade types. All of them must be earned and then purchased. While the grenades are only level locked (to prevent greenbeards from playing around with Cluster Grenades ), the weapons must be earned by completing the corresponding assignment.

URGENT COMPANY BRIEFING [ ]

Space Rig 17 // All Hands Bulletin // Clearance Level Lemon

Alright, Miners - it's briefing time. Settle down. Shut up.

We have been making steady progress against the Rockpox, but we are not out of the woods yet. The rogue comet remains in-system and are still pelting Hoxxes with Rockpox-infected meteoroids. In a nutshell, the situation is grim.

For starters, the infection is spreading despite all our work. We are keeping well on top of the actual impact zones, but the Rockpox is evolving. Several new types of Hoxxes wildlife have succumbed to the Rockpox. Infected Mactera Bombers are running rampant, and we are seeing reports of infected Naedocyte Breeders spewing out clusters of writhing Plague Larvae. On top of that, Hoxxes itself is responding to threats in characteristic manner: Scanners have revealed several new strains of Glyphid, aggressively attacking our holdings.

Worst of all - the Plague Hearts have sprouted legs and are walking around. These things must be destroyed at all costs. They are representing an all-new infection vector, operating independently of any need for meteoroids, and capable of going wherever their instincts direct them. If we do not act immediately and with extreme prejudice, this could spell the end of our efforts on Hoxxes - for good.

Get suited up, Miners. Management is well aware of the responsibility we are putting on your shoulders, and expresses their gratitude for your continued efforts. We have faced worse than this, and we will succeed once again, so long as we stand together as one.

Let's make it happen. Management sends their regards.

/// MESSAGE ENDS ///

Update Changes [ ]

Season event: rockpox corruptor [ ].

The Plague Hearts you have encountered previously have evolved. They will now turn into Lithophage Corruptors - ravenous, fully mobile abominations that spread Rockpox wherever they go. They appear impervious to normal gunfire, so you will need to use the Cleansing Equipment to get through their exterior shells and expose their soft, inner core.

New Rockpox Enemies [ ]

Rockpox breeder [ ].

A result of increased Rockpox infection of airborne fauna. The infection has changed the internal workings of its host to allow for Rockpox Larvae to sprout and thrive within its body.

Rockpox Bomber [ ]

As if the Goo Bomber wasn't bad enough already: The lithophage has spread to the volatile excretion this critter is so loved for, expanding the reach of the disease at a high rate.

Rockpox Spitter [ ]

The Rockpox Acid Spitter has turned its already impressive bio-projectiles into a highly infectious Rockpox vector, and with a suppressed pain response and high dose of combat pheromones the Rockpox Spitter poses a far greater threat than before!

Rockpox Exploder [ ]

The Rockpox Exploder has had profound mutations to its body, thickening its skin and reducing its volatility in turn of being filled to the brim with highly contagious Lithophage spores. Being caught in the blast zone will instantly infect any dwarves nearby, so stay clear of them at all costs!

New Enemies [ ]

Glyphid stingtail [ ].

A powerful, heavily armored beast with a grasping tail, capable of pulling in any enemy and goring them against its massive horns. Take care around this one!

Glyphid Septic Spreader [ ]

The malicious cousin of our old friend, the Glyphid Spitter. This one fires heavy globules of rancid biomatter, which spread out in a wide area around impact. Mind your step and try to ignore the smell!

Jet Boots [ ]

You will now be able to recover crates of high powered jet modules in the caves. Attach these to your boots and turn them into fully functional jet boots, giving you a much- needed leg-up during any hardships you may encounter!

Space Rig Addition: Jetty Boot [ ]

Back home, a bit of redundant machinery has been cleared out, opening up the Space Rig a bit more- which handily allows plenty of space to install a training terminal for the coded locks you will encounter on the Jet Boot crates. It would appear some smart- aleck has even seen fit to build an arcade cabinet to fit it into. Bring lots of credits!

New Beer: Randoweisser [ ]

This potent ale reportedly instills a sense of adventure and lust for challenge in whoever drinks it, randomizing all equipment, perks and cosmetics for the duration of a mission. Drink it at your own leisure!

Equipment Terminal : Randomize Loadouts [ ]

At the Loadout Terminal, a new option to randomize all your gear and upgrades has also become available, enabling you to quickly set up challenges for yourself. Why would anyone do this? Well, never let it be said we do not wish to enable our employees!

Community Request: Copy/Paste Loadouts [ ]

Additionally, you can now copy and paste loadouts for a smoother experience when experimenting with new weapon and mod combinations, without the hassle of redoing everything from scratch!

Wardrobe: Sleeveless Armors [ ]

Some of your armors now come with a new option: Toggle between sleeveless versions of most of your owned sets! This does not count for DLC Armors or armors that are already sleeveless.

Weapon Input Buffer [ ]

Thanks to the hard work of the folks at R&D, all semi-automatic weapons now come with fancy input buffering. This will make it easier to consistently maintain a high rate of fire, especially on weapons like the Subata, M1000 and EPC.

Weapon Balance [ ]

  • The Subata has long been in need of an update. As always if you unlocked any of the removed upgrades their cost will be refunded.

Need to know how to promote your character in Deep Rock Galactic? There’s nothing like showing off your progress and good work like getting a promotion. But how do you do it?

Deep Rock Galactic is full of missions and mining to enjoy in the dark caves of Hoxxes IV. Whether you’re going in solo or with a team, it’s tons of fun. And, with the Special Edition release date coming up, it’s never a better time to grind. Once you’ve done work, you’re able to be promoted. We’re here to show you how to do it.

How to get a promotion in Deep Rock Galactic

To get promoted in Deep Rock Galactic, you have to first reach level 25 for your class. If you haven’t done this yet, play more missions and finish assignments to get to the necessary level. You won’t be able to be promoted if you aren’t level 25, so don’t waste your time looking for the promotion assignment.

Once you’ve successfully gotten to level 25, head over to the Assignment Board and you’ll see the Promotion Qualification assignment for whatever class you’ve reached level 25 in. These assignments are a specific set of high-risk and high-payout missions. They’re different for each class. Here are the mission types for each class:

  • Mining Expedition
  • Salvage Operation
  • On-site Refining
  • Escort Duty
  • Point Extraction

Once you’ve completed the assignment for your respective class, it’s time to head to the terminal and get that sweet promotion. Luckily, I found that for my first promotion, these assignments didn’t take too long. They were well worth the time. If you have a specific class you want to promote, try to get used to the mission types before the promotion. It makes it easier to complete the assignment.

Where to find the Promotion Terminal in Deep Rock Galactic

Once you’re at level 25, and completed the Promotion assignment, head to the Memorial Hall. Behind the big statue and up the ramp is the Promotion Terminal. Go here, and you’ll be able to be promoted.

A screenshot of Deep Rock Galactic, a game featuring Memorial Hall to promote their character.

Unfortunately, being promoted means you do have to pay a fee. However, this is well worth it for the rewards you’ll get.

Never turn it down

You should always promote yourself when you can. While you do have to pay a fee, it’s small and well worth the rewards you get for it. Plus, you get to show off to everyone you play with as promotions are the prestige levels in the game.

What do you get for getting promoted in Deep Rock Galactic?

As a reward for promotion, you’ll receive the Honor Badge . This is a bronze border around your profile with a star at the top. For your first promotion, you’ll unlock the border. Future promotions will add stars to the border and change it from bronze to other colors. You’ll also receive three rewards to claim, which will be useful for the endgame.

Getting promoted will reset your level to one, as well. This will allow you to continue leveling up and earning rewards for it. You’ll also gain access to the Deep Dives endgame activity, and The Forge terminal.

That’s everything you need to know about how to promote your dwarf in Deep Rock Galactic. If you’re looking for more info, check out our Season 5 release window for all the news on the next season of the game.

How to promote FAQ

How do I promote my character?

You need to first reach level 25 in any class. Once you’ve done so, you’ll unlock the Promotion Assignment. Complete the assignment. Head to the Promotion Terminal to pay a small fee and get promoted.

Where is the Promotional Terminal?

The Promotional Terminal is located at the back of the Memorial Hall. Head to the back of the statue in the center of the room and up the ramp to find it.

Should I promote my character?

Yes, you should always promote your character when you can. It unlocks tons of rewards and loot.

I think people being able to play with the overclocks they think are cool is GOOD for the game. Please if you disagree at least give a reason why its GOOD for the game if it can take a player months to get an overclock they want to enjoy on their class rather than weeks. I don't see this hurting the established community and i just see it as a way for new players to enjoy the game more...I'd at least like to see valid reasons people think this would be bad if your going to argue against it. Because so far i see two people with over 1000 hours in game gatekeeping overclocks from new players without any reason its better this way. So please. Explain how being able to grind out an extra 3 overclocks a week for example would be worse for the game than the status quo if you think this is a bad idea.
