PV Sindhu Gold Medal 2022: PV Sindhu has once again made the country proud by winning Gold Medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The badminton player defeated Michelle Li of Canada 21-15 21-13 in the final of Women's Singles to win a Gold Medal at CWG 2022. This is also PV Sindhu's third Singles Medal from the Commonwealth Games. She earlier won Bronze in 2014 in Glasgow and Silver in 2018 Gold Coast. 

PV Sindhu is considered one of India's most successful sportspersons who has won medals at various tournaments such as the Olympics and on the BWF Circuit. 

PV Sindhu's full name is Pusaria Venkata Sindhu. She is a professional badminton player from India. She was the first badminton player from India to reach the finals of the 2016 Summer Olympics and was also listed in Forbes' as the Highest-Paid Female Athletes in 2018 and 2019.

PV Sindhu is an Indian badminton player who is considered one of India's most successful sportspersons. She has won medals at various tournaments such as the Olympics and the BWF Circuit including Gold Medal at the 2019 World Championships.

PV Sindhu: Birth, Early Life and Education

PV Sindhu was born on July 5, 1995, in Hyderabad to PV Ramana (Father) and P Vijaya (Mother). Her parents have been volleyball players at the national level. Sindhu's father was a member of the team that won the bronze medal in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. He received Arjuna Award in the year 2000 for his contribution to sports. 

PV Sindhu: Badminton Career

Sindhu at the age of eight started playing badminton. Under the guidance of Mehboob Ali, she started learning the basics of badminton at the badminton courts of the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. She travelled a distance of 56 km every day from her residence to the badminton courts to learn and practice the sport. 

PV Sindhu joined Gopichand Badminton Academy and won several titles under the 10-years category. At the Ambuja Cement All India ranking, she won the 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles and the singles category. 

In the under 13-years category, Sindhu won the titles at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune. In the under 14-years category, she won a gold medal at the 51st National State Games in India. 

At the age of 14, PV Sindhu entered the international circuit. She won a bronze medal at the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo. Sindhu won a silver medal at the 2010  Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge. She made it to the quarterfinals of the 2010 BWF World Junior Championships in Mexico but lost to the Chinese opponent. 

In 2011, Sindhu won Maldives International Challenge in June and the Indonesia  International Challenge in July. At the Dutch Open, she made it to the finals but lost the match. At Swiss International, Sindhu won the Finals beating Carola Bott. She won the India International badminton event in 2011.

P. V. Sindhu

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, more commonly known as PV Sindhu, has helped place India on the badminton map.

The daughter of national level volleyball players, her journey in badminton began at age eight. Under the guidance of Indian legend Pullela Gopichand, her talent blossomed, propelling her to win junior badminton titles and paving the way for international success.

A trailblazer's journey: PV Sindhu's rise to glory

Sindhu's prowess on the court quickly became evident.

She clinched a bronze in women's singles at the Commonwealth Games in 2014, the same year she was part of the India team to finish third at the Uber cup, also known as the World Women's Team Championships.

Sindhu made history by winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 . Her path to the final was marked by impressive victories over formidable opponents, including Tai Tzu Ying, Wang Yihan, and Nozumi Okuhara. Despite defeat against Spain's Carolina Marin in the final, Sindhu's silver medal resonated as a momentous achievement for India, becoming the first female Indian to win Olympic silver in the sport.

The following year she won silver again, this time at the World Championships, before she claimed silver in singles and gold in mixed team badminton at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

PV Sindhu then wrote her name into the history books by winning the world title in 2019, becoming the first player from India to top the podium at a world championships in any form of the sport.

The Hyderabad native also stepped on to the podium at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 2021. Seeded sixth, she dominated the group stage and continued her charge in the knockouts, where she beat Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark in the last 16 and the number four seed from Japan, Yamaguchi Akane, in the quarters. Sindhu was beaten by Tai Tzu-ying in the semi-finals, but bounced back to beat He Bingjiao in the bronze medal play-off.

Her triumphs continued in 2022, as she again secured gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and added another feather to her cap by winning a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in the Philippines.

Though she struggled for form in 2023, Sindhu led India to a bronze medal finish at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in Dubai, marking India's first-ever medal in the tournament.

Her 2024 began with more continental success, as she led India's women to gold at the Badminton Asia Team Championship.

P.V. Sindhu (born July 5, 1995, Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh state [now in Telangana state], India) is a professional badminton player from India who has made her mark in the 21st century with a number of wins at the Commonwealth Games , the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Championships, and the Olympic Games . She is the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals—a silver medal at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games and a bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (held in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic)—in addition to being the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the BWF Championships (2019). She has received some of the highest sporting honors and civilian awards in India, including the Padma Shri (2015), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award (2016; the honor was later renamed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award), and the Padma Bhushan (2020). She ranked number 16 on Forbes magazine’s list of highest-paid female athletes in 2023.

Sindhu is the younger of two daughters born to P.V. Ramana and P. Vijaya, both national-level volleyball players. While growing up, she often accompanied her parents to their South Central Railway volleyball teams’ practices and matches; however, she never took an interest in playing the sport. When Sindhu was six years old, badminton caught her attention when she saw legendary player Pullela Gopichand win the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championships. Her father signed her up for training at the Mahboob Ali Badminton Academy when she was eight. She then went on to train with S.M. Arif, former chief national badminton coach, at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium, Hyderabad, and eventually with Gopichand at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad .

Sindhu and her father traveled 30 km (19 miles) each way twice a day so she could train at Gopichand’s academy, and working with him paid off for the young athlete. She won the all-India ranking tournament in the under-10 singles category and later in the under-13 doubles category. She won the gold medal in the under-14 category at the 51st National School Games of India.

In 2009 Sindhu made her international debut at the Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships and took home a bronze medal. At the India Open the same year, she made her senior debut although she was still playing at the junior level then. In 2010 she was a runner-up at the Iran Fajr International Challenge and a quarterfinalist at the Junior World Badminton Championships in Mexico .

Sindhu won her first senior title in women’s singles at the Maldives International Challenge in 2011. At the BWF World Championships in 2013, she won a bronze medal in women’s singles. Also in 2013 she received the Arjuna Award from India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for outstanding performance in sports and games, one of the country’s highest honors for an athlete.

Sindhu competed in her first Commonwealth Games in 2014 and took the bronze medal in women’s singles. She also won a bronze in women’s singles at the 2014 BWF World Championships, becoming the first Indian player to win back-to-back medals at the yearly event. Sindhu’s 2015 season included reaching the final of the Denmark Open and winning the women’s singles title at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold for the third consecutive year. She was awarded the Padma Shri for 2015 by the government of India for her outstanding performance in sports.

A standout moment of Sindhu’s career came at the Rio 2016 Olympics when she became the youngest (at age 21) and first Indian woman to win a silver medal. For her efforts in Rio, she was honored with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, India’s highest sporting honor. She followed that up by winning her first Super Series title at the China Open in November of that year and then went on to win three more Super Series titles: the India Open in April 2017, the Korea Open in September 2017, and the BWF World Tour Finals in December 2018, a first for an Indian athlete.

At the 2018 Commonwealth Games, Sindhu took the silver in women’s singles and the gold in the mixed team event. That same year Sindhu won the silver medal at the Asian Games and the BWF World Championships. The following year she won the gold medal at the 2019 BWF World Championships, making her the first Indian woman to win the gold and the most successful Indian ever at the championships, having earned a total of five medals by 2019: one gold (2019), two silver (2017 and 2018), and two bronze (2013 and 2014). In recognition of Sindhu’s achievements, the Indian government awarded her the prestigious Padma Bhushan for 2020.

In 2021 Sindhu won the bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, making her the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. She went on to take the bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Championships in 2022 and followed that up with her first Commonwealth Games gold medal, despite suffering a stress fracture to her left ankle during play.

Sindhu’s injury meant that she was not in top form in 2023, but she managed to secure India’s first medal, a bronze, at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships in February that year. In October of the same year, Sindhu had to withdraw from the French Open Super 750 after sustaining a knee injury, which sidelined her from tournament play for four months. She returned to competition in March 2024 at the French Open Super 750 but was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In her quest to win an Olympic gold medal, Sindhu trained in Bengaluru , India, with Indonesian coach Agus Dwi Santoso, and in April 2024 she was selected for the Indian team competing at that year’s Games in Paris. However, she lost in the round of 16 and failed to win a medal.

When Saina Nehwal won bronze in the London 2012 Olympics, few would've expected another badminton player, then ranked in the top 30, to eclipse Saina's legacy. 12 years later, Pusarla Venkata Sindhu has done that and much more. Sindhu now stands as one of only two Indians to ever win two individual Olympic medals, and enters Paris 2024 aiming to become the first Indian ever to win three. Come the end of the Paris Olympics, Sindhu could well go down with a greater legacy than any Indian athlete ever.

Born to national volleyball players in Hyderabad, Sindhu grew under the tutelage of former Indian badminton star Pullela Gopichand, the same place where Saina also trained. But in 2014, as Saina left the Gopichand Badminton Academy, Sindhu replaced her as the face. Not too long after, she would be replacing Saina as the face of Indian badminton altogether.

Saina came into Rio 2016 as the higher-seeded Indian. But Sindhu trumped the odds, going all the way to the final. As India endured a disappointing Olympics - securing only two medals, four less than London 2012 - Sindhu's silver medal shone bright. She even won the first set against World no. 1 Carolina Marin, but fell short in the end.

Seeded sixth for Tokyo 2020, Sindhu lost her semi-final despite not having dropped a set before the game. Nonetheless, she bounced back to win bronze, making it two Olympic medals.

Sindhu racked up several medals after 2016, peaking with gold at the 2019 BWF World Championships, becoming the only Indian badminton player to ever achieve it. In 2018, Sindhu won gold in the mixed team event at the Commonwealth Games. Four years later, Sindhu won gold in the women's singles event, and also completed a collection of winning a medal of every colour at the CWG. To date, she boasts five medals each at the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

Ranked 13th in the world heading into Paris 2024, Sindhu is no more an overwhelming favourite. She may not even be India's brightest badminton hope, with men's doubles duo Satwik-Chirag making waves. But she has the experience of delivering on the biggest stage, and the opportunity to win the third colour of medal at the Olympics too.

P.V. Sindhu’s qualification for the Paris Olympics was a smooth journey. Former world champion, who won silver at the Rio 2016 Olympics and bronze at Tokyo 2020, secured the quota by finishing 12th on the Race to Paris Ranking List. Players in the top 16 (up to two per country) of the men’s and women’s Race to Paris Rankings secure a spot for their national teams for the Olympics. 

Training and Preparation

From January 2024, Sindhu started to train under Indonesian legend Agus Dwi Santos, focusing on improving her stamina, stroke power, and overall game strategy. She has also participated in international tournaments as part of her preparation for the Olympics. Sindhu participated in various competitions including, Badminton Asia Championship, Malaysia Masters, Singapore Open and Indonesia Open.
