Asia University Rankings 2023: Results Announced

The Times Higher Education (THE) have just released the Asia University Rankings 2023, a comprehensive comparison of research-intensive institutions that is trusted by students, academics, universities, industry and governments.

The universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – using the same 13 performance indicators as the  THE World University Rankings.

In 2023, China’s institutions take the top spot, with Tsinghua University and Peking University taking first and second positions for the fourth year in a row. It comes as little surprise that the country is predominant in the rankings, given that the higher education sector is attracting increasing attention for its global competitiveness. Our sister company China Admissions makes studying in China all the more accessible by helping prospective students apply to these to universities.

The Asian university in 2050

21–23 june 2023, hong kong.

  2024 website

The rise of Asia’s universities has been one of the most significant developments in the recent history of higher education. The region has increased its representation from a quarter to a third of all institutions listed in the THE World University Rankings over the past five years.

The higher education sector has benefited from strong public investment, a commitment to internationalisation and strong cultural capital attached to the importance of universities.

But issues such as an uncertain geopolitical outlook, vast income differences across the region, and the economic and social aftershocks of a global pandemic will shape the next phase of Asia’s growth up to the midpoint of the 21st century.

The THE Asia Universities Summit 2023 brought together 500+ delegates to discuss what it will mean to be an Asia university in 2050 and whether there is such a thing as a distinctly “Asian” university in such an economically, culturally and socially diverse region.

The summit featured the exclusive live reveal of the THE Asia University Rankings 2023, accompanied by a detailed masterclass to explore the latest data and identify the best-performing institutions in the region.

The summit also hosted the THE Awards Asia 2023 ceremony. Now in their fifth year, the awards offer a major international platform to recognise outstanding leadership and institutional performance, and to celebrate the continent's higher education excellence in all its diversity.

Ateneo tops Philippine schools in THE Asia university ranking

MANILA, Philippines – Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) topped Philippine universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings in 2023 .

Ateneo ranked 84th in its debut appearance at the THE Asia rankings, and was the only Philippine institution in the top 100.

Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines (UP) placed in the 201-250 bracket, and De La Salle University ranked in the 501-600 bracket.

Mapúa University, known for its engineering programs, ranked 601+ on THE’s 2023 Asia rankings.

Community’s hard work

The Quezon City-based university had the following scores:

  • Citations (research influence): 97
  • Industry income (knowledge transfer): 37.6
  • International outlook (staff, students, and research): 31.8
  • Research (volume, income, and reputation): 11.6
  • Teaching (learning environment): 38.3
  • Overall: 47.4

“We are honored to enter Times Higher Education’s Asia rankings for the first time, especially being ranked in the top 100,” said ADMU University president Father Roberto Yap.

“This feat is the product of years of hard work of the entire community – from faculty and researchers, to staff, professionals, and administrators, to our students. This only encourages us to further work on our shared mission to engage with society to affect positive change in the world,” Yap added.

Other ‘reporter’ schools

Other Philippine schools that made an appearance in the platform but were labelled as “reporter” include Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University.

“Reporter” status means that the institution “provided data but did not meet our eligibility criteria to receive a rank,” according to THE .

The THE Asia University Rankings 2023 included 928 universities. The universities were assessed based on teaching (30%), research (30%), citations (30%), industry income (2.5%), and international outlook (7.5%).

In October 2022, ADMU also topped the country’s universities in the THE World University Ranking. ADMU placed in the 351-400 bracket, overtaking UP, which placed at 801-1,000. UP had led the Philippine universities in THE world rankings in previous years. – Rappler.com

Times Higher Education’s (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023

by StudyMalaysia.com on July 11, 2023 | Top Stories

Times Higher Education’s (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023 - StudyMalaysia.com

Times Higher Education has been and is one of the most trusted and credible references for information regarding higher education worldwide. The rankings of universities provide young people and their families with trusted guidance to help them make one of the most important decisions of their lives - Where to study? It represents a reliable source of data, insight, and expertise on higher education. The information given is based on years of a relationship with about 1799 institutions across 104 countries. Thus, it is a trusted avenue that students can fall back on to help them make informed decisions that will define their futures.

University rankings are made based on considerations of a few main criteria:

  • Teaching and the learning environment - This has direct relevance to the students going to study. Attention is given to reputation survey, the ratio of staff to students, the ratio of doctorate students to undergraduate students, and the number of doctorates awarded per academic staff. The belief is that the quality of teaching at a university affects the quality of its research, knowledge production, and knowledge transfer.
  • Research - It is definitely an advantage to be taught by people who are not only good teachers but also good researchers. By evaluating universities based on their research output can help educators and researchers identify the institutions that are making significant contributions to the different fields. The research component gives students a broader educational experience, and students are able to explore the effects of applying new processes through study and testing.
  • Citation - The visibility and the impact of research work done at a university are seen in how much citations it receives. This year shows Asia’s growing influence on the spread of knowledge and ideas across the world, as measured by research publication citations. Over the past five years, countries in the region have significantly improved their average citation score, which measures research influence by capturing the average number of times a university’s published work is cited by scholars globally.
  • Knowledge transfer - This is a process that allows research results, discoveries, scientific findings, intellectual property, technology, data, and know-how to flow among different stakeholders. This is a way to provide insight into potential approaches for research. It involves the creation, sharing, evaluation, dissemination, and adoption of knowledge.
  • International Outlook - This is a marker of the university’s popularity to both local and international students. It takes into consideration international to domestic staff ratio and the proportions of research that involve international collaboration.

The 2023 Asia University Rankings feature institutions from 31 territories. This is the 11th edition of THE’s Asia University Rankings, and this year 669 universities are ranked, up from 616 last year. Thirty-one countries/regions are represented from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east. Most universities included in the rankings come from Japan (117), followed by mainland China (95), India (75), Iran (65), and Turkey (61).

Mainland China takes the top two positions for the fourth consecutive year (Tsinghua University & Peking University) The National University of Singapore takes the third position for the fourth consecutive year.

A total of 22 Malaysian institutions feature in the rankings this year, but only 3 manage to make it into the top 100. Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) has gone from being the top private university in Malaysia to the top university in the country. It is ranked 63rd in the THE’s Asia University Rankings, up from 95th last year. Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) also made it into the top 100 of this ranking. UM is ranked 66th (a drop from 55th last year) while Universiti Utara Malaysia is ranked 99th this year from 148th last year and 155th in 2021.

As rankings by different bodies are done using different criteria, results of rankings may be a bit different from one to another. Thus, at the end of the day going to the most expensive or the most prestigious university does not necessarily translate to a good education or experience. The bottom line is still to find a university that best suits your goals and where you can complete your entire degree happily.

MANILA, Philippines — Four Philippine universities have secured their spots in Times Higher Education’s Asia University Ranking in 2023.

The list, which was released on Thursday, ranked 669 institutions from 31 places.

Below are the Philippine universities included in the list along with their rankings:

  • Ateneo de Manila University (84)
  • University of the Philippines (201 – 250)
  • De La Salle University (501 – 600)
  • Mapua University (601+)

Ateneo de Manila University also emerged as the top Philippine school in Times Higher Education’s IMPACT Rankings which was released on June 1, 2023.

This is a worldwide performance assessment conducted to measure universities’ success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Apart from the four universities that were ranked, six Philippine institutions were also included in the list under “reporter” status.

These are Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University.

Reporter status indicates the university is an active participant in the ranking process, even though they have not been ranked.

To provide “comprehensive” and “balanced comparisons,” Times Higher Education said the universities are judged based on their core missions.

These are teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internal outlook.

THE Asia Rankings 2023: IISc best among Indian universities, JNU goes missing

A few universities have dropped out of the top 200 this year altogether. jawaharlal nehru university (167th in 2022) and iit gandhinagar (120th last year) are notable names missing from rankings this year..

Eighteen Indian universities have made their way into the top 200 in the Times Higher Education’s (THE) annual Asia university rankings for 2023, with the Indian Institute of Science continuing to rank the highest among Indian institutions at the 48th position. However, IISc has fallen six positions compared to last year.

Overall, India has one university in the top 50, four universities in the top 100, and 18 universities in the top 200.

Last year, 17 higher education institutions figured in the top 200 club . This time, JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research is once again the second-highest ranked university at the 68th position, as opposed to the 65th rank in 2022. This is followed by Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences (77th), which has made its debut in the top 200 this year, and Mahatma Gandhi University (95th).

THE Asia rankings 2023

However, even as the count of total Indian universities in the top 200 has gone up marginally, many have registered a drop in their performance. For instance, IISc’s rank has fallen for the fifth consecutive year, from 27 in 2016 to 48 this year. JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research has also dipped by three positions this year, and IIT Ropar registered the sharpest drop of 63 positions, from the 68th rank to 131 this year. An upward trend was noticeable in IIIT Hyderabad ’s performance, which moved up from the 174th rank to 106 this year.

A few universities have dropped out of the top 200 this year altogether. Jawaharlal Nehru University (167th in 2022) and IIT Gandhinagar (120th last year) are notable names missing from the top 200 this year.

THE Asia rankings 2023

It’s important to note that the prestigious first-generation IITs, including those in Delhi , Bombay, Kanpur, Madras, and Kharagpur, continue to boycott the ranking over concerns regarding transparency. Earlier this year, representatives of the Times Higher Education (THE) had made a presentation to IIT-Delhi, IIT-Bombay, and IIT-Madras to inform them of the specific changes in the performance parameters this year that address their concerns. However, the IITs haven’t budged on the boycott yet.

This is the 11th annual edition of the Asia University Rankings by THE, a British magazine that reports on higher education. In its assessment, THE uses performance indicators in the areas of teaching, research, citations, international outlook, and industry income. Universities from 31 countries, from Turkey in the west to Japan in the east, participate in the rankings.

“The very rapid growth of Indian universities willing to put themselves forward for assessment in the international rankings is very impressive, showing a real appetite to compete on a global stage and to benchmark against the very best in the Asian continent and the world,” said THE’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, Phil Baty, in reference to the 75 Indian universities participating in the survey. The number has gone up from 71 last year and 63 the year before.

China’s Tsinghua University leads the rankings with the top spot, followed by Peking University and the National University of Singapore. However, the overall rankings are dominated by Japan (117), followed by China (95), India (75), Iran (65) and Turkey (61).

The Philippines has made a notable advancement in the global academic arena, with four of its universities making it to the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings for 2023. This is an increase from the two universities that were ranked in 2022.

UP and DLSU have been part of the rankings since 2017 and 2019, respectively, while AdMU and Mapua debuted this year. Six other local higher education institutions were listed on reporter status for being active participants in the rankings but are still unranked.

Ateneo de Manila University debuted strong on the THE Asia University Rankings emerging as the country leader after being on reporter status the previous year. The Jesuit-run AdMU, with campuses Loyola School in Quezon City and the Professional School campuses in Makati City, entered the ranking at 84th spot.

The University of the Philippines, ranked for the seventh time this year, reverted to the 201-250 bracket, the same spot it held when it first entered the rankings in 2017. The state-run UP System with 8 constituent universities in 17 campuses all over the country was in the Top 100 for three straight years from 2019-2021, before sliding down to the 129th spot last year.

De La Salle University is listed in the 501-600 bracket, a slight dip from its previous 401-500 position. The Catholic private university in Manila has been included five times since it debuted in the rankings in 2019.

Mapua University, renowned for its engineering and technological programs, made its first appearance, joining the rankings in the 601+ bracket.

Six other Philippine universities are listed as reporter schools. These institutions, which include Cebu Technological University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Santo Tomas, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, Tarlac Agricultural University, and Visayas State University, are active participants in the rankings but have yet to earn a ranked position.

These are the new highest-ranked universities in Southeast Asia for 2023

Dale John Wong

Times Higher Education (THE) has released a new ranked list of the best universities in the world, with over 1,799 institutions from across the globe put together in a definitive list formulated on various criteria.

The rankings were based on factors like teaching, research, citations, industry income, and each university's international standing. You can view the methodology here .

The top 10 universities in the world:

1. University of Oxford 2. Harvard University 3. University of Cambridge 4. Stanford University 5. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 6. California Institute of Technology 7. Princeton University 8. University of California, Berkeley 9. Yale University 10. Imperial College London

While the usual suspects made it to the very top (Oxford, Harvard, Cambridge, MIT, etc), there were some subtle shifts in the rankings that indicated a slow but obvious trend of higher learning institutions in East Asia and the Middle East earning relevance as more-than-decent places to pursue a degree.

China, for instance, now has seven universities in the list — up from just two in 2018, while Hong Kong and Japan have managed to add more names to the list.

Nanyang Technological University has also impressively scaled the ladder to sit at the global 36th spot, up 10 places from last year.

In Malaysia, the rankings also see many familiar names dominate the country's top institutions, although Sunway University has now secured itself among Malaysia's top 10.

These are Southeast Asia’s best-ranked universities

What if we told you that you can study abroad and have an international experience without needing to fork out as much money? It is possible in ASEAN countries — education hubs where some of the world’s top universities are housed .

For several years now, universities in ASEAN have consistently shown that students should look East . This year is no different. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 verdict is out — and some ASEAN institutions have topped the list.

There are 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions included in the World Rankings this year, making it the largest edition in THE rankings’ 19-year history. ASEAN universities made the cut, with some managing to climb up the top 100 universities ladder. Without further ado, here are some of the best ASEAN universities according to THE:

National University of Singapore

Once again, Singapore holds true to — and cements — its status as a world research powerhouse. The island nation’s chart-topper, the National University of Singapore (NUS), enters the world’s top 20 this year. Singapore’s flagship university makes the country proud again by joining the ranks of the University of Oxford and Harvard University.

Founded in 1905 , NUS went from being a medical school that provides education to just 23 students into a university with three campuses scattered across Singapore. With 13 undergraduate schools, four graduate schools, and 35 research institutes and centres, it is little wonder why NUS continuously exceeds expectations.

Universiti Brunei Darussalam

Rising one group band from 351-400 to 301-350 is Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), a nation located on the north coast of the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. This English-medium institution is  Brunei’s flagship university. It has 10 academic faculties — from the Academy of Brunei Studies to Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences — and seven research institutes.

Ateneo de Manila University

Over in the Philippines, newcomer Ateneo de Manila University achieved the 351-400 ranking, a triumph for this Southeast Asian country that has four THE ranked institutions overall. Last year, Ateneo de Manila University did not make the list at all and now, it is leading the way for other schools from the Philippines.

Ateneo de Manila University’s history began in 1859 when Spanish Jesuits established the Escuela Municipal de Manila, a public primary school established in Intramuros for the city of Manila. Inspired by the rich history and effectiveness of a Jesuit education, the university became a “ force for good in seeking innovative and sustainable solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges ”.

University of Malaya

Down in tropical Malaysia, you’ll find one of the best ASEAN universities called the University of Malaya (UM). The school ranked 301-350 last year, and has since gone down one group band, 351-350. Malaysia has 22 universities in THE’s World Rankings overall, and four rankings debutants, solidifying the country’s status as a developing education hub. Even newcomers Universiti Malaysia Pahang and Sunway University made the list in the top 1000.

UM is the oldest and highest-ranking Malaysian higher education institution according to both THE and QS World Rankings , another ranking agency. It was founded in 1905 — even before Malaysia (Malaya as it was known back then) gained independence in 1957 — and rapidly grew to become Malaysia’s leading research university.

Duy Tan University

Vietnam’s Duy Tan University maintains its group band of 401-500 from last year’s THE rankings, joining five other ranked institutions. One of the five schools is Duc Than University , which also made the 401-500 cut.

Duy Tan University is a private research university located in the heart of Danang. Since its inception some 27 years ago, the university has enrolled 3,108 PhD and master’s students, 109,130 undergraduate students and 12,400 students in its vocational programmes. Over 95% of Duy Tan University graduates are employed within a year of graduation.

Key takeaways of THE’s World University Rankings 2023

1. The University of Oxford retains the top spot for the seventh consecutive year.

2. Indonesia’s best-performing institution is University of Indonesia, ranked 1001-1200. The country has four new additions to the rankings with the State University of Malang (1201-1500) being the highest-ranking newcomer.

3. Unlike some of the best ASEAN universities right now, the number of US universities represented in the top 100 has decreased, from a peak of 43 in 2018 to 34 this year.

4. China has 11 universities in the top 200 for the first time, and 95 universities overall in THE’s 2023 Rankings.

5. Thailand, on the other hand, has 18 ranked institutions, with four of the highest ranking universities all positioned in the 801-1000 group band: Chulalongkorn University , King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi , Mae Fah Luang University and Mahidol University .

Times Higher Education Asia Rankings 2023: Indian Universities’ Performance and Surprise

TAs the academic landscape continues to evolve, the Asia University Rankings 2023 by Times Higher Education (THE) has shed light on some intriguing developments in the Indian higher education sector. While the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) maintained its position as the highest-ranked Indian institution, there have been notable shifts and surprises, including the absence of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) from the top 200. This blog explores the latest rankings, highlights the performance of Indian universities, and delves into the factors contributing to these changes.

Out of the 75 Indian universities that participated in the survey, 18 achieved a commendable performance by securing a position among the top 200 in the international rankings. Despite slipping six places compared to last year, IISc remains in the lead, holding the 48th position. Similarly, the JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research maintained its rank at 68th, following its achievement of the 65th rank in 2022. A noteworthy newcomer, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, made an impressive debut at 77th, while Mahatma Gandhi University secured the 95th position. Although the overall number of Indian universities in the top 200 slightly increased this year, some institutions experienced a decline in their rankings. For instance, IISc has been gradually dropping in rank over the past five years, going from 27th in 2016 to its current position. JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research and IIT Ropar also experienced a decline. However, IIIT Hyderabad showed promising improvement, climbing significantly in the rankings. Surprisingly, Jawaharlal Nehru University and IIT Gandhinagar did not make it into the top 200 this year. These exclusions emphasise the need for these institutions to reflect on challenges and strategically work towards their growth and recognition. It is important to note that several prestigious first-generation Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), including those in Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, Madras, and Kharagpur, have chosen to boycott the rankings due to concerns over transparency. Although representatives from Times Higher Education (THE) tried to address their concerns by explaining the changes in performance parameters, the IITs have not yet rescinded their boycott.

Top 10 Universities in THE’s Asia University Ranking:

A British magazine covering higher education, has released the 11th annual Asia University Rankings. The THE calculates its rating by analysing teaching, research, citations, international outlooks, and industry income. Universities from 31 countries across the Asian continent participate in this assessment. This year’s rankings are dominated by Tsinghua University from China, securing the top spot, followed by Peking University and the National University of Singapore. Japan leads the overall rankings with 117 universities, followed by China (95), India (75), Iran (65), and Turkey (61).

In THE’s Asia University Ranking 2023, these are the top 10 Indian Universities:

The Asia University Rankings 2023 provide essential insights into the changing Indian higher education landscape. Although IISc remains the top Indian institution, the absence of JNU and IIT Gandhinagar emphasises the need for focused efforts to maintain and enhance their rankings. The rankings show that Indian universities are determined to compete globally and measure themselves against the best in Asia and the world. It is crucial for everyone involved to address the concerns raised by institutions like the IITs and strive for transparency and excellence in India’s higher education system.
