Ways to Improve Road Safety

There are many ways in which we can improve road safety. In order to keep yourself safe and out of harm’s way, we must always walk on the pavements meant for pedestrians. Do not jump or run on roads, as you never know when a vehicle might appear.

Similarly, always follow the traffic signals religiously. Even if there is no one on the road and the signal is red, do not move until the light turns green. The obedience to traffic rules must not depend on the traffic on the road. One must follow them no matter what.

In addition, when you’re on foot, always cross the road at zebra crossing only. Do not jump on dividers or more to do the same. Most importantly, always make sure to look both ways, left and right when crossing the road.

Even if it is a one-way street, just because you are following the rules does not mean the other person is also doing the same. So keep your safety above everything else.

Adults must not leave children alone on the road and never use your phone while driving or walking on the road. When in moving vehicles, always wear your seat belt. Similarly, when on a two-wheeler, do not forget your helmet. Finally, do not take out your head or hand in a moving vehicle. Always remember that your safety is in your hands. Today, I am here to deliver a Speech on Road Safety. Don't we keep hearing about the number of people who are victims of road rage or who are involved in traffic accidents? Unfortunately, some people die on the spot, and others sustained severe injuries that last a lifetime. Vehicle accidents have become a major cause of increased death rates in our country, even though the government is putting in place road safety measures.

Few people are aware that Abu Dhabi is notorious for having the highest rate of road deaths in the world. Every month, on average, 38 people die as a result of fatal accidents caused by road traffic, with the majority of the victims being children aged 0 to 14.

As a result, everyone, particularly pedestrians, must remain alert when on the road and obey all safety laws. It is the pedestrian who is mostly responsible for the accident because fatal cases of injury occur only when he or she walks carelessly, not paying attention to the traffic signal or walking on the marked crosswalk.

As a result, I implore all of you to remain vigilant and never be in a rush while on the road. Furthermore, several people are often seen disturbing the regular flow of traffic; please be mindful that this can be very dangerous to one's life and should be avoided at all costs. When walking down the lane, please use the zebra crossing.

If you're taking public transportation and it's a bus, be patient and wait for it to come to a stop before boarding. Stop signs should never be disregarded since doing so will result in serious road accidents.

If you're riding a bicycle on the lane, be extra cautious and make sure your bike is in good working order, with lights and brakes in their correct locations. Second, stop riding your bike on a busy road and instead use public transportation.

However, there is no assurance that these prevention measures can eliminate serious road accidents, but we can certainly reduce the risk by being alert on the road and adhering to all safety regulations. Do keep in mind that life does not have a rewind button, so be cautious.

A man died recently after falling in a pothole while dropping his child off at school. There is no shortage of such accidents in our country, and it is past time for our government to step up and take responsibility for the poor maintenance of public infrastructure. Then, all over the world, a public awareness campaign should be held to encourage people to take road safety precautions.

I hope you all recall what I said and will teach others about the value of following traffic laws.

A very warm welcome to everyone present here. The topic on which I am going to speak today is a very relevant one in today’s world. It is road safety.

Rules and the lifeblood of the world. Roads connect us with one another. Roads are marvels of science. They reduce distance and catalyst all forms of transit. With these roads comes a plethora of vehicles that move about on it 24/7. With increase in globalization and modernization, the number of motor parts and such other vehicles have become extremely high on the roads every day.

Hardly moment passes when there is no car on the road in front of us. No doubt the increase in the number of cars and vehicles on the room have eased our lives. But just like anything else there are disadvantages of this too.

The increase in the number of cars have paramount importance because greater number of cars and vehicles also translate to a higher risk of people and property being damaged by them due to human error and negligence.

Advancement in science and technology has resulted in the building of better quality of roads and as a result the cars and other vehicles which moves about on it have the freedom of driving at a higher speed. Due to this highest speed many at times it is observed that they tend to become negligent of the pedestrians and bystanders and this irresponsible behavior result in death and damage.

Even if they apply brake in time the cars skid and is out of control of the driver and causes vehicular collision. The situation is worse in one-way high speed moving traffic when collision in one car disrupt the entire traffic and causes a series of collisions like the Domino effect.

Proper amount of checks and legal measures should be taken in order to prevent or at least minimize such events. The policeman should be equipped with proper speed monitoring equipment and strict action should be taken on the defaulters.

Another major problem in our country is the legal system which has become defunct and corrupt. Many a times the accused malign with the policeman or the judge in order to sway the judgement in their favor. The judicial precedent is replete with examples of such individuals refuting all sorts of law and order restrictions and performing acts of incompetence regarding road safety.

A big issue today is the quality of roads and the number of potholes present in it that causes disruption in the vehicle movement and often results in accidental damages and injuries to pedestrians who many a times succumb to their injuries.

Because of poor quality of road material and loopholes and gross irregularities in construction process, the roads are made of extremely poor quality which deteriorates it’s just after it has been built with a spell or two of light showers. The amount of Red Tape associated with the process of construction and hierarchical system of corruption and bribery makes for the construction of these low-quality roads.

The pot holes in it that are deep and extremely dangerous particularly during night when there is a shortage of light. Many people even fall into it and sustained injuries to which they might not easily recover. Proper warning and hazard symbol should be used in order to intimate the people regarding the location of these potholes on the roads.

Proper traffic signals are also absent in most parts of our country which result in cars from opposite lens and adjoining roads to collide with each other when they are at high speed. Many times, the people neglect using indicators and warning flash light or horns which results in road accidents.

The roads made should have one-way traffic provisions and a proper footpath for the pedestrian to cover distance by walking. Most of the incidence of vehicle accidents occur when a person is trying to cross the road and the driver fails to stop the car in time.

Many times, this is because a proper zebra crossing in traffic signal has not been provided for the pedestrian for transit across the road. Overhead road crossings are also needed in some busy areas where stopping the traffic for the passage of pedestrians is not possible.

Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that what is most important for road safety is awareness. Children should be taught from early age what road safety is about and how to behave on road. Strict driving tests should be put in place so that road safety is never compromise because of a driver error.

Road safety practices are vital as it equips the road users with the skill to protect themselves & other road users from unnecessary harm. It is possible to maintain law & order for the well being of road user by Road safety. It reduces the fatalities & other causalities on the roads. We all use the road daily & road safety is taught to us from our very elementary education. Time to time awareness regarding the same is also given. In India road, safety week is celebrated every year under the guidelines of the Ministry of Transport & Highways & National Security Council. The correct application of signals when changing lanes or performing turns is another crucial component of road safety. This not only communicates your intentions to other motorists but also aids in avoiding collisions.

On the road, distracted driving is a serious issue as well. This includes tasks like texting, eating, and even turning on or off the radio while driving. Even for a little period of time, these distractions might cause you to lose focus on the road, which can have disastrous results.

Good Morning Dear Students!

Today, I am standing here in front of you all as your class teacher and also to deliver a speech on road safety. Now you are no longer small kids who do not know the safety rules while walking on the road. There’s a great saying, “It’s better to be safe than sorry”. However, we tend to forget all this and become carless at times so much so that we risk our lives and put it in danger.

Don’t we keep hearing the news of the count of people who become a victim of road rage or get involved in road accidents? Unfortunately, some die right on the spot and some receive serious injuries that last for the lifetime. Accidents from vehicle have become a big reason behind increased death rates in our country and amidst the time when the government is implementing road safety measures.

Not many of you would know that it is Abu Dhabi which is infamous for holding the highest rate of road deaths in the world. On an average, there are 38 deaths every month because of fatal injuries caused on the road traffic and mainly 0 to 14 year-old children are involved in such cases.

Hence, this establishes the fact that everyone especially pedestrians must remain vigilant while taking the road and must adhere to the safety rules. It is a pedestrian who is chiefly responsible for the accident as it is only when he/she walks carelessly not paying any heed to the traffic signal or do not walk on the designated crosswalk that fatal cases of injuries occur. So I request all of you to remain watchful and never be in a hurry while being on the road. Besides, many people are often seen disrupting the usual flow of traffic, please note that it can also prove very dangerous to one’s lives and therefore should strictly avoid it. Always use zebra crossing in order to walk down the road. Keep your eyes and ears open and listen to the sound of horns if blown around you.

If you are going to travel via public transport and if it’s a bus, then patiently wait for the bus to stop and board it thereafter. Likewise, if you are going to step out of it, then wait for it to stop properly and make sure that no other vehicle is obstructing your path. Make it a point to carry some reflective material so that the drivers can sense your presence from a distance itself. Never ignore stop signs as when people do that serious road accidents occur.

If you are riding a bicycle on the road, then be even more careful and make sure that your bicycle is in a sound condition with lights and working brakes at their proper places. Secondly, avoid taking bicycle on a busy road and try to use public transport.

However, there is no guarantee that through these preventive measures we will be able to avoid fatal cases of road accidents, but we can definitely avert the danger by remaining vigilant on the road and following all the safety rules. Students, always remember that life doesn’t have a reset button, so never be careless.

Hope all of you will remember my words and in fact would educate others about the importance of road safety rules.

Dear Society Members – a very good morning to all of you!

As the president of our society’s organizing committee, I have organized an event based on ‘Road Safety Week’ starting from today wherein I would like deliver a talk on some important road safety measures for the members of my society. As we all read in newspapers the increasing cases of road accidents particularly that of the young generation of today, I sincerely hope that through the medium of this talk some awareness could be spread amongst the people and they learn to become more responsible and extra careful while walking on the road.

Please allow me to put forth some of the reasons which result in road accidents. Primarily, driving a vehicle beyond the prescribed limit is what causes most accidents on the road. Some drivers or owners themselves drive recklessly and flout traffic rules without any fear of punishment. Besides, people who are drivers by profession have to drive throughout the day and sometimes during the night too that they fail to remain attentive and cause accidents on the road. However, now that our government has enforced strict road safety rules and a hefty fine, especially on the drink and drive cases, the incidents of road rage have significantly come down.

Talking about the youngsters, I have no hesitation to admit that they drive very irresponsibly and consider road as their racing track, which again results in fatal road accidents. It becomes the responsibility of parents to keep a watch over them and make them realize the importance of safety rules. Sometimes, the vehicle is faulty and remains out of service for months that its breaks or clutch don’t work and leads to major road accidents. On the top of this, uneven road surfaces and potholes contribute to the poor road conditions and increase the graph of road accidents.

Recently, a man after dropping his kid to school died after falling in a pothole. There is no dearth of such incidents in our country and it’s high time that our government should come out of its state of negligence and own responsibility for the poor maintenance of public infrastructure. Then, awareness campaign should be run everywhere so that the citizens of our country grow serious towards adopting road safety measures. In fact, my advice to the government would be to suspend the license of those who are involved in the cases of road rage. The offenders must be put in jail and severe punishment should be levied.

Less or no use of seat belts and helmets also contribute to such cases. According to a recent report, it’s the two-wheelers and trucks that cause around 40% of deaths in our country. In India, the cases of road accidents are three times higher than that existing in developed nations of the world. So the only way to curb death rates caused due to road accidents is to sincerely follow safety regulations while driving on the road or while being on foot for that matter. Those who are driving should not exceed their speed limit so that if the need arises, the vehicle can be stopped for the passerby or seeing something coming on your way.

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen!

First of all, I want to thank all the event organizers and management team for doing such a great effort for public welfare and of course, all the people who are gathered here with us all. Today, this social event has been organized in this locality because the number of road accidents are rising day by day and thus people need to get aware of this public issue.

More than 1.2 million people are killed and 20 to 50 million people suffer from serious injuries worldwide every year due to road accidents and hence it has become a serious issue these days. According to a prediction of a report known as “Global Status Report on Road Safety”, road accidents will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. We should consider this as an alarm for us because most of the road accidents are the cause of carelessness and hence it is becoming a big issue.

There could many reasons for the happening of the road accidents. Negligence or the recklessness of the driver or any other person is the main cause of road accidents. People do not follow the traffic instructions and rules properly and hence it leads to severe injuries and deaths. We can normally see people who jump traffic signals, driving while drunk, not wearing seat belts etc. We all know that what kind of rules and regulation are there in India. There are no proper rules, regulation and strictness on the roads. There are hardly very few places in India, where they follow proper rules. But it is not only up to the government but people should also have some respect towards the rules and regulations.

In many places in India, there is a lack of emergency services for treatment of people who are caught by an accident. There are many other reasons for the road accidents. To get a driving license has become quite easy these days and it is dangerous because the people who do not know about driving properly can harm others who are using the same road. Population explosion, economics developments, industrialization and motorization in the country are the roots of these accidents. As much as the country will get modernized, the use of vehicles will increase. The problem of the road safety is of everyone who is using the roads.

There is urgency for the strict rules and regulations for safety on roads. Everyone should follow the instructions and rules while driving or while using a vehicle. These days, the craze of bikes between youngsters is increasing and hence they should follow the rules such as wearing a helmet and speed limit. While using a car, we should always use the seatbelt and maintain the speed limit. Harsh driving or driving while drunk is the main cause of accidents that happens with the cars.

Our lives are in our hands and thus it is necessary to follow rules and proper instructions while using a road. On this note I would like to thank all the people for gathering here and for making this social event successful.

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Students!

Today, this special assembly has been organized for an important reason regarding vehicles that students are using these days. As a teacher in this school, I feel that it’s my duty to think about your safety when it is related with school.

Yesterday, I saw a student who was on his bike and riding ruthlessly throughout the road. It could be dangerous for anyone who was using the road or for himself. Ruthless driving is one of the main causes of the road accidents. There are many other cases when we have seen the students who did not even have a driving license were driving recklessly on the road and which is quite shameful for us because it is a disobedience of the rules of our country.

If we talk about road safety, then it can be only possible when we will follow the rules and regulations of the road safety. The rules differ from two wheelers to four wheelers. If you are on two wheelers, then it is important to wear a helmet and drive in a limited speed. If you are on four wheelers, then it is important to wear seatbelt and of course maintaining the speed limit. One of the main causes of road crashes accidents are due to drink and drive. The accidents that happen due to drink and drive or harsh driving are the cause of driver’s carelessness and lack of strictness on the roads.

According to the report of Global status given on 2013, more than two lakh people are killed in road accidents in India every year. Around one hundred people are killed and thousands of people get injured in road accidents everyday due to the carelessness of drivers. One reason for road crashes could be the condition of the roads. In India, there are many roads that are not in a good condition and became dangerous for driving. Especially in rainy season, the condition of the roads became poor and they get cracks in it. The poor condition of roads is still a big tragedy of India.

It creates problems while driving and sometimes the vehicle gets stuck on the road due to cracks and water. There are very few places in India where these problems do not happen or roads remains in a good condition during rainy season. The cause of this problem is the height of corruption in India. Breaking traffic rules and safety rules are normal because it just needs some money to get out of the trouble and that is it. Tripling on bikes are prohibited for the purpose of safety but still we can see many people doing the same freely because there is no fear in the mind of the people because they know that all they need is just money.

This problem will get deeper as we go through it and thus it needs a solution. It needs the contribution of everyone but not only of the government. I hope that from now every student as well as other people will remember this that safety is first. On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our honorable principal for giving me this opportunity.

Hello everyone! Today as we have gathered here, I take this opportunity to talk about the most significant public health issues nowadays; that is – “Road Safety”.

Let’s begin with the statistics first. It will help us assess the graveness of the situation. According to a recently released report by the World Health Organization, nearly 1.35 Million people lose their life in road accidents globally, every year. Pedestrians and two wheeler riders constitute the most vulnerable lot. The stats of India are no better, with nearly 1.5 Lakh people dying annually due to road accidents. The figures are not only alarming, but also indicate that we are way behind our agendas of development and road safety. I am sorry to say, but given to the present situation, a 50% reduction in road accidents in India by 2020, is a distant dream.

Now that we know that what the stats reveal, it’s time to talk about – causes, effects and counter measures. The world today is developing at a fast pace – growing economy, better business prospects and better job opportunities, have in a way accelerated the sale of all types of commercial and private vehicles. The situation is critical in middle income or developing nations, where streets could be seen bustling with cars, two wheelers, pedestrians etc. In Indian subcontinent, a few Middle East and African countries, animals, carts, road side vendors are easily spotted on the road; adding up to the possibility of a road accident.

Though, we might blame it all on the factors like over population, excess of vehicles and administrative apathy; we cannot shrug off the responsibility that we hold. Figures reveal that the prime causes of road accidents leading to casualties are road rage and over speeding, followed by apathy towards traffic rules. In India alone, nearly 50000 riders lose their life every year, for not wearing a helmet. These figures could have been significantly lower if they had just worn a helmet. What sense does it make to risk your life when it could be saved easily?

It is hard to accept, but accidents are caused by our own disdain to follow the rules than by anything else. Though the departments like police, public works department, have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all users of the road; but firstly the responsibility for the safety of our own as well as others, lies in our own conduct i.e. how we behave while on road. By breaking the traffic rules we not only compromise our own safety but also the safety of others.

A fatal road accident is the biggest tragedy that could happen to your family. Believe every word of it – road accidents are painful not only for the victims but also for those who love them. Seeing someone you love, writhing in pain, is unimaginably heart breaking. You might leave your own or someone else’s family scarred for life; living in deprivation, pain and sorrow. Is it worth to be negligent for a momentary pleasure if it leads to lifelong pain and sorrow? Well, it’s your choice to choose life or death. I would definitely choose life always.

Next obvious question is – Why? Why we don’t follow the rules, why don’t we wear helmets, seat belts, why do we jump the signal, why do we compete with other unruly riders or motorists? Apathy towards following road safety rules is a habit. Habit that has arisen due to the ignorance towards the safety of our own, as well as others. Today, we love to be on time, we love to compete and we hate delays. Of course your time is precious, but is it more precious than life? Not following the traffic rules and copying other unruly road users; could have fatal consequences.

The governments are more concerned to curb down road accidents and have also paced up preventive measures. Traffic signals have been installed on every crossing; the roads are well lit up; there is separate lane and bridges for the pedestrians. Some places also have dedicated roads for motorcyclists and heavy vehicles like buses etc. Many things are being done to ensure our safe transit, but it is upon us to utilize the resources in a safe way. Remember the roads are brightly lit and separated for the safety of various users, but not for over speeding and stunting. Authorities can only make laws for our safety, but the first responsibility to implement those lies on us.

For the unruly ones who still don’t follow, strict punishments should be given like – hefty fine and imprisonment. Authorities must adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards traffic rules violations. Then only we could achieve the national as well as global road safety norms.

At last, I would like to thank all of you for being patient listeners and hope that when we part away, we all will drive safe and be concerned for the safety of others as well. Stay safe! God Bless You All!

Respected Principal, teachers and my dear classmates. A wonderful morning to all of you. Today we all have gathered here to celebrate this day, I would like to speak a few words on – ‘ Traffic Rule ’.

We all know that traffic rules provide systematic and controlled measures that a person needs to take on the road for safety reaching his or her destination.

Road safety is very important and there are some prime traffic rules that need to be followed. Let me remind you of some on this occasion as you all are responsible citizens of our country, and believes in safety first:

We should not apply brakes all of a sudden. Applying breaks all of a sudden leads to an abrupt stops. As vehicle can get a jerk which often leads to an injury.

A helmet plays a greater role in avoiding any kind of head injury during a ride on a scooter, bike or any two-wheeler. The relaxation is only provided to Sikhs as they wear turbans as their religious symbol.

Using the horn carefully is another important thing. We should not underuse or overuse it. Overusing can lead to noise pollution so use it whenever it is necessary.

We should always follow the police officers’ directions and traffic signals. We should not risk our lives by working against them. Thus, we must follow the same.

Traffic rules are made for the protection of the drivers. The driving tests are also conducted keeping in mind the same purpose. Knowledge of traffic signs is also necessary.

Responsible driving is very important and hence there is a need to inculcate healthy habits too. There is a need to give up drinking as drinking and driving is risky and considered as a crime.

In the end, I would request you to be a responsible driver and a citizen too for the sake of our own safety and other people on the road.

Road safety tips for younger children

It’s never too early to start teaching your children about road safety. Here are some road rules to help little ones keep safety top of mind.

1. Traffic is dangerous

Explain to your little one that while cars on the road may be fun to look at, it’s important to keep a safe distance. Try taking your child outside and talking to them about it while you watch cars together. Teach your child that cars have the right of way on the road and cannot see children well due their smaller size.

2. Never go near the road without an adult and always hold hands

Children under 7 years should never go near the road alone and should be on the side of you away from the traffic. Try making up a song or game to remind your little one to hold your hand before crossing the street.

3. Stop, look and listen before crossing the road

Practice on a quiet road together and model the importance of stopping, looking both ways and listening for oncoming traffic before crossing the road the next time you cross together. Even when there is no traffic, it is important to repeat this behaviour.

4. Wear bright colours

Explain to your little one that bright and reflective clothing helps them to be seen by others in darker lighting or bad weather. To make it fun for them, ask them about their favourite piece of bright clothing or their favourite colour that they could wear the next time you need to go out when there is poor visibility.

5. Practice driveway safety

Road safety is important to practice at home too, as driveways can often be the source of tragic injuries for children. Teach your little ones about the dangers of driveways at home and when out walking, and make sure to look around for your child when entering or leaving your driveway.

When can my child cross the road alone?

All children are different and show different levels of independence at different ages. Letting them cross the road independently can be a tough decision, as you will need to consider their development and what the roads are like where you live. Children are not ready to navigate roads alone until they are fully aware of road safety rules and can put them into practice. They should also be able to judge how fast traffic is moving and how far away it is, so they are able to cross the road safely.

Be a smart cycler Teach your children to ride their bicycle with traffic, use appropriate hand signals, wear a well-fitting helmet, use bicycle lanes where available, and ensure that their bicycle has working brakes, a reflector and a light.

Road safety tips for teens

Teens are driven to seek more thrills than children and adults. While this is a natural part of their development, it can lead to more dangerous risk taking. Talk to your teen about these safety tips to help them make smart choices when you are not around to supervise.

1. Be alert and watch out for hazards

As tempting as it may be to look at a phone, wear headphones or chat with friends while crossing the street, always pay complete attention. Stop whatever you are doing, look both ways and listen for oncoming traffic.

2. Don’t take risks around roads

Games involving busy streets like throwing a ball around in the road or running in front of cars are extremely dangerous.

3. Avoid peer pressure

Your friends may want to engage in unsafe behaviours while near the road, but it is important for your safety to say no.

Road safety tips for children with disabilities

You know your child and their environment best. As you teach your child about road safety, consider any additional needs they might have. For example: 

• Children with hearing impairments may not hear the noise of traffic – horns, cars, motorbikes etc – so teach them to watch for traffic very carefully. 
• Children with autism, behavioural and intellectual disabilities may like to wander and often have a reduced sense of danger. They might walk or run into the road, onto railway tracks or near water. As one precaution, make sure to alert your neighbours and others in your local community of this possibility. 

How to cross the road safely in 5 steps

1. find a safe place to cross.

Make sure you can see in all directions and that drivers can see you, too. If there is a designated crossing area, use it and explain to your child how they work.

Leave a safe amount of distance between yourself and the road.

3. Look both ways

Make sure to take your time looking around for any oncoming traffic. If traffic is coming, let it pass. Children are not able to judge speed as well as adults.

Sometimes you can hear traffic before you can see it.

5. Safely cross

Go straight across and don’t run. Only go when there is enough time and continue to look and listen as you go. Look out for cyclists and quieter vehicles, as you may not hear them approaching and never use a mobile phone or other device while crossing.

Take action for road safety

By speaking to your local officials, your child's school and community groups about road safety you can raise awareness about effective measures that help reduce injuries and save lives. These include:  

• Enact and enforce legislation to keep urban traffic speeds on residential streets and on school routes where traffic and children come into direct contact below 30 km/h.
• Separate vulnerable road users by providing walking paths for pedestrians and bicycle lanes for cyclists.
• Incorporate road safety education with practical on-road training into the primary and secondary school curriculum.

Firstly, let’s think about traffic rules. They’re like the rules of a game. Imagine playing a game without any rules. It would be chaos, right? Traffic rules are like those game rules. They keep us safe. Wearing seat belts, stopping at red lights, not using phones while driving – these are all rules we should follow.

Secondly, let’s talk about signs and signals. You know the red, yellow, and green lights on the roads? They are our guides. Red means stop. Green means go. Yellow means slow down. It’s simple, right? Then there are signs, like ‘stop’, ‘go slow’, ‘no entry’. They tell us what to do and keep us safe.

Imagine playing a game without rules. It would be chaos, wouldn’t it? The same goes for the roads. Traffic rules are like the rules of a game. They guide us when we’re driving or walking. They tell us when to stop and when to go, where to turn, and how fast we can drive. These rules are not just to control us, but to protect us.

Now, let’s talk about traffic signals. They are like our teachers. They tell us when to stop, get ready, and go. Red means stop, yellow is for getting ready, and green is for go. It’s just like playing the game of Simon says. When we follow these signals, we make sure we are safe and others are too.

Then comes the zebra crossing. Why do you think it’s called a zebra crossing? Because, just like zebras in the wild, it helps pedestrians cross the road safely. It’s a place where cars know they have to stop and let people walk. It’s like a safe path for all of us to cross the road without fear.

Let’s not forget the speed limit. It’s like a limit on how much candy we can eat. Eating too much candy can make us sick, and driving too fast can lead to accidents. Speed limits are there to make sure we drive at a safe pace.

But what happens when we break these rules? Accidents! Just like when you touch a hot stove, ignoring traffic rules can hurt us badly. Accidents can cause pain and sadness. They can change lives in a split second. And the sad part is, most of these accidents can be prevented if we follow traffic rules.

In conclusion, traffic rules are like the rules of a game, the teacher who guides us, the limit on our candies, and the protector from accidents. They are there for our safety and the safety of others. So, let’s promise ourselves that we will follow these rules. Not because we have to, but because we care about our lives and the lives of others.

Safety is thrust into the spotlight when someone gets hurt.

You know safety is important, but how do you get everyone on board?

Of course, you're committed to safety, but when demands on your time and your people increase, it's harder to keep it a priority. 

In a busy work environment, it's easiest to keep safety top of mind with a safety speech. A motivational safety speech unites people positively around safety excellence. It safeguards your culture.

If you want employees to look out for each other, they need to be motivated.

Safety leaders usually rely on fear-based messages to gain safety compliance. In the short term, they work. Sustaining a safety culture requires motivation. A motivational safety speech builds positive momentum, and long term buys into safety. 

Training is the most critical component of a companies safety management program. Everyone benefits from a safety speech through fewer workplace injuries, reduced stress, and a better team environment.

Safety training allows employees to learn their jobs properly. 

According to OSHA, Thirty-four states have requirements or voluntary guidelines for workplace injury and illness prevention programs. They recommend initial training and refresher training. 

Many organizations have a safety day, a safety program, and regular safety moments that require a safety speech. To plan your safety speech consider the following:

The Audience. 

Many safety speeches evolve around front line workers. Because they are on the front line, they are often most at risk. A crowd like this tends to be hands-on, so keep your speech active and work-related. Continue to involve this audience in your safety speech; ask them for feedback and ideas.

All parts of an organization are part of safety, including administration, leadership, and management. Especially if they are not a front line, you need their buy-in. Safety is a priority for everyone, but it's not top of mind (their most crucial safety alert is a paper cut!) With this audience you need to build a logical argument to show them how safety is a priority, especially for the front line. It's a part of your culture.

The Current Safety Environment.

Progress should be calculated and recognized for it to count. Your safety speech is the ideal time to acknowledge progress, appreciate the effort, and highlight the opportunity to improve. Have these stats available to weave into the safety speech.

Also, report misses, near misses, and any occupational health safety policy change.

A GREAT SAFETY SPEECH GOALS:

• Give people permission to think about and be involved in safety culture proactively.
• It should recognize and ( sometimes) reward safe behavior
• Make it safe to speak up about unsafe conditions
• Sell people on safety
• Build a team culture around safety
• Encourage people to slow down when it comes to safety
• The role of stress on safety

Interweave these ideas into your safety speech messaging.

Remember to keep your message firm but uplifting.

Listening to accident statistics or learning about new procedures can be annoying to employees. Keep your message positive and reassuring. Your team needs to feel like they are achieving something, and their efforts are contributing to a safety culture.

Offer examples and suggestions for improvement—layout strategies that work and how we can be more successful. In any safety speech, people will only remember several points, so keep it short and memorable.

To the Virginia Tech community,

Today I am troubled by the divisions in our community, as we find ourselves faced with challenges and conflicts that are painful, difficult to manage, and nearly impossible to communicate about when emotions are high.

Last night, 82 protesters (largely students) were arrested for trespassing after occupying the Graduate Life Center lawn for three days and repeatedly refusing to comply with university policy and public safety regulations. While I am grateful the incident was resolved peacefully by Virginia Tech Police, I was saddened by the way our officers were treated. I am also deeply disappointed to see members of our community choose uncivil and unlawful behavior over purposeful engagement in difficult conversations and robust debate that should be part of the Virginia Tech experience.

Virginia Tech strongly supports free speech , even when the content of that speech may be disagreeable to some. However, those rights do not extend beyond the point where they interfere with the rights of others, violate our policies, the Code of Virginia, or federal laws and/or create a threat to safety for others.

There have been many opportunities to engage in civil discussions. Since Oct. 7 of last year, I have met with the Students for Peace and Justice in Palestine, the Muslim Student Association, the Middle Eastern and North African Student Association, and Hillel at Virginia Tech. I have met with undergraduate and graduate student leaders, and the Faculty Senate. During the Board of Visitors meeting on April 9, I attempted to engage the masked protestors in conversation, but was shouted down.

Despite my disappointment in the behavior of some, I am heartened by those who are working to bring us together, and the strength of the ties that bind us as a community.

I am proud of our Student Affairs team who help and support our students and listen to their concerns. I am thankful for our strong commitment to our students’ academic success, health and well-being, and experiences that prepare them for future success. I am grateful to those who, in the reality of a divided global landscape, aspire to be part of the solution by giving our students the skills to navigate the world and make it better. And I appreciate those who choose peaceful, respectful protest, and seek to understand others through difficult, yet civil discourse across differences.

Looking toward the end of the semester, as students, faculty, and staff finish their year-end work and we prepare to celebrate the achievements of our graduates at their commencement ceremonies, we must commit to respect others and the continued growth of the campus we call home — a place that is understanding and safe, where all can learn and contribute to the world.

Never has the world needed Hokies more.

Good Morning Dear Students!

Today, I am standing here in front of you all as your class teacher and also to deliver a speech on road safety. Now you are no longer small kids who do not know the safety rules while walking on the road. There’s a great saying, “It’s better to be safe than sorry”. However, we tend to forget all this and become carless at times so much so that we risk our lives and put it in danger.

Don’t we keep hearing the news of the count of people who become a victim of road rage or get involved in road accidents? Unfortunately, some die right on the spot and some receive serious injuries that last for the lifetime. Accidents from vehicle have become a big reason behind increased death rates in our country and amidst the time when the government is implementing road safety measures.

Not many of you would know that it is Abu Dhabi which is infamous for holding the highest rate of road deaths in the world. On an average, there are 38 deaths every month because of fatal injuries caused on the road traffic and mainly 0 to 14 year-old children are involved in such cases.

Hence, this establishes the fact that everyone especially pedestrians must remain vigilant while taking the road and must adhere to the safety rules. It is a pedestrian who is chiefly responsible for the accident as it is only when he/she walks carelessly not paying any heed to the traffic signal or do not walk on the designated crosswalk that fatal cases of injuries occur. So I request all of you to remain watchful and never be in a hurry while being on the road. Besides, many people are often seen disrupting the usual flow of traffic, please note that it can also prove very dangerous to one’s lives and therefore should strictly avoid it. Always use zebra crossing in order to walk down the road. Keep your eyes and ears open and listen to the sound of horns if blown around you.

If you are going to travel via public transport and if it’s a bus, then patiently wait for the bus to stop and board it thereafter. Likewise, if you are going to step out of it, then wait for it to stop properly and make sure that no other vehicle is obstructing your path. Make it a point to carry some reflective material so that the drivers can sense your presence from a distance itself. Never ignore stop signs as when people do that serious road accidents occur.

If you are riding a bicycle on the road, then be even more careful and make sure that your bicycle is in a sound condition with lights and working brakes at their proper places. Secondly, avoid taking bicycle on a busy road and try to use public transport.

However, there is no guarantee that through these preventive measures we will be able to avoid fatal cases of road accidents, but we can definitely avert the danger by remaining vigilant on the road and following all the safety rules. Students, always remember that life doesn’t have a reset button, so never be careless.

Hope all of you will remember my words and in fact would educate others about the importance of road safety rules.

Road Safety Speech – 2

Dear Society Members – a very good morning to all of you!

As the president of our society’s organizing committee, I have organized an event based on ‘Road Safety Week’ starting from today wherein I would like deliver a talk on some important road safety measures for the members of my society. As we all read in newspapers the increasing cases of road accidents particularly that of the young generation of today, I sincerely hope that through the medium of this talk some awareness could be spread amongst the people and they learn to become more responsible and extra careful while walking on the road.

Please allow me to put forth some of the reasons which result in road accidents. Primarily, driving a vehicle beyond the prescribed limit is what causes most accidents on the road. Some drivers or owners themselves drive recklessly and flout traffic rules without any fear of punishment. Besides, people who are drivers by profession have to drive throughout the day and sometimes during the night too that they fail to remain attentive and cause accidents on the road. However, now that our government has enforced strict road safety rules and a hefty fine, especially on the drink and drive cases, the incidents of road rage have significantly come down.

Talking about the youngsters, I have no hesitation to admit that they drive very irresponsibly and consider road as their racing track, which again results in fatal road accidents. It becomes the responsibility of parents to keep a watch over them and make them realize the importance of safety rules. Sometimes, the vehicle is faulty and remains out of service for months that its breaks or clutch don’t work and leads to major road accidents. On the top of this, uneven road surfaces and potholes contribute to the poor road conditions and increase the graph of road accidents.

Recently, a man after dropping his kid to school died after falling in a pothole. There is no dearth of such incidents in our country and it’s high time that our government should come out of its state of negligence and own responsibility for the poor maintenance of public infrastructure. Then, awareness campaign should be run everywhere so that the citizens of our country grow serious towards adopting road safety measures. In fact, my advice to the government would be to suspend the license of those who are involved in the cases of road rage. The offenders must be put in jail and severe punishment should be levied.

Less or no use of seat belts and helmets also contribute to such cases. According to a recent report, it’s the two-wheelers and trucks that cause around 40% of deaths in our country. In India, the cases of road accidents are three times higher than that existing in developed nations of the world. So the only way to curb death rates caused due to road accidents is to sincerely follow safety regulations while driving on the road or while being on foot for that matter. Those who are driving should not exceed their speed limit so that if the need arises, the vehicle can be stopped for the passerby or seeing something coming on your way.

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen!

First of all, I want to thank all the event organizers and management team for doing such a great effort for public welfare and of course, all the people who are gathered here with us all. Today, this social event has been organized in this locality because the number of road accidents are rising day by day and thus people need to get aware of this public issue.

More than 1.2 million people are killed and 20 to 50 million people suffer from serious injuries worldwide every year due to road accidents and hence it has become a serious issue these days. According to a prediction of a report known as “Global Status Report on Road Safety”, road accidents will become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. We should consider this as an alarm for us because most of the road accidents are the cause of carelessness and hence it is becoming a big issue.

There could many reasons for the happening of the road accidents. Negligence or the recklessness of the driver or any other person is the main cause of road accidents. People do not follow the traffic instructions and rules properly and hence it leads to severe injuries and deaths. We can normally see people who jump traffic signals, driving while drunk, not wearing seat belts etc. We all know that what kind of rules and regulation are there in India. There are no proper rules, regulation and strictness on the roads. There are hardly very few places in India, where they follow proper rules. But it is not only up to the government but people should also have some respect towards the rules and regulations.

In many places in India, there is a lack of emergency services for treatment of people who are caught by an accident. There are many other reasons for the road accidents. To get a driving license has become quite easy these days and it is dangerous because the people who do not know about driving properly can harm others who are using the same road. Population explosion, economics developments, industrialization and motorization in the country are the roots of these accidents. As much as the country will get modernized, the use of vehicles will increase. The problem of the road safety is of everyone who is using the roads.

There is urgency for the strict rules and regulations for safety on roads. Everyone should follow the instructions and rules while driving or while using a vehicle. These days, the craze of bikes between youngsters is increasing and hence they should follow the rules such as wearing a helmet and speed limit. While using a car, we should always use the seatbelt and maintain the speed limit. Harsh driving or driving while drunk is the main cause of accidents that happens with the cars.

Our lives are in our hands and thus it is necessary to follow rules and proper instructions while using a road. On this note I would like to thank all the people for gathering here and for making this social event successful.

Good Morning Respected Principal, Respected Teachers and My Dear Students!

Today, this special assembly has been organized for an important reason regarding vehicles that students are using these days. As a teacher in this school, I feel that it’s my duty to think about your safety when it is related with school.

Yesterday, I saw a student who was on his bike and riding ruthlessly throughout the road. It could be dangerous for anyone who was using the road or for himself. Ruthless driving is one of the main causes of the road accidents. There are many other cases when we have seen the students who did not even have a driving license were driving recklessly on the road and which is quite shameful for us because it is a disobedience of the rules of our country.

If we talk about road safety, then it can be only possible when we will follow the rules and regulations of the road safety. The rules differ from two wheelers to four wheelers. If you are on two wheelers, then it is important to wear a helmet and drive in a limited speed. If you are on four wheelers, then it is important to wear seatbelt and of course maintaining the speed limit. One of the main causes of road crashes accidents are due to drink and drive. The accidents that happen due to drink and drive or harsh driving are the cause of driver’s carelessness and lack of strictness on the roads.

According to the report of Global status given on 2013, more than two lakh people are killed in road accidents in India every year. Around one hundred people are killed and thousands of people get injured in road accidents everyday due to the carelessness of drivers. One reason for road crashes could be the condition of the roads. In India, there are many roads that are not in a good condition and became dangerous for driving. Especially in rainy season, the condition of the roads became poor and they get cracks in it. The poor condition of roads is still a big tragedy of India.

It creates problems while driving and sometimes the vehicle gets stuck on the road due to cracks and water. There are very few places in India where these problems do not happen or roads remains in a good condition during rainy season. The cause of this problem is the height of corruption in India. Breaking traffic rules and safety rules are normal because it just needs some money to get out of the trouble and that is it. Tripling on bikes are prohibited for the purpose of safety but still we can see many people doing the same freely because there is no fear in the mind of the people because they know that all they need is just money.

This problem will get deeper as we go through it and thus it needs a solution. It needs the contribution of everyone but not only of the government. I hope that from now every student as well as other people will remember this that safety is first. On this note, I would like to conclude my speech and extend special thanks to our honorable principal for giving me this opportunity.

Road Safety Speech – 5

Hello everyone! Today as we have gathered here, I take this opportunity to talk about the most significant public health issues nowadays; that is – “Road Safety”.

Let’s begin with the statistics first. It will help us assess the graveness of the situation. According to a recently released report by the World Health Organization, nearly 1.35 Million people lose their life in road accidents globally, every year. Pedestrians and two wheeler riders constitute the most vulnerable lot. The stats of India are no better, with nearly 1.5 Lakh people dying annually due to road accidents. The figures are not only alarming, but also indicate that we are way behind our agendas of development and road safety. I am sorry to say, but given to the present situation, a 50% reduction in road accidents in India by 2020, is a distant dream.

Now that we know that what the stats reveal, it’s time to talk about – causes, effects and counter measures. The world today is developing at a fast pace – growing economy, better business prospects and better job opportunities, have in a way accelerated the sale of all types of commercial and private vehicles. The situation is critical in middle income or developing nations, where streets could be seen bustling with cars, two wheelers, pedestrians etc. In Indian subcontinent, a few Middle East and African countries, animals, carts, road side vendors are easily spotted on the road; adding up to the possibility of a road accident.

Though, we might blame it all on the factors like over population, excess of vehicles and administrative apathy; we cannot shrug off the responsibility that we hold. Figures reveal that the prime causes of road accidents leading to casualties are road rage and over speeding, followed by apathy towards traffic rules. In India alone, nearly 50000 riders lose their life every year, for not wearing a helmet. These figures could have been significantly lower if they had just worn a helmet. What sense does it make to risk your life when it could be saved easily?

It is hard to accept, but accidents are caused by our own disdain to follow the rules than by anything else. Though the departments like police, public works department, have a responsibility to ensure the safety of all users of the road; but firstly the responsibility for the safety of our own as well as others, lies in our own conduct i.e. how we behave while on road. By breaking the traffic rules we not only compromise our own safety but also the safety of others.

A fatal road accident is the biggest tragedy that could happen to your family. Believe every word of it – road accidents are painful not only for the victims but also for those who love them. Seeing someone you love, writhing in pain, is unimaginably heart breaking. You might leave your own or someone else’s family scarred for life; living in deprivation, pain and sorrow. Is it worth to be negligent for a momentary pleasure if it leads to lifelong pain and sorrow? Well, it’s your choice to choose life or death. I would definitely choose life always.

Next obvious question is – Why? Why we don’t follow the rules, why don’t we wear helmets, seat belts, why do we jump the signal, why do we compete with other unruly riders or motorists?  Apathy towards following road safety rules is a habit. Habit that has arisen due to the ignorance towards the safety of our own, as well as others. Today, we love to be on time, we love to compete and we hate delays. Of course your time is precious, but is it more precious than life? Not following the traffic rules and copying other unruly road users; could have fatal consequences.

The governments are more concerned to curb down road accidents and have also paced up preventive measures. Traffic signals have been installed on every crossing; the roads are well lit up; there is separate lane and bridges for the pedestrians. Some places also have dedicated roads for motorcyclists and heavy vehicles like buses etc. Many things are being done to ensure our safe transit, but it is upon us to utilize the resources in a safe way. Remember the roads are brightly lit and separated for the safety of various users, but not for over speeding and stunting. Authorities can only make laws for our safety, but the first responsibility to implement those lies on us.

For the unruly ones who still don’t follow, strict punishments should be given like – hefty fine and imprisonment. Authorities must adopt a policy of zero tolerance towards traffic rules violations. Then only we could achieve the national as well as global road safety norms.

Or, if you must say something, then make sure it is nuanced like – I’m just paraphrasing a former Mossad agent here – no Palestinian over the age of four is an innocent civilian and they all deserve to be starved to death. Certainly make sure you don’t use controversial words like “genocide” or “occupation”, even if those are accurate descriptions according to international law and UN human rights experts . Best to avoid considering Palestinians as humans altogether, rather think of them as Israel’s defense minister does – “ human animals ” – if you want to avoid unpleasantness.

Asna Tabassum, a first-generation south Asian American Muslim from near Los Angeles, is the latest person to learn this lesson the hard way. Tabassum, who is graduating from the University of Southern California (USC) with a major in biomedical engineering and a minor in resistance to genocide, was recently named her class valedictorian and due to give a speech at her May graduation. Giving a valedictorian address, in which a student reflects on shared experiences and imparts wisdom about the future, is a major honour. It would have been a high point in Tabassum’s academic life.

Then on Monday, USC abruptly cancelled her speech. Instead of being recognized for her academic achievements, Tabassum found herself in the middle of a controversy which brings together some of the most emotive issues of the moment: the war on college campuses, the anti-Palestinian assaults on free speech, and the one-sided nature of “cancel culture”.

USC, I should note, didn’t specifically mention Palestine or Israel when they took the unprecedented decision to cancel Tabassum’s speech. Instead Andrew Guzman, provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs, cited safety concerns.

“[O]ver the past several days, discussion relating to the selection of our valedictorian has taken on an alarming tenor,” Guzman explained. “The intensity of feelings … has escalated to the point of creating substantial risks relating to security and disruption at commencement. We cannot ignore the fact that similar risks have led to harassment and even violence at other campuses.”

It’s not clear whether Guzman was talking about Tabassum’s safety or the safety of other students. USC declined my request to clarify their official statement. But here’s a somewhat more straightforward description of what appears to have happened : campus pro-Israel groups trawled through Tabassum’s social media history in order to find posts that were sympathetic to Palestine and then proceeded to smear her with bad-faith accusations of antisemitism. Instead of standing up for a student that USC had recognized as exemplary, the university caved into pressure to silence her. The Council on American-Islamic Relations has called the decision to cancel the speech “cowardly” and the reasoning around safety concerns “disingenuous”.

What exactly did Tabassum say on social media? The issue appears to be a link on her Instagram page – which the student says she posted five years ago – to a slideshow written by someone else urging people “to learn about what’s happening in Palestine”. Part of this document – which, again, is not written by Tabassum –describes Zionism as “a racist settler-colonial ideology that advocates for a Jewish ethnostate built on Palestinian land”. Another part of the presentation argues that the only way towards justice is the abolition of the state of Israel and the creation of one Palestinian state where “both Arabs and Jews can live together without an ideology that specifically advocates for the ethnic cleansing of one of them”.

It’s perfectly valid to debate, and take offence, at the substance of the content Tabassum linked to. But cancelling her speech under the vague pretext of “safety” is disingenuous. Let’s be very clear: if Tabassum were pro-Israel and her Instagram linked to any of the very many genocidal things that the Israeli government had said about Palestinians, there is little chance her speech would have been cancelled. Jared Kushner, let’s not forget, was just at Harvard advocating for the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. ( Kushner said that he thought Israel should move civilians out of Gaza into the desert while it “cleans up” the strip. He added that the Palestinians should absolutely not have their own state and mused that waterfront property in Gaza could be very valuable.)

As Tabassum has noted , if this was about her safety, USC could have just hired security guards. Rather, she said in a statement, cancelling her speech seems to be about silencing her voice lest she – who, again, is a student minoring in the resistance to genocide program USC offers – say anything about the continuing genocide in Gaza.

“I am not surprised by those who attempt to propagate hatred,” Tabassum said in the statement. “I am surprised that my own university – my home for four years – has abandoned me.”

I am not surprised. While Palestine has always been a fraught issue, the suppression of pro-Palestinian voices has gone into overdrive after the Hamas attack on 7 October. Speak up about the genocide in Gaza, and you are likely to lose a job, an opportunity, or find yourself smeared as an extremist. In November, the artist Ai Weiwei, who had a show in London cancelled after tweeting about the war in Gaza, wryly noted that censorship in the west was “sometimes even worse” than what he faced growing up in Mao Zedong’s China . “Today I see so many people by giving their basic opinions, they get fired, they get censored,” he told Sky News . “This has become very common.”

People who support the attacks on Gaza seem free to say the most depraved and racist things possible about Arabs, Muslims, and Palestinians without facing any consequences whatsoever. The comedian Sarah Silverman , for example, shared (and later deleted) an online post arguing that it was OK to cut off water to the entire population of Gaza, which is very much a war crime. Her career has faced no consequences. A long list of American politicians have openly called for Palestinians to be slaughtered without seeing any real pushback to their speech. The British TV presenter Rachel Riley recently falsely blamed Palestinians for the stabbing attack in Sydney and has faced no career consequences at all.

The proliferation of dehumanizing language about Muslims and Palestinians has had violent consequences: there has been a rise in anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate crimes across the US, including reported offenses on college campuses . There has also been a rise in antisemitism: a very real problem that shouldn’t be minimized or tolerated. What also shouldn’t be tolerated are the dangerous attempts by pro-Israel extremists to label any remotely pro-Palestinian speech, or any criticism of Israel’s actions, as automatically antisemitic.

Conflating the actions of the Israeli state with the Jewish people is dangerous and wrong, and yet this is precisely what many pro-Israel voices are doing in an attempt to suppress any support of Palestine. And this strategy is working. In the current climate, a US politician can call for Gaza to be “ nuked ” without being censured. Dare to do so much as wear a keffiyeh (a traditional Palestinian scarf) on a college campus, however, and pro-Israel voices will go on primetime television and accuse you of being a Nazi . Jonathan Greenblatt, the executive director of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), recently told Morning Joe (and faced no pushback from the hosts) that wearing a keffiyeh was the same as wearing a swastika .

Even those who don’t give a damn about Palestinians should care about the suppression of free speech and the attempts to eradicate any mention of the P-word on college campuses. Certainly you’d think conservatives would care: the right are constantly going on about censorship in universities and campus safety. It’s a nonstop talking point on Fox News. Funnily enough, however, these free speech warriors don’t seem particularly concerned about censorship when it comes to Palestine.

What’s left out of these nonstop discussions of campus safety is this: there isn’t a single safe campus left in Gaza. Israel, with the unconditional aid of the US, has destroyed almost every kindergarten, school, and university in Gaza. It has killed at least 100 Palestinian academics . It has decimated every cultural institution. There are over 13,000 dead children in Gaza who will never have the opportunity of an education . You should not be able to talk about campus safety without mentioning the fact that, thanks to US-backed Israeli air strikes, every campus in Gaza is now a graveyard.

Colleges Have Gone off the Deep End. There Is a Way Out.

I had my head in a law book when I heard the drums. That was the sound of the first campus protest I ever experienced. I’d come to Harvard Law School in the fall of 1991 as a graduate of a small, very conservative Christian college in Nashville. Many of my college classmates had passionate religious and political commitments, but street protest was utterly alien to the Christian culture of the school. We were rule followers, and public protest looked a bit too much like anarchy for our tastes.

But Harvard was different. The law school was every bit as progressive as my college was conservative, and protest was part of the fabric of student life, especially then. This is the era when a writer for GQ magazine, John Sedgwick, called the law school “ Beirut on the Charles ” because it was torn apart by disputes over race and sex. There were days when campus protests were festive, almost celebratory. There were other days when the campus was seething with rage and fury.

That first protest was in support of faculty diversity, and it was relatively benign. I walked outside and followed the sound of the drums. A group of roughly 100 protesters was marching in front of the law school library, and soon they were joined by an allied group of similar size from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. I watched as they danced, sang and listened to speeches by student activists and sympathetic professors. That first protest had an angry edge, but it was also completely peaceful and endlessly fascinating to a kid from a small town in Kentucky who’d never seen a drum circle before.

But things soon got worse, much worse. Protests got more unruly, and student activists got more aggressive. The entire campus was in a state of conflict. In Sedgwick’s words, students were “waging holy war on one another.” Small groups of students occupied administrative offices, and angry activists shouted down their political opponents in class and often attempted to intimidate them outside class. I was shouted down repeatedly, and twice I received disturbing handwritten notes in my campus mailbox in response to my anti-abortion advocacy. My student peers told me to “go die.”

Watching the protests and experiencing the shout-downs changed the course of my career. I was both enthralled by the power of protest and repulsed by the efforts to silence dissenters. Given the immense cultural influence of American higher education, I agreed with the Supreme Court’s famous words in the 1957 case Sweezy v. New Hampshire : “Teachers and students must always remain free to inquire, to study and to evaluate, to gain new maturity and understanding; otherwise, our civilization will stagnate and die.” Those words, combined with my own negative encounters at Harvard, helped define my legal career. From that point forward, I would defend free speech.

It’s been more than 30 years since that first campus protest, and over that time I’ve seen countless protests, I’ve defended countless protesters — and I’ve even been protested against at several schools. In the course of those cases and confrontations, I’ve learned that the issue of campus protest is remarkably complex and that campus culture is at least as important as law and policy in setting the boundaries of debate.

There is profound confusion on campus right now around the distinctions among free speech, civil disobedience and lawlessness. At the same time, some schools also seem confused about their fundamental academic mission. Does the university believe it should be neutral toward campus activism — protecting it as an exercise of the students’ constitutional rights and academic freedoms but not cooperating with student activists to advance shared goals — or does it incorporate activism as part of the educational process itself, including by coordinating with the protesters and encouraging their activism?

The simplest way of outlining the ideal university policy toward protest is to say that it should protect free speech, respect civil disobedience and uphold the rule of law. That means universities should protect the rights of students and faculty members on a viewpoint-neutral basis, and they should endeavor to make sure that every member of the campus community has the same access to campus facilities and resources.

That also means showing no favoritism among competing ideological groups in access to classrooms, in the imposition of campus penalties and in access to educational opportunities. All groups should have equal rights to engage in the full range of protected speech, including by engaging in rhetoric that’s hateful to express and painful to hear. Public chants like “Globalize the intifada” may be repugnant to many ears, but they’re clearly protected by the First Amendment at public universities and by policies protecting free speech and academic freedom at most private universities.

Still, reasonable time, place and manner restrictions are indispensable in this context. Time, place and manner restrictions are content-neutral legal rules that enable a diverse community to share the same space and enjoy equal rights.

Noise limits can protect the ability of students to study and sleep. Restricting the amount of time any one group can demonstrate on the limited open spaces on campus permits other groups to use the same space. If one group is permitted to occupy a quad indefinitely, for example, then that action by necessity excludes other organizations from the same ground. In that sense, indefinitely occupying a university quad isn’t simply a form of expression; it also functions as a form of exclusion. Put most simply, student groups should be able to take turns using public spaces, for an equal amount of time and during a roughly similar portion of the day.

Civil disobedience is distinct from First Amendment-protected speech. It involves both breaking an unjust law and accepting the consequences. There is a long and honorable history of civil disobedience in the United States, but true civil disobedience ultimately honors and respects the rule of law. In a 1965 appearance on “Meet the Press,” the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described the principle perfectly: “When one breaks the law that conscience tells him is unjust, he must do it openly, he must do it cheerfully, he must do it lovingly, he must do it civilly — not uncivilly — and he must do it with a willingness to accept the penalty.”

But what we’re seeing on a number of campuses isn’t free expression, nor is it civil disobedience. It’s outright lawlessness. No matter the frustration of campus activists or their desire to be heard, true civil disobedience shouldn’t violate the rights of others. Indefinitely occupying a quad violates the rights of other speakers to use the same space. Relentless, loud protest violates the rights of students to sleep or study in peace. And when protests become truly threatening or intimidating, they can violate the civil rights of other students, especially if those students are targeted on the basis of their race, sex, color or national origin.

The result of lawlessness is chaos and injustice. Other students can’t speak. Other students can’t learn. Teachers and administrators can’t do their jobs.

In my experience as a litigator , campus chaos is frequently the result of a specific campus culture. Administrators and faculty members will often abandon any pretense of institutional neutrality and either cooperate with their most intense activist students or impose double standards that grant favored constituencies extraordinary privileges. For many administrators, the very idea of neutrality is repugnant. It represents a form of complicity in injustice that they simply can’t and won’t stomach. So they nurture and support one side. They scorn the opposition, adopting a de facto posture that says , “To my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law.”

I’ve experienced this firsthand. I vividly remember representing a campus Christian group in a dispute at Tufts University in 2000 . The group had been derecognized for requiring that student leaders of their group share that group’s traditional sexual ethic, which reserves sex for heterosexual marriage. You might disagree strongly with that view, but granting religious groups the flexibility to impose faith-based requirements on religious leaders fits squarely within the American tradition of free exercise of religion.

Tufts is a private university, so it has some flexibility in suppressing religious expression on campus, but it had no excuse for attempting to toss a Christian group from campus at the same time that it permitted acts of intimidation against those Christian students. For example, at the most contentious moment of the dispute, Tufts officials prevented my student clients and me from entering the hearing room where their appeal was being heard, while a crowd of protesters gathered in a darkened hallway, pressed up around us and herded us into a corner of the hall. There was no campus outrage at this act of intimidation. We saw no administrative response.

University complicity in chaos isn’t unusual. In a case I worked on when I was president of the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, we discovered that administrators at Washington State University’s Pullman campus had actually helped plan a disruptive protest against a play put on by a student director, an intentionally provocative show that mocked virtually every group on campus.

University or faculty participation in unlawful protest isn’t confined to the cases I worked on. At Oberlin College, administrative facilitation of ugly and defamatory student protests outside a local business ultimately cost the school $36 million in damages. At Columbia, hundreds of sympathetic faculty members staged their own protest in support of the student encampment on the quad, and there are reports that other faculty members have attempted to block members of the media from access to the student encampment.

None of this is new. All of it creates a culture of impunity for the most radical students. Disruptive protesters are rarely disciplined, or they get mere slaps on the wrist. They’re hailed as heroes by many of their professors. Administrators look the other way as protesters pitch their tents on the quad — despite clear violations of university policy. Then, days later, the same administrators look at the tent city on campus, wring their hands, and ask, “How did this spiral out of control?”

There is a better way . When universities can actually recognize and enforce the distinctions among free speech, civil disobedience and lawlessness, they can protect both the right of students to protest and the rights of students to study and learn in peace.

In March a small band of pro-Palestinian students at Vanderbilt University in Nashville pushed past a security guard so aggressively that they injured him , walked into a university facility that was closed to protest and briefly occupied the building. The university had provided ample space for protest, and both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian students had been speaking and protesting peacefully on campus since Oct. 7.

But these students weren’t engaged in free speech. Nor were they engaged in true civil disobedience. Civil disobedience does not include assault, and within hours the university shut them down. Three students were arrested in the assault on the security guard, and one was arrested on charges of vandalism. More than 20 students were subjected to university discipline, three were expelled , and one was suspended.

The message was clear: Every student can protest, but protest has to be peaceful and lawful. In taking this action, Vanderbilt was empowered by its posture of institutional neutrality . It does not take sides in matters of public dispute. Its fundamental role is to maintain a forum for speech, not to set the terms of the debate and certainly not to permit one side to break reasonable rules that protect education and safety on campus.

Vanderbilt is not alone in its commitment to neutrality. The University of Chicago has long adhered to the Kalven principles , a statement of university neutrality articulated in 1967 by a committee led by one of the most respected legal scholars of the last century, Harry Kalven Jr. At their heart, the Kalven principles articulate the view that “the instrument of dissent and criticism is the individual faculty member or the individual student. The university is the home and sponsor of critics; it is not itself the critic. It is, to go back once again to the classic phrase, a community of scholars.”

Contrast Vanderbilt’s precise response with the opposing extremes. In response to the chaos at Columbia, the school is finishing the semester with hybrid classes, pushing thousands of students online. The University of Southern California canceled its main stage commencement ceremony , claiming that the need for additional safety measures made the ceremony impractical. At both schools the inability to guarantee safety and order has diminished the educational experience of their students.

While U.S.C. and Columbia capitulate, other schools have taken an excessively draconian approach. Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas posted on X, “Students joining in hate-filled, antisemitic protests at any public college or university in Texas should be expelled.” On April 25 the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression sent a forceful letter to the president of the University of Texas at Austin condemning the display of force on campus. “U.T. Austin,” it wrote, “at the direction of Gov. Greg Abbott, appears to have pre-emptively banned peaceful pro-Palestinian protesters due solely to their views rather than for any actionable misconduct.”

At Emory University, footage emerged of police tackling a female professor who posed no obvious danger to the police or anyone else. Protests are almost always tense, and there is often no easy way to physically remove protesters from campus, but the video footage of the confrontation with the professor was shocking. It’s hard to conceive of a justification for the violent police response.

At this moment, one has the impression that university presidents at several universities are simply hanging on, hoping against hope that they can manage the crisis well enough to survive the school year and close the dorms and praying that passions cool over the summer.

That is a vain hope. There is no indication that the war in Gaza — or certainly the region — will be over by the fall. It’s quite possible that Israel will be engaged in full-scale war on its northern border against Hezbollah. And the United States will be in the midst of a presidential election that could be every bit as contentious as the 2020 contest.

But the summer does give space for a reboot. It allows universities to declare unequivocally that they will protect free speech, respect peaceful civil disobedience and uphold the rule of law by protecting the campus community from violence and chaos. Universities should not protect students from hurtful ideas, but they must protect their ability to peacefully live and learn in a community of scholars. There is no other viable alternative.
