WSJ: The Saturday Essay - Preparing for a Good End of Life
Posted In: JAHF in the News , Serious Illness & End of Life
The Wall Street Journal has published an article by Katy Butler, "Preparing for a Good End of Life," featuring JAHF-supported programs and staff member, Amy Berman, RN, LHD, FAAN.
Butler, in an essay adapted from her upcoming book, writes about what she learned from interviewing experts about the health-care system and how to prepare for a good end of life. She explains palliative care and programs like PACE (the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly), which have been supported by the Foundation.
Amy Berman , JAHF senior program officer, shared perspectives from her own experience living with stage IV cancer, saying she was aiming for a “Niagara Falls trajectory.” She’s kept working, ridden a jet ski to the Statue of Liberty, written for the Washington Post , watched her daughter graduate from college and gone snowmobiling in Iceland. “Most doctors,” she says, “focus only on length of life. That’s not my only metric.”
