Assignment: Ada

  • Edit source
  • View history

Assignment: Ada , also known as Ada the Spy in some regions, is a non-canon minigame featured in Resident Evil 4 unlocked after completing the game.

  • 2.1 Loadout
  • 2.2 Plaga Sample locations
  • 3.1 Yellow Herbs

The minigame's plot involves Ada collecting a number of plaga samples as ordered by Albert Wesker (as opposed to collecting the single control plaga sample like in the main game). Ada does so and then reports back to Wesker that the mission was completed. She also states that Krauser was killed despite the implication that he had actually survived.

Although the plot is non-canon, it is interesting to note the ending scene has one of the biggest allusions to Resident Evil 5 in that Albert Wesker talks about "Significant changes in our world".

Gameplay [ ]

Ada wears a unique costume in the minigame which is a military-style uniform as opposed to her red dress as in the main game.

The game begins at the beginning of the island at Wharf A and ends at the Communications tower . The item layout on the map has been reworked for the minigame and pesetas and treasures are not found or used at all. The player must find the five samples of the Las Plagas parasite which are marked on the player's map. The only enemies featured are Ganado militia , Gatling Men , and Jack Krauser as the "boss" in the final area the player must defeat to get the last Plaga Sample.

The minigame is relatively short and is meant to be completed in one play-through as there are no save points during it. Ada starts the game with 6 & 2/4 Bars of health and has a slightly faster movement speed than Leon. The Plaga Samples Ada must collect take up space in the inventory instead of the Keys & Treasures menu.

Loadout [ ]

Ada begins the game with a set loadout with the default size case. In the GameCube, PlayStation 2, and the 2007 PC versions, she doesn't have a knife. In all other releases, she does. There are no other weapons to find besides Hand Grenades and ammo and the Merchant does not appear at all. Ada has the following items and firearms with the following stats;

  • Handgun Ammo x30
  • TMP Ammo x50
  • Rifle Ammo x5
  • Hand Grenade
  • First Aid Spray
  • Scope (semi-auto rifle)

Plaga Sample locations [ ]

Each Plaga Sample takes up 1x2 spaces of inventory. Due to them being mandatory in order to complete the scenario Plaga Samples are the only items in the game that cannot be discarded after putting them in the Attache Case.

Strategy [ ]

  • In the GameCube and PlayStation2 versions, Ada has no knife, so try and conserve ammo and, to open multiple crates, line them up and shoot them in one bullet using the Punisher.
  • Try to not get carried away with the Punisher's high rate of fire.
  • Single-fire the TMP when possible to conserve ammo.
  • Using The TMP full-auto is best saved to be used against shielded militia in close range, or multiple enemies, due to its high fire rate and high bullet consumption.
  • Ada's melee attacks, Fan Kick and Back Kick, are particularly useful, due to your lack of a knife, and need to conserve ammo.
  • Try to avoid Gatling Men whenever possible. They're relatively easy to flank in most presented situations, and not worth wasting ammo over, unless you are in dire need of a First Aid Spray or a Hand Grenade .
  • Krauser is really easy to beat if you do this correctly. When he appears, dodge his attacks and run to the door you originally came from. Then equip your sniper rifle. Reenter the room where Krauser is. He will charge at you from the far end of the walkway, using his plaga arm as a shield. Try and snipe his knees before he reaches you. if you do, when he staggers, try and shoot either his head or upper chest. Repeat that until he reaches you. Just before he reaches you, re-enter that door again, reload and re-enter Krauser's room again. He spawns at the very end of the catwalk. Repeat what's above until he's dead. Grenades are more risky, due to their range, but also work well too if you can time it right. Sustained TMP fire at his knees is also effective. On the Wii, Xbox Live and PSN versions, do this same tactic, but try knifing him when he drops to his knee. This is very useful in speed running, as it only takes a few slashes to defeat him.
  • Discard the Scope for the Semi-Auto Sniper since it is basically useless, this might help when collecting Plaga Samples since you need them in your Attache Case.
  • After the fight with Krauser, no more enemies appear. Anything other than the first four Plaga samples may be discarded to make space in the inventory for the final sample.

Yellow Herbs [ ]

Due to Ada's low health, Yellow Herbs are vital in order to stay alive and take more hits. There are seven in the minigame. Collecting them all raises Ada's max health from 6 & 1/2Bars to 8 1/4 Bars.

Results [ ]

There is no formal results screen displayed at the end of Assignment: Ada . However, a unique credits sequence plays consisting of cutscenes from the main game but with Leon in his Special 1 costume and Ada in her costume from The Mercenaries minigame (The R.P.D uniform and Resident Evil 2 dress respectively).

In the Gamecube version, beating the minigame will unlock the Chicago Typewriter for the main game, in all subsequent releases, however, the weapon unlocks for use in Separate Ways instead.

Checking Out Resident Evil 4’s Extra Content

by RipWitch · Published April 14, 2021 · Updated April 14, 2021

resident evil 4 is assignment ada canon

Checking out Resident Evil 4’s Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, and Mercenaries.

So it’s time for my Resident Evil 4 follow up! At the end of the month, I posted my review for Resident Evil 4 for #MaybeinMarch and mentioned that I’ll be returning to it to talk about the extra content that unlocks after you finish the game once. And well, here it is! This will obviously contain spoilers.

Separate Ways

I did Separate Ways first. Separate Ways stars Ada Wong who you encounter a handful of times in the main game and you don’t really know why she’s here until the end where she takes the Plagas sample, though Leon knows she’s working for Wesker. The only time you see from her perspective is during a short cutscene with Krauser. Well, Separate Ways aims to show us what she was doing and shed some light on some aspects that were unknown from Leon’s point of view. This jumps between 5 chapters and takes about a quarter of the time of the main game (about 4 hours) where you go from the Village, Castle, and the military base. It turns out that Ada was the one that rang the bell signifying that Bingo was about to start, she was supposed to get to Luis before Leon did, she went into the maze after talking to Leon, Los Illuminados strangely has a battleship, Leon didn’t kill Krauser and he very well would have returned for revenge if it wasn’t for Ada, and you get to play as her as she’s getting the rocket launcher for Leon. In addition, since you’re in front of Leon most of the time, you get to see why things were in Leon’s POV like the Graveyard puzzle used to have the Church door key. You also get to see the conversations Ada has with Wesker throughout, you can even spot Leon fighting when they both cross paths, and her reports that you get to listen to or read at the end of each Chapter.

It was pretty interesting to see what Ada was doing, what she ended up influencing what you see with Leon, and some easter eggs. Of course, Separate Ways also brings in some inconsistencies in the meantime. I also love that Ada gets her own text when examining stuff so we get to see her thoughts. It was pretty funny how hers was focused on how dirty everything was (which yah, same girl), so totally roasted paintings, and she just noped out of that struggling white bag in the Prison (again same) which Leon will soon open.

To be honest, I was not liking Separate Ways during the first 2 Chapters. It just threw you so many enemies, that seem to just always grab you and hit you, and you just didn’t have enough ammo to deal with them. It was also very obvious that this was harder than the main game and it certainly didn’t help that you can’t upgrade your weapons and you don’t have as much fire power as you did when you’re going to these locations earlier than you did with Leon. If I wasn’t already going to write this, and that I wanted to unlock the gun, Chicago Typewriter, you get for completing Separate Ways, I most likely would have dropped this. However, my thoughts really changed when going in Chapter 3. I’m not too clear why, but I’m guessing it’s due to just having more firepower by this point as you can buy more guns from the Merchant. And I also didn’t mind not being able to upgrade the guns here by the end, which would have put you even tighter for money.

resident evil 4 is assignment ada canon

It did feel a bit weird having both bosses in Chapter 5, but they weren’t much of a hassle at the end of the day. Krauser’s fight was hard, mostly since the first platform is so small, but his attacks require QTEs and remembering that you can shoot his feet. It gets easier once you go to the other platforms for sure since there are bigger and has ways of blocking Krauser from getting to you quickly. Despite having no access to the crossbow right here, it wasn’t so bad. I did have the crossbow with Lord Saddler, with I believe 30 arrows, and after getting used to aiming it, the only difficult aspect was that he has that one ranged attack that doesn’t give you a dodging QTE. After giving him a healthy dose of damage, he eventually exposes his mouth eye and at first, I didn’t know you had to knife it. Thankfully, once you do, it only takes maybe 2 arrows to expose it again (which, it happened right where he was right in front of me so I got that button prompt).

Also, there was a weird decision here where all the cutscenes here are the original pre-rendered ones. Which… yah don’t look good anymore. Considering Assignment Ada’s cutscenes were remastered, I don’t understand why Separate Ways, which plays a much more important part and is actually canon, wasn’t. I heard Capcom lost the files, but surely they would have had enough money to remake them for those returning to this title and those that are first playing.

Assignment Ada

Next up was Assignment Ada, which isn’t canon as far as I can tell. If it’s meant to be, it’s certainly in a weird position where it has to be right before Leon arrives. Anyway, this is a quick mode where Ada is tasked to collect 5 Plagas samples for Wesker. Wearing an actually practical outfit for the occasion, Ada starts right on the island and needs to make her way into their facility. From there, she has find the samples that’s spread out from each other, with one being held by Krauser. You then just need to just walk out and call for pickup.

resident evil 4 is assignment ada canon

If you looked at my enjoyment level of Separate Ways and flip them, you’d get my thoughts on Assignment Ada. At first, I was excited to see how Assignment Ada would go, however, it got frustrating. Why? The J.J.s. They just keep showing up along with a group of other enemies and every time I died to them multiple times until I finally got lucky enough to pass. It’s even more frustrating as you have to redo all you did before since the checkpoint is when you first entered the area. It doesn’t help that Ada doesn’t have a shotgun in this mode. The Krauser fight was also frustrating as this feels like his hardest encounter yet. You’re facing him in a narrow walkway, but he always seem to dash to me when I was trying to get some distance, always dash when I’m trying to aim for his legs, and that darn attack where he flips and slams his mutated arm down still gets me despite doing the QTE as I couldn’t help but be cornered against a wall. I ended up looking up some tips and found out that exiting and going back in will put Krauser at the other side and he retains the damage he received if you exit again. Though, I never could get a sniper shot in (playing with a controller and all). Though, I ended up dying while doing this and I wasn’t too sure if the damage is retained through Continues, so I ended up ditching that tactic, as I also ended up with less ammo and health items, and hoped for the best.

Finishing this only unlocks the Chicago Typewriter for Separate Ways, which I wish I knew before I already finished Separate Ways.

Also apparently just a knife is so effective on Krauser too, which I randomly ended up finding out a day later and I wish I could try out.

Mercenaries

Mercenaries was the last one I played and it really got me annoyed. This is basically an arcade style mode where you’re tasked with killing as many enemies as you can before the timer reaches zero. Killing enemies net you points and getting a combo of kills nets you even more. Depending on your score, you’ll then get graded from 1 to 5 stars. The scores matter as this is used to unlock more characters and the Handcannon for the main game. You start with Leon, but you can unlock Ada, Krauser, HUNK, and Wesker; with you being able to play 4 maps: Village, Castle, Base, and a new Waterworld area. While you’ll be facing regular enemies that show up, bosses will occasionally spawn in which are harder to take down, but will net you a lot of points. In addition, you can find bonus time in each map in case you need more time. There are some just on the ground, but the ones found in chests gives you

I first planned to do all of these all in a row and unlocking everything. Even knowing that the gun unlock tied to Mercenaries, the Handcannon, involved getting all 5 stars on all maps with all characters. I thought “How hard could it really be”. Oh, my sweet summer past me, naïve to how Mercenaries was. It may be due to already being annoyed and frustrated with Assignment Ada, but I was very annoyed with Mercenaries. And I guess it didn’t help that Leon is considered the worst one out of the bunch from the community (which I definitely agree on). So, with Leon seriously souring on me in Mercs, I decided that I’d just at least unlock every character. And that I did. Well, not until after I went to sleep so I can come back fresh to it.

resident evil 4 is assignment ada canon

Leon is for sure the worst ones out of the bunch. He starts out with the Blacktail and a Riot Gun. The Riot Gun sure helps in crowd control, and he is the only one with a shotgun, but it was just a struggle trying to even break enough to get 1 star. I ended up looking up tips on how to get a high score with Leon (and yah, it’s not helpful just saying it was easy for you, random strangers from years ago) and I happened to just make it past 40,000 and net me a 4 star rating. Which unlocked Ada, who is a but better than Leon. Ada starts with a Punisher, TMP, Semi-auto Rifle, and Incendiary Grenades. The Rifle easily takes down enemies in one shot, she kicks some butt with her Punisher, the TMP definitely comes in handy especially when your combo is just about to go out, and Incendiary Grenades help out when I remember to use them, but she goes down fast and TMP ammo drops the most, with Rifle ammo not dropping or barely dropping. She only took me maybe 3 tries until I got 4 stars with her to unlock Krauser. And man, do I love Krauser. He only has his crossbow and 3 Flash Grenades, but his crossbow will take out enemies in one hit. Not to mention you’re guaranteed ammo for it. You can also have his arm turn into his arm blade to attack one enemy as long as it’s glowing red, which will take out the bosses automatically (and is definitely useful to the crazy chainsaw guys in Waterworld). The only thing is that you have to get used to aiming with the crossbow and it loads slowly (which you can use flash grenades if you have a group of enemies coming down on you). Next up was HUNK, who was just okay. He only has a TMP and Hand Grenades. He lets you kill enemies fast and stagger crowds, plus TMP ammo drops in high quantities so unless you’re staying in one place and not paying attention, you most likely won’t run out. Not to mention he has a insta-kill melee move. Though, the TMP doesn’t stagger the bosses, especially for Waterworld’s whose chainsaw boss swings erratically as he moves forward. And lastly, Wesker. He comes in with a Semi-auto Rifle, Handgun, Killer7, and a bunch of Grenades. Not to mention his melee attacks are so powerful. He really makes you feel powerful as you’re playing him. However, he doesn’t come with any backup ammo

Of course, these characters are stronger and weaker on certain maps (well, Leon struggles on all anyway). But, if I had to rank the different Mercenaries characters based on my own opinion, I’d say: Krauser > Wesker > HUNK > Ada > Leon

Well, now if I choose to, I’ll be able to use Ashley’s invincibility costume and the weapons unlocks if I choose to replay or torture myself with Professional difficulty. I, for one, am excited to have Ashley in her suit of armor.

Thanks for this review. Tried a bit of the extras and didn’t really want to go through it but was still curious to know what happens there.

Assignment Ada , also known as Ada the Spy in some regions, is a short mission that is unlocked after completing the game once. In this game, Ada Wong must infiltrate the Island Base and recover 5 Plaga Samples. The samples must fit into her small Attache Case along with her Punisher, TMP, and Semi-Auto Rifle, so item management is a must. The game must be beaten in one complete run, as there is no saving. In all versions prior to the Wii version, Ada has no Knife, so the difficulty is even greater. She must fire bullets to break crates and barrels to obtain items so, do not worry about killing every single enemy and proceed to the next area as soon as possible.

  • 1 Storming the Beach
  • 2 Inside the Base
  • 3 The Lone Guard
  • 4 Chicago Typewriter

Storming the Beach [ edit ]

When infiltrating the beach area, be careful about shooting enemies of edges into the water, or else you may run short on ammo. After all the enemies are dead, collect the items around the area. Climb the ladder at the rear entrance and crawl through the vent duct to get inside the Base.

Inside the Base [ edit ]

Once inside check your in-game map. The locations of the Plaga Samples are marked with treasure icons on the map. Find them and kill the enemies guarding them. In the Research Lab, collect the Plaga Sample and then defend yourself from the enemies that lock-down the room. To get out, operate the security console to unlock the door.

The Lone Guard [ edit ]

At the Communications Tower you will have to defeat Krauser to obtain the final Plaga Sample. Use your remaining Hand Grenades and the TMP to defeat him. Once he's taken care of ride the lift to the top of the Tower and call a Chopper to pick up Ada.

Chicago Typewriter [ edit ]

Completing the mission allows you to purchase the Chicago Typewriter , a Tommy Gun with unlimited ammo, in a completed file of the main game (GameCube) or Separate Ways (all other versions). The gun does come with a high price at 1 million Pesetas to be exact in the main game and 300,000 in Separate Ways.

Resident Evil 4 VR Doesn't Have Separate Ways Or Mercenaries

You can play as Leon Kennedy but not Ada Wong in Resident Evil 4 VR.

Resident Evil 4 VR launches tomorrow , taking the classic, revolutionary 2000s shooter into uncharted territory . It's been ported a hefty amount of times now but never overhauled for a new medium entirely. However, in the transition, it has lost Mercenaries and Separate Ways , two of the unlockable extra modes.

Speaking to IGN, the spokesperson revealing the news didn't divulge why the modes were omitted, only that they won't be making an appearance. For context, The Mercenaries was unlocked by completing the Resident Evil 4 on any difficulty - the idea is that you kill as many baddies as possible in as quick a time as you can. Normal enemies award 300 points and bosses award several thousand - in essence, it's an arcade minigame.

RELATED: From Resident Evil To Dead Space: The History Of Survival Horror

Meanwhile, Separate Ways is a story expansion that's also unlocked by beating the main campaign. You play as Ada Wong during the events of the main story, following Albert Wesker's orders to ring the church bell. You then rescue Luis Sera, retrieve the plaga sample, and stop Leon's assassination. It's a side story that runs adjacent to Resident Evil 4, explaining what Ada was up to.

Another absent extra mode is Assignment: Ada, a non-canon minigame that is - you guessed it - unlocked by beating Resident Evil 4. The plot is simple: you, playing as Ada, collect various plaga samples, and report back to Wesker.

During this segment, you report that Krauser is dead despite the main story implying his survival. It's non-canon, though, so this can be hand-waved. However, it does vaguely tease Resident Evil 5 as Wesker talks about "significant changes in our world" that are on the horizon.

While Assignment: Ada remained alongside Separate Ways in future ports, it's clear that elements of A:A inspired the story-based expansion. Nonetheless, neither are available in the VR port. You're stuck with good ol' Leon Kennedy, the emo bad boy with a mean jacket and a decent combat roll technique. Unfortunately, his fringe won't obscure half your view - talk about immersion breaking.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Cut Content Points to a Particular DLC Expansion

Resident Evil 4's remake does not include two optional campaigns from the original, and one of them seems like a shoo-in for post-launch DLC.

Resident Evil 4 is a seminal game, and easily one of the franchise’s most popular entries. Thus, when its remake was officially announced, fans had more stipulations on what they wanted to see faithfully recreated from the original. Resident Evil 4 has a lot more content than Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 , resulting in a lot more content for Capcom to potentially cut in the RE4 remake . It should please fans to hear that nearly all the original game's content has returned, with plenty of attention to detail.

The remake features new content from the original as well, but these additions to gameplay or narrative largely serve to elaborate on key sequences and story beats instead of subsuming them entirely. There is content from the original game that is not currently in the Resident Evil remake, but several signs point to this content being doled out at some point in the future as post-launch DLC. Following the Resident Evil 4 remake’s free post-launch Mercenaries DLC , its main narrative could benefit from DLC adding a playable Ada Wong.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Sees Ada Following in Leon’s Footsteps

Resident Evil 4 ’s Separate Ways and Assignment: Ada campaigns are not presently confirmed for the remake, though it is likely that at least one of these campaigns will become available as either free or purchasable post-launch DLC. If this is not Capcom’s plan, it would seem redundant for the remake to have cutscenes featuring Ada to the extent it currently does.

The point of seeing Ada in cutscenes throughout the original game was later seeing how those events tie into her role during Separate Ways, when players can experience what she was going through directly. This includes some incredible revelatory moments, such as learning that Ada is the person who rings the church bell and saves Leon during the village mob ambush .

The Resident Evil 4 remake already prefaces this side-campaign in the main game’s narrative. Leon literally name-drops "Separate Ways" in his final conversation with Ada before fleeing from the island with Ashley, so it's clear Capcom is still thinking about that content.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Has Huge Post-Launch DLC Potential

This should be all the evidence fans need to presume a Separate Ways DLC expansion should be coming at some point in the near future. However, dataminers have also allegedly found evidence of Separate Ways DLC being in development. This comes from the supposed discovery of a file codenamed "_anotherorder," which is a clear not to the term "The Another Order" being the original name associated with Resident Evil 4 ’s Separate Ways.

Still, without any clear confirmation from Capcom, it is unknown if such a DLC will be part of the remake’s future. Assignment: Ada seems like a more unlikely addition, especially if the Resident Evil 4 remake ’s post-credits sequence is already a deliberate twist on that non-canon campaign’s final cutscene. Otherwise, Capcom might have ideas for how to integrate this mini-game into a brief DLC episode similar to some of the more ephemeral DLC included in Resident Evil 7 .

Resident Evil 4 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
