Abhirami and Samuthirakani in Are You Ok Baby?

Are You Ok Baby review: A film that provokes thought without hitting emotional highs

Are you ok baby (tamil) ( 3.5 / 5).

When Lakshmy Ramakrishnan makes a film, you by now instinctively know it is backed by research – be it Aarohanam, about a mother with bipolar disorder, Nerungi Vaa Muthamidathe, about the petrol crisis, Ammani, about an elderly hospital worker, or House Owner , about an elderly couple caught in the Chennai floods. Are You Ok Baby?, which is about adoption, and stars Samuthirakani, Abhirami, Mullai Arasi, Ashok Kumar, Aadukalam Naren, and others, falls in the same category.

That extensive research might at times get in the way of good storytelling and cast aside the ‘show, don’t tell’ narrative technique, but Lakshmy prefers to tie all the knots, sometimes even indulging in an explanation scene or dialogue (for eg: lactation consultant), helping you skip that Google search. And so, while as an audience, you might not be drawn into the issue with all the depth you ought to be and your heart does not react intensely, you still feel something, and your mind is happy. Because all the boxes are ticked, the issues are given their logical conclusion, and nothing is left to chance.

It helps that Ilaiyaraaja composes the songs and background score. 2023 surely is the year he chose to tell people that he’s going nowhere and that his soundscape is still very much a part of our lives and cinema. ‘Anna Thandhai’ sung by Shweta Mohan, is especially haunting.

Middle-aged Balan (Samuthirakani) and Vidya (a glowing Abhirami) live in Kerala with Balan’s mother (Kalairani) and infant Anya. A call from a reality show host Rashmy Ramakrishnan (played by Lakshmy in a very meta act) turns their life topsy turvy. Shobha (a wonderful Mullai Arasi. Look out for her in the scene where she’s in agony over her child, but is hungry and goes for the food) goes on TV alleging that her daughter has been taken away by the couple. The agencies step in, and what seemed to be a private transaction (illegal though) between a childless couple and a young girl who knows she cannot look after a child with her abusive partner (why Ashok Kumar is yet to get more roles of substance defies me. He’s always usually delivered what is expected of the character),  is suddenly in the limelight.

Lakshmy writes with a certain empathy for all. The CBCID officer Lanka (played by real-life advocate CG Kumar. Disclaimer: I know him from my time in Coimbatore), the child welfare official played by Mysskin who speaks about Kohlberg and Gilligan (law or natural justice), the lawyers (Anupama Kumar being her dignified self), the public prosecutor Udhay Mahesh, each one of them does what their job profile demands, but also thinks of the spirit behind the law, and focusses on also doing right by the child in question.

There’s a scene in the court when Anupama, called Chechi by Balan, says things she usually might not have during the course of the argument, casting aspersions on Shoba’s choices. When the judge pulls her up for it, she’s quick to apologise. But when Vidya tells her that she ought not to speak that way about the real mother, Chechi stops by saying, “Let me do my job.”

Vidhya and Balan think of adoption very late, and the film also speaks of how couples whose combined age is above 90 cannot adopt an infant. And so when a nurse they know helps them find a child through another nurse (Vinodhini Vaidynathan), they fall for it. A word about Vinodhini. She’s possibly among the most self-deprecating actors around, giving herself to every role, however small. She’s suave but manages to totally sell you the role of a nurse who pretends to care. She is tough when it comes to money transfers, plays fan girl when Rashmy calls her, and is the perfect congirl who knows when to take flight.

Many movies and memes have taken potshots at Lakshmy Ramakrishnan for her television stint where she plays judge when people, usually from underprivileged backgrounds, come to her seeking justice. This time around, she decides to bat for herself, writing Rashmy Ramakrishnan as someone who is empathetic, and who takes a stand based on her principles, and pays the price for that. For all the ‘Yenma ippadi paneeteengale maa’ memes, Lakshmy seems to say ‘This is me, take it or leave it’. And this is how these shows are edited and directed (in the film by Pavel Navageethan, who does not hesitate to attack the host using the dialect of her community), and it’s not just me.

Lakshmi’s films are not meant for easy watching. They somehow tap into that grey area where you’re unable to take a call on whether someone is right or wrong. As a result, you watch dispassionately, without letting your emotions get in the way. At no stage does she ever whitewash what Balan and Vidya have done. Yes, their home is the better home for the child, but the route they took to get there — that is definitely grey.

During many of the TV shows Lakshmy hosted, you’d often see women willing to forgive all to be with their abusive partner. Shoba is one such girl — after five abortions and living with and loving a man who refuses to use a condom and who sells their child, she still hopes getting the child will help her get him back. No one sympathises with her, and even the audience at times tends to see her with a word she uses to describe how people react to her — ‘asingam’ (something ugly).

Are You Ok Baby? is that film that does not leave you smiling, because you know that the legal victory was not necessarily a moral one.

Are You Ok Baby Movie Review: Lakshmy Ramakrishnan trains the camera on herself in ‘Are You Ok Baby’, but the meta-commentary struggles to coexist with a story about adoption

Are You Ok Baby Movie Review

Are You Ok Baby Movie Cast & Crew

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan is a one-woman indie-filmmaker industry, and she has made a number of films – Ammani , House Owner – that range from solid to superb. Her latest venture, Are You Ok Baby? , is her most ambitious yet, because it is, in part, a meta-movie. It features a TV show named Sollaadhadhum Unmai . The name of its anchor is Rashmi Ramakrishnan, and her husband is played by the director's real-life husband. The show is bashed as sensation-seeking, TRP-hungry. One person Rashmi phones during the show asks, "Why should I answer your questions? Are you police or judge?" Rashmi is bashed for being a Brahmin. She is bashed for interfering in "poorer people's" lives while wearing silk saris. Her interview quotes are twisted. Even as a cop makes cynical comments about the show, we see a woman claim that she is a big fan. In short, Rashmi, like Lakshmy, is a controversy magnet.

Are You Ok Baby? is structured like one episode of the show, and it portrays both aspects of the programme. We see the people who are putting the episode together (including Rashmi), and the politics inside the show. The director, for instance, cannot stand his star-anchor. And on the other hand, we see the subjects, the people who become part of this episode woven around a young woman who gave up her child for adoption and now wants the little girl back. Abhirami and Samuthirakani play the adoptive parents who are middle-aged, and will not therefore be granted custody of an infant. So they have resorted to slightly shady means to get a baby. Is this a case of child-trafficking? As opposed to this well-adjusted, affluent couple, we get the biological, lower-middle-class parents, who are filled with all the "vices" Rashmi’s show likes to bring up. The man is a drunk. The woman has had multiple abortions. They are living together.  And so forth.

It is really brave of Lakshmy Ramakrishnan to open herself up on screen like this, and to her credit, she does not make Rashmi a victim. But the film never takes off. It is all concept and no execution. The dialogue, the acting, the staging – everything is flat and the whole thing moves along like a clunky mega-serial episode. Director Mysskin shows up as the head of the Child Welfare Committee, and he is too large a personality to play this kind of regular-guy part. But to add to the meta-ness, he spouts some very Mysskin-esque bits of philosophy. Finally, we are left with a film that struggles to balance its meta-commentary with a story about two sets of parents battling it out over a baby. On the one side, the fourth wall is broken. The other side strives to maintain the illusion of invisible storytelling. Despite good intentions, the result is all over the place.

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan as a director is surely remarkable. She has, over and over again proved her worth with outstanding movies like Aarohanam, Ammani, House Owner and now Are you okay baby. This movie has a bit cinematic elements when compared to the rest, but still is totally effective and worthwhile. It binds the audience within the first 5 mins and keeps them hooked until the last minute. Very well done Madam. My respect for her has grown exponentially.

Director Lakshmy Ramakrishnan’s  Are You OK Baby?  is a fairly gripping social drama that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

The film’s plot seems to have been inspired by one of the many cases the director handled while being the anchor of a reality show.

Vidhya (Abhirami) and Balan (Samuthirakani), a couple from Kerala, adopt a baby girl whom they lovingly named Anya.

They start bringing up the child with a lot of love and care. The child, in turn, brings joy and contentment to the couple who have been desperately waiting to turn parents for years together.

Everything is fine for a year. Then, a storm starts to brew in their lives.

One fine day, they get a call from a reality show host (Lakshmy Ramakrishnan) who says that the child’s biological mother, Shoba (Mullai Arasi), has approached them seeking help in reclaiming her child.

The shattered couple explains to the anchor that they got custody of the child with due permission from the biological mother and also points out that it was she who chose to give up the child for adoption after realising that she could not bring it up.

Further, Vidhya and Balan point out that they were the ones who bore the hospital costs of the mother when she was pregnant and the treatment costs of the child when it required medical attention.

They also claim to have paid the father a huge amount for the sake of the child.

However, the fact that they paid money soon turns the case against them, and they are charged with child trafficking. What happens next is what the film is all about.

Throws light on significant aspects.

Are You OK Baby? has some significant points to make as it throws light on a number of issues that are little known to most people.

For instance, it shines a light on how reality shows are conducted. It also depicts how the trauma of individuals and families is exploited by unscrupulous television channels to up their TRP ratings.

More importantly, it highlights how complex the adoption process in India is and how insensitive child adoption laws that are not in touch with ground realities are.

Further, it portrays how many people, who think they have properly adopted a child because they have the permission of the biological mother, find themselves in major problems at a later stage because of not getting the adoption deed ratified in a court of law.

For all of this, the film wins brownie points. However, it is not without its share of problems.

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, even as she looks to tell a significant story, tries to make her role as an anchor appear as a scapegoat in the film.

Are You OK Baby? comfortably shifts all the blame for the problems caused by the reality show on its director and gives the show host a clean chit.

However, the fact remains that such reality shows are nothing but kangaroo courts and that the anchors are as much to be blamed as the directors of such programmes.

Fine performances

The film has some fine performances coming from its lead actors.

Abhirami as Vidhya and Samuthirakani as Balan win your hearts hands down for their strong performances as a couple yearning for a child.

Mysskin, who appears for a while as the head of the Child Welfare Committee, impresses.

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan and Mullai Arasi deliver what is expected of them.

On the technical front, Ilaiyaraaja’s music is a big plus. It ups the intensity of the developments and makes you get involved in the plot.

In all,  Are You OK Baby? is more than just okay. It is, in fact, fine.

'Are You Okay Baby' movie review: A promising film that doesn’t quite hit the mark

Samuthirakani and Abhirami in 'Are You Okay Baby'.

Was introduced to the concept of free will and choice by my psychologist a few years ago. A concept that strongly emphasised the fact that I always have the choice to make my own decisions – unless I am a minor or I genuinely suffer from a mental disorder. I have always begged to differ. The conundrum that free will often brings to the table is whether we, as humans with all senses intact, are ever in control of our actions. The answer lies in a tricky spot between yes and no. We are complicated beings and choice is often mired down by various factors.

In Are You Okay Baby?, Shobha (a terrific Mullai Arasi) is the personification of one such issue. The film starts with a phone call from Rashmy Ramakrishnan (Lakshmy Ramakrishnan) that turns the life of Vidhya (Abhirami) and Balan (Samuthirakani) upside down. The couple, after 15 years of trying to conceive through various options, have found happiness in Anya, their adopted child when Shobha, the biological mother intervenes to bring her child back home.

Following intervention by Rashmy Ramakrishnan’s show Sollaadhadhum Unmai, the issue goes through an investigatory route with the Child Welfare Committee and CB-CID coming on board. Directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan, the film presents itself with a moral dilemma of how situations play an important role in shaping a person’s decisions.

The film takes undue time in showcasing Rashmy’s life as an anchor and her woes in the television industry instead of exploring the legal complexities of the adoption case. In one scene, Shobha’s good-for-nothing husband Tyagi (Ashok Kumar) is called onstage by Rashmy to perform a dance number since he’s an aspiring actor. One would expect that he would make a fool out of himself. Instead, he aces the dance. We also see Rashmy screaming at a private news reporter for twisting a headline that she never said. What purpose do these scenes serve apart from diverting the audience from the real issue? In some ways, it is clear that Lakshmy is using this film as a response to the critics of her own show, Solvadhellam Unmai, which is re-modelled as Sollaadhadhum Unmai in Are You Okay Baby?

If the edit patterns, especially the random jump break the intensity and dilute the effectiveness of the narration, superficial exploration of topics like sex education and live-in relationships are dampeners too. Mysskin and Uday Mahesh’s characters had the potential to be key catalysts to the film, but once again the lack of exploration of these arcs is telling. Although the film places Shobha at the centre of things, the film fails to answer pertinent questions like... What is she like as a person? How deep does the human trafficking racket go in India? How do preconceived notions and stigma hold back parents from adopting? How arduous are these court cases? These unexplored layers end up leaving a lot of these questions unanswered.

But the film does have glimmers of ingenuity and things done right. In the first few scenes, you see the ecstatic parents looking at a breast pump, which has freshly produced milk. For a second, you would wonder why the moment was so special. Then, you understand that they had adopted Anya, and Vidhya was on ‘induced lactation’ to breastfeed the baby. In another scene, when Vidhya misses her child, you can see her breasts leak milk. She looks at the now empty swing where she used to caress the child while feeding and heaves an emotional sigh. All these moments, though small, elevate the film. Ilaiyaraaja’s score and the song Annai Thanthai deftly captures the pain of parents yearning to meet their baby.

You can see the climax coming from a mile away, but it doesn’t really hit you like a ton of bricks. It is more like a soft blow, which hardly leaves an impact. For most of the film, the decisions of Shobha are confounding. Perhaps, that’s a good thing—to seek for questions, rather than answers; to see every human in shades of grey, rather than binaries of black and white. The heart of Are You Okay Baby? is at the right place, but that alone isn’t necessary to translate it into a great story.

Despite its promising story and noble intentions, Are You Okay Baby?, does not always strike the right chord. It is a melancholic melody, for sure, but does it mean all is okay with the film? The answer lies in a tricky spot between yes and no.

Very happy to share the #firstlook of #AreYouokBaby , we need your wishes ❤️ pic.twitter.com/bX7c1gAbrN — Lakshmy Ramakrishnan (@LakshmyRamki) June 28, 2023

Said to be a mix of genres, the film also stars Abhirami, Muruga Ashok, Paval Navaneethan, Robo Shankar, Vinodhini and Lakshmy Ramakrishnan. The film’s music is by Ilaiyaraaja.

In a statement, Lakshmy said, “ Are You Ok Baby is dedicated to the audiences of my talk show. It is a debate on the social and legal aspects of a crime. The film is extensively shot in Chennai and Kerala. The film’s production works happened amidst many challenges, and since it’s a story that has to be told, we decided to proceed and complete it by battling the odds. It’s such a great privilege to be working with the icons of Tamil cinema, who are illustrious for their unparalleled performances. Besides, to have the Midas-touch of Maestro Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja sir is a gift to the entire film. His musical touch will escalate the entire premise to a greater extent. We have completed the shooting, and the postproduction work is happening in full swing.”

Are You Ok Baby Story

Are You Ok Baby, a film that explores the complex themes of motherhood, family, and justice, follows the lives of two couples: a young pair who are struggling to make ends meet and a middle-aged couple who have been unable to conceive a child. When the young woman becomes pregnant, her boyfriend abandons her, leaving her to raise the child alone. The child is eventually adopted by the middle-aged couple, and they raise her as their own. Years later, the young woman learns the truth about her daughter's adoption and files a lawsuit to regain custody. The case goes to court, and the judge ultimately rules in favour of the middle-aged couple. The young woman is devastated, and she turns to a television talk show in a desperate attempt to get justice.
