Halle Bailey at Roger Vivier; a design from the Spring/Summer 2023 collection; Emilia Jones at the show

Celebrities flocked to famed French women’s cobbler Roger Vivier ’s Spring-Summer 2023 presentation on Sept. 29 in the City of Lights. Paris Fashion Week has been in full swing since Monday, back with a sort of vengeance. Every runway seat is filled and every presentation is at capacity, with more than 100 brands showcasing in some capacity on the official calendar.

The new collection represents an ode to Monsieur Vivier who left a brimming legacy when he passed away in 1998. The design team dug into house archives, as show notes stated, to “see and create innovative designs that reinterpret the feeling in contemporary variations.”

During his career, Vivier captured the hearts of the most notable of women. He designed the shoes for Queen Elizabeth 1953 coronation, while stars from Elizabeth Taylor to Anne Hathaway and Katie Holmes have all been spotted in Roger Vivier.

“Roger Vivier was an inventor who changed fashion and the history of accessories. My job is to highlight the maison’s legendary values and his visionary creativity. ‘What would Roger Vivier do?’ In today’s fast-paced digital world, it felt like the right moment to remark on Roger Vivier’s singular impact and own the house signature codes,” shared creative director Gherardo Felloni in notes.

Celebrity attendees included members of the cast of Netflix’s  Emily in Paris , including Ashley Park, Camille Razat, and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, who recently finished filming season 3 of the show.

Singer Halle Bailey and her boyfriend, rapper DDG were spotted, as were Kiernan Shipka, Emilia Jones , models Joan Smalls and Coco Rocha, India Amarteifio (Sex Education) and Maye Musk.

Upstairs, artisans were at work showing how a Roger Vivier shoe is made. One assembled pastel-colored fabric onto a shoe. In another room, where black-and-white films were unspooling on the wall, another artisan sat putting colorful gemstones on a cubed heel. Elsewhere, guests were guided into a room that looked more like a tunnel, where the walls were covered in large flowers, and handbags from the collection were on display.

The Virgule Flowers Bow Sling Back shoe and the Viv’ Choc Flowers Bag are highlights from the new collection. The former is a recreation of an original created by Vivier in 1963, now done in an electric acid yellow with matching mesh.

The Paris Fashion Week Schedule Is Out—See Who’s On and Off the Calendar Here

The Paris Fashion Week Schedule Is Out—See the Debuts and the Names That Are Missing Here

The Paris Fashion Week schedule is out today and with it, fashion week plans can finally be fully realized. Though for the most part the schedule is very much business as usual, there are a few surprises. On Wednesday , September 27, Marni , the Italian label helmed by Francesco Risso, will be making a stop in the City of Light as part of its global world tour—the last two seasons Risso put on shows in Tokyo and New York City.

Also bringing energy to the Paris calendar is Louise Trotter, who recently stepped into the creative director role at Carven after leaving Lacoste.  Her show is scheduled for Saturday, September 30. That evening,   Stefano Gallici will be launching his new vision for Ann Demeulemeester —the second debut in as many seasons after Ludovic de Saint Sernin exited after his fall 2023 collection. Meanwhile, at Lanvin , the rapper Future will be presenting his guest-capsule for the house in a day-long presentation on Thursday, September 28. The label parted ways with former creative director Bruno Sialleli earlier this year and will reportedly bring in guest designers for main collections going forward. Thursday will also see the launch of Rabanne , the new identity for the label formerly known as Paco Rabanne.

On Tuesday, September 26, Peter Do , recently named the creative director at Helmut Lang , will be showing his namesake label after taking a break last season; and on Sunday, October 1, Casablanca , the nearly-five year old label by Charaf Tajer, will be showing on the womenswear calendar for the first time. Up until now, Tajer has presented his luxe co-ed vision on the menswear schedule. Then, on Monday, October 2, Casey Cadwallader, fresh from his H&M collaboration , will bring Mugler back to the runway, followed by John Galliano’s Maison Margiela .  It will be Margiela’s first show on the ready-to-wear calendar since spring 2022.

Notably absent from the schedule is Ib Kamara ’s Off-White , which is taking a break this season and will return in February; and Rochas , which has yet to name a new designer after the departure of Charles de Vilmorin . Read through to learn about the full schedule—and check back for our coverage on the Vogue Runway App in late September.

Roger Vivier’s Gherardo Felloni Rethinks the Modern Slingback for Spring ’24

Nostalgia runs rampant in fashion these days, but Gherardo Felloni doesn’t seem to mind. Nor does he place Roger Vivier in the same category as other names doing it — despite the French heritage brand’s vast archives and reliance on them.

“There is before Roger Vivier, where shoes were without shape or decoration, and then there is after Roger Vivier,” the creative director said at the brand’s spring ‘24 Paris Fashion Week presentation on Thursday. “He changed the approach. He was an architect, and he was working on this strange heel that was impossible before. That’s why they are contemporary in a way.”

Selena gomez, meryl streep, and david henrie's shoes turn heads at the "only murders in the building" season four premiere, lady gaga duets with bruno mars in roger vivier pumps for 'die with a smile' music video.

Felloni has been pulling style references from Vivier’s vast archives ever since he came to the brand in 2018. But the designer might have fully hit his stride this season with the reintroduction of the Viv’ Canard, a slingback named for its duckbill shape that comes from the 1960s.

“I decided to make it longer – but not too much,” he said. “Every time I take a last from the archives, I take a lot of attention to not ruin it, to not push it too far. If not, it becomes too seasonal, and I don’t like it. I like the idea that you buy shoes for the rest of your life. That’s the challenge.”

The designer said he sees a diluted market when it comes to trends, and an inevitable realignment needed following the pandemic. “Balance is coming back,” he declared.

While he admitted there are palpable Y2K vibes from the heel (slingback strap, cutout on the vamp and tiny buckle detailing in addition to the elongated toe, which tapers off into a narrow square), Felloni also pointed out the inevitability of the fashion cycle. “We consider it a little bit 2000s, but I was there in the 2000s, and 2000s was inspired by Vivier, in the ‘50s.”

The Canard archival heel joins the remainder of the spring ‘24 collection, which was divided up into four different pillars of the brand, or “Les Éléments Vivier.” Felloni worked with Italian set designer and La Scala veteran Leila Maria Fteita to transform a hôtel particulier (just next door to its usual Paris Fashion Week location) into four distinct areas.

Kevin Tachman for Roger Vivier SS24

The first Vivier pillar was color, which Felloni illustrated through a Monet-inspired section that focused on hues found in flowers and nature — color blocked patent leather slingbacks in brights and pastels alike, but also a series of tie-dyed heels and ruched Viv’ Choc bags and raffia slides, bags and hats.

The second was passion, which was translated quite literally into hearts, or the brand’s “I Love Vivier” decolleté heels. Felloni did them in a variety of new ways, from fully crystalized pumps to satin thong sandals outfitted with 3D heart-shaped crystal bows, plus a series of lattice work suede decolleté styles that included a flat (sure to live well in the ballerina story for spring ‘24).

Kevin Tachman for Roger Vivier SS24

Lightness was Felloni’s third pillar of the Vivier spring story, where a gigantic version of the Viv Canard pump (complete with a leather insoled seat) was on display next to the actual shoe, along with stacked heels (outfitted with a buckle detail on the bottom), puffy, ruched leather bags in Easter egg colors and retro enamel stacked bangles.

Finally, the fourth focus was on preciousness, a segment that allowed the brand to showcase its usual savoir-faire in embellishments. Hanging from a giant chandelier in the presentation space, crystal mules and sequined Mary Janes sparkled next to evening versions of the Canard in satin and crystal buckles.

Here, Felloni also included scaled-down versions of the one-of-a-kind bags from Vivier’s Viv Choc couture collection shown in July; pastel tweeds were decorated with crystal cut in briolettes and round brilliants (no precious materials used this time). The designer continues to add jewelry to the collection, too; this time he took inspiration from his own private collection for pieces in resin and crystal.

The presentation was full of its usual buzz and boldface names, with plenty of foot traffic shuffling up and down the stairs and out back to eat ice cream in the unseasonably warm Paris weather. But this time around, appearances from Cher, Laura Dern, Michelle Yeoh and Carla Bruni, in addition to the ingénues making the usual rounds, was a reminder of Vivier’s weight in the game.

Paris Fashion Week returns to physical shows with The Row, Vtmnts

Undeterred by the Omicron surge, Paris Fashion Week will return as a full-fledged physical event in a sign that changes to fashion week in response to Covid-19 were largely temporary.

Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Off-White, Stella McCartney, Miu Miu, Chloe, Givenchy, Valentino, Balmain, Vivienne Westwood and The Row are among the 45 houses set to host an in-person runway show during the event, which runs from 28 February until March 8, the French Federation announced on Monday. One change that has held on from Covid- 19 is a broader adoption of livestreaming: All of the above will also have livestream components. This season, 95 houses are listed on the official calendar. In addition to the 45 physical shows, there will be 37 physical presentations and 13 digital-only events. “Formats will depend on the evolution of the health situation and measures taken by public authorities,” the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode said in a statement.

The season will see notable returns and debuts. It will mark the first Off-White show since the brand’s founder Virgil Abloh died last November. The Row, the label by Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen founded in 2006, will show on 2 March at 11:30am local time. The label last showed in Paris in 2016 during the Spring/Summer season in a château outside the city. Vtmnts, a Vetements offshoot brand launched in 2021, will show for the first time with Guram Gvasalia as creative director . Balenciaga will return to the more traditional runway show format. Last season, its show consisted of two parts: a red-carpet turned show and a Simpsons collaboration short film.

The pandemic forced the industry to reconsider the fashion show formula, with some brands dropping out and others hosting digital shows, presentations and out-of-the-box formulas. This season suggests, despite some livestreaming opportunities to reach more consumers, most are back to in-real life events within the official calendars, though LVMH-owned Celine is a notable exception with Hedi Slimane’s collection still off the Paris schedule. Men’s week in January was subdued, but couture week was full with physical shows , and with the sanitary situation improving (new daily cases of Covid-19 were around 155,439 on 6 February, down from over 500,000 late January) the Federation is betting demand is back. The Chinese buyers and press will still be away, held off by Covid travel restrictions, but the Americans are again travelling. “It shows the power of physical shows: we have learned how digital enhances the physical. Digital only is less impactful,” says PR guru Lucien Pagès. “We hope for a return to a certain normalcy, like during fashion week last September before Omicron hit. In fact, we are also working on many possible projects for cocktail events and maybe parties depending on sanitary rules.”

In New York, physical runway shows, presentations and appointments are back for those choosing to show. Coach, Tory Burch, Gabriella Hearst and Khaite are hosting physical shows, while Michael Kors is putting on an in-person show and livestreaming it as well. Tom Ford is out, as well as Marc Jacobs. In London, brands are largely returning to physical fashion shows, too, with brands like Simone Rocha and Ahluwalia offering a catwalk collection and simultaneous digital offering, while a handful are sticking to digital like Emilia Wickstead and Di Petsa. Burberry and Victoria Beckham, however, will be absent. Milan Fashion Week’s calendar includes runway shows of Bottega Veneta, Fendi, Dolce & Gabbana, Versace and Prada.

Clarification: Updates fourth paragraph to include Celine as a notable exception in the Paris Fashion Week schedule. (Feb 8)

10 Big Questions About Fashion Week, Answered

presentation paris fashion week

If you weren’t extremely online over the past year, it was possible to think that fashion week had all but disappeared in the wake of the pandemic. Instead, it migrated online for a series of digital shows—some genius, some merely okay. Now, fashion week is back in full... ish force, with a mix of live (“physical”) shows and streaming (digital...remote...cinematic?) presentations. Still, it’s not quite the globetrotting series of events that defined the month of June in pre-pandemic times. Here, we demystify the events to come.

Fashion week? Again?

You bet! After the pandemic upended the usual schedule last summer, men’s week is sliding roughly back to its traditional calendar, with the Spring 2022 shows beginning in mid-June and running through early July.

What’s the order of events?

First up is London Fashion Week, which begins Saturday, June 12th, and runs through Monday, June 14th. This includes men’s and womenswear, and you can see the schedule here .

Next is Pitti Uomo, the Florence-based trade show, which will be held from Tuesday, June 15th to Thursday the 17th.

Then comes Milan Fashion Week, from Friday, June 18th to Tuesday, June 22nd. See the calendar here .

Lastly, we have Paris Fashion Week. Things kick off Tuesday, June 22nd and wrap up on Sunday the 27th. The calendar is live on the official FHCM site .

And does the uptick in vaccinations in the United States and Europe mean this is happening IRL?

Sort of. Pitti Uomo, the Italian trade show famous for its wildly-dressed “peacock” attendees, has continually stated its intention to return to an in-person run of events—fashion, after all, represents a huge share of Italy’s economy, and buying through digital platforms, as advanced as they’ve become in the past year, has been difficult. (One imagines that’s especially true for the kinds of goods—umbrellas, pocket squares, driving loafers—shown at Pitti.) A handful of Americans, specifically those who work in the tailoring business, have confirmed their in-person attendance.

Meanwhile, in London, Milan, and Paris, there will be a mix of digital and physical events, with designers striking a balance between a desire to drum up national fashion pride and respect the travel restrictions still in place for various countries. In Milan, for example, Giorgio Armani, who was one of the first to pivot to a digital presentation amid the global outbreak of coronavirus in March 2020, was early to announce his return to a physical show , to take place on Monday, June 21st. “During these months I realized that fashion cannot survive long in an exclusively virtual form,” he told Vogue last month. “I believe there will be a return to physical shows, turned into digital experiences for the global audience.” He suggested that shows moving forward would become more intimate, and perhaps more carefully curated or considered—a trend that will likely continue as the vaccination efforts, which have moved more slowly in Europe than the US, continue. Dolce & Gabbana (Saturday, June 19th) and Etro (Sunday, June 20th) are also showing in person.

In Paris, it’s yet unclear who has committed to an in-person show. For what it’s worth, longtime Paris fixture Yohji Yamamoto has been vocal about his distaste for digital presentations.

All that being said, your trusted GQ squad will remain in the United States for the time being, so we’ll be taking things in just as many of you will be—digitally.

So who should I pay attention to?

Good question! In London, all eyes—or mine, at least—will be on Ahluwalia, a recipient of the 2020 LVMH Prize known for her tech-y upcycling, as well as the great Nicholas Daley, for his karate-inflected tweeds.

In Milan, Armani has positioned the return of in-person events as a show of the city’s fashion strength—it’s the town where the drapey tailoring everyone’s hankering for this summer was invented, after all! Armani seems to have spent the past year deep in contemplation about fashion’s meaning and purpose in this frenetic world; let’s see how all that thinking impacts his continued beige agenda. Plus: Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons second menswear collection—their first Spring collection as co-creative directors—will debut on Sunday, June 20th. That’s a must-see.

Milan is historically the capital of menswear, but Paris continues to be where the trendiest bigwigs show—Dior, Louis Vuitton, Loewe, Dries Van Noten, and Rick Owens will all put out new collections then. Will they strike a newly hopeful tone, as designers increasingly imagine a “post-pandemic world”? Or will they turn to something gnarlier, as Owens did in his collection last January? Will personal style and dress-up continue to be a key element for menswear, which is pushing men more and more to experiment with feminine cuts and silhouettes like skirts? (One more name to watch: Parisian brand Casablanca continues to build buzz— designer Charaf Tajer just snagged a nomination for the ANDAM Prize and was named a Woolmark Prize finalist .)

Anything else I should look out for?

It’s been awhile since designers were able to pull out all the stops—like when Kim Jones got Drake to make a new song just for his Spring 2018 Louis Vuitton collection, or Virgil Abloh put the Migos in his front row , or Rick Owens played Zebra Katz’s “Ima Read” on repeat for the entirety of his show, or Frank Ocean ran around Paris with a big Old Celine shopper tote. It’s not even about the spectacle, but the sighting . As the industry attempts to go back to “normal,” expect that brands will attempt to drum up some of these moments with celebrity attendees or monster soundtracks.

And what’s happening at Pitti Uomo? Any fancy guest designers?

South African designer Thebe Magugu will be the fair’s guest designer, following in the footsteps of Telfar , Givenchy (under Clare Waight Keller) , and Sterling Ruby .

Wait, what about Gucci? And Balenciaga? And Celine?

Way back at the beginning of the pandemic, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Saint Laurent stated their intention to show on their own schedule, off the established trade association calendars. It bears noting that both are owned by the luxury conglomerate Kering, which has positioned itself as the experimental maverick to LVMH’s unstoppable behemoth. ( Gucci “hacked” its sibling brand Balenciaga back in April, for example .) This was in response to the carousel of off-season collections that turned the industry into a morass of “It’s always fashion week somewhere.” They wanted to create less and with more intention—and for the most part, these scaled back schedules have resulted in incredibly focused, sophisticated collections.

Kit Harington Is Ready to Shake Up Industry

So, to answer the question: Balenciaga staged its Spring 2022 show this past weekend. (There’s also a couture show coming from the house, their first since Cristobal himself was designing the brand, in July, in Paris.) Gucci, meanwhile, will wait until November to show in person—in Los Angeles .

Celine, which is part of LVMH, is also working on its own schedule. The brand’s last men’s collection, the rollicking medieval e-boy paean Teen Knight Poem , debuted in February, shortly after most of the other men’s collections, while the Spring 2021 collection, The Dancing Kid, was shown late in the summer. The safe bet this go-round is some time in August (which means if you start choreographing your viral video now, you could be the lucky recipient of a TikTok-to-runway homage).

And what about, like, the entire United States? Are we still doing New York Fashion Week?

We are...sort of. You’ll have to wait until September for men’s energy in New York, but boy, is it coming: Telfar, Pyer Moss, and Thom Browne will all be presenting collections around then, when the Met Gala is staging a comeback, too .

Is there an unexpected fashion capital?

I’m so glad you asked: Venice! Rick Owens has staged his last few shows there, and now a few other brands are joining him. First is Saint Laurent, whose collection will debut on July 14th in conjunction with the Biennale of Architecture, featuring a large-scale installation by artist Doug Aitken. The next day, Valentino will show its couture collection in the city—and judging from designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s last couture collection, which featured a well-received menswear offering, we’ll see some more high-end men’s goods there, too. (It also probably means that everyone is going to wear those cool little Venetian slippers this summer, too.)

The million dollar question: will there be street style?

Street style appears to be inching back: here’s a Vogue slideshow of looks from Australian Fashion Week, for example, which has happened mostly in-person thanks to that country’s admirable handling of the virus. But I’m betting what we do see this season won’t look the same: over the past year, I’ve clocked consumers growing more skeptical of big trends (if not big brands), and doubling down on individuality over grails.

What’s the point of all of this, again?

For something so glamorous, fashion week has a pretty utilitarian purpose: designers debut their collections six to eight months in advance of when they appear in stores, giving buyers the time to put together their slate of product for the season, and manufacturers time to make the clothes. Of course, this also gives fast-fashion brands time to knock things off, and fashion media ample time to encourage a global conspiracy of trends that seems oddly prophetic when, say, five-inch inseam shorts suddenly arrive in every brand’s store. Glad to be back!

Paris Fashion Week to return - this time with public shows

After the Fashion Weeks in New York, London and Milan, it is now the turn of Paris. The French capital will host around 30 ‘physical’ fashion parades next week marking a departure from the largely virtual shows held during lockdown.

“All the big fashions houses will be there, with a few exceptions. There will be new brands. We can feel the appetite for physical [in-person] shows,” said Pascal Morand, president of the Haute Couture and Fashion Federation.

Out of 97 shows organised on the official calendar, around one third will invite the public. Attendants must carry a health pass.

Saint Laurent was the first major fashion house to drop out of international fashion weeks during the Covid crisis. Next week, it will be among the most notable returnees.

Paris Fashion Week

Dior, Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton have all organised physical shows.

Givenchy have also organised a catwalk. Its artistic director, Matthew Williams, promises to bring a touch of ‘street style’ to the traditionally aristocratic French brand by adorning outfits in chains and padlocks.

The Balenciaga house, which dressed Kim Kardashian in a full black outfit for the Met Gala in New York has also organised a physical show.

Virtual shows still à la mode

French designer Marine Serre is organising a virtual catwalk, as is the Dries Van Noten. During the lockdown, both designers launched a manifesto, supported by hundreds of small fashion houses, in support of ‘ecological fashion’.

“We will keep this duality of physical and virtual shows forever. The digital aspect is not just a passing phase. It enriches fashion week,” said Pascal Morand.

Many fashion houses are tapping into the digital sphere. Balenciaga has recently announced a partnership with the video game Fortnite . Within the game itself, players can buy ‘virtual’ outfits and a limited range of real goods.

A tribute to Alber Elbaz

There are a number of notable absentees: Celine, whose lead designer Hedi Slimane has described Fashion Weeks as “obsolete”; Stella McCartney; and the luxury giant LVMH.

“They are very few in number. It corresponds to their very particular wishes,” said Pascal Morand.

A catwalk in trinute to the Israeli-American designer Alber Elbaz who was the artistic director of Lanvin has also organised as the closing show of Fashion Week.  Elbaz died from Covid in April.

More than 40 fashion houses have collaborated with the AZ Factory design studio (Elbaz’s final project), to create looks inspired by his work.

Museum to host events

From September 30th, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (MAD) will host an exhibition dedicated to the creative genius of Thierry Mugler - pioneer of the catwalk.

According the the MAD director, the return of physical shows gives the exhibition a heightened significance.

Fashion Week

“We all love listening to music on the radio, watching a film on a computer, or seeing fashion online. But the true emotion comes when we have direct contact with creativity,” he said.

Jean Paul Gaultier, who hung up his scissors in 2020, has organised an exhibition at the Cimémathèque Française, where he will display outfits from films that have shaped the world of fashion. It opens on October 6th.

The Palais Galliera, a museum of Parisian fashion, is organising a celebration of the 100th anniversary of Vogue Paris, from October 2nd.
