What is the difference? • A, E, I, O ,U, and sometimes Y • Open sound • Usually found in the middle of words • We are what? • Some examples are B,C,F,G,D,Z… • Closed sound • There will be more than one in a word in most cases. • We are what?
Back to What’s the difference What's Next? We are vowels!!
Back to What’s the difference? What's Next? We are consonants!!
Long and Short Vowels…You’ll have to sound them out! • A- apple • E- egg • I-igloo • O- office • U- under • Y- yellow • Am I short or long? • A- ape • E- need • I- lie • O- code • U- use • Y is not included • Am I short or long?
Were you right? What’s next? I’m Long!
Were you right? What’s next? I’m a short vowel sound!
Now that we have the basic idea of vowels and consonants…Let’s test our skills! • Read each word aloud on the next page to determine which parts of the word are vowels and which are consonants. • Then decide which words have long vowels and which words have short vowels. • We will now do this as a class!
Let the fun begin! • Badge Fly • Song Puppy • leap jump • Fact zoom • Paddle kite • We worm • Right dance • Zip ready
Some of those were tricky! Why? • Let’s learn some rules that can teach us why certain words sound and look the way they do. • Why are some vowels harder to determine if they are long or short? • Some vowels are easy to determine because they are in the beginning of words, but others have tricky rules that make them harder to notice.
Rules about long vowels • When two vowels are together such as a double o(oo), the long vowel sound u is used. This can also be used with (ee) to make the long vowel e sound and so on. • Another rule with long vowel sounds is in most cases when there is an e at the end of a word the vowel in the middle of the word will have a long vowel sound.
More long vowels… • You also use the long vowel sound when using words with (ea) to make the long e sound or the long a sound depending on the word. In this case you may have to look at the word as a whole to determine which long vowel sound is being used. • You might also see the use of gh to represent any long vowel sound when it is placed after a vowel. Ex)fight • Finally the use of (ai ) represents the long a vowel sound.
Let’s see if we can recognize which long vowel sound is being used… • Lean • Page • Paid • Made • Fright • Bake • Lay
Are you a vowel and consonant expert? Now…Let’s test how much you’ve learned…

Vowel Sounds Game – PowerPoint
This free vowel sounds game is designed to give your kindergarten students practice with identifying middle vowel sounds.
You can download this free Vowel Sounds game presented as a PowerPoint by clicking on the bold link at the bottom of this post.
This interactive vowel sounds game focuses on middle vowel sounds in simple words. Since lots of teachers are moving towards classrooms with less paper, these types of resources for computer centers or even whole class participation is a great alternative.
Set up this vowel sounds game on your student computers for morning practice or during literacy centers.
One idea to use this with your whole class is to give your students small white boards and dry erase markers. Display a slide with picture and letter options, give students time to say the word to themselves and write a letter on their dry erase boards to match the vowel sounds they hear. Then begin clicking on answers one by one. Students can self check and get excited as they see that their answers match the correct answers on the PowerPoint presentation.
This game focuses on middle vowel sounds in words. Students look at a picture, think of or say the word aloud and choose the vowel that they hear in the word. Correct answers are praised with a smiley face slide. A click on the words takes the user to the next slide.
Incorrect responses take users to a “Try again.” slide. Clicking on those words will take them back to the original picture to try again.
**IMPORTANT NOTE: In order for the slides to transition correctly, you (or the students) MUST click on the underlined words on the slide as they are the parts that are hyperlinked to the correct answer slide/next slide. Any clicks outside the words will move them to the following slide in the presentation, which may or may not be correct.
To play independently, students need to click on the word “HERE” on the first slide where it says “Click Here to Start”. This will take them to the Directions slide, which will most likely need to be read to them. Keep this fact in mind for independent practice and also remind them of the important note above. You may want to discuss directions and show the class what to do before sending them to their centers.
The game is created so that the final slide is linked to return to the first slide.
You can download this vowel sounds game here:

English - Class 1
Topic outline
Vowels and consonants.
An alphabet is made up of letters. The letters are arranged in a fixed order. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. All of the words are created using letters.
The Alphabets can be written both in Capital Letters and in Small Letters. These can be classified into Vowels and Consonants.
Vowels: a, e, i, o, u (5 letters).
Vowels are pronounced with mouth open.
Example: When we pronounce "e", our mouth, tongue, teeth, and lips did not move.
Consonants: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, and z (21 letters).
Consonant are pronounced by moving part of the mouth i.e. lips, tongue, or teeth.
Example: When we pronounce “b”, we briefly close our lips.
Note: Vowels and consonants work together to help us pronounce written words. Each letter makes at least one sound. Learning the sound of each letter help us speak out words.
