Doktoratsstudierende können optional der Vienna Doctoral School (VDP) beitreten. Die VDP formiert und berät aktuelle und angehende Doktorand*innen und bietet ihren Mitgliedern verschiedene Formen der finanziellen Unterstützung für die Teilnahme an Konferenzen, die Organisation wissenschaftlicher Veranstaltungen, externe Forschungsaufenthalte und die Erstellung von Dissertationen.

Für Doktoratsstudierende der Philosophie in Geistes und Kulturwissenschaften ist die  Studienprogrammleitung 43  zuständig. Die  Webseite des DoktorandInnenzentrums  bietet als zentrale Anlaufstelle umfangreiche Beratung sowie regelmäßig stattfindende Infoveranstaltungen zum Doktorat an. Eine Reihe von Workshops, Aktivitäten und Veranstaltungen bieten Doktorand*innen die Möglichkeit für Trainings in Schlüsselkompetenzen sowie einen Raum für Austausch und Vernetzung mit Kolleg*innen.

Max Kölbel is a philosopher who works at the Philosophy Department of the University of Vienna. He is in charge of the research area “Analytic Philosophy with special emphasis on Philosophy of Language”. His main interests are in philosophy of language, metaphysics, epistemology and metaethics.

However, since Okt 2022, he has been Director of Studies (SPL 18) and thereby academically responsible for all the philosophy degree programmes except the doctoral programme. He also directs the FWF doc.funds project PACE and has been actively supporting the Vienna Doctoral School in Philosophy since its inception in 2020. He is on the board of Directors of the FWF Cluster of Excellence project “Knowledge in Crisis” .

His collaborators in the area “Analytic Philosophy … ” are: Dirk Kindermann (postdoc), Sandrine Klot (organization assistant), Naomi Osorio-Kupferblum (Herta-Firnberg-Postdoc), Indrek Reiland (Postdoc/ Lise-Meitner Postdoc), Eve Kitsik (FWF ESPRIT Postdoc) and Michael Stöger (teaching assistant). Triinu Eesmaa is a PhD-student who is about to submit her thesis, Hanna Pillin is a PhD-student from LMU Munich, currently visiting Dir Kindermann and our group. Our teaching is also supported by tutors Michael Stöger, Gabriel Levc, Mirela Koleva, Sarah Neuwirth, Lena Golker, Kristina Bogdan and Yara Katnik.

Max Kölbel supervises the PhD-research of Triinu Eesmaa (on felicitous underspecification), Tom Fery (on epistemic norms, jointly with H-B Schmid), Felix Danowski (on the epistemology of moral judgement, jointly with Esther Heinrich-Ramharther), and Mariia Fedorova (jointly with Anne Sophie Meincke).

The group meets irregularly to discuss ongoing research in philosophy of language. Jointly with colleagues at the CEU philosophy dept and the chair of theoretical philosophy, the group has also initiated, and continues to organise, the meetings of the VLM group , which is part of the PLM-Network. The research area also initiated the visiting speaker series WKAP, and has continued until recently to organise it conjointly with several colleagues. A new visiting speaker series in conjunction with the VDP and the new Cluster of Excellence project is being planned.

Max Kölbel holds PhD in Philosophy from King’s College London (1997). He has worked at the Instituto de Investigaciones Filosóficas of the UNAM in Mexico City, at the University of Wales Swansea, the Philosophy Faculty at the University of Cambridge and at the Philosophy Department of the University of Birmingham (2001–9). Between 2008 and 2017 Max was ICREA Research Professor at the University of Barcelona and Senior Member of the Logos Research Group. There he was involved in developing the a postgraduate programme in analytic philosophy, and also in several different research projects, e.g. “Semantic Content and Context Dependence”, “Semantic Content and Conversational Dynamics” and “Foundations and Methods of Natural Language Semantics”. He continues to be a collaborator of Logos. From 2020 to 2023 he was member of the FWF board (“Kuratorium”) and reporter for philosophy/theology and cultural sciences.

Max Kölbel lehrt und forscht seit September 2017 am Institut für Philosophie der Universität Wien. Er leitet dort den Forschungsbereich “Analytische Philosophie mit besonderer Berücksichtigung der Sprachphilosophie”. Seine Hauptinteressen liegen auf den Gebieten Sprachphilosophie, Erkenntnistheorie, Metaphysik und Metaethik.

Seit Oktober 2022 ist er allerdings als Studienprogrammleiter der SPL 18 für alle Studienprogramme in Philosophie außer dem Doktorat verantwortlich. Der Forschungsbereich “Analytische Philosophie” trifft sich unregelmäßig zu einem philosophy of language research colloquium. Gemeinsam mit KollegInnen des CEU philosophy departments und der Professur für theoretische Philosophie organisieren wir auch, die Treffen der VLM group , die Teil des PLM-Networks ist. The master’s programme in Philosophy enables students to deepen their systematic and historical knowledge and develop competences in philosophy that go beyond the knowledge and competences acquired during the bachelor’s programme. The master’s programme covers a wide range of subject areas, allowing students to focus on the great variety of systematic questions and philosophical traditions investigated at the Department of Philosophy. At the same time, the wide range of courses provides students with the opportunity to specialise in certain subject areas and develop a distinctive professional profile. In addition, they have the chance to explore other disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences and arts, as well as other areas of society and culture. Schwerpunkte der PhD Programme

Unser Forschungsfokus liegt auf fünf Kernbereichen: Immunologie, Krebsforschung und Onkologie, Neurowissenschaften, kardiovaskuläre Medizin und medizinische Bildgebung, wobei wir großen Wert auf interdiszipläre Forschungsarbeit bei unseren Projekten legen. Es ist daher für uns ganz natürlich, dass Mediziner: innen mit Forscher: innen, aus anderen Fachbereichen wie der Physik, Chemie oder Mathematik, zusammen an gemeinsamen Lösungen in den Forschungsprojekten arbeiten. Unsere Doktoratsstudien sind in Form von thematisch Programmen gebündelt und bieten eine große Bandbreite von interdisziplinären Forschungsprojekten zur Auswahl an. Unsere Forscher: innen und Forschungsgruppen sind so Vielseitig wie unsere Forschung und dass macht unsere Arbeit so extrem spannend.

Wir begleiten Sie bei Ihren ersten Schritten als junge Forscher: in und unterstützen Sie bei der Entwicklung Ihres eigenständigen Projekts. Das PhD Studium ist praxisorientiert, da Sie die meisten Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse im Rahmen Ihrer wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit im Team erlernen. Nach einer erfolgreich abgeschlossenen Ausbildung entspricht folgende Beschreibung Ihren Profil:

• das systematische Verständnis eines Forschungsbereichs, die Existenz dazugehöriger Kompetenzen und die Anwendung damit verbundener Methoden
• die Fähigkeit, ein Forschungsprojekt nach wissenschaftlicher Integrität zu planen, zu entwickeln, zu verwirklichen und anzupassen

Ablauf der PhD Programme

Das Doktoratsstudium dauert mindestens sechs Semester und umfasst 180 ECTS. Alle Kurse machen insgesamt 30 Semesterstunden aus, das entspricht 16,7% der gesamten Studiendauer (Richtwert ist eine 40-Stunden Woche). Die übrige Zeit (83,3%) steht der Ausarbeitung des Projekts im Zuge der Doktorarbeit zur Verfügung.

Das Doktoratsstudium vermittelt eine umfassende Ausbildung in den Bereichen des jeweiligen Doktorarbeitsthemas. Die Ausbildung setzt sich aus Training am Arbeitsplatz, Kursen, wie Vorlesungen, Seminaren, Journals Clubs, Propädeutika und Doktorarbeitsseminaren oder auch Studienaufenthalten im Ausland zusammen. Während der gesamten Zeit arbeiten Sie mit Ihrer Supervisor: in und dem gesamten Forschungsteam zusammen. 

Ab Mitte des Studiums erarbeiten Sie ein eigenständig Forschungsprojekt, welches in einer Doktoratsarbeit dokumentiert und öffentlich verteidigt wird. Genauere Informationen zum Lehrplan und einen Planungsvorschlag für Ihr Studium haben wir  hier  für Sie zusammen gestellt.

Doctor of Philosophy/PhD

Doctoral studies at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna serve to deepen candidates' understanding of history and theory, and support them in carrying out experimental research in art history and cultural studies, or of the respective social contexts of the artistic/cultural field involved.

For admission, a Master's or similar degree ( Diplomstudium ) in the fields of the humanities, cultural studies, fine arts, or Secondary School TeacherAccreditation in a relevant school subject is prerequisite. This PhD program comprises 6 semesters (which is equal to 180 ECTS credits). One year after admission at the latest, a Thesis Agreement ( Dissertationsvereinbarung ) has to be concluded, specifying the main parameters of the supervision process.

In the course of the doctoral program, students must complete at least 20 ECTS credits. At least four courses are to be completed in the form of 2 dissertation seminars (3 ECTS points each) and 2 private dissertations (2 ECTS points each). The remaining courses (amounting to 10 ECTS points) must be freely chosen from the range of courses offered by the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or another domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution and must be related to the content of the dissertation or complement the study program in a meaningful way. The freely selectable courses are to be recorded in the dissertation agreement.

The VDP organizes an annual summer school as part of the University of Vienna's program of summer schools .

In line with the University of Vienna 2028 Development Plan , our summer schools have two overarching goals:

• The first goal is to enhance the research and career development of early stage researchers . Our summer schools address important and emerging research topics and promote the exchange of ideas at an advanced level. We are committed to diversity in participation and promote a plurality of different philosophical traditions, methods, and forms of thought. Short Description

In the PhD Programme N094 at the Medical University of Vienna, junior researchers can further develop their competence in producing independent scientific work. The programme puts special emphasis on the interdisciplinarity of the dissertation topic.

In interdisciplinary thematic programmes, university staff from individual organisational divisions or departments offer a high-quality training programme in their various fields. During the programme, the candidates produce a dissertation and complete accompanying courses. The courses and the dissertation are assigned to the thematic programmes.

The topic of the dissertation must be aligned with one of the available thematic programmes. Courses offered by another thematic programme can also be taken if they fit into the scientific context of the dissertation project.

We recommend that you contact the programme coordinator of the thematic programme that is of interest to you, before starting the admissions process to the PhD programme, in order to receive more detailed information on the thematic programme.

Prerequisites

• degree in medicine or dentistry or
• Master’s degree in a scientific or technical field or a field relevant to the topic or
• degree in “Medical Informatics” or
• equivalent degree at an internationally recognised Austrian or foreign post-secondary academic institution
• excellent English skills, oral and written 
• consent of a supervisor listed in one of the thematic programmes
• a dissertation topic contributed by the supervisor
