Program structure and curriculum

All PhD tracks offered in the PhD Program share the same structure and general curriculum. The program’s curriculum is divided into a qualification and a dissertation phase:

Qualification Phase

During the qualification phase (about three semesters), students acquire methodological and research-oriented training in mandatory course work in economic theory, applied economics, business studies, econometrics, and economic policy. Students define their research area and find supervisory support from two supervisors. They write research proposals that are discussed with faculty members individually and in seminars in order to provide early feedback on the scientific potential of research ideas. This is a central part of the PhD Program, in which the students have full flexibility in the choice of their research topics and of the supervisors. During this phase, students are funded through stipends that allow for this flexibility. In total, students have to complete a  minimum of 90 ECTS credits  in order to finish the qualification phase of the program.

Dissertation Phase

During the subsequent dissertation phase (about three years), students write a doctoral thesis while having the opportunity to apply their knowledge in the professional research environment that is provided at the Berlin universities and research institutes participating in the Berlin School of Economics. In this phase, students are typically employed at their supervisor’s chair or in research groups at research institutes.

The PhD will be awarded by one of the institutions in the Berlin School of Economics with the right to award doctoral degrees. In most cases, the PhD is awarded by the institution the student’s first supervisor is affiliated with.

What our users think about us

Gökhan

I have been a member of INOMICS community for over 8 years. I came across the platform when I was looking for a summer school in Europe to prepare myself for my Master’s studies, so I decided to give it a shot. As soon as I found my summer course on INOMICS (which I enjoyed a lot), I started to explore the website more and realized that I can also use it for finding great PhD programs, academic jobs, conferences and professional courses. I think it is the most complete source of information for students or career seekers in the field of economics. Gökhan, PhD Student in Economics at Ankara University

Carolina

INOMICS has been quite useful, since information about courses, universities and scholarships is usually hard to access. This is especially true when it comes to the quantity of information one can obtain on INOMICS. I also know that I will be using it to find job postings at the end of this year when I go to the job market! Carolina, PhD Student in International Economics at Brandeis University

The Cologne Graduate School (CGS) in Management, Economics, and Social Sciences offers a doctoral (PhD) programme with an integrated M.Sc. Economic Research. It consists of two stages:

  • The first stage of the programme is the two-years M.Sc. Economic Research. It prepares students for high-level research in economics. It is fully taught in English.
  • In the second stage, PhD students work on research projects for their dissertation and interact with other PhD students and faculty members in workshops, seminars, and summer schools.

The PhD Programme in Economics offers education, funding and supervision for research in all major fields of economics and related fields in management. It is a challenging and rigorous full-time programme in a friendly, supportive environment dedicated to excellence in teaching and research. Taking part in the graduate programme prepares students for academic positions at universities and institutions around the world as well as for top-level positions in internationally-orientated companies.

Applications for the graduated program can be either for the first stage (bachelor students) or for the second stage (master students). We invite applications of outstanding students who are close to finishing a bachelor's or master's degree in economics or a related discipline who count among the top 10% of graduates in their study programme.

Students with a bachelor's degree will enter the integrated graduate programme in the first stage via the M.Sc. Economic Research and can transfer to the second PhD stage after successful graduation of the M.Sc. Economic Research.

Students already holding a research-oriented master degree can directly enter the second stage. Students with a related master's degree without an explicit research focus (e.g. in economics, econometrics, finance, business administration, or math) attend one year of course-work before entering the second stage.

People walking in a hilly landscape in the Beethoven-Park near the WiSo-Faculty, the sun shines with strong backlight through a treetop.

We offer funding and facilities for students at all levels. PhD programme on Innovation, Economics, Governance and Sustainable Development

Research Week

Introduction

Our PhD programme on Innovation, Economics, Governance and Sustainable Development (IEGSD) offers high-quality education, training and supervision to our PhD candidates, leading to a doctoral degree from  Maastricht University .

Through our disciplinary and multidisciplinary research, we aim to contribute to the academic debate and to societal policy and innovation solutions at all stages of the policy process, from setting the policy agenda to delivering and evaluating public policy.

In meeting these aims, we ensure that our research maintains the highest standards of academic and scientific excellence and rigour while remaining policy-relevant.

The PhD programme is part of the  UNU-MERIT Graduate School  and hosts over 100 PhD fellows working on a doctoral dissertation within the core disciplines of UNU-MERIT:

  • The economics of innovation — Topics of interest include: the process of technological change and innovation; the economics of knowledge and new technologies; structural change and economic development; economic complexity and innovation.
  • Public policy and governance — Topics of interest include: governance and institutions; migration and development; population, development and labour economics; social protection; poverty and inequality; policy analysis and evaluation.
  • Societal transformations — Topics of interest include: innovation and entrepreneurship for sustainable transitions; sustainable innovation and transformation; system transitions; innovation for the ‘base of the Pyramid’.

Full-time PhD programme

Dual career

Dual career PhD programme

Phd positions and programmes at unu-merit.

There are several types of PhD positions within UNU-MERIT, and Maastricht University more broadly, depending on the type of funding (with an employment contract from Maastricht University, through a research grant or fellowship or using other external sources of funding) and the time available for the doctoral research (full-time or part-time, in combination with work responsibilities). See also PhD information from Maastricht University .

Salaried PhD positions at UNU-MERIT are less common, but not excluded, and are mainly recruited by way of externally funded projects. Vacancies are usually only advertised when a professor has obtained an external grant and the topic of the PhD dissertation is more or less fixed.  In coordination with the PhD programme director, these fellows can be allowed to participate in one of the PhD programmes in a flexible manner, depending on their time available for PhD research and training needs.

To accommodate the need for a large community of scholars active in the core areas of the institute and the increasingly hybrid type of PhD positions held to conduct the PhD trajectory, the UNU-MERIT PhD programme is composed of two different PhD tracks, each appealing to PhD fellow profiles with different education and supervision needs, funding alternatives and time involvement.

Applications are invited from highly motivated and talented fellows, especially from the Global South, who want to join a thriving and collaborative community of scholars focusing on pressing global challenges, including migration, climate action, digital transformation, poverty and inequality, and particularly their impact on human and economic sustainable development.

All important info for international students in germany (2024/2025).

Born out of the necessity of understanding the effects of colonialism on current political provisions, Development Studies is the interdisciplinary branch of social science and economics that seeks to explain political and social factors that either enhance or limit development in countries. Students will be required to learn a range of topics (history, economics, law, media, and even notions of engineering) in order to formulate and apply frameworks on different levels of governance building.

About this book

Revised and updated for the third edition, this text is an introduction to the newer features of growth theory that are particularly useful in examining the issues of economic development. Growth theory provides a rich and versatile analytical framework through which fundamental questions about economic development can be examined. Structural transformation, in which developing countries transition from traditional production in largely rural areas to modern production in largely urban areas, is an important causal force in creating early economic growth, and as such, is made central in this approach. Towards this end, the authors augment the Solow model to include endogenous theories of saving, fertility, human capital, institutional arrangements, and policy formation, creating a single two-sector model of structural transformation. Based on applied research and practical experiences in macroeconomic development, the model in this book presents a more rigorous, quantifiable, andexplicitly dynamic dual economy approach to development. Common microeconomic foundations and notation are used throughout, with each chapter building on the previous material in a continuous flow.

The updated third edition includes two completely new chapters on government debt and growth slowdowns, topics that will be useful for undergraduate and graduate students studying development economics and macroeconomics.

The Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (RUB), Germany, offers an international and interdisciplinary three-year PhD programme in International Development Studies (IDS). The programme is taught entirely in English. The PhD IDS is embedded within the framework of the RUB Research School, a winner of the German Excellence Initiative. It is offered by the IEE in cooperation with the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Science, and Economics and targets excellent young academics from all over the world who aspire to advance their academic career in international development studies and have a strong interest in cross-disciplinary work. Annually around six to eight candidates are admitted to the programme. Participants can choose from a variety of tailor-made courses while at the same time working on their own research projects. A supervisor is assigned to each research project. All supervisors hold professorial posts in the faculties involved. Teaching modules deal with developmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective such as development economics, political institutions, conflict and democracy, or economics and culture. These seminars are complemented by courses on research methods and statistical analysis. Individual research projects are presented and discussed on a regular basis by the PhD candidates and their supervisors in the framework of the meetings of the IEE Research Clusters. Courses on generic skills, offered by the RUB Research School for doctoral candidates from all disciplines, aim at the training of key competences and include seminars on scientific writing, scientific presentation, and professional (scientific) communication.

Course organisation

The programme cycle is three years, including a field research period. Courses are mainly offered as seminars. The PhD IDS is a combination of working on individual PhD research projects as well as participating in selected teaching modules. Teaching modules deal with developmental issues from a multidisciplinary perspective. These seminars are complemented by courses on research methods and statistical analysis. Individual research projects are presented and discussed on a regular basis by the PhD candidates and their supervisors in the framework of the meetings of the IEE Research Clusters. A field research phase, typically in the fourth semester, forms an integral part of the PhD programme. Courses on generic skills include seminars on scientific writing, scientific presentation and professional (scientific) communication. Please note: Part-time studies are accepted in exceptional cases only! We cannot currently offer any scholarship; PhD IDS applicants therefore have to apply separately for a scholarship by submitting an application to relevant funding organisations. Joint PhD Programme with the International Institute of Social Sciences of Erasmus University Rotterdam (ISS), The Hague, Netherlands: students of the PhD IDS may have the opportunity to accomplish a doctorate jointly supervised and jointly certified by both the IEE and ISS.International elements

Making a measurable economic impact

Saeed Miganeh poses standing in a hallway. A street scene is visible through windows in the background

Previous image Next image

How do you measure the value of an economic policy? Of an aid organization’s programming? For Saeed Miganeh, who completed an  MITx MicroMasters in Data, Economics, and Development Policy and is now enrolled in MIT’s master’s program in Data, Economics, and Design of Policy (DEDP), these are key questions he is determined to answer.

“Enrolling at MIT fed my interest in investigating the political economy questions surrounding the development of African countries,” he says. “It boils down to promoting pro-poor, evidence-based policymaking in the developing world.”

Miganeh earned a bachelor of business administration from the  University of Hargeisa and completed coursework in  Open University Malaysia’s master of business administration program. Before enrolling at MIT full time, he spent 14 years as an accountant with the United Nations’  International Organization for Migration . His work with the IOM fed his curiosity about intent and impact, particularly how political agendas can affect policy adoption, how safeguarding human rights strengthens peace and prevents conflict, how climate change adaptation policies affect the poor, and how promoting intra-African trade spurs economic growth in the continent.

“My journey to DEDP began when I earned a certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation offered by the International Training Center of the  International Labour Organization ,” he recalls. “Our course coach recommended taking MITx courses, which led me to the MicroMasters program.”

Saeed grew up and completed his early education in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland during the reconstruction period after a decade-long civil war with Somalia. He was inspired by his country’s development of a functioning democracy and economy after conflict. Miganeh’s work is all the more impressive for someone who has lived almost exclusively there — with the exception of four years as a child spent in Ethiopia due to the civil war in Somalia — and whose studies have taken place entirely in the republic.

“Africa is the new battleground for fighting global poverty in the 21st century,” he says.

Practices and progress toward measurable improvement

Before pursuing graduate study at MIT, Miganeh worked in youth development programs with the  Somaliland National Youth Organization . “I was the coordinator for one of their youth networks that worked on health,” he says. “After completing my undergraduate study, I assumed the position of finance officer for the organization.”

Later during his tenure with IOM, Miganeh learned that, while the organization has a central evaluation function that evaluates projects and programs, Somaliland’s governmental institutions lacked the capacity to effectively evaluate public policies and programs effectively. His work with the IOM helped him discover the practice areas where he might benefit from partnering with others possessing expertise he’d need to make a difference. “During my work with IOM, I was involved in development projects’ administrative and accounting functions,” he remembers. “I was interested in knowing how projects were impacting beneficiaries’ lives.

Miganeh wants to dig deeper into understanding and answering developing African countries’ political economy questions, noting that “development projects can consume lots of resources from design through implementation.” Ensuring these programs’ effectiveness is crucial to maximizing their impact and societal benefit. “Every country needs to have the necessary human capital to undertake evidence-based policy design to avoid wasting resources,” he says.

He returned to Somaliland to complete a capstone project that will allow him to put his newly acquired skills and knowledge to work. The project is an important part of his master’s program. “I’m [working] with the  Somaliland Ministry of Education & Science , assisting in institutionalizing evidence-based policymaking in the education sector,”  he says.

A unique vision to drive effective change

Miganeh is already planning to use the skills he’s acquiring at MIT to facilitate change at home. “I must discover and produce policy insights using my research and, with the guidance of the top academics and professionals at MIT and other institutions, translate them into effective policies that can make a demonstrable impact,” he says.

Miganeh reports that MITx’s MicroMasters and DEDP master’s programs help students develop the unique blend of skills — including the ability to leverage data-driven insights to design, implement, and evaluate public policies that improve societal outcomes — that can help them become effective agents of social change.

“My early enthusiasm for mathematics in high school and my later work in development organizations gave me the right combination to excel in the rigorous developmental economics coursework at MIT,” he says. “Once I’ve completed the program, I will establish a consultancy to advise government agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector’s corporate social responsibility departments on designing, implementing, and evaluating policies and programs.”

Miganeh lauded the faculty and students he encountered while continuing his studies. “I have developed professionally and personally,” he reports. He saved his highest praise for the Institute, however.

“Pursuing this master’s degree at MIT, where modern economics education has been reinvented and is home to faculty including Nobel laureates and other distinguished professors and scholars, was an enriching lifetime experience, personally and professionally,” he says.

“Looking back on discussions of how to tackle the world’s development challenges is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”

The Department of Economics Welcomes New Faculty for Fall 2024

New Faculty 2024

The Department of Economics is excited to welcome five new professors to its faculty this fall, and one new Postdoctoral Associate who will later join as a faculty member.

These esteemed scholars bring a wealth of expertise and diverse perspectives that will create exciting new research opportunities within the Department, enrich our teaching curriculum, and contribute to the vibrant Yale economics community. We are thrilled to have them join our faculty!

The new faculty members are Professor Timothy Christensen , an econometrician, Assistant Professor Mayara Felix , a trade and development economist, Assistant Professor Joel Flynn , a macroeconomist and economic theorist, Associate Professor Elliot Lipnowski , an economic theorist, and Associate Professor Pascual Restrepo , a macroeconomist and labor economist. We also welcome Cody Cook , a labor and public economist, who will serve as a Cowles Foundation Postdoctoral Associate this year and then join the faculty as an Assistant Professor in the 2025-26 academic year. You can read more about their backgrounds and research below.

Looking forward, Bentley MacLeod , a labor economist, will join as a Visiting Professor and Senior Research Scientist, starting in Spring 2025. Finally, starting in the 2025-26 academic year, we are also excited to welcome Janet Currie , a renowned public economist, to our faculty.

Timothy Christensen

Christensen

Timothy Christensen joins the Department as a Professor of Economics. Before joining Yale, he was a Professor of Economics at University College London. He received a PhD in Economics from Yale in 2014. His research interests lie broadly across theoretical and applied econometrics, financial econometrics, and statistics/data science. His most recent research is at the intersection of econometrics and machine learning, where he works on the integration of unstructured data into quantitative economic modeling. He has been awarded grants by the National Science Foundation and the European Research Council.

Mayara Felix

Mayara Felix

Mayara Felix joins the Department as an Assistant Professor, after completing the 2023-2024 year as a Cowles Foundation Postdoctoral Associate. Her research is in the fields of development and international trade. She studies policies intended to improve market efficiency, such as import tariff reductions, free trade agreements, and outsourcing. A special focus of her research is firms’ responses to these policies and their implications to competition, either in labor or product markets. She thus often borrows methods and insights from the fields of labor, public, and industrial organization. Mayara received a PhD in Economics from MIT in June 2021.

Flynn

Joel Flynn joins the Department as an Assistant Professor, after completing the 2023-24 year as a Cowles Foundation Postdoctoral Associate. His research is in macroeconomics and economic theory with an emphasis on business cycles and mechanism design. He has recently studied how economic uncertainty affects the transmission of monetary policy and how viral economic narratives cause macroeconomic boom-bust cycles. His mechanism design research has focused on the optimal design of two-sided matching markets and optimal contracting when contracts are incomplete. Joel graduated from MIT with a PhD in Economics in June 2023.

Elliot Lipnowski

Elliot Lipnowski

Elliot Lipnowski joins the Department as an Associate Professor, studying microeconomic theory. His interests include information design, mechanism design, dynamic games, organizational economics, and strategic uncertainty. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo and his PhD at the Stern School of Business at New York University. Before joining Yale, he was a faculty member at the University of Chicago and at Columbia University. He currently serves as an associate editor at Theoretical Economics and at Econometrica .

Pascual Restrepo

Pascual Restrepo

Pascual Restrepo joins the Department as an Associate Professor. Prior to Yale, Restrepo was a Professor at Boston University. He completed a PhD in Economics at MIT and a Postdoc at the Cowles Foundation at Yale. His research explores the implications of technological change for inequality and productivity. His most recent work studies the development and adoption of new automation technologies and how they have affected the economy, firms, and labor markets.

Cody Cook

Cody Cook joins the Department as a Cowles Postdoctoral Associate before joining as an Assistant Professor in July 2025. He is an economist who works at the intersection of public, urban, and labor economics, often focusing on the design and evaluation of policies affecting inequality in cities. His research combines large-scale datasets with tools adapted from industrial organization. Some of his recent work has studied the tradeoffs of building affordable housing in different types of neighborhoods, the distributional effects of congestion pricing, and how preferences for neighborhood amenities vary by household income. Per Stromhaug.

Per Stromhaug, who has guided economic development and innovation activities at Binghamton University for more than a decade, has been named senior associate vice president for economic development at UB.

The appointment was announced yesterday by Venu Govindaraju, vice president for research and economic development.

Stromhaug, who has a PhD in cell biology and an MBA, has worked at Binghamton University since 2013. He most recently served as associate vice president for innovation and economic development, a role in which he helped the university and Binghamton region become a national leader in battery innovation and manufacturing..

“We are incredibly pleased that Per has joined the University at Buffalo,” Govindaraju says. “His extensive experience in economic development and as a research scientist will help further technology commercialization and innovation throughout the region and beyond. His leadership in connecting university talent and assets to entrepreneurs, businesses and the community will be foundational to drive Western New York’s growth in artificial intelligence, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and more.”

Stromhaug, who will lead the university’s economic development strategy and initiatives, succeeds Rick Gardner, who previously held the position.

He will oversee the Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships (BEP) team, which connects companies and startups to UB resources — including world-class experts, state-of-the-art research labs and equipment, entrepreneurial programs and other support services — to help businesses grow.

The BEP team also leads UB’s technology transfer activities to license and commercialize research; it oversees the university’s incubators and early-stage startup programs and builds pathways between faculty and students to companies in the region and throughout the state to address workforce gaps.

Stromhaug will lead multiple grant-funded programs such as Cultivator, which nurtures Western New York-based startup founders in their earliest stages by providing mentorship, investments and other resources to transform their innovative ideas into viable, scalable businesses.

Stromhaug will also oversee operations and programming for UB’s Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences (CBLS), Center of Excellence in Materials Informatics (CMI) and Center for Advanced Technology in Big Data and Health Sciences (UB CAT). These programs match New York State companies with experts, wet labs, office space, shared equipment and funding sources to accelerate research and development.

“I am extremely excited to take on this role at UB,” Stromhaug says. “UB has a strong and growing research portfolio and is a national leader in multiple fields. The Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships team has done a tremendous job translating UB innovation into community benefits, and I look forward to joining the team and helping to grow economic development efforts further.”

Under Stromhaug’s leadership, Binghamton University won numerous prestigious grants, including $113 million in funding from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and Empire State Development for the Build Back Better Regional Challenge to start the New Energy New York initiative aimed at building a nationally leading battery innovation and manufacturing ecosystem.

His efforts also led to the university receiving $15 million — with a potential to be extended to $160 million — from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be one of 10 inaugural Regional Innovation Engines. He also secured one of 31 national tech hub designations for the New Energy New York program, as well as $6 million from NSF’s Accelerating Research Translation program.

He led Binghamton’s Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships, which oversees numerous technology commercialization programs, including NSF’s Innovation Corps site in Binghamton, the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator in downtown Binghamton and other incubator programs.

Additionally, Stromhaug oversaw the Small Business Development Center for the Southern Tier and the Trade Assistance Adjustment Center for New York, New Jersey and Puerto Rico. He also secured Binghamton’s partnership in the University Technology Licensing Pool, the first of its kind university patent pool aimed at streamlining licensing of patents to industry.

Prior to Binghamton, Stromhaug worked for the SUNY Research Foundation, coordinating technology commercialization across the SUNY system. He also worked at the University of Missouri.

From 2003-10, Stromhaug was an assistant professor of cell biology at the University of Missouri, where he led a lab that conducted research on the molecular and cellular biology of intracellular transport and organelle biogenesis. Prior to that, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Florida and the Norwegian Cancer Society.

He earned a BS in chemistry and biochemistry, an MS in cell biology and a PhD in cell biology, all from the University of Oslo in Norway. He earned an MBA from the University of Missouri.
