Doctor of Philosophy in Accounting are research programmes offered throughout of the year. These programmes are offered as full-time and part-time modes to qualified Malaysian and International Students to do independent research supervised by their respective lecturers in the field of accounting. As the field of accounting is dynamic, new areas/field of studies are always emerging as newer technological tools and developments become available. Upon graduation, students may seek employment in both public and private sectors.

- A Master's degree in research mode; or
- A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 3.00/4; or
- A Master’s degree in related area with CGPA 2.50-2.99/4 with additional requirements; or
- Bachelor’s degree in related area with minimum CGPA 3.67/4 (fast-track to PhD)

The minimum score for each programme can be vary from the below list, candidates are required to check for each programme requirements.
- A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
- A minimum score of 40 for TOEFL (Internet-based); or
- A minimum of Band 7.5 for TOEFL Essentials (Online); or
- A minimum score of 154 for Cambridge English: Advance (CAE)/Proficiency (CPE) /Preliminary (PET) /First (FCE)/ Linguaskill Online min. score 154; or
- A minimum score of 47 for Pearson Test of English (PTE); or
- A minimum of Band 107 for CIEP Level (ELS); or
- A minimum of Band 3.5 for Malaysian University English Test (MUET)
Exemption is given to candidate if:
- English is the candidate’s mother tongue or National Language; or
- Candidate graduated from an Institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at Bachelor and/or Master degree level is English (statement of proof required)
- Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
- Part-time: Min 6 semesters / Max 15 semesters

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Accounting is offered by full research. Students should have adequate research knowledge and skills as stipulated by the Academic Committee. Students who do not possess these criteria are required to register and pass two (2) pre-requisite courses i.e. research methodology and academic writing and/or other any other courses as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee before they can pursue their research work.
Students are also required to present their research work at colloquiums/symposiums set by the school before defending their research proposal to an appointed committee which comprised a chairperson and two (2) reviewers. Students also have to attend a viva voce session to defend their thesis.
Applicants must possess:
- A Master’s degree in the field of Accounting or related fields from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate (Applicants for the PhD programme under OYAGSB and UUMCOB must possess the minimum CGPA of 3.00 for a master degree with CGPA); or
- A Bachelor’s degree in the field of Accounting or related fields with CGPA of at least 3.67/First Class or equivalent from Universiti Utara Malaysia or any other institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate and pass the interview conducted by the Postgraduate Committee; or
- Candidates without a qualification in the related fields or work experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the programme and meet the minimum CGPA based on (a) to (b); or
- Any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate;
- The candidate with a minimum of CGPA 3.00 to 3.66 bachelor’s degree and published at least one (1) indexed journal article in Web of Science/SCOPUS.
- The candidate must obtain a strong recommendation from the supervisor.
- The application is to be submitted in the second trimester of studies or within 12 months for full time candidate and within 24 months for part time candidate from the registration date of the study programme.
- The application can be submitted ONCE only throughout the candidature, and
- Fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate.
- Should attach a motivational letter and research proposal.
- Must propose supervisors’ name who have already agreed with research topic.
- Those who are short listed will be called for an interview session.
All international candidates should meet any one of the following English language requirements set by the University before they are accepted for admission.
- TOEFL score of between 477 to 549 for Paper Based Test
- TOEFL score between 53 to 79 for Internet Based Test
- IELTS of Band 5.5
- MUET of Band 3.0
- Cambridge English Advanced Test score of between 162 to 168
- Pearson Test of English Academic score of between 42 to 49
- TOEFL Score of 550 and above in the Paper Based Test
- TOEFL Score of 80 and above in the Internet Based Test
- IELTS of Band 6.0 and above
- MUET of Band 4.0 and above
- Cambridge English Advanced Test score of 169 and above
- Pearson Test of English Academic score of 50 and above
- Obtain a degree from any institutions with English language Education System
- Obtain a degree from any Public University in Malaysia with English as a language of instruction
- Obtain a degree from any Private University or College University in Malaysia that are listed in Malaysian Qualifications Register (MQR)
- Students who do not meet any of the above English language requirement will not be allowed to register for courses or continue with their programme of study. They may attend the Intensive Language Course for International Students that will prepare and assist them for their MUET examination.
Our Programme is a research-based degree that has two key components: coursework and thesis. Before undertaking research, students are required to pass two compulsory courses of 8 credits where they will acquire necessary research skills to undertake independent research.

• The Universiti Malaya (UM) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) focuses on developing professionals with higher critical thinking skills in the field of business and capable of conducting academic research.
• This programme offers high-quality doctoral training to postgraduate candidates. You will be assigned an academic supervisor who will provide guidance on the formal specification of your topic, the structure and organisation of your thesis and the general direction of your research.
• To assist you in the transition to independent research and to help you acquire the necessary skills, you are required to complete a Research Method course and another additional course related to your area of research.
• The pedagogies are aimed at optimising the efficiency of the learning process. Each candidate is required to complete a minimum of 81 credit hours of learning and research activities. On average, the candidates would require three (3) years of study. * This information will be used to intake semester 1 2021/2022 onwards

Career opportunity, course structure.
• The programme offers weekday classes from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm with an emphasis on quality teaching and candidate participation. The minimum and maximum periods of candidature are four (4) and twelve (12) semesters respectively. It should be noted that any withdrawal from the semester(s) by a candidate will not be excluded from the duration of the programme.
• The design of the programme structure allows the candidates to maximise their learning and develop the skills that are essential for their research development. Candidates must PASS thesis examination and submit all related deliverables. In addition to this, candidates are also required to take and PASS a core courses on Research Methodology and elective course of their choice.
ENTRY REQUIREMENT
Applicants for the programme should possess:
• A master's degree and bachelor's degree in any field with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 or its equivalent from a recognised university; and
• A minimum of IELTS score 6.0 OR TOEFL score 550 (paper) / 213 (computer) OR PTE score of 55 for the paper-based (Academic) for international application whose first language is not English.
A minimum of candidate maybe called for an admission interview to gauge specific skills / knowledge required for the programme.

Introduction.
This programme offers rigorous research training in accounting theory, methodologies, and analysis to produce scholars capable of contributing to best practices and trends in the field of accounting.
To qualify for PhD (Accounting) , applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:
> A Master’s Degree [Level 7, Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF)] in related fields as accepted by the PBS Senate; or
> A Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) in non-related fields as accepted by the PBS Senate, subject to having relevant working experience and rigorous internal assessment; or
> A Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) in non-related fields as accepted by the PBS Senate and without relevant working experience, subject to passing pre-requisite courses; or
> Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) recognised by the Malaysian government.
Note: In compliance with the latest regulatory requirements (https://bit.ly/MQA2nd – please refer to pages 38 & 39) students are required to complete a Pre-Requisite Course (PRC). It is compulsory for students to attend and pass this course before/while pursuing their studies at PBS. The purpose of this course is to equip the students with basic business knowledge in order to prepare them for the programme and students are required to pay a fee of RM 500.00 before registering for PRC. Applicable to those who do not have a business or management background. (Not applicable to exchange students).

This program provides doctoral (PhD) students with the opportunity to focus on developing knowledge and expertise in their chosen discipline, as well as developing professional skills that will support their career ambitions.
Each student's research will be supported by the development of a range of skills that will help them to become more efficient researchers, ultimately improving the quality of the research and developing generic/transferable skills of value to prospective employers.
Offered by the Department of Accounting, Monash Business School and the School of Business (Malaysia).
Program requirements
All PhD students will be required to undertake compulsory training in the following areas:
- Monash Graduate Research Induction (online)
- research Integrity (online)
- faculty induction, including occupational health and safety (where required).
Coursework component
All PhD students must complete coursework units, normally prior to confirmation of their enrolment. In consultation with their supervisor/s, students choose from the following units appropriate to their thesis topic:
- BEX6300 Philosophy of research
- BEX6100 Advanced quantitative research methods or BEX6200 Advanced qualitative research methods
- BEX6001 Foundations of accounting research*
- BEX6002 Current issues in accounting research*
*Malaysian campus students will participate via concurrent video conference in the same seminars as the on campus students.
Students may also be directed or encouraged to attend and make presentations at various forums throughout their enrolment.

Academic Requirements
i. A master’s degree in the field or related fields accepted by the HEP Senate; or ii. Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree recognised by the Government of Malaysia. iii. Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the HEP. * Applicable to all Doctoral programmes including Doctoral Degree by Retrospective or prior publication and TVET.
