School is the place where children spend a long span of time every day. It is the place where basic knowledge, manners, and etiquette are learned by a child. The surroundings of a school are very important because it affects the students and their progress to a great extent. The children in the school today will become responsible citizens of the nation in the future. Keeping a healthy environment is necessary for schools to accelerate the growth of children.

Two main components of a healthy environment are cleanliness and greenery. Keeping the school clean should be as important as studying in school because a dirty environment can create a very bad impact on students and teachers too. Cleanliness can be maintained by setting up some simple rules such as:

  • Throw waste in the dustbins.
  • Clean the lunch tables before leaving.
  • Do not damage any displays.
  • Organize a cleanliness drive every month.
  • Prohibit writing on any school property.
  • Wipe feet on the mat before entering the classroom.

Teachers have to make students understand the importance of cleanliness. It will help the students to follow the rules not only because they are meant to be followed but because they will understand the value of cleanliness. The above-mentioned rules should be followed by the students, teachers, and staff carefully but there are some responsibilities on the part of the school authorities too. Cleaning staff should be there in school, awareness should be created, environment-friendly disinfectants should be used regularly, recycle bins should be put all around the school.

Greenery is good for the environment and it enhances beauty too. Today when the whole world is facing a worldwide environmental crisis it is very important to make the pupils understand that trees are our saviors. Schools should provide sustainable education to develop environmental consciousness among the children. Proper actions should be taken to keep the schools green which will create a positive impact on the environment as well as on the students and all the people working there. In order to maintain greenery, some rules should be maintained by the school authority.

Students should not trample plants. There should be one period for planting new plants and taking care of the plants. Special classes should be taken to create environmental awareness. Special classes should be taken on how to take care of plants.

Some other steps can also be taken to make the students feel that they are on the lap of nature like switching off lights and let the sunlight come into the classrooms, taking one or two classes on the ground under the shade of trees on sunny days, installing solar panels and using solar energy, insisting them to use battery-operated vehicles, etc.

The primary agenda of a school is to provide good quality of education but a school is also the place where a human being learns to socialize for the first time. Schools should have an ideal environment, characterized by cleanliness and eco-friendliness because whatever children learn in school creates an impact on their whole life. A child spends a long portion of the day in school so it must have a perfect environment. A good attitude of students and teachers can be promoted in a clean environment towards each other. Students, teachers, and staff feel happy to work in a clean, green, and beautiful place. In conclusion, it can be said that schools are a second home for children so the importance of the environment of the school is unavoidable. Everyone involved there must work together as a team to make the school clean and green.

Do you find that your campus isn’t very green but you’re not sure what to do about it? There are so many ways for school campuses to be more sustainable with the right initiatives and support. It’s important for universities and students to be leaders in green movements because academics and students are often seen as the precursors and motivators for change in the rest of society. Evidently, it’s not always easy to make the switch to a greener campus because some options require a lot of investment from the school, but challenges and obstacles don’t mean that it’s not worth trying. Here are 10 different ways that you can promote sustainability and help your college go green.

1. Install Recycling and Composting Stations on Campus

The easiest way to start having a more sustainable college campus is by improving the recycling and composting program. It’s an easy thing to implement and a sure win for green initiatives. Every location on campus that currently has a trash bin should also get a recycling bin – either a couple for different materials or a single-stream option. You can also add a bin for organic waste. This can reduce up to 50 percent of misdirected waste. These bins can come with simple images to show users what waste goes in which bin.

There are certain easy actions you can take to get this going on your campus, such as contacting local recycling facilities and finding out what materials they accept. Speak with your school’s facility unit to find extra bins and label them properly. With their approval, add these bins in the busiest parts of the school, especially where there are already garbage bins and near food vendor sites.

2. Set Up an E-Waste Drive 

If there’s one place full of outdated and unusable electronics, it’s college campuses. Consider hosting an e-waste collection drive to successfully promote sustainability on your campus. Simply speak with the facilities department for permission and put collection bins in a parking lot of the campus.

Talk to local businesses and vendors to find out which ones accept electronics and if they accept bulk deliveries. Ask your university or local area businesses to sponsor the drive, and use social media to share information about the drive, including a list of all the accepted electronics.

3. Start a Moving Season Donation Program

During moving season from dorms, there is often a lot of junk to go through from clothes students don’t want to keep to extra food in the kitchens. Instead of all these items going into the trash bin, set up a donation program so this stuff can go to people in need.

Ask the school administration to pitch in for the bike costs, locks, racks, and any associated maintenance costs. 5. Attend Summits on Sustainability

What better way to expose the student population to the benefits of sustainability than meeting people with similar mindsets and going to a sustainability event? Look into sustainability events in your area and organize a school trip to one. It’s a great way to increase membership of a sustainability-on-campus committee and bring great ideas to campus.

8. Start a Garden on Campus

A great green initiative is to start a community garden for organic produce. You can either grow produce in partnership with the dining hall or local food options or donate what you grow to the local food bank or pantry. It’s a good way to educate campus students and faculty on healthy living.

There’s nothing too ambitious for your sustainability program, so think about pledges to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions, carbon neutrality by a certain year, and even fund a certain amount towards research and education efforts each year. When students are made aware of sustainable living practices, they often carry those habits into their life beyond college.

The biggest step is making sure that sustainability is front and center in everyone’s mind. By adopting these ideas, you can help make your college campus more sustainable.

Green schools are not only environmentally friendly but also generate cost savings in the form of reduced water and energy use. The standard for environmentally friendly schools is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a framework for building schools that meet certain benchmarks for sustainability, and a certification that more schools are seeking to achieve as they upgrade existing facilities and expand their campuses.

Green Schools Alliance

Many schools are taking the pledge of the Green Schools Alliance to make their campuses more sustainable and to reduce their carbon footprints by 30 percent over five years. The goal is to achieve carbon neutrality. The GSA program involves 5 million students at more than 8,000 schools, districts, and organizations from 48 U.S. states and 91 countries.

All this work by schools around the world has helped the Green Cup Challenge to yield a savings of more than 9.7 million kW hours. Anyone can join the Green Schools Alliance, but you don't need to be a part of a formal program to implement environment-friendly practices in your school.

There are steps that parents and students can take separately from their school to reduce energy use and waste, and students and parents can also work with their schools to determine the school's energy use and how to reduce it over time.

Steps Parents and Students Can Take

Parents and students can also contribute to making their schools greener and take steps such as the following:

  • Encourage parents and kids to use public transportation or to walk or bike to school.
  • Use carpools to bring many students to school together.
  • Reduce idling outside school; instead, turn off car and bus engines.
  • Encourage the school to use buses with cleaner fuels, such as biodiesel or to start investing in hybrid buses.
  • During community service days, have students replace existing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents.
  • Ask the school to use environmentally friendly cleaning fluids and nontoxic pesticides.
  • Encourage the lunchroom to avoid using plastics.
  • Spearhead the use of "trayless" eating. Students and teachers can carry their food instead of using trays, and the lunchroom staff won't have to wash trays, thereby reducing water use.
  • Work with maintenance staff to put stickers on the paper towel and napkin dispensers reminding students and teachers to use paper products sparingly.
  • Encourage the school to sign the Green Schools Initiative.

How Schools Can Reduce Energy Usage

In addition, students can work with the administration and maintenance staff at their schools to reduce the energy use. First, students can conduct an audit of their school's light and energy use and then monitor the school's energy use on a monthly basis.

The Green Schools Alliance provides students with a step-by-step plan to create a task force and reduce carbon emissions over a suggested two-year timetable. Their helpful tool kit provides actions schools can take such as using daylight instead of overhead lighting, weatherizing windows and doors, and installing Energy Star appliances.

Educating the Community

Creating a greener school requires educating the community about the importance of reducing carbon emissions and living more environmentally sustainable lives. First, inform yourself about what other schools are doing to become greener. For example, Riverdale Country Day School in New York City has installed a synthetic playing field composed of cork and coconut fiber that saves millions of gallons of water per year.

Other schools offer classes in living environmentally conscious lives, and their lunchrooms offer local produce that is shipped shorter distances, thereby reducing energy use. Students may be more motivated to make their school greener when they are aware of what similar schools are doing.

Find a way to communicate regularly to your school about what you are doing to reduce energy use through newsletters or a page on your school's website. Get people involved in taking and meeting the goals of the Green Schools Alliance to reduce carbon emissions over five years.

Greening schools

A “green school” is defined as a learning institution that takes a whole-of-institution approach to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), in particular by addressing climate change through its teaching, facilities and operations, school governance and community partnerships. Green schools aim to promote knowledge and skills for the social, economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of sustainable development.­­

As part of UNESCO’s contribution to the  Greening Education Partnership , a collaborative process has been undertaken to develop the Green school quality standard with the goal of transforming at least 50% of schools in each country into green schools by 2030.

Green school quality standard

The Green school quality standard aims to harmonize accreditation criteria for schools committed to sustainability through a whole institution approach to ESD. It targets accreditation scheme organizers, including civil society-led networks, international associations and governments, providing recognition for schools' ESD actions, particularly in climate change education. The standard also aims to support education authorities and policymakers. To meet the standard, accreditation schemes must incorporate at least one-third of suggested activities in governance, facilities, teaching, and community engagement.

Key steps to use the standard

Deciding to become a Green School is not an end in itself, but only the beginning of a process to anchor sustainability values in all dimensions of the school life. If successful, the process transforms not just buildings but lives of people, empowered by the skills and values developed that are internalized by the various actors. The process to align to the standard are outlined below for accreditation schemes, governments and schools.

There are different pathways to align to the standard: 

1. Accreditation schemes are encouraged to:

  • Review their programme’s criteria against the standard.
  • Meet the minimum threshold of alignment by covering 1/3 of the actions recommended under each of the four dimensions including the four essential actions.
  • Fill in the dedicated template below to show that your accreditation scheme is aligned with the standard and send it to the Greening Education Partnership secretariat at UNESCO ([email protected]) to be published online.
  • Continue to support schools to become green climate-ready schools based on the standard and their specific needs and contexts.
  • Collaborate with the Greening Education Partnership to monitor the progress of schools within the network and contribute to achieving the global target of getting 50% of schools in each country green by 2030.

2. Governments are encouraged to:

  • collaborate with existing accreditation schemes that are aligned with the standard which are present in their country/region; and/or
  • develop a government-led scheme that accredits Green Schools in alignment with the standard. In this case, the authority in charge is invited to fill in the dedicated “Expression of alignment” template below to show that the accreditation scheme is aligned with the standard and send it to the Greening Education Partnership secretariat at UNESCO ([email protected]) to be published online.    
  • Collaborate with the Greening Education Partnership to monitor the progress of schools within the network and contribute to getting 50% of schools in each country green by 2030.

3. Schools who are interested in becoming a Green School using the standard are encouraged to:

  • Consider joining a school accreditation scheme present in the country/region that is aligned with the standard.
  • Follow a whole-institution approach to ESD in your journey to becoming a green climate-ready school.

5 Steps to a Greener School

Ahhh, August -- the dog days of summer. Before the back-to-school frenzy. I hope that you, your family and students everywhere have enjoyed some unstructured time, some time outdoors, and some time getting your hands and feet dirty at the beach, the park, your backyard, or your front stoop or sidewalk. While you are -- hopefully -- in this relaxed state of mind, I want to plant a few ideas to change your perspective and practices as you head back to school this year. These are ideas for bringing the outdoors, healthy living and stewardship into your school and community.

Environmental Impact

When you start thinking about heading back to school, what comes to your mind (or your kids' minds) first? I bet they are thoughts like, "What shall I wear on the first day? What kinds of notebooks and supplies do I need to get? Who will my teacher (or students) be?" And then, "What will we do and learn this year?"

You are probably not thinking about how your answers to these questions have tremendous impacts on our environment, our health and our learning. Did you know, for example, that K-12 schools' paper use consumes about six million trees? What about pencils? There are 14 billion produced every year, many made with wood from ancient forests. And what about school lunch? It's estimated that the average school-age child using a disposable lunch generates 67 pounds of waste per school year. That's about 18,760 pounds of lunch waste for just one average-size elementary school!

Now imagine your dream school. This school has a garden where students learn science by getting their hands dirty growing food they cook and eat. The classrooms are flooded with natural light, and the air is fresh because the cleaning products the school uses are free from asthma-causing chemicals, and that increases attendance. With the participation of the whole school community, the district has cut its garbage bill in half and is composting and recycling more than 50% of its garbage. The students track daily energy production from the school's solar panels, using their math skills. They share their knowledge about sustainability with the surrounding community through a video they made and recently presented at a city council meeting.

How to Start a Green Initiative at School

These days, many people are looking for ways that they can help the environment. As individuals, we can only have so much impact. Working together, though, it's possible have an effect on bigger institutions we are part of, such as schools. This can produce more powerful results than just making individual changes. Look around your school--is it doing all it can to protect the environment? If not, you can work together with your classmates, parents, and the school itself to start a green initiative. You can help your school become a leader in conservation and do something significant to protect our earth.

Assessing Your School's Green Performance

Step 1 See if your school is recycling all it can.

  • Recycling conserves energy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It's easy to do, and in some cases can even bring in a little extra money for your school. [1] X Research source
  • It shouldn't be hard to find out if your school is recycling. Are there recycling bins? If not, the school probably isn't recycling. Do people seem to be using these bins?
  • Keep in mind that there are many things that can be recycled. It is possible that even if your school is recycling, it could be recycling more. This includes paper, cans, plastic, and electronic waste like obsolete computers.

Step 2 Find out if your school is composting.

  • Composting can be done on-site in a school garden or in worm bins. It can also be done in a commercial facility that picks up compostable materials.
  • Again, it shouldn't be hard to find out if your school is doing this. Are there designated bins for composting? If not, the school probably isn't happening.

Step 3 Look into whether your school is purchasing sustainable supplies.

  • Are the paper products made with recycled content?
  • Are plastic products labeled as PVC free? PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a highly toxic plastic.
  • Are computers and other electronics energy efficient? Look for an Energy Star logo and rating.

Step 4 Investigate your school lunch program.

  • Buying food from local farms, to reduce emissions from shipping.
  • Offering a vegetarian meal option, participating in a "Meat Free Monday" program, or encouraging responsible hunter education. Domestic livestock farming is one of the biggest sources of CO2 emissions in the world today. [6] X Research source

Step 5 Check into what...

  • Use of energy-efficient light bulbs, such as compact fluorescents.
  • Installation of solar panels.
  • Installation of motion sensors or timers to turn lights off automatically.
  • A "turn it off campaign" encouraging students and faculty to turn off lights, computers, and other appliances at the end of the day or when not in use for an extended period.
  • An ample supply of bicycle racks to encourage students to walk or ride a bicycle to school rather than relying on motorized transportation.

Step 6 Examine your school's water use.

  • Stopped any leaks promptly.
  • Installed automatic faucets for efficient hand-washing.
  • Installed waterless urinals or low-flush urinals in the boys' bathrooms.
  • Installed dual-flush toilets inside all student bathroom stalls.
  • Set up a rainwater collection system such as rain barrels or rain gardens to control runoff.

Step 7 Try to determine if your school is avoiding toxic chemicals.

  • It may not be possible for you to find out what clean products your school is using, but it can't hurt to ask. Your school's custodian, a teacher, or the principal might be willing to let you have a look at the cleaning supplies being used. Look for the Green Seal or EcoLogo symbol on the labels of these products to see if they are green products.
  • Even if you can't check into this now, it's something to keep in mind as you develop your strategic plan for your green initiative.

Starting a Green Team and Making a Plan

Step 1 Ask some friends to join your green team.

  • From the planning stage onward, you're going to be working with lots of other people in making decisions and carrying them out. An easy place to start putting your team together is by asking friends to be part of your green initiative.

Step 2 Involve parents and teachers.

  • A good place to start is with your parents and the parents of your friends who want to help.
  • Next, talk to some teachers who you think might by sympathetic to what you're doing. Support from teachers will make your campaign to improve your school more powerful. Teachers will also be important later in helping make sure the plans you make are actually carried out.
  • Having support from custodial staff is a good idea too!

Step 3 Join an organization.

  • Green Schools Initiative, Go Green Initiative, [7] X Research source and the Healthy Schools Campaign are three of the big national organizations that help with green initiatives in schools. [8] X Research source You can sign up on their websites and download a variety of helpful guides and other resources for your campaign.
  • Look into whether there might be local organizations in your area that could also help.

Step 4 Do some research.

  • For example, if you are going to try to get your school to start composting, you might find out who in your area does commercial composting, in case your school doen't want to do it on site. Contact them and find out what it would cost to start picking up compost at your school.
  • You should also look into what resources your state provides to schools that are trying to go green. In some states, for example, the Department of Environmental Protection will have programs already in place to help schools be more eco-friendly. [9] X Research source
  • It's also a good idea to look into steps taken by other local schools in your area. This can help provide ideas, and shows that the steps you suggest taking are actually doable.
  • The more information you can collect before meeting with school authorities, the more likely you will be to persuade them that making some green changes is a good idea.

Step 5 Meet with the principal and/or school board.

  • Ask for a meeting with your principal, members of the school board, and/or other administrators. If possible, bring supportive parents and teachers to the meeting as well, along with your research.
  • Explain the ways you think your school could do a better job of protecting the environment, and that you have gathered supporters who are willing to help make these changes happen.
  • Ask supportive administrators to join your green team to help guide your school's environmental efforts.
  • Find out what resources the school is or is not willing to make available for your green initiative. Is the school willing/able to spend a little money on this? Will it allow students to construct worm bins for composting? Is the school willing to host an event to raise student awareness? How else can the school help make green changes possible?

Step 6 Encourage an audit.

  • Your green team and school staff can work together to conduct a systematic study of your school's energy use, waste disposal, and so on.
  • The green initiative organization that you've joined can provide you with resources to help your school conduct this audit including surveys, checklists, and curricula for teachers who want to make the audit a part of their lesson plans.

Step 7 Create a strategic plan.

  • The plan should include both long-term goals, to inspire people, and short-term goals that can reasonably be achieved within the year.
  • Your short term goals should feature a list of specific actions to be taken (and who is responsible for making these things happen), a list of necessary resources for making these steps take place, and a timeline for when they can reasonably be completed. [10] X Research source
  • Your school will need to approve the plan so you can be sure your goals can actually be achieved.

Step 8 Monitor progress.

  • A green initiative is not a one-time change, it is an ongoing process. Your green team should plan on meeting at least once a month to discuss how things are going and revise the plan as necessary.
  • The green team should conduct an annual review of how much impact the green initiative has had on the school. Once the original short-term goals have been achieved, the team should set new goals and look for ways to make the school ever more environmentally friendly.
  • Once again, the Green Schools Initiative and other organizations can provide valuable resources for monitoring your school's progress toward the greener future your strategic plan was designed to create.

Raising Student Awareness

Step 1 Host an event.

  • Your green initiative will be much more successful if students participate. For example, if you add compost bins to your cafeteria, but students don't understand why they should use them or what goes in them, your composting plan isn't going to be as successful. Work with your green team to host an assembly or another gathering of students to promote the green initiative.
  • Many have found that an Earth Day celebration on or around April 22nd is a great way to raise student awareness and participation in the green initiative while connecting your efforts to global environmental issues.
  • Make this event something fun that students get to actually participate in. This can be more effective than just asking them to listen to a boring speech.

Step 2 Encourage green curricula.

  • You can encourage teachers who want to help to look at the free lesson plans that are provided by many of the national green initiative organizations (including, hopefully, the one you've joined).

  • Many people conducting green initiatives have found that hands-on projects, where students get to see first-hand the effects of their actions on the environment, work best. [14] X Research source
  • One suggestion for hands-on in class participation is to involve students in monitoring the progress of the green initiative. How much waste is being recycled that wasn't before? How much waste that should be going into recycling bins is still ending up in the trash?

Step 3 Start a club.

  • The club can help with monitoring, recycling or composting efforts, building worm bins, maintaining rain gardens, or any other task that will help the school meet its green goals.

Apart from regular academics through the day, our time table is spotted with periods for music, games, project work etc. We undertake sports activities for an hour after the last period, which gets over at 3:30 PM.

Co-Curricular Activities

According to our interests, we are encouraged to participate in Arts & Crafts, NSS, Scout etc., and become members of various Clubs and Associations. Medical Teams and Psychologists visit us regularly to aid our holistic growth.

I love my school, teachers and friends very much. I aim to complete my studies with laurels. I wish to shine brightly in my higher studies and career, to spread the pride of my school.

My school is situated in the foothills of Yercaud in Salem district, Tamil Nadu and is called “Golden Gates”. It fosters a love for learning and this is clearly seen in its location which is unlike any other school. It is well placed in a natural setting with hills all around and streams flowing nearby. Inside the campus too, there is abundant nature with almond trees lining the divide between buildings and many shrubs and plants bordering different sports grounds. This facilitates practical study and most of our science and geography classes happen outside. Our Principal and Correspondent have made it their mission to create a healthy and organic atmosphere for learning.

My school teachers come in all shades of character. There are those teachers who have great love for the subject they teach and impart that love to us students too. Even a student who hates that particular subject will start liking it, if he/she sits in their classes. Next, we have jovial teachers who are cheerful in nature and radiate joy to all around them. They are friendly and compassionate and are the go-to people for all students when any trouble comes up. Then, there are the strict teachers who are rigorous in nature and make sure discipline and decorum is maintained throughout school. They are the ones who keep rule breakers and unruly students at bay. Together, our teachers form the heart and soul of the school.

On weekdays, typical school schedule happens in my school too. We start our day with a prayer assembly. With a short news time, prayer song and any specific instructions for the day, we depart to our respective classes. After four periods of subjects with a short snack break in between, we break for lunch. Lunch is when the whole school comes alive with shouts and screams of laughter as we all socialise with fellow classmates. Then follows three periods of subjects in the afternoon and off we leave to our homes. But everybody’s favourite is Saturday! The day dedicated for extracurricular activities. There are many clubs for Music, Dance, Gardening, Math, Drama, Science, Eco, etc… Each student is to pick two clubs and partake in them in the morning. Post lunch we have various sports clubs to participate in. On the whole, Saturdays are packed with play and fun.

Conclusion:

In today’s world, with the hustle and bustle of city life, my school is a wonderful place to learn and grow. It enriches our journey through education by blending in play, fun and nature.

Be a light to be a light – is the touching inscription welcomes all of us at the entrance gate of our school. My school – always filled with a treasure trove of memories, which is the best part of my life. It was indeed a paradise, located in the high ranges of the Western Ghats. Far away from the buzzing urban setting, my school situated amidst lush greenery in a calm and serene atmosphere.

My alma mater did mold me into a responsible citizen and an aspiring individual. It witnessed my metamorphosis from an ignorant toddler into a bold young adult with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. It gifted me with fourteen years of reminiscence to cherish for a lifetime.

Only fond memories – a home away from home:

For me, it was a home away from home. Even the trivial matters about the school became part and parcel of my life. Each classroom that I have sat in had made an indelible mark on my memory. The see-saw in the kids’ park, the class assemblies, physical training classes, lunch break chit chats, art competitions, sports competitions, silly fights with friends, school anniversaries, tight special classes, records, labs, exams… all left deep imprints in my mind.

The most significant part of my school memory revolves around the teachers. They are the incarnation of the divine. They kindle our lives with the bright light of knowledge and help us to imbibe the values to live. We cannot, ignore the contributions of the teachers, as they played a considerable role in molding a student’s life. At first, a student tries to imitate the teacher and gradually makes them the role models.

A teacher plays a vital role in guiding the students to a righteous path. The moral values inherited during school life can last for a lifetime. The way the teachers nurtures and loves the students is heart rendering. We can openly share our anxieties and frustrations with our teachers.

Most teachers were more like best friends. We used to celebrate Teachers Day every year in a grandiose fashion. Our dear teachers always put forth spell spindling performance and enthralled the students with a real visual treat. Their blessings can have a huge influence on anybody’s lives. Even after you go to pursue your higher studies, you can always come back to your school and cherish your good old days. Our teachers are so overwhelmed to see us and are curious to know about our accomplishments.

Besides all these, another best thing about school is our friends. It is the place where any human begins to socialize. You enter into a new realm of social life at school. Hence your acquaintance at school becomes family. As you grow up, the influence of your peer group holds a vital role in your character formation. The hilarious moments with the friends are irreplaceable.

Hence, school life turns out to be a microcosm of the real life wherein you laugh, cry, forgive, forget, interact, react, adjust, learn, teach, observe, take risks, transform and finally evolve into fully fledged individual ready to step out into the complex world.

My school is by a large margin one of the best places to attain formal education. The Environment:

Assimilation becomes difficult when learning is conducted in a toxic environment. Other times, the terrain isn’t toxic but lacks the right appeal to the average student. Student want to be welcomed with the right colours, feel comfortable when they sit or draw inspiration from the general architecture of their school.

My school embodies the above mentioned qualities and more to the smallest of details. The classrooms are decorated with bright colours to cheer up the student’s mood; the playground is designed to relax each student after participating in mentally challenging mind exercise and the general design of the school subconsciously makes every student feel at home.

The Teachers:

Teachers can either make or break any school. Some grumpy, others dull, and then you have those who simply lack the techniques of teaching. While some concepts are easy to learn, other concepts require a teacher who has mastered the art of teaching to drive the point home with each student.

My school possesses experienced teacher who could honestly be motivational speakers when they want to be. They are witty, smart and full of charisma. Also, while they can be playful, they ensure that the message doesn’t get lost. To sum it up, teachers in my school hold themselves to the best moral standards. These values are innocuously instilled in the student while they learn academic concepts.

The Students:

There simply can be no school without the student. No matter how nicely decorated a school is, the quality of its teachers or management, it would all go to waste without bright student flooding the classes on a daily basis.

While abundance of vibrant student can be found at my school, the strength of the student does not lie solely in their numbers. Students at my school make the job of teachers easy. They are attentive in class, pay attention to detail and they have a knack for finishing task in record time.

The conduct of student at my school is second to none. The students are courteous to each other and their superiors. Also, they maintain the highest level of decorum in the classroom and beyond.

All the good things about my school cannot be exhausted in this short article. Also, after all has been said and done, the pertinent question is whether or not I love my school enough to recommend it to others. The answer to this question is definitely in the affirmative.

School is an integral part of everybody’s life. It helps in forming and building the base of child’s future. The students that are genuinely concerned to learn might build healthy practices merely in the schools. In my school, I was educated about the ways through which I can move in the society, progress in my life and behave with others.

My school was quite grand and big. There were three storeys and wonderfully constructed building in the school. It was situated in the middle of my city which was quite close to my home. I used to go there by walking. It was one of the most excellent schools in the entire town in which I was living.

Surroundings of My school:

The site of my school was very quiet as well as pollution free. There were two stairways at both ends that make me reach to each floor. The school was well furnished including a well-instrumented science research laboratory, a big library, as well as one computer laboratory at first floor. There was a school lecture theatre located on the ground floor in which the entire annual meetings and functions take place.

Structure of my school:

The head office, principal offices, staff room, clerk room, and common study room are situated on my school’s ground floor. Moreover, there were the stationery shop, school canteen; skating hall and chess room that were located on the ground floor.

My school possesses two large concreted basketball courts opposite the office of school principal whereas the field of football located at its side. There was a tiny green garden facing the head office. It was full of bright flowers and pretty plants that increase the whole school beauty. During my time, there were around 1600 students at my school. All the students perform quite well in any inter-school competitions.

Standard of education:

The education standards of my school were quite inventive and advanced that benefit me in understanding any difficult subjects quite effortlessly. Our professors explain us everything very genuinely and try to let us know all the things practically. My school always get the first rank in any inter-school cultural activities.

All the significant days of the year like teacher’s day, sports day, parent’s day, anniversary day, children’s day, republic day, founder’s day, Christmas day, independence day, mother’s day, happy new year, annual junction, Mahatma Gandhi birthday, etc., were celebrated in my school in a magnificent way.

My school’s atmosphere was very delightful as there were lots of greenery and scenic beauty. There was a big size garden along with the pool having frog, fish, trees, colorful flowers, green grass, and decorative trees, etc. My school offers the programme’s facility to the students belonging to the class nursery to class 12th. Our school’s principal was very strict regarding hygiene, discipline, and cleanliness.

Other facilities:

Students in my school also get the facility of the bus that helps them in reaching the school from far away places. The entire students used to accumulate in the play area during the morning time for the prayer and then go back to their particular schoolrooms. There were different teachers for the diverse subjects in my school such as Math, P.T., Hindi, English, G.K, Marathi, geography, history, drawing and crafts, science, and many more.

We used to have numerous co-curricular activities in my school like scouting, swimming, N.C.C, skating, school band, dancing, singing, etc. All those students who had prejudiced behavior and do disobedient activities were penalized by the class teacher according to the norms of my school. We also get a small lecture daily from our principal for around 10 minutes regarding the etiquette, character formation, moral education, respecting others and acquiring good values. Thus, I can say that what I am today is only because of my school which is the best school according to me.

I am a proud student of Delhi Public School, Mayapuri. My school is located quite close to my home, at a walking distance of 5 minutes. My school positions high among the composite state-funded schools of Delhi. Late Sh. Ram Gopal, the founder leader of Seth Sagarmal trust is the zenith body behind the establishment of this school. The founder administrator Sh. Ram Gopal was a visionary and a philanthropist and he had a fantasy for giving quality education and great foundation with the goal that the kids from the cross segment of the general public could get great training and turn into the respectable nationals of the nation. His fantasy was acknowledged when Delhi Public School, Mayapuri was built up in the year 1991 and spread over 4 acres of land. He used to tell during the assembly meetings that this school has been set up with a mission to give quality training gelled with moral qualities and has the vision to encourage and develop the intellectual and creative abilities in us. Our teachers at Delhi Public School plan to make a solid society by giving comprehensive training keeping in view the changing patterns in worldwide instruction and guide us accordingly.

Infrastructure:

My school is situated on a plot of 4 acres of land out of which 2 acres of land is for the building and remaining 2 acres of land is for the playground and other open-air exercises. Other than brilliant class empowered classrooms, my school building contains the accompanying Lab (Language, General Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Computers), Library, Multipurpose Hall, Music, Dance and Drama Room, Workmanship Room, Sports Room, Yoga Room, Hospital/Medical Room regulated by full time qualified specialist and helped by an attendant and Staff Rooms (separate staff spaces for various dimension of educators). My school transport has 6 different routes which cover nearly most of Delhi making it convenient for students from all areas to reach the school on time.

The Atmosphere of My School:

The atmosphere of my school is superb with bunches of natural greenery and scenery. There is a vast ground surrounded by beautiful trees and full of green grass for us to play during our PT periods. Different things like an enormous playground, vast open spaces all around the school give my school a characteristic marvel. There is an office of cricket net, basketball court and skating ground too. My school pursues CBSE board standards. My school gives the education to students of all caste and creed from nursery to twelfth class. My school principal is extremely strict about school control, cleanliness and neatness.

Academic Activities in My School:

The academic norms of my school are exceptionally inventive and imaginative which enables us to understand any difficult issue effortlessly. Our teachers show us earnestly and let us know everything essentially. My school positions first in any program like between school social interests and sports exercises. In my school we celebrate all important days and events of the year such as Sports Day, Teacher’s Day, Parents’ Day, Children’s Day, School Anniversary Day, Founder’s Day, Republic Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day, Mother’s Day, Annual capacity, Happy New Year, Mahatma Gandhi Birthday, and so on in a fabulous way.

We take part in the co-curricular exercises, for example, swimming, exploring, N.C.C., school band, skating, singing, moving, and so on. Students having unjustifiable conduct and unrestrained exercises are punished by the class educator according to the school standards. Our in charge ma’am takes classes of each student occasionally in the gathering corridor for 10 minutes to manage our character, behaviour, moral instruction, gaining great qualities and regarding others. Our educational time is exceptionally fascinating and charming as we do lots of inventive and useful works with the help of our teachers.

Why I Worship My School?

My school resembles a temple where we go every day, appeal to God and study for 6 hours every day. My teacher is exceptionally decent and understanding. My school has strict standards of study, cleanliness and uniform. I just enjoy going to school every day as my mom says that it is exceptionally important to go to class daily and study. This is very important for my bright future and my journey towards becoming a good human being. My School is a temple of realizing where we are creatively engaged through the learning procedure. We learn different things too with our examination like control, conduct, act well, reliability and a lot more manners. In this way, my school is the best school in the world.

We all have many sweet and sour memories of our school. Many of us complete our school education from one school but some students like me have to change more than a few schools. School leaves a great impact on our minds. It affects our way of thinking and teaches us to live in the outside world. No wonder it is called the second home of a child.

I too admire my school. Although it has also been two years since I started studying here, there are many kinds of emotions I have developed for my current school. Basically, I belong to the colorful state of Rajasthan. But due to some family reasons, I had to come to Bhubaneswar. It is the capital city of the state of Orissa.

Early Days at My School:

I started my studies here as a student of standard 7. Clearly, there were many cultural differences between my past school and this one. The language, the climate, the food, and the ways of interaction, everything was different here. For the first few months, it was hard for me to adjust in a completely new environment. But slowly, it started to feel familiar.

The Atmosphere:

My classmates and subject teachers have been very supportive. It’s a co-ed school that means both girls and boys sit together and interact with each other frankly. Our school has a great building. It is situated at the heart of the city, away from the residential areas of the town. We go to school by bus.

Teachers at my school come from different parts of the country. My English teacher is a south-Indian whereas my science teacher is a highly reputed lady who came from America and settled in India a few years ago. She is a visiting faculty and teaches us out of her passion for the teaching job.

The students in my school belong to different types of families. Some are from a very simple family. And some are from highly reputed and educated families. For example, the parents of one of my classmates are scientists and parents of another classmate are lecturers. But all the students are treated equally in my school and this is what makes me really proud of my school.

Our School Campus:

My school has a three-floor building. All the classrooms here are large and well-maintained. They are always clean. Huge windows in the class allow sufficient sunlight into the rooms. In summers, we also use the air conditioning in the school as the climate here is quite hot and humid.

We also have a huge playground in the school where our daily assembly and all the other activities take place. In the morning assembly, everything is organized by the students only. From playing the instruments to reading the news and helping students make a line to their classrooms, students take care of all the tasks.

What I Enjoy the Most at My School:

It is a day-boarding school. So, all the children get their breakfast and lunch from the school mess itself. The meals served here is hot and fresh. You can get extra servings as many times as you like. Although in the beginning, it was new to my taste buds, I started to like the Oriya cuisine very soon.

There are many extra-curricular activities taught to the students here. To name some, we have a traditional Oriya dance class. Then, there are self-defense classes and an additional class to learn a foreign language of your choice.

Discipline and Conduct:

Discipline and cleanliness form a great part of my school culture. Every day, the seniors form a group for hygiene checking of the juniors. The responsibility of each senior student is fixed. From the shoes to nails and clean dress, everything is checked properly.

The classes in my school start from play way and up to standard 10. Sincerity and punctuality are the key habits of my school. Even the teachers and kids from the lower classes come to school on time and follow every rule.

Once we get inside the school premises, it is not allowed for us to talk in our mother tongue. All the students have to talk to each other in English. And the rules about it are very strict. Though it may sound a severe rule, it has improved our spoken English in a great way.

Extra-curricular Activities:

Our principal likes discipline but she also shows us a lot of affection and warmth. The students can directly go to her for sharing their problems. She also makes sure that we enjoy the teaching of our teachers and not get bored. That is why occasional trips are arranged for us to explore the nearby cities, which I enjoy a lot.

I also look forward to the annual sports day organized at my school. There are so many sports activities to cheer us up and keep our mind and body healthy. I also participate in the annual functions of my school. It is organized at the biggest auditorium in Bhubaneswar. We practice for several days before the final performance on the stage.

My Sweet Memories at the School:

Last year, my classmates and juniors made my birthday so special. My desk was filled with gifts and greeting cards. They showered me with so much love and affection. When I was new here, all my classmates were very helpful and made it easy for me to settle here without much of a problem.

They are also kind enough to teach me their local language ‘Oriya’. With time, I have learned to read and write the basic words and sentences in the language. Our school also introduced us to the habit of writing and sharing letters with our pen-pals.

My school has taught me many valuable such as to help others, to not make fun of others, respecting the elders and loving the young ones. Over time, I have collected many precious memories here and feel grateful to God for allowing me such a rich learning environment.

I would always love my school and no matter where I go, I will always be proud of it all my life.

I wasn’t anxious about back-to-school because of my kids. It was the other moms

As the summer drew to a close, I felt the usual anxiety rise up inside me. And it wasn’t just because of the whirlwind of back-to-school duties I’d now have to complete. It was because I’d be around those have-it-all-together perfect mom types.  

I’d been free of them for two glorious months, and it was heaven.

I knew I shouldn’t judge them. It was hard enough being judged by society for everything we did: working, not working, helicopter, free-range — our every move evaluated with such intensity. It was maddening. I hated myself for resenting them. But I did.

It wasn’t just their sideways glances and passive-aggressive comments directed at me because I’d missed a school email about pajama day or a donation for the PTA that made me feel like I was failing as a mother. Nor the times I’d run into them at the bus stop with their sparkling white teeth holding a container of cut-up fruits for the teacher’s breakfast, flanked by their kids in matching outfits, their hair done like they just stepped out of a salon.

No, it was their very existence. The way they made it look so easy, so natural, so right. While I struggled to do it all — to be a good mother, wife, daughter, friend … but kept falling short of every single one. I couldn’t seem to do anything the way I thought I should. 

I savored those summer days where I didn’t have to walk into school with my hair in its usual messy bun and Target yoga pants I’d never used for actual yoga, only to run into one of them carrying homemade gluten and nut-free vegan cupcakes for my son’s class.

And instead of being grateful for her effort and happy my son had a classmate whose mom cared about his class, I resented her, stewing in my own feelings of inadequacy. 

As the days to the start of school crept closer, my panic set in. I knew I’d have to shake myself out of my schedule-free daze and deal with my to-do list, which was getting longer than a CVS receipt. And my inbox, which was filling up each day with more forms, notes, reminders and obligations.  

Despite my efforts to will it not to, the first day of school inevitably arrived. And as much as I tried to prepare for the stress and stave off my insecurities, they still came flooding back.  

I rushed the kids out of bed and hustled them to the bus stop. That’s when I saw the first one. She was standing there in her full glory, looking fresh and ready, with her kids by her side. I smiled and waved, trying my best to push down the green monster raging inside me. She had everything organized and was happy to chat with me about it.  

“Hey, how was your summer? By the way, I signed up to be class mom for our kids’ class. Have you signed up for any of the volunteer stuff yet?” she asked.  

“Umm, not … yet. I’ll have to take a look,” I said, as I noticed that my kids were chasing each other up and down the sidewalk. “Guys, stop. The bus is almost here,” I said through clenched teeth, embarrassed that they weren’t as well behaved as her children, who were quietly standing by her side.

She shared that her son and daughter had been reading high school level books for fun and doing math problems during dinner. I’m pretty sure my kids hadn’t done a single math problem the whole summer. 

I forced a smile as I tried to push down the bile rising in my throat. As I looked at her kids’ faces and their adorable new outfits with equally sweet backpacks, she’s a good  mom, you’re a bad mom , kept swirling in my head.

Watching her put her arm around her daughter as she looked down the street to see where the bus was, I thought back to our morning. I’d woken up later than I’d planned, yelled up the stairs for the kids to get ready, then stuffed string cheese, crackers and might-have-expired granola bars into their banged-up lunch boxes. Once they finally got downstairs with their mismatched outfits, I rushed them out the door, desperately hoping we wouldn’t miss the bus. 

When it finally came, Good Mom bent down, brushed a stray hair behind her daughter’s ear and tightened her son’s shoelace before hugging and kissing them both goodbye. Distracted by the picture-perfect scene, I missed my own kids getting on the bus. No hug, no kiss, no tightening of shoelaces. Just the smoke from the exhaust as the bus left.

Good Mom and I stood and waved to our kids as we watched the bus get smaller down the tree-lined road. Then she bid me farewell as she dashed off to her SoulCycle class in a spanking new matching Lululemon outfit. I waved, boiling inside, hating myself for being so jealous of her … everything. 

After the parents dispersed, I sat on the worn wooden bench under the maple tree, my body still buzzing with the adrenaline of the first morning routine and my bad mom baggage. 

Looking down the empty street, with only the rumbling of an engine in the distance and the chirping of birds overhead, something inside of me snapped. I slumped over, holding my head in my hands as a sound came out of my mouth I didn’t recognize. It was like a desperate pain leaving my body, a combination of a cry and a whimper. I felt tears filling my eyes.

What are you doing , I thought. Why do I let myself get twisted up in the senseless comparisons year after year? Why do side glances of other moms and their seemingly perfect parenting break me so easily? 

“Stop it.” The words came tumbling out. I said them again, this time louder. “Stop it!” I could hear my breath going in and out of my nose as I looked around to make sure I was still alone.

My body felt like an empty sack, worn and depleted. Stop doing to yourself and to those other moms what society does to so many mothers, I told myself. Judging, comparing, scrutinizing. It’s none of your business what they do or don’t do. You don’t know their life, their pain, their stories. You have no idea what they’re going through behind those shiny surfaces. 

Then it hit me, like a hard snowball to the face. Instead of thinking about my kids, I’d spent the entire morning twisted up in my own dark self-doubts. I’d lost those precious moments with them — the excitement of the first day of school, their joy as they ran around with each other, their scramble to find their favorite seats when they got on the bus.

Did they look at me through the window to give me a toothy smile? I was so distracted by my obsession with another woman’s life that I missed my own children’s sweet faces as they left me to go out into the world. And this wasn’t the only moment I’d lost. If I was being honest, I’d wasted countless hours, days and weeks comparing myself to other moms, hate-scrolling through snapshots of their seemingly happy lives on social media, and being hurt by slights that shouldn’t have taken my attention away from my family. 

As I watched the leaves swaying with the light morning gust, tears rolled down my face as my sorrow rose inside me. 

I said it one more time, but now in a whisper. “Stop it.”

Walking home in my pajama pants and stretched out T-shirt, I felt a heaviness in my chest and a mountain of regret I didn’t know how to digest.

Then as soon as I opened the front door and saw the line of little shoes tattered from running around in parks and playgrounds, I knew things would have to change. 

So, I made myself a promise. That I would find a way to be kinder to myself and other women as we navigated this complicated, overwhelming and beautiful thing called motherhood. That no matter how hard things got, I’d fight against my feelings of inadequacy and not-good-enoughness, and instead of giving in to those doubts, I’d fill those moments with grace, for myself and others.

I can’t say that I’ve kept that promise every day, but I have kept it more days than not. And that’s something good. Something that’s helped me find peace, gratitude and love as I continue to navigate the incredible privilege of being a mother.

In 1994, two-and-a-half years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia was facing a continuous onslaught of troubles as it entered a new era in its history. Though I noticed new changes during the course of my scheduled activities, I wanted to feel them directly, firsthand.

"Let's go for a walk," I told my wife and the others in my party, and we stepped outside.

Along the western wall of the Kremlin is an expanse of green called Alexandrovsky Garden. There, trees and tulips, moistened by the recent spring rain, bathed themselves joyfully in the soft sunlight.

Someone once told me: "In Moscow, the winters are very long. You still have to wear an overcoat in April. So May is a truly pleasant time for Muscovites, a season everyone dearly looks forward to."

Trees, flowers and blades of grass, turning to the eagerly awaited sunlight, seemed all at once to put forth the flame of life. Just as the people were invigorated by their newly gained freedom, the Moscow spring glowed with vibrant energy.

That winter had been particularly harsh. Society's tumult had made it hard for people to obtain needed goods, and I had worried that many might not survive the season.

Exchanging greetings with passersby in the park, I sensed the robustness of the Russian people. In this society with an uncertain future, people were smiling and seemed confident and composed.

It may take several decades for Russia to overcome her present chaos. But because of the strength and energy of her people, I am absolutely confident that this present Russian "winter" will turn into spring.

On the northern edge of the park stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It bears the inscription "Your name is unknown, your deeds, immortal."

During World War II, some 20 million Soviet citizens perished--the largest human sacrifice of any combatant nation. A Russian song someone once taught me goes:

Ask if the Russian people want war! Ask the vast land, The birch forests, And the soldiers lying asleep forever beneath the trees. Ask if the Russian people want war! Ask the Russian mothers, Wives who have lost their husbands on the battlefield, Children who have lost their fathers . . .

No national border or social system can contain this outcry of the human spirit. If one could gather and concentrate this cry of humanity, one could lay siege to and destroy war itself.

When I visited the Soviet Union in the midst of the Cold War, I was criticized for doing so. How could I go to such a place, people complained. But I dared to go, to advance even a single step the cause of human friendship. "I am going because there are people there," is the answer I gave my critics.

Twenty years had passed since then. I once again offered solemn prayers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where I had placed flowers during my first visit to the Soviet Union. Nearby was a group of elementary school children, who had come to the park for a school outing. I had a pleasant talk with them, enjoying their carefree smiles. I told them, "When you are bigger, please come and visit Japan," and their cute voices rang with joyful excitement.

The Soviet Union has disappeared, but the people live on. Humanity endures. The children survive. Politics have changed; the economy has been transformed; but the workings of human life continue, unchanged.

The color green is the color of life, the color of hope, and the color of peace. Green is the color of the twenty-first century.

In the Russian language, the word for Earth and peace is the same- -mir . Beyond a nearby stand of trees, I heard the voices of other children. Looking, I saw these youngsters playing happily, framed by an arch of green. Aiming my camera at this simple, peaceful scene, I clicked the shutter.

On Culture War, Doug Wilson, and the Moscow Mood

“Each of the great world civilizations,” Christopher Dawson wrote in his classic work from the 1940s on  Religion and the Rise of Western Culture , “has been faced with the problem of reconciling the aggressive ethos of the warrior with the moral ideals of a universal religion. But in none of them has the tension been so vital and intense as in medieval Christendom and nowhere have the results been more important for the history of culture.” At the heart of Dawson’s provocative thesis is the insistence that Western European culture was the coming together of two cultures, two social traditions, and two spiritual worlds. The cultural formation of Europe combined “the war society of the barbarian kingdom with its cult of heroism and aggression,” leavened by “the peace society of the Christian Church with its ideals of asceticism and renunciation and its high theological culture.” 

Arguably, the Crusades expressed the best and the worst of this synthesis. There were times when the fusion of warrior-heroism and Christian virtue produced something noble and exemplary during the centuries-long effort to reclaim the Holy Land. And there were times when the fusion failed and produced something ugly and lamentable. But even the failures teach us about the aspirational ideals of Christendom. We cannot understand the rise of Western culture without the religious unity imposed by the Christian Church in the Middle Ages, and likewise, we cannot understand the flourishing of Christendom unless we understand that it grew up out of the soil of warrior kings and barbarian kingdoms.

Dawson’s thesis, though concerned with the rise of Western culture in the Middle Ages, is instructive for our own age. For many of us, it looks as if Western culture has been overrun—whether by Muslim immigration in Europe, critical theory in our universities, sexual degradation in our popular culture, violence in our streets, or plain old anti-Western vitriol in the hearts of many Westerners who have no idea how much more miserable the world would be if their deluded wishes came true. If this is the world we live in—or even something generally headed in this fearful direction—the question we in the Christian West are wrestling with (or should be wrestling with) is what to do now.

The Appeal of the Moscow Mood

Which brings me to the reason you are likely reading this article in the first place, and that is the name “Doug Wilson” in the title. “So, what do you think about Doug Wilson?” is a question I’ve been asked many times during my years in pastoral ministry. I’d say the questioners have been pretty evenly split between “I’m asking because I really like him,” “I’m asking because I hope you don’t like him,” and “I’m asking because I’m not sure what to think.” Even now, I’d rather not be writing this piece because (1) it takes a lot of time, (2) I’m not looking to get into a long, drawn-out debate with Wilson or his followers, and (3) I know a lot of good Christians who have been helped by Wilson and by the people and institutions in his orbit. I’m answering the question now in hopes that I might help those who appreciate some of what Wilson says but also feel like something isn’t quite right.

By any measure, one has to marvel at the literary, digital, and institutional output that has come out of Moscow, Idaho in the past several decades. While some internet cranks are wannabees trying to make a name for themselves by trying to tear down what others have built up, Wilson is to be commended for establishing an ecosystem of schools, churches, media offerings, and publishing ventures. For a scholarly and fair assessment of what Wilson has tried to do in Moscow, I recommend Crawford Gribben’s excellent book  Survival and Resistance in Evangelical America: Christian Reconstruction in the Pacific Northwest  (Oxford University Press, 2021).

Wilson also deserves credit for being unafraid to take unpopular positions. True, he often seems to enjoy stating his unpopular positions in the most unpopular ways (more on that later), but no one is going to accuse Wilson of being a spineless  Evangellyfish . He offers the world and the church an angular, muscular, forthright Christianity in an age of compromise and defection. On top of that, Wilson has a family that loves him and loves Christ.

Moreover, Wilson understands that opposition to Christ—his word, his gospel, and his Lordship—is not to be taken lightly. Many Christians are witnessing the disintegration of our Western world, and the Christian consensus that used to hold sway, and they are thinking to themselves, “This is terrible. I can’t believe this is happening.” To the Christians with these concerns—and I count myself among them—Doug Wilson says, “Yes, it is really bad, and let’s do something about it.”

I’m convinced the appeal of Moscow is visceral more than intellectual. That’s not meant to be a knock on the smart people in Moscow or attracted to Moscow. It is to say, however, that people are not mainly moving to Idaho because they now understand Revelation 20 in a different way, or because they did a deep word study on  ta ethne  in the Great Commission, or even because of a well-thought-out political philosophy of Christian Nationalism. Those things matter to Wilson and his followers, but I believe postmillennialism and Christian Nationalism are lagging indicators, not leading indicators. That is, people come to those particular intellectual convictions because they were first attracted to the cultural aesthetic and the political posture that Wilson so skillfully embodies. In short, people are moving to Moscow—whether literally or spiritually—because of a  mood . It’s a mood that says, “We are not giving up, and we are not giving in. We can do better than negotiate the terms of our surrender. The infidels have taken over our Christian laws, our Christian heritage, and our Christian lands, and we are coming to take them back.”

Where the Mood Misfires

And yet, for all that is understandable and sometimes commendable about the Moscow mood, there are also serious problems. In my criticisms that follow I’m not going to focus on historical or theological disagreements I may have with Wilson. I won’t be touching on Federal Vision, or paedocommunion, or his views on the antebellum South, or his arguments for Christian Nationalism, or his particular brand of postmillennialism. My concerns are not so much with one or two conclusions that Christians may reach if Wilson becomes their intellectual mentor. My bigger concern is with the long-term spiritual effects of admiring and imitating the Moscow mood. For the mood that attracts people to Moscow is too often incompatible with Christian virtue, inconsiderate of other Christians, and ultimately inconsistent with the stated aims of Wilson’s Christendom project. 

Rather than expounding these claims in abstract terms, let’s look at a couple of concrete examples.

Five years ago, Doug Wilson and Canon Press started something they call No Quarter November (NQN). The idea is that during November, in addition to giving away free resources, Wilson and his crew will show no mercy (give no quarter) to their enemies. Each year, in advance of NQN, Wilson puts out a promotional video. They always involve a good deal of fire and more than a little sarcasm. 

The  2023 NQN video  ends with a Clint Eastwood-style closeup of Wilson puffing a massive cigar, strapping on a giant flamethrower, and setting ablaze an assortment of Disney characters and media logos. Here’s what Wilson says in the first half of the video:

Welcome back to No Quarter November. 

For eleven months out of the year, I'm notoriously timid—as cautious and polite as a Southern Baptist raising funds for the ERLC. But the month of November is a time for taking no prisoners and for granting “no quarter.” If you think of my blog as a shotgun, this is the month when I saw off all my typical careful qualifications and blast away with a double-barreled shorty.

Everything we do this month will be focused on one singular goal. We want to help you apocalypse-proof your family. 

But why should you listen to me about such things? Well, when it comes to culture war and culture building, we've been at this for half a century now—much longer than such things have been cool to talk about in the green room at G3. 

Like my parents taught me: a strong family isn't possible without quick, full, and honest confession of sin, without any wussy excuse making. And especially now, it's just as important not to confess and repent of things that aren't really sins, because lying is bad and so is being a wuss.

You really should watch the four-minute video if you haven’t already. Notice several things about the mood.

First, it strikes a tone that is deliberately sarcastic and just a little bit naughty. No one really thinks Wilson is timid and cautious the rest of the year. That’s the sarcasm. The naughty part is that Wilson uses the words “wussy” and “wuss”—adolescent slang for someone weak and effeminate. These are words most Christian parents don’t allow their kids to use, since the terms probably originated as a combination of “wimp” and another word I won’t mention.

Second, the video takes cheap shots at other Christians. Wilson’s sarcastic bite is not first directed toward the wicked, the hardhearted, or the forces of evil in our world. He takes a swipe at the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission and at the G3 Conference. Both are conservative Baptist groups—groups, we might add, that would be on the same side as Wilson in almost every important cultural battle. It’s fine if Wilson wants to disagree with these groups; they’ve disagreed with him at times. But Wilson doesn’t mention them in the video in order to make a serious argument. He uses them for a punchline. If you like Wilson you are supposed to think “Oh no, he didn’t?! That’s hilarious.” And if you like the ERLC or G3, you are supposed to be triggered, because if Moscow can watch their opponents get triggered, that is also funny. When serious criticism is leveled at Moscow, the response often includes a smattering of mockery and memes. This isn’t Wilson using his famous “serrated edge” to make a prophetic point against a godless culture. This is intentionally making fun of other Christians for a quick chuckle.

Third, the point of NQN is explicitly about culture warring and culture building. Rightly understood, it is good to do both these things. But it is instructive to see that Wilson’s stated aim is to “help you apocalypse-proof your home.” I think it’s safe to say this is what Wilson aims to do not just in November (in an intensified fashion), but during the other eleven months of the year, and in Wilson’s mind preparing for the apocalypse means doing battle against the forces of leftism in our world. Wilson’s public persona is largely about commenting on the culture, pushing back on the culture, lampooning the culture, and getting Christians ready for the coming cultural collapse.

Fourth, the video is squarely focused on Wilson himself. On one level, this is not surprising. Christian institutions and organizations often use their founder, president, or leading voice as the “face” of the ministry. But the focus here is not on Wilson as the conduit of biblical teaching and doctrinal truth, or even as the instrument of helpful cultural analysis. The focus is on Wilson himself—Wilson as rebel, Wilson as gunslinger, Wilson as taboo-breaking cigar smoker, Wilson as the courageous hero we need in a crazy world like ours. No Quarter November is selling a carefully cultivated personality and image—Wilson’s personality and Wilson’s image.

Like most well-produced pieces of entertainment, the NQN video is not trying to make a syllogistic argument. The video excels at putting off a  vibe . And what is that vibe? It’s a vibe that communicates, “Join us if you want to get into a shootout with the culture, join us if you want to poke fun at all the limp-wristed Christians out there, join us if you want to be like Doug Wilson in trolling other people and setting things on fire.” 

Wilson’s approach depends on a fundamentally oppositional framework. The Moscow mood provides a non-stop adversarial stance toward the world and toward other Christians who are deemed (or caricatured to be) too afraid to “tell it like it is.” Moscow cannot become the  American Redoubt  for conservative Christians if it is too similar to other places, with basically the same kinds of churches, schools, and institutions found in hundreds of other cities. Differentiation is key, and this can only be sustained by a mood of antagonism and sharp antithesis. In keeping with the spirit of the age, Wilson shares the rhetorical instinct that has come to dominate our politics and political punditry: a negative partisanship that builds a following by exposing the impurity of the other side, even if sometimes the other “side” shares almost all of your own positions. The strategy is not to link arms with other networks, but to punch hard and punch often, all the while forging an unbreakable loyalty to the one who is perceived as the Outsider-Disruptor. And that means always meme-ing his critics, always tweaking his opponents, and never (that I’ve seen) cultivating a broken-hearted and courageous contrition for the remaining sinfulness in our own hearts (Ps. 51:17).

Setting Things on Fire as the World Burns

We can look at the  2021 NQN video  for a second example. Here’s what Wilson says:

Welcome to No Quarter November. 

My name is Douglas Wilson. I'm glad you decided to join us. Now, some people want to know what is it about November that makes us want to burn things? What's with that?

[Wilson takes a swig from a bottle of liquor] There’s a little libation for those evangelicals who think I ought not to be drinking stuff like that. 

The reason, the reason we're doing this is not that we think that there's a moral obligation that we have to be incendiary, because we don't have a moral obligation to be incendiary. What we're saying is that the world has mysteriously, for some bizarre reason, become flammable. 

So the world is flammable. Everything catches fire these days. All you have to do is say something like “white babies” or something like “men shouldn't have sex with unstable women”—things that would have gone past without comment in a saner time. But we don't live in a sane time. 

We're not incendiary people here at Canon Press. We are ordinary people, normal people in a flammable time. And that explains why things burn in November. . . . If it seems like everything’s gone nuts, if it seems like the world's on fire, just keep doing what you’re supposed to be doing, just stay with whatever your plans were. Keep doing what you ought to be doing. Stay at your post. Ignore the world.

The video is vintage Wilson—excellent production value, savvy, clever, and playful, yet cutting, edgy, and provocative. This video from 2021 has the same vibe as the current video from 2023, so I won’t repeat the same points. But let me make one further observation.

Wilson says that at Canon Press they don’t try to set things on fire. The world is flammable, the video intones, and they are just trying to mind their own business. This is demonstrably not true. In most of the videos, Wilson gleefully and triumphantly sets things on fire. No Quarter November is about everything  except  minding their own business. Why else do we see Wilson conspicuously drinking hard liquor and smoking a cigar? Wilson knows what he’s doing. He’s picking a fight and tweaking other Christians just because he can. He telegraphs this intent with his comment about “a little libation” for those tee-totaling evangelicals.

The supposed point of the 2021 video is that we should ignore the world, tell the truth, and let the world explode if it wants to. But that’s not what the video communicates in effect, nor what NQN, or the focus of Wilson’s whole ministry, is trying to accomplish. No Quarter November does not give us a month of posts on the loveliness of Christ, or the power of prayer, or the finer points of Reformed soteriology, or the wonders of the cross, or the total trustworthiness of the Bible, or the holiness of God, or the glorious intricacies of trinitarian theology. The month is largely about speaking into a host of hot-button cultural issues. Yes, the world is extremely flammable these days. But Wilson also enjoys striking a match. When he makes references to “white babies” or not having sex “with unstable women,” he is not trying to douse the cultural fire around us. He is trying to fan the flames, and usually with a swagger and a self-parading gleefulness. Later he will come back with nuance and qualification once the conflagration—much to his delight—is already out of control. Wilson excels at the  motte and bailey approach : make an outrageous statement that fires up the internet, and then when pressed, retreat to a milder version of the same statement, all without ever giving up the original statement.

Wilson instructs the viewer that “if it seems like the world is on fire, just keep doing what you’re doing.” But that’s not what Wilson’s brand is about. His videos are visually and thematically about setting things on fire. They are about poking people in the eye. I’m all for cultural engagement, even for some culture warring rightly understood. But Wilson’s online persona is not about introducing Reformed creeds and confessions, or about explaining the books of the Bible, or about global mission to the uttermost parts of the earth, or about liturgy, preaching, prayer, and the ordinary means of grace. I’m sure Wilson cares about all those things, but that’s not what No Quarter November and his self-promotional trailers are selling. By and large, it’s not what the other eleven months of videos and tweets and memes and blog posts are selling either. Wilson may be a happy warrior, but it is easier to spot his happiness in the war itself than in the things he claims to be fighting for. We could do with fewer witticisms front and center, and more conspicuous delighting in the sweetness of fellowship with Christ and exulting in the love of God our Savior. And if Wilson and Canon Press believe that their bread and butter really is about all the things I listed a few sentences ago—creeds, confessions, the Bible, missions, the ordinary means of grace—I’d love to see them devote an entire month (hey, why not a whole year) to  just  those things, without any snark, without any sarcasm, and without any trolling of other Christians. 

We must never forget that no matter how important Western civilization may be, we are still sojourners and exiles in the world (1 Pet. 2:11). The most important fight is the fight for faith, not the fight for Christendom. The Christian life must be shaped by the theology of the cross, however much we might prefer an ever-present theology of glory. That means blessing through persecution, strength through weakness, and life through death. “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come” (Heb. 13:14). If we want God to be unashamed to be called our God, our desire must be for a better country, that is, a heavenly one (Heb. 11:16).

The Mood Is the Message

I don’t doubt that many Christians are helped by the resources put out by Wilson and Canon Press. I have many friends who love Wilson’s stuff on the family, the church, and classical Christian education. I often agree with what Wilson says—especially in what he critiques about our present age. I may not agree with what Wilson means by Christendom or Christian Nationalism, but I too would like to see more Christian influence in our land and a return to many of the ideas and ideals that have made Western Civilization truly great. If you are a mature, grounded Christian in a good church, with a good sense of discernment, you can find a number of helpful things from the world of Moscow.

But there’s a difference between snacking on Moscow once you are already full of good Christian discipleship and feasting on Moscow for three square meals a day. I fear that much of the appeal of Moscow is an appeal to what is worldly in us. As we’ve seen, the mood is often irreverent, rebellious, and full of devil-may-care playground taunts. That doesn’t make us better Christians. 

The well-worn critique of the seeker-sensitive movement is apt for the Moscow mood as well:  What you win them with is what you win them to . And with so many of Wilson’s videos and blogs, what he’s winning an audience with is a spirit of derision, cavalier repartee, and the drinking down of liberal tears. Pugnacity and jocularity are not the occasional and unfortunate by-products of the brand; they  are  the brand.

Even more troubling is Wilson’s deliberate decision to use uncouth (at best) and sinful (at worst) language, especially language of a sexual nature. His own denomination has criticized his unnecessarily provocative language, including the use of phrases like “small breasted biddies” and “lumberjack dykes.” At other times he’s used (without the asterisks I’ve inserted) words like d*ck , c*ck , c*nt , a** , b**bs (also here , here , here , and here ), t*ts , b*tch (also here and here ), gaytards , fa**ot, fudgepackers [for male sex], and circle jerks [a term I had to look up, but I wish I hadn’t]. To my knowledge, Wilson has not expressed regret or repentance for this language; to the contrary, he has often defended its use.

Were I to use these words in public (or in private) I would be quickly confronted by my elders and likely brought before my presbytery for questioning. If I persisted, I would probably be deposed as a minister. And rightly so, for such language constitutes filthiness, foolish talk, and crude joking (Eph. 5:4). Which of the Puritans, or Southern Presbyterians for that matter, would have dared to speak this way? What candidate coming forward for ordination could get away with writing in this way? What parent would be thrilled if their daughter’s new boyfriend sprinkled his vocabulary with words like these? If such “prophetic” language is justified for the minister when he is attacking a godless culture, is the language therefore appropriate in the pulpit? According to Wilson’s logic, I don’t see why not. And should we hope to see more pastors employ these terms? Would that be a step toward the saving of Christendom, for Christian ministers to talk more frequently about b**bs and t*ts? In his influential thirteenth-century manual on the training of knights, Ramon Llull insisted that “Courtesy and Chivalry belong together, for baseness and uncouth words are contrary to Chivalry.”

Wilson has frequently compared PCA study committees to a  “stacked. . . blonde in a tight dress”  (also  here  and  here ). Once he wrote that a committee was  “as stacked as Dolly Parton  after  her new implants.”  There is no excuse for this language. To be sure, the prophet Ezekiel could use extreme language in extreme situations to show the ugliness of extreme wickedness. Likening a study committee of a confessionally Reformed denomination to Dolly Parton’s anatomy is none of these things. It’s juvenile, sensuous, and entirely without biblical warrant. This isn’t using graphic language to highlight the horror of sin; it’s a bawdy way to make fun of a group of orthodox churchmen with whom Wilson disagrees. Wilson likes to emphasize that if Christ is Lord, he must be Lord of all. Yes and Amen. But “all” means our hearts, our minds,  and  our typing fingers.

So much of what Wilson produces online strikes me as showmanship. It’s like that famous quip from James Denney that is impossible to make ourselves look clever while also proclaiming that Christ is mighty to save. If Rick Warren did videos like NQN—granted, they would have a much different vibe—the same people that love Wilson’s gimmicks would almost certainly lampoon a hyped-up, dressed-up Rick Warren close-up as self-serving cringe. At the time of this writing, you can purchase from Canon Press a limited edition No Quarter November flag for $59.99 and an NQN Special Reserve Edition Flamethrower for $1,943.

Like Doug Wilson, I love P.G. Wodehouse. His witty use of the English language is without equal. Wodehouse wrote like a trapeze artist engaged in verbal flips and death-defying metaphors—and somehow, he always stuck the landing. I can see how Wilson takes his cues from Wodehouse. Except that with Wodehouse, there was nothing at stake. He was a humorist first and foremost. The point was to dazzle with his words, while poking gentle fun at aristocratic England. But Wilson wants us to believe that the stakes could not be higher. The barbarians have breached the castle wall. The Western world is crumbling. We are engaged in a war. The apocalypse is drawing nigh. 

At the same time, Wilson’s online persona is almost always Wodehousian fun and games. So, in one video, where New Saint Andrews (Wilson’s college) tries to make an important point about the wickedness of contemporary culture, the narrator interjects with a mocking, “Hey, Wokey McWokeface.” It’s not being the “tone police” to say that this kind of insult is silly, unnecessary, and ultimately undermines the seriousness of the issue they are trying to address. Which is it—are we in the trenches against the enemy, or hosting our own late night talk show? Ironically, for all that Wilson says and writes about manhood, his online tone is often juvenile. Petty insults and childish putdowns do not display the  manly virtue of magnanimity —the loftiness of spirit that enables one to bear trouble calmly, to disdain meanness, and to display a noble generosity. 

A More Excellent Way

I’m a fan of good satire. John Witherspoon used it to great effect against eighteenth-century Moderates in the Church of Scotland. Sarcasm can be a holy weapon in the Lord’s army (see Elijah on Mount Carmel). But sarcasm and satire by the minister are best used sparingly and against those whose hearts are set against the truth. But Wilson makes fun of those who could be allies and loves to troll people who disagree with him. It’s as if all the world is a meme war to be won, and no publicity is bad publicity so long as people are paying attention to Wilson and Canon Press. I suppose I’ve taken the bait by writing this essay.

One of the sad realities is that Wilson  could  set a different mood—still full of Chestertonian mirth, but focused on better things and in a better way. After Rachel Held Evans—the progressive Christian writer and scathing critic of Wilson—sadly passed away at only 37 years old, Wilson wrote a  moving article  full of sympathy and grace. He showed genuine pastoral sensitivity, without giving away an inch of theological ground.

Wilson knows how to strike that tone—wise, gracious, resolute, and (dare I say) winsome. One can only conclude that he prefers to write in a different way. Wilson could keep all the good stuff on classical Christian education, all the helpful material on family formation, all the countercultural advice on being old school men and women. He could explain the Bible. He could highlight heroes from church history. He could blog about the Great Books. He could work to maximize what he shares in common with other conservative Christian leaders and networks. Christians could be drawn to Wilson because he shows them more of Christ rather than more of Christendom. That’s one viable approach.

But he would have to dial back—way back—the sarcasm. He would have to decrease so that Christ can increase. He would have to press pause on the perpetual pot-stirring. He would have to cultivate a depth of intellectual exploration that is more lasting, and ultimately more helpful, than a surface-level spray into the controversy  du jour . He would have to refrain from keeping his pointer finger permanently extended in search of eyes to poke. He could try to be an evangelical statesman or lean into his role as a seasoned mentor to younger Christians—especially men who don’t need permission to be brawlers, as much as they need a godly role model to emulate and a spiritual father to correct their youthful excesses. He could use the eighth decade of his life to devote his considerable writing talents to persuading unbelievers to consider Christianity, to passing on the Reformed faith, and to offering a deep, penetrating cultural analysis. I believe he could do all this if he wanted to.

Or he can pepper his writing with naughty words, play with blowtorches, and make fun of Southern Baptists. That’s the other option. It will be hard to take both approaches at the same time.

Need to warm your bones in the sunshine? Sochi is Russia’s summer resort town on the Black Sea. Head there on your summer break and enjoy the warm waters and pebble-filled beaches.

6. Save Your Hard Earned Money

Post-secondary education costs in Russia can be much cheaper than in Western Europe or North America. Most courses range from  $1,880 to $13,540  per year. So if your heart is set on colleges in Moscow, Russia, they’re more affordable than you think!

Cost of living is another factor to consider, and it varies widely based on location. Living in Moscow, for example, will be much more expensive than living in Vladivostok. To show how wide this scope is,  university dormitories  can cost as little as $7 a month to as much as $780 a month!

Many students choose homestays to save money and get a crash course in Russian culture. Others rent private apartments and houses. Regardless of your choice, your average monthly expenses will be much lower than in western countries.

7. Study in High-Tech Classrooms

The Russian government pours a lot of money into producing highly-qualified university grads. Because of this, technology and research are emphasized in the university curriculum. Internships, research projects, and personal development are also encouraged.

9. Score a Scholarship

While Russian colleges and universities aren’t free, scholarships are plentiful. Last year, approximately 18,000 students received  free education  through government quotas.

If your country is very friendly with Russia or has a joint project in the works, you’ll have a better chance of getting funds. In the past, intergovernmental agreements with China, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan have benefitted students.

Universities and colleges in Russia don’t usually offer direct scholarships to international students. If you need help funding your education, these government quotas are your best bet!

Update: Detroit judge sidelined for making sleepy teen wear jail clothes on court field trip

DETROIT (AP) — A teenager on a field trip to see a Detroit court ended up in jail clothes and handcuffs because a judge said he didn’t like her attitude.

Judge Kenneth King even asked other kids in the courtroom Tuesday whether the 16-year-old girl should be taken to juvenile detention, WXYZ-TV reported.

King, who works at 36th District Court, defended his actions.

“I wanted this to look and feel very real to her, even though there’s probably no real chance of me putting her in jail. That was my own version of ‘Scared Straight,’” King said, referring to a documentary about teen offenders in New Jersey.

The teen was seeing King’s court as part of a visit organized by The Greening of Detroit, a nonprofit environmental group. During the visit, King noticed the girl falling asleep, WXYZ reported.

“You fall asleep in my courtroom one more time, I’m gonna put you in back, understood?” the judge said, according to video of his remarks.

King then had the girl change into jail clothes and wear handcuffs.

“It was her whole attitude and her whole disposition that disturbed me,” the judge told WXYZ. “I wanted to get through to her, show how serious this is and how you are to conduct yourself inside of a courtroom.”

King also threatened her with time in juvenile detention before releasing her.

“I’ll do whatever needs to be done to reach these kids and make sure that they don’t end up in front of me,” the judge said.

The Greening of Detroit released a statement, saying the “young lady was traumatized.”

“Although the judge was trying to teach a lesson of respect, his methods were unacceptable,” chairperson Marissa Ebersole Wood said. “The group of students should have been simply asked to leave the courtroom if he thought they were disrespectful.”

Judge Aliyah Sabree, who has the No. 2 leadership post at the court, released a statement Wednesday night, saying King’s conduct “does not reflect the standards we uphold at 36th District Court.”

“I am committed to addressing this matter with the utmost diligence,” Sabree said.

There was no immediate response to a message from The Associated Press seeking comment from King.

“There were so many other ways in which to have helped that young girl learn,” said Larry Dubin, a professor at the University of Detroit Mercy law school.

King told WXYZ that he spoke to the girl’s parents and offered to be a mentor.
