Most if not all the movies from the sites listed above are sourced from Internet Archive but I prefer those movie download sites over this one because there's just too much to sift through here. Still, I like to use this website for its filtering options, which can include language, creator, year, topic, and more.

Another way to download movies is through the Library of Congress. According to the LOC, the purpose of this list of movies is to "showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage."

They're a selection of films from the National Film Registry (NFR), which is a collection of movies selected by the United States National Film Preservation Board.

A couple of things I like about downloading movies here is that the website is ad-free and all the options are on a single page because there are only a couple dozen movies to pick from.

These titles can be downloaded directly from the Library of Congress' website in formats like MP4 and MOV.

Netflix is one example of a subscription service that lets you save its movies and TV shows to a download portion of the app so you can watch even without an internet connection.

As someone who has been using Netflix for a long time, it's my top choice for saving movies offline. If you don't use Netflix, there are several other similar options listed below.

Downloads are allowed through the Netflix app for iOS, Android, and Windows.

Streaming services like Netflix don't give you the video file to save wherever you want. You can only download the movie in their approved app, which helps them control further copying or burning to discs.

To my surprise, YouTube permits offline viewing for purchased or rented movies, and it's not restricted to YouTube Premium subscribers!

Anyone who buys or rents a movie through YouTube can save it for offline playback. Just open the video for viewing in the Android or iOS app, and tap Download  to pick the quality and preferred audio track.

If only this worked for YouTube's free movie collection , it'd top this list in a heartbeat!

This works in the Google TV app, too. Go to Your stuff > Movies , then tap a movie to see the download option.

Amazon Prime Video

Download purchased, rented, and subscription titles.

Purchased movies can be saved to up to four compatible download devices.

Includes a section for just downloadable content.

Filter by genre.

Must use the app to save movies.

Downloading isn't available for all films.

Subscription and rented movie downloads expire after a set time.

If you subscribe to Amazon Prime Video, you can download movies from the same screen where you can stream the video. Downloading movies also works for rented and purchased titles (but not the Freevee collection).

Most rented movies, and films purchased through a Prime subscription, expire 48 hours after you download them. Purchased movie downloads can be saved on up to four devices, but subscription titles can be stored on only two devices at a time.

It's super easy to download Amazon Prime movies . Just look for the Download button in the app for iOS, Android, macOS, or Windows.

It's easy to locate just the titles that support being downloaded.

You can have up to 25 downloads on five supported mobile devices at one time. 

Ad-supported plans don't include movie download support.

Not all movies can be saved offline.

Requires a supported mobile device.

Must occasionally renew expired downloads to keep them offline.

Hulu is another subscription-based service that offers full legal movies and original programming. This means it's a totally legit way to get movie downloads.

To watch stuff offline, use the download button next to the film you want to save.

My biggest gripe? Like these other services, downloading a movie only works on some of the plans, Hulu (No Ads) and Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV . In addition to plans with ads, movies from premium add-ons and Live TV on-demand movies, are not downloadable.

This works on the Hulu app for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Amazon Fire devices.

I've seen lots of great movies on Disney+ , many of which would be awesome to watch on a long plane ride. To download movies from the Disney+ mobile app , tap Download on the movie page.

Unfortunately, this only works on some plans. Specifically, subscribers of the Basic plans can't get movie downloads.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high-quality movies.

You can download purchased and rented movies.

Downloading requires the mobile app.

Free movies can't be saved.

Generic genres to pick from when sorting the movie list.

Fandango at Home movie downloads are allowed through the official mobile app. Just like with Netflix and similar movie streaming services, this is possible only if you've already purchased the video.

The app can sort movies by most watched or release date. Another thing I like about using this app for movie downloads is the option to show only "Fresh" movies, as determined by Rotten Tomatoes. There's also a genre picker.

If you use iTunes to buy movies, you'll be pleased to know you can download movies via iTunes Store by selecting  Download  after you purchase it. Movies can also be downloaded on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

I love the extensive list of genres to pick from when looking for a movie download. Classics , Made for TV , Music Documentaries , Regional Indian , and Short Films are some of the more unique ones, but others are included as well, for comedies, musicals, Westerns, thrillers, etc.

There Are Few Legal Movie Download Sites

It's obvious from the above list that there are very few free and legal movie download sites. This isn't from a lack of trying on my part. In fact, every month, I look over this list and check for any new sites I can add to it.

A quick Google search for 'movie download site' will list lots of options, but you probably won't even see any of the above websites on the first page of the search results.

Why is that? There are two reasons:

• Most websites offering movie downloads are doing so illegally .
• Most "movie download" sites are really just movie streaming sites.

The terms stream and download are different . The top sites people are visiting for movie downloads often don't deliver on the 'download' part and instead let you stream movies. Usually, the films you can get on those sites were released this year , and some are even still in theaters! That's the first red flag that the website isn't complying with most copyright laws.

Movies obtained that way are almost always rips of Blu-rays or DVDs, meaning someone is sharing their purchased (or rented, filmed, or pre-released) movie with others. This is how most movie torrent sites work.

If a movie isn't in the public domain or if the creator hasn't authorized its sharing, then it's not yours to keep. The first few sites in the list above offer completely free content because they host public domain films, while the others are legally sound due to agreements those companies have with the movie studios, allowing them to offer authorized downloads.

Consider Streaming Movies Instead

If you don't have to, don't limit yourself to downloading when there's the option of streaming.

This is what I do 99% of the time. There are many more choices if you consider watching films on free movie websites instead. The films may not be yours to keep and can't be distributed through flash drives or burned onto DVDs, but you'll get to watch them often in high quality and stream them directly from the websites, usually as many times as you like.

If you want to download a movie so it can be played on your phone or tablet, I recommend using a free movie-watching app instead. It's all the same titles you can find on movie websites but packaged for a smaller screen.

For starters, offline movies and shows are capped at 15 downloads per device per calendar month for ad-supported Netflix plans . Ad-free users can have up to 100 active downloads at a time per device, up to however many devices your plan supports. Certain movies and shows cannot be downloaded, titles will automatically be removed from your downloads after a week or so, and some movies and shows can only be downloaded a specific number of times per year.

Now that we’ve covered all that ground, we can praise Netflix for its amazing selection of movies and shows. You’ll even be able to filter search results for titles that can be downloaded. To download a movie or show, you’ll need to be using the Hulu app on an iOS, Android, or Amazon Fire TV device. Tap Downloads from the list of menu options. You can also tap See What’s Downloadable to see what movies and shows can be saved for offline viewing. To download a movie, tap the Download icon on the Details page. To download an episode of a show, tap Episodes , then tap the Download icon next to the episode description.

Unwatched Hulu downloads will automatically be removed from your download queue after 30 days, and you’ll have up to 48 hours to finish a movie or episode once you’ve started it. You’ll also be able to renew certain expired downloads by tapping Downloads > the alert icon (an exclamation point with a circle around it) > Renew Download .  

The home of all things Mickey Mouse, Boba Fett, and Homer Simpson, Disney+ is another great streaming platform with a download option . But are you ready for the caveats? (Don’t worry, there aren’t too many).  

Like Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu, downloads for offline viewing are not available to Disney+ Basic plan subscribers. You’ll need to have a Disney+ Premium , Disney Bundle Trio Premium, or Legacy Disney Bundle to take advantage of this feature. Oh, and if you’re a Hulu subscriber with a linked standalone plan to Disney+ (or a Disney Bundle subscriber), you’ll also be able to download select Hulu (No Ads) movies and shows for offline viewing.  

To download a movie or show you want to watch , you’ll need to be using the Disney+ app on an iOS or Android device. Once you’ve found the title you want to download, tap Download on the Details page to start the download. One thing we love about offline downloads for Disney+ is you can store an unlimited amount of downloaded content, on up to 10 different devices. Just be sure to log in once or twice per month, as downloads will automatically be removed from inactive Disney+ accounts after 30 days.

YouTube can be a never-ending rabbit hole of silly pet videos, guitar covers, world news, and pretty much anything else you can think of. Fortunately, the popular Google property lets you download a number of these uploads for offline viewing.

There’s a catch though: You’ll need to be a YouTube Premium subscriber , which costs $14 per month for PC web browsers and the Android version of the YouTube app. If you own an iPhone or iPad, the cost goes up to $19 per month, because YouTube bundles in Apple’s in-app transaction fee.  

You can store downloads on up to 10 devices. If you add a new device to your plan, the oldest of your 10 existing devices will be removed. You can perform this swap-out up to four times per year. To begin a download, simply find the movie, show, or user upload you want to watch, then click or tap the Download icon. To view dowloaded content, tap your YouTube profile icon, and select a title from the Downloads dashboard.

You’ll also be able to download movies and shows you’ve purchased or rented from YouTube for offline viewing — without needing a YouTube Premium account. Unfortunately, offline viewing doesn’t extend to YouTube’s free movie collection.

A bastion of cultural significance, the Library of Congress (LOC), in partnership with the National Film Registry , curates a yearly section of movies that “showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage.” For 2024, the collection only features 18 films, but you couldn’t ask for an easier interface to use.

After selecting one of the films, you’ll be brought to a video player page. Use the playback controls by hovering over the film thumbnail. Credits, release dates, and format info can be found by scrolling down past the player. You’ll also see a small Download dropdown. Click or tap this option to choose between an MP4 or MOV for your export file. Click Go , and the film will open in a new tab.

To save the movie to your computer, right-click, then click Download Video or Download Video As… to choose an export location on your PC. We were able to use the Download dropdown on an iPhone too, but once the film opens in a new tab, there isn’t a way to actually save it to your mobile device.  

We explicitly advise against downloading copyrighted material to a PC or mobile device. So if you’d like to venture away from the big streaming titans like Netflix, Disney+, and YouTube, your best bet for legal free downloads are public domain films. Perhaps the only drawback with PDM is its curation is limited to older films only. But if you’re a Hollywood Golden Age fan, or discerning arthouse viewer, you’ll be quite pleased with the selections.  

Similar to PublicDomainMovie.net, the Internet Archive site is just what it sounds like: a handsome collection of royalty-free films that you can sort by genre, era, subject, and many other filters. The Internet Archive actually provides public domain films to sites like PublicDomainMovie and similar free-to-download pages.  

  There are thousands of selections on the Internet Archive, and every film gets its own title page, complete with synopsis, cast and crew credits, and a handy Downloads sub-menu with several file types to choose from. The download process is identical to the PublicDomainMovie site. Choose the file extension you’d like to export with. Fortunately, many of the best streaming services now allow you to download movies to watch offline, all for free, as part of your normal account. So, in this article, we'll show you how to download movies to watch offline, free and legally.

You can watch movies offline on Netflix depending on your subscription, and downloading content doesn't count towards the number of screens you're allowed to view on (you can download to the same number of devices as your plan allows for streaming).

However, you cannot download movies to watch offline on the ad-supported plan.

In addition, not all content is available to download. To see if something is, just look for the Download button on the movie's description page within the iOS or Android app.

If you want to know how to download movies on a laptop with Netflix, it's simple: you need to use the desktop app instead of the browser. There's a Netflix app for Windows 10 and 11 in the Microsoft Store, and you can use the Android app on most Chromebooks. If you're on an iPhone, you can't make purchases inside the app, so load up on what you need before you leave home. You don't have the same problem on Android. Finding content on Google TV is easy thanks to the user-friendly layout. It's similar to Amazon Prime, with snapshots of user ratings, so you can quickly find the must-see films.

Just open a movie or series page and tap Download to save it. Then, on the Your stuff > Movies screen, use the Downloaded filter to see your offline content.

YouTube Premium is a subscription-based service available in certain countries, including the United States. Vimeo was the first video streaming site to enable high-definition streaming, and not surprisingly, you can still watch a large chunk of the site's content in high definition, including content from independent filmmakers and music videos from rising stars.

People also love using Vimeo because it's ad-free and doesn't need a subscription (although it isn't one of the streaming services you can watch without signing up ).

What all these movies have in common is that they are available for viewing online free of charge. They might be part of the free movie catalog on a free movie site that also offers pay to stream films, such as Hulu. They might be available on an all free site such as Crackle or Snagfilms. Watching these free movies online does not require a subscription, a rental fee or a purchase of any kind. They're an easy answer to the question of how to watch movies for free online.

Free Online Movie Streaming Sites

You won't need to sign up for anything in order to watch free movies online. You don't need to have a subscription or an account with these sites in order to watch these movies. But the sites don't know who you are. They may require that you enter your birth date to verify that you're old enough to watch movies intended for mature audiences. The Roku Channel offers hundreds of movie, live news and TV series. Some have complete seasons. All this is free to viewers who use Roku streaming devices.

Free Movies on Streaming Websites

The no-charge content on these platforms is a little different from the free trials offered by many subscription streaming services. The content on Crackle or Peacock, for example, is available without the need to set up an account on the platform. You also don't have to provide any payment information. Free-trial services work a little differently. Many premium streaming platforms, such as Disney+ and Apple TV+, offer free trial periods during which you can watch their content without paying. The same is true of many network streaming platforms such as STARZ or Showtime. The difference is that you'll need to sign up for an account on the platform and provide payment information. You won't be charged a subscription fee during the free-trial period. But if you don't cancel by the time the trial period ends, your account will automatically convert to a paid subscription. You'll be charged the subscription fee.

Keeping Free Movies Online

Of course, there's often a trade-off involved when it comes to watching movies for free. Sites often subsidize their free streaming movies offerings by including advertising along with the films. Introducing OpenAI o1-preview

A new series of reasoning models for solving hard problems. Available starting 9.12

We've developed a new series of AI models designed to spend more time thinking before they respond. They can reason through complex tasks and solve harder problems than previous models in science, coding, and math. Today, we are releasing the first of this series in ChatGPT and our API. This is a preview and we expect regular updates and improvements. Alongside this release, we’re also including evaluations for the next update, currently in development.

How it works

We trained these models to spend more time thinking through problems before they respond, much like a person would. Through training, they learn to refine their thinking process, try different strategies, and recognize their mistakes. 

In our tests, the next model update performs similarly to PhD students on challenging benchmark tasks in physics, chemistry, and biology. We also found that it excels in math and coding. In a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), GPT-4o correctly solved only 13% of problems, while the reasoning model scored 83%. Their coding abilities were evaluated in contests and reached the 89th percentile in Codeforces competitions. You can read more about this in our technical research post .

As an early model, it doesn't yet have many of the features that make ChatGPT useful, like browsing the web for information and uploading files and images. For many common cases GPT-4o will be more capable in the near term.

But for complex reasoning tasks this is a significant advancement and represents a new level of AI capability. Given this, we are resetting the counter back to 1 and naming this series OpenAI o1.

As part of developing these new models, we have come up with a new safety training approach that harnesses their reasoning capabilities to make them adhere to safety and alignment guidelines. By being able to reason about our safety rules in context, it can apply them more effectively. 

One way we measure safety is by testing how well our model continues to follow its safety rules if a user tries to bypass them (known as "jailbreaking"). On one of our hardest jailbreaking tests, GPT-4o scored 22 (on a scale of 0-100) while our o1-preview model scored 84. You can read more about this in the system card and our research post .

To match the new capabilities of these models, we’ve bolstered our safety work, internal governance, and federal government collaboration. This includes rigorous testing and evaluations using our Preparedness Framework (opens in a new window) , best-in-class red teaming, and board-level review processes, including by our Safety & Security Committee. To advance our commitment to AI safety, we recently formalized agreements with the U.S. and U.K. AI Safety Institutes. We've begun operationalizing these agreements, including granting the institutes early access to a research version of this model. This was an important first step in our partnership, helping to establish a process for research, evaluation, and testing of future models prior to and following their public release.

Whom it’s for

These enhanced reasoning capabilities may be particularly useful if you’re tackling complex problems in science, coding, math, and similar fields. For example, o1 can be used by healthcare researchers to annotate cell sequencing data, by physicists to generate complicated mathematical formulas needed for quantum optics, and by developers in all fields to build and execute multi-step workflows. 

OpenAI o1-mini

The o1 series excels at accurately generating and debugging complex code. To offer a more efficient solution for developers, we’re also releasing OpenAI o1-mini , a faster, cheaper reasoning model that is particularly effective at coding. As a smaller model, o1-mini is 80% cheaper than o1-preview, making it a powerful, cost-effective model for applications that require reasoning but not broad world knowledge. 

How to use OpenAI o1

ChatGPT Plus and Team users will be able to access o1 models in ChatGPT starting today. Both o1-preview and o1-mini can be selected manually in the model picker, and at launch, weekly rate limits will be 30 messages for o1-preview and 50 for o1-mini. We are working to increase those rates and enable ChatGPT to automatically choose the right model for a given prompt.

ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu users will get access to both models beginning next week.  Developers who qualify for API usage tier 5 (opens in a new window) can start prototyping with both models in the API today with a rate limit of 20 RPM. We’re working to increase these limits after additional testing. The API for these models currently doesn't include function calling, streaming, support for system messages, and other features. We also are planning to bring o1-mini access to all ChatGPT Free users . 

What’s next

This is an early preview of these reasoning models in ChatGPT and the API. In addition to model updates, we expect to add browsing, file and image uploading, and other features to make them more useful to everyone. 

We also plan to continue developing and releasing models in our GPT series, in addition to the new OpenAI o1 series.

Bulgaru wins WTA 125 Bucharest with Halep on site; Teichmann wins Ljubljana

Miriam Bulgaru and Jil Teichmann were the champions at last week's clay-court WTA 125 events, with both players shooting up the PIF WTA Singles Rankings as a result.

Romania's Bulgaru won the Tiriac Foundation Trophy title in her nation's capital of Bucharest on Sunday. She was joined by two of her country's sporting luminaries in the trophy ceremony: former WTA World No.1 Simona Halep and Olympic gymnastics champion Nadia Comaneci.

Bulgaru outlasted Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a 2-hour and 4-minute final. Bulgaru won nearly half of her first-service return points en route to the narrow victory on her home soil.

With her first career WTA 125 title under her belt, 25-year-old Bulgaru rises from No.202 to a new career-high ranking of No.178 in Monday's updated singles rankings. Bulgaru set her previous career-high ranking of No.183 one year ago.

Saturday's doubles final at the Tiriac Foundation Trophy was won by Carole Monnet and Darja Semenistaja, who squeaked past Aliona Bolsova and Katarzyna Kawa 1-6, 6-2, [10-7] in 64 minutes. It is the first WTA 125 doubles title for Monnet, and the second for Semenistaja.

Meanwhile, at the Zavarovalnica Sava Ljubljana in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Teichmann of Switzerland took home that WTA 125 title with a 7-6(8), 6-4 victory over No.2 seed Nuria Parrizas Diaz of Spain on Sunday.

Teichmann was twice down a break in the first set, at 3-0 and 6-5, and she needed four set points in the tiebreak before taking the one-set lead. Teichmann then needed 10 break points in the opening game of the second set before earning that break on the way to victory.

All told, 27-year-old Teichmann won the 2-hour and 18-minute final to claim her second career WTA 125 title and rise from No.182 to No.145 in Monday's new rankings. Teichmann has been ranked as high as World No.21 and she won two WTA 250 titles in 2019.

Teichmann returned to court for the doubles final on Sunday, but she fell just short of pulling off the sweep. Nuria Brancaccio and Leyre Romero Gormaz edged past Lina Gjorcheska and Teichmann 5-7, 7-5, [10-7] and clinched the Ljubljana doubles title.

Gjorcheska and Teichmann held a championship point at deciding point at 5-4 in the second set, but Brancaccio and Romero Gormaz survived that peril on their way to their first career WTA 125 doubles title.
