This award recognizes doctoral thesis research of outstanding quality and achievement in atomic, molecular, or optical physics and encourages effective written and oral presentation of research results. The annual award is presented to one individual and consists of a $2,500 stipend and a certificate.

Finalists are invited to present their research at the annual DAMOP Meeting. All finalists will be reimbursed up to $1,000 for travel expenses.

Rules and eligibility

  • Doctoral students who have passed their thesis defense for the Ph.D. in the disciplines of atomic, molecular, or optical physics during the two calendar years prior to the award year are eligible. For example, a person who passed their Ph.D. thesis defense in either 2018 or 2019 is eligible for the 2020 award.
  • A student who has won a thesis prize in another APS unit is not eligible for an award.
  • The student's thesis advisor nominates the student, and must be a member of the APS and DAMOP.
  • A person, other than a member of the committee making the selection, may submit one nomination or seconding letter in any given year.
  • A student may be a finalist in this competition only once.
  • Eligible non-finalists may be renominated. Nominations from the previous year do not rollover. Nominators should submit a new nomination in a subsequent year, although the nomination package can contain the same material.

Process and selection

The nomination package consists of the following materials:

  • APS Prizes and Awards nomination form (nominee’s contact information, thesis defense date and suggested citation).
  • Nominator information form (nominator’s name, affiliation and contact information).
  • A nomination letter from the thesis advisor citing the specific contributions of the nominee and the significance of those contributions. The thesis advisor must be a member of the APS and DAMOP prior to submitting a nomination.

Establishment and support

This award was established in 1992 by the Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (DAMOP) as the Award for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Research in Atomic, Molecular, or Optical Physics, with support from members and friends of DAMOP. In 2015, the award was endowed by M Squared Lasers . DAMOP launched a supplemental campaign in 2016 to recognize Deborah Jin’s contributions to physics by establishing the Deborah Jin Memorial Endowment. Upon achieving and exceeding the goal through the generosity of Deborah Jin’s colleagues, family, and friends, DAMOP renamed the award in her honor. The income from this endowment will supplement travel for finalists and provide new funding to enable students to attend the annual DAMOP Meeting, with an emphasis on enhancing the diversity of student attendees.

The membership of APS is diverse and global, and the nominees and recipients of APS Honors should reflect that diversity so that all are recognized for their impact on our community. Nominations of members belonging to groups traditionally underrepresented in physics, such as women, LGBT+ scientists, scientists who are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), disabled scientists, scientists from institutions with limited resources, and scientists from outside the United States, are especially encouraged.

Nominees for and holders of APS Honors (prizes, awards, and fellowship) and official leadership positions are expected to meet standards of professional conduct and integrity as described in the APS Ethics Guidelines . Violations of these standards may disqualify people from consideration or lead to revocation of honors or removal from office.

The CMS collaboration is proud to have been successfully advancing knowledge, scientific research and technology for years, and all this would certainly not have been possible without the contribution of each of its members.

The CMS Award, which honours dedicated members of the CMS collaboration for their significant contributions and outstanding work, has been awarded every year since 2000. Nominations can be made by any CMS member, for work in a variety of fields, ranging from detector systems and coordination to outreach. The awardees are selected by a dedicated committee of five members, and the selection is then endorsed by the CMS Collaboration Board (CB) Chair.

ISGS PhD Thesis Awardees

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua.

By hun bok jung, maxim i. boyanov, hiromi konishi, yubing sun, bhoopesh mishra, kenneth m. kemner, eric e. roden, and huifang xu.

The ISGS PhD Thesis Award, first launched in 2018, was created to distinguish PhD theses representing outstanding contributions to scientific and/or technological knowledge in the field of sol-gel chemistry and related fields.

The Ph.D. Award Committee for the 2022 competition was composed of Professor Masahide Takahashi , Professor Benoît Heinrichs , and Professor Marco Faustini .

The members of the PhD Award Committee examined the eight applications received, which were all of extremely high quality. All the candidates presented very strong summaries, reflecting very advanced and well-performed Thesis works.

In the present edition, the overall ranking obtained by the members of the Committee placed Dr. Mathias Stanzel top of the list. Dr. Anshul Yadav and Dr. Ann-Kathrin Koopmann placed second and third, respectively.

Dr. Mathias Stanzel ’s Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Mesoporous film architectures and step gradient formation”, was defended at Ernst-Berl-Institut für Technische und Makromolekulare Chemie, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Darmstadt (Germany).

Dr. Anshul Yadav ’s Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Membrane distillation process for high saline and wastewater treatment”, was defended at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research, Ghaziabad (India).

Dr. Ann-Kathrin Koopmann ’s Ph.D. thesis, entitled “Porous Materials Made of Polyphenolic Tannin”, was defended at Paris Lodron University of Salzburg (Austria).

For the Gold Medal, the Ph.D. Award Committee would like to emphasize that the candidate made an excellent and original contribution to the fabrication of sophisticated sol-gel-derived mesoporous films by achieving great control of the spatial position of the chemical functions. He mastered and successfully applied a broad variety of methods for the characterization including optical and electrochemical methods to probe the transport of molecules in well-defined mesoarchitectures.

As Gold Medal, Silver Medal and Bronze Medal winners of the Ph.D. Thesis Award 2022, Dr. Mathias Stanzel , Dr. Anshul Yadav and Dr. Ann-Kathrin Koopmann  will receive a diploma and a 2-year ISGS membership.

Thanks to Springer sponsoring, they will receive books in the value of US$500, US$400, and US$300, respectively.

Moreover, they will be invited to contribute with a paper to the  Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology , the official journal of ISGS.

The Board of Directors of the ISGS and the ISGS PhD Thesis Award Committee wish to warmly congratulate the three awardees.

ISGS is an international, interdisciplinary, not-for-profit organization whose primary purpose and objective is the advancement of sol-gel science and technology. ISGS aims are both to represent the particular needs and aspirations of the international sol-gel community and to support this sol-gel community.

Since the inception of the highly successful Sol-Gel Workshop series in Padova during 1981, sol-gel science and technology has evolved from its origins within traditional materials science (mainly glass and ceramics) to become an extraordinarily multidisciplinary area of research, spanning chemistry, physics, biology, materials science and nanotechnology.

ISGS, grouping of scientists who are interested in sol-gel science and technology at the begining, evolved over time in a professional, fully functional, scientific society.
