'Kasargold' review: Whiz-bang tale of ever-escalating menace
Before I begin, I want to inform readers that this review is of the film with the original ending, unlike the abrupt and incomplete one screened at Friday’s early shows due to an unforeseen technical glitch. The final version, with the complete and much superior ending, was being updated in theatres at the time of writing this.
Kasargold has an intriguing prologue. A father narrates a fable to his son. It ends with a cruel twist you don’t see coming. It serves a meaningful purpose—encapsulating the entire mood of Kasargold , which is basically this prologue on acid. Speaking of, every character in this film behaves as though on crack, beginning with Asif Ali’s Alby, who spends most of the film’s runtime acting like a wild animal, yelling, his fists itching to punch somebody.
Fortunately, the actor doesn’t go to the unbearable extremes of his performance in Jis Joy’s Innale Vare. In Kasargold, this performance is offset moderately by a lead with equal footing in the form of Sunny Wayne’s Faizal—the film’s crucial emotional anchor— and a multitude of supporting players with nefarious intentions and sub-plots that sometimes work in favour of the film and rarely against.
A minor vehicular collision sets off the film’s events, which throb with ever-escalating menace. Populating the film are enough sub-plots, characters, and chaos, thereby making it appear larger than it really is. The construction of it all works to a large extent, save for the few areas where you start wondering whether this much intensity is necessary. For those who are familiar with the films of Oliver Stone (Savages) or Tony Scott (True Romance), Kasargold is essentially a Malayali version of that kind of storytelling, where characters are constantly on the run, trying to evade perilous encounters and get out in one piece.
There is a healthy give and take between style and substance, but Kasargold is predominantly about greed and the extent to which some go for survival. Given the shaky dynamic between the characters played by Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne, the events of the prologue remain at the back of our minds, and the film does a fairly decent job of toying with our expectations as to how their arc will end.
The unpredictability factor comes from having an assortment of shady characters played by the likes of Vinayakan (as a force of subdued menace), Siddique, PP Kunjhikrishnan (actor, Nna Thaan Case Kodu), Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval (director, Nna Thaan Case Kodu), Malavika Sreenath, Deepak Parambol, Abhiram Radhakrishnan and others.
Deals get made; locations, costumes and vehicles get replaced; alliances get tested; and some individuals get eliminated in brutal fashion. The film wears its gritty heart on its sleeve, and save for the occasional energy-dipping, attention-wavering portions, director Mridul Nair and editor Manoj Kannoth (Nna Thaan Case Kodu) manage to impart a whiz-bang rhythm to most sequences, which help the film stay afloat to a large extent. Vishnu Vijay’s refreshing, commendably non-intrusive score also helps keep repetition fatigue at bay.
Whose loyalty matters? Who will save the other’s hide? Who will remain alive in the end? Who will play avenger? A lot of questions, the answers to which are provided by the finale (the right one, that is). But I must admit to getting confused by a few narrative choices, like having a voiceover of Asif Ali narrating some key moments, which made me wonder when the narration actually began. There is also a bit of confusion as to who the loot—the one which lands in different hands—belonged to.
These minor complaints aside, Kasargold i s a fairly gripping, anxiety-inducing thriller that succeeds at creating a sense of claustrophobia, despite being set outdoors, by the time it gets to the closing credits. Just don’t forget to ask the theatres if what they are screening is the final cut because the original ending is more effective than the ‘eye-opening’ one they screened during the morning shows.
Film: Kasargold Director: Mridul Nair Cast: Asif Ali, Sunny Wayne, Vinayakan, Deepak Parambol, Siddique Rating: 3.5/5

Kasargold Malayalam Movie
The premise in 'Kasargold' is smuggling of gold that exposes the nexus between politicians and smugglers. Director Mridul Nair's sophomore is saturated with initial thrill and suspense lending ample momentum to the plot especially with the introduction of Faisal, played by Sunny Wayne. When the smuggled gold is lost from the carrier, the smugglers and the perpetrators are deployed on both sides of the tale, setting the stage for an impending encounter. Led by the hunters, who lost the gold, the hide and seek game enters the next level when Alby, played by Asif Ali, scouts for the thieves.
As the film traverses through a riveting path created by writers Mridul Nair and Sajimon Prabhakar, gradually it gives the feel of a jerky route with the template of the plot astoundingly embracing an ordinary format. Even as there is a twist in the climax, it is a snap to realize the nature of the tale after a certain period. The conflict sets in when Alby's car involves in an accident with Faisal's vehicle. Alby is the henchman of Moosa Haji (Siddique), a gold smuggler. Following the mishap, the gold is robbed from Alby's car. Now, Alby and gold carrier Nancy (Malavika Sreenath) land in a soup. The search for the missing gold keeps Alby engaged.
Meanwhile, Moosa and local politician Narayanan (PP Kunhikrishnan), who also has a role in smuggling gold, become worried about the robbed gold. 'Kasargold' shifts to Goa in its decisive phase but the events are pretty enough to arouse one's dejà vu feel while the Kasaragod slang of characters is a tad amusing. The relationship among characters is difficult to unravel here due to the 'spoiler effect' of the film, which starts with a moral story narrated by a father to his son at night.
The avarice of people engaged in gold smuggling prods them to double-cross each other and this familiar factor is plainly narrated in the movie with least intensity and freshness. The slipshod writing has laid out characters representing each side with the purposes of 'catch them' and 'escape from them' activities. Interestingly, the pattern of these assignments is hardly new for viewers considering the status of the plot that fails to bring in something innovative and suspenseful.
Faisal is a typical ordinary man with financial problems and his family matters replenish the emotional fissures of the film at regular intervals. Sunny Wayne accomplishes in garnering empathies while portraying the hardships of a common man. The agility and aggressive mien in the performance of Asif Ali adds exquisite thrust to the proceedings albeit he offers very little as an actor here. The police officer engaged by the antagonists to nab the thieves is a trite addition to the tale and Vinayakan as suspended cop Alex John gives a mediocre impression. Malavika Sreenath, who plays a gold carrier employed by Moosa, is loud and emphatic in appearance but struggles to be eloquent in performance.
Mridul Nair has displayed a swashbuckling confidence in the treatment of 'Kasargold' but that energy certainly lacks in the screenplay. 'Kasargold' bears the typical story of gold smugglers and it is woven around the ordinary creative realms, triggering predictable vibes. The sheen is hardly enough to blot out the chinks in the plot. Cinematography by Jebin Jacob (with additional cinematography by Pavi K Pavan) perfectly blends with the premise of the tale; be it the chasing scenes or the exotic locales of Goa.

Review | Gold as the ultimate target, 'Kasargold' treads familiar ground
'Kasargold', directed by Mridul Nair, kickstarts with an ancient folk legend that foreshadows the greed-fueled conflict at its core. Featuring Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne in the lead roles, 'Kasargold' leans towards being a stylish cinematic experience rather than a deeply engaging one.
In the movie, Alby (Asif Ali) and Faizal (Sunny Wayne) embark on a daring heist, stealing gold worth crores, and chaos ensues as a relentless gang pursues them for its retrieval.
While the movie's plot may appear somewhat familiar, it follows the tried-and-true formula seen in many Malayalam films. The conventional elements of a chase and fleeing to a different state have been employed. However, what sets this film apart is its refreshing use of Northern Kerala and its distinctive dialect. Nearly all the characters in the movie speak in the Northern Kerala dialect, and the stunning views and geography in and around Kasaragod are brilliantly incorporated, adding a unique dimension to the narrative.
Malayalam cinema has witnessed its fair share of films with plots revolving around the chase for gold, often portraying it as the ultimate obsession. In the movie, Asif Ali's character emphasizes how gold can be akin to a drug, but the movie fails to build on that. The film's challenge lies in its predictability, where you anticipate a fresh twist, but it rarely materializes, leaving you yearning for a more innovative storyline.
The initial half of the film unfolds at a leisurely pace, failing to pique the audience's curiosity about the forthcoming events. However, in the second half, the narrative gains momentum, introducing more compelling developments. Nevertheless, were it not for the visually striking cinematography and stylish elements, the movie might struggle to maintain its grip on the viewer.
Speaking of performances, Asif Ali truly stands out in his on-screen partnership with Sunny Wayne. His styling and swag throughout the movie add a distinct allure. Sunny Wayne, on the other hand, portrays a more grounded and mature character, maintaining consistency throughout the movie.
Additionally, the film features Vinayakan in a somewhat villainous role. His portrayal is commendable, with attention to detail evident in his character. Notably, his habit of mixing milk with alcohol is intriguing, a trope often associated with past trauma in movie villains. However, the movie doesn't delve deeply into exploring this aspect of his character.
While 'Kasargold' may not feature the typical mass scenes, it successfully captivates the audience, largely due to the evocative score by Vishnu Vijay. The film adheres to the characteristic aesthetics of a new-gen movie, with a distinct, eye-catching set design in numerous scenes. It's undoubtedly a cinematic experience worth indulging in, primarily due to the charismatic performances of Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne.

Kerala’s Kasaragod becomes new favourite location spot for Malayalam filmmakers
The region remained unexplored until recently as the dialect here is different from what’s spoken in the other parts of the State.

Malayalam films shot in Kasaragod. (Twitter)
Malayalam films haven’t explored Kasaragod district located in the northern part of Kerala bordering Karnataka. It’s mostly because the dialect here is different from what’s spoken in the other parts of the State.
But films like Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum (The Mainour and The Witness, 2017) and Thinkalazhcha Nischayam (Monday is the Engagement, 2021) have popularised this unexplored region among movie lovers.
As a result, more flicks have been shot in the region in recent times and surprisingly, they evoked warm responses from both audiences and critics alike, especially for their content and execution.
Most of the Malayalam movies are shot in the Palakkad district as the stories revolve around the high-class society.
A poster of ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’. (Twitter)
But now, the trend seems to have changed as more filmmakers are heading to Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod and other unexplored areas of the State for shootings.
Even scriptwriters are coming up with realistic plots because of which the directors are evincing to travel to new locations, even in cities.
Kumbalangi Nights (2019) is one such example. Similarly, new films with new content and locations are a welcome change.

Meanwhile, producer M Renjith’s recent remark that “the easy availability of drugs in Kasaragod is prompting the filmmakers to hold film shootings in the region” evoked strong protests from those who filmed their projects in the district. Following the criticism, the producer rendered an apology on social media .
Against this backdrop, let’s take a quick look at the movies shot in Kasaragod in the recent past:
Trend-setter films

Directed by Dileesh Pothan, Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum dealt with a young couple — Prasad (Suraj Venjaramoodu) and Sreeja (Nimisha Sajayan) — who shifts to Kasaragod from Alappuzha.
Their efforts to retrieve Sreeja’s gold chain from a thief (Fahadh Faasil) were shot in the rough terrains of Kasaragod.
Directed by Senna Hegde, Thinkalazhcha Nischayam ’s story is set in Kasaragod. The film premiered on Sony LIV during the lockdown period.
It won the hearts of the audience, all thanks to the realistic plot and the dialogues (written in the local dialect).
1744 White Alto (2022) is again directed by Senna Hegde and shot in Kasaragod.

Nna Thaan Case Kodu (Sue Me Then, 2022) directed by Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval was entirely shot in the Kasaragod district as the story was set in the region.
Kunchako Boban delivered his career-best performance in it. It showcased the festivals, middle-class people, political parties, and judiciary system in a satirical tone and went on to become a phenomenal success upon its release.
Ratheesh was instrumental in highlighting all the small elements in this terrain. In his debut film Android Kunjappan , the director was appreciated for the interesting plot and for using the local dialect of Kannur, another northern district.

Kumari (2022) is another movie that was shot in Kasargaod. Directed by Nirmal Sahadev, the movie featured Aishwarya Lekshmi and Shine Tom Chacko in major roles.
The horror fantasy was enjoyed by a set of audience. However, it wasn’t a hit at the box office.
Madanolsavam

Madanolsavam is the recent movie to be shot in Kasaragod. It stars Suraj Venjaramoodu and Babu Antony in pivotal roles (as Madanan).
Suraj is a common man, while Babu Antony is a politician. The story revolves around elections and dummy/rebel candidates.
Directed by Sudheesh Gopinath, Madanolsavam is a hilarious ride and captures Kasaragod’s beauty in its true sense.
Also Read: Malayalam watchlist for May 2023
It is written by Ratheesh Balakrishna Poduval. Released for Vishu, it is still having a good run at the box office.
Ajayante Randam Moshanam
Ajayante Randam Moshanam (Ajayan’s Second Theft) is another movie being shot in Kasaragod. Touted to be a big-budget movie, it portrays Tovino Thomas in triple roles.
Tovino recently said he had an “epic” and “larger than life” experience being part of the flick. He spent 110 days in Kasaragod for the shoot and appreciated the residents for their never-ending support and love.
Debutant director Jithin Laal revealed that he faced hardships for more than five years which helped him in filming Ajayante Randam Moshanam .
Adrishya Jalakangal
A poster of ‘Adrishya Jalakangal’. (Twitter)
Adrishya Jalakangal (Invisible Widows) directed by Dr Biju Kumar Damodaran is being shot in Kasaragod and Kannur. It is an anti-war film set in an imaginary space. The team worked for over two months to erect the sets.
The script deals with a socially-driven topic and touches on many different aspects and elements of society related to war.
Adrishya Jalakangal stars Tovino Thomas in the lead role besides Nimisha Sajayan and Indrans. It is jointly produced by Ellanar Films, Mythri Movie Makers and Tovino Thomas Productions.
Asif Ali-starrer Kasargold , a high-octane thriller based on gold smuggling, is also being shot in Kasaragod. Its plot revolves around a group of friends and their greed for gold.
It is directed by Mridul Nair. The makers recently released a lyrical video that’s trending online.
