Consider in-state tuition and tuition reciprocity 

In-state tuition allows residents of a state to receive cheaper tuition for a college or university in their own state. Additionally, many universities and colleges reserve scholarships and financial aid for in-state students, which helps reduce the cost of attending college for those who live there.

How do you get in-state tuition? 

Being a Kansas resident significantly reduces the cost of tuition for Kansas universities and colleges. In order to become a Kansas resident for tuition purposes, you will need to have a continuous physical presence in Kansas for at least 365 days prior to the first day of classes for which you are applying for residency. During these 365 days, you will need to receive income and financial support from Kansas sources. Additionally, you will need to show intent to remain in Kansas indefinitely. Obtaining a Kansas driver’s license, voter registration in Kansas, car registration in Kansas, and owning a home in Kansas are all possible ways to show your intent. Lastly, you must prove that you are residing in Kansas for reasons other than educational purposes. 

Does Kansas offer tuition reciprocity? 

Yes, Kansas is a member of the Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) , which is a tuition reciprocity program . In this program, students from participating states are able to attend certain programs and colleges outside of their home state for a reduced cost. National Merit Finalists

Kansas students who are designated as National Merit Finalists and have selected KU as their number one college choice with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, will have $1,000 per year added to their award. Renewal criteria is the same as other merit-based aid

Eligibility

• Must apply for admission by December 1
• We award scholarships based on a student’s GPA. KU will use either the weighted or unweighted GPA (on a 4.0 scale) — whichever benefits the student most — after the student’s sixth high school semester. If your school uses a different scale, it will be converted to a 4.0 format. Please note that KU uses a weighted GPA if it a school-wide policy and the weighted GPA is listed on the transcript for all students.
• These scholarships are awarded to domestic students who enroll in at least 12 credit hours for both the fall and spring semester immediately following their high school graduation.
• If you feel your application warrants additional review, please contact your admissions representative.
• Student must maintain a 3.0 KU GPA and be enrolled full-time.
• Scholarships are given for a student’s first bachelor’s degree or eight semesters of enrollment, whichever comes first.

How to prepare:

In order to best fill out your application, you may need to have a few things prepared ahead of time.

• Where do you plan on attending college?
• Will you pursue a technical degree or a four-year institution?
• What type of major sparks your interest?
• Obtain a minimum of two letters of recommendation. They can be from teachers, coaches, clergy members, etc.
• Write a personal statement. Most scholarships will ask for a personal statement or short essay. Begin gathering ideas that include qualities that set you apart.
• Acquire an electronic copy of your unofficial transcript.
• Complete the FAFSA before you complete the general and college conditional applications and develop an education budget. This way, donors and organizations can accurately consider you for scholarships.

How to get started:

Each December, our applications open for the upcoming school year. Scholarships will only be available to high school seniors or current college students.

Scholarships

Ku scholarships.

The KU Office of Admissions maintains scholarship eligibility requirements for freshman and transfer students.

Unless otherwise noted, KU provides four-year renewable scholarships to eligible freshmen who submit a complete application by the priority scholarship deadline of Dec. 1. Tiers are primarily based on the overall GPA on a 4.0 scale that most benefits a student at time of application. Recipients receive written notification within seven to 10 days of admission.

An incoming fall freshman or transfer student can defer a scholarship for one year, or until they attend another college, university, or community college. Any change in residency or resident tuition rates may also impact eligibility for a scholarship.

Renewal criteria

Freshman scholarships expire after eight semesters of undergraduate study or upon graduation with a first bachelor’s degree, whichever occurs first. Transfer scholarships expire after three years of undergraduate study.

Scholarship recipients must be enrolled full-time and maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative KU GPA.

After spring grades have posted, Financial Aid & Scholarships will verify that students have met renewal criteria. Students are notified of their scholarship status for the upcoming academic year via their registered KU email address.

If a scholarship is not renewed after the first year due to grades and/or hours, it is possible to earn that scholarship for a future term or academic year. Financial Aid & Scholarships monitors grades and hours for all students, and will send notification if renewal criteria is again met

For students that take a gap year for military service, mission/service with a church or other organizations, KU will hold their scholarship until the next fall semester, as long a they don’t attend another college or university. Students that attend another school, will be considered a transfer student and will be considered for a transfer scholarship.

The Pell Advantage will not be awarded to any students that start after Fall 2021. Students that currently have Pell Advantage will have it as long as they meet renewal criteria — file your FAFSA by Feb 1 each year, be Pell Grant eligible, and maintain a 2.5 KU GPA with 24 earned KU hours each year. 

Private scholarships

A student may also obtain scholarships offered by private businesses, community organizations, and local and state governments.

Spring 2024 Essay Scholarship Contest

Contest Rules:

Students participating in the contest must enter an essay that meets the following requirements: o A maximum of 1500 words, o 12-point font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, o Must be submitted as plaintext o Each entry must be done individually and independently, representing each student’s own research thinking and writing, and. o Essay content is at the student’s discretion but must answer the question posed by the Office of the Securities Commissioner. Students may discuss what they hope to implement in their own life from the lessons learned in the financial literacy courses provided by their organization as it pertains to the question posed.

The 2024 question is as follows: If you were given $100,000 dollars today to invest for your future, what would you do with it? Describe how you would invest the money and how it would further your overall financial goals. Choose specific investing strategies and outline how you would employ them to grow your money. Explain the risks and associated frauds with the strategies and investments you have chosen. Finally, describe how investing is important to your overall financial health.

Each student who submits an essay to the contest must be: o a legal resident of Kansas in grade nine through 12; and o a participant in the organization’s financial literacy program.

• The Essay will be scored using the following formula for a total of 55 points: o Clear financial goals (10 points). Student clearly states their financial goals and explains how investing helps them achieve those goals. o Demonstration of investing plan (15 points). Student outlines a specific and diverse investment strategy and explains why they chose them. o Knowledge of risk and investment fraud (15 points). Student identifies specific risks and frauds associated with their chosen investment types. o Overall demonstration of financial literacy (10 points). Student demonstrates a strong understanding of financial literacy topics. o Grammar and spelling (5 points). Student writes clearly and effectively, with few or no grammatical or spelling errors.

The three students with the top three essays submitted by the Kansas Council on Economic Education will receive the following awards: o First-place Essay – $5,000 o Second-place Essay – $3,000 o Third-place Essay – $2,000

The First-place essay will be automatically evaluated with essays submitted from other organizations to determine overall statewide scholarship awardees, with the same awards as those at the organizational level (i.e., $5,000 for the statewide first-place essay, $3,000 for the statewide second place essay, and $2,000 for the statewide third-place essay.

Scholarships will be awarded to a Kansas 529 account for use by the student as allowed by law.

Submission to KCEE is required by Friday, February 23 . To enter, teachers must submit their student’s essay and entry form (found at link below) online at https://forms.gle/LSB2P6pgmoYr9oFbA Only submissions made before 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 23 (Deadline extended to Tuesday, February 27) will be eligible.

Applications Open for Kansas Wheat Scholarships Honoring Industry Leaders

High school seniors and current Kansas college students have until Friday, March 15, 2024, to apply for one of two $1,000 scholarships from Kansas Wheat honoring industry leaders Herb Clutter and David Radenberg. The scholarships — each worth $1,000 — continue a proud tradition of supporting the future of the Kansas wheat industry. 

“Inspired by the enduring legacies of Herb Clutter and David Radenberg, Kansas Wheat is proud to help empower the next generation of the Kansas wheat industry,” said Justin Gilpin, CEO of Kansas Wheat. “Through these scholarships, we honor the passion of these industry leaders and help to provide opportunities for future leaders in agriculture.”

Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship

Administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers (KAWG), the Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship will award one $1,000 scholarship per year to a college or university-bound incoming freshman from Kansas pursuing a career in the field of agriculture. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must plan to be a full-time student at any two or four-year Kansas college or university. 

Recipients will be selected based on academic achievement, leadership qualities and career objectives focused around the field of agriculture. The scholarship will be toward tuition for the student’s college or university education. The scholarship is non-renewable.

The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers, and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family. Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.

Apply for the Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship by completing the scholarship application at kswheat.com/clutter. The application includes a 400-500 word essay discussing why the applicant has chosen to pursue a career in agriculture. The selection committee will use this essay, along with the student’s application, in determining the scholarship winner. 

David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship

The David Radenberg Memorial Scholarship will award one $1,000 scholarship to a current undergraduate or graduate student from Kansas who is pursuing a career in the field of agriculture. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career related to the improvement of wheat, including but not limited to wheat genetics, wheat agronomics, wheat breeding, plant pathology, Extension and bioinformatics. 

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student at any two- or four-year college or university in Kansas. Incoming freshmen or transfers are not eligible. 

David Radenberg was a lifelong wheat farmer in Claflin, Kansas, where his family has farmed for more than 100 years. He represented central Kansas on the Kansas Wheat Commission from April 2011 to March 2020, including serving as chairman from August 2018 to May 2019. Radenberg was also a founding board member of the Kansas Wheat Commission Research Foundation.

During his tenure as a commissioner, he supported wheat research and international marketing efforts, including attending the 31st annual Latin American Millers Conference in Lima, Peru, in 2013. At the time, he expressed how he enjoyed sharing with millers, bakers and merchandisers about the research investments Kansas farmers are making to provide a better-quality product. 

In 2013, Radenberg also visited multiple Pacific Rim countries to promote U.S. wheat. The contrast between third-world poverty he saw in thriving modern cities left an impression on him and reinforced his support of wheat research to help feed a hungry world.

Yet, despite their widespread appeal, online courses aren’t for everyone . Here are some factors to consider before you apply.

Learning Style

Succeeding in an online learning environment requires staying focused and organized while watching lectures and completing assignments without the face-to-face interactions you’d get in a traditional classroom. You’ll need a quiet, distraction-free place to concentrate and the motivation to log in when you may be tired from your other life and work obligations.

Also, while many online programs offer plenty of virtual opportunities to interact with peers, you may miss the social aspect of attending these activities face-to-face.

Some colleges provide a special online tuition rate, making online learning more affordable if you’re not a Kansas resident. Also note that you won’t incur costs typically related to attending college in person, including on-campus housing, commuting and parking fees.

At first glance, earning your degree online may seem less expensive than a traditional degree, but there are additional costs to consider. Along with technology expenses, such as a computer and high-speed internet access, some colleges charge a distance learning fee.

Research Awards & Scholarships

The paul a. kitos opportunity in molecular biosciences research.

Established by colleagues and former students in honor of Dr. Paul Kitos, Emeritus Professor of Molecular Biosciences. Dr. Kitos retired from the Department of Biochemistry (now part of Molecular Biosciences) in 1996 after 37 years of teaching. This award is used to enhance research opportunities for undergraduate students working in Molecular Biosciences.

This fund shall be used to provide awards for deserving undergraduates in Molecular Biosciences. These awards are based on achievement in a research laboratory.

Nathan B. Parker, Ph.D., Student Award in Biology

This award was established in memory of Nathan B. Parker, Ph.D., through the generosity of his family and friends. Dr. Parker earned his bachelor’s and Ph.D. in microbiology at KU, after which he began a biology teaching career at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas.

This $1000 award gives preference to graduating biology seniors who are pursuing acceptance to a master’s or Ph.D. program in biology or a related field. Award funds are meant to help alleviate financial costs associated with program application fees, moving expenses, or costs of attending an academic/scientific conference

Howieson Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Opportunity

The Howieson Opportunity Fund has been established to assist KU undergraduate students who wish to travel to off-campus research laboratories, field research sites, or academic/scientific conferences.

Eligibility: Any undergraduate student conducting research in the biological sciences at the University of Kansas is eligible. Priority is given to applications that include active research and/or intent to present papers/posters at scientific conferences. The amount of the award will be based on a budget provided by the student (budget cap of $1500).

Academic Awards & Scholarships

Nelson opportunity award.

The Ken and Helen Nelson Opportunities in the Biosciences Award will be present $1500 to an undergraduate student studying biological sciences at the University of Kansas. Priority is given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.

The Lance S. Foster Outstanding Junior in Biology Award

Established in 1989 through contributions received from family and friends of Lance S. Foster. Lance was a native of Stillwater, Oklahoma, and a transfer from Oklahoma State University. He earned his bachelor's degrees (granted posthumously in 1989) in Systematics and Ecology and Political Science from The University of Kansas. Lance lived in Stephenson Scholarship Hall for three years of his undergraduate studies and was actively involved in scholarship hall government; he also rose to the highest student position of program director at radio station KJHK. Lance supplemented his course work through his involvement with the KU Democrats and Biology Club. He was also voted a life member of Phi Beta Kappa. In his spare time, Lance enjoyed playing guitar, running, and intramural sports. He died on May 7, 1989, at the age of 23. 

Through the generosity of the Foster family, the KU Undergraduate Biology Program will present an award of $1000 to an outstanding KU Junior majoring in biology and planning on further study or work in any area of biology

Robert Tweed Hersh Memorial Scholarship Award in Human Biology

Established in memory of Professor R. T. Hersh to honor an outstanding graduating senior in the Human Biology program whose course of study best exemplifies the interdisciplinary nature of the scientific study of humans, their origins, development, biology, and behavior. The idea for a human-oriented biology curriculum grew from Dr. Hersh's interaction with undergraduate students and discussions with colleagues. Dr. Hersh was Director of the Human Biology Program until his retirement in 1995. During his tenure at KU, Dr. Hersh was chair of the Biochemistry Department (now part of Molecular Biosciences). His dedication to teaching earned him an Outstanding Educator Award in 1973 and the Chancellor's Career Teaching Award in 1991.

The Undergraduate Biology Program will present this award of $1500 to an outstanding graduating senior with Honors in Human Biology, who has demonstrated interest in Fine Arts. This can include: Music, Visual Arts, Theatre and Film & Media Studies.

The Pauline Kimball Prize for an Outstanding Woman Senior in Biology

Established through a gift from Dr. Pauline Kimball Skinner of Newark, Delaware. Dr. Kimball graduated from KU in 1919; she studied for three years and served as an assistant instructor at the University of Iowa. She received her doctorate in 1928 from New York University, after which she became head of the department of biology at Women's College, University of Delaware. Following her marriage to Dr. Glenn S. Skinner in 1930, she retired from teaching and developed an interest in the work of patriotic societies.

Through the generosity of Pauline Kimball, the KU Undergraduate Biology Program will present an award of $500 to a female or female identifying graduate who is expected to go on to a higher degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology.

The Smiley Gilligan Family Fund for the Biosciences

This fund will present $1500 to an undergraduate student studying biological sciences at the University of Kansas. Priority is given to applicants with demonstrated financial need.

Other Undergraduate Biology Scholarships & Awards 

The ida h. hyde scholarship for women in science.

The Ida H. Hyde Research Scholarship fund provides up to 8 annual awards for an (upper-class or graduate) woman student in biology to provide an opportunity “…to study in a marine laboratory, or any biological, chemical or physical research laboratory, offering environment and advantages different from those found in the University of Kansas….” (e.g., the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole.)

• Personal statement outlining past accomplishments, a brief description of the research objectives, the study location, and a description of the benefits to be derived from the opportunity to study elsewhere. Also include the date of your trip, and when you would need the scholarship money by.
• Estimated budget, including potential sources of other funding (Ida H. Hyde Scholarship ranges from $500 - $3000)
• Preference will be given to first time recipients

Erma Reed Peterson Scholarship for Pre-medicine Seniors

Through the generosity of the Peterson family, Undergraduate Biology will present a $1000 tuition scholarship for one semester to an outstanding pre-medicine senior.

All KU pre-medicine seniors graduating in May 2024 are eligible.

The award winner will be chosen primarily based on scholastics, community service, and preparation for a career in health care Preference will be given to students with an interest in genetics, and who come from Saline and McPherson counties in Kansas. Applicants will also be evaluated based their scholastics achievements, community service, and overall preparedness for a career in health care.

• One-page essay outlining past accomplishments and career aspirations. In addition, describe your interest in genetics, and mention any connection to Saline or McPherson counties, if any.
• Please provide a Letter of Recommendation from a KU Professor or Lecturer who teaches a biology class.

Critical Language Scholarship s cover all costs of attending Intensive Summer Institutes through the United States Department of State. Languages offered include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish, and Urdu.

George Gould Undergraduate Research Award in Entomology (offered by Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology)

Dr. George E. Gould graduated from the University of Kansas in 1929 with a degree in Entomology and was generous enough to bequeath funds from his estate to support KU undergraduate students interested in pursuing research with an entomological focus, under the general guidance of a member of the graduate faculty.  The Gould Award is not intended to provide faculty members with assistants, but students may well be associated with faculty research projects as independent investigators.  The George Gould Undergraduate Research Award in Entomology is awarded on the merit of the applicant's proposal, the applicant's academic record, and recommendations from faculty members who are familiar with the applicant and the proposed project.
