Introduction
Interpersonal and other forms of conflicts are essential, natural, and unavoidable human phenomenon in both homogeneous and diverse societies as daily life increasingly brings individuals with different backgrounds, cultures, values, morals, beliefs, ethics, personalities, and objectives into contact with one another (Ghaffar 2009 ; Turnuklu et al. 2009 ). This diversity often leads to conflicting situations by and between individuals, organizations, entities, and nation states. In the context of conflict, Doğan ( 2016 ) points out that the occurrence of conflicts in every environment in which humans are present appears to be quite normal. In fact, Doğan ( 2016 ) posits that the genesis of conflict is equivalent to the history of humanity. Instructively, just as conflicts have been in existence for centuries, so too are attempts at their resolution. But what is conflict and what is conflict resolution?

This paper explores the pivotal role of the United Nations (UN) in resolving both regional and international disputes. The UN serves as a global platform for diplomacy and conflict resolution, employing various mechanisms such as negotiation, mediation, and peacekeeping to facilitate dialogue and find sustainable solutions. Through its Charter principles, the UN promotes peaceful coexistence among nations and encourages the peaceful settlement of disputes. By engaging member states and fostering collaboration, the organization plays a crucial role in preventing conflicts from escalating and contributing to global stability. This abstract delves into the UN's multifaceted efforts to address and mediate conflicts on both regional and international scales, highlighting its significance in promoting peaceful resolutions and maintaining global harmony.

The phenomenon of international conflict that occurred after the Cold War opens the United Nations' opportunity to play a more significant role in maintaining international peace and security. UN peacekeeping operations are one form of response to the challenges that arise at this time. This operation is a multidimensional operation that includes peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding activities. The complexity of the conflict in Sierra Leone, West Africa, in the early 90s was caused by poor governance and illegal exploitation of diamonds, resulting in large numbers of civilian casualties and various other problems, such as rising poverty and unemployment increasing numbers of refugees. Given the Sierra Leonean government’s powerlessness in resolving the conflict, the UN, about international organizations, intervened in restoring and achieving peace. In this article, the author tries to analyze the role of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone to resolve Sierra Leone’...

The 21st century has witnessed a significant shift from 'old wars' to what British academic Mary Kaldor has termed 'new wars'. Characteristic of the post-Cold War era, these new wars involve a multitude of complex factors and actors at various levels that instigate and sustain war and violence. Among other things, it is the longer lasting nature of new civil wars as compared to old wars, having vast psychological, economic, cultural and social impact at the grassroots level, that necessitates their in-depth study to provide relevant information as a prerequisite for peacemaking and peacebuilding efforts. The ongoing third civil war in South Sudan is one such New War. South Sudan, the youngest nation of the world, caught attention as it emerged out of a referendum gaining an almost 100% consensus for its independence. The possibility of a country, emerging from a consensus so massive, being crippled by civil war was unexpected. However, within five years of its independence, a conflict between two political groups had emerged, overriding other state concerns. Despite attempted implementation of multiple peace agreements, the conflict continues to soar through, negating any attempt at mediation or negotiation. The paper begins with an analysis of the two major peace agreements viz. Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (2015) and Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan to resolve the South Sudan conflict (2018). It then seeks to examine other possible means of conflict resolution by attempting to draw parallels between theories of conflict resolution given by J.V. Monteville, Morton Deutsch, William Zartman and Johan Galtung and the empirical reality of the peace process in South Sudan. Hence, this paper is significant not only in terms of its contribution to literature on conflict resolution and peacebuilding but also in aiding comprehension of prospective paths to a stable future for the conflict torn communities in this country.

The United Nations was set up for the primary purpose of maintaining international peace and security; its emergence became necessary as a result of the experiences of the world following the atrocities committed during Second World War. The allied powers came together following the failure of the League of Nations in tackling crimes perpetuated during the Second World War. The United Nations in accordance with one of its principles will not interfere in the affairs of a State. However, the emergence of international human rights law has put to test this article especially when States violate human rights of its citizens; thus, the United Nations has found itself being accused of not been proactive in responding to situations that endanger human rights of citizens; it is in this vein that the United Nations has responded in certain situations in the internal conflicts of some states especially when non-interference results in gross violation of human rights and also threatens peace and security. This paper will therefore chronicle the intervention (s) of the United Nations in stemming internal conflicts. It argues that the role the UN has adopted in managing internal conflicts is in tandem with the purpose of its establishment
