Homework Lesson Summary Notes and Explanation in English Class 9th

Introduction:

‘Homework’ is a short prose piece. As the title suggests, it revolves around homework, or rather, the limitations that accompany it.

About the Author:

The author of this text is unknown.

The theme of this text revolves around the education system. The harms of burdening children with excessive homework have been starkly highlighted here. This prose piece aims to bring awareness by bringing this issue to light.

Counter-productive:

The text begins with how the concept of homework had historically begun with the well-intentioned notion of helping children learn what they had learnt at school better. However, too much homework is seen to be counter productive as spending too much time in then can limit the time that child spends with their friends, family and extracurricular activities. Author Tamim Ansary has in fact stated how the amount of homework has substantially increased by more than fifty percent in recent times. Homework getting increased with higher classes is alarming.

Excessive homework, Excessive weight:

Teachers, however, continue to claim that homework is indeed beneficial. As Dr. Kralovec states, doing excessive homework has no impact in students or their process of joining college whatsoever. In addition, large amounts of homework implies that students are to carry a lot of weights, in some cases, more that 15% of their body weight! Statics reveal that this leads to acute problems such as chronic shoulder, neck and back pain in their later life.

Insufficient sleep and Obesity:

This pressure leads to children staying up well into the night in pursuit of completing their homework. While some parents and teachers argue that this is good for improving the children academically, what it leads to in reality is children lacking the amount of exercise they require. This leads to obesity, which in turn makes them the subject of ridicule and inferiority complex. Statics show an increase in obesity in children, a major cause for concern indeed.

Lack of time also means that the children, as said before, are unable to partake in extracurricular activities. Nor are they able to spend adequate time with their family. Homework thus severely affects them, both physically and mentally.

Negativity:

What excessive homework also leads to is children losing interest in the subjects they study. Dire consequences such as indulging in malpractices, in fact, stem from this cause, starting from copying assignments to copying in examinations. This sets off as a bad start to their lives.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the text ends by stating that homework should be given at a limited rate. While giving excess homework has its disadvantages, it does not imply that homework should be done away with altogether. Rather, homework must be given but must be given in a way enjoyable to children instead of stressing them incessantly.

How Should Your 9th Study Schedule Be Planned?

live classes for class 9

Class 9 is not as challenging as other high school classes, yet it is nevertheless crucial to every student’s future because it serves as a building block for classes higher up. Students learn the fundamentals of the ideas they will study in-depth in class 10 and even in classes 11 and 12. So, it’s critical to have a fundamental comprehension and grasp of the topics in order to perform well in high school.

Many students are curious about how to excel in class 9 and stand out from the crowd. Due to concurrent events, students, like those in any other class, find it challenging to plan out their study time. Every day, they must go to school, receive coaching, and study for coveted tests.

Tips For Class 9 CBSE Exams

  • Create a Time Table – The first step in preparing for any exam is to create a daily schedule for class 9 students. Always pay attention to your strong and weak points when creating a schedule. Give the subjects you find challenging extra time.

Setting aside Time for Each Subject – It’s necessary to start with all the subjects to avoid exam stress. Create your schedule so that you won’t miss any classes, whether they are in Hindi, English, Math, Science, or Social Science. Yet, since they are rather challenging and require practice, you can devote more time to courses like math and science. The best is that you can take online classes for class 9 and study just by sitting at your home.

Self-Study time: School students typically struggle to organize their own study time because they must routinely attend classes and coaching’s. But you still have around 6-7 hours after school and practice that you can use for independent study. As a result, schedule your day in accordance with this time window. Spend at least five hours each day studying.

How much sleep and study time should a student in class 9 get depends on the student. Now, as we already discussed, set aside some time after school for independent study and get enough rest.

Homework and schoolwork – It is crucial to review what you have learnt in order to understand the material. Every day, students must do their assignment. Although it won’t take long, try to finish your homework as soon as you get home so you have time for other things.

Study Material – Get organized with your study materials now rather than waiting until the last minute. Exam performance is crucial. You may also consult other books, but keep NCERT in mind as you study. You can choose best learning app for class 9 like Tutopia Learning App for your Study material.

Playtime —Physical movement is just as important as academic study, and ninth grade isn’t that difficult that you can’t find time to have fun. It’s crucial to schedule at least an hour of playtime because exercise helps to keep the mind fresh.

Weekly tests should be part of your study programme because they identify the subjects that require more effort. On weekends, try administering one self-assessment test; you can prepare by solving practice questions.

If you study methodically, it’s fairly simple to achieve a 90 or higher in class ninth. Beginning early and rigorously adhering to the schedule can help you achieve good grades. The secret to doing well on your scholarship exams and in the ninth grade is self-discipline and perseverance.

Yet, there is no need to put undue mental strain on yourself by adhering to a rigid schedule, especially at this time when you don’t have to worry about taking the board exams or competing with other students for top grades. Just concentrate on learning the basics and using study tips for class 9 CBSE, since this will help to raise standards.

Answer: (i) “They” refers to the students centuries ago.

(ii) “Regular” means the usual for the people in 2157. Here, regular teacher means the mechanical teacher.

(iii) The mechanical teacher is contrasted with humans as teachers of earlier times.

III. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).

Question 1. What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?

Answer: Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. The mechanical teachers had big screens on which all the lessons were shown and questions were asked. The children were taught through computer and television screens. They did not have humans as teachers.

Question 2. Why did Margie’s mother send for the County Inspector?

Answer: Margie’s mother sent for the County Inspector because the mechanical teacher of Margie was not functioning properly. It kept giving Margie Geography tests and Margie was performing worse every time. Margie’s mother was concerned and thus sent for the County Inspector.

Question 3. What did he do?

Answer: The County Inspector smiled at Margie and gave her an apple. He took the mechanical teacher away from her. Then he fixed the mechanical teacher. Question 4. Why was Margie doing badly in geography? What did the County Inspector do to help her?

Answer: Margie was doing badly in geography because the questions that were displayed on the screen of the mechanical teacher were too quick for her age.

The County Inspector slowed its speed to an average ten-year level so that Margie would be able to perform satisfactorily.

Question 5. What had once happened to Tommy’s teacher?

Answer: Tommy’s teacher had to be taken away altogether for a month as the history sector had blanked out completely.

Question 6. Did Margie have regular days and hours for school? If so, why?

Answer: Yes, Margie had regular days and hours for school because Margie’s mother believed that little girls learned better if they learned at regular hours.

Question 7. How does Tommy describe the old kind of school?

Answer: Tommy says that the old kind of school had special buildings. All the kids went to that building for studying.

Question 8. How does he describe the old kind of teachers?

Answer: He tells Margie that the old kind of teachers were humans instead of machines. The human teacher would educate the boys and girls and give them homework and ask questions.

IV. Answer each of these questions in two or three paragraphs (100 –150 words).

Question 1: What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?

Answer: The main features of the mechanical teachers that Margie and Tommy have are as follows:

The mechanical teachers have big black screens on which lessons are displayed and questions are asked. The students need to put their homework and test papers in a slot that is present in the mechanical teacher. The students write answers in punch code and the mechanical teacher calculates the results right away.

The main features of the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have are given below:

In the story, the schools are there in the homes. For instance, Margie’s school was right next to her bedroom. The students do not have classmates. They study subjects like arithmetic, history, geography, etc. The mechanical teacher would turn on at the same time every day except on the weekends.

Question 2: Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?

Answer: Margie hated school because she felt it boring. The mechanical teacher started the class at the same time regularly. Margie’s mechanical teacher was giving her test after test on Geography and she was performing badly.

Margie also did not like inserting homework and test papers in the slot on the mechanical teacher.

She thought that the old kind of school must have been fun because it would have had kids from various places of the neighbourhood. It would have been so interesting to sit together in the classroom and leave the school together at the end of the day. All the kids learned the same things so they could help each other in studies and homework.

Question 3: Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

Answer: Yes, I agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story. In the story, the schools are in the students’ homes. This gives no space for interaction between students. Studying from screen and taking up tests sounds boring. Inserting homework and test papers in a slot on a mechanical teacher every day is monotonous. Writing answers in punch codes is even more draining.

Learning together in a class gives students a wider view of the people. Students also get familiar with others and learn how to interact and socialize. Getting taught by human teachers is way more dynamic than being taught by a machine. If there is any issue with any lesson or concept, the student can ask the human teacher then and there. But, mechanical teachers are programmed with a certain lesson and concept for a particular day. When the student solves homework, he/she can get help from classmates. That’s how the schools today are more fun than the school in the story.

Thinking about Language

differently:

“But my mother says a teacher has to be adjusted to fit the mind of each boy and girl it teaches and that each kid has to be taught differently.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it,” Margie said quickly. She wanted to read about those funny schools.

nonchalantly:

“Maybe,” he said nonchalantly.

For the motion

I would like to put forth my views in favour of the motion “The Schools of the Future Will Have No Books and No Teachers!”

The emergence of digital technologies like computers, laptops, mobile phones, etc. has brought about a lot of changes in the way education is imparted and received. Now itself, we can see how important the electronic gadgets and internet have become. We learn so many things through Google, YouTube and other platforms. The concept of online classes is getting more acknowledgement than ever. The internet speed is improving with time and usage. More and more people are being drawn towards the limitless possibilities of learning online. Gradually, we might see the schools teaching the students online with soft copies of books.

When the robots become a part of our lives, we shall see the time when the schools will have no real books and no human teachers. Instead, we will have online books and robots as teachers!

Thinking about the Poem

Question 1. Where does the traveler find himself? What problem does he face?

Answer: The traveler finds himself at a point in the woods where two roads diverge. The problem is that he cannot travel both the roads and thus he has to choose one between them.

Question 2 . Discuss what these phrases mean to you.

(i) a yellow wood

(ii) it was grassy and wanted wear

(iii) the passing there

(iv) leaves no step had trodden black

(v) how way leads on to way

(i) The phrase “a yellow wood” indicates a forest during the autumn season.

(ii) The phrase “it was grassy and wanted wear” means that the road was full of grass as it has been less travelled. As people haven’t walked on it, it is yet to wear out.

(iii) The phrase “the passing there” refers to people walking on that road.

(iv) “Leaves no step had trodden black” indicates that the fallen leaves had not been crushed under the feet of the travelers.

(v) The phrase “how way leads on to way” means that one road leads to another. So once the poet has made a choice between the two roads, he wonders if he will ever be able return to the same spot and choose the other road.

Question 3 . Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them:

(i) in stanzas two and three?

(ii) in the last two lines of the poem?

(i) No, there is no difference between the two roads as the poet describes them in stanzas two and three as he says “the passing there had worn them really about the same” and that “equally lay in leaves no step had trodden black…”

(ii) In the last two lines of the poem, the poet indicates a difference between the two roads as he says that he took the road that was less travelled by and that has made a huge difference in his journey.

Question 4 . What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it?)

Answer: The last two lines of the poem talk about taking a decision and accepting its consequences- good or bad. The poet chose the road that was less travelled by, which indicates he took a decision that people would not take generally.

He says in the last line of the poem that his choice of taking the road less travelled by has made all the difference. He does not seem to regret his choice.

Question 1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice (or do you think you will have difficult choices to make)? How will you make the choice (for what reasons)?

Answer: We all make choices on a daily basis. But I have not had to make a difficult choice till date.

I will have to face challenges in the years to come as I grow up. Then, I will have to make difficult choices. I will have to choose my profession, my area of interest, etc.

I think when such a situation comes, I will not just follow the herd. I will think it through and just like the poet, if required, I will take up the unexplored paths.

Question 2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?

Answer: There is no point in regretting or thinking about what might have been. Such thoughts will always keep us in the hold of the past and never let us see the benefits of the choices we made. Accepting reality is the best way to overcome any situation.

2024 NFL Draft Rumors: ‘Jaguars Have Explored Moving Up’ and Done Homework on Top WRs

According to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, the Jaguars have done their homework on the top receivers in the class and have even considering a trade-up.

  • Author: John Shipley

It is officially draft week.

In just a few short days, the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft will kickoff and the futures of all 32 teams will change and take shape.

For the Jacksonville Jaguars, could that future involve a blockbuster trade for a No. 1 wide receiver? Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer suggests it could.

"The Jaguars have explored moving up—and they’ve done a lot of work on the top receivers in the draft," Breer said.

"Losing Calvin Ridley, even with Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis paid, makes that spot a priority. Failing that, corner, if either Arnold or Mitchell are available here, shapes up as a possibility, too. Another would be a disruptive defensive tackle for new DC Ryan Nielsen’s scheme—maybe Murphy, if he slides a bit, or Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton (who’s coming off a foot fracture)."

The top wide receivers in the draft include the likes of Ohio State's Marvin Harrison Jr., Washington's Rome Odunze, and LSU's Malik Nabers. Nabers has been commonly linked to the Jaguars, with team sources indicating to Jaguar Report this offseason that the Jaguars are extremely high on the SEC standout.

“I think it’s a very good group of receivers, obviously. I think those three that everybody is talking about are really good football players," Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke said last week.

"I think there’s some guys in the next wave that are really good football players, too. I think there’s good players like that all the way through the draft in that position. There’s going to be some later round guys that make a mark for themselves at some point in their careers in this league as well. It’s a good group, there’s a lot of variations of guys, guys strictly in the slot, guys strictly out on the perimeter. There are some guys that can move around the formations a little bit more. It’s a good group of receivers.”

Baalke has traded up just three times in his career with the Jaguars. Only one such occurrence happened in the first round, with Baalke trading up to No. 27 to select linebacker Devin Lloyd during the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Well, if you talk to the analytics people, they’ll tell you never move up. Acquire as many darts as you can, keep moving back. You just got to look at the board and let the board speak," Baalke said.

"We spent 360-something days putting this thing together and to try to make something happen and force something to happen, sometimes backfires on you. You chase something and it doesn’t pan out, so you lose out there and then you lose out on the guy you would’ve picked and the two guys you would’ve picked with the other picks you gave up. If you’re going to move up, you better be right.”

Blue Cross Transgender Coverage Lawsuit Draws Interest on Appeal

By Jacklyn Wille

Jacklyn Wille

A decision requiring Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois to reprocess denied claims for gender-affirming care drew criticism from religious and business-focused groups in briefs urging the Ninth Circuit to undo the ruling.

The insurer’s appeal asks the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to review a decision saying Blue Cross violated the Affordable Care Act’s antidiscrimination rules by applying categorical exclusions for certain gender-affirming services, along with a ruling requiring it to cover this care in the future. According to Blue Cross, these decisions force it to administer certain self-funded health plans—those in which medical claims are ...
