IELTS Writing Task 2 : Obesity in Children/ Child obesity

Ielts writing task 2.

In many countries, people are concerned about the number of children who are overweight.  What do you think are the causes of this? What solutions can you suggest?

Write at least 250 words.

Model Essay 01 :

Gaining weight, especially in young teenagers, is a major concern in many countries. Children become fat because of modernization and technology advancement. This essay will discuss the problems of obesity in young people and the responsibilities of the government, society, and parents in this regard.

The major causes giving rise to this problem are the change in our lifestyle due to the remarkable advances in technology, which has a considerable impact on our daily life and health. Children consume junk foods at any time, and it makes matters worse. These foods, which are easily available, often contain ingredients that are high in calorie, cholesterol, and fat, while lacking necessary vitamins, minerals, and proteins. These factors are taking a toll on their health. In addition, teenagers spend most of the on their computers rather than playing outside. As a result, teenagers are lacking exercise and becoming overweight.

In my opinion, teachers, parents, and the government as a whole should consider this issue and take the necessary steps. For instance, parents should keep an eye on the eating habits of their children and ensure that they eat healthy food and reduce their intake of junk food. The government could limit junk food advertising to prevent children from falling prey to bad eating habits.

Model Essay 02 :

In some countries, including the USA and Britain, a large number of children are overweight. This is due to a combination of poor diet and lack of exercise.

Children tend to be attracted to food that is high in sugar and fat, such as various forms of fast food. They also tend to be ignorant of what constitutes a healthy diet. Although parents may try to guide their children, they cannot be present always. As a result, children are influenced by other factors, such as advertising by fast-food companies.

On top of that, children are much less active than they used to be. While in the past young people took part in activities that burned a considerable amount of energy, children today spend their time indoors, sitting at computers or playing video games. They have no opportunity to burn the calories they are taking in, leading to obesity.

There are a number of steps that need to be taken to solve this problem. The first is to educate children about nutrition. Schools should organize compulsory lessons to explain the main elements of a healthy diet and teach the pupil how to prepare simple but healthy meals. The government should also place restrictions on the type of advertising allowed during children’s TV programs.

Children also need to be encouraged to participate in sports. Again, schools have a large role to play in this, by offering a wide range of outdoor activities. Investment in local sports clubs by the government would also help in alleviating the problem.

IELTS Writing Task 2 essay with model answer

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic

The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years.   Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer :

In recent times, childhood obesity has become an issue in the western world , as it has increased by 20% in the last decade. In this essay, I will shed some light on the factors contributing to this problem and will also suggest some solutions for the same.

There are several reasons for pediatric obesity . Firstly, the widespread use of junk food as an alternative to healthy diet is one of the prominent causes. One good illustration of this, is the growing popularity of fast food chains and their increasing availability in most of the cities and towns in the western world. Secondly, it is also possible to say that the sedentary lifestyle adopted by many western families has affected their children, and this problem is significantly augmented by the children’s lack of exercise. Finally, although not a major cause , but the lack of parental control over the amount of time their children spend playing video games is also a contributing factor to childhood obesity .

child obesity ielts essay

However, solutions are available to tackle this problem. Firstly, schools should focus a great deal more on physical education programs. In fact, a recent study carried out in a group of primary schools in Sydney has concluded that, spending 30 minutes a day performing various physical activities by students has significantly reduced obesity among them by 25% in one year. Another possible solution is to encourage parents to restrict the amount of time allowed to their children for playing video games. A particularly good example here is the various applications which are released by consoles and personal computer operating systems used by parents to help organize their children`s schedule.

Thus, even though, childhood obesity is a growing problem in the western world, mainly caused by eating fast food, lack of physical activity and excessive video gaming, these problems are not insurmountable; since, schools and parents are able to solve these problems, and they could should start by considering the solutions suggested above.

IELTS essay, topic: Obesity is becoming common among children, give reasons and solutions (from Target Band 7 book)

  • IELTS Essays - Band 8

This essay was written on a topic from “Target Band 7” book (page 54, reprinted with permission).

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task

Obesity was once considered a disease of adults; however, it is becoming increasingly common among children. Why do you think this is happening? What can be done to help children stay healthy?

Write at least 250 words

child obesity ielts essay

For many years obesity was perceived as a condition occurring only in adult life. However, in recent years the number of children suffering from obesity has grown significantly. There are several causes and numerous solutions which can be used to tackle this worrying phenomenon, and this essay will present a couple of them.

While some reasons for childhood obesity are genetic, others include poor food choices exacerbated by easy availability of fast food, insufficient physical activity and a history of family members being overweight. Unlike the former, the latter factors can be changed, if the adults in the child’s life gain awareness and are willing to take action.

To begin with, health is a complex matter which requires a balanced approach. In other words, there isn’t a single solution to maintain health, on the contrary, it is rather a mixture of multiple factors, such as and regular physical activity. For this reason, increasing the awareness of healthy habits among children is a responsibility of utmost importance. What is more, it can be easily achieved through the education system.

On the other hand, children’s education might to stop the situation from worsening. Along with well designed health education schemes, we should also try to stop food companies from overusing sugar in products the young ones. It has been proven that more than 70% of the products available in an average supermarket contain dangerously high levels of white sugar. Sugar rich diet not only causes a significant weight gain, but also contributes to diseases, such as diabetes in young population.

To summarize, emphasis put on the awareness of healthy living among children is invaluable. Furthermore, combining healthy habits with stopping food companies from in products which are easily children can be effectively implemented by the governments. Positive outcomes of such measures taken today will definitely have a long lasting effect on the future generations.

This is a well developed response to the question. Relevant key points are included in the answer. Appropriate examples are also used to corroborate the writer’s point of view. Paragraphing is skillfully managed, information and ideas are logically sequenced. A wide range of vocabulary is used to allow certain flexibility and precision. Also, a variety of sentence structures is used. Accuracy of expression needs some attention (see corrections underlined in blue). Overall, the essay could achieve Band 8 in IELTS.

IELTS Writing task 2 | Childhood obesity

fat, fatty, food

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Childhood obesity is becoming a serious problem in many countries.

Explain the main causes and effects of this problem and suggest some possible solutions.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

The modern diet has changed dramatically over the last few decades. As a result, many countries are now experiencing an explosion in childhood obesity. In my opinion, the main causes of this worrying trend are poor dietary habits and a sedentary lifestyle which can lead to some serious future health problems.

Many parents now rely on convenience foods to give their children as they are too busy to cook. In addition, children consume far too much junk food such as McDonald’s and sweet drinks like Coca-Cola. These foods are often high in fat and sugar and if consumed in excess children will gain weight. Also, as hobbies have changed over the years children now get far less exercise as most of their time is spent indoors playing on a computer or games console, so they do not burn off the excess calories that they consume.

Obesity in children can have some serious implications for their future health. The extra weight that obese children carry can lead to joint problems as their bodies struggle to cope with the weight. Many children also have low self-esteem and resort to eating even more food which becomes a vicious circle. Moreover, being obese can lead to more serious problems such as diabetes or heart disease in adulthood.

There are a number of possible solutions that could address this current trend. Firstly, parents should take more responsibility for their children’s diet and introduce more healthy foods and limit the consumption of junk food. Schools could also play a vital role by reintroducing cookery classes and educate children about the benefits of a healthy diet. Another important factor is to increase the amount of exercise children do. Parents should encourage children to do more exercise and schools could increase the number of P.E. classes.

In conclusion, I believe a poor diet and lack of exercise are the major contributing factors to childhood obesity. However, if some of the measures offered above were undertaken this disturbing trend could be eradicated.

The first two sentences in the introduction give a little background on the topic while the last sentence clearly tells the reader what will be discussed in the essay.

All ideas have been extended in the body paragraphs with all ideas on topic. Specific examples have been given clearly in each paragraph for the causes, effects and solutions. Students can sometimes mix paragraphing up in this type of essay giving the effects and solutions in one paragraph.

A good range of transitions has been used – As a result/In addition/Also/Moreover/Another important factor. It is important not to overuse transitions as it makes the essay read very unnatural and will lower the band score for cohesion.

A good range of topic specific vocabulary has been used and grammar and punctuation have been used accurately throughout the essay.

Band 9 essay sample

There is a dramatic increase in the number of children suffering from obesity. This is mainly due to their sedentary lifestyle and excessive consumption of junk food. Encouraging children to get physically active by playing a sport and limiting their consumption of fatty foods is the most effective solution to this problem.

Children are becoming obese because they are eating a lot of junk food. Fast food joints have popped up even in villages. These foods have higher levels of calories, harmful preservatives and additives. Regular consumption of junk food leads to weight gain in children because they are consuming more calories than they burn. To make matters worse, children lead highly sedentary lives these days. They hardly flex a muscle. They do not walk to school or climb steps. Nor do they play a physical sport. Instead, they spend much of their time sitting in front of a gadget.

In order to control childhood obesity, parents have to limit their screen time and encourage them to play a physical sport such as soccer, tennis or badminton. Parents should also monitor what children have on their plates. These days in many families both parents work and have hardly any time to cook proper meals. Working parents should ensure that their children have access to healthy meals. They should find some time to cook or hire someone to do this for them. The government and media also need to launch campaigns to make both parents and children aware of the harmful consequences of eating too much fast food.

To conclude, children are gaining weight because they are consuming too much fast food and leading sedentary lives. By limiting their consumption of junk food and encouraging them to get more physically active, parents can curb childhood obesity to a great extent.

Band 9 IELTS sample essay about obesity

Home  »  IELTS BAND 9 ESSAYS  »  Band 9 IELTS sample essay about obesity

Obesity is a serious problem in many countries, especially in rich countries. Discuss ways to solve the problem. Provide specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

With the advent of urbanisation and the rise in popularity of fast food, there have been accompanying issues with rising obesity rates – especially in developed countries like England and the USA. After providing a careful analysis of why obesity has risen so sharply in these countries, I shall suggest a number of ways in which the obesity epidemic can be ameliorated.

To begin with, it should be unsurprising that fast food is incredibly popular in wealthy countries (like England and the USA). Due to the high levels of development in these countries, consumers possess more money and can therefore consume vast amounts of fast food without seriously diminishing their income.

For example, the American Dietary Association found that (compared to the average Indian household), the average American household has a six times larger budget for food per month. Consequently, it is to be expected that obesity rates are much higher in countries with larger amounts of wealth.

However, despite the severity of the obesity problem, there are a number of ways in which developed countries could battle it more effectively. Firstly, developed governments could put far more pressure on fast food outlets to provide healthy alternatives to hamburgers, french fries and soft drinks.

Secondly, public exercise initiatives could be advertised and promoted far more vigorously. Lastly, modules that inform teenagers about healthy dietary requirements could be taught at schools.

In conclusion, although obesity is a serious issue in the developed world, if the above steps are taken, the situation will surely improve in the coming years .

IELTS Writing Band 8 – Children and Obesity

IELTS essay, topic: Children these days are suffering from obesity, why and how can it be solved?

Modern children are suffering from the diseases that were once considered to be meant for adults only. Obesity is a major disease prevalent among children. What are its causes and what solutions can be offered?

Nowadays, the increasing rate of overweight children and adults is a worldwide health issue. Obesity is a major problem which is increasing day by day in school going children. There are various reasons behind it. This essay will discuss the causes of obesity and offer some solutions.

The first cause of obesity is junk food. It is often seen that mostly children are fond of burgers, pizzas, noodles and coke. These types of foods are easily available to them in school canteens. Children love to purchase chips, chocholates, – ice-cream for lunch. Moreover, in this modern era, parents are working and they do not have time to cook at home. Parents often buy dinner for their children instead of preparing food at home. This calorie-rich diet is making children obese. This problem can be solved by teaching children to cook healthy foods for themselves and banning junk foods and fizzy drinks in schools. This diet can be replaced by milk, juice and fruits for lunch.

The second cause of obesity is sedentry life style. It is true that the use of computers and television is increasing in children. They spend most of their time watching television or playing video games on a computer. This technological advancement has reduced the level of physical activity in this specific age group. This issue can be resolved by encouraging children to do physical exercises. Parents can take their children to park to encourage playing with friends. Furthermore, schools can add sports in their curriculum to maintain physical fitness in their students.

To sum up, it is clear that main causes of obesity are unhealthy eating and not enough physical activities. This ailment can be prevented and treated by healthy eating habbits and physical exercises.

This is a good essay. There are only a few minor errors that could have been easily prevented by proofreading this essay one last time before submission (mouse over the words underlined in blue shows corrections). Overall, this work seems worthy of IELTS Band 8. Keep up the good work!

Passage:"Childhood Obesity: A Multifaceted Challenge"

Childhood obesity has become one of the most significant public health challenges of the 21st century. This condition, characterized by an abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat that presents a risk to health, is not just a medical concern but a complex societal issue that reflects changes in our lifestyles, environment, and cultural practices.

The Scale of the Problem

Globally, the incidence of childhood obesity has increased at an alarming rate. According to the World Health Organization, the number of obese children and adolescents worldwide has risen tenfold in the past four decades. This surge is not confined to high-income countries; it is also a growing problem in low- and middle-income nations, often coexisting with undernutrition, creating a dual burden of malnutrition.

Causes of Childhood Obesity

The causes of childhood obesity are multifactorial, involving an interplay of genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Genetically, some children have a higher predisposition to gaining weight due to their genetic makeup. However, genetics alone cannot explain the recent rise in childhood obesity rates.

Behavioral factors play a significant role. The modern lifestyle, characterized by a decrease in physical activity and an increase in sedentary behaviors such as watching television and playing video games, contributes significantly to the caloric imbalance leading to obesity. Children today are less likely to engage in physical play and more likely to lead sedentary lives, a trend exacerbated by urbanization and the changing nature of leisure activities.

Dietary habits have also undergone a substantial transformation. There has been a global shift towards high-calorie, nutrient-poor foods with high levels of sugar and saturated fats, combined with a decrease in the consumption of healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This shift is largely driven by changes in the food system, including food production, distribution, marketing, and pricing, making unhealthy food choices more readily available, affordable, and appealing than healthier options.

Environmental factors also contribute to the epidemic. The built environment, including the availability of parks and recreational spaces, influences the level of physical activity. Additionally, socio-economic factors play a crucial role. There is a well-established link between socio-economic status and obesity, with children from lower-income families more likely to be obese due to limited access to healthy food options and safe spaces for physical activity.

Health Consequences of Childhood Obesity

The health implications of childhood obesity are profound. Obese children are at a higher risk of developing a range of health problems, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, orthopedic problems, asthma, and sleep apnea. Furthermore, childhood obesity often tracks into adulthood, increasing the risk of adult health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Apart from physical health, childhood obesity significantly impacts psychological well-being. Obese children are more likely to suffer from low self-esteem, negative body image, and depression. They are also more likely to be bullied or stigmatized, leading to social isolation and further psychological distress.

Strategies to Combat Childhood Obesity

Tackling childhood obesity requires a multi-pronged approach. At the individual level, interventions include promoting regular physical activity and healthy eating habits. Families play a crucial role in shaping these behaviors, and thus, parental involvement is key to the success of any intervention.

At the societal level, broader strategies involve creating environments that support healthy lifestyles. This includes implementing policies that promote the availability of affordable, nutritious foods and creating safe spaces that encourage physical activity. Schools are particularly important settings for such interventions, as they can provide healthy food options and incorporate physical activity into the daily routine of children.

Public health campaigns and education play a pivotal role in raising awareness about the risks of obesity and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Such campaigns can influence public attitudes and behaviors and create a culture that values health and well-being.

The Role of Policy and Legislation

Governments have a vital role to play in combating childhood obesity through policy and legislation. This can include regulating food advertising to children, implementing taxes on sugary drinks, and ensuring that healthy food options are available in schools. Additionally, urban planning policies can promote physical activity by creating walkable communities with access to parks and recreational facilities.

Obesity Essays

child obesity ielts essay

Overweight Children Essay

Parents of obese children should be punished for making their children overweight. Do you agree or disagree? It is argued that obese children’s parents should be held responsible and punished for making their children fat. They should be considerate about their children’s health. This essay agrees with this opinion because parents should take care of their children’s diet and should make them health cautious. Parents have the power to take control of their children’s diet and make them eat healthy food. This will fulfill their children’s body needs which will help in their growth. Eating junk food is bad for health and will make children fat when consumed excessively. Fast foods, for instance, burgers and pizzas will cause obesity over long-term consumption. Hence, parents should make a proper diet plan and make their children follow it. Parents, not only, should worry about their children’s health but should also make their children take care of themselves. Parents should make their children aware of the consequences of bad eating habits. They, for example, can show them what will happen to them like obesity if they consume junk food over a long period of time. This will make their children’s health cautious. In conclusion, I would say that parents should give priority to their children and their health over all other things. They can give their children a healthy life by making their children eat good and nutritious food and stay away from junk food. Otherwise, not only obesity but blood pressure and many other diseases will damage their children’s life. Hence, they should be held accountable for their children’s health and fitness.

Childhood Obesity- IELTS Reading Answers

Recent IELTS Reading Test with Answers - Free PDF

The Reading Module of the IELTS can be the top-scoring category, with diligent practice. To achieve the best results in this section, you must understand how to approach and answer the different Question types in the Reading Module. By solving and reviewing Sample Reading Questions from past IELTS papers, you can ensure that your Reading skills are up to the mark.

The IELTS reading passage contains the following question types,

Matching Heading

  • List Selection (A subset of MCQ)
  • Multiple Choice Question

Matching Heading-type questions are very common in the IELTS Reading passage, which tests the test-taker’s ability to recognize the primary idea of each passage. A list of headings will be provided, and the test-taker will be required to match these headings with appropriate paragraphs. To answer the Matching Heading questions, the test-taker can either read the heading first and then match the paragraph, or vice versa.

List Selection (A subset of MCQ)

List Selection type of question is a subset of multiple choice questions in the IELTS, which requires the test-taker to understand the main theme of the passage and select the statements which agree with the information in the passage.

Multiple Choice Question

The Multiple choice questions contain three to four options from which the test-taker should select the appropriate option. The MCQ type of question assesses a test-taker’s ability to understand the main idea and then look for particular information in the reading passage. Thus, the test-taker should scan the passage, comprehend the idea, locate keywords, identify paraphrasing, and answer the question.

14 Answer: C

Question type: Matching Heading

Answer location: Paragraph C

Answer explanation: When we read paragraph C, we understand that obese children are frequently taunted about their appearance and that negative body image causes depression and social issues. The biggest problem obese children encounter in their daily lives is low self-esteem or a lack of confidence in themselves and what they can do. Thus, the heading, ‘Feeling bad about yourself’ suits paragraph C.

15 Answer: G

Answer location: Paragraph G

Answer explanation: When we read paragraph G, we understand that weight management camps can be an excellent way to treat obesity. The paragraph also illustrates an example of parents consulting with their doctors about having their children undergo surgery to tackle obesity. Here, ‘tackle obesity’ refers to reducing weight. Thus, the suitable heading for Paragraph G is ‘Reducing Weight’.

16 Answer: H

Answer location: Paragraph H

Answer explanation: When we go through Paragraph H, we learn that each child grows at a different rate, and obese youngsters may ‘grow out of age’ as they get taller. However, there are few treatments for obese children under the age of seven years. For children aged eight to ten, there should be a medical evaluation to assess the severity of the problem. The older the child is, the less likely they are to grow out of it. Thus, the heading, “Age is a factor” suits paragraph H.

17 Answer: A

Answer location: Paragraph A

Answer explanation: The introductory paragraph A describes how fat cells are created and multiply. So, the “Fat cells” is an appropriate heading for Paragraph A.

18 Answer: A

Question type: List Selection

Answer location: Paragraph A, line 4

Answer explanation: The statement is supported by the fourth line of paragraph A, where it is mentioned that fat cells stop multiplying, resulting in an adult having a fixed number for the rest of their life, which means adults do not gain fat cells. Thus, statement A agrees with the information in Paragraph A.

19 Answer: C

Answer location: Paragraph C, line 2

Answer explanation: We can trace the keyword “Low self-esteem” in the second line of paragraph C, where it is mentioned that low self-esteem does not directly affect physical health, but it is the biggest problem in the life of obese children. Thus, the statement agrees with the information in Paragraph C.

20 Answer: D

Answer location: Paragraph D

Answer explanation: We find references to the keyword “gene” in Paragraph D, where it is mentioned that scientists clearly claim that both genes and environment play a role, which means genes and environment, play a role in the life of an obese child. Hence, the statement agrees with the information in Paragraph D.

21 Answer: F

Answer location: Paragraph F, line 2

Answer explanation: We can find references for the statement in Paragraph F, where the writer advises parents to teach their children about the health value of foods and make their home a healthy food zone. The writer also states that the child imitates themselves as their parent’s behavior and asks the parents to choose healthy food options whenever possible. Thus, the statement agrees with paragraph F.

22 Answer: H

Answer location: Paragraph H, line 2

Answer explanation: We can trace the information for the statement in the second line of paragraph H, where it is mentioned that children grow at different rates, and overweight children will grow out of it as they grow taller alone proves that some young children appear overweight when they are short and so as they grow taller with age, they tend to lose some weight or look slim. As a result, the information in paragraph H agrees with the statement.

23 Answer: A, B

Question type: Multiple Choice Question

Answer location: Paragraph B, line 2 & 5

Answer explanation: When we scan paragraph B, we can find references in the second and fifth lines where the writer has mentioned in the second line that obese children may suffer from sleep apnoea, and in the fifth line, it is stated that obese children may also develop diabetes. So, according to the statement, A and B are the correct answers.

24 Answer: A, B

Answer location: Paragraph D, line 3

Answer explanation: When we read paragraph D, we understand that environmental factors contributing to obesity include people being less physically active, accessibility of fatty and sugary foods, and average portion sizes becoming larger so that people can have more food to eat in restaurants. Thus, the correct answers are A and B.

25 Answer: A

Answer location: Paragraph E, line 5

Answer explanation: We find references in the 5th line of paragraph E, where the global traditions of giving children their favorite food as a reward for good behavior or good grades at school are mentioned. When we read the entire paragraph, the writer opines that using food as a reward is never a good idea as the child will learn to value these particular ‘treat’ foods and may turn to food for comfort. Thus, the answer is A.

26 Answer: A

Answer location: Paragraph F

Answer explanation: The first line in paragraph F states that forbidding certain foods can make them seem more attractive to children, which means forbidding foods will make children want more. Thus, the answer is A.
