Journal of the Nigerian English Studies

Ebuka Igwebuike

The authors investigate specific Nigerianisms in Nigerian English with a view to evaluating their grammaticality and acceptability. Data were collected from the responses of 192 educated Nigerians (male and female, 125 graduates and 67 undergraduates) in two Nigerian university settings, to an "acceptability and grammaticality" questionnaire designed for the study. Findings suggested that educated Nigerian users of English would not accept certain 'popular' grammatical constructions in Nigerian English, as many of them tend to violate specific grammatical rules of Standard English. The implications of the findings for codifying Nigerian English (NE) are considered along five significant dimensions: (a) the place of grammar (b) educated usage and standardization (c) choice of appropriate functional models for description, (d) systematic data collecting procedures, and (e) institutionalization of features Introduction Scholars' arguments have centered on whether Standard Nigerian English exists or not and whether Nigerian English comprises a bundle of errors when compared with Standard British English (Brosnaham, etc.). Like phonology, the domain of grammar has been observed to evince some significant differences between British and Nigerian English, such as omission and diverging use of articles, prepositions, and phrasal verbs; concord; modal auxiliaries; and pronouns. Thus, variations in the grammar of English have often been used as part of the data to support the claim of the emergence of Nigerian English, including its standard form.

This paper examined certain developmental patterns Nigerian English (NigE) demonstrates in recent times, particularly at the linguistic levels of morphology and syntax. While studying these current trends, a sociolinguistic approach, as enunciated and popularized by Labov (1966), was adopted. The principal source of data for the corpus was the use of 100 questionnaires containing 11 objective tests administered to the respondents. The first part of the work provided an overview of the place of NigE as one of the World Englishes, today, while the second part which is the core of the work is an examination of the nature of foray the typology has made on the construction and use of English by Nigerians of a broad social spectrum. The study established that the uniqueness of NigE is considerably realized in such linguistic features as conversion, acronym, composition, redundancy, coinage and reduplication. It was, as well, observed that some NigE forms exhibit the same morphological and...

In this paper, we present the result of a survey of the perceptions of, and attitudes to, some marked features of Nigerian English syntax and lexis by a sampled cross-section of students at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Our objectives were first, to test out the students' ability to recognize the range of variation between features of Nigerian English (NigE) on the one hand and those of native-speaker varieties such as British or American English (BrE/AmE) on the other. Secondly, to explore the attitudes of the respondents to the identified features of NigE and the value judgements that they pass on these features. Also, to facilitate a comparison, the respondents were drawn from students of English (who through their studies had supposedly acquired formal knowledge of the notion of variation in language) and others outside the discipline (who apparently lacked such formal knowledge, although presumably they were aware of the existence of Nigerian English or 'English as spoken and written by Nigerians'). The data collection procedure consisted of the administration of a questionnaire to 40 randomly polled students - 20 English majors and 20 from other disciplines. The survey gives useful insights into the perceptions of and attitudes to NigE as a global variety of English - by the generality of educated Nigerian speakers, rather than by the minority linguists formally studying and characterizing this variety.

Amechi Akwanya

The need for Nigerian national standard English language has often been emphasized as a means of improving user-competence among the younger generations of learners. But the enabling conditions have not been clearly identified or adequately investigated. The evolving of a national standard must be on the basis of the Received Standard, after it has been taught with care; on this foundation alone will innovation and experimentation to give the language a distinctly Nigerian flavour be fruitful. lt must be equally clear that the quest for a national English language standard will be very costly, in terms of ethnic consciousness and identity. For having a local standard of the foreign language will demand increasing use of it in public and restricted interactions. As a result, the competition with the local vernaculars will be heightened, with a likelihood of their being forced into a permanent minority status.

This study proposes a phonological variety of Nigerian English – Career Nigerian English (CNE). It is a variety spoken by those whose career-driven inclinations and latent talents have improved their spoken English in spite of their low level of education. The scope of this investigation is Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Recorded conversations of twenty interactants in television interview were assessed (analyzed) to ascertain their prowess in discrete components of skills in spoken English. Hinging on Electicism and Communication Accommodation Theory, this study concludes that so long as some interactants with less educational qualification performed better than those with higher educational qualification, the educational qualification of speakers of Nigerian English is not a reliable parameter for determining the standard variety as far as phonology is concerned
