Homework Planner Apps for Students

1. student planner- homework agenda & notes.

The first app on the list is a simple homework and notes management app. It keeps track of homework, assignments, projects, and to-do lists. The layout is minimal, all the tasks are neatly organized with a colored bookmark for easy identification. You can mark a task complete and remove it from the pending list.

Courses can be added easily and color-coded as well. The calendar shows any upcoming deadlines so you can prioritize accordingly. The tasks have a progress bar that you can adjust as you make progress which enables you to get a quick summary without actually opening every task.

You can also break your assignments in small chunks as subtasks that would make finishing a task much easier and the progress bar will fill automatically. It also allows you to attach media files to your assignments or projects for easy access to the important information in one place.

homework planner apps- agenda

  • Progress bar
  • Deadline Reminders
  • Calendar View
  • No option to sync data to the cloud

Student Planner is a great app for all the students, it has all the necessary features like Deadline reminders, subtasks, progress bar, color-coded tasks, and courses. It can significantly increase your productivity when used regularly. You can get this app for free in the Play Store.

2. Student Planner

Student Planner is another fast and simple homework management app which is wrapped by a beautiful and intuitive material designed UI. What Student Planner adds to the table is the inclusion of a schedule or time table which you can use to either store your class schedule or it might even be a study schedule for your exams.

You first start by adding your subject and the schedule then you can add an assignment or set a reminder. The due assignments are arranged as separate cards and can be swiped away once done with.

homework planner apps- Student Planner Android

  •  Simple and easy to get started with
  •  Fast and small in size
  •  Beautiful Minimal UI
  •  Option for Schedule
  • No sync/backup
  • Timetable implementation not perfect

I would recommend this app to anyone who is looking for a simple homework management app with timetable support and a minimal UI.

Install Student Planner ( Android )

Egenda is simple. Open the app, add all the classes or subjects to the app, and once that is set up, you have the option of adding a new Homework, Quiz, Project, or Test and choose the respective subject deadlines. The app also arranges the due work in cards that can be swiped away when done. But what I love the most about this app is that the fact it allows you to go subject-wise and view all your upcoming tests, projects, or pending assignments which is a huge convenience for planning your schedule ahead of time instead of the previous day.

Unfortunately, the app doesn’t have a timetable option, but in its latest update, it added a  Calendar View  where you can see your whole month at a glance with your assignments, tests, and projects.

homework planner apps- Egenda Android

  •  Subject-wise sorting
  •  Calendar View
  • No timetable support

Egenda provides some great tools for Homework and Test planning and I am sure anyone would find them extremely convenient and useful. But keeping its single con in mind, go for this app if you are not too keen on having a schedule or timetable.

Install  Egenda  ( Android  |  iOS )

4. ChalkBoard

The next app on our list is ChalkBoard, which I found out to be a pretty smart homework planner app. Chalkboard strikes a perfect balance between simplicity and features.

Although the setup process is a little longer than the previous three apps, as you have to feed meticulous details about the classes, teacher, and schedule. It is worth the effort.

On the home screen, you are shown upcoming classes, events tab, and upcoming tests. ChalkBoard fetches the dates for every subject from the Timetable for your future classes. Little features like these make the app stand out from the rest and give an overall great experience. You can also view classes and assignments subject wise.

homework planner apps- ChalkBoard Android

  • Proper Timetable
  • Ability to add teachers for subjects
  • View tomorrow’s classes as well as assignments/tests/quizzes
  • Smart features
  • Little longer to set up
  • No calendar view

If you are looking for a homework planner as well as a school planner, Chalkboard is the app as it strikes a great ground with almost all the features one might need while not being too bulky.

Install ChalkBoard ( Android )

5. School Planner

School Planner is a full-fledged planning application designed for students to manage their career as a student. Along with your homework and timetables, School Planner offers you to keep track of your grades and attendance, add contacts for teachers, add recorded lectures, and even multiple planners.

The app supports backing up of all your data via Google Drive, Calendar View along with a weekly report, attaching snapshots to your assignment reminders, student accounts from ClassViva, and a lot more. In spite of so many features, the app doesn’t feel slow at all and delivers a powerful performance with its beautiful design.

The 8 Best Homework Apps to Help Students Stay on Track

Get homework help from AI, fellow students, and even real tutors.

Whether you're a school student or a college student, homework is an essential part of the learning process. Fortunately, there are plenty of apps that can help you get your homework done, the only trouble is knowing which apps are best to download. If you're a student, read on to take a look at some of the best homework apps for Android and iPhone.

Do you need help with math, biology, history, or physics? Brainly is the homework app for you. Using the app for homework help is as straightforward as taking a photo, typing, or voice searching the question or equation and then waiting for an answer.

All the answers come from Brainly's online community of other students as well as experts from around the world. However, if you aren't happy with the answers, you also have the option to ask the app's AI tutor, Ginny.

Moreover, you can assist other students with their own homework by answering their questions. Which questions you help out with can be filtered according to school level and subject.

Download: Brainly for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

2. Photomath

Unlike Brainly, the Photomath app is a pretty straightforward homework app and has one single core focus—math. Photomath is truly one of the best apps to help you solve math problems , and it works similarly in that you merely have to scan the problem with your phone and the app gives you instant answers.

But Photomath doesn't stop there, the app actually breaks down the entire equation and gives you a step-by-step explanation of how it came to the solution. What's more, you can tap on each step to see an even more detailed animated lesson with voice instructions.

In addition, the Photomath app includes a built-in calculator where you can type the question out instead of snapping a photo.

3. Chegg Study

Chegg Study is an app that provides many different homework and study tools on various subjects. If you have a basic question, you can either snap a photo, upload an image, or type it out. On the other hand, you can just scan the barcode of the textbook you're using with your mobile phone to find answers.

Another tool Chegg Study includes is over 500 million free flashcards on subjects like astronomy, business, chemistry, and psychology. Alternatively, you can use the app to create your own set of flashcards.

But the Chegg Study app also comes in handy if you need help with a specific course. All you have to do is add the course and the app provides everything you need to ace it, like expert Q&A and exam prep. Alternatively, there are a selection of Chegg alternatives you can try , too.

4. Course Hero

To get help with your homework, all you have to do is ask Course Hero. And asking is super simple. You can type in your question, snap a picture, or upload a document. If you're looking for assistance with math homework, there's even a dedicated Scan to Calculate option.

Using the Course Hero app, you can keep a library of all your homework documents and any other learning materials you need if you're completing a course.

What's more, Course Hero is available in your web browser if you need access to AI-powered homework assistance and a range of study resources while using your laptop or PC.

5. Bartleby

The Bartley app can solve your math homework problems in a single snap. Yet possibly the best part is the 24/7 homework help from actual tutors. Simply select the subject, type out the question, and add an optional image.

Once you've sent in your question, all you have to do is wait and pretty soon you'll get assistance from an expert with Masters or PhDs. However, there is another way to get homework help and that's by using the Search tab.

Type in what you're looking for, and you can filter through the solutions according to the solution type or subject. Alternatively, you can search for homework help based on the textbooks you're using.

Download: Bartleby for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

6. ScanSolve

Quick, uncomplicated, and to the point is what you can expect from this homework app. ScanSolve uses AI to answer your questions and covers subjects like math, English, and science.

As with many of the other apps on this list, using ScanSolve is as easy as taking a picture of the questions you are struggling with. From there, you can either read the explanation of the results or chat with the AI tutor if you're unsure of the answer you received.

Download: ScanSolve for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

7. Homework.ai

The Homework.ai app offers homework help using the power of artificial intelligence. Some of the subjects the app covers include art, biology, computer science, math, music, and a selection of languages like Spanish and German.

To get started, choose a subject, type out or audio record your question, and AI does the rest. For a quicker solution, you can simply scan the question using your mobile phone. Keep in mind that everything in the app is generated by AI, so you might need to double-check the answers if you're not 100% sure.

Along with answering your basic homework questions, Homework.ai can help you with language translation, rewriting text, and summarizing text.

Download: Homework.ai for iOS | Android (Free, subscription available)

8. Zookal Study

If you need homework help immediately, but you'd prefer to get it from an actual experienced tutor instead of AI, then Zookal Study is the app for you.

The best bit is that you won't have to wait hours for solutions to your questions—Zookal promises to deliver in as little as 20 minutes. Zookal keeps track of all your questions and answers, and you have access to a library of online solutions on the Zookal website.

The app centers on one main tool, Ask a Question, which is where you can type out or snap a picture of your homework question. Additionally, Zookal is a study app you can use in any browser with an impressive selection of online tools ranging from test prep and textbooks to flashcards and videos.

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

body-five-star-best-number-one

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

6 Homework Apps to Help Keep You Organized

homework apps

Managing everything you have to do as a student can seem like a full-time job. With so many classes, activities, club meetings, and homework assignments thrown at you every day, it can be very overwhelming to keep track of it all.

Luckily, there are some great homework apps you can install on your phone or tablet that can help you know what classes you have coming up each day and stay on top of all of your assignments.

Here are six of our favorites. We hope these help you stay organized all year long!

Although the myHomework app supports traditional school schedules as well as block schedules, it does not support alternating block schedules, so if you have an A/B schedule, this is probably not the app for you.

  • My Study Life This app is a full-fledged homework management app with its own web application, which is awesome because you can check your assignments from your computer or your phone. Plus, the calendar view shows all of your classes and assignments at the same time, and it shows you incomplete tasks that are due soon so you know what to work on first. The design is unique, too, with circles showing what percentage of a task is completed and how much more you have to go. Available for: iPhone, Android, Windows 8, Windows Phone and the web. Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Cost: Free

Another cool feature is that you can organize all of your assignments by date, course or priority, and you can sort them by pending and completed as well. Other bonus features include the ability to add contact info for all of your teachers and the ability to enter your grades so you can track how your GPA is doing.

Unfortunately, none of the apps listed above will actually do your homework for you — that part’s still up to you — but at least they’ll make it more likely that you’ll get it finished on-time and stress-free.

The organization was established over 50 years ago and works “to change the trajectory of high-potential Black youth by providing unique programming in the classroom and beyond.” Their scholars complete a four-year fellowship that includes academic enrichment, leadership development, career exposure, mentoring and college access.

Students must maintain a grade point average near 3.0 to remain in good standing with the organization — a bar the organization sets knowing full well that access to scholarships and grants for college will be the only way that most of its students can afford to go. Not all students meet this threshold despite mentoring from caring adults and strong support from administrative staff. Thus additional academic supports are needed.

Over many years, EE provided programs to help get students back on track if they started to flounder and to establish academic habits that put them on a trajectory for success. We started by offering weekly group tutoring events at the organization’s facility that not only helped students with homework completion and exam prep but also provided lessons on learning strategies, goal setting, and self-advocacy. However, traveling to the facility after school was a burden for some scholars, so EE tutors also met students at libraries and other public locations to provide support in specific subject areas where students requested help. Year after year we met with administrators and added additional resources: a summer school study skills workshop for freshmen and final exam prep workshops for all grade levels. Our unique array of programs allowed the organization to support their scholars at every stage of their academic journey.

The mission of the organization is to fight for economic mobility among highly motivated, first-generation college students by providing mentoring and intensive career development. The agency was founded on the belief that socioeconomic status should not be a barrier to college persistence and career success.

Their staff found that many of their participants were struggling with writing assignments of all sorts in college. From essays in English class to writing cover letters for potential summer internships, many students were not effective writers. The organization provided various career development workshops throughout the academic year, but they lacked a writer’s workshop to specifically address this area of weakness.

We met with program managers and the executive director to discuss their students’ needs and what type of program would be beneficial. The Writer’s Practice Workshop was an ideal fit for them. The course allowed students to understand that everyone is a writer even if they don’t think of themselves as such. Over the course of four sessions students assessed their own writing process; discussed the tools of a good writer’s practice; considered the audience, purpose, and the needs of any piece; and produced writing on topics that were important to them. Students left the workshop with a greater understanding of how to start assignments and follow steps to revise, edit, and polish for best results, giving them confidence in their writing.

The organization’s mission is to provide opportunities for underserved youth to achieve academic and personal success via financial, educational and personal support during their high school years. They provide tuition assistance to attend a high-quality school along with the guidance and commitment of caring, adult mentors. They aim to serve an often overlooked segment: academically “average” students from the city’s most challenging and underserved neighborhoods.

Program staff wanted to help their students prepare for final exams and train mentors to more effectively support students in their exam prep efforts. Volunteer mentors were available to give support, but the organization lacked a consistent approach on how best to help students and make them better learners.

EE met with program administrators and board members to plan and implement a Final Exams Workshop in the lead-up to final exams. The 3-hour workshop was attended by students and their mentors on a Saturday morning. The curriculum helped students create DIY study guides for any class, plan a study schedule, prioritize final exams by difficulty and need, assess and discuss their strengths and weaknesses in regards to learning strategies, and share with peers their successes or concerns. We also facilitated a conversation between mentors and mentees as to how they could best support their students in the coming weeks. Students and mentors left the workshop with a blueprint for attacking finals week in the most efficient way — a plan they could use for high school and college.

The organization supported immigrants and their families by connecting women from over 60 countries who share a dedication to the pursuit of global understanding and universal human rights. As part of their philanthropic arm, the organization supported a local elementary school they had identified as highly diverse with a large number of immigrant students. Before engaging EE, the organization relied mostly on volunteers to provide reading support to students during school hours.

After discussions with the organization and the school principal, teachers, families, and other stakeholders, we developed a school year calendar of after school programs that would help students develop the skills needed to succeed in elementary school and beyond. We provided courses for grades 5-8 in the spring and fall, greatly expanding the enrichment opportunities the NFP was able to provide. In doing so, we developed a close relationship with the school administration and their teaching staff, who saw the positive impact the program was having on their students. Additionally, the NFP was able to expand their mission to areas where they saw a great need: improving study skills, raising test scores, and increasing access to high school opportunities for immigrant youth.

A scholarship foundation funded by a suburban country club was disappointed with the caliber of student who typically applied for their college scholarship offerings. Knowing that the skills needed for success in college must be cultivated from an early age, they wanted to establish a summer enrichment program for students entering 9th and 10th grade that would serve as an early intervention and better position the pool of applicants when the time came a few years later to apply for the college scholarships.

We collaborated with the foundation to identify areas of strength and weakness in their applicant pool and listened to their personal beliefs about what it takes to succeed in college. With that understanding, we customized a version of the Summer Learners’ Workshop that lays the foundation for college-level skills and caters to the learning styles and academic backgrounds of the particular students at this organization.

The resulting program has gained a reputation as one of the top summer enrichment experiences in that community with parents routinely reporting that the results exceeded their expectations. The program is now attended by an even wider array of students than those who were first targeted by the foundation.

A charter school network was seeking to implement a test prep program across eight campuses to prepare their 8th grade students for the Chicago Public Schools selective enrollment entrance exam. The high school admissions process is highly competitive, and it was the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic when students were learning from home. The schools did not have expert knowledge about the contents of the test, and finding staff at their schools to cover a program outside of school hours would be challenging. Administrators knew how competitive the admissions process was and that even their strongest students were not guaranteed a spot. For equity, they wanted to offer the course to all of their students – even those who were very unlikely to be admitted to a selective enrollment school.

Given the wide array of students, the EE team worked with individual school counselors to create ability groupings, determine a process for reporting attendance, progress, and behavior issues, and create a curriculum that would be effective in a remote learning model. We knew that remote engagement for an after school program would be a challenge, so we incorporated competitive team games, a leaderboard of accomplishments, and other incentives to encourage maximum participation. EE provided all management and instructional staffing to deliver the test prep course successfully while freeing up teachers and counselors at the charter school to focus on their daily workload. Students received a robust course focused on strategies, practice tests, and concept review that put them in the best position to maximize their potential on test day.

A leading scholarship fund that provides financial assistance for highly qualified, low-income students knew that financial aid alone would be insufficient to ensure their students’ success at rigorous private and parochial high schools. Therefore, they sought an intensive summer program to prepare scholars for what lay ahead.

EE worked with the organization to determine the biggest challenges scholars would face. We landed on a wide array of non-cognitive skills that are not necessarily taught in middle school: time management, organization, self-advocacy, focus, growth mindset, etc. Inspired by this challenge, we developed our Ideal Student Workshop, which would later become the basis for our Learners’ Workshop.

Over a decade later we are still delivering the program to students at this scholarship fund and others. The program works to develop the three dimensions of successful students: character, learning strategies and habits. We update the program yearly to keep up with changes in student needs and the educational landscape. Our fun and research-based curriculum continues to be a popular summer bridge for various organizations.

A prominent sports-based youth development organization wanted to improve one of the core elements of their program: providing educational enrichment programs to their participants.

Their goal was to offer a continuum of services for 9th-12th graders that would support students in their schoolwork, provide a pathway to college, and create a culture of learning amongst players. EE was uniquely positioned to offer a variety of services to meet this need: private tutoring, study skills classes, writing courses, high school admissions test prep, SAT/ACT prep, and college readiness seminars. We listened to the players, parents, and other stakeholders to determine which programs were most effective, established expectations for participants, and decided on the best timing and format to deliver the courses.

Since 2017 we have successfully delivered these services allowing their administrative team to focus on their primary coaching responsibilities. Ultimately, the best praise we have received is that we have provided a wide circle of caring adults to support students academically and emotionally and that we have listened to their needs and adapted our offerings to suit their participants.

You can probably guess what this app is about purely from the name. It’s a simple app that acts as your to-do list!

The simplicity of it gives it its charm. You may argue you could just use your Notes app to write your to-do list, but the tick box next to each task on Todoist makes things all that more satisfying.

Break each task down into subtasks, add due dates, assign peers to tasks and much more. Much like Chipper, you can also set timers for each task too, which is great for keeping you on track with assignments.

Download Todoist on iOS or Android .

Focus To-Do: Pomodoro & Tasks

Tons of studies show how the Pomodoro technique is fantastic for productivity. If you’ve never heard of it before, the Pomodoro technique is named after the classic tomato timer you have in your kitchen.

It works by setting a timer to 25 minutes and focusing on a single task. When the timer ends, you take a 5 minute break. After four “Pomodoros†(25-minute work-intervals), you take longer breaks in 5 minute increments.

This app is literally based on science, so who can argue with that? Manage your to-do list, time your tasks, set reminders, track what you work on the most and much more!

Why the Pomodoro technique works

It helps those who get distracted easily and lose track of time

Keeps goals and task completion realistic – i.e, stops you biting off more than you can chew

It’s especially useful for those who enjoy gamified task completion

Focus To-Do: Pomodoro & Tasks is available for free on iOS or Android .

Taskheat — Visual To-Do List

Taskheat — Visual To-Do List, wasn’t specifically designed for students. But in terms of how visual it is, it would work fantastic for those who need to organise their tasks in an interesting way.

The app makes use of flow charts and colours to keep things looking neat and organised. It also lets you see which tasks are connected to each other for easy organisation. If you’re bound to forget about deadlines, its handy notification feature will make sure you stay on track too.

Use Apple products? All of your data automatically syncs with iCloud, meaning you can access Taskheat on any Apple device you own.

Everyday – Track Habits & Goals

Yet another app that wasn’t specifically designed for students. Everyday isn’t a planner as such, but more of a habit and goal tracker.

Why would a habit tracker be useful for students? It helps form discipline and visualises your progress with colours you input on each day. Overtime, whether that’s over the week, month or year, you can see how habits and positive changes have been formed.

Simply add all the habits or goals you wish to track, and pop a colour in to indicate whether you worked towards it.

Get Everyday on iOS , Android and Google Chrome .

Think of Trello as a virtual pinboard without the extra weight and stationary. It’s a visual tool that allows you to create lists and cards (your tasks) underneath those lists.

It’s fantastic for team projects, making it a good student planner, but also works as a handy self-organiser for all sorts of things. It’s totally free to use and available on both Apple and Android devices too.

Assign cards to peers, add deadlines, add a cool background to keep you motivated and use coloured labels to categorise your cards. The beauty of Trello is that it’s completely customisable. Make organisational boards about pretty much everything!

How to create a good study plan

Downloading a study planner app, even if it’s the best study planner app out there, it’s kind of useless if you don’t use them in a way that’s productive and beneficial for your studies.

Here are some really simple yet super effective ways to create a study plan that works for you.

Be honest about your study habits (or lack thereof)

There’s no shame in not having had a study plan before. What better time than the present to get started!

If you’ve noticed you burn out easily, or things are going through one ear and out of the other, it might be time to switch up your learning style too.

Look at your current schedule

Do you actually have time to study during the week? Are there any gaps where you can fit in study time? See where you can make room and plan accordingly.

Plan how much study time each class or assignment needs

Some classes, homework, and assignments will take longer than others to complete. If you know you need the extra time, see where you can cut back on other commitments.

Develop a study schedule using one of our recommended study planner apps

We recommend giving them all a go! At the end of the day, one of them may work better for you than the other. So why not give them a download, have a play around and see which one you want to make a concrete schedule with?

Stick to your study plan

This is a given, but once you’ve found something that works for you, make it a point of sticking to it. Not only will this help propel your studies, but you’ll ultimately feel far less stressed out.

Plus, the benefit of study planner apps is most, if not all, have notifications enabled. Meaning you can set notifications for when you need to complete your tasks or study!

Which apps do you like the look of? If you’re on the lookout for new courses to study, check out our New Skills Academy student discounts and get a few of these apps to get your studies organised!

#1 School Assignment Organization App

I am currently a sophomore in college and have been using this app since my sophomore year in high school. I cannot even imagine how i would stay organized without it. It is so easy to see what assignments need to be turned in, and i can also see my schedule day by day. I also uplaod pictures of needed pages in my textbook so i do not have to bring it home with me. The schools i have not had teachers that use the app to post assignments and it has still been very benneficial to me. you can fully use the app for free, but i choose to pay the annual fee which is very affordable at around just $5 i beleive. You can also sync your classes and assignments to your icloud calendar so it is all visible on your iphone. everything syncronizes easily between my devices and can even be accessed online from a school computer. In college i have gone to complete paperless work, where i have all my textbooks and nots on my ipad, and when i need to turn in an assignment i just print it off after completing it on my ipad. This app really helps with that where i can easily track all assignments that i have due right on my ipad, along with my notes and textbooks. I tried multiple different homework tracking apps and this is by far the best on the market.

Most useful app on Mac and iPhone

Mid-semester this spring, I had to reorganize my classes before starting two condensed courses on March 23. I searched for an app that would act as a digital homework planner with a clean interface, reminders, satisfying check boxes to click after completing assignments. Every traditional planner I’ve ever bought has ended up in the recycle bin so I figured it might be time to take my academics into the 21st century with some sort of organizer app geared specifically toward school. I found exactly that. This little widget has made my life exponentially more manageable and productive. The free version can do pretty much everything I would need it to do in order to stay organized. When I found out that the paid subscription is $4.99 for a year, I bought it to unlock the additional features like uploading documents, personalize the theme, but most importantly to support the developers who designed this app that has added much more than $4.99 of value to my life. I recommend myHomework to all of my classmates and friends. Truly a great investment in my own personal acadmic success. Thank you everyone at Instin, LLC.! You are doing great things. Cheers, Erik

I Love It, But...

I really enjoy this app - I use it everyday as HS student to keep organized with my classes. It has great features (I love the calendar, how you can preview your month with the tasks you've already put in, etc...) and I also enjoy the themes. The thing I love the most is the way it syncs between my iPhone and my Mac, so I can have my calendar everywhere! I plan to use this in college when I graduate at the end of this year. My only complaints are that it sometimes goes through phases of crashing (which can be so frustrating when you're trying to punch a deadline in as soon as the teacher verbally announces it in the middle of a lecture!), and the fact that you don't have the option to separate your tasks by time. By this I mean, just like in the previous homework app I used, it doesn't separate tasks by week, two weeks, three weeks, month, etc. I just feel like it would be more organized and nicer looking this way. When I have 6 tasks for the upcoming week and 3 that are over a month away in one place, it makes me feel cluttered - constantly reminding myself that "Oh, that isn't due until-" is a slight nuisance. May just be me but I'd love the option to organize things better in that way!

Powerful storms kill 3 people as tornadoes, hailstorms sweep across Central US: Updates

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on severe weather and tornadoes for Wednesday, May 8. For the latest on severe weather, view  our updates file for Thursday, May 9 .

Powerful storms barreled through the Central and Eastern United States Wednesday and killed at least three people after multiple tornadoes caused widespread damage and more than a dozen injuries.

Torrential rain, hail, and tornadoes pummeled parts of Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas into the morning Thursday. More than 22 million people had been under a tornado watch Wednesday evening in portions of eight states: Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

The National Weather Service issued dozens of tornado warnings across the states, including in Tennessee where at least two tornadoes and two deaths were reported. The tornadoes are part of a multi-state outbreak that began May 6, that has spawned dozens of tornado reports.

The weather service also confirmed two tornadoes near Huntsville, Alabama , including one east of Huntsville in DeKalb County on Wednesday night, after issuing multiple tornado warnings and a tornado emergency.

"A very strong deadly tornado is moving east through DeKalb County," the weather service in Huntsville, Alabama, said on X, formerly Twitter. "If in the warning, TAKE SHELTER NOW!"

Further to the east, at 12:26 a.m. Thursday, the weather service office in Peachtree City, Georgia warned that a "large and extremely dangerous tornado" was over Hammondville, Alabama, north of Fort Payne.

At 2 a.m. Thursday, nearly 200,000 customers remained without electricity in Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee and the Carolinas, according to USA TODAY'S power outage tracker . In northern Georgia, more than 95% of the customers in Gilmer County were without electricity. About 84% of the customers in Reynolds County, Missouri, were without power after strong storms in the region.

The Storm Prediction Center also tracked possible tornadoes Wednesday in Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri and South Dakota.

In Tennessee, Claiborne County’s emergency management office told USA TODAY a 22-year-old man died after a tree fell on his vehicle while he was driving around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Another person died and four others were injured in Maury County, Tennessee, after a tornado touched down. Three people suffered non-life-threatening wounds and one is in serious condition, according to the Maury County Regional Hospital.

One person in North Carolina died in the storm Wednesday after a tree fell on a car, according to Gaston County officials. Another person was rescued and transported to the hospital. The county declared a state of emergency Wednesday evening after hazardous weather caused severe damage to several communities and left nearly 45% of customers without power.

Several supercell thunderstorms were sweeping across south-central Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, the weather service said at 7 p.m. Wednesday , and storms were expected to continue into the evening with large hail, damaging winds, and some tornadoes. Supercells are the least common type of thunderstorm and tend to produce hazardous weather.

Rare tornado emergency issued in Middle Tennessee

A rare tornado emergency was issued for several communities south of Nashville, Tennessee. After a storm moved through Columbia, about 46 miles southwest of Nashville, the National Weather Service confirmed that a "large and destructive tornado” had touched down in the area.

The Maury County Office of Emergency Management confirmed the tornado swept through eastern Columbia, killing one person and injuring four others. Authorities also reported seeing trees down, blocked roads, and scattered debris.

"We are currently assessing the damage caused by recent storms in our area. Emergency crews are on the ground, but we urge everyone to stay out of the areas hit and remain weather aware," Jeff Hardy, director of Maury County Office of Emergency Management, said in a news release Wednesday night.

Hardy warned that more storms were expected and roads would be closed as crews began assessing and cleaning up the damage. Maury County schools will also be closed Thursday for the safety of students and staff, Hardy said.

A tornado watch is in effect for parts of Middle Tennessee until 3 a.m. Thursday. Flooding from intense rainfall was reported in parts of Middle Tennessee, prompting some water rescues.

The Red River near Port Royal Tennessee rose more than 20 feet Wednesday and is expected to crest at moderate flood stage at 38 feet. At least four other local streams in the region rose 6 to 8 feet in a matter of hours, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several school districts in Tennessee either ended classes early or canceled all after-school activities, according to the Tennessean, part of the USA TODAY Network .

Michigan tornadoes wreak havoc

Workers inside a FedEx facility in Michigan managed to escape unharmed after it partially collapsed as tornadoes ripped through Kalamazoo County, less than 60 miles south of Grand Rapids. Nearby, a tornado hit a mobile home community, injuring up to 20 people who were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Around 176 properties were damaged, 17 of which were completely destroyed, said Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard Fuller in a video posted on Facebook.

"We found homes in the roadway, we found homes in neighbor's homes," said Fuller, urging residents to stay home as officials continue to search for people and survey the damage across the county.

In southern Ohio, officials were surveying damage after two suspected tornadoes destroyed homes, toppled trees and snapped utility poles. Storms flooded some local areas, and emergency response personnel conducted multiple rescues. Tornadoes were also reported in Arkansas, Indiana and West Virginia.

Tornadoes, hail, damaging wind forecast for parts of Central US

Nearly 20 million people from northeastern Texas to Missouri and Kentucky were at enhanced or moderate risk of severe storms on Wednesday, according to the Storm Predication Center. The powerful thunderstorms were expected to bring tornadoes, giant hail and damaging winds, with the highest risk throughout Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee, the prediction center said.

The cities facing potentially the worst impacts include Nashville, Memphis, St. Louis, Louisville and Little Rock, according to the weather service. A vast swath of the central and eastern U.S., from Texas to Georgia and up through New England was at slight risk of experiencing some of the poor weather.

As of 2 p.m., there were reports of overturned trees causing damage to some homes and other buildings in Tennessee, according to the weather service. In Grainger County, just outside Knoxville, officials reported many downed powerlines, and hail the size of tennis balls pelted Clarksville, Tennessee, as the Storm Prediction Center tracked hail storms across the Central U.S.

Damage from wind gusts were also reported in Kentucky and Missouri, where meteorologists picked up winds speeds of 67 mph.

Through the day and into the evening, meteorologists anticipate multiple rounds of severe thunderstorms to slam the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee valleys. Across Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, thunderstorms are forecast to develop by late afternoon. Along with the winds, rain and possible tornadoes, hail larger than 3 inches in diameter are a threat as the system shifts eastward through the evening.

Flood watches were in effect across Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri through Thursday, according to the weather service. Some local areas may get 2 to 5 inches of total rainfall.

'The early warnings saved lives'

In St. Joseph County, just south of Kalamazoo, a tornado destroyed seven structures, mostly homes, Branch County Emergency Manager Tim Miner told the Detroit Free Press , part of the USA TODAY Network. There were no reports of serious injuries or deaths from the storms, which some credited to early prompt weather advisories.

"The early warnings saved lives," said Ernie Ostuno, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Grand Rapids. "The warnings went out and people reacted to them."

More than 101,000 homes and business in North Carolina were without power Wednesday evening, according to a USA TODAY database . About 40,000 utility customers in Tennessee also reported outages.

The looming storm system spun up at least eight tornadoes in Michigan; others were reported in Arkansas, Ohio and West Virginia, according to the National Weather Service . Powerful storms pummeled the Plains region on Monday, spinning up multiple tornadoes that killed at least one person in Oklahoma, flattened homes in multiple states and caused widespread power outages.

Tornado warning safety tips

While there's no such thing as guaranteed safety, the weather service says there are things people can do to  increase their chances of surviving  a deadly tornado:

∎ Protect yourself from flying or falling debris, the single biggest life-threatening hazard.

∎ Seek shelter in the closest, safest interior or underground room.

∎ Always avoid windows. Don’t go to the windows or doors to look outside.

∎ Cover yourself with thick protective coverings, such as a mattress, sleeping bags and thick blankets or other protective coverings.

∎ Wear a helmet, if you have one, to protect your head from debris.

The 13 Best Apps to Track Your Employees

author image

Table of Contents

Knowing exactly when your employees work and what they’re working on can be challenging for business owners juggling multiple team members. That’s why many turn to employee tracking apps. Employees use these apps to clock in and out of work and indicate their current projects. Some allow your team to tag their work hours by client, while others include location-based tracking.

With so many employee tracking apps and time and attendance systems available, it’s crucial to understand what you want to track and why when choosing a solution for your business.

Editor’s note: Looking for the right time and attendance system for your business? Fill out the below questionnaire to have our vendor partners contact you about your needs.

How to track your employees

You’ll likely work with three types of employee tracking apps:

  • Time and attendance tracking systems: The best time and attendance systems do more than just record when employees clock in and out. They can also time employee tasks and tag activities with relevant information, including the corresponding project or client, for billing purposes. Additionally, these apps often include shift-planning tools, invoicing features and numerous third-party integrations.
  • Geotracking apps: With geotracking apps, you can determine where your employees are stationed for work without personally traveling to their worksites. This tool is critical because supervisors who travel between worksites to check on their employees may lose up to 11 hours per week doing so.
  • Employee monitoring apps: Employee monitoring apps help managers keep tabs on various employee activities, including online activities and the devices they plug into company hardware.

Why tracking your employees is important

Tracking employees can be beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Ensure employees are working when they should be. Employee tracking apps and time and attendance solutions provide detailed insights into when your employees start and end their shifts daily. Your staff becomes more accountable for their work, and you don’t have to pay employees for time they aren’t working.
  • Understand what employees are working on. Many employee tracking apps tell you exactly what your employees are working on. This function is especially important if you bill clients hourly. With automated timesheets that show the number of hours spent on a project you’re billing per hour, you’ll know what to charge your clients and can back up your prices.
  • Maintain control over remote employees. Tracking can be crucial when managing a remote workforce . Many employee tracking apps include geotechnology that shows where employees are located, so you can ensure remote team members are where they need to be. Additionally, you can determine how well your employees use their travel time for business – specifically, how much time they might be losing that could be spent working.
  • Pinpoint patterns to improve efficiency. When tracking employees’ locations or activities (or both) during work time, you can use the data to observe patterns in your team’s work. For example, you can determine how long a specific task takes and budget appropriately. If an employee takes much longer than this amount of time, work with them to determine where the process can be sped up or if something is hindering them.

Track your employees, but trust them too

It’s fair to worry that your employees might be slacking off during work hours or otherwise misusing your company’s time and money. In reality, though, many HR and management experts advise trusting your employees and giving them independence instead of dictating their every move.

Yes, tracking your employees has value when it comes to payroll processing and labor costing. But if you use employee monitoring software, ensure it comes second to leading with respect for – and confidence in – your team. After all, employees who feel trusted and safe at work are usually more open to being monitored.

2024 tornado tally more than 100 higher than historical average

By Brian Lada , AccuWeather meteorologist and staff writer

Published May 9, 2024 8:19 AM PDT | Updated May 9, 2024 11:31 AM PDT

Authorities urged residents in areas of Indiana and Michigan to take shelter as severe storms caused tornados to touch down on May 7.

Spring is the peak of severe weather season across the United States, but 2024 has been incredibly active, particularly over the past few weeks, which has sent the annual tornado count toward record territory.

As of Thursday morning, there have been 670 preliminary tornado reports across the United States, well above the historical average of 559 through May 8, according to the Storm Prediction Center. There have been 129 preliminary reports so far in May, following 378 twisters in April.

The only years when there were more tornadoes through May 8 were 2007, 2008, 2011 and 2017.

Tornado Alley has roared back to life, a major shift from recent years when twisters favored the Gulf Coast states and Tennessee Valley. The majority of tornadoes in 2024 have touched down in Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Ohio has also experienced a surge in tornadoes, with 54 reports so far.

The annual tornado count was running near to slightly below the historical average through mid-April, but a shift in the weather pattern opened the door for tornado-producing thunderstorms to develop more frequently across the central United States.

AccuWeather warned of this flip in the pattern in January with the release of its annual U.S. spring forecast.

File with TaxAct

Best for a hands-on approach, google sheets.

Why it stands out: Perhaps you don't want to link all of your bank accounts or credit cards, and you don't mind taking a more active approach to money management. Then, you might consider using Google Sheets for a straightforward way of analyzing your spending and savings goals .

Even those who aren't as tech-savvy will find that Google Sheets has a simple, no-fuss setup process. All you need to do is set up a Google account and open the Google Spreadsheets tab. Then, you can select a general template for budgets or investment tracking and follow the steps listed on the spreadsheet.

Keep in mind that you'll have to update your spreadsheet regularly to have an effective spreadsheet.

What to look out for: Creating and maintaining your budget fully depends on whether you're willing to manually input all your data. Some may like having a closer, more hands-on approach to tallying expenses or tracking changes. But if you're worried that it might become too overwhelming to make updates every month, consider one of our other options.

Other Personal Finance Software We Considered That Didn't Make the Cut and Why

  • Tiller: Tiller might be worthwhile if you prefer tracking money in a spreadsheet, but don't want to update it manually. It links your bank accounts and credit cards to Google Sheets or Microsoft sheets so your transaction and balance information automatically update. It wasn't a top pick because Tiller only has a 30-day free trial, then costs $79 per year.
  • YNAB App : You may use YNAB App through the web or on an app. While it could be a good choice if you struggle with your spending in specific categories, Quicken Deluxe have more robust features. It also has a 34-day free trial, then you'll have to pay $14.99 per month or $99 annually.
  • Monarch Money : Monarch Money is a personal finance app and online platform. The plan costs $14.99 per month or $99.99 per year and allows you to track investment accounts or use customizable budget categories.
  • GNU Cash : This is a free accounting software for personal and small business finances. You may download the program for Windows and Mac devices. With GNU Cash, you manage your finances through a traditional checkbook system. It could be worth considering if you have a business, but for those who don't, it likely won't be an easy-to-use interface.
  • Quicken Simplifi : Simplifi by Quicken is a cloud-based software program, which means you'll need to have an internet connection to use its services. In comparison, other Quicken programs can be downloaded onto your computer. Simplifi by Quicken also isn't as robust as Quicken's desktop programs.
  • Quicken Starter: Quicken Starter could be worthwhile if you want a basic overview of your finances. But if you want to be able to create a 12-month budget or keep track of investment accounts, Quicken Deluxe will be a more compelling option.
  • Rocket Money : Rocket Money has an app and online platform. Its premium plan has concierge services to review bills, premium customer support, unlimited budgets, and customizable budget categories.
  • TaxSlayer : TaxSlayer was featured as the best budget pick in our best tax software guide. However, to qualify for the Simply Free Plan, you must have taxable income under $100,000, and you won't be able to claim dependents. TaxAct's free plan allows you to claim dependents. It also offers expert help with all filing packages.
  • H&R Block Tax Software : H&R Block is also featured in our best tax software guide. If you want to choose a more affordable option, you may prefer TaxAct, though.
  • TurboTax : TurboTax is featured in our best tax software guide and might be worth considering if you have a complex tax situation. However, TurboTax Premium plan cost more than TaxAct options.

Methodology: How did we choose the best personal finance software?

Research is an important part of choosing a personal finance software program that fits your needs. First, we compiled a list of 13 personal finance software programs. Then, we compared each program by analyzing the following criteria: platform accessibility, pricing, money management features, and user experience. With tax software programs, we only considered the DIY online filing options. We did not consider full-service packages where an expert helps with taxes.

The best personal finance software for you depends on your financial goals and habits. Someone new to money management will likely want different features than someone who is seasoned in making budgets or prefers filing their taxes. To help you figure out which personal finance software program could be a good option for you, we highlighted the benefits and limitations of each product.

There are free personal finance tools that you may use online. For example, Empower, GNU Cash, and Google Spreadsheets are free. Rocket Money also has free option.

What personal finance software is easiest for you will largely depend on your needs and level of comfort with technology and finance. Google Sheets is by far the easiest to set up, but it won't help you with the finance side of things. Conversely, something like Quicken Deluxe might not be as easy to set up, but it is far more helpful for your finance needs.

NFL schedule release 2024 tracker: Leaks, rumors, live updates, what we know for games

best apps for homework tracking

There are a lot of questions about the 2024 NFL schedule. The first one being: When will it be released?

Here's a look at what we know about the NFL schedule for 2024, including leaks, reports, rumors, speculation, educated guesses and more about the games and the release of the 2024 schedule.

Keep coming back for updates to the schedule for the 2024 NFL season.

The complete 2023 NFL schedule was released on May 11 last year, with select game information released earlier (Black Friday and Christmas Day games), meaning we could start getting more leaks and updates to the 2024 NFL schedule at any time.

NFL schedule 2024 release delay surprises teams

The Sports Business Journal reported that NFL teams were expecting the NFL schedule to be released on Thursday, May 9 before teams were notified the release would come on Wednesday, May 15.

Ben Fischer wrote: "The memo from NFL EVP/Media Distribution Hans Schroeder did not give a reason for the delay. The schedule release had not been officially announced yet, and the league always maintains a degree of flexibility considering the complex nature of developing the schedule. But some teams had been told informally it was coming Thursday. Schroeder wrote that more details about activations or other nuances of the plan were expected in the coming days. The league and media rights holders sometimes announce specific high-profile matchups before the full slate is unveiled. The schedule release has become a key priority for teams and the league in recent years, with teams preparing increasingly sophisticated schedule social content and using it as a starting point for single-game ticket sales."

NFL schedule predictions: Mock 2024 schedule

NFL Network's Peter Schrager presented some NFL 2024 schedule predictions in his mock 2024 NFL schedule, which included several NFL Week 1 matchup picks, his Thanksgiving and Christmas Day predictions and the teams with the most primetime games and the fewest primetime games.

You can see his selections in this post, with the Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions projected to get the most primetime games and the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals projected to get the fewest.

5 NFL teams with favorable schedules in 2024

CBS Sports took a look at some NFL teams that have potentially favorable schedules in 2-024 based on the win percentage of their opponents last season and singled out the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles.

Jeff Kerr wrote: "The strength of schedule is already known for each team. While the metric is flawed, it's fun to speculate which teams will be good based on the strength of schedule (also plays into the offseason signings and draft picks). As the league awaits the 2024 schedule, here's a prediction of five teams that will be good in 2024 based on their strength of schedule. Three of these teams were playoff teams last season."

How to watch the 2024 NFL schedule release

The complete NFL schedule for 2024 will reportedly be released on Wednesday, May 15 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).

We are bound to get some leaks and updates before then, but that is when the entire schedule for every team is set to be announced.

NFL Network will have a schedule announcement show at 5 p.m. Pacific that day and NFL teams will being releasing their complete 2024 NFL schedule around that time.

ESPN will also have coverage of the release, which has become a spectacle for NFL fans over the years, as they eagerly anticipate the slate of games for their team.

Fans will just have to eagerly anticipate the 2024 NFL schedule release for another week.

2024 NFL schedule opponents for every team

We don't know when NFL teams play each other in the 2024 NFL season, but we do know who they will play.

The NFL released the list of every team's opponents for the upcoming season in January, revealing the home and away foes.

For example, the Kansas City Chiefs will host the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Houston Texans in 2024.

They will play at the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers.

Under-the-radar NFL games to watch in 2024 season

We've already looked at some of the most-anticipated games on the 2024 NFL schedule, but what about some under-the-radar matchups to watch?

Athlon Sports listed five games it thought fell into this category in the upcoming season.

The five games? Miami Dolphins at Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts, Pittsburgh Steelers at Atlanta Falcons, Washington Commanders at Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks at New England Patriots.

We now just have to have the NFL 2024 schedule released to find out when we can watch them.

NFL win totals odds 2024: Over/under wins for every NFL team in regular season

NFL win totals released before 2024 NFL schedule

We may not know the NFL schedule for teams in the 2024 season, but we do know the opponents each team will face.

And that's evidently enough to determine over/under win total odds for each NFL team in the upcoming season, according to one sportsbook.

FanDuel Sportsbook lists the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs with the highest over/under win totals for the upcoming season, at 11.5 wins. The New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos are each at 5.5 wins, the lowest in the league.

You can see each NFL team's regular season win total odds for the 2024 NFL season here .

NFL grudge games on tap with 2024 NFL schedule

We don't know when NFL "grudge" games will be played in 2024, but there will be some very interesting ones on the 2024 NFL schedule.

USA TODAY Sports broke down 15 games that could attract a lot of attention in the upcoming season because of players or coaches facing former teams.

The Los Angeles Chargers vs. Baltimore Ravens' Harbaugh Bowl will definitely attract a lot of eyeballs, as will the Kansas City Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers rematch.

One potentially underrated one that caught our attention on the list? The Washington Commanders at the Arizona Cardinals, which will mark former Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury's return to Arizona (and one-time Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels' return to the state).

NFL games to circle on 2024 NFL schedule

SB Nation broke down seven games to circle on the 2024 NFL schedule, starting with the Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills.

But that isn't the only game to see mark on the calendar, when the schedule is released.

The site also singles out the Baltimore Ravens vs. Los Angeles Chargers game, Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Denver Broncos game, Carolina Panthers vs. Chicago Bears game, Atlanta Falcons vs. Minnesota Vikings game and Chiefs vs. San Francisco 49ers game.

It's last suggested game to circle isn't exactly a game, it's the "New York Jets vs ... whoever."

NFL schedule 2024 predictions: Who will play on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day?

While we await the release of the 2024 NFL schedule (or leaks of it), some sites have started making predictions for the big dates on the 2024 NFL calendar.

Pro Football Network predicts that the Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions, Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins and New York Jets will be the Thanksgiving Day matchups. It has the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons and Minnesota Vikings as its two Christmas Day game predictions.

NFL power rankings: Arizona Cardinals on the rise after 2024 NFL Draft

Full NFL schedule release set for May 15, according to report

Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal posted on X: "NEWS: The full NFL schedule is currently slated to be released at 8pm ET on May 15, per memo to teams this afternoon from exec Hans Schroeder. Teams had been expecting this week, Thursday. Reason for delay not mentioned in memo."

Which NFL teams deserve more primetime games in 2024?

Interestingly,  SB Nation  recently published a story about three NFL teams who deserve more primetime games on the 2024 NFL schedule and the Arizona Cardinals were included among the three.

Joseph Acosta wrote: "Fighting for some shine in a loaded NFC West, the Cardinals spent the first quarter of 2023 looking like one of the worst teams of the NFL. However, after QB Kyler Murray returned, the Cardinals began to look like one of the more intriguing teams for the future. Again, it’s the offense that takes most of the shine here. Murray, TE Trey McBride, and rookie WR Marvin Harrison Jr. give fans something to look for when the Cardinals play. Murray plays really exciting football, and if Harrison Jr. can be the outside receiver we all think he can be, then the Cardinals should be extremely exciting. Defensively, the team is still slowly coming along, but safety Budda Baker is still a very fun player to watch. With Murray running around throwing passes to Harrison Jr., this will be one of the most fun teams to watch this year."

The Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts were the other two teams that deserved more primetime games, according to the story.

NFL 2024 schedule: Questions swirling around timeline for release

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio and Chris Simms took a look at what could be impacting the release of the 2024 NFL schedule in a video.

Which NFL teams will have toughest schedules in 2024?

We don't know when teams will play their opponents in the 2024 NFL season, but we do know who they will play.

Which teams will have the most difficult schedules in 2024, based on last season's records?

According to NFL Research , the Cleveland Browns will have the toughest 2024 NFL schedule. The Browns' opponents in the upcoming season had a .547 win percentage last season.

The Baltimore Ravens are next, with a .536 opponent win percentage from last season, while the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 opponents had a .533 win percentage last season.

The Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers round out the Top 5 most-difficult NFL schedules in 2024, with opponents of both of those teams having a .526 win percentage last season.

More: Arizona Cardinals, fans deserve NFL primetime game in 2024 NFL schedule

Which NFL teams will have easiest schedules in 2024?

The 2024 NFL schedule for some teams will be easier than others, based on win percentages from last season.

The Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints' opponents both had a .453 win percentage last season, while opponents of the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears were .467.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers' opponents in 2024 had a .478 win percentage in 2023.

Could NFL go to an 18-game schedule?

Could the NFL move to an 18-game regular schedule soon?

The league will still have a 17-game regular season in 2024, but Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow addressed the potential of adding another regular season game in the future with reporters recently, bringing up the idea that players would need a second bye week with an additional regular season game.

"That's definitely something that we've thought about it; 18 games is definitely a big ask," Burrow told reporters . That's not easy adding that extra game. Obviously, it would be great for revenue, but I feel like adding that bye week if you're going to have the 18-game schedule is pretty critical for our bodies. If you keep that first bye week, and some teams have the bye in Week 5, Week 6, and then you're going 12, 13 games in a row that's not easy. Probably a Thursday night game thrown in in there, too, so that's never easy. Those two byes are pretty critical.”

NFL schedule release could be next week according to 'signs'

The NFL schedule could be released at any time. History says that it could come this week, based on previous schedules released, but Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio recently reported that it will probably come next week.

He wrote: "Will it be this week? As best we can tell, no, it won’t be. How about next week? That’s currently looking more likely. Especially since next week is a big week for the TV industry, with the “upfront” presentations in New York. Given that the league now authorizes each of the networks to announce a game or two in the days preceding the full release, it makes sense for the networks to generate maximum buzz by sharing a taste of the schedule on the day they unveil their full fall lineups. If not next week, the next week is the week preceding Memorial Day weekend. That’s not the week for getting the most possible attention for the coming schedule."

Kansas City Chiefs to host NFL kickoff game

The Kansas City Chiefs are set to host the first game of the 2024 NFL season, the NFL kickoff game, on Thursday, Sept. 5.

We just don't know who the two-time defending Super Bowl champions will play in that game.

USA TODAY Sports' Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz ranked eight candidates to face the Chiefs in that game, from worst to best.

He ranked the Baltimore Ravens as the best possible matchup in the game, which will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.

NFL schedule's best grudge games: Who has something to settle in 2024?

Philadelphia Eagles to face Green Bay Packers in NFL Week 1

The Philadelphia Eagles will host the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024, at Corinthians Arena, home to Brazilian soccer team SC Corinthians.

The Eagles-Packers game will be the first NFL regular season game in Brazil.

Peacock (NBCUniversal) will exclusively stream the Week 1 game in São Paulo, Brazil. The game will also be available on free, over-the-air broadcast television in the local markets of the competing teams as well as on mobile devices with NFL+.

Designated home teams announced for NFL International Games in 2024

The Eagles are the host team for the game in Brazil in NFL Week 1, but that isn't the NFL's only international game this season.

Four other regular season games will be played as part of the 2024 NFL International Games and while we don't know the dates or complete matchups for those games, we do know the home teams for the European slate of international contests.

The Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings will all host games in London, while the Carolina Panthers will host a game in Munich, Germany.

NFL schedule release 2024: When is it? What to know ahead of full release this month

There could be two NFL games on Christmas Day in 2024

Ready for some Wednesday NFL football?

Dec. 25, 2024, is on a Wednesday and the NFL is reportedly set to have two games that day, according to CBS Sports .

The ratings are just too good for the league to not have games that day, evidently. CBS Sports reported that the games will be put up for bid between the league's broadcast partners.

New NFL rule could impact short-week games in 2024

NFL owners approved a rule in March allowing teams to play two games on short rest during the season , meaning a team could potentially play on Sunday and then Thursday Night Football, twice, in an attempt to have better games that night.

So, that could mean we see the better teams in primetime more often this season, and it could mean less rest for some of those teams. The NFL previously only allowed teams to play on a short week once per season.

Who will face Chiefs in season opener? Ranking eight candidates from worst to best

Jacksonville Jaguars could play two games in London in 2024

Jacksonville.com wrote: "It’s not exactly a highly-guarded secret among league insiders, but when the NFL schedule is released sometime in May, the Jaguars are expected to return for another London doubleheader in 2024, according to a league source."

According to the report, the team would host one game and be the visiting team against the Bears in the other.

Jim Irsay says 2024 NFL schedule coming out 'soon'

No one seems to be quite sure when the 2024 NFL schedule is coming out, but Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay might have left a clue when he posted a message on social media Tuesday.

"I smell a 2024 SCHEDULE coming out soon," he posted on X.

Does "soon" mean this week? Does it mean next? It looks like we'll just have to wait to find out.

Track & field: Southern's Cole Cramer matches Shore Conference record at Ocean County meet

best apps for homework tracking

JACKSON – Informed that he made history by matching the Shore Conference record in the 100-meter dash, Southern Regional High School track & field star Cole Cramer deadpanned his response.

“Hopefully it will be gone soon,” he said.

That’s probably a safe bet. The junior clocked 10.39 in the trials during day one of the Bill Bruno Ocean County Championships Wednesday, matching the league standard set by Long Branch great Miles Shuler-Foster in 2010.

“That’s great, but I’ve had my eyes on the state record since freshman year,” Cramer said.

That mark is 10.33, set by Franklin’s Mario Heslop in 2019.

Cramer raced the dash again Wednesday in the final, clocking 10.42. Toms River North’s Madiajoudou Diawara took second in 10.80.

“I felt good coming out of the blocks,” Cramer said of his record run. “I had some people on my left to help push me forward. That’s the first time I had someone to push up with me all season. It felt good to get moving.”

It felt extra good because last spring at this meet, Cramer suffered a hamstring injury that ultimately sidelined him for the rest of the season. This was a full-circle moment.

“I said that as soon as I got my medal – it was my favorite because of how much work it took to get back,” he said. “I’m happy to be here.”

Cramer will race the 200 meters when the meet concludes Friday at Jackson Liberty. He already owns the Shore Conference record in that event, a blazing 21.18.
