Shapes Activities for Preschoolers
One of the first math concepts that preschoolers learn is identifying shapes . They begin to distinguish among the different shapes and categorize items according to shape. They learn the names of shapes and their characteristics. They find shapes in everyday items. This collection of shape activities for preschoolers can lead preschoolers to explore shapes in all kinds of ways.

I cant find these on your members site.
Hi Stacy, These are free so you can just download them right from Pre-K Pages. With more than 300 free printables at Pre-K Pages I didn’t want to clutter the membership vault with them.

Lesson Plan
Know your shapes, view aligned standards.
In this lesson, young learners will be introduced to defining and non-defining attributes (e.g., a circle is round and a closed shape) of common shapes such as circles, triangles, and rectangles. Ideal for first graders, children will learn the differences between two-dimensional shapes and identify them and their attributes. Kids will be tasked with a shape hunt to find circular, triangular, and rectangular shapes in either their home or classroom. They will then draw them. This lesson provides young mathematicians with a great introduction to geometry!
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to identify defining attributes of basic shapes. Students will be able to identify the number of sides that a triangle, rectangle, square, and circle have.
Introduction
- Ask your students if they know what defining attribute means.
- Explain that it means a characteristic that specifically describes something. For example, a ball is round, so round is its defining attribute.
- Ask your students to define non-defining attribute now that they know what a defining attribute is.
- Explain that it is a characteristic that could be there one day but could be changed the next day. For example, the orange ball could be painted red, and then it would be a red ball.
- Show students real objects such as different types and sizes of balls, or photographs of real objects.
Intermediate
- Draw a shape such as a triangle on the board, and change the non-defining attibutes by coloring it different colors, drawing it bigger or smaller, and drawing it upside down or sideways.
- Tell students that although the triangle may look different, we know that it is a triangle because it is a flat, closed shapes with three staight sides and three corners.

Frequently asked questions about shapes
Learning about shapes and the properties of shapes would be a lot easier if it was all about memorization. However, there’s so much more to shapes than just their names. Explore our guides and games to grow your knowledge about important concepts like area, perimeter, and more.
Already have questions? Maybe we can answer a few! Here are the most commonly asked questions we get about shapes.
The four main shapes are circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles. Of course, there are shapes outside of these, including three-dimensional shapes like spheres, cones, and cubes, but these are considered the four main shapes.
You might think it’s one of the four main shapes, but the most common shape in nature is actually the hexagon. Beehives, insect eyes, snowflakes and more are all made up of hexagons, which fit together seamlessly.
The golden spiral is a geometric shape that resembles a snail shell and that perfectly captures the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci sequence is a sequence where each number in the sequence is equal to the sum of the two numbers preceding it, so: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, etc.
Perimeter is the measure of the outside of a shape, which you can get when you add together the lengths of each of its sides. The area is the inside of a shape. Each shape has its own area equation.
