Find Your Learning Style (Assignment Tips!)

Knowing your personal learning style furthers your academic success. In the same way that each student has different interests and abilities, our ways of receipt, processing, and storing information differ. Embracing your unique learning styles can make studying easier and more pleasant rather than frustrating and overwhelming.

Educational psychology defines learning styles in a few different ways, each describing different inclinations in processing information. For instance, some are visual learners and need to rely on diagrams and flowcharts, while some learners do best when material is provided by lectures and discussions – in other words, auditory learning. Other people learn kinesthetically, capable of learning by doing. The idea is that when you know what kind of learning works best for you, then you can organize your study habits and methods accordingly.

While adjusting your study methods to fit your learning style, you might still find yourself thinking, “I wish someone could just help assignment .” It’s a common feeling, especially when tackling subjects that are outside your comfort zone. Recognizing and adapting to your learning style can minimize these moments of frustration and make your study sessions much more productive!

Identifying Your Learning Style

The visual learner.

If you understand concepts better through the use of charts, graphs, and other forms of spatial understanding, then you are a visual learner. In this regard, color in notes can go a long way in helping such students, as can diagrams and, for that matter, even videos. When studying, try to create mind maps or set up information in an eye-catching yet organized format. Flashcards can be a great help, too.

The Auditory Learner

Auditory learners learn most efficiently when they hear the information. You may prefer this style if you find you remember information from lectures more easily, or you enjoy talking your way through a topic. You can use this to your advantage by recording lectures-ask first-and replaying them later; being actively involved in class discussions; or even teaching the information to a classmate. Additionally, you can enhance this by listening to podcasts or summarizing your notes with voice memos to retain information.

The Kinesthetic Learner

Kinesthetic learners learn best through direct interaction – hands-on experience. If you learn more effectively when you are able to do something yourself rather than simply reading or listening about a topic, then this may be your learning style.

Try incorporating model building, experimentation, or using interactive apps that demonstrate what would happen if one were to manipulate an object in a physical environment. Incorporating physical activity into study sessions can also be helpful, even if only pacing while going over flashcards.

The Reading/Writing Learner

Some learn best with words; their primary learning channels are reading and writing . If you find you learn most easily or effectively from reading your textbook or writing an essay, then re-write lecture notes, summarize chapters or write out questions you may be asked on an examination to reinforce your learning.

Utilizing Multiple Learning Styles

Combining techniques for complex subjects.

Some topics will require that more than one learning style be utilized. For instance, if you are learning a language you may listen to language CDs, making the learning auditory, use flashcards which would make it kinesthetic and also label items in your home which becomes visual. Utilizing multiple learning styles can be extremely beneficial to retention and comprehension.

Experimenting with New Study Techniques

Don’t be afraid to try various study techniques to find what works for you and in what subject. What works for a math assignment may not be quite so effective when it comes to a literature review. It all has to do with flexibility and learning how to adapt.

Integrating Technology in Learning

Use technology to supplement your learning style. There are online apps and tools to help you in your style of learning: interactive simulations, learning games , video lectures, and digital flash cards all exist and can make learning easier and more enjoyable.

Adapting Study Environments to Suit Learning Styles

The environment in which you study greatly affects how well you learn. Cluttered desks, ergonomic furniture, and noise levels are important points of consideration when modifying your study space to meet your needs. You might find it helpful to study in a clutter-free environment with plenty of visual reinforcements around you, such as charts and diagrams hanging on the walls.

Auditory learners would appreciate a quiet room where they can discuss something aloud or listen to recorded material with no interference. As for the kinesthetic learner, a study space could be flexible enough in that it allows one to easily move around, stand up, or use tools such as stress balls or fidget spinners while learning.

Leveraging Group Studies and Peer-to-Peer Learning

Group studies can be a great resource if you know how to use them to your best advantage in developing your learning style. Auditory learners find group study sessions an avenue for discussing and explaining concepts to others, hence reinforcing their own learning.

Visual learners will benefit from the sessions because they will get to see presentations and diagrams from other peers, while kinesthetic learners will get to build models or conduct role-playing that will help them retain information better.

Even reading/writing learners can find value in these sessions by summarizing the group’s findings in a clear, concise manner!

Time Management and Learning Styles

Good time management is a prime key towards achieving success academically, and this can be enhanced when you understand your learning style. You might find that if you are an auditory learner, you can study more effectively at those times of the day when there is minimal noise.

Or, kinesthetic learners might include physical activity in their study routine, such as pacing on a treadmill while listening to an audio recording of their class notes. Either way, the more closely your study routine is aligned with your natural tendencies, the easier it will be to stay focused and retain information.

Feedback Mechanisms and Learning Styles

Feedback is an essential part of the learning process, and the mode of delivery can be adjusted to suit how you learn best. For example, visual learners may appreciate graphical or color-coded feedback on your assignments, which would enable you to visually group similar corrections and commit them to memory.

Oral feedback sessions may be fruitful in the case of auditory learners where one can discuss the performances and clear doubts right then and there. As far as kinesthetic ones are concerned, they may like to see some practical demonstrations of the techniques one needs to implement or correction sessions in the form of hands-on practice.

Final Thoughts: Customize Your Learning Journey

Identifying and embracing your learning style is key to maximizing your academic potential. The way one understands his or her learning style can help him or her in modifying study habits to become more effective, less stressful, and more enjoyable.

Keep in mind, that it’s good to know your preferred learning style, but don’t be afraid to integrate others also, especially when approaching those trickier subjects that may ask for a more multidimensional approach. Remain curious, test other ways, and constantly improve your study techniques.

This personalized strategy will lead you not only to academic success but also will empower you to act as a lifelong learner!
