Why We Celebrate Youth Day on 16 June

Street sign in Soweto South Africa

First published: June 2018. Updated 01 June 2021.

On June 16 each year, South Africans celebrate Youth Day . Youth Day commemorates the Soweto Uprising , which took place on 16 June 1976, where thousands of students were ambushed by the apartheid regime.

On Youth Day, South Africans pay tribute to the lives of these students and recognises the role of the youth in the liberation of South Africa from the apartheid regime.

The Bantu Education Act and the Soweto Uprising

Let’s rewind a little further to January of 1954, when the Bantu Education Act came into effect, making it compulsory for black children to attend government schools and learn specific subjects in English and Afrikaans. Prior to this, most black children only had access to schools run by missions that were understaffed and poorly attended.

The Bantu Education system wasn’t much better. It featured separate Black schools and universities, poor facilities, overcrowded classrooms and inadequately trained teachers, resulting in a lack of quality education for black children. T he Bantu Education Policy was designed to ‘train’ Africans for their role in the new apartheid society. This African role was one of the worker, labourer and servant only.

In January of 1976, the government mandated that all school subjects be taught in Afrikaans. The Afrikaner -dominated government recognised only English and Afrikaans as official languages, and all indigenous languages were banned.

The decision caused an uproar amongst parents, teachers and students, so on the morning of June 16 1976, 16-year-old Antoinette Sithole and an estimated 20,000 students from Soweto and the surrounding secondary and high schools, planned to peacefully protest Afrikaans as the primary teaching language in schools.

If you want a well-rounded picture of what happened during the Soweto Uprising, why not take a half-day Soweto tour ?

The protest was planned by the Soweto Students Representative (SSRC), with support from the wider Black Consciousness Movement. Teachers and parents joined the march after the SSRC emphasised peaceful action. Little did they know this student protest would go on to become one of the most tragic, yet pivotal, protests in all of South Africa’s history.

The students began the march to Orlando Stadium, only to find out that police had barricaded the road along their intended route. The leader of the SSRC asked the crowd not to provoke the police, and the march continued on another route. The students sang and waved placards with slogans such as, “Down with Afrikaans” and “Viva Azania “.

The police responded to the protest by firing teargas and later live ammunition on demonstrating students. The police began to shoot at the protesters and in the confusion and chaos, Sithole’s 13-year-old brother, Hector Pieterson was fatally shot.

Photojournalist, the late Sam Nzima , was covering the protest for The World, a Johannesburg newspaper when he captured the iconic image of Pieterson’s lifeless body being carried through the streets with Sithole crying hysterically by his side. The photograph was published across the globe and Pieterson came to symbolise the uprising, giving the world a shocking glimpse into the sheer brutality of apartheid.

At least 176 Black students, many of them children, including Hector Pieterson, lost their lives on 16 June 1976.

The uprising resulted in a widespread revolt that spread across the country and carried on until the following year. The aftermath of June 16, 1976, had severe consequences for the Apartheid government. Pictures of the police firing on peacefully demonstrating students led to an international uproar against South Africa and its Apartheid system.

The students’ brave efforts resulted in international pressure and sanctions against the South African government to make changes to its educational policies.

When did Youth Day become a holiday?

In 1995 , the newly-elected democratic government declared that June 16 would be Youth Day – to serve as a reminder of the progress our country has made regarding equality and equal opportunity for all youth and to honor the youth who lost their lives during the Soweto Uprising. It is now a National Holiday in South Africa.

Soweto has come a long way since the uprising of 1976. The name Soweto is an abbreviation for South Western Townships . The township itself was built around the informal settlements of the first mine workers who came to the area during the gold rush of the late-1800s.

Cooling Towers of Soweto in Johannesburg

It has become popular with travellers from around the world who come to visit Vilakazi Street , which is one of the stops on the Johannesburg Political and Historical Tour . This famous street was home to two Nobel peace prize winners; Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the late former president Nelson Mandela.

Not far from here is the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum , which you can visit on the Soweto and Apartheid Museum Tour . It was established in the early 1990s and commemorates the role of the students who took part in the protest march of 1976 and the people who died in the aftermath, fighting for freedom, democracy and peace.

How is Youth Day celebrated in South Africa

Last year in June 2020, we celebrated Youth Day in South Africa against the backdrop of yet another uprising driven by young people. The Black Lives Matter Movement had a resurgence after the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, earlier in 2020 during the heat of the Coronavirus pandemic. The response to Floyd’s murder caused a significant amount of protests and uprisings all around the world, calling an end to discrimination, systemic racism and police brutality.

In South Africa, we can celebrate Youth Day by commemorating and honouring those who spoke out and took action against the oppressive Apartheid system. We also honour the lives lost in the face of brutalist political systems and all forms of oppression – then and now. Youth Day is used by schools, colleges, and university students in South Africa to hold discussions on educational issues.

Due to COVID-19, there are currently no big events that celebrate Youth Day,  but what we can do is educate ourselves and learn from the events that took place on June 16.

Apart from educating themselves, many South Africans also spend Youth Day helping underprivileged children in schools or orphanages across the country – either by donating their time or resources to aid in their education.

As visitors to South Africa, you can celebrate Youth Day by visiting Soweto and Vilakazi Street .

Visit Soweto and Vilakazi Street

Due to its rich political history, Soweto has become a popular destination for tourists and travellers looking to learn more about South Africa’s Apartheid past.

Vilakazi Street in Soweto is famous for being home to two Nobel peace prize winners; Archbishop Desmond Tutu and late president Nelson Mandela. Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house is not open for viewing, however, Mandela House has become a museum for the public.

The Nelson Mandela National Museum  or Mandela House was the house where Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962. Mandela donated the house, and it was declared a National Heritage Site in 1999.

Another popular activity to celebrate Youth Day is the  June 16 Trail . This walkway takes guests along the exact route that the students marched on in 1976, during the Soweto Uprising. The trail ends at the  Hector Pieterson memorial  where travellers can see the infamous image of Hector Pieterson being carried out of the crossfire after he was shot by the police.

His ideas are today taught in schools and institutions so that the youth can understand the importance of their contribution to nation-building.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals requires a seismic shift – which can only happen if we empower young people and work with them as equals. " UN Secretary-General António Guterres

2024 Theme: From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development

Digitalization is transforming our world, offering unprecedented opportunities to accelerate sustainable development. Digital technologies such as mobile devices, services, and artificial intelligence are instrumental in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data generated from digital interactions supports evidence-based decision-making. With profound impact across economic, social and environmental dimensions,  digital technologies and data contribute to at least 70 per cent of the 169 SDG targets  while potentially  reducing the cost of achieving these goals by up to USD 55 trillion .

Young people are leading the charge in digital adoption and innovation, with  three-quarters of those aged 15 to 24 using the internet in 2022 , a rate higher than other age groups. However, disparities persist, particularly in low-income countries and among young women, who often have less access to the internet and digital skills compared to their male counterparts. While there is an urgent need to enhance digital inclusion, youth are largely recognized as “digital natives,” using technology to drive change and create solutions. As the 2030 deadline for the SDGs approaches, the role of young people in digital innovation is essential for addressing global issues.

By celebrating the digital contributions of youth, we can inspire further innovation and collaboration towards achieving sustainable development.

Why do we mark International Days?

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of international days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tool. We also mark other UN observances .

The Soweto Uprising in South Africa occurred on June 16, 1976. This day is remembered every year as Youth Day.

In 1976 the South African government insisted that black schools teach some subjects in the Afrikaans language. However, most black students and teachers did not speak Afrikaans. Also, Afrikaans was regarded as the language of the people who were oppressing blacks.

Pupils were very frustrated about the situation. At a meeting in the township of Soweto they decided to hold a protest march. Thousands of children began to march to a stadium for a rally. The police tried to stop the march. They started shooting at the students.

Twelve-year-old Hector Pieterson was among those shot. A photograph of the wounded child was printed in newspapers throughout the world. It became a symbol of the uprising against apartheid.

The violence lasted for days and spread to more than 80 other cities and towns. The event helped bring attention to the efforts to end apartheid in South Africa. When apartheid finally came to an end in the early 1990s, the new government established Youth Day as one of the country’s official holidays.”

Your mind, skills, and creativity contribute to your life, and the lives of the people you care about are the fountain of youth. Youth is happy because it can recognise brilliance. Anyone who retains their capacity to appreciate beauty never ages. Since youth is bombastic.

International Youth Day 2022 Speech

All of you, good morning, and kindly take a seat.

Youth is full of life, hunger for knowledge, and a desire to succeed in all they do. I believe that seeing all of you stunning people here today energizes me. Because of the positive energy, you all radiate, I never grow old. I know and have studied a lot more than you, but even so, I often question if the younger generation is brighter than, the older one when I see how talented they are.

I know that each of you was born in the high-tech era when mobile phones and ipads predominated over traditional dolls and vehicles as your toys. We took classes to learn how to operate the things you first played with when you were a little child. Previously, you were utilizing inventions made by my generation; today, it is up to your generation to improve upon those ideas and come up with something original.

I observe a lack of dedicated effort among young people nowadays, perhaps because things were provided to you without allowing you to earn them. You might not be able to develop something of your own in the future if you don’t study the processes behind all the creations around you. Another essential component of those entire optimistic future scenarios is education.

You are all aware that the more you work at your studies, the better your results will be, but I want to point out that getting more knowledge doesn’t just lead to better grades; it also gets you into a class. A class that would be hard to pass without receiving high grades and attending one of the nation’s most respectable, respected universities.

I hope today has given you pause to consider how you want to live in the future and what you need to do to earn a living. I wish you all the best in the future and hope that my nation’s future will be even better than the present.

International Youth Day 2022 Speech for school

Good morning to everybody.

Respected Principal, professors, my senior sisters and brothers, and loving friends.

I want to thank everyone for granting me the chance to share a message on this International Youth Day.

We are all gathering to celebrate International Youth Day, August 12. International Youth Day is observed annually on August 12 to honor the contributions made by young people worldwide to improving society at large. Additionally, it hopes to encourage students to take a more active role in protecting their country and improving their neighborhoods.

“Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages” is this year’s International Youth Day celebration theme. The young population is seen as being crucial to a nation’s growth. Therefore, a nation’s growth is dependent on its young.

The young have the power to change society and make improvements. The younger generation needs to be highly responsible and abstain from drug use. Our civilization can end poverty by empowering young people.

The government should prioritize giving young people access to all facilities so they may show forth their talents and improve the nation.

The world is now dealing with several severe issues, including war, poverty, and global warming. Only young people, who represent the world’s future, can overcome these dangers. As a youth, we must cooperate to raise the standard of living.

Let’s make a united vow to work together to promote our nation on this International Youth Day.

That’s all I have to say. Thanks a lot.

International Youth Day 2022 Theme

“The inaugural Youth Day was observed in 1999 following UNGA approval of a resolution endorsing the recommendation developed by the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon. Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation For Human And Planetary Health” is the theme of International Youth Day 2022, focusing on the problem and emphasizing that no endeavor could be effective without youth involvement. All of the world’s leaders can succeed in their goals with the help of young people.

The primary goal of last year’s International Youth Day was to emphasize the needs of young people and their involvement by making local, national, and international institutions inclusive of maximizing the youth’s potential to serve their countries.

This year will highlight the problems that young people worldwide are dealing with. For example, half of the juvenile population lacks essential reading and math skills, and childhood poverty is still a societal problem. International Youth Day was therefore established to increase awareness of both local and global concerns.

To expand their possibilities, young people must take the initiative to act. However, the youth encounter difficulties and challenges, and International youth day is urgently needed to overcome these.

As a Teenager in Europe, I Went to Nudist Beaches All the Time. 30 Years Later, Would the Experience Be the Same?

Image may contain Princess Antonia of Luxembourg Sandro Botticelli Art Painting Adult Person and Wedding

In July 2017, I wrote an article about toplessness for Vogue Italia. The director, actor, and political activist Lina Esco had emerged from the world of show business to question public nudity laws in the United States with 2014’s Free the Nipple . Her film took on a life of its own and, thanks to the endorsement from the likes of Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, and Willow Smith, eventually developed into a whole political movement, particularly on social media where the hashtag #FreeTheNipple spread at lightning speed. The same year as that piece, actor Alyssa Milano tweeted “me too” and encouraged others who had been sexually assaulted to do the same, building on the movement activist Tarana Burke had created more than a decade earlier. The rest is history.

In that Vogue article, I chatted with designer Alessandro Michele about a shared memory of our favorite topless beaches of our youth. Anywhere in Italy where water appeared—be it the hard-partying Riviera Romagnola, the traditionally chic Amalfi coast and Sorrento peninsula, the vertiginous cliffs and inlets of Italy’s continuation of the French Côte d’Azur or the towering volcanic rocks of Sicily’s mythological Riviera dei Ciclopi—one was bound to find bodies of all shapes and forms, naturally topless.

In the ’90s, growing up in Italy, naked breasts were everywhere and nobody thought anything about it. “When we look at our childhood photos we recognize those imperfect breasts and those bodies, each with their own story. I think of the ‘un-beauty’ of that time and feel it is actually the ultimate beauty,” Michele told me.

Indeed, I felt the same way. My relationship with toplessness was part of a very democratic cultural status quo. If every woman on the beaches of the Mediterranean—from the sexy girls tanning on the shoreline to the grandmothers eating spaghetti al pomodoro out of Tupperware containers under sun umbrellas—bore equally naked body parts, then somehow we were all on the same team. No hierarchies were established. In general, there was very little naked breast censorship. Free nipples appeared on magazine covers at newsstands, whether tabloids or art and fashion magazines. Breasts were so naturally part of the national conversation and aesthetic that Ilona Staller (also known as Cicciolina) and Moana Pozzi, two porn stars, cofounded a political party called the Love Party. I have a clear memory of my neighbor hanging their party’s banner out his window, featuring a topless Cicciolina winking.

A lot has changed since those days, but also since that initial 2017 piece. There’s been a feminist revolution, a transformation of women’s fashion and gender politics, the absurd overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction in New York, the intensely disturbing overturning of Roe v Wade and the current political battle over reproductive rights radiating from America and far beyond. One way or another, the female body is very much the site of political battles as much as it is of style and fashion tastes. And maybe for this reason naked breasts seem to populate runways and street style a lot more than they do beaches—it’s likely that being naked at a dinner party leaves more of a permanent mark than being naked on a glamorous shore. Naked “dressing” seems to be much more popular than naked “being.” It’s no coincidence that this year Saint Laurent, Chloé, Ferragamo, Tom Ford, Gucci, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Valentino all paid homage to sheer dressing in their collections, with lacy dresses, see-through tops, sheer silk hosiery fabric, and close-fitting silk dresses. The majority of Anthony Vaccarello’s fall 2024 collection was mostly transparent. And even off the runway, guests at the Saint Laurent show matched the mood. Olivia Wilde appeared in a stunning see-through dark bodysuit, Georgia May Jagger wore a sheer black halter top, Ebony Riley wore a breathtaking V-neck, and Elsa Hosk went for translucent polka dots.

In some strange way, it feels as if the trends of the ’90s have swapped seats with those of today. When, in 1993, a 19-year-old Kate Moss wore her (now iconic) transparent, bronze-hued Liza Bruce lamé slip dress to Elite Model Agency’s Look of the Year Awards in London, I remember seeing her picture everywhere and feeling in awe of her daring and grace. I loved her simple sexy style, with her otherworldly smile, the hair tied back in a bun. That very slip has remained in the collective unconscious for decades, populating thousands of internet pages, but in remembering that night Moss admitted that the nude look was totally unintentional: “I had no idea why everyone was so excited—in the darkness of Corinne [Day’s] Soho flat, the dress was not see-through!” That’s to say that nude dressing was usually mostly casual and not intellectualized in the context of a larger movement.

Hailey and Justin Bieber Welcome Their First Baby&-And Reveal the Name

But today nudity feels loaded in different ways. In April, actor and author Julia Fox appeared in Los Angeles in a flesh-colored bra that featured hairy hyper-realist prints of breasts and nipples, and matching panties with a print of a sewn-up vagina and the words “closed” on it, as a form of feminist performance art. Breasts , an exhibition curated by Carolina Pasti, recently opened as part of the 60th Venice Biennale at Palazzo Franchetti and showcases works that span from painting and sculpture to photography and film, reflecting on themes of motherhood, empowerment, sexuality, body image, and illness. The show features work by Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Louise Bourgeois, and an incredible painting by Bernardino Del Signoraccio of Madonna dell’Umiltà, circa 1460-1540. “It was fundamental for me to include a Madonna Lactans from a historical perspective. In this intimate representation, the Virgin reveals one breast while nurturing the child, the organic gesture emphasizing the profound bond between mother and child,” Pasti said when we spoke.

Through her portrayal of breasts, she delves into the delicate balance of strength and vulnerability within the female form. I spoke to Pasti about my recent musings on naked breasts, which she shared in a deep way. I asked her whether she too noticed a disparity between nudity on beaches as opposed to the one on streets and runways, and she agreed. Her main concern today is around censorship. To Pasti, social media is still far too rigid around breast exposure and she plans to discuss this issue through a podcast that she will be launching in September, together with other topics such as motherhood, breastfeeding, sexuality, and breast cancer awareness.

With summer at the door, it was my turn to see just how much of the new reread on transparency would apply to beach life. In the last few years, I noticed those beaches Michele and I reminisced about have grown more conservative and, despite being the daughter of unrepentant nudists and having a long track record of militant topless bathing, I myself have felt a bit more shy lately. Perhaps a woman in her 40s with two children is simply less prone to taking her top off, but my memories of youth are populated by visions of bare-chested mothers surveilling the coasts and shouting after their kids in the water. So when did we stop? And why? When did Michele’s era of “un-beauty” end?

In order to get back in touch with my own naked breasts I decided to revisit the nudist beaches of my youth to see what had changed. On a warm day in May, I researched some local topless beaches around Rome and asked a friend to come with me. Two moms, plus our four children, two girls and two boys of the same ages. “Let’s make an experiment of this and see what happens,” I proposed.

The kids all yawned, but my friend was up for it. These days to go topless, especially on urban beaches, you must visit properties that have an unspoken nudist tradition. One of these in Rome is the natural reserve beach at Capocotta, south of Ostia, but I felt a bit unsure revisiting those sands. In my memory, the Roman nudist beaches often equated to encounters with promiscuous strangers behind the dunes. I didn’t want to expose the kids, so, being that I am now a wise adult, I went ahead and picked a compromise. I found a nude-friendly beach on the banks of the Farfa River, in the rolling Sabina hills.

We piled into my friend’s car and drove out. The kids were all whining about the experiment. “We don’t want to see naked mums!” they complained. “Can’t you just lie and say you went to a nudist beach?”

We parked the car and walked across the medieval fairy-tale woods until we reached the path that ran along the river. All around us were huge trees and gigantic leaves. It had rained a lot recently and the vegetation had grown incredibly. We walked past the remains of a Roman road. The colors all around were bright green, the sky almost fluorescent blue. The kids got sidetracked by the presence of frogs. According to the indications, the beach was about a mile up the river. Halfway down the path, we bumped into a couple of young guys in fanny packs. I scanned them for signs of quintessential nudist attitude, but realized I actually had no idea what that was. I asked if we were headed in the right direction to go to “the beach”. They nodded and gave us a sly smile, which I immediately interpreted as a judgment about us as mothers, and more generally about our age, but I was ready to vindicate bare breasts against ageism.

We reached a small pebbled beach, secluded and bordered by a huge trunk that separated it from the path. A group of girls was there, sharing headphones and listening to music. To my dismay they were all wearing the tops and bottoms of their bikinis. One of them was in a full-piece bathing suit and shorts. “See, they are all wearing bathing suits. Please don’t be the weird mums who don’t.”

At this point, it was a matter of principle. My friend and I decided to take our bathing suits off completely, if only for a moment, and jumped into the river. The boys stayed on the beach with full clothes and shoes on, horrified. The girls went in behind us with their bathing suits. “Are you happy now? my son asked. “Did you prove your point?”

I didn’t really know what my point actually was. I think a part of me wanted to feel entitled to those long-gone decades of naturalism. Whether this was an instinct, or as Pasti said, “an act that was simply tied to the individual freedom of each woman”, it was hard to tell. At this point in history, the two things didn’t seem to cancel each other out—in fact, the opposite. Taking off a bathing suit, at least for my generation who never had to fight for it, had unexpectedly turned into a radical move and maybe I wanted to be part of the new discourse. Also, the chances of me going out in a fully sheer top were slim these days, but on the beach it was different. I would always fight for an authentic topless experience.

After our picnic on the river, we left determined to make our way—and without children—to the beaches of Capocotta. In truth, no part of me actually felt very subversive doing something I had been doing my whole life, but it still felt good. Once a free breast, always a free breast.
