The UCAS Personal Statement can sometimes be a student’s only chance to impress a UK university. Read our in-depth guide to helping your students plan & write a winning application.

There are hundreds of articles out there on how to write a UCAS Personal Statement that will grab the attention of a UK university admissions officer.  

But if you’re working with students to help them perfect their Personal Statement in time for the  relevant UCAS deadlines , we can sum up the secret to success in three words.

The UCAS Personal Statement is a student’s chance to talk about why they want to study for a particular degree, course or subject discipline at a UK university. 

As they set about writing a personal statement, students need to demonstrate the drive, ambition, relevant skills and notable achievements that make them a  suitable candidate for the universities they have chosen to apply to . 

But the UCAS Personal Statement requires students to write a lot about themselves in a relatively short space of time. That’s why lots of planning, a tight structure and a compelling story are essential if a student’s Personal Statement is to truly excel.

As they begin to plan their Personal Statement, students may feel intimidated. It’s not easy to summarise your academic interests and personal ambitions, especially when you’re competing for a place on a course which is popular or has demanding entry requirements. In particular, students will likely come up against the following challenges.

Time pressure

Unfortunately, the Personal Statement (and other aspects of university preparation) comes during the busiest year of the student’s academic life so far.

Students, and indeed teachers and counsellors, must undertake the planning and writing of the personal statement whilst juggling other commitments, classes and deadlines, not to mention revision and open day visits!

Because there is already a lot of academic pressure on students in their final year of secondary school, finding the time and headspace for the personal statement can be hard, and can mean it gets pushed to the last minute. The risks of leaving it to the last minute are fairly obvious – the application will seem rushed and the necessary thought and planning won’t go into  making the personal statement the best it can be . 

Sticking closely to the Personal Statement format

The character limit which UCAS sets for the personal statement is very strict – up to 4,000 characters of text. This means that students have to express themselves in a clear and concise way; it’s also important that they don’t feel the need to fill the available space needlessly.  Planning and redrafting of a personal statement is essential .

Making it stand out

This is arguably the greatest challenge facing students – making sure that their statement sets them apart from everyone else who is competing for a place on any given course; in 2022 alone, UCAS received applications from 683,650 applicants (+1.6k on 2021) students. In addition, UCAS uses its own dedicated team and purpose built software to check every application for plagiarism, so it’s crucial that students craft a truly  original personal statement which is entirely their own work .

Planning a ucas personal statement.

It might sound like a no-brainer, but it’s vital that students plan their Personal Statement before they start writing it. Specifically, the planning phase could include: 

  • Students thoroughly researching the UK university courses they plan on applying to. 
  • Deciding on what relevant material to include in their Personal Statement (we’ll cover this in more detail later on). 
  • Writing an unedited first draft where they just get their thoughts and ideas down on paper. 

Structuring a UCAS Personal Statement

As we’ve discussed, the UCAS Personal Statement requires students to be extremely disciplined – they will be required to condense a lot of information into a relatively short written statement. This means that, after they’ve written a rough first draft, they need to think carefully about how they structure the final statement. 

A stand out Personal Statement will need a tight structure, with an introduction and a conclusion that make an impact and really help to tell a story about who your student is, and why they are drawn to studying this particular degree. 

This brings us nicely to our third and final ingredient…

Telling a story with a Personal Statement

The UCAS Personal Statement is a student’s opportunity to show a university who they are and how their life experiences have shaped their academic interests and goals. 

So a good Personal Statement needs to offer a compelling narrative, and that means making sure that a student’s writing is well-structured, and that every sentence and paragraph is serving the statement’s ultimate purpose –  to convince a university that your student deserves a place on their subject of choice. 

How to help your students start their UCAS Personal Statement

In order to ensure that a personal statement is delivered on time and to an appropriate standard, it’s essential to plan thoroughly before writing it. Here are some questions you can ask your students before they start writing:

How can you demonstrate a formative interest in your subject?

It may sound obvious but, in order for any UCAS personal statement to have the necessary structure and clarity, students need to think hard about why they want to study their chosen subject. Ask them to think about their responses to the following questions:

What inspired you to study your chosen subject?

Example answer:  My desire to understand the nature of reality has inspired me to apply for Physics and Philosophy

Was there a formative moment when your perspective on this subject changed, or when you decided you wanted to study this subject in more detail?

Example answer:  My interest in philosophy was awakened when I questioned my childhood religious beliefs; reading Blackburn’s “Think”, convinced me to scrutinise my assumptions about the world, and to ensure I could justify my beliefs.

Can you point to any role models, leading thinkers, or notable literature which has in turn affected your thinking and/or inspired you?

Example answer :  The search for a theory of everything currently being conducted by physicists is of particular interest to me and in “The Grand Design” Hawking proposes a collection of string theories, dubbed M-theory, as the explanation of why the universe is the way it is.

Asking your students to think about the “why” behind their chosen subject discipline is a useful first step in helping them to organise their overall statement. Next, they need to be able to demonstrate evidence of their suitability for a course or degree. 

How have you demonstrated the skills and aptitudes necessary for your chosen course?

Encourage students to think about times where they have demonstrated the necessary skills to really stand out. It’s helpful to think about times when they have utilised these skills both inside and outside the classroom. Ask students to consider their responses to the following questions. 

Can you demonstrate critical and independent thinking around your chosen subject discipline?

Example answer :  Currently I am studying Maths and Economics in addition to Geography. Economics has been a valuable tool, providing the nuts and bolts to economic processes, and my geography has provided a spatial and temporal element.

Are you able to demonstrate skills and competencies which will be necessary for university study?

These include qualities such as teamwork, time management and the ability to organise workload responsibly.

Example answer:  This year I was selected to be captain of the 1st XV rugby team and Captain of Swimming which will allow me to further develop my leadership, teamwork and organisational skills.

How have your extracurricular activities helped prepare you for university?

Students may believe that their interests outside the classroom aren’t relevant to their university application. So encourage them to think about how their other interests can demonstrate the subject-related skills that universities are looking for in an application. Ask students to think about any of the following activities, and how they might be related back to the subject they are applying for.

  • Clubs/societies, or volunteering work which they can use to illustrate attributes such as teamwork, an interest in community service and the ability to manage their time proactively.
  • Have they been elected/nominated as a team captain, or the head of a particular club or society, which highlights leadership skills and an ability to project manage?
  • Can they point to any awards or prizes they may have won, whether it’s taking up a musical instrument, playing a sport, or participating in theatre/performing arts?
  • Have they achieved grades or qualifications as part of their extracurricular activities? These can only help to demonstrate aptitude and hard work. 

How to write the UCAS Personal Statement [with examples] 

If sufficient planning has gone into the personal statement, then your students should be ready to go!

In this next section, we’ll break down the individual components of the UCAS Personal Statement and share some useful examples.

These examples come from a Personal Statement in support of an application to study Environmental Science at a UK university.

Introduction.

This is the chance for an applying student to really grab an admission tutor’s attention. Students need to demonstrate both a personal passion for their subject, and explain why they have an aptitude for it .  This section is where students should begin to discuss any major influences or inspirations that have led them to this subject choice. 

Example :  My passion for the environment has perhaps come from the fact that I have lived in five different countries: France, England, Spain, Sweden and Costa Rica. Moving at the age of 15 from Sweden, a calm and organized country, to Costa Rica, a more diverse and slightly chaotic country, was a shock for me at first and took me out of my comfort zone […] Also, living in Costa Rica, one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, definitely helped me realize how vulnerable the world is and how we need to take care of it in a sustainable manner. 

This opening paragraph immediately grabs the reader’s attention by giving the reader an insight into this student’s background and links their academic interests with something specific from the student’s personal backstory. 

Discussing Academic Achievements 

The next paragraph in this Personal Statement discusses the student’s academic achievements. Because this student has had an international education, they frame their academic achievements in the context of their personal background. They also cite useful examples of other curricula they have studied and the grades they have achieved. 

Example : 

Throughout my academic life I have shown myself to be a responsible student as well as a hard working one, despite the fact that I have had to move around a lot. I have achieved several other accomplishments such as a high A (286/300) in AS Spanish at age 15, and also completed a Spanish course of secondary studies for ‘MEP’(Ministerio de Educacion Publica), which is a system from Costa Rica.   

You’ll notice that this student doesn’t just list their achievements – their strong academic performance is always linked back to a wider discussion of their personal experiences. 

Showcasing Extracurricular Activities

As well as discussing academic achievements, a good Personal Statement should also discuss the student’s extracurricular activities, and how they relate back to the student’s overall university aspirations. 

By the third/fourth paragraph of the Personal Statement, students should think about incorporating their extracurricular experiences, 

Another valuable experience was when my class spent a week at a beach called ‘Pacuare’ in order to help prevent the eggs of the endangered leatherback turtle from being stolen by poachers who go on to sell them like chicken eggs. We all gained teamwork experience, which was needed in order to hide the eggs silently without scaring the mother turtles, as well as making it more difficult for the poachers to find them. 

When the poachers set fire to one of the sustainable huts where we were staying, not only did I gain self-awareness about the critical situation of the world and its ecosystems, I also matured and became even more motivated to study environmental sciences at university.

This is a particularly striking example of using extracurricular activities to showcase a student’s wider passion for the degree subject they want to study. 

Not only does this Personal Statement have a story about volunteering to save an endangered species, it also illustrates this applicants’ wider worldview, and helps to explain their motivation for wanting to study Environmental Science. 

Concluding the UCAS Personal Statement

The conclusion to a UCAS Personal Statement will have to be concise, and will need to tie all of a student’s academic and extracurricular achievements. After all, a compelling story will need a great ending. 

Remember that students need to be mindful of the character limit of a Personal Statement, so a conclusion need only be the length of a small paragraph, or even a couple of sentences. 

“ After having many varied experiences, I truly think I can contribute to university in a positive way, and would love to study in England where I believe I would gain more skills and education doing a first degree than in any other country.  “

A good Personal Statement conclusion will end with an affirmation of how the student thinks they can contribute to university life, and why they believe the institution in question should accept them. Because the student in this example has a such a rich and varied international background, they also discuss the appeal of studying at university in England. 

It’s worth taking a quick look at a few other examples of how other students have chosen to conclude their Personal Statement. 

Medicine (Imperial College, London) 

Interest in Medicine aside, other enthusiasms of mine include languages, philosophy, and mythology. It is curiously fitting that in ancient Greek lore, healing was but one of the many arts Apollo presided over, alongside archery and music.   I firmly believe that a doctor should explore the world outside the field of  Medicine, and it is with such experiences that I hope to better empathise and connect with the patients I will care for in my medical career. 

You’ll notice that this example very specifically ties the students’ academic and extracurricular activities together, and ties the Personal Statement back to their values and beliefs. 

Economic History with Economics (London School of Economics)

The highlight of my extra-curricular activities has been my visit to Shanghai with the Lord Mayor’s trade delegation in September 2012. I was selected to give a speech at this world trade conference due to my interest in economic and social history. […] I particularly enjoyed the seminar format, and look forward to experiencing more of this at university. My keen interest and desire to further my knowledge of history and economics, I believe, would make the course ideal for me.

By contrast, this conclusion ties a memorable experience back to the specifics of how the student will be taught at the London School of Economics – specifically, the appeal of learning in seminar format! 

There’s no magic formula for concluding a Personal Statement. But you’ll see that what all of these examples have in common is that they tie a student’s personal and academic experiences together – and tell a university something about their aspirations for the future.

Know the audience

It can be easy for students to forget that the person reading a personal statement is invariably an expert in their field. This is why an ability to convey passion and think critically about their chosen subject is essential for a personal statement to stand out. Admissions tutors will also look for students who can structure their writing (more on this below). 

Students should be themselves

Remember that many students are competing for places on a university degree against fierce competition. And don’t forget that UCAS has the means to spot plagiarism. So students need to create a truly honest and individual account of who they are, what they have achieved and, perhaps most importantly, why they are driven to study this particular subject.

Proof-read (then proof-read again!)

Time pressures mean that students can easily make mistakes with their Personal Statements. As the deadline grows closer, it’s vital that they are constantly checking and rechecking their writing and to ensure that shows them in the best possible light. 

Meanwhile, when it comes to giving feedback to students writing their Personal Statements, make sure you’re as honest and positive as possible in the days and weeks leading up to submission day.

Forming a key part of your university application, you should use the UCAS personal statement to showcase how your skills, experience and aspirations make you a good fit for the course

What is a university personal statement?

With two sides of A4 to work with, this is your opportunity to tell course tutors in your own words the reasons why you feel you'd be an asset to their university.

How long should a personal statement be?

There's no maximum word count, but you'll need to remain within the 4,000 character limit (including spaces and punctuation) allowed in your UCAS application, as well as keeping the statement to a total of 47 lines of text.

UCAS recommends that you write your personal statement in Microsoft Word before copying and pasting it into the online application form. This is because the application page times out after being inactive for 35 minutes. You'll still need to account for how individual characters are counted differently between Microsoft Word and the online form.

What do I write about?

When considering what to include in your personal statement, take time to think about the reasons you're applying to university and what makes you a suitable candidate.

To make this work for different courses and universities, you'll need to find some common ground by providing examples of why you'll be a success - demonstrating enthusiasm for the choices you've made and how they fit in with your career ambitions.

You'll need to talk about the relevant skills, experience and achievements you've gained through extra-curricular activities - whether these are sporting, musical or creative.

As well as going through your academic record to date, your personal statement also gives you the opportunity to mention any work experience or volunteering you've undertaken, detailing what you've learned from it. For instance, you may have been involved with the Young Enterprise programme at school and have a better idea of how to manage your money.

It's never too late to show you're actively preparing for higher education. Get involved with an extra-curricular club, secure a part-time job or do some volunteering. You could even complete a free online course in a relevant subject with an organisation such as FutureLearn or the Tech Nation Digital Business Academy .

If you're an international student, you could discuss why the UK is your preferred study destination ahead of universities in your own country. Don't forget to mention the English language tests, courses and qualifications you've taken.

Finally, if there are any personal or financial circumstances that have had a strong bearing on your performance at school or college, you can outline these in this statement.

How do I write a personal statement?

By breaking your personal statement down into sections, you can ensure you cover the most relevant points.

Course-relevant skills and credentials should be given prominence in the overall structure. You can use the course descriptions to help you.

However, as you only have the one personal statement for all your choices, if you've selected a variety of subjects that aren't that similar, you'll need to focus on the transferable skills and common qualities typically valued by universities - for example, creativity or problem-solving.

Adopt a simple, concise and natural style for writing your statement, while still showing enthusiasm. Allow your personality to shine through.

It can often take a number of redrafts until the statement is ready, so allow plenty of time to write it properly, and set yourself a schedule.

Get used to reading your statement aloud and asking for feedback from family, teachers and advisers before redrafting to make sure your writing flows well. You'll also need to check for the correct punctuation, spelling and grammar and not just rely on a spellchecker.

Keep an up-to-date copy of your statement saved so you can refer back to it during the interview process.

How do I start a personal statement?

At this point, think about why you're applying for the course, and how you became interested in it in the first place. Was it through work experience or studying the subject at A-level?

Once you've noted down your reasons for choosing the course, you can move on to your skills and what makes you stand out positively from other applicants, providing evidence of where each attribute has been utilised.

After you've written this down, condense it so it's less wordy. You can then attempt to write a punchy opening paragraph showcasing your excitement at the prospect of going to university, and an understanding of what you're getting yourself into.

What should I avoid?

  • As you'll only have the one statement, it's important not to mention universities by name - unless you plan on applying to just a single institution.
  • Remember that admissions staff may not share your sense of humour, so steer clear of anything that might get misinterpreted.
  • Refrain from using clichés or making arrogant or exaggerated statements.
  • Resist any temptation to use somebody else's work as your own. The UCAS Similarity Detection Service utilises the Copycatch system, which will compare your statement against those stored within a comprehensive library of statements - those sent to UCAS and elsewhere (including paper publications).
  • Be careful not to ramble. Structuring your work so you know how much space you have for each section will make sticking to your main points much easier.

A personal statement is an important part of your UCAS application, which will need to be submitted to study in the UK. It will support your application to study at university or college, and is a great way to showcase your personal qualities, skills and passions. Crucially, it gives you a platform to demonstrate to admissions tutors and lecturers how you are the perfect candidate for your chosen course or subject.

How long should a personal statement be?

Your personal statement can be around 47 lines (there is no word limit but there is a character limit of 4,000 characters, which is roughly 1 side of A4). You will only write one statement for all of your choices, so it needs to be relevant/applicable for all.

Tips on what makes a good personal statement

• Think about what gets you excited about the course you are applying for and just start writing - you will be amazed at how effective it is to get all your thoughts on paper. • Be positive when you describe how you get motivated about the course you want to study, and what inspired your decision. • Talk about your transferable skills and knowledge - e.g. leadership, teamwork, problem solving, communication, organisation, that will help you on the course. • Talk about you and what makes you unique, exciting, interesting. What makes you stand out? • Back it up with evidence - use evidence from relevant work experience, extracurricular activities, outside reading, and all the other things you do. • Don’t overcomplicate things, leave out flowery language and stick to plain English.

In summary, strive to make your personal statement authentic, a good combination of head and heart that captures your enthusiasm. Take your time and you’ll produce something special that sums up what you are all about.

What is a personal statement.

A personal statement is a short written account used to support your university application. It is your opportunity to ‘sell’ yourself to universities. And to show how and why you are a good candidate for your chosen course. A well-written application may convince a university to make you an offer or invite you to an interview. 

How to start a personal statement?

It’s never too early to start work on your personal statement. In fact, we’d recommend you give yourself as much time as possible.

Before you begin it’s important you have an idea of the course or subject area you want to study. Your personal statement needs to be specific so knowing what course you’re interested in will make it easier to start writing. It’s a good idea to check out the course descriptions in university prospectuses or on their website. This way you can find out the skills and experience that you’ll need. You can then reflect on how these relate to your own interests and qualities. 

Where to begin?

  • Start with an engaging and positive introductory sentence which makes the admissions Tutor want to read on.
  • Make it different. The most overused opening phrases are: “From a young age I have always been interested in…” and “For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated with…”
  • State your reasons for applying to your chosen course and what it is that motivates you.

What makes a good personal statement?

The great thing about a personal statement is that it’s exactly that - personal. This is your chance to stand out from the crowd and explain why you’re the right choice for your chosen course.

It’s important that the statement reflects you, so you need to write in your own individual style. However, there are certain facts Admissions Tutors will be expecting to see. So it's important that you include these to ensure you give the best account of yourself, your skills and your experience.

Everything that you write should be relevant and linked to the course(s) you are applying for. Whilst you will only submit one personal statement it will be seen multiple times by all the universities and courses you have applied for.

Here are some questions to think about to ensure your statement stands out:

  • Why do you want to study the course? You need to show that you have a genuine interest in the subject area and the motivation to immerse yourself in it.
  • What makes you suitable? This is your chance to show how your experiences have prepared you to meet the demands of the course.

How long should a personal statement be?

Your personal statement needs to stay within the 4000 character limit set by UCAS. This includes spaces and blank lines. This might seem like a lot, but it's only around 1 side of typed A4 paper. So you need to keep it clear and concise. Use the UCAS personal statement tool to help you keep within the limit as well as tips on how to structure your statement.

How to structure a personal statement?

There is no set layout for your personal statement. But here are some style and structure tips to help you along the way:

  • Make sure you sound interested in the course. Admissions Tutors will recognise applicants who aren’t totally committed.
  • Don’t use bullet points. A personal statement is a chance to show how you can make a reasoned argument in continuous writing.
  • Avoid repetition.
  • You need to show rather than tell the Admissions Tutor that you are a good candidate. So don’t just list all your skills and achievements. Pick the most relevant, explain them carefully and provide examples.
  • Check your statement for spelling and grammar. And then check again.
  • Ask your parents, friends and/or teachers to read through your finished statement. They can help to make sure it flows and that you’ve not forgotten anything.

Completing and submitting your UCAS application

Start your UCAS application

You will need to start your UCAS application around September in the year before you want to apply to university. For example, if you want to start in September 2025, start your application in September 2024.

You can start you application as early as May, but you won't be able to submit until September.

You'll need to submit your form to college so they can add your reference.

Apply by the deadline

Make sure you submit your UCAS application online by the deadline. Deadlines vary each year and are different depending on the course you want to study.

After you apply

Once you submit your application through UCAS, they will send you an acknowledgement. They will then forward your application to your chosen institutions.

Getting a decision on your application

Once you've submitted your application, you may have several stages before you find out if you have an offer.

Institutions will look at a number of things to make their decision. This includes your personal statement, reference and predicted grades.

Interviews and auditions

You might be invited to interview or audition to see if you're right for the course. This is also your chance to see if it's the right place for you.

Receiving an offer

If you submitted your application by the January deadline, you should receive all of your offers by March. Some courses and late applications may not receive responses until later in the cycle.

You can receive a conditional or unconditional offer, depending on whether you already have your grades or not.

Offer holder days

Some universities might invite you to an offer holder or applicant day . This is a great opportunity to get a taste for your course and meet your tutors. 

Accepting your offer

Usually, you'll need to reply to any offers you have received by May. This depends on when you submit your UCAS application.

If you have conditional offers, you'll be able to choose one university as your firm choice, and one as insurance .

If you've used all five choices on your application, and you're not holding any offers, then you can add extra choices to your application - free of charge.

Wait for your results and prepare to enrol

If you're waiting for your results, you should receive these in either July or August. This depends on what qualification you have taken. 

Your offer will either be confirmed or rejected based on your results.

If you don't receive the results you expected, or you apply after July, you will be entered into UCAS Clearing . This helps match you to university places that haven't yet been filled.

Once you've confirmed your offer at your chosen university, you will receive information about how to enrol .

Writing a statement needn’t be daunting. With enough planning and preparation, you can submit a strong application that clearly and concisely demonstrates your suitability.

What is a personal statement?

A personal statement is your time to shine and a crucial part of your university application. Admission tutors read hundreds of applications. By paying close attention to the presentation and content of your personal statement, you can stand out from the crowd.

How long should a personal statement be?

The length of your personal statement will depend on the course you are apply for. Direct applications will specify the word count.

Applications through UCAS

UCAS specify that your personal statement for university should be 4000 characters, including spaces and punctuation, and no more than 47 lines. UCAS have some handy guidance on writing your undergraduate personal statement .

How to write your personal statement

It is important to outline the reasons why you want to study a particular subject in your personal statement. Don’t be afraid to sell yourself. Explain why you are applying and what makes you a suitable candidate. Outline your achievements, skills, and experiences.

You should also remember to be concise – don’t repeat information that you may have included elsewhere in the application. Spelling, accuracy of grammar, and diversity of vocabulary are all important factors. So, use a spell check facility to ensure your spelling and grammar are accurate.

How to start a personal statement

Begin with why you chose this course. It’s not just about what you write, but how you write it. Remember to use language that conveys your enthusiasm. What excites you about this subject?

Things to include

  • Your suitability and enthusiasm for the subject(s) you wish to study.
  • Your transferable skills.
  • Work experience relevant to the subject area.
  • Your career aspirations, academic interests, and the reasons why you want to go to university.
  • Personal qualities and other interests that make you stand out from the crowd.

Things not to include

  • Copying content directly from websites or publications. Your application will be passed through plagiarism detection software. Any significant similarities could result in your application being excluded.
  • Outlining negative experiences. Instead, outline how you successfully overcame obstacles.
  • Relisting information submitted elsewhere in the application. This includes qualifications.
  • Using slang, abbreviations, or text speak. Humour should also be considered carefully. It should be used sparingly, or preferably, not at all.
  • Providing irrelevant information that doesn’t enhance your application.
  • Making fabricated or unsubstantiated claims. You need to provide supportive detail to back up your assertions.

How to end a personal statement

End your personal statement by leaving a strong lasting impression. What makes your personal statement unique? You. Write about your ideas for the future. What you would bring to the course. And what you want to get from your overall university experience.

Check, check, and check again

Show your personal statement to your friends and family to get feedback. Where possible, allow yourself time to fine tune your work before submitting it.

When you’re applying for postgraduate study, the most important part of your application – aside from your name and qualification to study the course – is your personal statement. It is the part that really allows your experience to shine, and proves to the university that you’re applying to that they should give you a place. In this post, we’ll be looking at some of the things that you need to know about writing your personal statement when you’re applying for postgraduate study.

Final thoughts

Your personal statement is simply a short essay about yourself and your suitability for the course you are applying for that you add to your postgraduate application . It is there for you to showcase yourself to the admissions team, and to help them to see that you would be a great addition to this year’s cohort. 

If you are a UK student and applied to university for undergraduate study through UCAS, then you’ll have already written a personal statement for that. Although you might read that to reflect on when you’re going to write your postgraduate personal statement, don’t use it as your guide, especially if you’ve taken a break from your studies and have worked, and gained industry experience since then. Several years will have passed since you wrote your undergraduate statement, meaning that you will have developed significantly, both academically and personally since then – and that is something you definitely want to demonstrate in your application.

For international students that are applying for postgraduate study, the process may be a little different. You’ll need to consult the guidelines for the institution to ensure that you clearly demonstrate that you meet the requirements for the course. In your personal statement, you’ll be able to discuss the same things that other applicants would, such as your career aspirations. You’ll also be able to discuss how your time studying in the UK will contribute to your career prospects, or if you anticipate further study when you have completed the course. 

One of the biggest concerns for universities welcoming international students is that their use of English is good enough to comprehend the course. Your personal statement is an ideal place to demonstrate that even if English isn’t your first language, you speak and write it well enough to be interviewed for a place. 

Whatever your current status – as a recent graduate, international student or someone returning to study from employment, there’s a good chance that your academic interests have evolved since you began your undergraduate study. You’ll need to include a section about what really appeals to you about the postgraduate course you are applying for. Remember to show why you’re a great fit for the university, and what value you will contribute to the course while you’re studying.

Why you want to study the course, and why you deserve a place

When writing a personal statement for masters or any other postgraduate course, bear in mind that it’s your sales pitch to the institution. You will need to sell yourself, so include everything that demonstrates your academic interests and career aspirations. Discuss why the university and the course is the right choice for you, such as the staff members that you would like to work with, if there are opportunities to gain work experience as part of the course to show that you’ve done suitable research, and have thought out your options clearly.

You may be able to apply for credit for your previous studies – and if you hold an accounting degree, you may be able to dramatically reduce the number of exams you will need to sit.

The prestige attached to the ACA is illustrated in the average salary once qualified – globally, the average ICAEW member salary is £108,000.

How long does the ACCA route take? The ACCA allows the qualification to be studied over ten years, but it is possible to complete it within three years if you can dedicate the time.

Why the course contributes to your goals

Why anything negative could be a positive.

If there are any points of concern that an admissions team member might have about your application, you should address them in your personal statement. Don’t ignore them – especially if they are really obvious! If you encountered low grades at a certain point, or you have a gap in your employment history, be clear about the reasons they happened.

Ensure that you are positive about it though. For example, if you were able to achieve a high grade despite illness, then talk about how you did this. If your gap in employment was due to family matters, state what happened and what steps you took to return to work. If you’re an international student and you have never lived away from your home country before, how do you expect to adapt to culture differences? Resilience, adaptability and the ability to move on from a setback are qualities that universities and employers look for, especially with the demands of postgraduate study.

When you are considering what to write, a few points you should look to cover include:

  • Why you have chosen the university you are applying to, and if you are applying to a particular campus location, what appeals most about that one
  • Your reasons for applying for the course
  • What your intended career path is, and why studying the course will support your endeavours
  • If you’re an international student and universities in your home country and the course you are applying for is offered in universities there, explain why you want to study in the UK and how you benefit from studying here
  • If you have been in industry for a while, cover why you want to return to your studies, as well as what you bring to the course from your experience in the field
  • Once you have completed the course, what do you intend to do next?

Variations on postgraduate personal statements

It is important to note that every course has unique requirements for their personal statements. If you’re applying for a postgraduate degree in a science subject, you’ll need different information than if you are applying for an arts or business subject. Always follow the guidance from UCAS or the university, but there are a few points to note about specific courses: 

  • For the Legal Practice Course , you’ll apply for up to three courses through the centralised applications system, and you’ll have up to 10,000 characters for your statement.
  • To apply for a Psychology conversion course , you’ll do so with the institution directly. 
  • To apply for PGCE Primary teacher training to become qualified to teach Key Stage 1 or 2, you’ll need to have gained classroom experience, so ensure this is the main focus of your PGCE personal statement.

To work with older children, you will need a PGCE Secondary certificate, and you’ll apply via UCAS Teacher Training (UTT) . Some of these go without saying, but we’ll go over them anyway!

  • Never lie or exaggerate about the extent of your achievements. You will almost certainly be found out, which could damage your career down the line. 
  • Don’t put someone as a reference that doesn’t know you. Your references are likely to be contacted – many professors know each other. 
  • Avoid using sentences that run on too long.
  • Avoid using any type of inspirational quote that you might find on Instagram!
  • Don’t claim that your career is your passion. It might be, but you don’t want your statement to be cheesy!
  • Steer clear of using any kind of begging or pleading to be admitted to the course. If you’ve written a strong personal statement, and your qualifications back up your application, you shouldn’t need to plead for a place on your chosen course. If a place on your chosen course isn’t available, you have plenty of options – either applying again next year, or finding another course at another institution. 
  • Don’t pay compliments to the institution – staff are well aware of the reputation – and why prospective students are attracted. 
  • Don’t include autobiographical information.
  • Don’t waffle – your statement needs to be succinct, with just the relevant information. 

Remember that you don’t have a huge amount of space in your personal statement, so don’t repeat anything that is already included in your application such as module information. You also don’t need to include information about your extracurricular activities – unless it is relevant to the course you are applying for, of course.

While there are countless online templates available online that you could follow to create your personal statement, we strongly advise against using them. You might look at a few to get a good idea about what sort of things to include – but following them exactly will mean your statement won’t feel authentic, and when you attend an interview, it will be clear that you didn’t write your statement without support. 

In terms of formatting your personal statement, if using headings helps you to direct the flow of your statement, then use them – you can always take them out when you’ve finished if you feel they are unnecessary. If you are applying directly to the university on their form, then use a professional font – Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman are good choices, in size 11 or 12. UCAS Postgraduate applications are formatted automatically, so you won’t need to worry about font or size. 

How should my postgraduate personal statement start?​

Put yourself in the place of the admissions staff. They are reading thousands of applications every year, so you need to get to the point and sell yourself as quickly as possible. Your opening line should make an impact, but shouldn’t be gimmicky, use cliché or exaggerations. Start with an introduction that shows why you want to study the course. Once you’ve covered that, move onto proving why you are an ideal candidate for the course, detailing relevant knowledge and skills. When you’re finalising your statement, be clear and to the point, and ensure you state why you’re a perfect candidate. 

If you can’t think of a good way to start your statement, then work on the rest of it first. Once you know exactly what is going in your statement, and the flow of your writing, you will probably find it easier to decide on your opening sentence and paragraph. 

How should my postgraduate personal statement end?​

Keep the end of your statement to the point, but by the point that you are at your concluding statement, anyone who is reading your statement should be in no doubt that you should be given a place. Your final statement should round up all of your key points, without being repetitive. 

Be straight to the point, and keep it simple – you want to show why you would be an ideal student, and your personal statement demonstrates your communication skills. 

Proofread your work carefully, and even if you’re confident, ask someone to check it for you.

How can i write a good postgraduate personal statement.

Your personal statement is an important piece of writing. Doing a good job on it is the difference between getting onto the course you want or an alternative, so these are our recommendations: 

  • Take your time to read the guidance provided 
  • Plan your statement, so that you don’t forget to include anything 
  • Leave enough time to edit and write several drafts 
  • Use plain English (unless the guidance requires another language as part of the application process) 
  • Proofread your work carefully, and even if you’re confident, ask someone to check it for you. As a bare minimum use an online tool such as Grammarly to pick up any typos! 
  • Be enthusiastic – your statement should show you are excited about the prospect of studying the course
  • Use a customised statement for each application – don’t just cut and paste from a generic application! 

Remember, you are looking to impress the admissions team with your personal statement – so write it accordingly. 

What do admissions teams look for in a postgraduate personal statement?

It depends on which course you are looking to study, but there are several things that admissions staff will look for in every personal statement. 

  • A well thought out, clear and easy to read statement that demonstrates your skills 
  • Evidence of how the course you are applying for is the best step on your career path
  • That you have looked at other options and why the institution that you are applying to is the right choice 
  • Why both your academic and non-academic abilities support your desire to complete the course
  • That you have a suitable amount of interest in the subject

There are many different ways to show these points, and so if your personal statement looks very different from others, but still answers these points and the requirements of the institution, then don’t worry! That is likely to be a good thing as it means your personal statement will be more memorable. 

Writing your postgraduate personal statement is something that you need to take your time to get right. Rushing, or using a template is a no-no – you need to fully personalise your statement to demonstrate why you are a good fit. Your personal statement is a lengthy and crucial step in your postgraduate application process

Preparation

Applying for postgraduate courses, whether masters, PhD, or professional courses, especially those required for teacher training, journalism, law and psychology conversion, can be competitive.

Your personal statement needs to be well written, relevant and give clear reasons for wanting to apply, in addition to what you can bring to the course and how you plan to use it in the future. Some institutions will tell you exactly what it should cover, others will leave it to you to decide what to include.

Research your course options thoroughly, websites such as findamasters.com , findaphd.com , jobs.ac.uk/phd and ucas.com can help, with sites like lawcareers.net , British Psychological Society ( bps.org.uk ) and National Council for the Training of Journalists ( nctj.com ) providing details of programmes.  Some courses may be available on a part-time or distance learning basis as well as full-time and in person.

Applications are usually made directly to institutions for masters and PhD programmes and many advertised programmes include the contact details of the Programme Leader or Supervisor, so making contact can demonstrate interest and you can refer to any contact you made in your personal statement. Try to visit an open day if possible, to meet staff and students and explore facilities, or at least interact online.

Check the course start date, some programmes may have a January/February start date in addition to the usual autumn one. Carefully check the application closing date. Demonstrate how you meet the entry requirements and link any relevant transferable skills, work experience, research, projects, and modules.

Presenting your personal statement

  • The personal statement should be around one side of A4 in length, unless otherwise specified – always check if there is a word count limit and if so, stick to it.  For your first draft, don’t worry about the word length, just write it, and then edit it down.
  • Write in paragraphs with a minimum font size of 11, breaking it into paragraphs to avoid solid text.
  • If you are applying to several postgraduate courses, then you will need to tailor your statement for each one. Each application must be relevant for every individual course and institution,  so if you are using text generative AI to help you draft an initial response make sure that you are changing the information you are uploading so that it’s relevant to each institution/course. And always improve the responses that text generative AI gives, as they won’t be good enough for a successful application .
  • What to include (unless otherwise specified)

Your motivations:

This is a paragraph describing the reasons why you want to study further. When explaining your motivations try not to describe your life story (all too often people start by saying “From an early age I’ve always...”). Clearly show why the subject is of interest to you, for example:

  • Do you want to study aspects of what you have been learning at undergraduate level in more depth because you enjoy the subject?  Has a life experience sparked the interest in new, or deeper, understanding?
  • Do you need to learn a new skill or subject for your career, either because you are pivoting to a new path, or higher education qualifications are a requirement?

Why this subject, course and institution:

Here you need to describe your motivations for wanting to do this specific subject and course. You can talk about the course topics/modules that you are particularly keen to study. Are there any aspects of this course which are unique, and not offered elsewhere?

Acknowledge any specialisms or awards the university or department may have, including naming academics you are eager to learn from, and relevant reading and research you have completed. If you’ve been to visit and you loved the facilities or campus, mention that too.

What you can bring to the course:

What they are checking is that you can cope with the academic rigours of the course and will successfully complete it. Highlight your academic achievements, knowledge, research, and projects.

Go into detail about how you achieved your qualifications and how you meet or exceed the entry requirements. Include the skills you developed, such as being focused, meeting deadlines, critical analysis, and discussions, sharing and receiving feedback, time management, communication, and giving presentations.

What makes you a good student and effective learner? Include the academic skills you have developed though individual projects and group work, where you might have worked in diverse and international teams, conducted research using different sources, referencing skills, creating posters, attending conferences and any software, databases, and IT skills.

Career aspirations:

What career plans do you have and how will this course help you to achieve them? Don’t worry if you change your mind later if you just have one or two that you are considering at the time of application. You may be considering several possibilities and the course will help you to clarify which route is best for you. It’s important to give some indication that you have considered what you will do once you’ve completed the course. Whatever it is, explain this as clearly as possible.

Work experience:

Through full or part-time work experience, or the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme, you may have gained some useful experience which is directly related to the course you are applying for, if so, make sure to highlight this. If your experience isn’t relevant, you can still highlight the transferable skills you have developed, which will help in planning and organising your academic work.

Voluntary work/extra-curricular activities/positions of responsibility:

Include any extra-curricular experience, such as being a member of a club or society, having a position of responsibility such as a course representative, ambassador or mentor, any achievements or taking part in voluntary work and how you plan to get involved at your new institution.

A personal statement may be read before the rest of your form, so don't assume the reader has prior knowledge of your qualifications, skills, and experience. Ensure the information you provide compliments what you have written elsewhere on the form.

For some people the UCAS personal statement can cause fear and anxiety.

Creating and writing the perfect personal statement is a task that requires time, thought and creativity.

A Personal Statement provides admission officers in your chosen universities the opportunity to filter the talented students from the large pool of applications.

A Personal Statement is your chance to shine, it’s your only opportunity in the UCAS application to demonstrate your personality, academic intelligence and most importantly who you are and why you want to study at your chosen universities.

Follow our tips below to make sure that you nail and make a success of your personal statement!

1. Technical information

UCAS have specific requirements that you can’t forget nor ignore when writing your personal statement. You can’t exceed 4,000 characters, or 47 lines of text (including blank lines and spaces). If you go over the stated amount, the universities won’t receive your entire statement. To make sure that you’re tracking the total amount of characters or lines (whichever comes first) use Word (or an equivalent tool) to track how much you have written.

2. Plan your time and write it in advance!

It would be foolish and to your detriment if you leave your personal statement to the very last minute. The average student will go through 8 drafts of a personal statement before sending it off, make sure that you leave enough time to plan and write and most importantly having somebody in your school, college or somebody who you can trust to read through your personal statement. We recommend that you start thinking about your personal statement in July (before your break up for the summer holidays) and then writing it in September. The more time you allow yourself, the longer you can take to edit and perfect your application.

3. Make sure that you know which universities you're applying to before starting

The academic level of every university and courses across the UK varies, therefore make sure you know where and what you’re applying for before starting your personal statement. Knowing what course/ universities you’re applying to will help you cater your personal statement appropriately. Rule of thumb, the more traditional and academically acclaimed the university is, the less time and space you should dedicate in your personal statement discussing non-academic activities.

4. Find out what admissions tutors are looking for

The best way to impress the reader of your personal statement is to find out exactly what they are looking for in a candidate. Find out what our admissions tutors in your academic area are seeking when reading your personal statement. We also recommend speaking to our admissions team and representatives of your chosen departments during our Open Days about the UCAS personal statement.

5. Show that you're interested and want to study the course!

Admissions tutors will discover immediately whether you have a genuine desire to study the course at your chosen university.  You need to convey sincerity and enthusiasm as to why you want to study a particular course in a particular university. Avoid wasting lines on waffle but focus on why the three or four years of that course will be of benefit to you.

6. Choose your extra-curricular activities wisely!

The golden rule when discussing extra-curricular activities is to only mention the activity if it’s relevant to your course, e.g. if you’re applying for Law degree you might want to mention discuss your contribution to the debating society in your school/ college. For traditional subject, this might be tricky, but think outside of the box and if in doubt ask your teacher, mentor or advisor for assistance on this. Here are some ideas that we have thought about; a mathematics applicant could share enthusiasm for chess, a geographer might want to discuss the physical/ human geography of their local area or somewhere they have visited.  Read some of the tips shared by our admissions tutor .

7. Avoid rambling, waffling and long winded statements

Remember you only have 4,000 characters and 47 lines (whichever comes first), don’t swallow a thesaurus and don’t spend line after line talking about one thing! If something is interesting, provide the reader a brief overview, this will leave them wanting to know more! Avoid clichés e.g. “committed, passionate and hard-working” will not give the university an overview of who you’re and why you want to study their course.

8. Don't lie!

We all know that it’s immorally incorrect to lie, but if you’re caught your application could be reconsidered. Don’t become another case study of a university interview that goes wrong! Many applicants have been interrogated about something that they’ve included in the personal statement.

9. Don't copy!

Reading previous personal statements gives you an idea of the standard that is required but don’t try and re-use what has already been written. Copying will not demonstrate your uniqueness and self-drive. UCAS also use programmes to prevent plagiarism. Remember your personal statement needs to be your own!

A personal statement is a short, reflective piece of writing that you submit as part of your UCAS application to universities. We use it during the admissions process to decide if you’re suitable for the course you’re applying for – and so we can understand why you want to study your chosen subject.

A good personal statement can mean the difference between receiving an offer and being unsuccessful, so it’s important you take the time to consider what you want to include in it.

Your personal statement is where you highlight you have what it takes to study on one of our undergraduate courses.

The personal statement is one of the most important parts of your UCAS application and gives you the chance to tell us how you stand out from other candidates.

For some of our courses you may be invited for interview, but for the majority the personal statement is the only opportunity that you will have to sell yourself.

Plan your personal statement

You can only submit one personal statement for the five courses and universities you apply for, so it is a good idea to plan out what you want to say before writing your personal statement.

There is no one-size fits all method when you are writing your personal statement, so try to be original and engaging.

We are looking for evidence of your interest in, enthusiasm for, and understanding of your chosen course.

Think about:

  • why you are interested in the subject
  • your ambitions and how taking the course will help you achieve them
  • why you are interested in progressing on to higher education.

It is also important to tell us about:

  • your reasons for choosing the course (this is the most important part of the statement)
  • your skills (and their relevance to your chosen subject)
  • wider reading you’ve undertaken
  • work experience (especially where this is relevant to the subject)
  • any achievements or prizes you have won during your study or work
  • your wider interests and hobbies (providing they are relevant)
  • any career plans you might have.

You may want to apply for a variety of different courses – if this is the case, write about common themes relevant to all courses.

If you are a mature student you can use your personal statement to talk about your wider experience and the skills and knowledge you have gained; as well as why you are now thinking about returning to education.

Be sure to include any personal circumstances that may have affected your education. For example, a physical or mental health condition, caring for a family member or changing schools due to being from an Armed Forces family. You can also let us know about any financial hardships you may have experienced during your studies.

Structure your personal statement

Use a clear structure in your personal statement and make sure each paragraph logically follows on from the one before. You are limited to 4,000 characters (and 47 lines).

Start and end your personal statement by highlighting your positivity and passion for the course and your future career options (if you have any at this stage).

When writing your personal statement, you should:

  • be honest and write in your own words – the best statements are always the most genuine
  • use clear language and avoid extravagant claims
  • be analytical rather than just descriptive – don’t just tell us what you’ve read or what you’ve done, we want to see what you gained from this, or how it changed your perception of your chosen subject
  • explain your motivations in choosing the degree you’re applying for and demonstrate your existing passion for the subject (whether that’s from studies you’ve already undertaken in school or college or wider reading you’ve pursued)
  • where you are applying to courses linked to a particular profession (such as Teaching or Social Work), also reflect on your understanding of that vocation. For example, this may be reflections on what you gained from relevant work experience or it could be other research you’ve undertaken which has given you an insight into that profession
  • draw on your other experiences – for example, are you a member of a society, have you won any awards, scholarships or prizes?
  • provide evidence of your transferable skills, including research, critical thinking, communication, organisation, planning and time-management
  • highlight any career aspirations you might have and show how the course will help you achieve them
  • use accurate grammar, punctuation and spelling
  • proofread your statement and ask a friend or relative to read it.

Make sure you allow enough time to plan and structure your personal statement, ensuring you include everything you want to say. You may need to redraft your statement a number of times.

If you are invited to interview, go back to your statement so that you can familiarise yourself with the information you have given us.

It’s likely that writing a personal statement will be a new experience – we share our advice on what we look for.

What is a personal statement?

When I read your personal statement, the first thing I look for is enthusiasm about the subject. Your statement should paint a picture of why you want to study your degree. If you know what you want to do after the course, that is great but it is not essential.

Your outside interests and work experience can show more about you – which topics have already engaged you and which books have you read? Have you been a trusted person at work? Have you volunteered to help others learn at school? Have you trained people in a sport? Any of these things makes you a stronger applicant.

You can only write 47 lines and a maximum of 4,000 characters

The form does not have spell check, remember to be honest, map out your ideas, 75% of your statement should cover your academic strengths, motivation and interests, the remaining 25% should cover skills not directly related to your course .

Your personal statement checklist

J Look at course descriptions and identify the qualities, skills and experience required – you can use these to help you decide what to write about.

J Tell the reader why you’re applying – include your ambitions, as well as what interests you about the subject, the course provider and higher education.

J Think about what makes you suitable – this could be relevant experience, skills or achievements you’ve gained from education, work or other activities.

J Include any clubs or societies you belong to – sporting, creative, or musical.

J Mention any relevant employment experience or volunteering you’ve done.

J If you’ve developed skills through the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, ASDAN, National Citizen Service, the CREST Awards or Young Enterprise, include them in your statement.

J If you took part in a higher education taster course, placement, summer school or something similar, include it.

How to strengthen your personal statement

To strengthen your university application, consider the following advice about writing your personal statement.

Personal statement is the section on your UCAS application that universities use to check that the course you have applied for is right for you.

To help you stand out, our Head of Admissions has shared these 10 personal statement top tips:

  • Interest in a particular course; Explain why you are interested in a particular course and describe what you have done to go beyond just taking an interest in the subject area. Try to support what you say with evidence and avoid sweeping statements such as 'I have always had an interest in physics', without anything to back them up.
  • Experience; Detail any relevant work experience and the skills you have acquired.
  • Extended project work experience ; If you are doing an extended project qualification (EPQ), mention your research and explain how it is helping you prepare for studying at Southampton.
  • Career aspirations ; Show commitment to your chosen subject area by writing about your career aspirations related to the course you want to study.
  • Hobbies and interests ; Include details about your hobbies and interests, especially if you are in a position of responsibility or they relate to your chosen degree course. Don't just give a list, consider choosing two or three interests to talk about in detail. You should also talk briefly about the skills you have gained from these activities.
  • University expectations ; What do you hope to get from university? Mention any societies or activities you plan to become involved in. Include areas you are active in now and any that would be completely new to you.
  • Be truthful ; Never lie in your personal statement. Just be you, let your potential show.
  • Strong conclusion ; Try to finish your personal statement with a strong concluding paragraph. You could sum up the type of person you are.
  • Save your work ; The UCAS apply website times out after an hour, so it may be easier to write your personal statement in a word processer, then cut, and paste it into your application. Remember to 'save' your work regularly.
  • Check and check again ; Take your time to proofread your personal statement and make sure your application is completed and accurate. Get at least one person, or ideally several people, to check your personal statement for spelling and grammar mistakes.
