Positive and Negative Impacts of Tourism in Paris

We know that tourism has many positive and negative impacts, but what about its impact on the capital? In this article, we will see the impacts of tourism on Paris in detail.

Positive impacts

Economic growth.

You cannot deny that tourism is a considerable source of income for the country, especially knowing that France is the leading tourist destination in the world , this means that it welcomes the most tourists in the world yearly.

In 2018, nearly 89.3 million international tourists traveled to France, including 50 million to the Île-de-France region, according to the Île-de-France regional tourism committee (link in French).

In its dashboard on the French economy , the INSEE states that in 2018, the domestic tourism expenditure reached 153.3 billion euros. It means that tourists spent a total of 153.3 billion euros during their stay in France, the two main expenditures being accommodation and transports.

Tourism is a major source of income for restaurants and cafés (around 17 billion euros in 2018) as well as for museums and other charged landmarks .

Tourism keeps the economy going and contributes to the wealth of the country .

Creation of jobs

Tourism develops many jobs in different areas: in souvenir shops, department stores, airports, restaurants, bars, museums, landmarks, travel agencies, hotels, etc. According to the Banque des Territoires (link in French), part of the Caisse des dépôts , a French public financial institution, there are 2.87 million jobs linked to tourism.

The creation of jobs benefits the inhabitants of the capital itself, who can find one more easily.

Decrease of the unemployment rate

The creation of jobs directly contributes to the decrease of the unemployment rate of the inhabitants, even though these jobs are not always long-termed (many are seasonal and anyone can apply).

Sharing French culture abroad

The arrival of international tourists allows French cultural, historical and artistic heritage to be shared worldwide.

French culture is already well known in the world: many people know Paris, the famous Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Champs-Elysées, the Louvre and its Mona Lisa, baguettes, French cheese and wines, the beret and the striped sweater, luxury boutiques such as Chanel and great fashion designers like Jean-Paul Gaulthier some might even know the French Revolution.

Tourism contributes to the image that tourists have of France.

In favor of intercultural exchanges

Traveling is an enriching experience for an individual and it allows to bring together different cultures and world views.

When tourists and inhabitants meet, it leads to interesting conversations for both sides.

It is a great opportunity to step out of one’s comfort zone and to discover that our view of the world is not necessarily the general convention.

Negative impacts

Tourism is bad for the environment: according to the Ministry of Ecological Transition (in French), it is responsible for 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

In France, tourism caused the emission of 118 million tonnes of CO2 in 2018, according to a study by ADEME (in French), the French Environment and Energy Management Agency. These GHG emissions correspond to those of 11 million French people over a whole year.

These emissions are mainly due to transport and accommodation, but also to other tourism activities such as restaurants and shopping. Tourists account for 80% of transport-related GHG emissions (mainly air transport).

Such air pollution greatly contributes to global warming and changes the quality of the air.

We do not recommend you to eat or walk around outside during pollution peaks (difficult for tourists as they often visit on foot and eat in outside seating areas). You can always keep an eye on the air quality of the capital on this website (in French).

The weather also contributes to the dispersion of polluting particles (especially wind and rain, which are frequent in Paris).

Overpopulation

According to the INSEE (in French), in 2018, Paris, a small city of 105 km2, has 2,175,601 inhabitants, meaning 20,754 inhabitants per km2 , which is much more than in New York for example, with its 7,101 inhabitants per km2.



Paris is a small, highly populated city , we can even say overpopulated. The arrival of tourists contributes to it. Even if they don’t stay for long, they need accommodation which could have been for Parisians. Tourists also contribute to the saturation of transport networks and streets.

Underprivileged inhabitants

Parisians are the ones who suffer most from tourism. In addition to the overcrowding effect mentioned previously and the noise pollution that it can cause, the local population sees less and less other locals: many accommodations are transformed into Airbnbs for tourists or hotels and hostels .

These accommodations, which are specially designed to host foreigners, are contributing to the rise in rental prices and land purchases . The cost of living is also rising , gradually forcing the inhabitants to move to the more financially accessible but less secure and crowded Parisian suburbs .

The progressive departure of the inhabitants leads to the arrival of a more affluent social class in the areas and many homes are becoming secondary residences , rendering certain arrondissements ghostly.

The jobs created by the tourist demand are not necessarily for the inhabitants , especially as many are seasonal or for students.

Inhabitants end up missing social contact with other inhabitants in favor of foreign contacts, which can frighten them and make them question their own identity.

The social impact of tourism is so great that people can feel oppressed by so many strangers in their daily lives.

The French capital city, Paris, by the river Seine, is one of the most seductive and celebrated cities in the world. With beauty and romance in each and every part of it, it is not an exaggeration to tell that it is the most beautiful city in the world. The landmarks of Paris, like the celebrated Eiffel tower and the Louvre Museum, are more familiar than any other in the world. Like all great cities, Paris is rich and populous. Unlike other great cities, Paris is always alive and pulsating. This vibrant city is a kaleidoscope of art, literature, film, architecture, and whatnot. Paris is portrayed as the city of lights (“La Ville-Lumière”), the city of love, and the city of fashion, and is one of the richest cities in the world. No other city is so loved by its inhabitants. Anyone who has visited this charming city falls head over heels in love with it.

Paris is considered inhabited permanently from around 4200BC, the oldest known inhabitants being the Celtic tribes called Parisii. Paris was conquered by the Romans by BC52 and it expanded to become a prosperous city with palaces, temples, baths, theatres, and forums over the years. Paris was made the capital city first by King Clovis I. The Counts ruled Paris in the middle ages and saw the increasing prosperity of the city as a hub of commerce, trade, politics, and culture. Many famous architectural marvels like the cathedral of Notre Dame and the basilica at St. Denis were built during the middle ages. Paris was conquered by the British and lost its title as the capital but it regained the title when Charles VII reclaimed the city from the English after the Hundred Years’ War in 1436. Paris was the main center of the French Revolution in the late 1680s. It was Napoleon the Third who made the greatest transformation of the city to almost the way in which we see it now. Paris was occupied by the Russians and the Germans in its past. With the advent of industrialization, Paris grew to become the richest high–tech city in the world.

The very first impression about Paris is its noise. The busy streets with shouting street vendors, the untiring barking of dogs, the blaring automobile horns, and the constant motion of people make Paris look like a turmoil. But the beauty of the city is so overwhelming that the noise is often forgotten.

The design of the city is very unique and is quite unlike other major cities in the world. The center of the city is called intra-muros, a Latin term for ‘within the walls’, and is a small compact form of the big city. The city districts called arrondissements are arranged spirally around the center. There are almost twenty city districts around the city center. The districts are divided into quarters or neighborhoods. The city stands on a relatively plain flat land and hence the Eiffel Tower, the Centre Pompidou or the Telegraph metro station can give an excellent view of the whole city.

The city life of Paris is a celebration of festivals. It has a culture of art, music, films, museums, and theatres. It is one of the leading business and fashion centers in the world. A blend of both old and new architecture, parks and squares, the beautiful Seine River, and the beautiful Parisians make it a unique and fascinating place to visit or to live in. The spring season is the best to visit, especially in May – June. The city is also beautiful and easy to live in during the autumn. The beautifully landscaped parks and walkways make it a pedestrian-friendly city. The streets are lined with booksellers and street artists. The walk through the beautiful streets takes you along small and beautifully adorned shops, sidewalk cafes, art galleries, elegant restaurants, and hotels. Paris has a population of about 11.3 million which is about 19% of the population of France. Yet, it is one of the most preferred tourist destinations in Europe.

Some of the world’s renowned museums are located in Paris which includes the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay . An estimate says that there are almost 130 museums in Paris, which is an enormous number for a city. Louvre is the city’s most important attraction which houses masterpieces like the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo statue. Musée d’Orsay holds the paintings and arts of the impressionist period including the famous The Lady and the Unicorn . Musee Picasso and Musee Rodin are exclusive museums for the works of Pablo Picasso and Auguste Rodin respectively. The third-largest museum, the Musee du quai branly was opened in June 2006 and encases arts and artifacts from Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

The Opera Garnier is the largest opera in Paris and showcases classic ballets and operas. The modern Opera Bastiile has ballets and operas with a mix of classic and modern forms. Theatres and Operas have always been an indispensable part of French culture, especially in Paris.

Paris has a mix of Roman, Gothic, and French architectural styles. The most famous piece of Parisian architecture is perhaps the Eiffel Tower. The Basilique de St. Denise is a classic example of French gothic architecture. The Notre Dame de Paris and the Basilique du Sacre-Coeur are the cathedrals in the city. The Place de la Concorde and the Place de la Bastille are architectural marvels and hold a significant positions in French history.

Paris also has a huge number of exquisite hotels, beautiful French houses with narrow streets, and a balanced mix of modern and ancient architecture.

Paris has a mixture of cultures because of its large immigrant population and this has been the base of its diverse culinary skills. French cuisine is rich in fresh ingredients and a wide variety of flavors. Parisians have perhaps the most refined and complex cooking procedures which make the most delicious food on the planet. Paris has got a large number of small and large elegant restaurants which cater to the tastes of almost everyone. The Parisians have an artistic style in serving their meals and the food is something to be savored. Fresh baked bread and cheese are part of a Parisian’s daily diet. Paris serves nearly five hundred varieties of cheese made from goat, ewe, or cow milk. Each region in Paris has its own specialty. The entire city is lighted up in the night which renders the most breathtaking sight from the top of the Eiffel tower. The city is rightly called the city of lights with its mind-blowingmind blowing beauty in the night. Paris has been a favorite destination for tourists, students, and businessmen right from the eleventh century. The presence of the world’s most famous landmarks has made Paris a dream destination for many. Paris is also the economical capital of France. As an old French saying says, when Paris sneezes, France catches a cold.

Paris is the most romantic city in the world. Dining in Paris is the most fashionable in the world, and if you want to impress your date, here is the place to be. If you want to propose marriage to your loved one, there may be no better place than Paris. As you go around the city, you will observe that Parisians value all aspects of fashion. It’s not simply the way Parisians dress; it’s also the way they carry themselves.

Individuality is highly valued in France, and nowhere is this more evident than on the streets of Paris. So, when you begin organizing your trip to France, it is inevitable that you will want to see some beautiful sights or participate in some exciting activities. Paris is the only place where you can have such enjoyable experiences. There are many distinct landmarks and monuments to see, making it difficult to decide which to visit. Paris also has a plethora of unique and exciting sites that will keep visitors enthralled for the duration of their stay.

History of Paris

In 51 BC, Julius Caesar defeated the Celtic “Parisii” tribe. The Romans referred to the area as Lutetia of the Parisii, or “Lutetia Parisiorum.” In 212 AD, the city was renamed “Paris.”

As the Roman Empire began to disintegrate in the West, a Germanic tribe known as the Franks pushed in, conquering it in 464. Clovis I, their king, made it his capital in 506. Although Charlemagne moved his capital to Aachen, Germany, Paris remained an important city that was attacked twice by Vikings. When Hugh Capet was crowned King of France in 987, he made Paris his capital once more. For a long time, the kings only had power over Paris and the surrounding area, with the rest of France in the hands of barons or the English. From 1420 to 1437, the English ruled over Paris during the Hundred Years’ War.

During the Protestant Reformation, the massive killing of French Protestants termed the Saint Bartholomew Day Massacre began there in 1572. The majority of the artwork of the Musée D’Orsay was created between 1848 and 1915. This is more recent than the art in the Louvre.

• The Moulin Rouge is a cabaret with many shows, and it opened in 1889. It is in Montmartre — a part of Paris with exciting nightlife. The French cancan is a well-known dance performed by women at the Moulin Rouge.

• The Champs-Élysées is perhaps Paris’s most famous street and one of the world’s most famous. It is teeming with shops and restaurants. The Arc de Triomphe is located at the far end of the Champs-Élysées.

While most modern cities have ditched paper for sleek digital systems, Paris clings to these cardboard relics, especially for one-off journeys. And if you find yourself with one during your trip, don't think about tossing it right away, unless you're eager to donate to the French government via a hefty fine.

The billets have been around since the 1900s, dating back to the launch of Paris' metro system. They've become a charming keepsake of sorts, a little souvenir of the City of Love. But despite their vintage appeal, these little paper tickets can cause you a lot of trouble if you're caught without one during a random inspection. If luck isn't on your side and you can't produce your used ticket, be prepared to cough up a fine. It could set you back as little as €35 (roughly $39), but in the worst-case scenario, you might find yourself slapped with a €180 penalty (around $201). So much for that fancy Parisian food tour you've been dreaming about!

You might be fined for throwing away your ticket

You might think your single-use paper ticket for the Paris Metro is pointless once you've made it through the gates, but don't be too quick to toss it — inspectors are lurking, ready to pounce with a fine if you can't produce that flimsy piece of cardboard. The internet is full of tales from unlucky tourists who learned this lesson the hard way, finding themselves out of pocket because they didn't think twice before trashing their tickets.

In a piece for the Gotham Gazette , journalist Carol Kellermann recounted how she had to fork over €35 ($39) for not being able to show her ticket — after the fine had already been "settled" (read: reduced). Over on Reddit, one user griped about being fined €40 ($44), while another got hit with a €50 ($55) fine despite offering to fish their ticket out of a garbage can. And it can get worse. According to the official RATP website , the fine for not being able to show a valid ticket can soar up to €180 ($201) if you stall on your payment. The site, too, makes it crystal clear that passengers must keep their tickets with them throughout the trip. "Please keep your ticket until you leave the station, as ticket inspectors can ask to check it at any time," it reads .

So why do so many tourists fall into this trap? It might be because there are no giant signs explicitly telling you to hang onto your ticket. But as one TripAdvisor user pointed out, "They don't announce it because it is truly just typical of transport in Europe — you have to have a validated ticket and spot checks are how they enforce it."

Paper tickets are going away soon

Here's another reason to hold onto those Paris Metro paper tickets: they're on the brink of extinction — at least in the city itself. In 2022, Ile-de-France Mobilités, the folks behind the Paris ticketing system, announced they were phasing out carnets (those handy packs of 10 billets) to push people towards digital options. Some turnstiles have already stopped accepting paper tickets, marking the beginning of the end for these legendary little slips. This transition has been in the works for a while, but progress hit a few speed bumps due to the pandemic and the microchip shortage.

"We were in a hurry, but the chip crisis slowed us down," Laurent Probst, director-general at Ile-de-France Mobilites explained to AFP at the time (via France24 ), adding that they were optimistic that the switch to smartcards and digital tickets on smartphones will catch on quickly. "I'm enthusiastic about this development. This is a sea change in the quality of our customer service." The replacement? The Navigo Easy plastic card, which debuted in 2019. It's a reloadable option that you can top up at ticket machines, offices, or even via smartphone.

But before you start bidding farewell to the famed paper tickets, know this: they're not disappearing entirely — at least not yet. RATP noted in 2023 that it had no plans to "completely eliminate" paper tickets for single journeys or trips to the suburbs. And if you happen to have a stash of tickets bought before 2022, you can still use them. According to The Guardian , though, paper tickets will only be valid in the Paris Metro until 2025. So, if you're feeling nostalgic, you better hold on to those little souvenirs — they're on borrowed time.

They have built an EU tunnel connecting UK to France. People in UK now prefer to go for vacations to Paris and other cities around France since it is the closest country and is one of the best destinations for a holiday. Travel costs have decreased a great deal and more routes and options are available for people around the world to fly into this city. Tourist services have improved drastically. The government of France is taking major steps to boost tourism.

They are building new airports, highways and subways to make it easier for tourists to travel. Huge interest is being taken into the preservation of tourist spots and sites. Most families now a days have two earners which adds to the disposable income.

Families now usually have one child instead of two and would often want to travel because the economic burden of raising two children is not there. People are retiring earlier, giving them more time to travel. There are people who save money all their lives just to travel around the world after they retire. Even after they retire they are given pensions and other grants. 3. Economic Reasons – In general, people are much wealthier now that they have been in the past. This means they have more disposable income to spend on luxuries such as holidays. Salaries of people all over the world has become very high. 4. Media – There has been much more advertising of holiday destinations in recent years. This is sometimes direct (e.g. on websites, brochures) and sometimes indirect (e.g. holiday programs on the TV; showing destinations in films or on TV programs encourages people to visit them). Travel companies have started to advertise the various tours they are offering. One such example is THOMAS COOK. We daily see advertisements from their company trying to promote various offers they are providing for tours to various countries all around the world.

In 2007 was 70.4million and in 2008 was 70.5million. This statistic shows us that Paris has now reached a stage where there is minimal increase in the number of tourists that visit each and every year. Positive Effects of Tourism on Paris 1. It has created job opportunities for the local people. It helps decrease the unemployment rate and increase local income. You might assume hosting the Olympics is great for a city's economy thanks to an influx of visitors staying in hotels, dining out, and enjoying the sights.

But the financial benefits of hosting the Olympics aren't so clear. The Games can end up costing a host country billions of dollars and can leave behind structures that sit empty for years .

Ahead of this year's Olympics, Paris tried to mitigate losses by relying on existing venues and making detailed plans for the future of other structures, including the Olympic Village .

But it was unclear how many visitors would pay to travel to Paris during the Games. Several airlines said they anticipated a loss in revenue as fewer people appeared to be interested in traveling to Paris than in previous summers.

"Unless you're going to the Olympics, people aren't going to Paris," Delta CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC in July . He estimated the airline would lose up to $100 million because of the Olympics.

But as the Games got underway and spectators poured into the stadiums and streets, it became clear that Paris was still bustling — though with sports fans rather than shoppers.

A Forbes report said the French newspaper Le Monde estimated that 1.3 million people visited at least one so-called fan zone, or area for watching sports, in Paris during the Olympics. France's tourism minister, Olivia Grégoire, told the French paper La Tribune Dimanche, per Reuters , that museum attendance was up by 25% compared with the same period in 2023 and that the number of hotel guests increased by 16%.

Visa, the Olympics' payment partner, reported a 42% increase in customers in Paris during the first week of the Games compared with the same week last summer.

Overall, the Paris tourism office estimated 11 million people visited the city during the Olympics, down from its initial estimate of 15 million. Still, 11 million was a 4% increase from 2023's visitor numbers for the same period, it said.

It remains to be seen whether visitor rates will stay consistent for the Paralympics, which kicked off in Paris this week. But as evidenced by other host cities , Paris is likely to feel the effects of these games for years to come.

Some shopkeepers weren't too pleased.

"In July, it felt like August, and in August, it felt like COVID," one told Le Monde, alluding to the annual exodus of Parisians going on vacation . Many shops, bakeries, and markets shut down for the month and reopen in September.

Ahead of the opening ceremony on July 26, train stations were in chaos after a coordinated attack on multiple lines. People were stranded for hours.

The night before the opening ceremony, the French railway system was the victim of what France's train operator, the SNCF, described as "malicious acts."

Three major lines were targeted in arson attacks, affecting an estimated 800,000 travelers over the weekend.

The opening ceremony took place almost entirely along the Seine, drawing crowds to its banks.

An estimated 300,000 people crowded together to watch teams float by. French officials said an earlier cap of about 600,000 people was cut in half to ensure spectators' safety.

NBCUniversal said nearly 29 million people watched on TV, the highest viewership since the 2012 Olympics in London.

The bleachers were filled with fans excited to see the performances.

Though it rained during the opening ceremony, that didn't deter the crowds.

Lady Gaga, Gojira, Celine Dion, Aya Nakamura, and Rim'K were among the musical acts.

Normally the park in front of the Eiffel Tower is open to anyone. During the Olympics, it was used for the opening ceremony.

The stage was designed to mirror the Eiffel Tower above it.

The landmark was still open to visitors during the Olympics, except for July 26, when the opening ceremony was held.

After the opening ceremony, Eiffel Tower Stadium became a sports venue.

The temporary venue, which can hold almost 13,000 people, hosted beach volleyball at the Olympics and will host blind football during the Paralympics.

That's not the only role the Eiffel Tower played at this year's Olympics. The middle of each medal has a piece of metal from the structure.

People could gather and watch events at fan zones — the city said 150,000 spectators visited a fan zone during the first weekend alone.

"It's going well," Rachid Biad, a fan-zone coordinator, told Le Monde.

More than 20 fan zones were set up across the city. One at the foot of the Eiffel Tower — on the other side from the stadium — was expected to get 13,000 spectators a day.

But many of these fan zones were in public parks. To see the Tuileries Garden in all its beauty, visitors will have to come back after the Olympics.

Instead of a beautiful garden, visitors saw a sea of phones.

On days with biking races, getting around the streets of Paris was difficult.

Various roads zigzagging through the city were closed from three hours before a race to 15 minutes after the last competitor finished, making it more difficult than usual to sightsee.

Paris is a city of bridges — it has 37 — but many were temporarily closed during the Games, and people traveling around the city had to take detours.

The iconic rings were placed outside the Louvre's pyramid.

The museum, which remained open during the Olympics, was also a backdrop for the opening ceremony.

The Arc de Triomphe is now adorned with the Paralympic logo.

The Paralympics are underway until September 8.

The Paralympics have become more popular since their inception in 1960. This year's events are set to be the most watched, as more than 160 countries have confirmed broadcast agreements, the International Paralympic Committee said.

Organizers said on Wednesday that 2 million tickets had been sold for the Paralympics, with 500,000 tickets still available.
