Singing as a Hobby and Way of Self-Expression Essay

Among the hobbies I became interested in during my studies is singing. It is probably a rather specific hobby, but muttering songs under my nose or singing in the shower calms me down. It is a good way to relieve stress, mostly in solitude and without disturbing other people. In my video, I tried to reflect on the feelings that singing in the shower evokes in me.

I want to draw attention to the feeling of lightness and free my head from serious thoughts. I need to have a source of relaxation and nonchalance during my studies, and singing is great for letting me do my things without any tension. My hobby does not require any skills, just my desire. I suppose I may not be good at singing, and some notes may sound funny. I do not have a sense of deadlines, rush, or a desire to succeed and be the best, but I get satisfaction and feel comfortable.

Among the paintings that remind me of singing is The Scream . As far as I know, Edvard Munch painted it several times with different techniques (“The Scream”). I am struck by such zeal, and I realize that it is not achievable for me. I am not interested in achieving mastery in my singing and have not even thought about it. There are talented people besides me, and I do not want to get on the stage because I fear losing the pleasure of the hobby.

I would like to say that my hobby is simple, and I would never make it a professional career. I may not be motivated enough, but I do not want to have straight-A student syndrome or any anxiety that I am not good enough. I have learned from the Van Gogh example that there are more valuable things, and if a hobby comes at the expense of mental health, it is rational to give it up.

My Hobby Singing Essay in English Like any other young teenager, I also have hobbies and passions. My hobby is singing and thankfully I am very good at it.  Even my mother is a singer and this is why I have got the skills.  Since my childhood, I am dragged to music automatically and my mum says I love singing since I was in her belly.  She used to sing songs for me and she said I used to respond to her voice.

This s amazing and I know why I have so deep a connection with music because it is in my blood. I can listen to music for hours and even days. I have no particular choice in music, but everything is melodious to my ears. Since my childhood, I had many favorites and I used to listen to songs on repeat.

Even my parents and grandparents used to be mesmerized by looking at my passion for music. In my family everyone likes music and we all have favorites of our own.  My mom has many stories about me about my childhood and music.

I had so many instrumental toys and toys with music. Every toy I had was having some sort of music because these were the only toys that used to attract me. On my 3 rd birthday, I also got a karaoke so that I can practice my singing skills and that beautiful gift helped me realize more about my passion for singing.

As I grew older my passion began to rise and I decided to learn to sing professionally so that one day I can become a professional singer. Since my childhood, I was always insisted to sing a song at birthday parties and other events.

In my school, I have participated in many singing competitions and even won some of them. I never feared the stage as it was thrilling for me. I always used to get so excited before my performances. The limelight you get on the stage is beyond anything.  I have a strong bond with music. I feel connected to everything that enters my ears.

I wanted to produce my own music one day and I wish to turn my hobby into a profession one day. I knew my journey of singing had started the day I was born. I have music in my nerves and mind.  I just get mesmerized with the tunes and music whenever I listen to any. 

Music is an emotion, a feeling that I live always to its fullest. I am very grateful to God that he made me so passionate about music. Music is relieving and like mediation to me. It gives me positivity and I feel very peaceful whenever I listen to music and sing.

I can sing many songs both from Hollywood as well as Bollywood. I am also practicing singing in other languages because I don’t want any barrier to stand in front of me when I am learning music. I love to sing songs in multiple languages such s hind, English, Marathi, and South Indian languages.

From the beginning, I knew what I had to become in the future and that was a popular singer. Musical instruments, my music collection, songs, and melodies are my life. Every day I wake up singing and even sing before I go to bed.

Singing is all that I have and I wish to be superb in this skill. Singing was my hobby till the age of 5, but after that, my hobby changed into my passion and then my career.  Every artist knows how important it is to brush their skills to be professional one day.

The beauty of this hobby of mine was I was god gifted and never had to put an extra effort into learning something new. I wanted to be best in the singing and I was totally dedicated to this hobby since I was a child. In my school days, I was a very popular artist in my school.

Everyone used to know that I am a great singer and no school function ever begin without my Vandana in the opening of the function.  I used to love performing on the stage and the excitement was the most thrilling I had to go through.

I participated in many singing competitions help inside and outside our school. From there I started gaining my singing skills. Till then I was not learning from anywhere, my mother used to teach me a few things about singing and that was all I needed to move ahead and fly.

My neighbors, my parents, friends, and teachers everyone appreciated my talent and always supported me to carry this hobby further. I always feel so lucky about myself and the people around me. Everyone supported me and used to gift me things that were related to singing. 

I can remember when I was14 my neighbor gifted me with audio of our great Indian singers and that was the best gift I ever had. It had 1000 songs from all the popular artists of India like Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Rafi, etc I was so inspired by that gift and started paying attention more to singing.

When I grew up I desired more exposure and wanted to participate in musical events and functions. I used to travel a lot and made many friends who were musical like me. The world is full of talent, I have many friends who sing so differently and have so much knowledge about music. I have friends from all around the world who belong to my music cult.

We have different native languages, but we still sing songs of other nationalities. Music has no language and now when I see people singing songs of different languages proved it. Singing gives a peaceful message and can make you filled with joy.

Anyone can lift up their bad moods by just listening to one beautiful song. I am so excited about music that I have sung many songs in many places and events, but even one request from others to sing a song makes me excited like a baby every time.

Hobbies are of different kinds and each person would be having different kind of hobbies. Singing, dancing, painting, photography, cooking, gardening and the list is just endless.

It basically depends on the interest of the person on what kind of hobby they possess. In my case, I would say that my hobby is Singing and I just love to sing at every possible chance that I could.

Why singing:

Right from my childhood, I used to love songs and I used to listen to many different kinds of songs. Then when I started picking up on the lyrics, my parents realized that I really had a passion for music. Music classes were searched and finally I was being put to one, under a well-trained teacher. From then on, I never looked back. I was taught from the basics to Carnatic, western, light music and so on. I just fell in love with music each time I learnt something new. The training did help me to get my vocals and modulations right and this enabled me to take part in various competitions that came up, during my childhood.

I have attended so many competitions and I was so glad that in a few of them I could win and beat my competitors while few others I could not and hence could learn my mistakes.

I started taking up singing seriously and with lots of encouragement and support from friends and family, I did make it to bigger heights. I had shows that I could perform and it was indeed a turning path for me at a young age.

Well, now I’m gonna talk about my free-time activity which is singing. I consider myself a person who has a talent for singing. I think this talent is passed on from my dad. In case you didn’t know, he used to be a singer at several coffee shops around the town and he made a good living just by performing in such places.

There are several benefits of singing. First of all, it helps people develop a sense of belonging and connection. My Special Hobby 

My favourite hobby is watching TV. Whenever I have free time, I love watching Television. It never obstructs my studies. Hobbies help us to expand our knowledge, and it teaches us several things. First, I like to finish all my school homework and then start watching TV. This lightens my mood and sparks up the excitement inside me, as it increases my curiosity about the world. It is a good habit because watching TV escorts a lot of knowledge in various fields. There are several channels on TV, which represent worldwide affairs. I watch the news and I like channels, such as animal planet, discovery channel or another informative channel. These channels increase my curiosity and encourage me to learn about different aspects of life.

I interestingly watch a cartoon network that provides me with creative and new ideas to make cartoons and arts. Some of my favourite comics are Mr Bean, Tom and Jerry, Scooby-Doo and many more. Many art-themed cartoons, like The Pink Panther and SpongeBob, inspire me to draw them. Primarily, the artworks of comics attract me and inspire me to decorate my scrapbooks with their figures. 

Parents Find Hobbies Useful

My parents praise my hobby, and they are also happy when they see me watching national and international news and several events on the TV. Moreover, they feel proud when they listen to the news update from me. 

Now, I study in class with two and eight years old girls. Creating jokes, sitting idle and spending time roaming around is unproductive, according to my parents. My parents made sure that I developed my hobbies from childhood. Therefore, they encouraged me to create some good habits. 

Watching TV in a proper way gives you so many important roles. It helps us to make something creative. It provides us with knowledge about different places, their cultures, climatic conditions and especially their history. Furthermore, it widens our imagination by showing imaginary characters from the marvellous Disney World and Jungle Book. 

Importance of Hobby

Getting the latest updates and gaining knowledge about today’s incident is so important. It provides us with a lot of benefits, which help us in developing our knowledge and thoughts. It also enhances our minds of thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Hobbies are all about interest and can only be done in our leisure time. These activities help us in keeping our mind and body in a relaxed and refreshed state.  

Moreover, hobbies also increase our productivity and improve our overall health. It protects us from the risk of dementia and also protects us from sadness in our life. It also helps in our overall development and ignites our hidden talents and passions. So it is essential to have hobbies in our lives.

Several Aspects of Watching TV as an Hobby

Watching TV is not only about fun and joy; it also introduces us to new characters and stories to analyse. Every show comes with a new set of characters and stories that tickles our brains. As a hobby, you can compare these different storylines and their characters with one another.

The science of singing: When speech and music combine

“If I cannot fly, let me sing.” So said the composer Stephen Sondheim, one of the most important figures in musical theatre in the last century. Most of us probably do not realise how big a part music, and singing, play in our everyday lives. From the latest hits on the morning radio to the songs a toddler learns at nursery, music is all around us.

Like speech, singing can be a way to communicate. Both speech and music can be described using four parameters: pitch (how high or low the note is), loudness, duration and timbre (the quality or tone of a sound; put simply, it is what makes one musical sound different from another). Speech and music use these parameters in different ways. In singing, the two are brought together. This may seem simple when we listen to music, but in fact, reaching an accommodation between speech and music is a complex human skill.

The songs of children Professor Jaan Ross, along with his colleagues at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and elsewhere, have carried out extensive research into the question of how speech and music come together in the art that is singing. In one study, Professor Ross looked at one of the earliest type of songs we all sing: improvisational songs. When a child makes up a song, it might sound simple to adult ears. However, these songs can be examined in intricate detail.

Reaching an accommodation between speech and music is a complex human skill.

Professor Ross and his colleagues collected improvisational songs from 43 children aged between two and eight years old. During the study, the children were asked to complete a number of tasks, including improvising an ending to a melody, and making up a new song based on a simple picture. The songs were assessed based on several accepted criteria for children’s songs in Western music: that the songs have a melody and a rhythm, and end on the tonic (a final resolution tone). Using the results, the researchers were able to group the songs into four types, based on whether the song was spontaneous or premeditated and whether it fitted with the criteria for Western music.

When asked to finish a melody, all but five of the children were able to complete the task. Most finished the melody using syllables (e.g. “la la la”), a few used elements from a song they already knew and one child invented new lyrics for the song. In comparison, when asked to make up a song based on a picture, only 30 children completed the task. Impressively, 20 children invented a new song with original lyrics and melody, while seven others sang a song they already knew that they linked to one of the pictures.

Professor Ross and his colleagues believe that the different success rates between the two tasks was due to the first task being simpler; on the other hand, the second required a series of steps (choose a picture, invent lyrics, invent melody). The children also showed a variety of different approaches to completing the song-inventing task. However, the results did clearly show that, by the age of four, most of the children in the study had not only picked up the rules for children’s songs in Western music, but could also apply those rules to create songs of their own.

Speech and music in Estonian songs As an almost universal form of human expression, singing can be an effective way to communicate emotion. But how is this achieved? In another study, Professor Ross measured syllable duration in the Estonian language. He compared syllable length in speech and in song. Syllable length, along with pitch, loudness and timbre, is known to contribute to the expressiveness of a song.

Professor Ross suspected that some of the variations in vocal performances depended on the language used. Estonian is an interesting language to use in this work because it has an unusual property: it uses temporal variation to change the grammar and meaning of words, similar to the way that pitch variation changes meaning in some languages (e.g. Chinese).

Professor Ross and his colleagues decided to look at several aspects of syllable length in song. As a part of this, they compared historical song recordings from 1916 with contemporary recordings. The historical recordings featured three singers preforming popular Estonian folk songs in Germany in the early twentieth century. To ensure the same songs were used in the contemporary recordings, the team gave volunteers the lyrics and melody from the 1916 recordings, and asked them to sing the songs.

It seems that the greater the deviation from the more rigid patterns of speech, the more expressive a song can be.

Professor Ross found that, as might be expected, long syllables had a greater duration than short syllables. However, this effect was far less noticeable in song, when compared to speech. It also appeared to vary from song to song. Interestingly, the song with the most emotionally-loaded lyrics differed most from the patterns seen in speech. It seems that the greater the deviation from the more rigid patterns of speech, the more expressive a song can be.

The songs of the Forest Nenets The Forest Nenets are an ethnic group of just 2,000 people who live in Northeast Europe and Western Siberia. The vocal music of the Forest Nenets has its own unique characteristics, and does not fit within the defined rules of Western music tradition.

In a third study, Professor Ross and Triinu Ojamaa asked several participants to identify the boundaries between successive melody lines in traditional Forest Nenets songs. Participants included a member of the Forest Nenets, an Estonian composer and an Estonian ethnomusicologist (someone who studies the music of different cultures). The aim was to see if the participants, with their very different backgrounds, completed the task in the same way. The researchers found that there were some similarities in the ways in which the participants approached the task. Both the Forest Nenets and the composer used the text to complete the task, rather than the melody. Interestingly, however, when attempting to segment the songs, the composer aimed for what he understood to be the “correct” form. Conversely, the Forest Nenets participant saw the purpose of the song as a story to be told to the audience. When asked if Forest Nenets singers ever made mistakes, he said, “How could you make mistakes when you know the content of the song; when you know what you wish to say?”

Professor Ross concluded that few of the rules of Western music seem to apply to the traditional vocal compositions of the Forest Nenets.

Singing unites speech and music The work of Professor Ross and his colleagues has illuminated a number of different facets of the relationship between speech and music, and how the two come together in the form of song. From songs created by young children to traditional music sustained by just a few thousand people, there are many diverse and fascinating ways to approach the question. In considering the results of the Forest Nenets study, Professor Ross noted that the Western rules of music are limited in scope. Stepping outside these rules, particularly when examining the music of other cultures, could offer a route to a better understanding of the links between speech, music and song.

I feel proud of myself and my friends also praise me because they feel that I become the life of the party. I play the guitar and sing when we go on a picnic or when I have a free period in school.

My hobby makes me happy and also brings joy to all my relatives and friends. It is necessary that everybody must have some hobby. It educates man, gives him pleasure, and helps him to utilize his free time fruitfully. If a person has no hobby, his spare time will turn him into a useless, irritated and restless person. “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. There is however a certain richness of colour in an oil painting. Water colours are quick to dry. I find the effect of water colours very soothing.

Abstracts are my favourite themes for painting. But there is meaning in the abstracts I make. They are not just a splash of colour. The abstracts I make are meaningful. I love to share the representations of my abstracts with those who ask to know it. When the meanings of abstracts are seen the paintings can be appreciated. Often the meanings of abstracts are not easy to decipher. But the coming together of colour and form in a painting is in itself beautiful.

I also like making portraits. I like to sit before a person and make their portrait. But this may not be possible always. I sketch portraits in black pen or in pencil. Portraits are interesting to make. I have made portraits of some celebrities and have had the opportunity to go and meet with them and have the portraits autographed by them. On a couple of occasions celebrities have wanted to have the picture with my signature. Such occasions humbled me.

Sometimes I make caricatures too. These are fun to make. They add a dash of humour to the portrait of a person. Subjects of my caricature drawings have never been offended by my work. They have liked my work and have praised it.

I find making drawings and paintings very rejuvenating. When I am lonely and bored my canvas and paper, tubes and bottles of colour and brushes give me wonderful company in a beautiful and colourful way.

My Hobby Paragraph 350 words

Singing classical Carnatic music is my hobby. Although I like to listen to all genres of music, I love to sing the classical Carnatic genre of music. I listen to Hindustani classical music, as also to English, Hindi and Tamil pop music. I enjoy the modern genres of music too like rap and disco.

But classical Carnatic music is what I find very soothing and creatively fulfilling both to listen and sing. I can choose the raga I wish to sing or listen according to my mood too. I began learning Carnatic music when I was seven years old. I began to enjoy the music very much. I would write the lyrics of the various music compositions in my note book and make sure I learnt the pronunciations of the words very well.

I have engaged in a great deal of practice of singing Carnatic music. Practice makes perfect is an axiom applicable in every field including singing. I generally spend two hours a day singing Carnatic music. It is a very refreshing activity for me. I enjoy pursuing my hobby. I need to keep my throat clear so that I can sing. I therefore avoid eating ice creams and drinking chilled or frozen beverages. I also gargle every morning so that my throat does not get sore.

I have also bought a taanpura that I play when I sing. It is a musical instrument that provides the tune and tone for the music that is sung. I have participated in music competitions at school and at other public events and functions, and have won awards too. I am grateful to my music teachers and parents who have supported me and encouraged me at all times. Singing classical Carnatic music is also a stress buster for me. After a singing session I find I can also do my studies better.

I now encourage others to learn our classical music forms. These are the traditional Indian classical music genres and should be saved from getting lost, as many modern genres of music are getting more listenership and encouragement from the audiences.

I enjoy pursuing my hobby of collecting stamps. The collecting and study of stamps is known as philately. It is often called the king of hobbies and the hobby of kings. I was five years old when I started collecting stamps. My parents and teachers encouraged me to pursue my hobby.

I not only enjoy collecting stamps but also studying about stamps in general and about particular stamps too. I have learnt a great deal because of collecting a large number of Indian and foreign stamps. It is good to start collecting the stamps of one’s country at first.

I have a number of pen friends. I have been able to collect most of my foreign stamps because of writing letters to and receiving letters from my pen friends. I like to share stamps of India with my pen friends, and enjoy receiving foreign stamps in return.

Postage stamps are issued by countries around the world. Stamps are brought out in a variety of sizes and shapes. Stamps may be square, rectangular, triangular or circular. Stamps are also very colourful.

There are a number of themes on which countries issue postage stamps. The themes on which the postal department of a country brings out stamps are related to the country’s politics and history; business and economy; geography and landscape; culture and heritage; science and technology; art and architecture; flora and fauna; as also international issues. Great personalities and important events and occasions on the national and international arenas are also featured on stamps.

There are also some very unique stamps that have been brought out. Stamps are generally printed on paper, but there are stamps made on other interesting materials too like silk cloth and cork. Likewise, there are also stamps with flavours such as the Swiss chocolate flavor on a Swiss stamp, and the jasmine and sandalwood fragrances on Indian stamps. There is also a CD ROM stamp!

I find philately an engaging hobby. I also participate in philatelic exhibitions. I find it very interesting to prepare philatelic exhibits for competitions. It takes time to prepare the exhibits, but the effort is very rewarding. I have also won awards in the competitions.

Philately is an exciting hobby. Although the internet and smart phones have revolutionized communication with their speed, ease and reliability, letters still retain their charm. Writing a letter, the good old fashioned way, is always a pleasure.

I love to draw since I was four years old. I used to scribble on the walls and make some easy caricatures using a pencil. I made cats, cartoons, flowers, etc. My mother realized that it is my hobby and she sent me to a drawing teacher to take drawing classes during summer vacations.

The health benefits of painting and drawing are endless. It is very clear that activities like drawing can cause an increase in emotional intelligence.
