DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY

  • Prospective Students

Application Process

The following information is from The Graduate School's web site.

  • The Graduate School accepts online applications only.
  • The fee (subject to change) is $95 for both domestic and international applicants, payable by credit card.
  • Eligible applicants have the option to request a waiver using an online form that appears as part of the online application submission process.
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended documenting all courses taken, whether or not within a degree program, grades received and degrees earned are to be uploaded to the on-line application.  Only applicants recommended for admission that decide to enroll are required to submit official transcripts as part of the enrollment process.
  • Two to three letters of recommendation submitted online. The Graduate School has a specific recommendation form as part of the online application and no mailed recommendation letters will be accepted. All letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online application.
  • Academic Statement -Write a statement that answers the following questions (1,000 words max):   What are your academic interests, and why do you wish to pursue graduate studies in this specific program? How has your academic and professional background prepared you for graduate study? (Please include any research, training, or educational experiences that align with the program you are applying to.) How will our program help you achieve your intellectual and professional goals? For research-focused programs, please make sure to address any scholarly questions you wish to explore in the program and name any specific faculty members in this program whose research interests align with your own.
  • Personal Statement - Write a statement that addresses the following prompt (500 words max): The Graduate School values diverse backgrounds, approaches, and perspectives, understanding them as essential ingredients for true academic excellence. As a Northwestern graduate student, how could you contribute to an intellectual community that prioritizes equity, inclusion, belonging, and cultural humility? Your answer may draw upon past or present experiences, whether in academic work, extracurricular or community activities, or everyday life.
  • GRE Test scores are optional for the 2025 Admission cycle. If you choose to share GRE test scores, scan and upload a copy of your scores.
  • For international applicants whose native language is not English, unofficial scores for either the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), MET or IELTS exam. Official results must be sent directly to Northwestern by the Educational Testing Service.

NOTE: Materials submitted in support of an application are not released for other purposes and cannot be returned to the applicant.

Online Application

The application form can be completed and submitted electronically to Northwestern once you have answered all the questions. You may require several sessions to complete this form. That is understandable and is allowed through our on-line application system.

Supplementary materials should be sent together by you to Northwestern in a single large Supplemental Information Packet well before the deadline. To ensure the full consideration of your application be sure to carefully follow the submission procedure detailed in the on-line application.

All applicants are required to pay an application fee. Applicants using the on-line application may pay the fee by credit card.

Your application will NOT be processed without payment of the fee. The fee cannot be waived or postponed, is not refundable and must accompany the supplementary materials.

Transcripts

Copies of unofficial transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended, including records from courses in any university-level institution attended abroad must be uploaded to the on-line application. This means that students working toward a master's degree at another institution should upload unofficial transcripts of all undergraduate work as well as unofficial transcripts of all graduate work completed at the time of submitting the on-line application. The transcripts should show all the courses you took, whether or not within a degree program, the grades received, and the degrees earned.

This information may be included on the final transcript or on the diploma. Final credentials must be submitted as soon as they become available. Registration may be delayed pending the receipt of official documents showing that the degree has been awarded and/or that all academic work undertaken before enrollment in The Graduate School has been completed in good standing and with acceptable grades.

Note to International Applicants

The academic records we refer to as transcripts should provide a listing, year-by-year, of all courses taken and the grade or marks received for each one. It is helpful to have the grading scale of the institution and the student's rank in class included when such information is available. Do not submit secondary school records. The Graduate School and the Department of Psychology have no use for them, and such transcripts will be discarded.

If your college or university will not mail original official academic documents to you, you may send exact copies that have been verified as "Certified True Copies" by the appropriate institutional official of each institution you have attended. Uncertified photocopies are not acceptable.

To be considered, all documents not in English must be accompanied by official English translations. These translations must bear an original ink signature and seal. Translations alone will not be accepted.

Letters of Recommendation

The Graduate School requires a minimum of two letters of recommendation from persons best able to assess your ability to do scholarly research required by graduate studies. All letters of recommendation must be submitted through the online application.

Academic & Personal Statements

Your statements  are an important part of your application. Program admissions committees consider them carefully in ranking applicants. Be as specific as possible about your research interests and qualifications. If you have particular reasons for choosing Northwestern, be sure to indicate them. Indicate any awards or honors you may have earned, publications you may have authored, or any pertinent research or work experience.

The Academic & Personal Statements should be uploaded into the online application prior to submission.

Certifying English Proficiency

Much of your success in graduate study will rely on your ability to understand, read, write and speak English. If your native language is not English, you must certify your proficiency in the English language in one of the following three ways:

  • Providing official scores for either the TOEFL, Michigan English Test or IELTS exam. Please see the TGS website for more information English Language proficiency tests.
  • Providing official transcripts verifying an undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent, where the language of instruction is English.
  • Providing official transcripts verifying a graduate degree from an accredited institution where the language of instruction is English.

Scores must be no older than two years from intended quarter of entry. For example, to be considered valid for Fall 2024 admission, TOEFL scores must be no older than September 1, 2022. Personal copies are not considered official, nor are "attested" or notarized copies. However, it is to your advantage to include a paper copy of your score report in your Supplemental Information Packet. This helps us verify your scores quickly, should there be any delay in receiving the official report.

For more information about The Graduate School's English Proficiency requirement, click here .  The Graduate School's school code for TOEFL is 1565. Those taking the paper-based exam should select department code 01. When prompted, IBT test takers should request that their scores be sent to the graduate office and then select the program name that most closely matches their program of interest. If no match is available, the test taker may choose option 99.

Test of Spoken English (TSE)

International students wishing to be considered for appointment as a Teaching Assistant during any year of study in The Graduate School will also need to submit an official Test of Spoken English (TSE) with a score of 50 or higher.

To ensure that we have adequate time to assemble all items submitted on your behalf, you should submit the application and all supporting documents by 5pm CST on December 1st. As a general rule, the earlier you get your materials to the Northwestern, the better your chances for full consideration.  However, applications received more than one calendar year before the anticipated date of matriculation will be returned to the sender.  Please note that Northwestern does not accept responsibility for postal or courier service delays in receiving items sent by mail.

Additional Information for International Applicants: Visas

All application requirements discussed throughout this web site pertain to both US and international students. Items of special relevance to foreign applicants are given throughout. However, the following information, regarding visas, is applicable only to you.

In order to study in the United States, international students must obtain the appropriate visa. Students attending Northwestern University will receive one of the following types of visas.

  • F-1 Student Visa, with an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility issued by Northwestern University.
  • J-1 Exchange-Visitor (Student) Visa, with an IAP-66 Certificate of Eligibility issued by Northwestern University (or a sponsoring agency).

Before Northwestern can issue the I-20 or IAP-66, US immigration law requires that the university must have documented evidence that a student has adequate financial resources to cover the expenses of studying here. (Additional funds must be verified if a student plans to bring a spouse or children.) Northwestern asks for this information on the Request for Visa form, on the reverse side of the confirmation of intention to register form, which is sent to all admitted students in their admissions packets.

If you are being awarded any financial aid from Northwestern, we will use these figures, combined with the information you supply, in submitting your request for visa to the International Office here at Northwestern. Please note, however, that each student must assume responsibility for the amount needed beyond what Northwestern may award.

The I-20 or the IAP-66 is issued only after a student has submitted official TOEFL scores (when applicable), been offered admission, has returned the Confirmation of Intention to Register form and has provided verification of the necessary funds.

Department of Psychology

You are here, applying for admission, important information for applicants .

  • The deadline for graduate program applications is Dec. 1st
  • Due to the pandemic, offers for virtual interviews are being conducted in a rolling manner. Final decisions regarding offers of admission will be completed by mid-February
  • Information regarding the Pyschology Graduate program and the application process is included on this website.  If you have a specific question about the application portal that is not covered here, you may contact the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences .  If you have specific questions in regard to the requirements for our graduate program, or the process of applying, please contact our Department Registrar, Fredericka Grant .  For questions about whether a particular faculty member is accepting new students, you may reach out to them directly (and some faculty include this information on their lab websites).

Completed applications should be received at Yale by Dec. 1st. A record of your academic performance (“unofficial transcript”) is required and should be “uploaded” to your on-line application. An official grade transcript is neither required nor necessary for the review of your application. Students must submit three letters of recommendation and are encouraged to submit samples of their research work. Providing scores on the GRE Aptitude Test is optional, as are scores on the GRE Psychology Subject Test.  It is especially advisable to begin the application process early. A common problem in reviewing applications is that some are incomplete in some respect at the time the review begins and are therefore temporarily set aside. If these applications remain incomplete, they may never be reviewed by the departmental admissions committee. Accordingly, it is important to allow sufficient time for the independent information (transcripts, letters) to arrive at Yale in time to be processed.

Applicants should indicate primary faculty members in the department with whom they would be interested in working in their applications.  Because of the emphasis on close contact with faculty members in research, as well as effective student participation in small class groups, only about fifteen new students out of about seven hundred applicants can be admitted each year. Applicants should realize that the total number of applicants is many times larger than the number that can be admitted, and, further, individual feedback on applications is not possible. A fine academic record, evidence of research experience and potential are weighed together in the admission decision process.

To apply: Online Application to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

By filling out the form supplied in the Graduate School application, applicants will automatically be considered for all Yale financial awards for which they are eligible. A complete Bulletin of the Graduate School, which describes all graduate programs and provides general information, is available from the Graduate Admissions Office.

Applying to graduate school can be stressful and rife with questions—even when there isn’t a pandemic! This presentation shows you how to strategically approach the graduate school application process and highlight APA resources to help you find and apply to the best program for your goals.

Two current psychology graduate faculty discuss how the current events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and closures of campuses, might impact the admission and application process and share some general advice on what to expect.

Ana M. Franco-Watkins, PhD , is professor and chair, department of psychological sciences, Auburn University. Franco-Watkins works closely with the program directors of the department's four graduate programs (applied behavioral analysis, clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral sciences, and industrial and organizational psychology) on graduate applications and admissions. In addition, as chair, she also works with other psychology department chairs through the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology to address COVID-19's impacts on graduate admission.

Jerry Kernes, PhD , is professor, program chair, and director of clinical training PsyD program in clinical psychology, University of La Verne. Kernes is responsible for the administration and oversight of all aspects of the PsyD program. His duties include student recruitment and retention, practicum and internship training, and student advising. He chairs the program admissions committee.

This program does not offer CE credit.

Please note that our GRE General Test score requirements for admission have changed. For candidates seeking Fall 2025 admission: -  required for applicants to the Clinical Science area  -  optional but recommended for applicants to the Social, Developmental, and CBB areas*  As  of Ma y 2024, GRE General Test scores will be required for all applicants seeking Fall 2026 admission.  The  Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences welcomes applications for admission from individuals who have or will have by the time of matriculation a BA, BS, or equivalent undergraduate degree (for prospective international students, a three- or four-year undergraduate degree from an institution of recognized standing) and actively seeks applicants from groups historically  underrepresented in graduate schools . All degree candidates are admitted for full-time study beginning in the fall term.

Immigration status does not factor into decisions about admissions and financial aid. For more information, see  Undocumented at Harvard .

If you already hold a PhD or its equivalent, or are an advanced doctoral candidate at another institution, you may apply to a PhD program only if it is in an unrelated field of study; however, preference for admissions and financial aid will be given to those who have not already had an opportunity to study for a doctoral degree at Harvard or elsewhere. You may also want to consider pursuing non-degree study through our  Special Student or Visiting Fellow  programs.

Eligible Harvard College students with advanced standing may apply in the fall of their junior year to earn an AM or SM degree during their final year of undergraduate study. Interested students must contact the  Office of Undergraduate Education  for eligibility details before applying.

Questions about the application or required materials should be directed to the Harvard Griffin GSAS Admissions Office at  [email protected] or 617-496-6100.

*Graduate student admissions are among the most important decisions we make as a department. Like many other PhD programs around the US and abroad, we have wrestled with the question of whether we should continue to require that applicants to our PhD program submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of their application. After extensive review of the scientific literature and robust discussion among our faculty, we have decided to continue to make submission of GRE scores optional, but to Recommend that students submit GRE scores if they are able to do so. We wanted to share our candid thoughts on this here.

A number of empirical and review papers have noted that performance on the GRE is not a strong predictor of performance on a number of graduate school metrics (e.g., correlation with graduate school GPA = .21-.31, which represent small to medium effect sizes; Woo et al., 2023) and that the fact that the significant group differences (by race/ethnicity and gender) in GRE scores suggest it may discourage those from underrepresented groups from applying to PhD programs. Other research has shown that although there are limitations to the GRE, other potential predictors of success in graduate school have even smaller correlations with such outcomes, and removing the GRE would lead us to rely on these other potentially biased factors, such as where a person received their undergraduate degree, what research lab they had the opportunity to train in, and letters of recommendation.(1) We have heard anecdotally from current and former PhD students (including those historically underrepresented in PhD programs) who argue that the GRE helped them demonstrate their abilities when they didn’t attend a top undergraduate institution or work in a well-known research lab.

On balance, we acknowledge that the GRE is an imperfect test and should not be used as the single deciding factor in admissions; however, we fear that excluding it altogether will introduce more, not less, bias into the admissions decision-making process. Thus, we have decided to keep the submission of GRE scores optional, but to recommend that students submit their scores if they are able to do so.

We know that many students might expect that we are looking for near-perfect scores as a requirement for admission. We are not. We do not use a rigid threshold for GRE scores, and take it into consideration with other factors (e.g., strong performance in undergraduate statistics might be used to demonstrate quantitative abilities in place of strong performance on the quantitative section of the GRE). To be transparent about this, we note that our past 10 years’ of admitted PhD applicants have had scores on the GRE ranging on the Quantitative section from the 38th to the 98th percentile, and on the Verbal section ranging from the 59th to the 99th percentile.(2 )

We will continue to work toward determining how to make admissions decisions in a way that identifies the candidates who match best with what our PhD training program has to offer and in doing so may make further adjustments to our admissions requirements in future admissions cycles.

Great Psychology Motivation Letter : 9+ Samples

Psychology Motivation Letter

A psychology motivation letter is a crucial element of your graduate school application, and it can be the deciding factor in whether or not you are accepted into the program of your choice. The purpose of a motivation letter is to demonstrate your commitment to the field of psychology, your academic achievements, and your research experience. It is also an opportunity for you to showcase your personality, your goals, and your unique perspective on the field.

Writing a strong motivation letter requires careful thought and planning. It should be concise, well-organized, and written in a professional and engaging tone. The letter should clearly outline your reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in psychology and explain how your academic and research background have prepared you for success in the field. By crafting a compelling and persuasive motivation letter, you can increase your chances of being accepted into the graduate program of your dreams.

Key Components of a Strong Psychology Motivation Letter

  • Introduction: Begin with a clear and concise introduction that highlights your interest in psychology and the specific program or institution you are applying to.
  • Background: Briefly mention your academic and professional background, highlighting any relevant coursework, research, or practical experience in the field of psychology.
  • Research Interests: Discuss your research interests, including any specific topics or areas of psychology that you are passionate about and hope to explore further in your studies.
  • Goals: Clearly state your short-term and long-term goals related to your academic and professional pursuits in the field of psychology.
  • Skills and Qualifications: Highlight your skills and qualifications that make you a strong candidate for the program or institution, including your academic achievements, research experience, and relevant skills such as communication and critical thinking.
  • Fit: Explain why you believe you are a good fit for the program or institution, including any specific professors, courses, or research opportunities that align with your interests and goals.
  • Conclusion: End with a strong conclusion that summarizes your motivation and qualifications, reiterating your interest in the program or institution and your potential to contribute to the field of psychology.

  • Rambling or making the letter too long: Keep the letter concise and focused on the key points.
  • Focusing only on your achievements: Talk about your motivation, goals, and passion for psychology, and how the program will help you achieve them.
  • Ignoring the program requirements: Make sure you understand the program requirements and how you can meet them.
  • Lacking specificity: Give specific examples and experiences to support your claims and show your expertise and knowledge.

Include any educational, personal, cultural, economic, or social experiences, challenges or opportunities relevant to your academic journey. In addition, please describe any aspects of your personal background, accomplishments, or achievements that will allow the department to evaluate your contributions to the University’s diversity mission. Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity can take a variety of forms, such as efforts to advance equitable access to education, public service that addresses the need of a diverse population, or research that explores inequalities.

Additional Questions and Essays:  Applicants to the Clinical area must answer 5 additional questions. Applicants to the Quantitative area must provide a supplementary essay up to 1000 words describing their research interests in more detail. Supplementary essays are available in the ‘Psychology’ section of the application once you select ‘Psychology PHD’ under ‘Plans for Graduate Study’.

B) Three Letters of Recommendation:

It is your choice who you would like to choose as your recommenders. Your letters of recommendation can be submitted electronically by your recommenders either before or after you submit the application for Graduate Admission. It is also possible to send your letter of recommendation requests to your recommenders before you submit the application. Three (3) letters of recommendation must be submitted electronically through the application. Letter of recommendation services such as your school’s career center, Interfolio.com, etc. must also submit letters electronically through the application for the letters to be accepted. The Letter of Recommendation Rating/Reference Form will only be sent to your recommenders when they submit your letters electronically through the application.

C) Transcripts:

All applicants must upload transcripts with the application. Unofficial copies of transcripts are acceptable for review purposes. If you are recommended for admission and decide to accept the offer, you must submit final, official copies of your transcript for final approval of your admission by the UCLA Division of Graduate Education office. Any discrepancies between the unofficial and official transcripts could lead to withdrawal of an offer of admission. International applicants must upload copies of original and translated international transcripts per country- or educational system-specific guidelines ( https://grad.ucla.edu/gasaa/admissions/ACADRECS.HTM ). UCLA does not accept international transcripts evaluated or verified by a service such as World Education Services (WES).

  • GRE General Test:  Applicants for admission to our graduate program are not required to submit a GRE score report as part of their application package. Applicants may voluntarily submit GRE test scores and they will be reviewed as one part of the holistic application consideration. The applications with GRE scores will not be given greater weight than those that do not include scores. During the 2020 and 2021 admission cycles combined, 25% of applicants to the UCLA Psychology graduate program submitted GRE General Test scores. The number of applicants that applied, submitted GRE scores, and the percentage of applicants that submitted GRE scores, organized by Area, can be found in the table below.

psychology university application letter

  • GRE Psychology Subject Test:  Consistent with the policy of the UCLA Department of Psychology, applicants to the clinical psychology doctoral program at UCLA will not be required to take the GRE. The GRE Psychology Subject Test is not required and will not be used to make admissions decisions. However, applicants who score above the 70 th  percentile can use the GRE Subject Test to partially fulfill Discipline-Specific Knowledge requirements (e.g., cognitive, social) that are part of accreditation by the American Psychological Association. In this way, admitted students may be able to reduce the amount of, or more flexibly select, coursework needed to complete program requirements. Students may elect to take the GRE Subject Test after their admission into our program and all program requirements can be fulfilled without taking the test.
  • To ensure your official test scores are properly processed if you choose to submit them, please be sure the personal information provided in the UCLA application for Graduate Admission matches exactly the information provided to the testing service. Do not wait for your test results to complete the application. Educational Testing Service (ETS) sends scores electronically to UCLA. The institution code for UCLA is 4837. The department/major code is not necessary.
  • Official GRE test scores  cannot be more than five years old . If the GRE tests are taken more than once, the most recent scores are considered.
  • Quantitative program applicants: Quantitative psychology is by definition very reliant on quantitative skill sets which can be demonstrated in a number of ways: performance in mathematics courses, performance on the quantitative section of the GRE, and/or letters of recommendation speaking to your quantitative expertise. When reading applications, we will look for demonstrated ability in quantitative skills, but this should not require a GRE score if other parts of your application speak to these skills. If you are unsure whether you should or should not include GRE scores in your application to UCLA, please feel free to contact the quantitative area faculty.
  • TOEFL or IELTS EXAM:  INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS whose first language is not English must submit an official TOEFL (Test of English As a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score. Applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher from a university located in the United States or in another country in which English is both the primary spoken language of daily life and the language of instruction (i.e., Australia, Barbados, Canada, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, United Kingdom) and the medium of instruction, or who have completed at least two years of full-time study at such an institution, are exempted from both the TOEFL/IELTS requirement and the English as a Second Language Placement Examination. The minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores are 560 on the paper and pencil test, 220 on the computer-based test, or 87 on the internet-based test (TOEFL/IBT), or overall band score of 7.0 (IELTS). TOEFL and IELTS test scores are valid for only two years. Educational Testing Service (ETS) sends scores electronically to UCLA. The institution code for UCLA is 4837. The department/major code is not necessary. Please contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for GRE and TOEFL test scheduling, registration, and information. Visit the Educational Testing Service web site at  www.ets.org  or call them at (510) 873-8100 (West Coast) or (609) 771-7100 (East Coast). IELTS is administered by local IELTS test centers throughout the world. Applicants should consult  www.ielts.org  for the nearest IELTS test center.

Who is an Assistant Psychologist?

An assistant psychologist is like a superhero sidekick; they work alongside licensed psychologists to help people feel better. Usually, they can work in a variety of settings, such as:

  • And private practices.

To be an assistant psychologist, a bachelor's degree in psychology or a related field is the minimum requirement. However, having some experience working in a similar job or through related internships helps.

Hands-on experience working as an intern or in related fields is highly beneficial.

What does an Assistant Psychologist do?

From a broader perspective, an assistant psychologist handles patients with psychological disorders.

But if we break their responsibilities down, some of the important tasks that they need to do include:

  • Conducting psychological evaluations and assessments on patients
  • Assisting licensed psychologists in developing and implementing treatment plans
  • Monitoring and tracking patient progress
  • Coordinating with other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients

How to Write an Assistant Psychologist Cover Letter

Although templates are useful for reference, you shouldn't simply copy them. It is essential to frame your unique experiences and ideas in your cover letter to make it stand out.

Here are some useful tips to guide you in crafting a compelling cover letter that showcases your skills and qualifications:

1. Research the company

Before you start writing your cover letter, research your employer thoroughly. Look at their website, social media accounts, and any other resources you can find.

It will help you understand their culture and other aspects. Gather your insights and customize your cover letter accordingly.

2. Address the hiring manager by name

Address the hiring manager by name whenever possible. It will show that you've researched the position and are invested in it. It will also make your cover letter more personalized.

You should not use a generic salutation like "To Whom It May Concern."

3. Express your interest

In the beginning, express your interest in the position and the company. Explain why you're excited about the opportunity and what you will bring to the team.

For example, "I am excited about the opportunity to work with a team of experienced professionals who share my passion for helping patients with psychological disorders."

4. Highlight your skills and qualifications

Highlight your qualifications and skills in the body of your cover letter. Focus on the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position, such as:

  • Conducting psychological evaluations
  • Developing and monitoring treatment plans
  • And handling emergencies

It will help you tailor your credentials to fit the company's needs.

5. Provide specific examples

Simply listing your qualifications and skills might not be enough to notice you. Provide specific examples of your skills and qualifications to demonstrate your abilities. It will help provide context to the hiring manager while assessing your suitability for the role.

For example, mention when you successfully managed a patient in an unpredictable situation or collaborated with healthcare providers to develop a treatment plan.

6. Use keywords

Certain words appear more important in the job description for this assistant position. For example, psychological evaluation, communication skills, hands-on experience, or crisis management.

Incorporate those keywords from the job description into your cover letter according to their relevance. It will show that you've read the job posting and understand what the company seeks.

7. Close with a call to action

Finally, show some gratitude to the hiring manager and express your enthusiasm for the position. Close with a call to action, such as asking for an interview or offering additional information.

So, now you are almost ready to create a compelling assistant psychologist cover letter that showcases your qualifications and experience.

What Should You Include in Your Assistant Psychologist Cover Letter?

So, now you have a good idea of your cover letter's importance in the hiring process. But what should you include to ensure you stand out from the crowd?

THE GRE SCORES WILL BE REQUIRED FOR FALL 2024 ADMISSION TO THE COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY PROGRAM.

Counseling psychology focuses on the typical adaptation of individuals to their environment and helping them cope with crises, problems of daily living, and mental challenges. Traditionally, counseling psychology has been concerned with both the remedial and preventative aspects of mental health with an emphasis on client strengths. Respect for diversity and for values different from one's own is a central value of Counseling Psychology and more recently there has been a call to actively work toward social justice. Counseling psychologists commonly provide services, teach, and/or engage in research with or pertaining to members of social groups that have often been devalued, viewed as deficient, or otherwise marginalized in the larger society. You can find out more about the counseling psychology specialty area on the Society for Counseling Psychology web page .

The Counseling Psychology Program at UNT endorses the scientist-practitioner model of training and affirms the value of integrating practice and science throughout a psychologist's training and career-long participation in the profession. The program is committed to the idea that human problems are the result of complex interactions of biological influences, environmental factors, and developmental changes in the person. We are also committed to the affirmation of diversity and social justice in the broadest sense, and specifically in psychology as it relates to the alleviation of stress and promotion of mental wellness. We highly value the dignity and worth of individuals inclusive of their gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, age, physical and mental abilities, political or spiritual beliefs, socioeconomic class, and other identities. As such, we recognize and incorporate these values and principles in the training and practice of counseling psychology.

The Counseling Psychology doctoral program at UNT is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association's Committee on Accreditation [750 First Street NE, Washington, D.C. 20002-4242, telephone (202) 336-5979]. The program was first accredited in 1978 under the directorship of Ray W. Johnson, Ph.D. The current Program Director is Chiachih DC Wang, Ph.D.

The most recent APA reaccreditation process was completed in 2018 by APA Commission on Accreditation, which reaffirmed the full accreditation of the program with the next site visit scheduled to be held in 2028.

MBA Application Tips: How to Secure Your Letters of Recommendation

Wondering who you should ask to write your recommendation letters here are some helpful tips from admissions to keep in mind when selecting recommenders..

As you begin working diligently on your application, it’s important to recognize that letters of recommendation are an important part of the process. Your recommenders' letters allow the admissions committee to view your candidacy through the unique perspective of a third-party point of view. Given how often we get asked about recommendations, we thought we’d share answers to the most commonly asked questions so you can select the best recommenders and submit your application .

Who should I select as my first recommender?

While not required, we recommend that your first letter come from your current supervisor. This individual can offer intimate knowledge of your impact in and across the organization.

What if it’s not feasible to ask my current supervisor?

Perhaps you’re in a new job, or you’re not ready to tell your boss you’re looking to do an MBA—that’s okay. Choose another professional contact with relevant knowledge of your strengths and weaknesses, such as a client, business partner, or prior supervisor. Just be sure to explain in your application why you are not selecting your current supervisor.

Who should I select as my second recommender?

Oftentimes, this can be trickier to figure out than the first recommender. While we have no preference of who you select to write the second letter, don’t immediately target the person with the most impressive title, a notable name, or the Booth alumnus you met briefly at an event. Instead, opt for someone who can speak to recent, specific examples of your performance and contributions. Consider how their perspective will offer new dimensions and insight into your candidacy.

How can I best prepare my recommenders?

Once you add them as recommenders in your application, make sure to confirm that they have received the link. Use the weeks that you’ve allotted for them to write your letter to connect further and have conversations. Share your goals for pursuing an MBA, the reasons you’re selecting Chicago Booth in particular, and refresh their memory on your specific professional accomplishments and any challenges you’ve overcome. This will help them to highlight your unique attributes and allow you to stand out.

What’s a common misstep in selecting recommenders?

The biggest blunder we’ve seen is not giving your recommenders enough runway before the deadline to think deeply about your candidacy and craft a thoughtful letter. Give your recommenders a leg up by sending the invite through our application early on. Then there is more time to have conversations, process, and write—and ensure your application will be its strongest when you’re ready to submit.

We hope you found these tips useful and look forward to getting to know more about you through your recommendation letters!

Assistant Professor of Psychology - Developmental Psychology Apply now to Assistant Professor of Psychology - Developmental Psychology

  • PSYCHOLOGY / LETTERS AND SCIENCE: SOCIAL SCIENCES / UC Davis

Position overview

Application window.

Open date: August 26, 2024

Next review date: Tuesday, Oct 1, 2024 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Apply by this date to ensure full consideration by the committee.

Final date: Monday, Jun 30, 2025 at 11:59pm (Pacific Time) Applications will continue to be accepted until this date, but those received after the review date will only be considered if the position has not yet been filled.

Position description

The Department of Psychology at the University of California, Davis invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) position in Developmental Psychology. We are seeking a developmental psychologist with expertise in social-emotional development and/or health psychology. Example research topics include socialization processes; identity development; cultural, psychosocial, and structural determinants of children’s health; and developmental perspectives on stress and health. We are particularly interested in candidates who consider how these developmental processes manifest in diverse contexts or underrepresented communities.

As one of the country’s leading research institutions, and an emerging Hispanic-Serving Institution, UC Davis seeks candidates with exceptional potential for research, teaching, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion. The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the barriers preventing full participation of members from student communities historically excluded from higher education, including (but not limited to) individuals marginalized due to their race or ethnicity, LGBTQIA+ status, veterans, individuals with disabilities, individuals from economically disadvantaged groups, first-generation scholars, and undocumented students. In addition to being exceptional scholars, successful candidates will help advance UC Davis’ goal of improving access and building an inclusive community for all marginalized communities. The successful candidate will also have a track record (calibrated to career stage) of teaching, research, or service activities addressing the needs of individuals historically excluded from higher education, and a clear vision of how their work at UC Davis will contribute to the University’s mission of serving the needs of our diverse state and student population.

Applicants are required to submit a research statement describing their research to date and future research goals, and a contributions to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) statement describing (a) their track record of engagement and activity related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as (b) their plans for future engagement (see https://academicaffairs.ucdavis.edu/guidelines-writing-diversity-statement for guidance and information about the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion). The DEI statement will be carefully read as a standalone document and should, therefore, include all relevant information related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, even if aspects are also discussed in other submitted materials.

In addition, applicants should submit a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement describing their experience as well as perspectives and practices related to effective teaching, three representative publications (or preprints), and names and contact information for at least three individuals who may be asked to submit letters of recommendation. All application materials should be submitted electronically at: https://recruit.ucdavis.edu/JPF06660 .

The start date for this position is July 1, 2025. The position will remain open until filled. Applications must be submitted by October 1, 2024 for full consideration. The reference check involves contacting the administration of the applicant’s previous institution(s) to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. Professor Kimberly Rios and PhD Student Alexis Morales Receive Adversarial Collaboration Grant

Professor Rios headshot

Professor Kimberly Rios, PhD student Alexis Morales, and collaborator Michael Zarate at the University of Texas at El Paso have received a grant from the University of Pennsylvania's Adversarial Collaboration Project. Funded originally by the Koch Foundation (which gave a sub-award to UPenn), the project brings together researchers who have competing/opposing hypotheses and provides funds for the researchers to investigate which of these hypotheses is supported by the data. This project tests how Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans perceive political candidates and organizations who use the new terms "Latinx" and "Latine" to communicate with potential voters. Preliminary data suggests that Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans, particularly those who are cisgender and heterosexual, do not identify with the labels "Latinx" and "Latine," and view these labels as primarily used by non-Hispanic White people. The team is interested in extending these findings to the political realm and determining when the use of the terms "Latinx" and "Latine" is most likely to induce backlash. We asked Professor Rios to tell us more about this fascinating project. Could you provide some background on the motivation behind this project or pursuit?

All three of us (Alexis, Dr. Zarate, and I) identify as  Hispanic/Latino(a). However, we differ in the extent to which we refer to ourselves and our communities as "Latinx" or "Latine". In our conversations about when Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans might find "Latinx" and "Latine" especially egregious, we found that we had different predictions! On one hand, Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans might be most averse to a non-Hispanic White politician (or primarily White organization) that adopts the terms "Latinx" and "Latine" if they perceive such terms as being imposed onto "us" (the ingroup) by "them" (the outgroup). On the other hand, Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans might be most averse to a Latino politician (or primarily Latino organization) that adopts the terms "Latinx" and "Latine" if they view doing so as pandering to White Americans' interests and, in a sense, betraying the ingroup. We look forward to learning which of these predictions is best supported by the data! Were there any collaborative efforts or partnerships that played a crucial role in the success of this project?

I'm grateful for the interesting and informative discussions my student Alexis and I have had about issues related to our identities and associated terminology. Without these discussions, our project would never have come to fruition. Additionally, not only has Dr. Zarate been a source of ideas (and sometimes opposing hypotheses!) for this project, but he is also my longtime friend and mentor in the field. I thank him for inspiring me to pursue identity-related research and providing constant encouragement (e.g., positive feedback on publications or reviews, going out of his way to make sure we connect at conferences) throughout my career. Major projects often come with challenges. Could you share a key challenge you faced and how you overcame it? What did you learn from this experience?

Despite that our initial data show overall resistance to the terms "Latinx" and "Latine" among the Hispanic/Latino(a) community, Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans who identify as LGBTQ+ may see "Latinx" and "Latine" as more inclusive than "Latino." (And we do have some evidence that this is the case among LGBTQ+ participants in our studies.) As a result, it is challenging to balance the needs and preferences of the Hispanic/Latino(a) community and the LGBTQ+ community. Because Hispanic/Latino(a) LGBTQ+ Americans belong to two different minority groups, they are perhaps especially sensitive to cues as to whether their identities are valued in different situations... and such cues can include language and labels. Thus, from a practical standpoint, we definitely wouldn't recommend using "Latino" instead of "Latinx" or "Latine" even if that is the preference of most Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans. Instead, the context and audience matter! Based on your experience with this endeavor, what advice or insights would you offer to others who might be considering similar opportunities?

Disagreement with other researchers can be healthy and constructive. Sometimes the most interesting ideas are borne out of competing theoretical perspectives and predictions. So, if you are chatting with a colleague and you can't agree on which of your perspectives is "correct," perhaps it is worthwhile to turn that chat into a research collaboration! Looking ahead, how do you see this project evolving or expanding?

We hope this project sheds light on the identity-related terms Hispanic/Latino(a) Americans prefer for politicians and organizations to use, and under what conditions. Perhaps more important, however, our results could have implications for the factors that mobilize Hispanic/Latino(a) voters and increase political engagement among this community. In the future, we'd like to assess such outcomes. We also are working on a separate set of studies assessing how Hispanic/Latino(a) college students' sense of belonging and motivation in school is affected by administrators' and professors' use of the terms "Latinx" and "Latine."

[email protected]

Paramus, NJ, United States

I am excited to submit my resume and cover letter for the Summer Psychology Intern job within Smith Counseling, Inc. in Paramus, NJ. With developed field knowledge and multiple important skills and qualities, I am confident I would be an excellent fit for the role. What’s more, I believe it would be a great opportunity for me to further improve my expertise and grow both professionally and personally.

Next, I worked as a Psychology Intern for three months at Arista Counseling & Psychotherapy, Inc. last summer. Besides completing professional psychological assessments, educating clients on various mental disorders, and monitoring and evaluating clients’ progress, I also proactively participated in the development of new treatment plans and maintained confidential documents and records. During my time there, I had a great chance to not only collaborate with field professionals from around the world but I also acquired crucial critical thinking and analytical abilities. I am a patient-oriented individual offering a deep passion for Psychology, exceptional observation skills, and a strong determination to perform great work. It would be a pleasure for me to join your team and I would welcome the opportunity to provide further insight into my qualifications.

“Student Address

Dear Dr. Rivera:

It is with great pleasure that I submit this formal letter of interest for the Marriage and Family Therapist Intern position offered at your clinic. In speaking with Julia Gulia, Clinical Training Coordinator at Pepperdine University, about my interests in the field of psychology, she highly recommended that I further my experience at Pepperdine Community Counseling Clinic. As you will see from my attached resume, I am a graduate of the MFT program at Pepperdine University’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology.

My experience working at New Directions for Youth afforded me the opportunity to develop new therapeutic skills and expand on personal attributes vital to the therapeutic process. I have a strong work ethic and am self-motivated, intuitive, and organized. I have a positive attitude, and most importantly, great interpersonal and communication skills. My position with New Directions for Youth enabled me to interact with and assist at-risk youth through individual, family, and group counseling on issues ranging from depression and anger management to interpersonal relationship difficulties and substance abuse. By facilitating gang prevention and

parenting groups, I developed skills in being a supportive, empathic, and efficient leader. Furthermore, my experiences volunteering for a variety of mentorship and tutoring agencies have instilled in me the desire to give back to the community. Specifically, I have become more adept at interacting with clients from a variety of backgrounds and have developed a passion for helping clientele that might not otherwise have access to therapeutic services except through a community agency.

Applicant Selection Factors

Each year, we receive a large number of completed applications for a limited number of class positions. The Admissions Committee takes a broad range of factors into consideration as we select candidates, including:

  • Academic background
  • Understanding of the role of the PT
  • Enthusiastic letters of reference
  • Community service and achievements
  • Other life experiences and extracurricular activities
  • A mature, insightful essay.

Although an applicant’s entire academic record is considered, strong academic performance alone does not ensure acceptance. While prior experience in a physical therapy setting is not required, this experience is considered a beneficial attribute and viewed positively by the Admissions Committee.

PT mentoring and shadowing experiences are not required but are encouraged.

Letters of reference from a physical therapist are strongly encouraged.

  • Evidence of personal integrity, maturity, motivation, communication skills, interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills, writing ability, dedication, and the ability to work with others are additional factors that will be considered.

The above qualities are evaluated by several means, including letters of reference, the scope and nature of extracurricular activities (including work and volunteer experience), the scope and breadth of prior education, and through the interview process. Our recent entering class profiles  will give you some insight into how successful applicants have performed in some of the areas assessed by the Admissions Committee.

Interviews may be on campus or online from September to January. Candidates who are invited to interview will be contacted by phone or email. Declining an invitation or failing to appear for a scheduled interview will result in rejection of your application. Early submission of your application can increase your chances of interview selection. Interview results are confidential and are considered in the competitive selection process.

Offers of Admission

The program may make admission offers as early as September during the year prior to matriculation. Offers will be continuously made until the class is filled.

A $500 seat deposit is required upon acceptance of an admission offer; this deposit will be applied toward the student’s first semester.

Upon acceptance of an offer of admission, applicants who were actively enrolled in coursework at the time of application must request final official transcripts from their final institution to be sent directly to the Office of Admissions at UNTHSC. (Final transcripts must list all courses including those that were in progress between initial application and final matriculation into the DPT program.)

Questions or complaints should be directed to the Equal Employment Opportunity Office at 817-735-2357.
