PhD studies at the University Department of Neurosurgery

The PhD program at the University Department of Neurosurgery is conducted in collaboration with the  Center for Brain Research and CLINS .  Scientific work and a high level of commitment to the subject of neurosurgery are required.

PhD Programme UN094

Center for Brain Research – Neuroscience Programme

Neuroscience is currently one of the main focuses of both national and international research programmes. The aim of neuroscience research is the elucidation of the normal function of the nervous system as well as the discovery of the molecular mechanism underlying the pathological changes in neurological and psychiatric disorders.

The nervous system is an organ system that is highly complex and involves different cell types as well as neuronal networks. This complexity is reflected by the fact that 60% of all known genes are expressed in the nervous system and 30% of the genes are nervous system specific. One third of all known human disorders is primarily neurological or has marked neurological involvement. As the ability for regeneration of the nervous system is limited, many of these disorders lead to chronic functional deficits and thus to an enormous burden on individuals and the society.

Modern neuroscience is multi-disciplinary and involves such disciplines as biochemistry, molecular neurobiology, cellular neurobiology, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy, neuropathology, neuroimmunology, clinical neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry and neurology. The aim of the neuroscience programme is to educate the students in a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary way in preparation for work within the field of neuroscience. Besides the practical dissertation, this accompanying program gives not only the theoretical backbone but also guides the students through a practical course to learn the most important techniques by actually doing them. If you are interested in this exiting field of research then search the list of participating research units, get in contact with the group leaders and apply for open positions. UN790 – Doctoral Programme

CLINS Doctoral Program Clinical Neurosciences

Neuroscience is a main focus of research and high-end medicine at the Medical University Vienna. The aim of Clinical Neurosciences is innovation in prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of disorders of the nervous and muscular systems.

The professional doctoral program „Clinical Neurosciences“ (CLINS) addresses neurological, psychiatric and neuro-muscular disorders in fetus, children, and adults. Interdisciplinary interaction of diagnostic  and therapeutic disciplines in combination with basic biomedical research is a key element of the program. Mutual guest lectures and translational research projects will link the applied and basic research doctoral programs.

CLINS will provide students with scientific competence enabling them to improve biomedical practice  by means of research and is complementary to the basic research PhD program „Neuroscience“ (coordinator: Johannes Berger, Brain Research Institute)  CLINS Program Coordinator: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Johannes Hainfellner E-Mail: [email protected]

Find some helpful recommendations for the thesis registration procedure in this section. If there are further suggestions or conditions by your programme coordinator please pay attention to these.

Recommended thesis registration procedure:

  • work out the thesis proposal and get the agreement by your supervisor
  • discuss two further members of your thesis committee with your supervisor; in case that the supervisor has "junior supervisor"-status: the programme coordinator provides a senior supervisor evaluated within the thematic programme who may be one of the two further committee members
  • submit the thesis proposal and the data of your thesis committee members to the programme coordinator
  • the programme coordinator decides over the proposal; get all data and signatures required ( except by direction of curriculum) on the thesis registration form if the programme coordinator agrees
  • submit the thesis registration form and the thesis proposal in as PDF via mail to the study department

Additional information

Beside your chosen supervisor, two further members of your thesis committee may be suggested to the programme coordinator. There are no certain requirments for a committee memeber, als look as the person is good in his research field. At least one of the two further members must not belong to the organizational unit of the supervisor and can be chosen from all over the world.

Please note: A PhD Programme UN094´s  doctoral thesis has to be associated with a peer-reviewed and funded research project . In the PhD Programme N094 there is to publish at least one first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal during the elaboration of the thesis, however latest by the end of the studies . Data privacy information: Before you implement a survey at the Medical University of Vienna (online or by sharing-out questionnaires) you have to request for the statement of the inner-university data protection committee. This procedure concerns all administerings of questionnaire that collect data of the university employees, students and applicants to studies at the MedUni Vienna. For more detailed information please visit the webpage of the Data Protection Commission .

Please note, that you need to submit your thesis proposal within the first two semesters!

Please decide either on the PdF-file or on the Word-file in order to edit your thesis proposal.

Doctoral Candidate Presents Dissertation Findings at National Conference

Karmen Yu’s research addresses the question: How do undergraduate Calculus I students experience and navigate their learning of calculus in the parallel spaces of coursework and inquiry-oriented complementary instruction?

Posted in: Research Presentations

Karmen with her mentor Dr. Steven Greenstein after presenting at the 2024 RUME conference

Doctoral candidate Karmen Yu recently presented findings from her dissertation study at the annual Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education conference in Omaha, NE. Karmen’s talk, entitled Case Studies of Undergraduate Students’ Agentive Participation in the Parallel Spaces of Calculus I Coursework and Peer-Led, Inquiry-Oriented, Complementary Instruction.  She shared findings from one case study that included characterizations of the different forms of agentive participation afforded to students in each of the two spaces, as well as their complementary nature relative to learning calculus with understanding. It was a fantastic presentation. Karmen’s advisor, Dr. Steven Greenstein, was a contributor to the presentation and was there to support her. Great work, Karmen!
