Students are expected to remain lockstep with their admitted cohort while completing the course requirements. The program is offered as a hybrid model, with classes delivered online as well as in the live traditional classroom format. In order to accommodate working professionals, classes are scheduled during the evenings and weekends at the Boca Raton campus. The FAU DSW program is intended to train “Scholarly Clinicians”. Graduates of DSW programs around the country assume positions of leadership in the field in a myriad of roles and settings such as academia, clinical practice, and administration.

Baylor’s online Social Work PhD program is designed to develop leaders and educators who can lead visionary social work education or service programs and conduct original research addressing the complex social issues of our world. Students begin the program with a five day immersion experience on Penn’s Philadelphia campus at the start of the fall semester (late August/early September). During this residency period, students attend their first classes and participate in a variety of activities that immerse them in the Penn experience and prepare them for the DSW program. Students come to campus for one more five-day residency period in the summer following the first year. Students who are able to travel to campus more often are invited to do so to use the library, meet with faculty, and take advantage of other campus resources and activities.

Classes meet online two evenings each week for two hours. Students and faculty log in on their personal computers or devices from wherever they are. The real-time online video conferencing format allows everyone to be seen and heard at all times, closely approximating a physical classroom experience. Students are in class for the first two years of the program; in the third year, students participate in a Dissertation Seminar Series that provides support and structure as they complete the last stages of the dissertation.

The curriculum is designed to bridge theory, practice, and research, and prepare students for teaching. Students are actively engaged in learning about and critiquing the latest developments, discoveries, and best practices in evidence-based social work practice and teaching. Classes are taught by Penn faculty and renowned visiting faculty and clinician experts from across the country. The dissertation provides an opportunity to gain deep knowledge and become a content expert in a particular area, as well as contribute to the social work knowledge base.

Required Classes

During the second year, the student cohort selects two electives and takes them together as a group.

The degree and major requirements displayed are intended as a guide for students entering in the Fall of 2024 and later. Students should consult with their academic program regarding final certifications and requirements for graduation.

Sample Plan of Study

First-year curriculum.

The program begins with a two-semester foundation that spans clinical theory and research and ends with a core course on trauma-informed individual and organizational interventions. Concurrent with their coursework, students engage in a dissertation workshop that helps guide them through the first stages of the dissertation project. Near the end of the first year, students are matched with a dissertation chair who shepherds them through the remainder of the dissertation process.

Second-year Curriculum

The curriculum in year 2 continues with specialized, applied courses that cover clinical content and preparation for teaching. The second and final year of coursework culminates in two electives that the student cohort selects and takes together as a group. Students continue the dissertation work, under the direction of their dissertation committee.

Third-year Curriculum

During the third and final year of the program, students complete, defend and deposit the dissertation. There is no formal coursework, but students participate in a dissertation seminar that provides structure and support and keeps them moving steadily toward the defense.

To meet the need for accessible, affordable doctoral education, the Ph.D. in Social Work is offered as a part time program, delivered almost entirely online. All courses are offered asynchronously in an online platform, supplemented with synchronous meetings scheduled with faculty and peers within each course and throughout the program. Having a Ph.D. in Social Work degree offers many opportunities. Graduates with this degree can go on to academic positions as faculty in colleges or universities. They might take on tenure-track or clinical professor positions in programs that offer Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) degrees. Baylor's online PhD in social work is primarily taught in a synchronous video classroom that utilizes high-definition technology to connect students and the instructor in real-time. Classes are conducted much as they would be on campus, except the students are able to participate from anywhere in the world.

Higher education opportunities in social work

Those who seek to improve the lives of others and inspire social change in their communities often pursue careers in social work. But while a master’s in social work is often considered a terminal degree (meaning one can independently practice with that degree) there are two additional degree options for those seeking additional career advancement and opportunities at the top of the profession: a doctor of social work (DSW) or a PhD in social work.

Both DSW and PhD in social work degrees are excellent credentials that provide further specialization and advanced knowledge in social work that can benefit your career and personal growth. These degrees are also often accompanied by wage increases to reflect your enhanced expertise and work experience. 

The primary difference between the degrees is the desired career trajectory: a DSW is considered an advanced clinical practice degree and is best suited for those who want to work directly with clients or lead social service agencies. A PhD is an academic degree and is best suited for those interested in teaching and research at the undergraduate and graduate level. 

Doctor of social work (DSW) degree overview

A DSW degree is ideal if you want additional expertise in order to continue working with clients, as the DSW is considered to be an advanced professional practice degree. Clients can be individuals as in those seeking individual therapy (micro level practice), community groups and organizations (mezzo level practice), or even government officials or others creating, influencing and implementing policies and laws (macro level practice). The DSW degree prepares graduates for management and other leadership roles and advanced clinical practice in a specific area of social work, such as medical social work, addictions, or juvenile justice.

Social work PhD overview

If you are interested in designing and conducting research, a PhD is an excellent option to consider.  You’ll concentrate your studies and research to become an expert in one particular area of interest.  Similarly, if you are excited by the prospect of teaching and training the next generation of social workers, a PhD program prepares you to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  

While most PhD’s work in academia, this is not a requirement. Some may open consulting or research firms, others work in think tanks or international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), while others become speakers or authors. The PhD provides a rigorous academic background to prepare graduates for researching, writing and teaching about their area of expertise. This may be promoting resilience in foster care youth, assessing and improving telehealth/virtual therapy interventions for adolescents with substance use disorder, or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in female veterans.

Similarities and differences between social work DSW and social work PhD programs 

Similarities.

Both PhD and DSW programs have similar admissions requirements. You must have a master’s degree, preferably in social work. Sometimes programs will accept applicants with other graduate degrees but may require additional social work foundation courses as a requirement prior to graduation. 

You’ll need a GPA of at least 3.0 in order to be considered for admission to either type of program. Letters of recommendation are needed from previous employers and/or graduate school professors who can attest to your ability to handle the level of rigorous coursework a doctoral program requires. At least one written essay is required, describing your area of interest, your career goals and how the selected degree program will help you achieve those goals. Some schools require graduate record examination (GRE) scores as well. If you’re an international student, you’ll need to take and submit your scores for the TOEFL, or Test of English as a Foreign Language.

While both degree programs prefer that applicants have post-master’s work experience, this is not always a requirement. Some schools have joint MSW/PhD program tracks, wherein a student immediately enters the PhD program upon completion of the MSW courses. However, many DSW programs require that applicants have at least three or more years of social work experience before returning to school for the doctoral degree. Indeed, a number of students have a decade or more of experience in the field before pursuing their DSW.

The tuition you can expect for a campus-based social work doctoral degree depends on several factors. For instance, the cost per credit will affect your overall tuition expenses more than any other factor and can vary both from school to school and whether or not you are attending from out of state. Out-of-state credits usually cost more than in-state credits.

Furthermore, you have to consider the time it’ll take you to complete your Ph.D. program. Certain costs, like general technology fees or student housing expenses will continue to accumulate the longer you take to finish the program. Programs that can be completed more quickly will necessarily be cheaper in the long run unless the savings are offset by extremely high costs per credit.

US News and World Report indicates that doctoral programs in social work usually range between $915 per credit hour to $1730 per credit hour. Thus, most students can expect to pay between $38,000 and $90,000 in total tuition for their doctoral degrees. 

Time to completion

Both DSW and PhD programs have an average of two years of coursework to complete. The final research project for each program can take anywhere from one to four additional years, though this is dependent on a number of factors. On average, most DSW and PhD students complete their degrees within four years. 

Differences

Courses offered

Both types of programs can offer similar foundational courses covering social work theory, research methods and policy. DSW programs then offer specialized courses depending on the track or concentration that the student has selected. For example, if you’re in an advanced clinical practice track you may study psychopathology, pharmacology, and trauma-informed therapeutic interventions. If you are focusing on leadership and administration, you may study program evaluation, financial management of nonprofit organizations and trauma-informed leadership practices.

In contrast, PhD students will have additional courses in statistical analysis, research study design, writing for publication and teaching methods. Within the courses, you can tailor papers and projects to the area of specialization that you have selected and around which your dissertation research will be based.

Licensing requirements

As previously mentioned, some DSW programs require applicants to have a certain number of years of experience in the field prior to entering the degree program. Some even insist that applicants are Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) meaning they have completed the examination and practice hours required to be licensed by their state.  PhD programs do not have this requirement.

Program structure

The structure of the program is another big difference in DSW and PhD programs. Most DSW programs are designed to be completed by working professionals, so classes are offered in the evenings, on weekends or online. This allows students to continue gaining valuable practice experience while also applying topics taught in classes to real world scenarios they are facing in their daily work. Conversely, the majority of PhD courses are offered during the workday and are taught in-person. While this may be slowly changing, few courses are offered online, and relatively few students work full time while completing a PhD program.

Financial assistance

PhD programs are more likely to have fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships for their students. As social work faculty are awarded grant monies, they will often hire doctoral students as assistants to help reduce their workload while also providing valuable hands-on research experience for the student.  PhD students can also offset some of their tuition costs if hired as a teaching assistant. This provides the opportunity to build critical teaching skills while being mentored by a more experienced professor.  Some DSW programs do offer scholarships and other financial assistance packages, but this is much more common in PhD programs. 

Capstone versus dissertation

Finally, the required final project often differs between PhD and DSW degree programs, though this is not always the case. A dissertation is required by PhD programs. The dissertation is the culmination of a unique research project designed by the student, implemented, the data analyzed, and a report written in a standardized format. This may be in the form of one large report or broken down into three articles that are ready to submit to academic journals for publication depending on the program requirements. 

In contrast, DSW programs typically have students complete a capstone project as their final project. This too, is a research project or program evaluation, but on a smaller scale. The capstone project is much shorter, similar to a thesis. A capstone paper runs approximately 30 pages long and while it still has some of the same sections as a dissertation, including a literature review/ statement of the problem, a research component, data analysis and summary, it is not as detailed nor as in depth as a dissertation.

Career outlook for doctoral level social work graduates

Your potential earnings with a social work PhD can vary dramatically depending on your profession, especially as most social work professions don’t require a PhD.

Master’s level social workers earn an average salary of around $52,000 per year according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, with a Ph.D. or DSW, you’ll be able to command a higher salary. According to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW), PhD and DSW degree holders earn $20,000 to $25,000 more per year than MSW level social workers, and may earn well over $100,000 per year.  In fact, some tenured professors with a PhD can earn well over $175,000 a year. 

In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will be a 13 percent job growth rate over the next 10 years, meaning there should be plenty of jobs available for future graduates.

How do you decide what degree program is best for you? Below are some items to consider:

• What are your career goals? Do you want to open up your own nonprofit organization or become a director of a large agency? Then a DSW is a better fit for you. If you want to conduct research and teach social work students, then consider a PhD program.
• What areas of concentration or specialization does the program offer? This may be of more importance when selecting a PhD program. Does the program have faculty studying a similar or closely related area of interest that you’d like to focus on? If so, this means more opportunities for mentorship and guidance. If you select a program and want to study a specific topic or population that no one on the faculty has experience with, it may be a frustrating or less rewarding experience for you, by not having a closely aligned mentor. This may also limit your networking opportunities with similarly inclined colleagues.
• Finally, practical considerations are also necessary. Is the program local or would it require you to move, and how does that impact the total costs involved with completing the program? How would a move impact your family? Do you have the time and energy available to devote to doctoral studies? Do you have a strong support system to assist you? Do you have the financial resources to pursue full time education if you are unable to continue working?

A recap of a PhD in social work

PhD and DSW degrees provide specialized education and training for social workers wanting to reach the pinnacle of their fields. Programs are rigorous but create opportunities for incredible career growth and increased financial rewards that can far outweigh the tuition costs for these programs.  If you want to work in social work leadership or higher education, consider pursuing a DSW or PhD degree, as it can be well worth it!

Simmons University's PhD in Social Work program is designed for experienced practitioners to develop scientific research skills so they can advance the evidence base of the field. As the program enters its 40th year, it is leading innovation in PhD education by now offering its program online in order to better meet the needs of students who are balancing work and family responsibilities, live outside of the City of Boston, and who seek a student-oriented doctoral education. Simmons School of Social Work has more than 12 years of online teaching expertise it is bringing to the online PhD program. Faculty teaching in the PhD program are interdisciplinary scholars with experience working in on-ground and online research collaborations and teaching in online platforms.

The Simmons PhD in Social Work honors the practice experience of its students, while challenging them to view social work practice through a scientific lens as they transition to scholars. Our faculty are committed to collaborative and supportive mentoring of PhD doctoral students and encourage them to pursue a career path that is the best fit for their research and scholarly interests. Simmons PhD graduates engage in research that informs real-world practice issues.

The PhD program is offered on in an online format that mirrors our historical on-ground program. The program has 3 academic semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer). For the first 2 years, students take 2 courses and a seminar (7 credits) in both Fall and Spring and either 1 or 2 courses (3-6 credits) in the accelerated Summer term. Most courses are offered on Thursdays. Courses are designed to optimize learning and employ a format of active engagement among students and faculty. All courses are synchronous and held on Zoom, with some asynchronous content.

In addition to coursework, students complete teaching and research practicums and a dissertation. All of these can be done through online engagement. PhD students are welcome to be a part of the on-ground campus community as well. PhD students can come to campus to engage with faculty and students, teach courses and work on research projects, and participate in University activities and events. Students usually complete the program, including defense of the dissertation, in 4 to 6 years.

PhD students take 11 3-credit courses and a 1-credit integrative seminar throughout their time in the program (34 credits total).

The PhD program prepares students to become effective educators. Students receive formal training in the classroom and through a teaching practicum with our seasoned professors as part of the program requirements. Students entering with prior teaching experience work with their advisor and program director to ensure they add new knowledge and skills to their teaching portfolio. Qualified students are able to apply to the School of Social Work’s adjunct instructor pool to teach online and/or on-ground at any time.

The PhD Program is a research program. All courses have a research focus. The program advances student research skills through required methodological, statistical, and data analysis courses, and a required research practicum. It advances scholarly capacity to engage in high-level, meaningful science that improves the health and well-being of individuals and populations. Students have opportunities to participate in research assistantships internal and external to Simmons University.

Qualified students will take a comprehensive exam on curricular content from required coursework. Qualified students also will submit an empirical manuscript to a scientific peer-reviewed journal approved by the faculty. Upon meeting these requirements, the student will move into candidacy, and be eligible to begin dissertation work.

Students must complete a dissertation to graduate. The dissertation is an independent research project that demonstrates the candidate's ability to successfully engage in scholarly work. Specifically, the candidate will demonstrate empirical and conceptual knowledge, the ability to apply rigorous scientific methodology to a substantive area of study, and the capacity to articulate the applied relevance of the findings to the field. The Ph.D. candidate has the option to complete a traditional dissertation or three-paper dissertation.

The PhD program employs a mentorship model designed to help practitioners become scholars. Each student has a dedicated mentor, however our model emphasizes the importance of PhD program faculty and students working collaboratively to support student needs. Doctor of Social Work online

The online Doctor of Social Work (DSW) program at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work offers an advanced practice degree in social change and innovation for agency and community leaders and entrepreneurs.

The program prepares experienced professionals with the skills to develop practical, applied solutions to large-scale social challenges that directly impact vulnerable, marginalized or otherwise disadvantaged populations.

As a student in our online DSW program, you will develop characteristics of both practitioners and scholars. By adopting the disciplinary habits of scholars through rigorous inquiry and use of methodological tools associated with leading and managing innovation and change, you will become an effective social change leader.

Program Overview

As a DSW student, you will complete 42 units of coursework focused on three areas:

• Problem definition within the Grand Challenges for Social Work
• Innovative design
• Executive leadership in human service organizations and community contexts

The DSW program can be completed in nine semesters, or 36 months. Students focus on the Capstone Project for the last three semesters.

The curriculum includes Design Laboratory for Social Innovation I and II, where you will incorporate models from your courses to address one or more of the 14 Grand Challenges in Social Work, as defined by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare.

As a student, you will complete a capstone project that demonstrates your abilities and results in a prototype — such as a business plan, large contract proposal, or organizational redesign plan — that is ready for public communication and implementation. This project will require you to demonstrate and apply social innovation in the context of the diverse knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout the program.

Similar to a dissertation, the capstone provides you with a guided opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and understanding that you have acquired throughout your course of study. You are expected to identify a problem of importance connected to the Grand Challenges and develop an innovative proposal for an immediately actionable social change effort in that challenge area.

• SWK 5000 Social Policy, History, and Ethics This course delves into the historical, ethical, and policy foundations that shape social work practice. This course prepares students to develop their framework for social work practice that is anti-racist, anti-oppressive, reflective, and focused on seeking justice. In this course, students will examine the major fields of practice in the profession, and critically reflect on the development of social welfare policies, their historical contexts, and the ethical principles guiding social work interventions.
• SWK 5100 Social Work Practice I: Individuals and Families This course is one part of a series of required Social Work practice courses taken in the foundational year of the MSW program.  This course is an examination of the knowledge, values, and skills central to the generalist practice of social work with individuals and families. Students utilize an understanding of the social work process to develop skills in in problem solving within the context of social work values and ethics. Emphasis is placed on the ability to engage and assess with individuals and families using a strengths-based and culturally responsive approach.
• SWK 5200 Exploring Human Diversity This exploring human diversity social work course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political factors that shape human diversity and the ways in which these factors impact individuals, families, groups, and communities. The course will cover the impact of systems of oppression, privilege, and discrimination on marginalized populations and how these systems are interconnected. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the unique experiences and perspectives of diverse populations and on developing skills in culturally responsive practice. The course will also cover self-care and self-awareness for the social worker. 
• SWK 5300 Human Behavior and the Social Environment This course provides an overview of development through the lifespan in an environmental context.  Students will utilize major theoretical frameworks to assess individual and family development and will examine the impact of diversity and of trauma on health and well-being. This course builds on a liberal arts background and is designed to provide an understanding of key biological, psychological, social, spiritual, historical, and cultural factors associated with individual development, as applied to social work practice.
• SWK 5400 Field Instruction I The signature pedagogy of the Master of Social Work degree is the field experience.  In this experiential course, students will complete 200 hours of fieldwork, supervised by a professional social worker in a local social service agency. This will provide the student an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge in a practice setting. Emphasis is on developing generalist social work practice skills with individuals, families, groups, and organizations. The accompanying seminar provides a supportive environment for processing the field experience, and space for students to reflect on their knowledge, skills and abilities as they move from theoretical understanding to applied learning.
• SWK 5500 Social Work Research Methods This course is designed to introduce social science research methods in the context of social work practice. This foundational level course will encourage critical thinking skills that build on a liberal arts undergraduate education in science, social sciences, and the humanities. Emphasis will be placed on how research skills are integrated within social work practice, using an ethical, anti-oppressive framework. Specifically, this course will examine the relationship between theory and research, conceptualization of research questions and hypotheses, and elements of research design. Both qualitative and quantitative methodologies will be introduced as a means of building knowledge for practice.
• SWK 5600 Social Work Practice II: Groups, Organizations, and Communities This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively with diverse groups and communities in a variety of settings. The course will cover group work theories and interventions, as well as social justice principles for community organizing. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of systems of oppression and discrimination on groups and communities and learning how to address these issues in organizational practice settings. Students will develop skills in culturally responsive practice, including understanding and valuing the unique perspectives and experiences of group members and community members.
• SWK 5700 Social Work Policy Analysis and Advocacy This course examines the history of social welfare policy in the United States and analyzes the values and assumptions that form the foundation of social welfare policies and programs. This course introduces students to the key social policies and programs that shape current social work practice while providing a historical context for how they came to be. 
• SWK 5800 Psychopathology This course provides an in-depth exploration of psychopathology with a focus on understanding the complex interplay of biological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social factors that influence mental health. Grounded in trauma-informed practice and utilizing the DSM-5 as a guide, students will examine how various influences converge to impact individuals' mental health trajectories.
• SWK 5900 Field Instruction II This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively with diverse groups and communities in a variety of settings. The course will cover group work theories and interventions, as well as social justice principles for community organizing. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of systems of oppression and discrimination on groups and communities and learning how to address these issues in organizational practice settings, via 200 hours of fieldwork. Students will develop skills in culturally responsive practice, including understanding and valuing the unique perspectives and experiences of group members and community members.
• SWK 6000 Advanced Practice with Individuals & Families This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of settings. The course covers advanced practice theories, interventions, and ethical considerations specific to working with individuals and families. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the impact of systems of oppression and discrimination on individuals, couples, and families and learning how to address these issues in practice. Students will also develop skills in culturally responsive practice, including understanding the unique perspectives and experiences of clients. The course will also cover self-care and self-awareness for the social worker.
• SWK 6100 Advanced Practice with Groups This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to work effectively with diverse groups in a variety of settings. The course will cover advanced group work theories and interventions, as well as ethical considerations and cultural responsiveness in group practice. Students will learn how to design, facilitate, and evaluate group work, and will also examine the impact of systems of oppression on individuals and groups. Emphasis will be placed on the process of forming, developing, and terminating groups and the importance of self-care and self-awareness in group work practice.
• SWK 6200 Trauma Theory in Practice This course will present the current conceptualizations of trauma and trauma-informed care from an ecological perspective. Emphasis is placed on the biology and neuroscience of stress and trauma, the effects of trauma on populations at-risk and the evolving conceptualization of social work’s role in the treatment and prevention of stress and trauma. Acquisition of diagnostic skills will be emphasized throughout the course as well as the knowledgeable application of “trauma-informed care” to all levels of advanced practice. Students will consider issues such as vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue, and burn-out, exploring approaches to self-care and promotion of wellness. Through case presentations, written work, and class discussions students are encouraged to use their experiences in the field to deepen their understanding of course content.
• SWK 6000 Level Electives Students will be able to choose a minimum of two elective courses during their specialized curriculum. These courses will allow students a chance to explore theoretical perspectives more deeply, populations of interest, practice areas, or social problems. Exemplar courses include Race-Based Trauma, Poverty in the United States, Mental Health Practice, Crisis Intervention, School Social Work, and Family Practice in Social Work.
• SWK 6300 Field Instruction III In this third experiential course, students will complete an advanced generalist placement in a micro, macro and/or mezzo environment.  This second field placement, supervised by a professional social worker in a local agency, will provide the student an opportunity to further apply advanced knowledge to practice through the course of 250 required field hours. Students will engage in specialized practice in a local social service setting. Emphasis is on furthering skills of advocacy, and leadership in social work practice.  
• SWK 6400 Advanced Practice with Organizations & Communities This course explores contemporary theories, models, and practices for leadership in human service organizations, emphasizing skills in team building, program design and implementation, development and funding, organizational change and genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The community practice dimensions of this course engage students in examining theory, methods, and strategies for community practice within complex political and economic environments, emphasizing participatory action and anti-racist, anti-oppressive practice.
• SWK 6500 Evaluation for Advanced Social Work Practice This course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate their practice and the programs in which they work. Students will develop evaluation skills which can be used as practical tools for social change by improving the quality of individual level and social programming. In acquiring these skills, in the context of their field placement, students will: a) explore ethical responsibilities associated with evaluating practice; b) apply research methods to conceptualize and measure problems and goals; c) implement research design and methods of evaluation; d) conduct data analyses and interpret results; and e) report their findings.
• SWK 6600 Leadership for Advanced Social Work Practice   This integrative seminar provides students with the knowledge and skills to be leaders in their practice environments and communities. Students will learn models and theories related to general supervision, power, and authority in public and nonprofit organizations. The course will explore the influence of politics, economics, technology, and socio-cultural factors within supervisory practice, across multiple contexts. Students will explore social work leadership ethics and deepen their understanding of caring for self and others. A capstone experience, this course will also support students in their preparation for employment and licensure.
• SWK 6700 Field Instruction IV The signature pedagogy of the Social Work degree is the field experience.  In this fourth experiential course, students will continue an advanced generalist placement in a micro, macro and/or mezzo environment, supervised by a professional social worker in a local agency. This will provide the student an opportunity to further deepen and apply advanced knowledge to practice through 250 required hours of field work. Emphasis is on deepening skills of advocacy, leadership and social work practice in a specialized setting. Additional attention is given to preparing students for post-program destinations.

Accreditation Status add

The Belmont University MSW program is currently in pre-candidacy for accreditation by the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Board of Accreditation (BOA). A program that has attained pre-candidacy status has not yet been reviewed by the BOA nor verified to be compliant with the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS). Students that are admitted to pre-candidate programs in the fall (or later) of the academic year in which the program is granted candidacy status will be retroactively recognized as graduates from a CSWE-BOA accredited program as long as the program attains initial accreditation. Review our program’s pre-candidacy status in CSWE’s Directory of Accredited Programs. For more information about social work accreditation, contact CSWE’s Department of Social Work Accreditation.

Social Work Licensure add

Once accredited by the Council on Social Work Education , those earning a Master’s degree in Social Work from Belmont University have met the first of several steps needed to attain state licensure to practice social work at the Master’s level. It is important to note that state licensure is a separate process from that of attaining your master’s degree and requires additional criteria. For example, Tennessee requires that additional examinations be taken. State licensure is handled through state boards and not through Belmont University. Students are advised to seek licensure information through the requisite state Department of Health’s Social Work Licensure Board. Belmont’s faculty and staff are a resource for Belmont MSW graduates seeking licensure but are the licensing authority.

Note that a felony conviction may affect a graduate's ability to be eligible to take the national certification examination or obtain state licensure.

May i apply while i am still in the process of completing my undergraduate degree add.

Yes! You are welcome to apply in the year before you graduate. All credits associated with your bachelor's degree must be completed before June 1 and your final transcript sent to Belmont.

Do I need to have a bachelor’s degree in social work? add

No, students do no need an undergraduate degree in social work to apply. We do not require a specific major to apply for the MSW. Common majors include psychology, child and family studies, sociology, public policy, and other social science disciplines.

Do you offer Advanced Standing? add

Yes, we will begin enrolling for Advanced Standing in September 2026.

Is this program online? add

No, the Belmont MSW is a face-to-face program. However, our classes are scheduled such that students will not be on campus more than two days a week.

Can I complete my internship/field hours where I work? add

Yes! Students working in a social work setting may be eligible to complete their internship at their place of employment during their work hours.

Is a specific major or courses required? add

No, there is not a specific major, or specific courses required. It is suggested that students have successfully completed approximately 18 credit hours of courses such as psychology, sociology, statistics, biology, anthropology, economics, history, political science, government, and/or languages.

I am not a Tennessee Resident may I still apply? add

Belmont University makes no distinction between in-state and out-of-state students for admission or tuition purposes, and all are welcome to apply.

Do you require an interview? add

No, however, the faculty reserves the right to request an introductory interview to ensure we are able to fully evaluate your application for admission. Additionally, information sessions and campus preview days will be scheduled throughout the year to offer students an opportunity to visit Belmont and learn more about the MSW and School of Social Work in person!

How long is the program and how many credit hours are required? add

The traditional program is 60 credit hours (5 classes a semester for four semesters). The Advanced Standing program is 30 credit hours (5 classes a semester for two semesters). The Advanced Standing program will begin accepting applications in September 2025.  

Can I go part-time? add

Yes, there is a part-time option enrolling now. Please reach out to your admissions counselor for further information.

When do classes meet? add

Students will attend class no more than two days a week throughout the program. Students in Year 1 of the program will complete approximately 13 hours a week of field work outside of class. Students in Year 2 of the program will complete approximately 16 hours a week of field work.

Do you accept transfer credit? add

Yes! Students with undergraduate course credit from a CSWE-accredited baccalaureate social work program – earned within the last seven years – are entitled to have generalist-equivalent course credit evaluated for waiver, regardless of the undergraduate degree they hold, or their ability to enter the advanced standing program. Applicants requesting a transfer of credits must also meet specific criteria and provide additional documentation. Institutional policy holds graduate applicants can request the transfer of up to 15 graduate credit hours, while advanced standing transfer applicants can request up to 9 credits.
