Can I get health insurance as an international college student?

Health insurance is a major concern for higher education students in the United States. Most colleges provide some form of health insurance through the university. Some colleges extend employee health insurance to PhD students who teach. Joining the faculty is one of the best ways to get health insurance. If that’s not an option, there should be other ways to acquire affordable health insurance. Research assistantships can also provide insurance.

What colleges have the most international students?

What majors are popular with students of other nationalities.

  • aerospace engineering
  • petroleum engineering
  • environmental engineering.
  • social sciences
  • biological sciences
  • data science,
  • fine and applied arts .

Psychology, including clinical psychology, and developmental psychology are also popular.

What is the best way to find financial aid for my degree?

While the scholarships we featured here are outstanding, there are many other scholarships out there. Check with any organizations you’re part of. They include:

  • a religious organization
  • a political organization
  • a corporation

Many offer financial aid opportunities. Additionally, if you are already a student, see if there are any programs in the U.S. that have a partnership with your school. With this article we tried to focus on generally available third party scholarships. Many colleges have specific financial aid only for students at their school. You should check with all the colleges you are interested in, especially those with high percentages of foreign students.

Check with your professional organization, if you have one, for scholarships available through your organization. They may also know of very niche scholarships that you might qualify for. The scholarships we featured here are mostly available through U.S. and international organizations. If you live in a developing country, your government may have scholarships designed to help future leaders study abroad. Regardless of your country’s economic development status, you should check with your government if your field is rare or has a shortage. Governments will often use scholarships as incentives to get people to major in sectors short on labor.

Another thing to keep in mind is that PhD fellowships and scholarships can be incredibly granular. Sometimes requirements become so narrow as to specify specific research topics, like artificial intelligence or human origins, to name a couple we’ve seen researching this article. Keep in mind that a great research proposal can go a long way toward securing you grants and fellowships.

Is it feasible for the average person to study abroad?

It’s easier and more common for graduate students to study abroad. This is because graduate students tend to either have more money, or their programs are shorter than those of undergraduate students. Whether or not it’s a good option for you to study abroad will depend on several factors.

First and foremost is money. It’s just more expensive to study abroad than it is at home. Even if you earn full scholarships or fellowships, it can still be financially taxing to study abroad.

You also have to be careful about your visa. Student visas might limit your ability to work and pay for living expenses while studying abroad. While the international scholarships we feature here are incredible, they are the best of the best and competition is fierce.

The ongoing public health crisis isn’t helping people who want to study abroad either.

So there are many challenges if you want to earn your PhD degree in another country. However, if you really feel your best choice is to study abroad, and you can get the aid you need to make it happen, it can be the experience of a lifetime and great for your career.

And here’s a tip. If you want the best weather, pick a California school.

Securing a fully funded PhD in the USA can benefit many international students. Here are some practical tips to help you apply for scholarships for doctoral programs in the USA:

Start your research at least 12 to 18 months before the academic year you plan to attend. Early preparation gives you ample time to explore various scholarship opportunities and understand their requirements.

  • Identify your priorities : Reflect on why you want to study in the USA and what your long-term goals are. This will help you find programs and scholarships aligning with your career objectives and interests.
  • Find the right fit : Find universities matching your academic and research interests. Don’t just focus on the school’s reputation; consider the faculty, research facilities, and the overall environment.
  • Accredited institutions : Ensure that the universities you apply to are certified by the Student Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The Department of Homeland Security's Study in the States website has a searchable list of certified schools.
  • Cost of living : Understand that living costs vary across the USA. Research the cost of living in your prospective universities' areas.
  • Budget planning : Assess your financial situation and estimate how much you can spend on your education and living expenses. This will help you identify how much scholarship funding you need.
  • Institutional aid : Many universities offer scholarships specifically for international students. Look for programs that offer tuition waivers, research assistantships, teaching assistantships, and fellowships.

  • Standardized tests : Ensure you take any required standardized tests (such as the GRE or TOEFL) well in advance and route the results to your chosen institutions.
  • Submit early : Scholarship application deadlines often align with admission deadlines. To ensure your applications are considered, submit them well before the deadlines.
  • Comprehensive applications : Each application should be meticulously prepared, highlighting your strengths and how they align with the scholarship criteria.
  • Student visa : Once accepted, you must apply for the appropriate student visa (F, J, or M). Information on visa applications can be found on the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Consular Affairs website and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Study in the States.
  • Pre-departure preparation : Attend a pre-departure orientation organized by EducationUSA to help you prepare for life in the USA. These sessions cover cultural differences, academic expectations, and practical tips for adjusting to a new environment.

How Can I Find Scholarships for International Students?

There are a few effective search strategies that international students can use to easily identify scholarships. It’s best to avoid general search terms, such as “scholarship,” in search engines. Instead, use more targeted search terms:

  • [Your home country] international scholarship U.S.
  • International scholarship U.S. [your major].
  • Developing countries international scholarship U.S. college.

Mentioning your home country in your searches will save you time, as many programs only accept students from specific nations, and you don’t want to get stuck sorting through those.

Next, organize your search results in a spreadsheet that includes your main parameters, such as application due date, relevance for your major, and potential financial award . That way, you can easily sort your scholarship options by the metrics that you care about.

Where Should I Look for Full Scholarships for International Students in the U.S.A.?

You can continue your search for scholarships for international students in the U.S.A. with online scholarship databases. Some helpful databases include:

  • IIE Funding for U.S. Study
  • InternationalScholarships.com
  • International Education Financial Aid

You can also use general scholarship databases to specifically filter and apply for international scholarships. Some examples include:

  • Scholarships.com
  • College Board

Finally, check out the nearest U.S. embassy or nearby higher education institutions. Those are good places to find expert advice or information about international scholarship programs.

How Can I Get a Scholarship as an International Student?

Planning is key to securing scholarships. Once you organize your options in a spreadsheet that you can easily sort, begin methodically applying to each of them, starting with the earliest deadlines. You can streamline this process by using the Common App tool. This helpful resource allows you to send the same application to multiple schools at once, and it has an option for applying to scholarships, too.

Most scholarship applications require a few key pieces of information, including your transcripts, an essay, and letters of recommendation . In the case of international scholarship applications, you will need to provide proof of your visa, too. A resume or proof of work in a particular industry may also be necessary.

Make your application stand out by writing a thoughtful, earnest personal essay. Use the space to tell your story honestly while emphasizing the hurdles you face as an international learner, and be sure to outline your goals.

Pursuing a PhD can be rewarding, but it often comes with the challenge of securing adequate funding, especially for international students. This blog will explore funding options for those seeking to continue their academic pursuits abroad. By understanding the opportunities available, you can make informed decisions that will help you achieve your educational goals without breaking the bank.

Understanding the Costs of a PhD

Before diving into the various funding avenues, it’s essential to understand the costs of pursuing a PhD. The expenses can vary significantly depending on the university and the country you choose to study. Beyond tuition fees, which can be substantial, we should also consider living costs, research expenses, and travel fees. It’s advisable to thoroughly research these elements as they contribute to the financial undertaking.

Another factor to consider is the unforeseen expenses of being an international student. These may include health insurance, student fees, and costs related to obtaining visas. Creating a comprehensive budget that reflects all potential costs is wise, providing a roadmap for your financial planning. Knowing exactly what you’re up against can help alleviate some stress when seeking PhD funding.

Finally, understanding the concept of opportunity costs is crucial. Working on a PhD often means forgoing a full-time job, which could have provided a stable income. Factoring in lost wages can give you a more accurate understanding of the financial impact of pursuing a doctoral degree. Awareness of these costs can lead to better funding options tailored to your situation.

Types of PhD Funding Available

PhD funding can come from various sources, each with its benefits and drawbacks. The most common types include scholarships, grants, assistantships, and loans. Scholarships are typically awarded based on merit or financial need and can cover many tuition fees. They do not require repayment, making them an attractive option for many students.

Conversely, government bodies or foundations often provide grants and may be awarded based on specific research projects or academic achievements. Similar to scholarships, grants are usually need-based and do not require repayment. Understanding the differences between these types of funding is critical to maximizing your financial aid potential.

Assistantships can be especially beneficial for international students as they provide funding and valuable experience. Typically, students will work in teaching or research roles in exchange for a stipend or tuition waiver. These positions help cover living expenses and enhance your resume by providing professional experience in academia.

Lastly, loans may be necessary for some students. While they can provide immediate financial relief, it’s essential to understand the long-term implications of taking on debt. Be sure to look into private and governmental loan options, carefully comparing interest rates and repayment terms.

Scholarships and Grants for International Students</h3>

Scholarships and grants are fantastic ways to secure funding for your PhD studies without incurring debt. Many universities offer scholarships for international students to encourage diversity within their programs. These can range widely in value, from partial tuition coverage to total funding, including living expenses. To find the best options, check university websites and external scholarship databases.

In addition, many governments and private organizations also offer scholarships to promote education among international scholars. Programs such as the Fulbright Program or government-sponsored scholarships provide valuable funding opportunities. These often come with stringent requirements, so having all the necessary documentation is essential to increase your chances of being awarded the funds.

It’s also vital to understand the application process for these scholarships. This often entails submitting essays, recommendation letters, and detailed academic records. Crafting a powerful narrative around your educational journey and future goals can significantly impact your application. Don’t forget to follow instructions carefully, as even minor oversights can jeopardize your chances.

Research and Teaching Assistantships

Research and teaching assistantships offer an excellent funding solution that lets you gain critical classroom or research experience. Typically, these positions require you to work a set number of hours per week, often under the supervision of a faculty member. This collaboration helps alleviate some of your financial burdens and fosters mentorship relationships.

Research assistantships often involve specific projects where you’ll contribute to the faculty’s work. This can be incredibly fulfilling, allowing you to delve deeper into your study area while providing tangible contributions to ongoing research. Additionally, this experience can help build your professional network, which is invaluable for future academic or career opportunities.

On the other hand, teaching assistantships usually involve leading discussion groups, grading papers, or even lecturing. This is an excellent experience for anyone considering a future in academia, as it helps you develop valuable pedagogical skills. It can also improve your public speaking abilities — a notable asset for any career path!

However, balancing these responsibilities with your studies can be challenging. Time management becomes crucial to ensure that neither your academic nor assistantship responsibilities suffer. Still, with adequate planning, assistantships can significantly enrich your PhD experience.

Loans and Other Financial Aid Options

If scholarships, grants, and assistantships don’t fully cover your expenses, turning to loans may be inevitable. However, it’s essential to approach this option with caution. Research various loans available for international students, ensuring you understand the terms, interest rates, and repayment plans. Government and private loan programs are designed for students fleeing their home countries to pursue education abroad.

Before taking out a loan, evaluate how it fits into your financial picture. Consider creating a detailed budget that includes potential income from assistantships, expected living costs, and tuition fees. This can help you make informed decisions when borrowing significantly.

Additionally, explore other financial aid options that could complement loans. Some universities offer work-study programs, which allow you to work on campus while studying. This option can help you reduce expenses while gaining valuable skills and experiences.

Tips for Applying for PhD Funding

Applying for funding can seem daunting, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make the process smoother. Start by creating a list of potential funding sources that fit your research interests and funding needs. Prioritize them according to deadlines and eligibility criteria, and allow ample application time.

An important tip is to tailor your application for each funding source. Writing a generic statement can diminish your chances of standing out. Take time to demonstrate how your research fits into the goals and priorities of the funding organization, highlighting your unique perspectives as an international student.

Don’t hesitate to seek feedback on your applications. Reach out to Scholar Den experts. A second set of eyes can catch mistakes you may have overlooked and provide a fresh perspective on your narrative. Networking also helps; sometimes, learning from the experiences of others can guide you toward more effective strategies.

Resources for International Students

Numerous resources exist to aid international students in navigating the challenging terrain of PhD sch. University websites often have dedicated sections for graduate funding opportunities, which can provide a comprehensive overview of what’s available. Additionally, many universities have an international student office to guide you to specific funding prospects geared toward non-local students.

Outside university resources, organizations like scholarden.com offer valuable information regarding international student scholarships and funding. Their guidance can be beneficial in understanding the nuances of each option and any specific requirements for international students. You can also find online databases that aggregate various scholarship opportunities, making the search process more efficient.

Lastly, consider engaging with academic communities online. Websites, forums, and social media groups can provide insights and shared experiences from fellow international students who have successfully secured funding. Connecting with others in your situation can offer valuable funding information and emotional support as you navigate your academic journey.

Final Thoughts on PhD Scholarships for International Students

In conclusion, securing funding for your PhD as an international student may seem daunting, but many resources and strategies are available. Whether you explore scholarships, grants, assistantships, or loans, the key is to research and apply early. Finding suitable funding options lets you focus on your studies and enjoy your academic experience.

Postgraduate scholarships in USA

Scholarships are a vital source of funding for international students as well as home students studying their masters (MS) degree in the USA .

There are plenty of funding opportunities available if you know where to look – but you do need to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and the deadlines. Many scholarships to help fund MS fees will be for students from a specific country or studying a specific subject. Others will be merit-based for those who have a proven academic record in excellence.

It is important to research properly into what your university has to offer – and these scholarships should be flagged up on the fees and funding pages. You should also look into what scholarships are on offer from your home country’s government.

University scholarships and assistantships, as well as grants and scholarships specifically for foreign students, are some of the funding opportunities available for international students seeking a masters degree in the USA. Education USA is also a valuable resource for finding financial aid opportunities as well as advice for getting your study visa.

In this article, we’ll talk you through everything you need to know about how to obtain a scholarship in the USA.

Why apply for a scholarship in the USA?

The USA is a very popular place for international students to choose to study a graduate program and with good reason. It boasts plenty of world-leading universities featuring highly regarded faculty and cutting-edge laboratory facilities.

US universities offer students a campus-based, inclusive and active living environment – with an emphasis on societies and sports, as well as academic excellence. This makes them an excellent place to make friends, learn new activities and network with like-minded people.

Due to their popularity with international students, universities in America also offer their intake the opportunity to experience diverse cultures. Not only does this enrich your life experience, but it can also extend your network of friends and peers across the globe.

As well as offering a vibrant and diverse student lifestyle, US universities have exceptional student support services – so if you do find yourself feeling stressed or isolated when you arrive at your university as an international student, you can be sure that you will have somewhere to turn to.

Finally, the career opportunities that you could experience as a result of studying in the United States is second to none. US universities are known for their excellence links with nearby industries and companies and the student visa usually allows international students to remain in the country for at least one year after graduation. This can be extended to up to three years for STEM-subject graduates, this gives graduates plenty of time to embark on a career – and then take their new skills and work experience home.

What documents are required to apply for a USA scholarship?

To apply for a scholarship, you will need to supply some documents. These will probably be similar to many of the documents you had to supply when apply for your masters course in the United States [LINK TO APPLICATIONS ARTICLE], and will typically include:

  • Application form
  • Academic transcripts
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Financial circumstances
  • Passport / ID card

Each scholarship will have its own set of requirements and the information a particular university or organisation requests will vary. It's always recommended to carefully review the scholarship's application guidelines to ensure you have all the necessary documents and meet the eligibility requirements.

What types of scholarships are available in the USA for international students?

There are many different types of scholarships available in the USA – here are some of the main ones.

Merit-based scholarships – these are scholarships that are awarded to students who demonstrate academic excellence.

Needs-based scholarships – this funding is for students that can prove a strong financial need as a result of coming from a low-income home.

Country-specific scholarships – students from certain countries – especially from developing countries – are often offered funding for masters study at university.

Subject-specific scholarships  – funding is often available for those choosing to study certain subjects, this is often particularly the case with those wishing to study STEM subjects.

Government-funded scholarships – governments can fund their students to study masters degrees overseas, this can be done on the understanding that the students will then come back to their home country with their newly acquired skills and knowledge.

University scholarships – universities in the USA can offer scholarships to students to come and study at their institution, information about this will always be on their fees and funding pages.

Privately funded scholarships – it can be possible to find privately funded scholarship from companies, business or charities, in this case the student is likely to be required to work for the company for a period of time upon completion of their masters.

Full scholarships – this is the masters student’s dream! A full scholarship will cover tuition fees and include a living stipend.

Fully funded USA scholarships for international students

Fulbright scholarship usa.

Perhaps the most popular government-funded US scholarships for international students, the Fulbright Commission has 11 different postgraduate awards aimed at UK students wishing to study in the USA. EU citizens can also apply for funding through the Fulbright Commission office in their own country. So long as you have received a 2.1 in your first degree, even if you took it outside of the UK, you are eligible to apply for a postgraduate award. In terms of your course, it should be a full-time postgraduate program at an accredited university and you must attend the campus rather than studying online.

How to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship

The Fulbright website has very detailed information which can enable you to create a strong application; their online portal is a global system and so can be used by all international students, so long as they follow the country-specific instructions. The first step involves completing an application form, along with a personal statement (statement of purpose) outlining your research objectives and telling the committee about the kind of person you are, aside from your academic achievements.

What does the scholarship cover?

If you are successful, the basic Fulbright package will cover your tuition fees and a proportion of your living expenses in the US for one year. The exact amount will vary between states, depending on the cost of living as assessed by the US Department of State. Certain awards have other benefits, but these can depend on the funder involved and the student. Assuming you meet their requirements, you have as much chance as any other applicant of being accepted onto the program. Fulbright does not have a preference for particular alumni and actively works towards funding students from a variety of backgrounds. However, they are very strict about the minimum entry requirement of a 2.1 and aside from that, they do not offer awards to medical students.

Funding & Scholarship: Graduate Programs

Financial support for ph.d. students, all students admitted into our ph.d. program receive full financial support., this support includes tuition, fees, $1,004 in transportation and dental subsidies (as of ay24-25), and a cost-of-living stipend ($3655 per month in ay23-24 and $4083 per month before taxes in ay24-25)..

Support is independent of need provided a student remains in good academic standing and is making satisfactory progress towards his/her Ph.D. degree. Students are expected to complete their Ph.D. requirements in four to six years. Financial support takes several forms: fellowships, teaching fellowships, and research assistantships. Ordinarily, first-year Ph.D. students are supported with full fellowships so that they can devote their time to coursework.

For the classes entering in Fall 2024 and beyond : SEAS PhD students are expected to complete two sections of teaching in SEAS in their second year or spread across their second and third years. Both sections may be completed concurrently in a single course. Their research assistantship will be adjusted accordingly during the semester(s) in which they are teaching fellow (TF). The academic requirement for the PhD degree is one section of teaching in SEAS. The student and their research advisor may arrange to replace the second section of teaching with a research assistantship. Beyond the first year, when students are in a better position to teach and assist in research, support is ordinarily provided through research assistantships, or a combination of a teaching fellowship and a research assistantship. For more detailed information, please visit the following pages: GSAS Tuition and Fees  G SAS Financial Support for PhD Students

External financial support for Ph.D. students

Applicants and current students are encouraged and expected to apply for all non-Harvard scholarships for which they are eligible, especially those offered by the  National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program  and  National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG) .

Each year, many SEAS students secure fellowships from external agencies.  Should an incoming student be awarded and accept any fellowship external to Harvard, it is the expectation that the student will utilize these funds in the first year of study in place of Harvard funding.   In advanced (G2+) years in the graduate program, students with external fellowships are advised to have a discussion with their financial aid officers from Harvard Griffin GSAS and SEAS about how to best utilize the remaining years of funding based on their activities and academic requirements.

To ensure equitable treatment of all students, the coordination of external award benefits with a student’s existing funding package is determined by the Harvard Griffin GSAS financial aid officer in consultation with SEAS.

Currently, PhD students with external support are eligible for a SEAS-sponsored academic incentive.  PhD students who bring in open, competitive external fellowships that are equal to 50% or more of total their support (tuition/fees + stipend) will receive a supplemental award of $3,000 in the first year of the external fellowship.  PhD students who bring in open external competitive external fellowships that are not 50% or more of their total support and are at least $10,000 (tuition/fees + stipend or salary) will receive a supplemental award of $1,000.  The full $3,000 bonus may also be awarded in certain cases of multi-year fellowships depending on the total amount of support provided. This policy is subject to review and change.

Financial support for terminal masters students (M.E. & S.M.)

While financial aid is not available for master’s students in our M.E. and S.M. programs, there are a variety of funding opportunities available. Prospective students are encouraged to apply for independent grants and fellowships to fund their studies.  Information about tuition and fees can be found here . Students in our Computational Science & Engineering or Data Science programs-should visit this page and also may contact the  GSAS Financial Aid Office  to learn more.

Students in the  MS/MBA:Engineering Sciences program  are eligible to apply for need-based  HBS Fellowships  and student loans in both years of the program.
