Rapid bus to introduce bus lane in jalan klang lama on aug 15, rapid kl to offer 24-hour service for national day celebration.
PETALING JAYA: At only RM1 per trip, the Rapid Bus Demand Responsive Transit (DRT) van service has been gaining popularity among Klang Valley commuters who are drawn to its safe and quick direct transport to popular urban hotspots.
College student Syed Aidrus Syed Omar, 21, said that he found himself with more free time and money thanks to the punctual timing of the DRT drivers.

“I used to have to wait around 30 minutes at least to get a bus to college, but now I rarely have to wait even 10 minutes for the DRT van to pick me up.
“It’s also so much cheaper compared to taking ehailing while far less time-consuming, so I have more time daily to do whatever I want,” Syed Aidrus said, adding that he has been using DRT for over a month.
Front office executive Kenneth Raj, 54, described DRT as the best mashup of the affordability of public transport but with the convenience and speed of ehailing service.
“The interface is basically identical to e-hailing services, so it’s not only easy to navigate but also gives me the freedom of scheduling my ride whenever I want at a far cheaper price,” said Kenneth, who uses the DRT as part of his office commute.
Student Mirttika M. Velanthren, 19, said using the DRT has saved her a lot of money for her daily commute to university.
“It’s now so much faster to travel to class, and thanks to the My50 travel pass, I basically pay nothing to travel to class or to move around with my friends,” said Mirttika, who commutes from the Kelana Jaya LRT Line to the DRT.
A nearby business owner, Spencer Wee, 55, found himself spending significantly less time during his daily commute after switching over to the DRT.
“Not only is the waiting time for the DRT van just five to 10 minutes, but it now only takes about 15 minutes to get to my office during peak hours, compared to an hour before.
Weighing in, Assoc Prof Dr Law Teik Hua of the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Road Safety Research Centre said the DRT service complements existing public transit systems well.
“This bridges the gap between transit hubs and key destinations by offering flexible, on-demand transportation, thus making public transit more accessible and convenient for local residents.
“This flexibility can attract more users who might otherwise rely on private vehicles for those short trips, thus reducing congestion and promoting the use of public transport,” he said.
He also explained how expanding DRT further could help to address the constant traffic congestion issue faced by Klang Valley residents while also enhancing road safety.
“DRT vans are also operated by trained drivers who adhere to higher safety standards while essentially removing the complexities and distractions of personal driving, reducing the potential for distraction-related accidents,” he added.
However, Malaysian Road and Transportation Safety Association president Nik Mohd Salim Nik Mohd Salleh explained how the service alone is not enough to solve the country’s long-standing urban congestion issues.
“Any new future DRT routes must be based on proper surveys of population density and commuter travel frequency from highly trafficked areas using personal vehicles.
“We should also seriously consider the ease of access to public transport as a part of any future urban planning projects, rather than turning to reactive measures like DRT,” he said.

JOHOR BAHRU – The Summer School (SS), A Global Learning Experience in Malaysia (AGLEIM) 2024, organized by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM), has been successfully concluded. The program, which ran from July 29th to August 10th, saw participation from 23 students from Kookmin University (국민대학교 – KMU) in Seoul, South Korea, and 9 Buddies from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The 32 students came from various engineering disciplines, including mechanical, materials, electrical, and civil engineering.
The annual SS AGLEIM began in 2015. However, it was suspended in 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The program resumed in January 2023, and this year’s summer school occurred during the summer.
The two-week program included a mix of activities within lecture rooms and laboratories. At FKM, the students conducted experiments related to biomass, refrigeration, materials, and CAD/CAM analysis and submitted designs and lab exercises. They also visited the Marine Technology Centre (MTC) at FKM, which is the only hydrodynamic center in Malaysia, and the aerodynamics laboratory wind tunnel at FKM. During these visits, the staff performed demonstrations for the students, providing them with valuable learning experiences. These visits were enlightening for most of the students, including the Buddies from UTM. Following the visit to the MTC, students were treated to durians, giving them their first taste of the king of fruits.
The Summer School (SS) included research talks given by academics from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering (FKM) and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), including Assoc Prof. Dr. Yeong Che Fai. The talks were tailored to the background of the KMU participants. Afterwards, the students prepared PowerPoint presentations based on the talks, which were evaluated by the facilitators of the SS AGLEIM. This year, many of the KMU students are studying mechanical, electrical, and material engineering. Throughout the 2-week SS, three professors from KMU, Professor Dr. Hyunjin Lee (mechanical engineering), Professor Dr. Tae Joon Park (materials science & engineering), and Professor Dr. Chang Kook Oh (civil engineering), visited separately and stayed for a few days to be present throughout the program.
The students took part in various activities outside UTM. These included visiting a pineapple farm in Alor Bukit, Pekan Nenas, which is the Agrotechnology Park of the Malaysia Pineapple Industry Board (MPIB), Petronas Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC), and the city of Kuala Lumpur, where we stayed overnight. During the visit to the pineapple farm, students had the opportunity to plant pineapple crowns and participate in a pineapple arrangement contest.
Meanwhile, at the PIC, a petrochemical park, the students were taken around the complex, which spans around 6,242ha or about 300+ the size of a soccer field. It was an impressive experience both for the students and the academics who followed. This marked the first visit to the PIC by international students. Throughout the day trip, the visitors from UTM were treated to breakfast, lunch, and tea.
The SS AGLEIM is expected to continue as an annual program, thanks to the commitment of the committee members, Dr. Ummikalsum Abidin (program manager), Prof. Dr. Normah Mohd Ghazali (Advisor), Dr. Mohd Faisal Hasan, Dr. Muhammad Faiz Hilmi Rani, Dr. Desmond Chin Vui Sheng, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norhayati Ahmad, Dr. Wong Keng Yinn, and Assoc. Professor Dr. Mohd Fairus Mohd Yasin. The committee was assisted by the FKM teaching lab staff, Ms. Halimah A. Razak and Ms. Suriati Kasim.
