How to Present a PDF like a PowerPoint

With Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can present a regular PDF in similar fashion to a PowerPoint presentation.

Format presentation

• Under the "Edit" tab, click "Preferences".
• Under the "Full Screen Navigation" Section, you can loop the presentation by checking the "Loop after last page" option.
• You can also set the "speed" of the presentation with the "Advance every [ ] seconds" option.
• It is recommended to leave the "Escape key exits" option checked in order to quit the presentation early.

Present PDF

• Under the "View" tab, click "Full Screen Mode". This will start the presentation.
• In order to end the presentation before it's finished, press Esc

Step 1: Download and install MiniTool PDF Editor. Right-click your PDF file and choose Open with > MiniTool PDF Editor . As a result, when you full screen a PDF, the font may be smaller than when you make the PDF fit width.

What size should my slides be, 16:9 or 4:3?

Deciding on a slide format used to be easy when there was only one choice. Nowadays, you can choose between 4:3 format or 16:9. What do these numbers mean and which size should you choose for your presentations?

What the numbers mean

The above notation is called the “aspect ratio,” or the ratio of the width to the height of the slide. In the 4:3 aspect ratio, the dimensions are 1024 x 768 pixels (10.67″ x 8″); the height is 3/4 of the width. Back in the Ye Olde Days of PowerPoint, it was your only choice. Why? Because that’s the aspect ratio of actual slides, pictured above, television screens, and early computer monitors.

When high-definition screens came on the scene in the early 2000s, they were built in a 16:10 aspect ratio. But as more and more high-definition screens were manufactured, it became clear that screens with a 16:9 aspect ratio were cheaper to manufacture. So the 16:9 aspect ratio (1920 x 1080 pixels or 13.3″ x 7.5″) became the new standard.

What size should you choose?

From boardrooms to computer monitors to smartphone screens, 16:9 is the default screen aspect ratio so that’s the slide size I always go with. The 16:9 format gives you a lot of slide real estate to play around with! The legacy 4:3 aspect ratio, while still used, creates smaller slides and doesn’t look that great on newer screens.

How do you change an old 4:3 deck to the new 16:9 format?

Oh, this is super-fun to do and you’re a lucky duck if it becomes your job.

To resize your slides go to the Design tab on the ribbon and select Slide Size/Widescreen on the right side of the screen.

After you select the new size, this window will appear:

Now you’re faced with either everything on the slides being stretched out or squished to fill the space. Oh boy! Either way, after you make your selection you’ll need to go through the presentation slide by slide to ensure that everything looks good. This can be fairly straightforward if the creator of the presentation stayed within the template or a real pain in the rear if he/she didn’t. But do go through the deck to ensure that everything looks right.

If you’re a production artist that charges by the hour, reformatting an organization’s slides from 4:3 to 16:9 could be a nice little gig for you!

Other slide sizes for special events

Now, the 16:9 format is great for everyday use but what if you’re designing a presentation for an event? Last year, I was designing slides for a corporate conference where the setup included multiple, massive screens. For that event, the slides measured 52″ x 17″ and had a “leave this space blank” area on the bottom. Each event is different, so if you’re working on slides like these you need to become friends with the AV folks and find out what size slides they recommend for optimal viewing on that particular setup. The last thing you want to see on a gigantic stage are distorted graphics!

Bottom line

Unless you’re told otherwise, use the 16:9 format. You get a lot more space on each slide for your visuals and it’s really the way things are going.

Choosing PowerPoint slide size is a key part of your presentation setup. It ensures that your content looks its best in the way that you want to share it. 

You might present PowerPoint presentations on a variety of screens, such as:

• laptop screens
• conference room projectors
• iPads and tablets
• widescreen, large format displays

Each of these displays has a different shape or aspect ratio. The aspect ratio is a measure that describes the width versus height of a screen. The same PowerPoint slides will appear differently on each device. That's because the aspect ratio can vary. 

This brings us to the first step. Begin by choosing a size for PPT slide layouts by deciding what device your slides are most likely to appear on. This drives the slide size in PPT that you’ll want to use for best results. 

The specific setting depends on the device you'll use. Here are rules of thumb for which one to choose:

These aren't the only options, of course. PowerPoint slide size change features like Letter Paper or Ledger Paper are also available. These are meant for printed slides, so that they fit perfectly on different sizes of paper.

How to Change the Size of Your PowerPoint 

We've learned the basic rules for slide size in PPT. Now, let's put this knowledge to work. Read on to learn how PowerPoint slide size change works. We'll work through it step-by-step. In moments, you'll know how to change slide size in PPT.

1.  How to Change the Size of PowerPoint Slides

You've chosen the screen you'll present on. And you've chosen the right size for your PowerPoint presentation. Now, it's time to change your PowerPoint file to match.

Click on the  Design  tab on PowerPoint's ribbon. The available options will change on the ribbon. Find the  Customize  section on the ribbon and click on the  Slide Size  icon. 

A drop-down menu opens with several options. Click on Custom Slide Size  to open the Slide size menu and change your presentation's dimensions.

The Slide Size  menu opens, and now we can change the PPT slide size using the dropdown options.

It may not always be possible to choose the perfect size for your presentation. If you send and share your presentation, then you can't control the device that your audience will open your presentation on. 

You can optimize the presentation for most viewers. Let’s look at the process for PowerPoint changing slide size.

2. Setting Slide Size in PPT (Quickly and Easily)

Let's see how to PPT change slide size. Start by clicking on the drop-down box under the Slides sized for: option. The slide size in PPT you choose should be based upon the screen it'll appear on.

There are several choices on this drop-down menu. The most common choices that I use are On-screen Show (4:3) , On-screen Show (16:9) , and On-screen Show (16:10).  Think of these as the choices for PPT size of slides.

I use each of these settings often. That's because they match the most common devices PowerPoint presentations are shown on. Refer to our handy table earlier in the tutorial to decide which to use. 

After you select a slide size in PPT, press OK on this menu. PowerPoint will show a new menu that gives you a choice of how to change slide size in PPT. Let's take a closer look at which PPT change slide size option will be right for you.

PowerPoint Slide Settings: "Maximize" Versus "Ensure Fit"

When we size for PPT slides, PowerPoint presents us with two unique options. These are drastically differing options for changing PowerPoint slide size. We already have content on our slide, so it makes sense that we need to think about how to handle changing the slide.

The menu shows two options for PPT change slide size:

• Ensure Fit 

Choose one of these PPT size of slide options. They've got different approaches for PowerPoint slide size changes.

• Choosing  Maximize zooms in on the slide so that the content fills the slide. The downside to this approach is that some content may be clipped off if you've got elements on the slides' edge.
• Ensure fit makes sure that everything stays on the slide after you adjust the slide size in PPT. But it might leave horizontal bars above and below your content.

When you use a PowerPoint slide size change, give your presentation a thorough look. This is to make sure the content hasn't been altered after the PPT change slide size.

I typically choose to Maximize Slides . But it might take some re-working of the slides to fit properly. Learning how to change slide size in PPT requires reviewing your deck after this adjustment.

When to Use Special Case Sizes

The Slide Size options window can change your presentation size for practically any situation.

Imagine that presentation will be viewed on a portrait orientation device. Portrait orientation implies that a screen is taller than it's wide. Maybe the viewer is viewing it on a tablet in portrait mode, or on a monitor that's rotated in portrait mode.

To change a PowerPoint presentation to Portrait orientation, change the  Slides  option to  Portrait  as shown above.

You may not use these options often but remember that they exist. PowerPoint truly accommodates. 

3. Remember to Test

The success of a presentation comes down to the preparation behind it. Giving a presentation to an audience is daunting. But doing a " dry run " (practice presentation) reduces surprises.

This is especially key when you've changed PowerPoint slide size.  The PowerPoint slide size may make unexpected adjustments. They're easy to correct, but you can't fix them until you find them! You never want to first see issues in the real production.

Doing a dry run of your presentation will ensure two things: 

• That you've got all the cables and connections you need to display your presentation. 
• It's a great time to compare the dimensions of your file to the screen you'll use. That way, you can re-work your slides dimensions as needed. You can also rearrange content in case you find something out of place. 

Don't forget to include testing your PowerPoint file on the display you'll use for your pitch. It's another variable you can control for while preparing. This helps reduce the uncertainty of your presentation.

1. Edit the PowerPoint Dimensions First

Earlier in this tutorial, you worked with PowerPoint slide dimensions. But the most important part of doing so is the order of your steps. 

Make sure your first step is  Design > Slide Size.  When you set the size of your PPT as soon as you open the presentation, you won't clip or stretch your slides.

This is the best way to avoid re-work while working with PowerPoint slide sizes. Set your PowerPoint dimensions first!

2. Use the PowerPoint Rulers

Many presenters (myself included) use PowerPoint to create printed, products too. And the size of your PowerPoint slide  really  matters when you're trying to fit them to a printed page.

That's why it helps to check your PPT slide size with rulers (in inches.) To view them, go to the  View > Ruler  menu option.

3. Edit the Slide Master

Slide masters control several slide designs at the same time. Instead of setting layouts and PPT dimensions on each slide, consider editing the slide. Set the PPT slide size and dimension on the master on the  View > Slide Master  menu.

4. Simulate a Preview

Earlier in this tutorial, I recommended checking your presentation as a rehearsal. Ideally, you check your PowerPoint slide size on the exact display you'll use for the real thing.

Unfortunately, you won't always have the option to rehearse in the presentation room. But you can check it on your computer screen. You can preview your PowerPoint presentation and see how it uses the screen real estate.

Go to the Slide Show > From Beginning menu option to preview your presentation. Then, review if you can see any bars or lines on your screen. 

Most computer screens are 16:9 or 16:10. If you know your final screen has the same dimensions, this is a good check for PowerPoint dimensions.

5. Use Slide Layouts

You shouldn't have to set the PowerPoint slide size on each slide. You can set the dimensions of your PowerPoint presentation, but the presentation slide size matters too. Set the PowerPoint slide size with layouts that position elements perfectly.

In a template like The X Note , every slide layout carefully considers the size of the PPT. Use a layout for the size of PowerPoint slides on the  Home > Layout menu.

Use the Layout  drop-down to select the dimensions of your PowerPoint slide.

Resize Powerpoint slide to fit content (and safe as PDF without white margins)

I'm using Powerpoint to create my drawings. When using the normal slide size, there is some white area around the graphics. In Visio, one could crop the page to fit the margins of the contained graphics. How is this possible in powerpoint? Meaning, that the boundingbox of the contained objects is the size of the slide.

Long Motivation

Powerpoint got better the last years. Especially when handling figures, it even superseeds Microsoft Visio in some cases. Therefore, Powerpoint got more and more the tool of choice for creating diagrams. Even more complex diagrams with more than 10 shapes are easily possible.

When using the diagrams in a scientific publication, e.g., with LaTeX , the size of the diagrams are typically not following the usual dimensions of a powerpoint slide, but have dimensions fitting to the paper. Typically, the height is different from the typical height of a powerpoint slide.

I do not take a screenshot, because a screenshot is raster graphics. I do a PDF export as the PDF keeps the vector information. See for instance Best way to describe vector vs raster for a discussion, why vector graphics is useful.

The intended workflow is:

• Create diagram in PowerPoint
• Crop diagram
• Save diagram as PDF
• Use \includegraphics{diagram.pdf} in LaTeX

Current workflow:

Alternative a: replace step 2 with following sequence:.

• Mark all shapes
• Cut all shapes
• Change slide size
• Paste all shapes
• If there is some border mismatch, goto 2

Alternative B: insert step 3a:

• Open PDF in Acrobat Professional
• Use the page cropping tool of Acrobat

I know that PDF Scissors can also be used, but this is still manual work.

Regarding Alternative A: At each minor change of the diagram, I don't have to adjust the slide borders. If I do a major change, I might have to adjust the borders manually.

Regarding Alternative B: I have to do the cropping each time, I change the figure

There is also Alternative C, where I use the trim feature of the LaTeX graphicx package. However, at each major change of the slide, I have to guess the correct values, which makes this alternative similar to Alternative A.

Related Work

I found How to resize slide dimensions without resizing any objects on the slide? and the answer by JarynPL seems to be promising. Possibly, his macro has to be modified "only". If there is no definitive solution, I'll do it for myself and post it here.

Based on what you explained:

A. What you request is not possible in the PowerPoint by simple command somewhere on toolbar because main purpose of the PowerPoint is elsewhere.

B. It is possible to create macro using VBA programming. Programmatically

• Iterate over all shapes and calculate top, left, bottom and right edge of all (= of entire drawing).
• Move every shape (set its Left and Top properties) so that center of the entire drawing (of group of shapes) will become the center of the slide. Reason: I can see that size change is made in relation to the center of the slide, so center your stuff before slide resizing.
• Set slide size to width and height calculated from values collected in step 1.

Based on your StackOverflow profile, I can see you are a programmer so if you really need this feature, it shouldn't be so difficult for you to put it together and save a lot of time in future on resizing of slides.

Shapes are in collection ActivePresentation.Slides(1).Shapes (use For Each ... Next ). You can find a ton of examples – keyword is vba, e.g. vba powerpoint resize slide or vba powerpoint iterate shapes .

VBA code editor is reachable using Alt + F11 . In editor, object model can be studied using F2 – object inspector. Every object is well-documented, press help icon in object inspector. Store your macro in the presentation and save your file as type PowerPoint macro-enabled presentation or as PowerPoint macro-enabled template . If you get stuck, first search and then feel free to ask at the StackOverflow. VBA coding is relatively trivial. It has couple of oddities (do not use parenthesis on procedure call, only in function call; element indexes in collections start at 1), but they are quite bearable.

You can install the python module https://github.com/abarker/pdfCropMargins and execute the following batch script:

This will crop all files of the folder containing the batch script.

And with the following batch script, you can just drang&drop the exported .pdf onto the .bat file.

There is now a right-click menu where you can save every shape as a separate picture.

Your texlive suite should have a pdfcrop tool that should crop your exported pdf automatically .

Adobe Acrobat enables you to view a PDF document in full screen view. The full screen view is useful when you are reading an online document or making a presentation using a PDF document. In the full screen view only the pages of the document are displayed with items such as the window controls, toolbars, the title bar, the status bar, and the menu bar hidden. You can also set various preferences for the full screen view such as automatically advancing a page after a specified time duration thereby creating a slide show effect.

Things You Should Know

• Go to View > Full Screen View . You can also use the shortcut Ctrl + L in Acrobat. [1] X Research source
• To set your preferences to always choose full screen view, go to Edit > Preferences > Full Screen .
• Use Ctrl + L to exit full screen mode. You can also check the Escape key exits box in Preferences to use the ESC key to exit.

• PDF Annotator

Full Screen Mode Introduction

PDF Annotator's Full Screen Mode is an excellent way to display your presentation to an audience, from a small conference room meeting to an auditorium presentation full of people.

Full Screen Mode gives you a clean, easy to navigate presentation screen, and yet still enables access to important annotation and markup tools.

Opening Full Screen Mode

To get into Full Screen Mode, click the Full Screen button on the toolbar, as shown in the screen shot below, or press Ctrl+L .

Opening and Navigating Documents

Once you entered Full Screen Mode, PDF Annotator will stretch over your complete screen.

You will find a special PDF Annotator toolbar on the left, the Full Screen Toolbar .

The upper most button containing the red PDF Annotator logo gives you access to the Full Screen Menu . If you already had a file open when you switched into Full Screen Mode, that document will be displayed. Otherwise, the Full Screen Menu will automatically pop up.

On the Full Screen Menu , there are options to create a New Document , to Open an existing file, or to select one of your Recently Used Documents from the list on the right.

Let's go ahead and open a PDF presentation that we have prepared, and that we want to mark up and present using PDF Annotator.

Once you opened the PDF presentation, it will display expanding to the full screen size.

You can now use the scroll bar on the right to navigate through the document, or the Arrow buttons on the bottom part of the toolbar to page up and page down .

The button between the arrow buttons displays the current page number .

Tool Buttons

Looking at the upper half of the toolbar you can see a range of tool buttons .

Click the red pen tool button to switch to the red pen, and try adding some markup to your document.

This way you can live markup the document in front of your audience, point out important parts on a slide, or fill in details, additional information, or new content!

Let's switch to another tool, like the magenta marker tool to point out something important on the PDF slide.

Maybe you want to use a different color?

You can quickly change the properties of the currently selected tool by clicking the active tool button one more time !

This will open the properties popup , where you can select from a range of pen widths , colors and more tool properties . The number of properties available depends on the kind of tool selected (i.e. pen, marker, text, stamp, ...).

Clicking the Favorites icon (the heart symbol) on the popup will switch to the tool favorites defined in the Toolbox in regular mode. Clicking the gear icon will take you back to the properties.

Click the tool button again, or click anywhere out of the properties popup to close the popup and start annotating with the newly configured tool.

Saving Your Work

You can always save your changes to your document by clicking the Save button on the Full Screen Toolbar, which is the second button from the top (the first one after the Menu button).

View Options

PDF Annotator knows four different Page Layouts when displaying documents:

• One Page - Continuous
• Two Pages - Continuous

If you want to learn more about page layouts, please refer to our article on Page Layouts .

In the screen shots above, PDF Annotator was set to display one page at a time. Scrolling down always switched completely to the next page, you never see two pages at the same time.

If you do want to see two pages at the same time, like the bottom part of the current page, and the top of the next page, you can switch from One Page layout to One Page - Continuous layout.

To switch between page layouts, click the Zoom button on the Full Screen Toolbar.

There you find a row of four buttons representing the four Page Layout options available.

Please note that you can also switch to the Zoom tool, or switch to Fit to Width or Fit to Size mode within this popup menu.

Switch to One Page - Continuous to see the new page layout. You can now see the bottom of the current page, and the top of the next page at the same time.

You can still use the Page up and Page down buttons to navigate.

To get an overview of all the pages in your document, click the Page Number button between the arrow buttons.

This will open a sidebar showing small previews of all the pages in your document ( page thumbnails ).

You can click a page thumbnail to jump to that page.

Additional commands are available by right clicking on a page thumbnail.

If your document contains Bookmarks , you can switch to the bookmarks view by clicking the bookmarks icon on the top.

Clicking a bookmark jumps to the appropriate position in the document.

To close this sidebar again, just click the page number button once again, or click the Close button ( X ) on the top right of the sidebar.

Full Screen Settings

You probably already noticed the Settings button on the bottom of the Full Screen Toolbar, the button with the gear icon.

Let's first right click the Settings button to reveal another popup menu.

On this right-click popup, you can find commands to Reset , Save and Load the Full Screen configuration. We will not handle these options in this article in more detail, but in the next steps, we will customize the buttons in the Full Screen Toolbar, and using these commands here, you can reset all customizations to the factory settings, or save your Full Screen Toolbar settings (as a backup, to share them with a co-worker, or to move them to another device). The Load command will load the customizations you previously saved.

We will look at the first item on this menu, Customize , in a moment.

But for now, let's click the Settings... button.

The Settings button opens PDF Annotator's well known Settings window.

Here you can customize the appearance of the Full Screen Toolbar. In general, we recommend to stay with the defaults here, unless you have a good reason to change something. In our example, though, we want to switch the Button size to a smaller one.

The reason is, that for better visibility, we have set our demo computer to a very small screen resolution. This results in the buttons on the Full Screen Toolbar being really huge, probably way bigger than on your own screen.

So, we're going to decrease their size here a little bit - but you don't essentially have to do the same . In fact, we would only recommend decreasing the button size if your screen resolution is as small as ours, and the buttons appear as huge as in the screen shots above.

After closing the Settings window with OK , we're back in Full Screen Mode.

Action Buttons

Let's work up through the buttons in the lower part of the Full Screen Toolbar, and click the Expand button above the Zoom button.

The Expand button brings up a line of additional buttons, called Action Buttons .

Contrary to the Tool Buttons in the upper half of the toolbar, Action Buttons don't hold tools, but commands or options.

For example, from top to bottom in the screen shot above, we have:

• The Draw with Finger option, which toggles the ability to draw with the finger instead of panning with the finger (this option is only availabe on touch enabled devices).
• The Select Tool to select annotations added using any annotation tool. This can also be used as a pointer , that can be seen by the audience way better than, for example, the tip of the pen tool.
• The Eraser Tool to erase annotations.
• The Pan Tool to navigate on the page.
• The Undo Command to undo the last step.

If this list of Action Buttons does not yet hold the options you need most, no worries! We will now show you how to customize these buttons.

Full Screen Customization

In order to change the Tool Buttons and Action Buttons behaviour, we need to switch PDF Annotator into Customization Mode .

To switch into Customization Mode , do a regular left click on the Settings button on the bottom left (the gear icon).

As you noticed, this changed the color of all Tool Buttons and Action Buttons .

These are the buttons that can be customized.

The Tool Buttons can be identified by their blue frames.

The Action Buttons now have orange frames.

You can click any of the Tool Buttons to bring up the Edit Tool window.

Here you can change the type of the tool ( Pen, Marker, Text, Stamp, Graphical Object ) by clicking the tabs on top of the Edit Tool window.

Within the window, you can find various options to set up your tools.

You can also click any of the Action Buttons to bring up the Customize Command window.

In the Customize Command window, you can select any command from the list, to associate the Action Button with the selected command.

To find a command on this long list, either scroll through the sections on the list, or enter any keyword into the Find command... search box on the top.

Did you also notice the set of buttons on the bottom of both the Edit Tool and Customize Command windows?

These buttons can be used to move the currently selected Tool or Action Button up or down , or to remove the button . Removing the button will not physically removed it, but the button will not be associated with any tool or command anymore, and will stay empty and invisible once you exit Customization Mode. Please note that you cannot merge Tool and Action Buttons. The general setup and maximum numbers of buttons is fixed.

The fourth button is Undo , which will reset your last change on the currently selected button.

Once you're done customizing, click the Settings button again, and see the toolbar getting back to its normal colors, displaying all your changes.

Exiting Full Screen Mode

The last thing to show you in regards to PDF Annotator's Full Screen Mode is how to exit it:

Either press the ESC key on your keyboard, or click the Menu button on the toolbar, and select Exit Full Screen .

Save PowerPoint presentations as PDF files

When you save presentation as a PDF file it freezes the formatting and layout. People can view the slides even if they don’t have PowerPoint, but they can’t make changes to it.

Select File > Export .

Click Create PDF/XPS Document , then click Create PDF/XPS .

In the Publish as PDF or XPS dialog box, choose a location to save the file to. If you want it to have a different name, enter it in the File name box.

Optionally, if you want to change what the final PDF file is like, do any of the following:

At Optimize for , select Standard for higher quality (for example, if you want to print it). Select Minimum size to make the file smaller (for example, if you want to send it as an e-mail attachment).

Click Options to set how the presentation will appear as a PDF. Here are some of the available options:

To save the current slide only as a PDF, under Range , select Current slide .

To save specific slides as PDF, in Slides(s) , enter the slide number range in From and To boxes.

If you don't want to save slides, but instead only save comments, handouts, or Outline view, under Publish what , select an appropriate option. You can also specify the number of slides to appear in Slides per page dropdown box, and modify the order ( Horizontal or Vertical ).

You can choose to include frame slides, hidden slides, comments, ink, non-printing information such as Document properties or Document structure tags, in your PDF by selecting the appropriate options.

Click Publish .

There are two ways to make your PowerPoint for macOS presentation a PDF.

You can save your presentation as a PDF in File > Save As .

You can export your presentation as a PDF file by going to File > Export .

Both methods do the same thing, so you can choose whichever you're more familiar with when you want to create a PDF version of your presentation.

Method 1: Save your presentation as a PDF

Select File > Save As .

Choose the location where you'd like to save your PDF, and then in the File Format menu, choose PDF.

Method 2: Export your presentation as a PDF

In the File Format menu, choose PDF.

Set the print quality of the PDF

Features such as saving notes, saving slides as handouts, including hidden slides in the PDF, or setting the PDF to a smaller file size aren't available. However, you can set the print quality of a PDF to a higher or lower standard.

Tip:  PowerPoint for macOS doesn't preserve hyperlinks in PDFs but if you save your presentation to OneDrive you can open it in PowerPoint for the web and download as PDF from there. PDF files generated from PowerPoint for the web preserve hyperlinks, are accessible, and also tend to have a smaller file size.

You can set the print quality of the PDF to High , Medium , or Low —depending on your need. By default, the print quality is set to High—which is the optimal choice for printing a PDF. Follow these instructions to set the print quality of the PDF:

Click the PowerPoint menu > Preferences .

In the PowerPoint Preferences dialog box, click General .

Under Print Quality (Paper/PDF) , set the Desired Quality to an option of your choice.

Click the File tab, click Download As , and then click Download as PDF . (The file is converted to PDF, and then a dialog box tells you that it is ready to download.

Click Download . A message bar appears to show you that the downloaded PDF file is ready to save to your computer. (The exact message varies depending on the web browser you're using.) 

Click Save As , and then a dialog box appears that allows you to specify where to save the file on your computer.

This preliminary research examined symptom differences on the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist DSM-5 (PCL-5) for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Non-EOD Veterans receiving care at the Washington DC-War Related Illness and Injury Study Center (DC-WRIISC) Veterans Administration Medical Center. EOD Veterans have extensive repetitive blast-exposure histories, exposure to environmental toxins, and operated under high-stress/allostatic load throughout their careers. Therefore, we aim to understand how these unique occupational exposures influence long-term health outcomes for EOD Veterans.

Eligible participants (N = 39, Mage = 51 years (SD = 9.5 years); EOD, n = 21) completed comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluations, self-report questionnaires, were combat deployed, and experienced traumatic brain injury. Total and component scores for the NSI (affective, cognitive, somatic, vestibular, and validity-10) and PCL-5 (criterion B-E symptom clusters), and total score for the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory, (HRLSI) were included.

Regression analysis revealed overall NSI severity was positively correlated to PCL-5 total scores for both groups (EOD: F(1,19) = 25.30, p < 0.001); (Non-EOD: F(1,16) = 25.48, p < 0.001). However, significant differences in symptom presentation were noted between groups. NSI Cognitive scores were positively correlated with PCL-5 component scores for Criterion B for EOD (F(3,17) = 8.40, p < 0.001) and Criterion E for Non-EOD (F(3,14) = 24.32, p < 0.001). Post-hoc analysis suggested stress/resiliency may further contribute to group differences (HRLSI; Non-EOD, F(2,12) = 33.96, p < 0.001).

DC-WRIISC Veterans often present with cognitive concerns and complex medical presentations. Our findings suggest the presence of unique symptom presentations that may improve diagnostic formulation, treatment planning, and engagement. These findings highlight the need for continued research examining the influence occupational exposures have on Veteran health.
