Number Line Worksheets
Welcome to the number lines worksheets page where jumping around is encouraged. This page includes Number line worksheets for learning about the ordinality of numbers and for use as a math aid.
Most Popular Number Line Worksheets this Week
Counting on Number Lines
Each one of these pages includes number lines that increase by 1 for every tick. Various activities are possible, from learning how to count to using these number lines for adding/subtracting. There is no specific activity designated for these number lines, they are printables that you can use as you see fit.
- Counting by 1s on Number Lines Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 10 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 10 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 15 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 15 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 25 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 1 to 25 Counting by 1 Number Lines with Scales from 0 to 50 Counting by 1
Also called skip counting, counting by numbers other than 1 is a useful skill for students to learn as it helps them mentally calculate the answers to operations without the use of a pencil. These printables can be used for a variety of math activities that involve numbers including learning how to skip count, learning multiplication and other operations, or averaging two numbers. The number lines in this section include ticks for all numbers, but only the target interval is labeled.
- Skip Counting on Number Lines (by 2 to 10) Counting by 2 on Number Lines from 0 to 20 Counting by 2 on Number Lines from 0 to 40 Counting by 3 on Number Lines from 0 to 30 Counting by 3 on Number Lines from 0 to 60 Counting by 4 on Number Lines from 0 to 40 Counting by 4 on Number Lines from 0 to 80 Counting by 5 on Number Lines from 0 to 50 Counting by 5 on Number Lines from 0 to 100 Counting by 6 on Number Lines from 0 to 60 Counting by 7 on Number Lines from 0 to 70 Counting by 8 on Number Lines from 0 to 80 Counting by 9 on Number Lines from 0 to 90 Counting by 10 on Number Lines from 0 to 100
Continuous number lines allow for a larger range for extension activities that require larger numbers. The number at which each line ends also starts the next line, so if you wanted something more continuous, you could cut and overlap and paste into one long strip of paper. Activities such as multiplying two-digit by one-digit numbers and looking for patterns can be accomplished with these number lines.
- Counting and Skip Counting on Continuous (Longer) Number Lines (by 1 to 10) Counting by 1 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 100 Counting by 2 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 200 Counting by 3 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 195 Counting by 4 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 200 Counting by 5 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 250 Counting by 6 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 300 Counting by 7 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 350 Counting by 8 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 400 Counting by 9 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 450 Counting by 10 on a Continuous Number Line from 0 to 500
Math Activities Using Number Lines

Adding and Subtracting on Number Lines
Adding and subtracting on number lines math worksheets allow students to visualize questions by drawing curved paths to numbers.
The basic process for completing addition and subtraction questions on number lines is: (i) start at 0; (ii) draw a curved line from 0 to the first addend or to the minuend (first number in the problem); (iii) draw a second curved line from the first addend/minuend to the answer by the same amount as the second addend or the subtrahend. For subtraction questions, the curved line will go toward 0 while in addition questions, the curved line will continue to go to the right. For example, 4 + 5 = 9 would be shown on a number line with a curved line starting at 0 and ending at 4. A second curved line would start at 4 and end at 9 which would be a total distance of 5 (the second addend). If the question was 17 - 8 = 9, the first curved line would start at 0 and go to 17. The second curved line would start at 17 and end at 9 which is a total of 8 backwards.
Adding with number lines is a way for students to visualize how addition works. Modeling addition on a number line first using an interactive white board or an overhead projector allows students to understand how a number line can be a useful tool for learning addition. The answer keys in the case of these worksheets can be shown to students to start with until they understand how the process works. There are 10 versions of each worksheet below, so you shouldn't run out of practice sheets.
- Adding on Number Lines With Intervals of 1 Adding up to 10 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Adding up to 15 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Adding up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1
- Adding on Number Lines With Intervals Greater Than 1 Adding up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 30 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 40 on Number Lines with Intervals of 2 Adding up to 50 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 75 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 5 Adding up to 100 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Adding up to 150 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Adding up to 200 on Number Lines with Intervals of 10 Mixed Addition Number Lines (Not for the Faint of Heart)
The subtracting on number lines worksheets are similar to the adding ones, but two different colors are used on the answer keys. When the value is increasing, a green curve is used, and when the value is decreasing, a red curve is used. Hopefully, students associate these two colors with adding and subtracting as they learn how to subtract using a number line.
- Subtracting on Number Lines With Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 10 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 15 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1 Subtracting from up to 20 on Number Lines with Intervals of 1

How to Use a Printable Number Line
A printable number line is a great resource for teaching a wide variety of math topics. Numbers can seem very abstract, and many of the procedures we use to teach math operations are sometimes more formulaic... Getting kids to understand the flow of a sequence of numbers, navigating by adding or subtracting place values or just moving across zero into the realm of negative numbers can be helped greatly with a number line.
The printable number line PDFs on this page are designed for a variety of applications...
Number Lines to Learn Basic Addition and Subtraction
A number line is a great way for younger grade school students to visualize starting with a number and then moving forward (adding) or backward (subtracting) on the number line to the answer. Much in the same fashion that a multiplication chart can frame the concepts of skip counting and arrays, a number line can be that introduction the the basic linear sequence of numbers. For positive numbers, choose from the 'Number Lines From Zero' and select a value greater than the sum or minuend appropriate for the problem.
As long as your kids are working in the realm of positive numbers, these are the number lines to use, but when you're ready to move into negative numbers, you'll need a number line or two from the next group of printables.
Number Lines to Learn Negative Numbers
Number lines are a very powerful way to familiarize kids with negative numbers . Often a student's first exposure to negative numbers is when a subtraction problem results in a negative difference. Seeing how a number 'turns negative' when moving left across the zero on a number line is one way to allow students to not only understand what is happening numerically, but to provide an almost mechanical device for kids to self-check their work when dealing with fraction facts. Even when students are comfortable subtracting facts with larger negative answers, the number lines with larger ranges can be useful to check for reasonableness. We usually have one or two of these blank number lines on hand when a negative number unit comes up just to double check a few problems before relying solely on the mechanics of number manipulation in multi-digit subtraction problems.
Fraction Number Lines to Learn Fraction Operations
Another math topic where a number line can be a powerful conceptual tool is learning fraction addition and fraction subtraction .
The fraction number line printables on this page can help students visualize how to combine both whole numbers and fractional parts using the same concepts and mechanics as navigating integers on a regular number line. And if your kids need help finding equivalent fractions for problems with different denominators, be sure to check out this beautiful fraction chart I created just to help with this tricky step.
Double Number Lines to Learn Ratios
A double number line is a great way to compare two values and see how they relate to one another. A good example is a problem where a price is given for some quantity of an item, and the student is asked to solve for the price for a different quantity or for the quantity you can purchase with a different amount of money. These are very common word problems , and often students lack a way to visualize the scenario, but by plotting both quantities on a blank double number line students can start to see the relationship between the values and predict where other solutions will occur. a good overview of this technique for solving ratio problems with a double number line is in this Khan Academy video .
Special Number Lines for Elapsed Time, Money and Temperature Problems
Adding and subtracting values with distinct types of fractional units (for example minutes in an hour or cents in dollars) can be a tricky topic, and a number line marked in time or money units can be a huge help for students struggling with these applied math problems. I've included a few number lines specifically tailored to elapsed time problems and money in this section. Also, I constructed a special double number line with both Fahrenheit and Celsius temperature units which is great for temperature conversion problems, or you can use either scale individually for problems that involve only one measurement system.

Number Line for Kids
The number for kids is one of the easiest ways to teach a child the sequence of numbers. Additionally, it’s also a great tool to teach them how to perform basic operations like addition and subtraction. In Math, a number line can be defined as a straight line on which numbers are marked at equal intervals. The number line is used to illustrate simple numerical operations. Teaching the number line for kids is extremely important to enhance their math skills.
The best way to teach the number line to children is by demonstrating it with math games for kids . So, we’ve compiled a list of number line games and worksheets for kids to help them learn about the number line easily.
Explaining the Number Line for Kids
- Number Line for Kindergarten: When you teach the number line to a child in kindergarten keep it simple. Explain to them that a number line is a long straight line with markings at equal intervals to denote the numbers. Draw a number line with numbers from 0 to 10 and gradually increase the numbers as they learn more.
- Number Line for Kids in Elementary School: A child in elementary school can recognize numbers and count them. They also know the correct sequential order of numbers. They’re just learning how to add and subtract, so use the number line to teach them these operations. For example, add two numbers: 5 + 3. To find the answer to 5+3, move 3 steps from the number 5 on the number line. You’ll land on 8, so 5+3 = 8. Similarly, you can also use the number line to teach kids how to subtract numbers. To subtract numbers, move backwards (right to left). You can also explain to kids in elementary school about negative numbers on the number line.

What is a number line?
So, what is a number line?
A number line is just that – a straight, horizontal line with numbers placed at even increments along the length. It’s not a ruler, so the space between each number doesn’t matter, but the numbers included on the line determine how it’s meant to be used.
A number ladder is the vertical version of a number line.
How are number lines used?
Number lines can be used throughout a child's time at primary school, starting in Reception; ordering numbers is an important skill and children may be given a blank number line and asked to put a variety of numbers in order on it.
A child might be given the following question: 7 + 2 = They will be shown how to put their finger on the 7 and then count on 2 until they get to 9. This makes the idea of a number increasing very visual for them.
For this question: 9 - 4 = children will be asked to put their finger on the 9 and then jump back 4 until they get to 5.
Children start learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s in Year 1 which then forms a basis for learning their 2, 5 and 10 times tables in Year 2. A number line can be very helpful for this, whereby they mark on jumps to show how to move from one number to the next.
In Year 3 and 4 a number line can be used to work out times table questions , for example: if a child is asked what 4 x 3 is, they could jump along a number line in 3s four times to reach the number 12:
In Year 4, children start to use a number line to understand the concept of negative numbers :
Are there different kinds of number lines?
Because the concept is so simple, number lines can pretty much take any shape you like. For example, they can extend vertically to help your child visualise the problem in a slightly different way – these are called number ladders.
Where can I get a number line?
You can print out number lines from TheSchoolRun, or draw one yourself using a ruler and the long side of a sheet of A4 paper. If you create number lines for your children to help them with their maths homework, add colours, shapes or favourite characters to make them a little more interesting – our versions have been designed to look fun.
Number lines are an invaluable tool all the way through a child's time at primary school. It is a really good idea to get children in the habit of thinking about whether drawing their own number line will help them to solve a problem.
