Windows 11 start menu

Sharing what you see on your PC is easy once you know how to record a screen on Windows. When you need more than just a screenshot, perhaps for a video tutorial or presentation, Windows' built-in screen recording feature is really simple to use.

Previously, recording a screen on Windows required expensive equipment or third-party software, but Windows 10 and Windows 11 have the functionality built right, allowing anyone to record their screen with just a few clicks of a mouse.

You're going to be using the Xbox Game Bar tool, but don't worry if you're not a gamer. While this tool can seem a little finicky, it’s actually a pretty straightforward process, as we’ll explain below.

The one catch is that you can't use these features to record Windows Desktop or File Explorer , though that shouldn't be a problem for most users.

So, if you're ready to go, here's how to record your screen on Windows.

Note : This guide was written for Windows 10, though the steps also apply to Windows 11.

1. Open the app you want to record

How to record a screen on Windows 10 - open app

Open whatever app or program you want to record on your screen. It’s worth noting that the recording tool won’t work on everything. Programs such as File Manager or your device’s desktop won’t allow recording, but most other apps will, including most video games as well. 3. Click Record

Press the Record button in the top left of the Xbox Game Bar — it’s the one that looks like a white circle. Alternatively use the keyboard shortcut Windows + Alt + R. This will start the recording process. It's worth noting that sound is also recorded as well, so don’t leave a video or music playing in the background unless required.

4. Uncheck the mic button (optional)

how to record your screen on windows 10 - uncheck mic

If your device has a built-in microphone or is connected to one, you can also capture mic audio. This is useful for adding voice-over to your recording, perfect for creating tutorials or a video lecture.

To record your mic audio, just make sure to uncheck the mic icon which is located next to the recording button as well as on the “capture status” bar that will appear once you start recording.

Mic audio is muted by default, so make sure you don’t forget to switch it on if required.

5. Click Stop to finish recording

Once you’ve recorded everything you need, just hit the blue stop button on the “capture status” bar and your recording will end. The stop button can also be found on the capture tab as well.

If the interface has disappeared, just press Windows + G to bring the Xbox Game Bar back up.

6. Find your recording in File Manager

Once you’ve created your recording, locating the file is super simple. Each recording you make will be automatically stored by Windows in a file labeled “Captures” which can be found in the Videos section of your File Manager. From here you can rename the files, move them to a different location or send them to someone via email or services like DropBox.

Recording video on Windows 10 is straightforward and can be done using built-in software like the Xbox Game Bar or third-party applications such as OBS Studio. With the right steps, you can capture your screen, gameplay, or any other activity on your Windows 10 device effortlessly.

How to Record Video on Windows 10

Let’s take a step-by-step look at how to record video on Windows 10 using the Xbox Game Bar, which is a built-in tool. By following these steps, you’ll be able to capture high-quality video directly from your screen.

Step 1: Open Xbox Game Bar

Press Windows key + G to open the Xbox Game Bar.

The Xbox Game Bar is a versatile tool that allows you to record your screen, take screenshots, and even stream your gameplay. Once opened, you’ll see a variety of widgets that you can use for different purposes.

Step 2: Start Recording

Click on the "Capture" widget and then press the "Start Recording" button (a circle icon).

This widget is essentially your control panel for recording. When you hit the "Start Recording" button, you’ll notice a timer indicating that your screen recording has begun.

Step 3: Stop Recording

Press the stop button (a square icon) on the Capture widget or press Windows key + Alt + R.

When you stop the recording, the Xbox Game Bar saves your video file automatically. You can find it in the "Captures" folder, usually located in the "Videos" directory on your computer.

Step 4: Review Your Recording

Navigate to the "Captures" folder to locate and review your video file.

It’s a good idea to check your recording to ensure that everything you wanted to capture is there. You can play the file using any media player to verify its content.

Step 5: Edit (Optional)

Use a video editing software if you need to trim or enhance your recording.

Editing can make your video more professional. There are several free and paid video editing tools available, such as Windows Movie Maker, Adobe Premiere, or even simpler online editors like Clipchamp.

After finishing these steps, you’ll have a video recording saved on your device that you can share or edit as needed.

Tips for Recording Video on Windows 10

Using the Xbox Game Bar

Step 1 Open the Game Bar app.

  • If you’re not signed in, follow the on-screen instructions to sign in (or create an account) now.
  • Game Bar comes pre-installed on Windows 10. If you’ve removed the app, you can re-install it from the Microsoft Store.
  • This method works on all Windows 10 computers as long as your video card supports one of these encoders: Intel Quick Sync H.260, Nvidia NVENC, or AMD VCE.

Step 2 Press ⊞ Win+G.

  • Open the Start menu and click Settings .
  • Click Gaming .
  • Click Game Bar in the left column.
  • Scroll down on the right panel to adjust your audio and video preferences.
  • Close the Settings window when you're finished and return to the Xbox Game Bar.

Step 4 Press ⊞ Win+Alt+R to start recording the screen.

  • Click the microphone icon on the bar to toggle sound recording on or off.

Step 5 Click the square when you’re finished recording.

Using FlashBack Express Recorder

Step 1 Install FlashBack Express...

  • Click CONTINUE TO EXPRESS below the purple button near the center of the page.
  • Click GET EXPRESS – FREE .
  • Save the installer to your computer.
  • Double-click the installer and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Step 2 Open FlashBack Express Recorder.

  • To record the whole screen, select Full screen from the ″Record″ drop-down menu.
  • Select Window if you just want to record use of a single app.
  • Select Region if you’d like to select an area of the screen to record.
  • To record your webcam, check the box at the bottom of the window that says ″Record Webcam.″

Step 5 Select which sound to record.

  • If you don’t want to record sound, remove the check mark from the ″Record Sound″ box.
  • To record sounds using your computer’s microphone, leave the ″Microphone″ option checked. If you don’t want your recording to pick up your own voice (or sounds within your space), remove the check mark next to this option.
  • To record sounds coming from your computer (such as in-app sounds), check the ″Default PC Speakers″ box (or select your speakers).

Step 6 Click Record when you’re ready to start recording.

  • If you’re recording the full screen, a countdown will appear. When the countdown is complete, everything on the screen will be recorded.
  • If you’re recording one window, you’ll be prompted to click the window you want to record, and then click Record . The recording will begin once the countdown is complete and a progress bar will be displayed.
  • If you’re recording a region of the screen, follow the on-screen instructions to select which part of the screen to capture, and then click Record . The recording will begin once the countdown is complete and a progress bar will be displayed.

  • Or open PowerPoint presentation > Insert > Screen Recording . Select area on desktop > Record .

This article explains how to enable screen recording to record your screen on Windows 10 using the Windows Game Bar or PowerPoint. Instructions cover Windows 10 desktop and laptop computers.

How to Use Game Bar to Screen Record on Windows

Here's how to record on Windows 10 using the Game bar. You'll need to set up the Windows Game Bar if you haven't already. Once you've set it up, follow the steps below.

Open the app or program you want to record and then press Windows + G on your keyboard. This opens the Game bar overlay.

In the Gamebar overlay, you'll see several widgets, including Capture , Audio , Performance , and maybe Xbox Social . There is also a main toolbar at the top of the screen that corresponds with these widgets, so you can add or remove them at any time.

In the Capture widget, select Record .

Once the recording starts, a recorder appears in the upper right corner of the page. Here you can view the recording time, press Stop (blue circle with a white square in the center), or control your microphone.

When you're finished, press the Stop and a message flyout appears on the right side of the screen to let you know that you have created a recording. You can click this message to access the recording or you can navigate to the recording in your Videos file.

Windows 10 Game Bar Limitations

It's easy to record your screen on Windows 10 with the Game bar, but there are a few caveats.

  • Some applications, such as File Manager, cannot be captured with the Game bar.
  • You cannot capture your desktop; you must be capturing an app.
  • If while you're capturing, another window appears over the one you are recording, it won't appear in your recording (but the movement of your cursor will).
  • You can use apps from either the Windows Store or apps that you've already installed on your computer.

How to Screen Capture in Windows 10 Using PowerPoint

If you need to capture your desktop or capture multiple windows, Microsoft PowerPoint might be a better option for capturing your screen. It's fast to set up and more versatile than using the Game bar.

Open a new presentation in Powerpoint and go to Insert > Screen Recording .

The PowerPoint presentation will minimize, and your desktop will appear. If you don't get a prompt to select the area you want to record, click Select Area and drag your cursor around the area you want to record. A red, dashed bounding box appears around the area you want to record.

Once you've set the area, you can click Audio to turn the audio on or off and Record Pointer to capture (or not) the pointer as you move around the screen. When you're satisfied with your setting, click Record .

A short countdown will appear, and then your recording will be live. The control panel for your recording may also disappear. If you push your cursor into the top, middle of the screen, the control box will appear again.

When you need to pause or stop your recording, you can choose Pause or Stop from the Recording menu.

Once you stop the recording, you'll be taken back to PowerPoint, and the recording will insert into the slide you selected. To save it to your computer, right-click the recording and select Save Media as from the menu.

Navigate to where you want to save the file and then click Save .

In Windows 11, open the Xbox Game Bar and select Record . You can also use PowerPoint's screen-recording utility: select Insert > Media > Screen Recording .

Open the Control Center and tap Screen Recording . You'll see a countdown from three to one, and then the screen will start recording your content or actions. Tap Screen Recording again to stop. The video will be saved to the Photos app.

To screen record on a Mac , press  Command+Shift+5  > choose Record Entire Screen , or select Record Selected Portion > select the area you want to record. Press Record when you're ready.

Screen Recording PowerPoint Step 4

After you stop the recording, PowerPoint will automatically embed it into the slide. If that was your intention all along, well and good. Otherwise, you will need to save it somewhere on your desktop. Microsoft PowerPoint provides a few editing tools such as Style, Trim, and Start [at some point]. To save the file separately, Right Click said file and Save Media As. Rename it as appropriate and save it at a location of your choosing.

Congratulations, you just recorded your screen with Microsoft PowerPoint. More Power to you!

Stop your recording

Your screen recording will now appear in your PowerPoint slide.

Now that you’ve successfully embedded the recording in your presentation, you might want to adjust a few of the settings. There are a few things you can do here, including trimming the video, setting how the video plays during the presentation, or applying a style to the video’s frame.

Trimming Your Video

There may be a few seconds of your video that you’d like to remove. You can trim these parts out directly in PowerPoint. Right-click the video and select “Trim.”

The “Trim Video” window will appear. Here, click and drag the green and red bars to adjust the start and stop time, respectively. Once you’ve set this up, click “OK.”

Setting Video Playback Rules

You can tell PowerPoint how to play your video during the presentation. To do this, right-click the video and select “Start” from the menu.

A sub-menu will appear, presenting three different playback options:

  • In Click Sequence: The video will play in the appropriate order you’ve set in terms of actionable sequences (such as animations).
  • Automatically: The video will automatically play when it appears.
  • When Clicked On: The video will play when you click on it.

Select the one that works best for you.

Applying Frame Styles

If you want to make your video more visually appealing, you can apply a frame to it. To do so, right-click the video and select “Style” from the menu.

A sub-menu will appear, presenting a large library of frames for your video. Hovering over each one will show a live preview of how the frame will look.

How to Record Your Screen on Windows 10: Four Simple Methods that Work

Brent Hale TechGuided.com

W hether it’s for business, instructional, or entertainment purposes (such as gaming) there are many reasons why you’d want to record your PC’s screen. Whether you’re looking to get into creating gaming-related video content (whether on Twitch or on YouTube), or you want to make intructional how-to videos, you’re going to need to know how to record your computer’s screen.

Fortunately, there are a ton of different ways that you can accomplish recording the content on your computer’s display. In this guide, we’ll go over four different methods you can use to capture video from your computer so that you can use it to either stream live to your followers, or upload it as video content on a site like YouTube.

1. How to record your screen with the built-in feature on Windows 10 (Windows Game Bar)

One of the great features of Microsoft Windows 10 is that it features many programs already included with the operating system. The good news is that Windows 10 has its own built-in screen recorder so that you can record games (or anything else).

The not-so-good news is that it can be a little tricky to find. In order to locate it, you’ll need to open the pre-installed Xbox app. Click on the Windows Start button, go to the search box, and type in Xbox to find it. Next, hold down [Windows]+[G] on your keyboard. When prompted, click on the ‘Yes, this is a game’ button.

Windows 10 Game Bar

To start recording, click on the ‘Start recording’ button or hold down [Windows]+[Alt]+[R]. You can click ‘Stop recording’ or use same keyboard shortcut when you’re done. Recorded videos will be saved in your Videos/Capture folder in MP4 format.

To customize the recorder’s settings, log into the Xbox app and access the Game DVR options. You can’t choose a different destination folder for recordings, but you can pick a quality setting, decide whether or not to record audio, and set a maximum clip length.

*NOTE:  One downside of the Windows 10 Game Bar is that, not all Windows 10 devices are able to record your screen with the Game Bar. In order to meet the requirements for using the Windows Game Bar, you’ll need a GPU that supports one of the following encoders:

  • Intel Quick Sync H.260
  • NVIDIA NVENC

2. How to record your screen with third party applications

Along with Windows Game Bar, there are also plenty of third party applications that will allow you to record your PC’s screen. Some third party options include, Open Broadcaster Software and BB Flashback . Both of these are free to download. Since they are free, you are pretty much beholden to the community of users for support. However, these programs have large enough communities of support such that they are viable options.

OBS Screen Record

To use Open Broadcaster Software, select the settings you desire for video capture and video output. Since this software uses Scenes and Sources, you will need to open a new Scene and select a Source (e.g. video) for that Scene. Click Ok on the next two pop up windows that appear on your screen. Next, go to the Settings and click on the Output tab. Make sure that you are aware of your file destination for your recordings. From there, you are able to click Start Recording and Stop Recording as needed.

Should you opt for BB Flashback, the procedure is different and even a little more straightforward. By choosing to record your screen, the program lets you choose whether you want to record the entire screen or just an active window, or some specific region you have chosen. You will then need to choose an audio source via the check boxes on the screen. Once you have satisfied those requirements, you can click the Record button at the bottom of the window to start and stop recording. Now, if you want to take advantage of advanced features, you will need to purchase the Pro version.

3. How to record your screen with NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card in your computer, then you can use NVIDIA’s built-in screen capture feature, ShadowPlay (which can be run through NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience software ). If you’re unsure on whether or not you have an NVIDIA GPU, check our guide on How to Check Your Computer’s Specs for a step-by-step process on how to find out what hardware you have in your computer.

If you’ve confirmed that you have an NVIDIA GPU, you’ll need to download NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience software (if you don’t have it already). Once you have the GeForce Experience software downloaded, you’ll need to log into it with your NVIDIA account.

Screen Record with GeForce Experience

And, from there, you’ll want to click on the gear icon (settings) next to your profile name in the top right-hand corner, scroll down until you see ‘In-Game Overlay’ and make sure that the ‘On’ slider is switched to the left (making it green).

From there, recording is as simple as using the hotkey [ALT] + [F9] to both start and end your recording. All of your recordings will be saved in your  user’s ‘Videos’ folder.

4. How to record your screen with AMD’s Radeon ReLive

Not surprisingly, AMD also has a built-in screen capture feature on their newer graphics cards called Radeon ReLive.

Screen Record with AMD ReLive

In order to use Radeon ReLive, you must first make sure it is enabled from within Radeon Settings . To do this, open Radeon Settings by right clicking on your Desktop and then selecting AMD Radeon Settings. Once this has been enabled, you can customize the program to the hotkeys you want to start and stop your recordings.

And, like NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience, video captures from AMD ReLive will be stored in your user’s ‘Videos’ folder.

Record a slide show with narration and slide timings

You can record your PowerPoint presentation—or a single slide—and capture voice, ink gestures, and your video presence. When completed, it’s like any other presentation. You can play it for your audience in a Slide Show or you can save the presentation as a video file. So, instead of just “handing the deck” to someone, people can see your presentation with the passion and personality intact.

A new feature for Microsoft 365 was rolled out in early 2022. Exactly when your business has this feature is also based on when your admin distributes new features in Microsoft 365.

This article contains procedures for both the new experience and the classic experience:

Turn on the Recording tab of the ribbon: On the File tab of the ribbon, click  Options . In the Options  dialog box, click the Customize Ribbon  tab on the left. Then, in the right-hand box that lists the available ribbon tabs, select the Recording  check box. Click OK .

The Customize Ribbon tab of the PowerPoint 2016 Options dialog box has an option to add the Recording tab to the PowerPoint ribbon.

To get ready to record, select Record on either the Recording  tab or the Slide Show  tab of the ribbon.

Clicking the upper half of the button starts you on the current slide.

Clicking the lower half of the button gives you the option to start from the beginning or from the current slide.

The Record Slide Show commands on the Recording Tab in PowerPoint.

(The Clear  command deletes narrations or timings, so be careful when you use it. Clear  is grayed out unless you have previously recorded some slides.)

The slide show opens in the Recording window (which looks similar to Presenter view), with buttons at the top left for starting, pausing, and stopping the recording. Click the round, red button (or press R on your keyboard) when you are ready to start the recording. A three-second countdown ensues, then the recording begins.

The current slide is shown in the main pane of the Recording window.

You can stop the recording any time by pressing Alt + S on your keyboard.

Navigation arrows on either side of the current slide allow you to move to the previous and next slides.

PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 automatically records the time you spend on each slide, including any Animate text or objects  steps that occur, and the use of any triggers on each slide.

You can record audio or video narration as you run through your presentation. The buttons at the lower-right corner of the window allow you to toggle on or off the microphone, camera, and camera preview:

If you use the pen, highlighter, or eraser, PowerPoint records those actions for playback also.

Inking tools in the Recording window

If you re-record your narration (including audio and ink), PowerPoint erases your previously recorded narration (including audio and ink) before you start recording again on the same slide.

You can also re-record by going to Slide Show  >  Record .

You can pick a pointer tool (pen, eraser, or highlighter) from the array of tools just below the current slide. There are also color selection boxes for changing the color of the ink. ( Eraser  is grayed out unless you have previously added ink to some slides.)

To end your recording, select the square Stop button (or press S on your keyboard).

When you finish recording your narration, a small picture appears in the lower-right corner of the recorded slides. The picture is an audio icon, or, if the web camera was on during the recording, a still image from the webcam.

The recorded slide show timing is automatically saved. (In Slide Sorter view, the timings are listed beneath each slide.)

In this process, what you record is embedded in each slide, and the recording can be played back in Slide Show. A video file is not created by this recording process. However, if you need one, you can save your presentation as a video with a few extra steps.

Preview the recorded slide show

On the Slide Show  tab, click From Beginning  or From Current Slide .

During playback, your animations, inking actions, audio and video will play in sync.

In Normal view, click the sound icon or picture in the lower-right corner of the slide, and then click Play . (When you preview individual audio in this way, you won't see recorded animation or inking.)

Click Play

You can pause playback while previewing the audio.

Set the slide timings manually

PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 automatically records your slide timings when you add narrations, or you can manually set the slide timings to accompany your narrations.

In Normal view, click the slide that you want to set the timing for.

On the Transitions tab, in the Timing group, under Advance Slide , select the After check box, and then enter the number of seconds that you want the slide to appear on the screen. Repeat the process for each slide that you want to set the timing for.

If you want the next slide to appear either when you click the mouse or automatically after the number of seconds that you enter—whichever comes first—select both the On Mouse Click and the After check boxes.

You can use manual slide timings to the trim the end of a recorded slide segment. For example, if the end of a slide segment concludes with two seconds of unnecessary audio, simply set the timing for advancing to the next slide so that it happens before the unnecessary audio. That way you don't have to re-record the audio for that slide.

Delete timings or narration

The Clear command is for deleting timings or narration from your recording that you don't want or that you want to replace.

In the Recording window, the Clear command in the top margin of the window allows you to:

Clear recordings on the current slide

Clear recordings on all slides

In Normal view, there are four different Clear commands that allow you to:

Delete the timings on the currently selected slide

Delete the timings on all slides at once

Delete the narration on the currently selected slide

Delete the narration on all slides at once

If you do not want to delete all the timings or narration in your presentation, open a specific slide that has a timing or narration that you do want to delete.

On the Recording tab of the PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 ribbon, on the Record Slide Show button, click the down arrow, point to Clear , and then choose the appropriate Clear command for your situation.

Turn off timings or turn off narrations, and ink

After you've recorded your PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 presentation, any timings, gestures, and audio you performed are saved on the individual slides. But you can turn them all off if you want to view the slide show without them:

To turn off recorded slide timings: On the Slide Show tab, clear the Use Timings box.

To turn off recorded narrations and ink: On the Slide Show tab, clear the Play Narrations box.

Publish the recording to share it with others

Once you've edited the recording to your satisfaction, you can make it available to others by publishing to Microsoft Stream.

With the presentation open, on the Recording tab, select Publish to Stream .

Type a title and a description for the video.

Set other options, including whether you want others in your organization to have permission to see the video.

Select the Publish button.

The upload process can take several minutes, depending on the length of the video. A status bar at the bottom of the PowerPoint window tracks the progress, and PowerPoint shows a message when the upload is finished:

PowerPoint notifies you when the upload is finished

Click the message to go directly to the video playback page on Microsoft Stream.

Create closed captions

To make your video more accessible by including closed captions, choose from these options, which are described in separate Help articles:

Manually write a closed caption file yourself

Get a closed-caption file automatically generated by Microsoft Stream

Once you have a closed-caption file, you can add it to your video file by using PowerPoint .

Record a slide show

With your presentation open, on the Slide Show tab, click Record Slide Show .

(The Clear command deletes narrations or timings, so be careful when you use it. Clear is grayed out unless you have previously recorded some slides.)

In the Record Slide Show box, check or clear the boxes for your recording, and click Start Recording .

How to screen record in Windows 10 or 11 with built-in tools

lance-31.png

I sometimes need to record screen activity in Windows for a tutorial or demonstration or online class. Whether you're creating a presentation, devising a how-to video, or cooking up something for YouTube, you might want to record your screen activity in Windows as well.

A variety of third-party tools can handle that job -- some free and some paid. But rather than download and install an external program, you can take advantage of a couple of features built directly into Windows.

Also: How to upgrade your 'incompatible' Windows 10 PC to Windows 11

Available in Windows 10 and 11, the Xbox Game Bar video-capture tool is designed to record gameplay on your PC. But it's a versatile tool that will capture just about any other type of screen activity.

With Xbox Game Bar, you can easily record your screen, turn on the microphone to grab your voice or other audio, and save the recording to your PC. You can then manage all the recorded clips within the Game Bar interface and play any video. The video itself is saved as an MP4 file, so you can modify or spruce it up using any video editor. I'll show you this process in detail below.

But there's another option, at least if you use Windows 11. Once a simple screen-capture utility, the Snipping Tool can record any screen activity and save the recording as an MP4 video file. Let's check out both options.

How to record any screen activity in Windows with Xbox Game Bar

1. go to the settings for gaming.

In Windows 10 or 11, go to Settings > Gaming > Captures. The screens look different between Windows 10 and 11, but the settings are all the same.

Also:  7 ways to make Windows 11 less annoying

By default, your screen recordings are saved in your user folder under Videos\Captures, but you can change the location if you wish.

2. Set the duration for background recording

Next, you can opt to record activity that has already occurred. In Windows 10, turn on the switch for "Record in the background while I'm playing a game." In Windows 11, turn on the switch for "Record what happened." You can then determine the duration for background recording. Click the dropdown menu for "Record the last" to set the time to anywhere from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.

3. Enable your recording options

Next, check the boxes for "Record even when my PC isn't plugged in" and "Record while wirelessly projecting my screen" to enable both options.

Also: How to send and receive iMessages on Windows

Click the dropdown menu for "Max recording length" to set it to 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, or 4 hours.

4. Enable and control audio capture during screen recording

Turn on the switch for "Record audio when I record a game" or "Capture audio when recording a game." You're then able to set the quality of the audio, the recording volume for your microphone, and the volume for your PC.

5. Set frame rate and turn off Capture mouse cursor when recording a game

The recommended frame rate is 30 frames per second. You can bump that up to 60fps, but 30fps should suffice for most recordings. The default video quality is set to standard, though you can change that to high if necessary. Finally, you can turn off the switch for "Capture mouse cursor when recording a game" if you don't typically record the mouse cursor.

5. Control keyboard shortcuts

Several keyboard shortcuts are available to control the Xbox Game Bar. In Windows 10, you can view and even change the shortcuts in the Settings screen. For this, go to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.

Also:   The best Windows laptops you can buy right now

In Windows 11, you have to open the Game Bar interface to view and modify the shortcuts. The following shortcuts are ones you'll want to keep in mind:

  • Windows key+G: Open Xbox Game Bar.
  • Windows key+Alt+R: Start or stop recording.
  • Windows key+ Alt+G: Record the last 30 seconds of screen activity.
  • Windows key+Alt+B: Turn HDR on or off.
  • Windows key+Alt+PrtScn: Take a static screenshot of your screen activity.

How to run the Game Bar

1. set up the activity you want to record.

Now, let's display the Game Bar and activate it to record your screen activity. Set up the activity you wish to record. When ready, press Windows key+G. The top toolbar and the Capture pane for Game Bar should appear.

2. Start a recording

Tap the Record button in the Capture pane. Then perform the screen activity you want to capture. A small recording panel appears on the screen.

3. Stop and view your recording

When you've completed the activity being captured, press the stop button on the small panel to stop the recording. A message pops up telling you that the game clip was recorded.

Click that message or press Windows key+G to return to the Game Bar interface. A Gallery window appears with the name, date, and time of the recording, and the video available for playback. Tap the Play button in the viewer.

From there you can pause the video and raise or lower the volume.

4. How to record without launching Game Bar

First, press Windows key+Alt+R. The small recording panel appears on the screen. Click the stop button when finished and then open Game Bar. Your new recording now appears in the Gallery window for you to play. If you need to capture the last 30 seconds of screen activity, press Windows key+ Alt+G.

5. How to work with recorded video directly

Go to c:\users\[username]\Videos\Captures. You'll see your videos saved as MP4 files, which you can open in a video editor or other application to play or modify them.

6. How to tweak Game Bar settings

Press Windows key+G. On the top toolbar, click the Settings icon. Here, you can view and change any of the shortcut keys, modify the visual theme of the Game Bar interface and the transparency of the menus and panes, and control how and when audio is recording as you capture your screen activity.

Recording a PowerPoint Presentation, the FAQs

Subscribe to techsmith’s newsletter.

Everyone has, at some point, put a load of time and effort into creating the perfect PowerPoint presentation, only to use it once or twice. But isn’t it a shame for all that hard work to be discarded so quickly? Is every slide deck destined for deletion after just a couple of uses?

Isn’t there a better way to make the most out of your presentations? Well, yes. Yes, there is.

Rather than simply creating and presenting your work once or twice, recording your presentations can give them a new lease of life. Whether it’s a data report or a self-recorded PowerPoint, you can record a presentation in real-time, or in advance to make it available on-demand.

In this guide, we’ll explore two distinct ways of recording your presentation. First, we’ll discuss how to record a presentation from PowerPoint with audio and webcam, and then we’ll look at how to turn your .ppt slides into a video.

Benefits of Recording a Presentation

As well as there being many different ways to record a presentation, there are also many benefits of recording them. So, before we show you the ‘how,’ let’s talk about the ‘why.’

  • Encouraging asynchronous communication : One key benefit is fostering asynchronous communication . By recording presentations, you’re letting your audience engage with the content in their own time, breaking the constraints of time zones and scheduling conflicts. This also ensures your viewers can absorb information at their own pace, and revisit it as needed.
  • Boosting SEO : You can use your presentation to create a YouTube video and share it on your website to increase your online visibility and attract prospective customers. This can be a great way to expand your audience, increase web traffic, and establish yourself as an expert in your field.
  • Perfecting your presentation : Whether it’s in-person or over Zoom, you don’t get second chances with live presentations. However, a pre-recorded keynote lets you perfect the content and the narration before anyone sees it. This is a great way to combat stage fright while honing your presentation skills and building confidence.

With this in mind, turning your slides into a video is a no-brainer. It’s an easy way to grow your audience and make the information you’re sharing more accessible and easier to digest.

Video messages > meetings

Record your screen and camera with Snagit for quick updates and feedback.

Screenshot of a video message with a dark-themed dashboard and various reaction emojis

Depending on your audience and the type of presentation you need to deliver, TechSmith’s Snagit could just be the perfect tool for recording your PowerPoint. With its user-friendly interface and advanced features, Snagit is ideal for capturing top-notch presentation videos, in just a few clicks.

Now, there’s no denying that presentations are better when you can see the presenter… Fortunately, Snagit lets you capture your screen and webcam at the same time to create a Picture-in-Picture video.

In this section, we’ll guide you through the steps to record your presentation and webcam with Snagit.

Step 1: Open video capture

First, open Snagit and navigate to the Capture window. Select the Video tab, and start by clicking the big red Capture button.

Step 2: Select a recording area

Next, you’ll be prompted to choose which parts of your screen you want to record. Use Snagit’s orange crosshairs to select a specific region, window, or your entire screen.

Step 3: Configure recording settings

With the Video Recording toolbar, you can set options like Cursor Capture and Effects, System Audio, and Webcam.

If your webcam isn’t showing, click on the webcam icon. If you have an external webcam, select the one you want to use by clicking the dropdown arrow next to the webcam icon.

Step 4: Adjust your webcam

Next, adjust your webcam options to ensure your Picture-in-Picture recording looks how you want it. Here you can change the Picture-in-Picture placement as well as the shape and size of your webcam recording. You can even toggle between Picture-in-Picture and fullscreen webcam modes as you like.

The best part? You can make these adjustments even while recording.

Step 5: Manage recording

When you’re ready to roll, hit the Record button and click the Stop button when you’re finished. It’s that simple!

And remember, if there’s an interruption (like an unexpected visit from the mailman), just hit Pause. It’s okay to take a break — your video won’t be ruined by a little interruption.

Step 6: Edit your video

Once you’ve finished recording, Snagit will automatically open your video in the Snagit Editor, which is super easy to use. From here, you can make light edits to the footage as needed.

For example, if you need to cut or trim your footage , you can! Here’s how:

  • Set Start Point : Drag the Start handle (green) on the timeline to your desired starting point.
  • Set End Point : Similarly, drag the End handle (red) to where you want to end the cut.
  • Review the Segment : Before making any cuts, you can review the segment by dragging the Playhead (white) left and right across the timeline. This ensures you’re only cutting the footage you intend to.
  • Make the Cut : Once you’re satisfied with the selection, click the Cut button, which will pop up once you’ve made a selection.

And that’s all there is to it! If you want to go the extra mile, you can also use Snagit to save individual frames of your video as images , which can be used to create a thumbnail for your video .

Record your screen with Snagit

Snagit makes it easy to share quick updates and how-to’s by capturing exactly what’s happening on your screen.

Screen recording of a dashboard showing conversion rate, spend, and monthly performance with a picture-in-picture webcam view of a smiling man.

Now, Snagit is great for recording less formal videos in a flash, but if your presentation is intended for a particularly large or important audience, you might be looking to create something more polished. This is where TechSmith’s Camtasia comes in.

Camtasia is one of the smartest and most intuitive pieces of editing software out there, but it also makes for a pretty nifty screen recorder too. Camtasia is great for recording presentations when you need more control and editing powers over the final product.

But best of all, Camtasia streamlines the process by letting you record your presentation and voice over directly within PowerPoint.

Step 1: Set up your presentation video recording

If you’re a Windows user, you’ll have the option to include a PowerPoint Add-in Toolbar when you install Camtasia. While this feature isn’t currently available on MacOS, the Camtasia Add-in Toolbar allows you to start, stop, and control your recordings from within PowerPoint — so you don’t need to switch between applications.

Screenshot of how to record a powerpoint presentation with the Camtasia add-in toolbar

Just open the presentation you want to record and locate the Add-in toolbar under the Add-ins tab.

Don’t see the add-in toolbar? Go to File > Options > Add-ins, to enable it. Click on the Manage drop-down, select Disabled Items, then click Go. If the Camtasia Add-in is listed, select it, and click Enable.

If you’re an Apple user, don’t panic! You can still record your screen (with audio) on a Mac using Camtasia, and it’s just as easy. Alternatively, you can skip ahead to the next section and import your slides directly into Camtasia.

Step 2: Customize your recording options

Now let’s walk through each of the options on the toolbar before we begin recording.

Screenshot of the Camtasia add-in toolbar to record powerpoint

Record audio

The microphone button controls whether or not audio is recorded as part of your presentation. When you enable it, you’ll be able to record your narration using a microphone.

If you are planning to record audio, this is where you’ll select your microphone. If you want to record great audio , we suggest using an external microphone, rather than the one that’s built into your laptop.

Some of the best microphones for recording video are likely to be less expensive than you think. But, if you’re on a shoestring budget, even the mic that’s built into your headphones could produce better audio than your laptop.

Once you’re set up, be sure to test the mic and adjust the volume slider as needed. You’ll also need to decide whether or not to record your system audio, which is any sound that comes out of your speakers, such as email notifications.

Record webcam

If you have a webcam, you can also record your camera during the presentation to create a Picture-in-Picture clip — just as you can with Snagit!

screenshot of adding webcam to a presentation recording

To customize even more of the recording settings, click the Recording Options button. Here you’ll find settings that let you record with a watermark and adjust your video frame rate . There are a few more options too, but the default settings should work just fine.

When you’re ready, click OK to close this window and save any changes made.

Step 3: Record your presentation

The final step is as simple as clicking the Record button in the toolbar. This will launch your slides into the Presentation Mode and start recording.

When you exit Presentation Mode or reach the end of your slideshow, you can either continue recording your screen, or stop recording and save your file. Pretty easy right?

Before you get started, let us show you another way to turn your presentation into a video, without recording your desktop .

Another way to create a video from your presentation is to import your PowerPoint slides into Camtasia. This way you can adjust how long each slide appears on screen, as well as add Behaviors and Annotations to personalize your presentation and highlight important information.

By importing your slides into Camtasia, and recording your voice over separately, you get a lot more flexibility with the editing process, which means you have more control over the finished article.

If you do decide to record your audio separately, you might want to take a look at TechSmith’s Audiate . This advanced audio recorder will transcribe your voice over in real-time and let you edit the audio file as if it were a text-based document. We don’t want to brag, but it’s probably the best way to add a voice over to a PowerPoint .

Regardless of how you decide to narrate your PowerPoint, here’s how to turn your presentation into a video:

1. Import your PowerPoint slides

First, start by importing your PowerPoint slides directly into Camtasia. Once your media is imported, you can edit it by dragging your slides into the Editing Toolbar.

screenshot of how to add powerpoint slides into camtasia

You can now add the images to the Timeline, and edit them like any other media in a Project.

screenshot of powerpoint slides in the camtasia media bin

If you drag your slides to the Timeline, the slides will be placed in the order of the presentation, each with a default 5-second duration.

screenshot of powerpoint slides in the camtasia timline

With your presentation on the timeline, use Ripple Move to create space in between slides to adjust the timing of each one. To do this, hold shift, then click and drag.

screenshot of how to adjust the timing of powerpoint slides in the camtasia timeline

Once you’ve imported your slides and adjusted the duration of each one to correlate with your voice over, it’s time to start editing.

How to edit a presentation video (in Camtasia)

Add behaviors.

Firstly, add some visual interest with Camtasia Behaviors . A Behavior is an animation that brings movement to your slides, making them stand out on screen. This is a great way to bring parts of your presentation to life and take it from ordinary to extraordinary — because nobody likes a boring presentation .

To add a Behavior, click and drag the Behavior you wish to use onto the slide you want to animate. Once added, you can adjust the Behavior using the Properties tab.

Add annotations

Another good way to grab and direct your audience’s attention is to add some Annotations, which are great for highlighting important information.

To insert an Annotation, click the Annotation tab on the left side of the screen and drag it into the designated slide. You can then re-position and edit the Annotation in the Properties tab as needed.

Absolutely! Both Snagit and Camtasia are excellent choices for recording a professional and polished presentation. Snagit is perfect for no-fuss recording and editing. If you require more sophisticated editing capabilities, Camtasia is the ideal choice, offering the added convenience of recording your slideshow and voice over directly within PowerPoint.

Click the Record button in the toolbar to launch your slides into the Presentation Mode and start recording. When you exit Presentation Mode or reach the end of your slideshow, you can either continue recording your screen or stop and save your file.

If you’re planning to record audio, select your microphone in the recording options. The microphone button controls whether or not audio is recorded as part of your presentation. If you have a webcam attached to your computer, you can also record your camera to create a Picture-in-Picture clip, perfect for showing the presenter during the presentation.

With Snagit, you can conveniently record your voice over as you go through your presentation, capturing both the audio and visuals in one go. If you’re looking for more advanced recording and editing options, you might also consider using Camtasia, which allows you to record your voice over while presenting. For even more control, use Audiate to record your audio separately and then import it into Camtasia for fine-tuning.
