In the contemporary era, road safety has emerged as a critical issue demanding immediate and sustained attention. The streets that connect us, facilitating our daily commutes and long-distance travels, also bear witness to tragedies that unfold due to negligence, lack of awareness, and the absence of stringent safety measures. This essay delves into the essence of road safety, exploring its significance, the challenges that impede its implementation, and the comprehensive strategies required to cultivate a culture of safety on our roads.

Road Safety

Road safety refers to the measures and techniques employed to prevent road users from being killed or seriously injured. These users include pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and passengers of public transport vehicles. The importance of road safety cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts human life and health, the efficiency of transportation, and the economic well-being of societies. Despite advancements in vehicle safety features and road engineering, road traffic accidents remain a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety protocols.

Significance of Road Safety

The significance of road safety is multi-faceted, encompassing human, economic, and social dimensions. On a human level, ensuring the safety of road users is a fundamental ethical obligation, as every individual has the right to move freely and safely within public spaces. Economically, road accidents impose a heavy burden on healthcare systems, entail loss of productivity, and necessitate significant resources for emergency response and accident investigation. Socially, the aftermath of road accidents affects communities, leaving families without loved ones and individuals with life-altering injuries. Thus, road safety is integral to the welfare and progress of societies.

Challenges to Road Safety

Achieving road safety is fraught with challenges that are diverse and complex. These include:

  • Human Error: The majority of road accidents are attributed to human error, including distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and reckless behavior.
  • Infrastructure Deficiencies: Inadequate road infrastructure, such as poorly designed intersections, lack of pedestrian crossings, and insufficient lighting, contributes to accidents.
  • Vehicle Safety Standards: Not all vehicles are equipped with the latest safety features, and disparities in vehicle safety standards can increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Lack of Awareness and Education: Many road users are not fully aware of road safety rules or choose to ignore them. The absence of comprehensive road safety education exacerbates this issue.
  • Enforcement of Road Safety Laws: Inconsistent enforcement of traffic laws and regulations undermines efforts to improve road safety.
  • Adhere to Speed Limits: Always obey posted speed limits and adjust your speed according to road conditions, such as weather, visibility, and traffic.
  • Wear Seatbelts: Seatbelts save lives. Ensure that all passengers in the vehicle are wearing seatbelts at all times.
  • Avoid Distractions: Avoid using mobile phones, texting, or engaging in any distracting activities while driving. Keep your full attention on the road.
  • Follow Traffic Rules and Signals: Respect traffic rules, signs, and signals. This includes stopping at red lights, yielding the right of way, and obeying stop signs.
  • Don’t Drive Under the Influence: Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any substances that impair your ability to operate a vehicle safely.
  • Maintain Safe Following Distance: Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you to allow for sudden stops or emergencies.
  • Use Turn Signals: Indicate your intentions by using turn signals to change lanes or make turns, and check blind spots before doing so.
  • Be Cautious at Intersections: Be extra cautious at intersections, where many accidents occur. Look for oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists.
  • Pedestrian Safety: Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and pedestrian zones. Always be aware of pedestrians, especially in areas with heavy foot traffic.
  • Cyclist Safety: Give cyclists enough space on the road and be mindful of bike lanes. Check for cyclists before opening car doors.
  • Motorcycle Safety: Motorcyclists should wear protective gear, including helmets, and other drivers should be attentive to motorcycles on the road.
  • School Zones and Bus Safety: Drive cautiously in school zones, obey speed limits, and stop for school buses when their stop signs are extended.

  • Regular Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is properly maintained with functioning brakes, lights, tires, and other essential components.
  • Avoid Fatigue: Don’t drive when you are tired or drowsy. Fatigue impairs your reaction time and judgment.
  • Respect Vulnerable Road Users: Exercise caution around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, and elderly or disabled individuals who may require extra attention.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Be prepared for emergencies by carrying essential tools, a first-aid kit, and having a way to contact help in case of breakdowns or accidents.
  • Plan Your Route: Plan your route in advance, use GPS navigation if needed, and be aware of road conditions and potential traffic congestion.
  • Don’t Drive Aggressively: Avoid aggressive behaviors such as tailgating, road rage, and excessive speeding. Stay patient and courteous.
  • Promote Road Safety Education: Encourage road safety education and awareness in your community, schools, and workplaces to promote safe driving practices.

Strategies for Enhancing Road Safety

To address these challenges and promote road safety, a multi-pronged approach is necessary:

Strengthening Legislation and Enforcement

Implementing stringent road safety laws and ensuring their strict enforcement can deter risky behaviors. This includes laws related to speeding, drunk driving, helmet and seatbelt usage, and the use of mobile phones while driving.

Improving Road Infrastructure

Investing in road infrastructure to make roads safer for all users is crucial. This involves designing roads that accommodate all users, including pedestrians and cyclists, improving street lighting, and installing traffic calming measures in residential areas.

Enhancing Vehicle Safety

Promoting the use of vehicles equipped with advanced safety features, such as anti-lock braking systems (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), and airbags, can significantly reduce the severity of injuries in accidents. Regular vehicle maintenance and safety inspections are also vital.

Educating Road Users

Comprehensive educational programs targeting drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists can foster a culture of safety. Education initiatives should focus on the importance of road rules, the consequences of risky behaviors, and the benefits of safe practices.

Promoting Safe Driving Practices

Campaigns that encourage safe driving practices, such as defensive driving courses and the use of safety gear (helmets for bikers, seatbelts for car occupants), can play a significant role in reducing accidents.

Community Engagement and Awareness Campaigns

Engaging communities in road safety initiatives and awareness campaigns can heighten awareness about the importance of road safety and motivate individuals to adopt safer behaviors.

Leveraging Technology

Technology can significantly enhance road safety through the development of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), the use of telematics to monitor driving behavior, and the implementation of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to manage traffic flow and reduce congestion.

In conclusion, road safety is an imperative that requires the collective effort of governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, communities, and individuals. By addressing the root causes of road accidents and implementing a holistic approach to road safety, we can significantly reduce the toll of road traffic injuries and deaths. As we move forward, it is crucial that road safety becomes an integral part of national and global agendas, reflecting our commitment to protecting lives and ensuring the well-being of all road users. Let us pledge to make our roads safer, not as a matter of convenience but as a moral and social imperative, to safeguard the future of our communities and the generations to come.

Road Safety Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

Road safety refers to the measures and practices put in place to safeguard the security of road users. It comprises a wide range of activities, such as designing safe road infrastructure, enforcing traffic laws, educating road users, and promoting safe driving behaviours. Road safety aims to mitigate the number of incidents and injuries that occur on the road and to make the experience of driving or walking on the road as safe as possible.

Road Safety Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

Road safety is a significant issue that affects everyone who uses the road, whether they are drivers, pedestrians, or bicyclists. The instances of accidents and injuries that occur on the roads can be reduced by implementing effective road safety measures.

One of the most critical steps in ensuring road safety is the design of safe road infrastructure. This includes the creation of well-lit, well-maintained roads with clear markings and signs, as well as the installation of safety barriers and other protective measures.

Education is also a vital component of road safety. This includes educating drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists about the importance of obeying traffic laws and being aware of their surroundings.

Road safety is a crucial issue that affects us all, as it has a direct impact on the well-being and safety of our communities. Despite the efforts made by governments and other organisations to improve road safety, accidents and injuries continue to occur on our roads.

One of the significant causes of road accidents is reckless and irresponsible driving. Many drivers engage in dangerous behaviours such as drinking alcohol and driving, over-speeding, and not following traffic laws. These behaviours are not only risky for the driver but also can be dangerous for the lives of other road users.

Another major issue is the need for proper infrastructure and road design. Many roads in developing countries are poorly maintained and lack the necessary safety features such as adequate lighting, road markings, and traffic signals. This increases the risk of accidents and makes it difficult for drivers to navigate safely.

Initiatives

To address these issues, there needs to be a concerted effort made by governments, organisations, and individuals to improve road safety. This includes enforcing stricter laws and penalties for reckless driving, implementing better road infrastructure and design, and educating road users on the importance of safe driving behaviours. Technology such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) can also play a significant role in improving road safety. These systems can help prevent accidents by warning drivers of potential hazards and providing them with additional information to make better driving decisions.

Road safety is an issue that has a direct impact on the well-being and safety of our communities. It refers to the measures and practices that are proposed for the safety and well-being of road users. The goal of road safety is to reduce the casualties and injuries that occur on the road and to make the experience of driving or walking on the road as safe as possible.

History of Road Safety

The history of road safety can be traced back to the early 20th century when the first motor vehicles were introduced. At the time, there were no laws or regulations in place to govern the use of these vehicles, and accidents were common. In response to this, governments began to take action by introducing laws and regulations to control the use of motor vehicles.

Measures to Improve Road Safety

Enforcement of Traffic Laws | One of the most effective measures that have been implemented is the enforcement of traffic laws. This includes rules that prohibit dangerous behaviours, such as driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding, as well as laws that require the use of seat belts and helmets.

Designing Safe Road Infrastructure | Another critical measure is the design of safe road infrastructure. This includes the construction of roads with proper lighting, road markings, and traffic signals, as well as the implementation of roundabouts and speed humps to slow down traffic.

Educating Road Users | Education and awareness campaigns play an important role in promoting safe driving behaviours. These campaigns aim to educate road users about the dangers of reckless and irresponsible driving, as well as the importance of following traffic laws.

Current Situation of Road Safety

Reckless and Irresponsible Driving | One of the major causes of road accidents is reckless and irresponsible driving. It is common for drivers to behave dangerously, such as speeding, driving while intoxicated, and not obeying traffic laws.

Lack of Proper Infrastructure and Road Design | Another major issue is the lack of proper infrastructure and road design. Many roads in developing countries are poorly maintained and lack the necessary safety features such as adequate lighting, road markings, and traffic signals.

Lack of Road Safety in Rural Areas | A significant number of accidents happen in rural areas where there is a lack of proper road infrastructure. The lack of road signs, traffic lights, or speed limits can make it difficult for drivers to navigate and increase the risk of accidents.

Challenges in Improving Road Safety | Improving road safety is a very demanding task, and there are several challenges that need to be overcome. These include lack of funding, lack of political will, and resistance to change.

Road safety is a crucial issue that requires the cooperation of all stakeholders. Governments, organisations, and individuals must work together to implement effective measures to improve road safety and decrease the number of fatal accidents on our roads. It is also essential to educate and raise awareness amongst road users about the importance of following traffic laws, safe driving behaviours, and the consequences of reckless and irresponsible driving.

Road safety is important to all of us. It has become a necessary practice to safeguard our lives. Road safety has gained more significance due to the increasing number of vehicles on roads. If we follow the road safety rules properly, many accidents can be prevented.

Wearing helmets, riding vehicles within the appropriate speed limits, and using seat belts are some essential things that everyone should remember. Even the kids in schools are taught the basic rules of road safety, such as understanding the traffic lights and walking on the zebra lines or on the left side of the road.

We should never use cell phones while crossing the road. Practicing the road safety rules is for our own benefit. After all, God has given us this precious gift of life. We must protect it by all means and not make any reckless decision to ruin it.

Introduction:

Road safety refers to the procedures for ensuring safety on our roads. Road users refer to vehicle owners, motorcyclists, commercial vehicles and pedestrians. Lots of lives have been lost and families have been destroyed because of road mishaps. Some of these unfortunate incidents could have been prevented or stopped with proper safety precautions. This article explains how we can stop this menace.

Road Safety Measures:

To minimize common road accidents like car crashes, there are several precautionary road safety steps that can be taken. Make sure that you always wear seat belts when children are in car seats. Also, more importantly, do not get behind any wheel unless you are licensed by your country as fit enough to drive.

Distractions are dangerous while driving and have led to the loss of lives. Hence, speaking on the phone while driving should be prohibited. Health care facilities should be close to roads at different sections and should be sufficiently equipped. These are to aid in providing excellent medical care to road victims.

General Rules Guiding Road Safety:

While the above-mentioned rules are specific, there are some general rules to keep in mind when driving or using public roads in general.

They are as follows:

1. Knowing your signals and paying attention to them whether you are a pedestrian or driver.

2. Using sidewalks and pedestrians crossings.

3. Ensure that you know the rules and laws abiding in the state you drive.

4. Ensure that you have an approved driving license.

Road Safety Sensitization:

It is important to sensitize the general public about the importance of road safety. This will further help create awareness and reduce accident rates and road mishaps. This can be done through seminars and education of children about the rules guiding road safety and consequences of flouting it.

Conclusion:

With strict adherence to road safety rules, it is certain that road casualties can be minimized.

Road safety is a serious issue and it should be considered with strong efforts to curb road accidents and save lives. With the increasing road network, increasing number of vehicles, increasing traffic mess and increasing vehicle speeds, it is very important.

Road Accidents:

Road accidents have become common — everyday media is filled with new road accidents — and fatalities are very high. It is estimated that around 1 million people die each year in road accidents. Pedestrians, cycle riders, bike riders, car and other vehicle users throng the roads daily for everyday chores that puts their lives to risk.

What is Road Safety?

Road safety refers to all efforts to prevent the road accidents and protect the road users from getting injured or killed. The key goal of road safety measures is to minimize the accidents of all kinds.

Traffic Signs and Signals:

Traffic signs are the signs put up to give information and instructions to all road users for their and other’s safety. There are many types of signs for road safety on the roads such as prohibitory, warning, service, information, direction, electric lines, repair work, hospital, school, and so on. Signage also include welcome, express way, freeway, route, street name, toll, road condition, speed limits and cultural signs.

The signals, manual or automated, are also used on the roads to control traffic and pedestrians movement for the safety of all.

All the road users’ need to be educated to follow all the safety rules, traffic signs and signals for their own safety and safety of other road users.

Other Considerations:

For our own safety and other’s safety, all road users need to be sensitized for following the road safety rules. In addition, efforts shall be made for safe road designs, road condition maintenance, safe driving skills, safe vehicle designs and safety gadgets in vehicles to prevent accidents.

The safety of people and resources while on road is what road safety is all about. This may sound like a small subject but it is surprising that we see so many road-related deaths every day in different parts of our country. There are many factors which attribute to this high rate of deaths from not following the rules to ignorance about the importance of road safety. While travelling on roads whether on foot or by using vehicles of our choice we often tend to be very casual in obeying the laws of the land. That is why perhaps so many lives are lost just because of our casual attitude towards road safety.

Road Accident Statistics in India:

On an average, more than 137000 people die of road related accidents in India every year. In fact on a daily basis around 16 children lose their lives on roads in our country. Astonishing, isn’t it? The figures are so high that even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has often shown concerns about it. The top states who witness the most road accident-related deaths are Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

Road Safety Rules in India:

India has the second biggest road network street in the world and records for 10% of overall road-related deaths. Laws controlling the movement out and about are given under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 which is an Act passed by the Parliament of India which came into power from July 1, 1989, and is applicable to all states of India. Even in the year 1914, India has such enactments in place, however, the casual behaviour of the people has always led to the ignorance of these laws leading to frequent violations and casualties.

It is not essential that only the people who have obtained a driving license should be aware of the traffic rules. This is applicable to all the citizens of the country who travel on roads by any means. For instance, we should all know the major road signs and what they mean. It is important to understand the signals at crossings so that we don’t land up between the traffic and injure ourselves and the person driving the vehicle.

Similarly, people walking on foot should always walk on the left side of the road. Moreover, you should be attentive when walking on the road or driving a vehicle. That is why it is always advised that while on road we should keep our mobile phones as well as headphones away and pay attention to the horns of the vehicles instead.

However, people walking on the road with their headphones, at times injure themselves due to their ignorance of what’s happening around. Similarly, talking over phone while driving is a common sign on the roads in India despite the fact that it is a punishable offence.

Farming of laws is not sufficient enough to ensure road safety. We must follow them judiciously as well in order to ensure safety for us as well as others.

Road safety is the measure taken by the government to reduce the accidents and deaths caused by road negligence. Nowadays, harsh driving and careless walking on roads have caused many life-threatening accidents to take place. To avoid such fates it is important to follow certain rules while you step out on a public road.

Basic Rules for Road Safety:

1. The vehicles should travel on the left side of the road giving way to the vehicles coming from the opposite side.

2. While in a turn or bend of the road the drivers should slow down the vehicle for smooth travel and avoid harsh turns.

3. Speed limits assorted to every region and road type should be maintained.

4. Areas like schools and other crowded places are to be passed carefully to avoid crashing on any pedestrians.

5. Drivers of two-wheelers should wear high-quality helmets so that even when an accident takes place they can be protected from serious injuries.

6. Those traveling on four-wheelers should wear seat belts without any fail so that they can be saved from harsh crashes even if an accident occurs.

7. A fixed and considerable distance should be maintained between each vehicle traveling on the road to avoid crashing on the other in case of a sudden breakdown.

8. Study the road safety rules carefully and see for instructions and signs on the road for smooth driving.

9. Pedestrians should follow all the road crossing rules like using the zebra line, following the signals, etc., while crossing a road.

These are some of the basic rules to be followed while traveling. Following these safety rules will help to prevent and protect you from most of the accidents caused due to carelessness and hence ensures road safety.

Spread Awareness:

Proper awareness and education about road safety and rules will help a lot in this case. People who cross the roads in most of the odd times and those who exceed the speed limits or overtake in busy areas should be made aware of the situation where all their lives are at serious threat hurrying to reach the destiny.

This awareness can be spread through seminars, workshops, awareness programs, etc. In most cases, students and teenagers are those who tend to break the rules and risk their lives. It is important to educate them about road safety and the precautions to be taken. The best way to make this happen is by adding a road safety topic in their study syllabus and starting from the basics.

Defensive driving techniques should be compulsorily taught to all those who get their driving license so that they can be aware and handle difficult situations. Understanding road signs are the basics everyone should be known, whether the driver or a person walking on the road. Following the road safety measures will not only benefit your life but also the life of others who walk or travel with you.

Slow and steady wins the race. The same can be told in case of road travels. Slow and controlled traveling will help you to reach your place more safely than speeding and risking your life. Get proper knowledge on road safety before starting your outdoor travel or even a walk.

Road safety is one of the issues that is never stressed enough and this is the main cause why lives of people get endangered on the road really fast. Being cautious on the road is a trait that every driver has to learn before they step behind the wheel of the car. Most of us know the road safety procedures and rules and when we drive, we respect the lives of others as we do for our own but sometimes there are reckless drivers that we can do little against.

Some findings and figures about road safety can help us understand what exactly makes this issue so important for public safety.

Facts about Road Safety:

Every year more than one million people die because of lack of the knowledge about road safety which causes car accidents and up to fifty million people that are involved end up injured or disabled. One of the major road safety issues are the lives of pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclist that get endangered in half of the car crashes.

Besides the human cost of car crashes, there is an economic dimension and research shows that up to 4% of the Gross National Product is spent on road safety issues. One of the best road safety tips is to put on a seat belt and the statistics show that you reduce your chance of dying in a car crash by 61% if you do so. We often drive with our children in the car and road safety is equally important for them too that includes the mandatory use of child restraints, this method has reduced the number of child deaths by 35%.

Even though wearing a helmet is not intended for car drivers it is still an important road safety rule, that is this rule is meant for the other drivers on the road like cyclists and bike drivers. And we should not forget that alcohol is the biggest enemy of road safety, there is even an estimate that a world-wide ban on drunk driving could reduce the number of crashes by 20%.

The Importance of Road Safety:

The facts about road safety tells it all and we can do a lot to make driving a much safer occupation. The reasons why road safety is so important are multiple, first of all, it will save human lives. Secondly, it can reduce the amount of public spending related to road safety issues.

What Can We do to ensure Road Safety?

One great comparison shows that for every kilometer per hour decrease in the driving speed, there is a reduction of 2% in the chance of occurrence of a car accident. The other thing that we can do to improve road safety is to use simple engineering methods in the design of the roads, that will make people more aware when they drive and more conscious of their mistakes. Such solutions are low in cost and very efficient and many countries have invested in their implementation.

Basically, the best thing we can do is to be informed about driving rules and to follow them throughout, no matter what the situation is. Learning to drive is an important part of every young person’s life and sooner or later we all have to do it. Once we do get on the road, we have to be responsible and through that, we can ensure the safety of others.

Road safety is important for all drivers and the evidence that we should make a bigger effort to make traffic safe for all is compelling. The answer to this problem is in all our hands, every time we sit behind the wheel and start driving.

Road accidents happen every day. The emphasis on road safety has been made to ensure that the number of road accidents reduce. Road accidents are fatal and have far much more consequences. Road safety involves methods of preventing injuries for pedestrians, motorists, cyclists and everyone else that uses the road. The global statistics on road safety reveals that approximately 231000 people die from road traffic accidents in India annually.

On road, the people mostly affected by traffic accidents are pedestrians, motorists and cyclists. Due to these consequences, road safety measures have been put in place to regulate the road users and reduce the incidences of accidents in Indian roads. WHO has intervened in the road safety measures formulation and implementation.

Road Safety Projects in India:

Road safety in India has become a challenge and that is why projects are ongoing to restore safety in roads for all road users. The projects are supported by different organizations including the WHO (world Health Organization) and the Indian government. The projects are aimed at increasing public awareness about road safety, facilitating law enforcement and implementations regarding road safety, advocating for safety behaviour and addressing road safety issues.

Another project by WHO to enhance road safety in India is to promote motorcycle helmets and reducing drunk driving among citizens. The project was implemented in three cities including Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam. Legislation through the review of road safety rules and regulation of motorcycles act enabled amendments that ensured road safety in India.

Social marketing was also supported by WHO. The social marketing involved mass campaigns for road safety on social media and communication with the target audience in large populations. The use of mass media in public awareness is very efficient because the audience is broad and the message is clearly communicated to the public.

Importance of Road Safety:

Road safety is important in mitigating consequences of accidents on roads . Road safety is implemented through road safety rules. There are rules for every road user. Rules on over speeding, keeping to the left or right, caution on the surrounding environment and traffic lights cut across for all countries in road safety regulation. Adherence to these rules is important so as to minimize road accidents.

It is important to enhance road safety so as to preserve life for citizens through reduction of road related deaths. Road accidents are fatal and should be prevented by following rules when using the roads. Road safety is also important for the maintenance of infrastructure. Accidents on roads cause destruction of the roads, road signs and property that crashes. The rehabilitation of infrastructure is costly and brings about unnecessary spending.

The use of road safety measures ensures economic growth and stability. Most deaths in India are caused by road accidents kill the youth. The youth form the majority of the working nation and continuous deaths affects the performance of a nation. Also, due to the expenses incurred during treatment of injuries and rehabilitation resulting from road accidents, the economy is negatively affected.

Challenges in Maintaining Road Safety in India:

Maintaining road safety is a governmental task that faces challenges during implementation of strategies. The government of India lacks resources to enact road safety regulations. Putting up road signs that govern safety in roads is costly and the campaigns and projects are also expensive.

Fragmented systems of managing road safety in India cause inefficient road safety regulation. The government formulates different rules that do not relate with each other and this causes collision between the regulation processes. Also, the systems are inadequate and are deprived of resources to support road safety enhancement and sustainability. Addressing traffic issues has not been efficient in India because of violation of traffic rules by road users.

Lack of awareness by the public on road safety is a major challenge. Children have to be taught on road safety rules in order to enhance safety for them on the roads. Also, mass media campaigns on road safety are not as frequent as they should be. People always need a reminder of traffic safety rules so that adherence can be achieved.

In conclusion, road safety is an issue that has impacts on the lives of citizens and the nation as a whole. Road safety measures are put in place so as to ensure that there is safety for all road user. Road accidents cause deaths and injuries to people in India and higher incidences are experienced when traffic rules are violated. The road safety management in India is supported by the government however, there are challenges that compromise road safety.

Road safety can basically be defined and explained as the safety and guidance of all people from road accidents and road side injuries . Road safety involves a variety of measures and methods that must be and are followed by the users of the road so as to prevent different accidents and serious injury. There is the utmost need for us to pay proper attention to road safety whether it is vehicles we are using or other means of road transportation. Research findings have shown that students and most especially children are the groups that are most vulnerable to accidents on the road leading to major or minor injuries and sometimes even death largely due to the complete absence or inadequacy of supervision by an adult.

Historical Background:

One of the major problems of injury prevention and public health is road crashes. The problem of road crash is a lot more serious because most of the victims of these crashes are always healthy before the crash. The World Health Organisation have put forward that the number of people that are killed every year as a result of road accidents is way above one million.

The World Health Organisation also published a report in 2004 that the estimated number of people that are killed in car crashes each year is 1.2 million and the number of people that were left injured due to traffic collisions every year was about 50 million. Road accidents were also found to be the major cause of the death of people (children) between the ages of 10 and 19 years old. It was also stated in the report that developing countries were the biggest contributors to the large numbers and the amount of deaths can be reduced by more than half if simple preventive measures can be taken.

Vehicle Safety:

There are a lot of ways through which we can improve road safety that depends on the various means of transport taken.

Some of the ways include:

1. Buses and Coaches:

There are a lot of ways we can improve safety which would in turn lower the chances of the occurrence of accidents. If we avoid standing in places that are not safe in the coach or bus and also avoid rushing and we follow all the set rules of the coach or bus, the road safety of the passengers will be greatly increased. There are numerous safety measures and features that can be adopted to improve the safety in coaches and buses including the inclusion of safety bars that people can hold onto.

Some of the road safety measures that can be adopted on coaches and buses include:

i. Endeavour to leave your place early enough so that there is no need to run in order to catch the coach or bus.

ii. Following the queue at the bus station or bus stop is important.

iii. There should not be any situation where you get off a bus while it is still in motion or get on it at an unofficial hour.

iv. A bus or coach should never be boarded or gotten off at an unauthorised station or bus stop or at a crossing of red light.

v. Buses should only be boarded after they have come to a full halt without pushing others or rushing.

vi. The bus’ footboard is not a place to stand or sit.

vii. Any body part should not be put outside the bus whether moving or stationary.

viii. There should not be any form of noise making or shouting that might distract and confuse the driver.

ix. If one is standing in the bus, one should hold the handrail most especially where the bus is turning.

x. All the safety rules of the bus should be adhered to.

We can improve safety in cars by lowering the odds of an error occurring on the part of the driver, also by the design of vehicles that reduce the extent of damage caused by crashes. Countries that are industrialised have special specifications and requirements for vehicle systems, devices, construction and design that are safety related.

Some of them are:

i. The deployment of passenger restraints like airbags and seat belts that are enforced with laws that require their use.

ii. Equipments that helps in the avoidance of crash like reflectors and lights.

iii. Systems that are driver assistance-enabled must have stability in electronic control.

iv. Some designs  should be there for crash survivability like interior materials that are fire retardant, safety glass use and systems of fuel integrity.

v. Sobriety detectors are really great, they interlock and prevent ignition if the breath of the driver is detected to have a significant amount of alcohol. Companies that are involved in commercial transportation use sobriety detectors for their drivers and sobriety detectors are also suggested to offenders of drunk-driving voluntarily.

3. Motorbikes:

Statistics from the United Kingdom have shown that there is a nine times more likelihood of motorbike riders to be involved in road crashes than the car drivers. Also, motorbike riders have a seventeen times more likelihood to die as a result of road crashes than the car drivers. This high risk is largely due to the absence and sometimes inadequacy of the crash protection available for motorbikes unlike the protection available for enclosed vehicles.

Also, motorbikes usually travel at high speeds and this can be dangerous. US statistics have put forward numbers that show that more intoxicated motorbike riders are involved in crashes that are fatal than all other forms of accident on the road. Helmets are also very important in motorbike safety. It was estimated that helmets only have an efficiency rate of 37 percent in the saving of lives during motorbike crashes.

The transport department of the famed European commission put forward a report that has put the estimate of accidents that involves truck as a result of the inadequate securing of cargos at 25 percent. When cargos are not properly secured, there can be loss of human lives, vehicles, cargo and so many more.

Road safety is paramount in our modern lives. Everyone bears the responsibility of securing the roads, safeguarding not only themselves but also others. The rising count of accidents and fatalities is a concerning trend, underscoring the increased importance of road safety education and awareness.

To start, it’s imperative to follow traffic rules and regulations diligently. This entails abiding by speed limits, obeying traffic signals, and yielding to pedestrians and other vehicles. Disregarding these regulations can result in accidents, injuries, and tragic loss of life.

Wearing seat belts is another pivotal aspect of road safety. Seat belts have been scientifically proven to decrease the risk of injury and death in the event of a collision. All occupants in a vehicle must be consistently belted up, regardless of their seating position.

Eliminating distractions while driving is equally significant. Activities such as texting or conversing on the phone divert attention from the road and lead to accidents. Maintaining focus and abstaining from electronic devices while driving is a necessity.

Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs remains a substantial contributor to road accidents. Impaired judgement and slowed reaction times can have catastrophic consequences. The abstinence from drinking and driving, along with promoting this among peers and family, is crucial.

Routine vehicle maintenance is also a part of road safety. Regularly inspecting brakes, tires, lights, and other critical components can help avert accidents resulting from mechanical failures.

Pedestrian safety carries equal weight. Pedestrians should utilise designated crosswalks, stay alert to their surroundings, and avoid jaywalking. Drivers, in turn, must be vigilant toward pedestrians and yield right of way.

In summary, road safety is a collective responsibility. It does not solely rest on authorities or law enforcement but upon each individual. Adhering to traffic regulations, avoiding distractions, and acting responsibly on the road are instrumental in reducing accidents and preserving our safety. Table of Contents

Not adhering to the rules of Road Safety is a big problem for us at present. Today we are living in an age of science, where vehicles for transportation are increasing day by day, whose speed has also increased a lot. Even a small mistake while driving the vehicle proves fatal to the person and us in front.

Let me tell you a real-life story about road safety-

We can drive vehicles at speeds of 150-200 per hour and above, but we cannot control it properly because of which road accidents occur.

I had a friend John Wilson who was riding a bike one day at a fast pace and was talking to a friend on mobile; he hit the truck on the wrong side as soon as the bike turned.

John’s attention was neither on the signal nor on the truck coming from the front, because of which he broke his arm and he had to stay in the hospital for 7 days.

The truck driver’s intelligence saved John’s life. But my friends, I want to tell you that people who do not follow the rules of the road are always not as lucky as John. Sometimes people themselves are killed because of these mistakes and become the reason for the death of others.

How Avoiding Road Safety Affects Daily Life?

According to who’s report.

India has the second-highest number of road accidents in the world. India accounts for 10 percent of the deaths for road accidents in the world. China is also the most populous country on this list.

Road Traffic Mortality in India

In 2009, there were 14.60 persons per 1 lakh. Which increased to 14.6 in 2013. This rate is higher in high-income countries. 8.4 per 1 lakh and India’s road accident mortality rate is much higher than middle-income neighbors.

The highest percentage of road accidents in India occur in Uttar Pradesh and the lowest in Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, this rate of road safety continuously decreasing while in Uttar Pradesh it is not.

Most accidents in India occur with young people. In 2016, 60% of people who died in an accident in India were aged between 18 and 35 years.

Throughout the world, 1.3 million people die every year in road accidents, of which 1 lakh people die in India alone. It is estimated that if this situation prevails, by 2020, this number will be 20 lakh people per year in the entire world and will reach 2 lakh people in India.

Main Causes of Road Accidents in India

  • Self-publicist
  • Speedy driving
  • Drunk driving
  • Infrastructure

1. Self-publicist

To show themselves better than others, people show their stunts while driving, for which a slight lapse leads to a road accident. Because of which they are killed along with the person in front. We should drive vehicles wisely.

2. Speedy Driving

In India, driving at the speed of overspending is also becoming an obsession. Day by day, as over one high-speed vehicle has come in the country, the number of accidents for over-speeding has increased for their running. Many people have died in the road accident because of high speed.

3. Overtake

While driving on the road, people do not consider themselves less than a racer, and overtaking is their skill. Overtaking in the right way is not wrong but overtaking wrongly is not right. You are in danger, but you also endanger the lives of others on the road.

4. Drunk Driving

Drunk and drive, meaning drunk driving. The main cause of road accidents in India is ‘drink and drive’. And its trend is increasing among the youth and few people are going through the adventure of death in the streets of the drunken street.

5. Infrastructure

Some infrastructure factors influencing road safety-

  • Narrow turn of the road
  • The median concrete structure of Road
  • Roadside very steep slope
  • Very Poor road signage
  • Road Gaps-in-median
  • Unsafe Entry/Exit road
  • Driver vision obstruction on the Road
  • Curb stones on the road
  • Unorganized Guardrail end taper
  • Flowerpots in the median of the road

How to Follow Road Safety Rules Properly?

1. do not drive a vehicle in the high speed.

The bike is the fastest vehicle in road transport. While riding the bike, we should look in front and run carefully. Do not talk on mobile while riding a motorcycle. Even if there is no traffic, we should not drive at high speed.

2. Follow the Traffic Rules

The maximum of the accidents occurs because of the non-observance of traffic rules and carelessness. Keeping the rules of traffic in mind while driving the vehicle will avoid accidents. We should obey the traffic police instruction.

Only after the green light is on, move the vehicle forward at the intersection. While driving, the car or 4-wheeler always ties the seat belt and speak to the person sitting with you.

Children below 18 years of age do not drive. Parents should always keep in mind. We should use the indicator when turning.

Without a proper driving license, do not drive any vehicle. It is a big offence, and it may cause road accidents.

3. Do Not Drive a Vehicle After Drinking Alcohol

Never drive a vehicle after drinking, it is not only dangerous for you, but it can prove fatal for the person in front too. If you have drunk alcohol, tell your friend to drive the vehicle. Even if your house is close, you should not take risks.

4. Do Not Use Headphones

Never use headphones while driving a vehicle, so all your attention is spent talking on the call, and then an accident occurs.

5. Drive Carefully

Other vehicles are coming around you. Be aware of this and expect the unexpected. If you are traveling long distances, rest every 2 hours so you can drive the vehicle carefully.

Action Was Taken by the Indian Government for Road Safety

The Parliament of India recently passed amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act. But the maximum effective location from 1 September 2019. The main reason for this is to reduce road accidents in India.

For this, the penalty for most mistakes was 10 times higher than before for not following the traffic rules in the new instructions. So that people follow the traffic rules more and more for fear of punishment.

Together we should all be aware of road safety, and our children should also learn to follow traffic rules. Only then will we be able to reduce the ever-increasing road accidents, so we will also be safe and the person in front will also be reliable.

Importance Of Road Safety (Essay Sample)

Importance of road safety.

Everyday dozens of lives are lost in our roads as a result of careless driving, over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or even using mobile phones while driving or crossing the road by pedestrians. All these causes of fatal accidents on our roads could be prevented through embracing or adhering to road safety measures. Road safety focuses on safety for all road users be it pedestrians, animal-drawn vehicles, two-wheel travellers and multi-wheel transport. Road safety is beneficial in many ways as it reduces the number of lives claimed by fatal accidents, reduces the costs arising from accidents and also third party traumas.

By observing road safety measures by every road user, drivers and road users can save millions of lives that could be lost through fatal road accidents. According to National Safety Council (2017), approximately forty thousand lives were lost in American roads in the year 2016 representing a 6% increase from the previous year. Forty thousand is a significant number of lives to be lost due to road accidents that could be prevented through adherence to road safety. Most of the road accidents accounting for the forty thousand lives lost were as a result of drivers speeding and texting while driving. This is a clear indication that the drivers do not observe road safety measures and if they had, then these lives would have been saved. Also, most of the road accidents involve pedestrians being knocked by speeding vehicles on the highways. Pedestrians are to blame for such accidents as they do not observe safety rules that guide them on where to cross the roads or the lanes to uses while walking by the road. When road safety measures are followed carefully, most lives would be saved.

Also, road safety is important because it reduces a couple of costs that are incurred when accidents occur on our roads. There are numerous financial losses that accrue from a road accident. There are physical damages on the road infrastructure and the roadside properties. Towing and recovery costs are incurred. When a road accident occurs, there are costs incurred on traffic police who attend the scene to clear the crashed vehicles and the bodies of the deceased victims. Also the emergency departments incur costs while attending to the victims and offering first aid. Costs could also arise from medical bills and ambulance hiring. Aside, if a major crash occurred on a highway, the road would be blocked for a couple of minutes to hours as the scene is being cleared. Delays will occur and businesses experience loses. Losses in time and money occur automatically. Road safety would prevent all these costs as it would minimize the occurrence of the accidents in the first place.

Moreover, road safety prevents loss of lives which would prevent traumas suffered by the family members, relatives and friends. Family members have to come to terms with unexpected loss which triggers emotional suffering. Family members will be pondered by many unanswered questions; how did this accident occur? Could it have been prevented? Did the deceased contribute to the accident? These questions are a clear indication of the traumatic experience that family members, relatives and friends undergo when a road accident maims their loved one. Furthermore, a road accident will claim a bread winner for a family and the dependents will lose their source of income, a further trauma. Road accidents leave orphans behind who may suffer for the rest of their lives. All these traumatic and long lasting emotional impacts on the family members and friends to the deceased could be prevented by simple road safety measures.

The importance of the road safety cannot be underestimated as they can be much significant in minimizing loss of lives due to accidents, reducing the costs arising from accident occurrences and preventing the traumatic experiences by the family members and friends to those whose lives have been claimed by road accidents.

Road Safety Essay – 7 (1000 Words)

“Road Safety” today is one of the greatest public health issues throughout the globe. Millions lives are lost annually because of fatality arising due to road accidents, and the clock is ticking constantly. “Road safety” cannot be undermined if the world wants to achieve goals of sustainable development, prosperity and growth. The issue concerns all types of road users – pedestrians, motorists, motorcyclists etc, as well as unauthorized road side vendors and other encroachers. In the following essay we will know the significance of “Road Safety” and how staying safe on road is imperative for a happy and healthy and prosperous life, of an individual as well as that of the nation.

What does “Road Safety” Means?

“Road Safety” refers to the safety of the user while using the road. There are defined rules and procedures to be followed while using the road and it’s mandatory to abide by them to ensure a safe transit. Such “Road Safety Rules” have been laid by the respective governments in order to ensure the safety of every road user. Traffic signals, sign boards, security cameras, dividers, foot paths are some of the tools to ensure Road Safety.

Road Safety Concern – Global Statistics

Global stats on Road Safety reveal large variations based on a nation’s population, economy and state of general public awareness. Developed countries ensure much better road safety through a large network of roads and precautionary measures. Contrastingly, the situation is grim in developing and underdeveloped countries.

Statistics reveal that approximately 1.5 Million lives are lost every year globally due to road accidents; more than 90% of which occur in under developed and developing nations. More than half of the figure constitutes of vulnerable road users like pedestrians, motorcyclists and cyclists.

Apathy towards road safety causes the death of maximum number of children and youth, than by any other cause. That is not all – nearly 20 to 50 Million people suffer non fatal injuries, often resulting in a permanent disability.

Road Safety – Importance

The importance of Road Safety cannot be undermined if the agendas of sustainable development are to be met. A fatal road accident results in a trauma not only for the victim, but also for his/her dependants and loved ones. On the other note, road crashes in most of the countries cost 3% of their overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

If a victim of a fatal accident is lucky to survive, he/she is most likely to have any kind of disability. Thus a road mishap is not only a strain on the victim’s financial resources but also on the nation’s as well; not to mention the emotional trauma to the dependents.

Therefore, appropriate measures must be taken to implement road safety and to ensure safe transit for every road user. Ensuring road safety is very important and must be prioritized by the governments as well as individuals.

Factors Compromising Road Safety and Counter Measures

There are various factors those compromise road safety. Driver’s behavior; apathy towards traffic rules; unruly behavior, negligence, road rage are some of the main factors compromising road safety. Below we will go through some of the main causes of road accidents-

1) User’s behaviour

A road is used by variety of users – pedestrians, motorcyclists, cyclists and motorists. An unruly driver compromises not only his own life but also the life of others. A driver, who jumps a signal, either habitually or unknowingly, could seriously kill or fatally injure pedestrian or other drivers. Even a careless pedestrian can bring doom upon himself and others. Any unruly behavior must be dealt with strictly to avoid it getting repeated. Imposing large fines on jumping signals and similar misconducts could bring down the number of road mishaps.

2) Unauthorized/Adolescent Drivers

Lack of driving experience is a prime cause behind the deaths of children and youths belonging to the age group of 15 to 25. In under developed and developing countries, licenses are issued to children below permissible age limit, violating the law. Such adolescent and unauthorized drivers tend to be unruly, risking their own life and also the life of others. Teenagers tend to over speed and violate traffic rules, just for sheer pleasure and false praises. Teach your children that driving before the permissible age is not only an offence, but is also life threatening. Report any underage driver to the authorities.

3) Drunken Driving

Drunken driving claims millions of lives globally. Low and middle income group countries are the worst affected. Alcohol impacts a driver’s behaviour and his ability to make judgments. A Drunken driver tends to me more unruly and uncontrolled on the road. All in all, alcohol weakens the necessary skills to drive, risking lives on road. Even a drunken pedestrian is a potential threat to his own as well as other’s safety. Strict laws and a policy of zero tolerance against drunken driving should be implemented in order to make the roads safer.

4) Avoiding Safety Gears

Not wearing helmet, avoiding safety belts causes maximum number of casualties resulting from a road crash. People either habitually avoid wearing safety equipments or do it on purpose, not realizing that it could mean all the difference between life and death. More than 90% casualties in a road mishap occur due to not wearing helmet or seat belt. Vehicle safety gears are the mandatory for road safety, and must be worn at any cost. There is a need to raise general awareness about the use of safety gears and their significance in saving lives. Wearing safety equipments while driving should be made mandatory and violators must be prosecuted strictly.

5) Poor Infrastructure

Poor infrastructure often results in road accidents and is a major factor compromising road safety. The numbers are greater in underdeveloped and developing nations. Uncompleted roads, road side construction, unfinished pavements, absence of foot over bridges are some of the infrastructural shortages contributing to road accidents. Relevant authorities should take measures to speed up any unfinished work, which concerns the safety of road users. Proper illumination and road signs must be provided on construction sites to avoid any mishap.

Road safety is a global public health issue and must be ensured by relevant authorities. Respective governments must take necessary policy and administrative measures to ensure as well as improve safety on roads. Better infrastructure of roads with sufficient illumination should be provided in order to ensure safety. Above all, there is a need for us to be concerned about our own safety and conduct while using the road.

Essay on Traffic and Road Safety

Essay on Traffic and Road Safety

Road safety is the way in which we avoid accidents on roads. Methods of reducing risk and promoting road safety include safe driving practices, seat belt laws, speed limits, drunk driving penalties, following traffic signals etc. The essay on traffic and road safety discusses different ways to reduce the number of accidents on roads. One way is to make sure that drivers don’t use their cell phones while driving. Another way is to install blind spot mirrors in front of and behind buses so that they can keep an eye on children crossing the street if there isn’t a pedestrian crossing nearby. Other ways to reduce the number of accidents is by increasing the number of carpool lanes and restricting the use of these lanes to vehicles with more than one passenger. The government should also implement policies that make it easier for people to use public transportations such as buses and trains.

Neighbourhoods with more traffic also have more accidents and injuries. To address these issues, cities are making special efforts to reduce traffic in dangerous areas by enforcing speed limits and using directional arrows. The government has several solutions for this problem, such as stricter laws for drunk driving, speed cameras, and stricter penalties for reckless driving. These strategies have been less successful in developing countries like India, where too many vehicles are on the roads. Now, let us read the importance of following traffic laws by referring to BYJU’S essay on traffic rules and road safety.

Importance of Road Safety

Road safety is critical for all countries and regions. Most accidents involve vehicles travelling at 80km/h or more. An essay on traffic and road safety helps understand the significance of road safety awareness .

While many people think road safety is only about being safe on the road, it is not true. Being safe on the road includes knowing what to wear while driving and how to stay alert while travelling. Drivers should remain calm while driving, know what to do if they get a flat tire, and know when to change lanes.

It is the responsibility of every road user to ensure their safety and the safety of other people sharing the road. If we are driving at night and it’s raining, it is crucial to maintain a slow speed because it would be easy to slip on a wet road. We also need to keep our distance from other vehicles and follow the posted speed limits.

Importance of Following Traffic Rules

After reading the importance of road safety, let us understand the significance of following traffic rules by reading BYJU’S essay on traffic rules and road safety. It is important to follow traffic rules as they are in place to ensure the safety of all drivers as well as passengers. This includes tracking speed limits, yielding at intersections, and driving in the correct direction on one-way streets. If someone decides not to follow these traffic laws, it could cause a collision that injures the driver and those around them.

To conclude, road safety and traffic rules are not just for the drivers but also for pedestrians, cyclists, bike riders and others. Rules are designed to keep everyone safe. Let us drive safe and not cause harm to others. For more essays, GK questions , questions and worksheets , visit BYJU’S website.

Danger can come at any moment and any place. We are unaware as to when it will attack us. So having safety is our first and foremost priority. This will help us to tackle any emergency when needed.

Short Essay on Safety First in 200 Words

Safety means any kind of protection that we observe regularly. And safety first also means making safety our biggest priority. Maintaining safety is extremely important to us. It will keep our family and society safe and sound.

The country must have responsible citizens who can maintain safety. So being safe is for the good of everyone. We must always maintain safety measures. Be it in our home or outside, it will help us to live much better. Today we observe how difficult it is to walk peacefully on the roads. It is because people do not follow safety measures.

Some bike riders drive very rashly. They do not care about the pedestrians or people walking on the road. Often it creates accidents. These accidents are fatal and can kill them as well. The drivers do not consider driving safely and slowly. They drive the car or the bus at full speed. As a result, many people daily meet accidents on the roads.

Even animals are not free of these dangers. Little kids and aged people feel scared to go alone on the roads. Even in our homes, we forget to follow safety measures. So we face several problems and are hurt severely. The dangers can become serious if we ignore our safety. So safety first is our greatest duty to everyone in our country.

Short Essay on Safety First in 400 Words

Safety means protection from any sort of danger. The term safety first is, at present, a frequently used term. Safety is something that we prioritize first. Whenever there is danger, we must take an immediate measure of safety to survive the situation. Thus keeping safety as our biggest priority is the best task to do in our lives. We will stay prepared for any hazards that may arrive on our way.

Unfortunately, people nowadays do not consider safety as the primary need. As a result, we often face severe disasters. The biggest danger takes place outside our homes when we are on the road. The bike riders dive their bikes at high speed. They drive rashly over the roads and highways. Hence it becomes very difficult for the aged and the pedestrians to walk on the roads.

Anytime they can meet an accident, and can also die on spot. Similarly, for other vehicles like a bus or a car, we observe the same picture. The buses collide with other trucks and cars while breaking the traffic rules. It is a bad habit to violate the traffic rules and traffic signals for personal benefits. Maintaining safety on roads is for the benefit of everyone. We must follow the signals and use a zebra crossing while moving to a different route. Walking in between vehicles in a hurry or jumping down a bus while it’s moving can cause serious harm.

Even on rail lines, we must be cautious. It is always advisable never to cross a rail line while a train is approaching. Similarly, standing near the door while the train is running at full speed can cause tremendous destruction. Some people often take selfies while standing on railways and even use them as fun places. However, it is stupid to take such things lightly. Everyone should remember the safety that can help them to live better.

Safety first applies to our household as well. If there is a little child or an aged person in the house, then these safety measures become very important. One must keep away all sharp objects, fire, oil, and other poisonous goods from their reach. Burners and cylinders should be switched off to avoid any danger. The doors should be closed so that babies cannot crawl outside the house.

Also, basic hygiene is a part of safety. Keeping the house clean will make it safe. Keeping a first aid box and some emergency medicines will protect us from any immediate need. Hence these basic yet important tips can enable us to live better.

Indian teen who killed 2 while allegedly drink driving ordered to write essay as punishment

essay writing on road safety

PUNE, India – Anger is growing in India after a teenager who allegedly killed two people while drink driving was ordered to write an essay as punishment, with many demanding a harsher penalty and accusing the judiciary of leniency.

The 17-year-old boy was allegedly speeding in a Porsche in the city of Pune on May 19 when the vehicle hit a motorcycle, killing two people, according to Maharashtra state’s deputy chief minister, Mr Devendra Fadnavis.

The minor was taken into custody and later presented to the Juvenile Justice Board, where he was released on bail and given 15 days of community service. He was also asked to write an essay about road safety, Mr Fadnavis said.

“The outrage grew after this. According to police, the boy is 17 years and eight months. This is a heinous crime,” he told reporters on May 21, pointing to the 2015 changes to India’s juvenile laws, which allow children above 16 to be tried as adults if they allegedly commit a “heinous” crime.

“This was a surprising order passed (by the Juvenile Justice Board),” Mr Fadnavis said.

CNN has attempted to contact the alleged driver’s lawyer Prashant Patil for comment.

Mr Fadnavis added that Pune police are investigating the minor for alleged culpable homicide not amounting to murder. They have also asked the Juvenile Court to review its bail order, he said.

CCTV video, purportedly filmed moments before the crash, shows a white Porsche speeding down a busy main road. People can be seen rushing to the scene of the crash, which is not pictured in the video that was shared widely on social media and broadcast on local news channels.

The minor’s father has been arrested for allegedly allowing his son to drive despite the boy being underage, according to Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar. The legal driving age in India is 18.

Three people who served the minor liquor have also been arrested, Mr Kumar added.

“We have adopted the most stringent possible approach, and we shall do whatever is at our command to ensure that the two young lives that were lost get justice, and the accused gets duly punished,” he said.

The incident has dominated headlines in India and sparked widespread anger, with many taking to social media to condemn the boy’s bail conditions.

Mr Suresh Koshta, whose 24-year-old daughter was killed in the crash, urged the authorities to take tougher action against the alleged driver.

“It was wrong (to allow the minor to drive),” he told reporters outside his home, while fighting back tears. “One needs to know how to drive first.”

Mr Rahul Gandhi, the leader of India’s main opposition, the Indian National Congress, questioned whether a bus or taxi driver would be given the same punishment.

“If a 16-17-year-old son of a wealthy household, driving a Porsche under the influence, is caught, he is asked to write an essay,” he said on X. “Why aren’t essays assigned to truck drivers or bus drivers?”

This isn’t the first time a court’s verdict has been scrutinised in this manner.

In 2015, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, who was facing a lengthy prison sentence for a fatal hit-and-run, got a reprieve when the Mumbai High Court tossed out his conviction for lack of evidence, causing widespread outrage.

“On basis of evidences produced by the prosecution, the appellant cannot be convicted, no matter how differently the common man thinks,” the court said.

The hit-and-run incident took place outside a Mumbai bakery in September 2002, with prosecutors saying Khan ran over five sleeping men after losing control of his vehicle. He was returning from a bar after a night of drinking, they said.

The actor said he wasn’t the driver.

One of the victims was killed, the others injured. CNN

Public outrage as indian porsche-driving teenager ordered to write essay for allegedly killing 2.

The Straits Times reports that the accident took place in Pune on May 19, when the teenager, reportedly driving at high speed, crashed into a motorcycle. He was detained and later presented to the Juvenile Justice Board. After being granted bail, he was ordered to complete 15 days of community service and write an essay on road safety.

This ruling has triggered significant controversy, with critics arguing that the sentence is excessively lenient given the seriousness of the crime.

Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, the state where Pune is located, expressed astonishment at the ruling, referencing the 2015 amendments to India’s juvenile laws, which permit treating individuals older than 16 as adults in cases involving "heinous" crimes.

"According to [the] police, the boy is 17 years and eight months [old]," Fadnavis stated to journalists. "This is a heinous crime."

In light of the widespread uproar, the minor’s lawyer Prashant Patil informed reporters on Wednesday that the Juvenile Justice Board has amended the teenager’s bail conditions, mandating his stay in a rehabilitation facility until June 5, according to CNN . The minor will undergo counseling as well, added Patil.

Additionally, Pune police have started an investigation into the accident on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The father of the teenage driver has been arrested for allowing his son to drive the vehicle.Furthermore, the owner and an employee of the pub where the teenager consumed alcohol have been detained for serving alcohol to a minor, as reported by The Times of India .

Authorities are also pursuing two more individuals in connection with the case.

Security camera footage captured shortly before the incident depicts the Porsche speeding on a crowded main street. The scene quickly captured public and media attention, with videos spreading across social media and local news outlets.

In India, the legal age to drive is 18.

An Indian court granted bail to an affluent 17-year-old accused of killing a couple when he crashed his Porsche in the western city of Pune, leading to outrage on social media.

The judge asked the teenager, who is alleged to have been drunk at the time of the incident, to write an essay on road safety and do voluntary traffic work.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the student, whose identity cannot be revealed under the country’s juvenile law, was out with friends in the luxury car.

He was allegedly drunk and travelling more than 200kph when he crashed into Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24, who were on a motorcycle.

Ms Koshta was thrown into the air by the force of the crash, witnesses told police.

Mr Awadhiya also crashed into parked cars. Ms Koshta and Mr Awadhiya died of their injuries.

The teenage driver and a friend were caught by passers-by who attacked them before police arrived. Another person who was in the car was said to have escaped.

Police registered a case of manslaughter against the teenager.

The Juvenile Justice Board, a special court where minors are tried, granted him bail within 14 hours on several conditions, including working alongside traffic police for 15 days and writing a 300-word essay on the "effect of road accidents and their solution".

Police on Tuesday arrested the teenager's father, Vishal Agarwal, a prominent real estate developer, for giving the car to his underage son, who did not have a driving licence.

Police sought to prosecute the 17-year-old as an adult.

“Anyone found supporting the accused shall be dealt with severe punishment," Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said. "The guilty shall be punished irrespective of his economic strata.”

The incident has led to criticism India's legal system, with many social media users ridiculing the ruling.

“The court grants bail to the accused within a few hours and asks him to write an essay on the accident,” Radhika Chaudhary said on X. "The Indian judiciary system applies differently to the rich and poor."

Another user, Ajeet Singh Patel, wrote: “The judiciary of India has increasingly become a puppet of the rich, failing to deliver justice to the poor."

Indian roads are considered to be among the deadliest in the world. The country has 1 per cent of the world’s vehicles but accounts for 11 per cent of global road accident deaths, the World Bank estimates.

Seventy per cent of the victims are between the ages of 18 and 45.

More than 461,000 road accidents were recorded in India in 2022, killing about 170,000 people and causing 443,000 injuries, the latest government data shows.

Indian authorities have tried to tackle the problem by imposing steep penalties after amending road laws in 2019, and the government also promised to revamp road infrastructure and improve vehicle safety.

Teen Who Killed 2 With Porsche Got Bail In 15 Hours. Ordered To Write Essay

The minor's lawyer said bail had been granted on some conditions -- he has to work with traffic police for 15 days, write an essay on accident, undergo treatment for his drinking habit and take counselling sessions.

Two 24-year-old engineers, including a woman, were killed in the accident in Pune

The 17-year-old boy at the wheel of the speeding Porsche that hit a bike in Pune Saturday night, killing a man and a woman, was out on bail 15 hours after he was arrested. His lawyer Prashant Patil said a court granted bail to the minor on conditions -- he has to work with traffic police in Yerwada for 15 days, write an essay on accidents, undergo treatment for his drinking habit and take counselling sessions. The accused is the son of a prominent Pune realtor.

Twenty-four-year-olds Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both engineers from Madhya Pradesh working in Pune, were returning on a bike after attending a get-together with friends. The Porsche, which eyewitnesses have said was driving at over 200 km per hour and had no number plates, hit the bike. Ashwini was thrown about 20 feet in the air and landed hard, said an eyewitness. Aneesh was thrown at a parked car and suffered serious injuries. Both died on the spot.

"The accident took place around 2.15 am. The car was in full speed. The driver was fleeing after the car hit the bike, but the airbags deployed. He could not see the road and parked the car. And locals caught them. Besides the driver, there were two occupants in the car. One of them escaped. The crowd beat up the other two," said an eyewitness, an auto-rickshaw operator waiting for a ride.

The eyewitness said police reached the spot in 15 minutes.

The minor, it is learnt, was returning with his friends from a pub where they were partying to celebrate clearing their Class 12 exams. He is four months short of turning 18, the minimum age to get a driver's licence in India.

Following a complaint by a friend of one of the victims, an FIR was registered under sections relating to death by negligence and rash driving. The teenager's father and the pub that served him alcohol are also likely to be charged, police have said.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said police had urged the court to treat the accused as an adult because this is a "heinous crime" and sought his custody. Police will approach the sessions court against the bail order, he said. "The father of the juvenile accused who handed over this car without a number plate to him to drive and allowed him to go to a pub has also been proceeded against. The establishment that served alcohol has also been proceeded against," he said.

The case is now being investigated by an Assistant Commissioner of Police-level officer and a "watertight case is being made out", he said. The police commissioner said it is clear that the boy was driving under the influence of alcohol. Several eyewitnesses have said the teenager and his friends were heavily drunk.

The incident has sparked massive outrage, with many blaming lax laws for deaths due to rash driving and minors on the wheels.

Anurag Kulshrestha, president of an NGO that works for road safety, told NDTV, "There is no fear of law. In Pune, when authorities tried to enforce the helmet rule, all political parties came out to protest. We are living in an indisciplined society."

The 17-year-old boy driving Porsche car, who the police claim was drunk at the time after consuming liquor at a bar, knocked down two motorbike riders in Pune's Kalyani Nagar.

The 17-year-old boy driving Porsche car, who the police claim was drunk at the time after consuming liquor at a bar, knocked down two motorbike riders in Pune's Kalyani Nagar.

Pune Porsche Accident Updates: Maharashtra deputy CM said juvenile justice board took 'lenient view' on police report and granted bail to the teen by asking him to write an essay of 300 words on road safety.

Pune Porsche Accident News Updates: The Juvenile Justice Board has cancelled the bail order of the 17-year-old teen who crashed his speeding Porsche into a motorbike killing two people on the spot. He has been sent to observation home until June 5.

Police argued in favour of the remand of the 17-year-old accused in front of the Juvenile Justice Board on the grounds that he is not safe outside as people will possibly attack him and people are safe if he is inside.

The defence counsel, however, said the teen suffered from depression that’s why he got into the habit of drinking. The accused before the board mentioned that he wants to stay with his mother and would feel safe at home. He said he could further slip into depression if he is kept inside the remand home.

Ahead of the hearing before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), Pune police added some more sections against the 17-year-old accused. Apart from section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act (driving by a drunken person), sections 184 (action against those who violate traffic rules through rash or dangerous driving), 119 (age limit in connection with the driving of motor vehicles) and 177 (general provision for punishment of offences) have been added.

The juvenile justice board heard the application of Pune police to try the 17-year-old accused as an adult.

A Porsche car allegedly driven by the teenager , who the police claim was drunk at the time, fatally knocked down two motorbike-borne software engineers in Kalyani Nagar in Pune city in the early hours of Sunday.

The father of the 17-year-old, Vishal Agarwal , a real estate developer, was sent to two days of police custody by a session court on Wednesday. According to the remand copy, Vishal Agarwal was not cooperating with police in the investigation therefore, Pune police sought his custody for further questioning.

When police sent him the notice to join the investigation before his arrest, he misled them by stating that he was in Shirdi but he was in Aurangabad. When Vishal was arrested he was carrying a simple Nokia phone and a Kia company-manufactured car. Both have been confiscated by the police.

The police had registered a case against the teenager’s father under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Section 75 deals with “willful neglect of a child, or exposing a child to mental or physical illnesses,” while section 77 deals with supplying a child with intoxicating liquor or drugs.

According to the FIR lodged in connection with the incident, the man, despite knowing his son did not have a valid driving license , gave him the car, thus endangering the latter’s life. He also allowed his son to party despite knowing he consumes liquor.

The deceased were identified as Anish Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta , both 24-year-old IT professionals hailing from Madhya Pradesh and working in Pune.

Latest Updates on Pune Accident:

  • Prashant Patil, lawyer of the accused, said a decision on whether to appeal the order will be taken after talking to the teen’s parents. “We will speak to the parents of the accused and decide whether we need to appeal or not by tomorrow evening,” Patil said.
  • Parents can meet the accused twice a week for an hour.
  • No arguments were made today in front of the JJ board on the teen being tried as an adult. Police will have to file a chargesheet within 30 days and it will be decided within three months if the 17-year-old will be tried as an adult, the accused’s lawyer further said, adding that police will have to seek approval from the JJB if they want to question the teen.
  • The defence counsel said the teen suffered from depression that’s why he got into the habit of drinking.
  • RTO Officer Sanjiv Bhor said, “The car was delivered from a dealer in Bengaluru. A temporary registration was issued from Bengaluru Central RTO which was valid from 18 March 2024 to 17 September 2024… The owner brought the car for registration at the RTO Pune on 18 April 2024 where it was inspected and approved on the same day. The prescribed fee was not paid and a registration number for the car was not issued. Since this is an EV, there is an exemption in the registration fee and tax… The accused is not liable for a driving licence up to the age of 25… The flying squads have been instructed to immediately detain any vehicles without number plates…”

• The hearing has begun at JJB. The media is not allowed inside. Sources said that Vishal Agarwal will be produced around 2 pm.

• A Pune court on Tuesday remanded three accused — an owner and two managers of different restaurants — where the boy consumed liquor along with his friends before getting behind the wheel of the car — to police custody till May 24 in the case. The accused — Naman Pralhad Bhutda, the son of Cosie restaurant owner, its manager Sachin Katkar , and the manager of Blak Club hotel Sandip Sangle — were produced before the court.

• Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said after the crash, the police immediately invoked IPC section 304 along with relevant provisions and in its remand plea before the JJB, mentioned that since the teenager was 17 years and eight months old, he should be treated as adult.

• “After the (2012) Nirbhaya case (of Delhi), there was an amendment in the law stipulating that in heinous crimes, juveniles (accused) who are above 16 should be tried as adults. Taking this point, the Pune police sought permission to allow them to treat the juvenile (in Pune crash case ) as an adult. However, the board took a different stand,” Fadnavis maintained. He said the JJB took a “lenient view” on remand report filed by the police and granted bail to the boy on grounds he will do community work for 15 days and write an essay of 300 words on road safety.

• “The order ( granting bail ) passed by the JJB was shocking and surprising and it aggravated the public outrage,” the deputy CM opined. The police moved an application in a higher court challenging the JJB order.

• After an FIR was registered against Pune builder Vishal Agarwal for letting his 17-year-old son drive the luxury car, he tried to escape . Agarwal tried to mislead the police by leaving home in his car and asking the driver to take the road to Mumbai.

• The prominent Pune realtor reportedly told another driver to leave for Goa in his other car. On the way to Mumbai, he got off the car and used a friend’s car to proceed towards Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

• NDTV stated that multiple cars were involved to confuse the cops on where he was headed. The realtor also started using a new SIM card so that police cannot track his number, police have said.
