Best Master's in Education
Reviews and rankings of the best master's in education programs, 5 topics for a master’s in education thesis.
Choosing to pursue a Master’s degree in education is a noble and rewarding undertaking. Your experience as an educator has cultivated your keen awareness to and understanding of issues impacting today’s students. To truly demonstrate your knowledge on these crucial issues, selecting a stellar thesis topic is of utmost importance.
Resource: Top 10 Best Online Master’s in Education Degree Programs (M.Ed.) 2016
Listed below are 5 topics that may inspire you when selecting a theme for your Master’s dissertation research:
1: Autism awareness in the classroom
Accommodating students with special needs and developing a learner-friendly classroom environment is undoubtedly one of the key elements of teaching. However, despite research conducted by the CDC suggesting that approximately 1 out of 68 children is on the autism spectrum, little progress has been made to ensure that public schools and accompanying curriculum adequately accommodate different needs. Furthermore, the stigma surrounding autism stems from a lack of understanding about the condition. Perhaps research into how to appropriately inform educators and students alike about autism would make for a more equitable, hospital learning environment. This would make a worthwhile Master’s thesis topic to undertake.
2: Nutrition and its effects on education
It is widely known that ‘you are what you eat.’ Unfortunately, many students in the United States do not have the opportunity to enjoy nutritious meals on a daily basis. It would be pertinent to gain a better understanding of nutrition’s role in students’ academic performance and overall wellbeing. Furthermore, examining meal programs provided in schools could showcase if students truly have access to foods which meet dietary and nutritional needs.
3: Utilizing technology in the classroom
Technological advances are becoming ever prevalent in our modern lives. Rather than ignore this reality, it would be beneficial for educators to embrace technology into the learning environment. For a Master’s thesis, one could examine various technological teaching tools and evaluate efficacy in the teaching environment. As children become exposed to technology at younger ages, learning to adapt to the changes in attention span and learning styles are highly critical to maintaining an engaging classroom.
4: After-school programs
Due to financial strains and governmental cutbacks in public school budgets, the future of after-school programs is becoming increasingly uncertain. The significance of providing a safe after-school environment as well as fostering a student’s interest or hobby cannot be overlooked. As an educator, you can demonstrate your understanding of after-school programs and the role they play in developing healthier, happier students (research further supported by the U.S. Federal Government ).
5: Incorporating meditation in the classroom
New age mindfulness practices are becoming all the rage these days. Many proponents attest to the magnificent calming and therapeutic benefits of a few minutes of silent meditation each day. Mindfulness training programs for teachers, such as Mindful Schools , boast that including meditation practices in the daily curriculum will ‘build attention, self-regulation, and empathy’. A research study would be highly valuable if it could accurately support or refute these claims.
These are just a few ideas to guide you on your path to obtaining your prestigious Master’s degree in Education. By selecting a thesis topic that is ideal for you, you will fully demonstrate your knowledge and proficiency as a skilled educator.

5 Tips for Choosing Your EdD Dissertation Topic
Faculty Insights Industry Advice Education
Associate teaching professor Corliss Thompson shares her top tips for choosing your EdD dissertation topic.
You’ve learned more about why you should earn your Doctor of Education (EdD), and now you’re ready to apply. As part of the Northeastern application process, however, you’re required to submit a problem of practice that you want to pursue throughout the course of your doctoral program.
But how do you arrive at that problem of practice and narrow your area of interest down into a specific dissertation topic? Here are some tips to keep in mind.
Download Our Free Guide to Earning Your EdD
Learn how an EdD can give you the skills to enact organizational change in any industry.
DOWNLOAD NOW
Tips for Choosing a Dissertation Topic
1. pick a topic you’re passionate about..
A lot of work goes into your dissertation—from the literature review, where you’re conducting a critical analysis of what’s been published on your topic, to interviewing stakeholders and actually writing the dissertation itself. Each of those steps take time, so you want to choose a topic that will keep you engaged and hold your interest.
When trying to decide your area of focus, consider the challenges you’re motivated to address and the difference you want to make both during and at the end of your EdD program. The goal is that you will continuously build off your dissertation research and leverage the work in a way that positively impacts your organization and/or community.
2. Ensure your topic is manageable.
You want to select a topic you can complete during the duration of your EdD program that is also aligned with your budget. If you need to travel or perform longitudinal research, your idea might not be achievable. Find what available, attainable data you can, and use that to narrow down your research into a dissertation that’s more manageable.
3. Embrace the unknown.
Although you’re passionate about your topic and it’s manageable, there will still be lingering questions about your subject. Be prepared to explore what you don’t know and deepen what you already do know. Strong research typically results in more questions.
Be ready to ask questions of yourself, others, and the literature, and get comfortable with not knowing the answer. As you’re thinking about your dissertation, keep track of inquiries that emerge around different ideas. Those may help you hone in on a topic.
4. Leverage your peers.
One benefit of enrolling in an EdD program is the diversity of backgrounds and opinions you’ll find within your cohort. At Northeastern, EdD instruction is primarily online, which enables students to connect and collaborate with professionals from around the world.
Vasiliki Goudanas Mavroudhis, a recent graduate of Northeastern’s EdD program, emphasized this benefit in her piece on what it’s like to be in an online doctoral program , saying:
The ability to not only have a cohort-based network, but one that crossed cohorts and continents, allowed me to have a far richer and deeper experience. I learned from students with different perspectives who came from different industries across a number of countries.
When fleshing out your dissertation, use that global network to your advantage. Ask your peers for constructive feedback. It’s likely they’ll have suggestions on how you can approach your topic from different cultural perspectives.
5. Know it’s OK to change your topic.
It’s natural for your dissertation topic to evolve the more research you complete and experts you interview. Actually, it’s expected.
Switching topics halfway through the program might seem like more work, but you will have already gone through the research process once and laid the foundation for your dissertation. As you approach your topic from different perspectives, it’s understandable if your own viewpoint changes a bit.
If you’re in need of inspiration, here are some examples of doctoral research Northeastern students have recently conducted:
- “The Drop Out Decisions of Latino College Students”
- “Changing the Experiences of African Refugee Youth”
- “Supporting Students Through Mindful Mentoring”
- “The Transitioning Student Veteran: Finding Your Civilian Career Through Academic Success”
- “Bridging the Gap Between Training and Educating in Adult Learning”
- “Watch out for Shards from the Glass Ceiling: A Study of Women Higher Educational Administrators’ Leadership Development Experiences”

The Faculty of Education's Graduate Studies is delighted to announce the results of the 2024 3MT: Faculty of Education Heat competition!
We would like to express our gratitude to Dr. Jeannie Kerr who served as the MC and to Drs. Pooja Dharamshi , Ana Maria Navas Iannini and Cristiano Moura for their challenging work in ranking the participants based on specific criteria. We also wish to thank the audience for their participation in selecting the recipient of the People's Choice award!
Congratulations to Emmeline Hoogland and Olessya Akimenko who will be representing the Faculty in the 3MT SFU Finals ! The finals will take place online and in-person at the Big Data Hub (ASB 10900) on April 4 from 12:30 PM - 2:00 PM.
First Place Winner: Emmeline Hoogland Program: PhD, Educational Technology and Learning Design Supervisor: Dr. Engida Gebre
Topic: Family portraits from bud to bloom: (Hidden) dimensions of teenagers’ flowering relationship with Nature
"Coming from a Science Education and Communication background, it is useful to consider presenting something as complex as your research engagingly and understandably! It makes you think about what elements of your research are relevant and interesting to a broader audience. I wasn’t sure I could participate at first, as I haven’t started collecting data yet, but I am very happy I could."
"One of my favourite moments of the Heat was when we had some time to talk when the jury was deliberating – as everyone there now knows a bit about your research. It was an honour to be both the winner and the people’s choice, as it felt like I could connect with the audience and the judges. For anyone thinking about participating in the future – just go for it and don’t overthink it! Even if you don’t want to participate, try and see if you can explain your research in 3 minutes or less – it makes talking to family and friends easier!"
Runner-Up: Olessya Akimenko Program: PhD, Languages, Cultures & Literacies Supervisor: Dr. Ena Lee
Topic: Discourses of EAL Teacher Identity: Stakeholder Perceptions in Canada
"I wasn't sure how I could condense my substantial doctoral study into just 3 minutes, but I'm thrilled to have succeeded in this challenging task. Being chosen as the runner-up is a great honour, considering the excellent presentations by others."
"My advice for future participants is to present as if speaking to a general audience. Make your talk interesting and understandable by simplifying it or adding humour and pop culture references. The 3MT competition not only helps you make your study accessible to all but also reignites your passion by offering a fresh perspective."
We would also like to congratulate and acknowledge the rest of the competitors for their impressive presentations as well.
Competitor: Aylar Nash Program: PhD, Educational Psychology Supervisors: Dr. Lucy LeMare and Dr. Elina Birmingham
Topic: User Experience Research in Canvas
Competitor: Massoumeh (Massi) Khaleghi Saraghein Program: PhD, Langues, cultures et littératies (En Francais) Supervisors: Dr. Danièle Moore and Dr. Geneviève Brisson
Topic: Teachers’ representation of their practices while using technology in classrooms: A multicase study in French as a second language classes in B.C., Canada
Determined to Make the World a Better Place
Questrom MBA student Jyotirmaya Patro hopes to use his education to deliver health care to those who need it most
MBA student Jyotirmaya Patro (Questrom’25) also works as a social media assistant, a diversity educator, and a graduate admissions ambassador for Questrom.
Alene Bouranova
Jackie ricciardi.
For some people, gratitude can be a powerful motivator for transforming the world around them.
Jyotirmaya Patro is one such individual.
Patro (Questrom’25) wears many hats: he’s an entrepreneur, a global diversity, equity, and inclusion advocate, a minor LinkedIn influencer , a public speaker, a yogi, a photographer, and a husband and father. As of late, he’s also a Questrom School of Business graduate student—working on dual master’s, in healthcare business administration and in digital technology—who came to Boston University at the age of 40 after taking a leave of absence from a successful career in start-ups and technology in his native India.
His is a story of humble beginnings, fierce determination, and a deep commitment to leaving the world better than he found it.
His secret? Never forgetting his roots.
From “the whole village was my family” to bullying and humiliation
Patro’s journey began in Gurandi, a small rural village in the state of Odisha, India. His family was impoverished—he owned only a few items of clothing and he often had to forage for food from plants growing on the surrounding mountains—but the community around him was tight.
Growing up, “the whole village was my family,” Patro recalls.
An excellent student, he left Gurandi to pursue higher education in a nearby city, studying information technology at a vocational college. But he struggled to adjust to city life. His classmates bullied him for being poor and unsophisticated. Back home, everyone was considered family and was treated as such. The privileged students he met in college, however, were jaded and judgmental, quick to mock his earnestness.
“Until that time, I had never had an education that differentiated between professional and unprofessional behavior,” Patro says. “What worked at a rural school didn’t work at a big college. I experienced humiliation all the time and started suppressing myself.”
He gradually adapted to the city, but things remained difficult after graduation. He spent two fruitless years trying to find employment. At his lowest point, he considered ending his life rather than admit failure to his family.
But his parents never stopped believing in him. “God has something better for you,” his mother assured him.
Finding his calling
Throughout his struggles, Patro says, “there was a fire in me all the time.” He returned to school, attending the Biju Patnaik University of Technology in Odisha, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in information technology. He graduated in 2009—in the midst of the global financial crisis—and took jobs as a custodian and a call center worker while he worked to break into the tech space.
His luck turned around in 2011, when he started a job as a business intelligence engineer for a B2B (business-to-business) digital services and consulting company. His first client? Apple. He was laid off two years later, but quickly found a new job as a lead data analyst for Capgemini, another digital B2B firm, this time working on the Morgan Stanley team.
That’s when he found his calling.
As he began climbing the corporate ladder in India, Patro found that he had a deep desire to give back to the communities around him. And specifically, to marginalized communities. “Since I come from an underprivileged background,” he says, “I wanted to focus on the communities who nobody was focusing on.”
He began actively volunteering, leading education workshops for the girl children of sex workers through the ENLIGHT project , a Capgemini partner program that helps disadvantaged girls rise above their circumstances. Then he became involved with We Are Your Voice, a nongovernmental organization that connects employers with job candidates with disabilities, where he helped organize job fairs , collaborated with government offices to establish a job training and placement forum, and created a digital help desk to assist people with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic, among other projects.
“I’ve contributed a big part of my life to people with disabilities,” Patro says. “In the last several years of my journey I’m proud to say that I have helped more than 10,000 disabled people find jobs.” Not to mention his help desk, which provided more than 50,000 disabled people with daily essentials like food and medication during the pandemic.
He has also volunteered in support of initiatives to empower India’s LGBTQ+ community and women in technology. And he used his tech background to help others, supervising and mentoring at dozens of hackathons aimed at finding technological solutions for the world’s pressing issues, working with the likes of Harvard, MIT, and even the United Nations.
As for the corporate world, Patro continued to move up in the tech space even as he devoted more time to volunteering. He entered the start-up sphere in 2019: his second venture, AI-powered safety sensors designed to help elderly parents age in place, generated significant buzz before petering out during lockdown, he says. Around the same time, he left Capgemini to join German biopharma giant Merck as a product portfolio manager.
Questrom and beyond
Then he walked away from it all.
“Throughout my life, I’ve never been materialistic or money-minded,” Patro says. “I always work so hard for all of my experiences and to give back to the society that has helped me become who I am today.”
Working for Merck cemented his interest in healthcare and health tech. He decided that if he wanted to become a global leader in the field, thereby helping even more people, he’d need to go back to school.
Questrom’s MBA in health sector management is one of the top-rated healthcare MBA programs in the country. In 2023, Patro left his home and family in India to pursue dual master’s, in healthcare administration and in technology. His goal: to learn everything necessary to become an empathetic healthcare leader and bridge the gap between underserved communities and essential healthcare services.
Throughout his corporate experiences, he says, “I’ve learned that empathy is the most important skill in a businessperson. You don’t only need the technological expertise or the business expertise.” At BU, “this is not a journey of my education, but my journey of a lifelong dream.” With two BU MBAs under his belt, his goal is to “improve access to healthcare for vulnerable populations, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.”
[Being at BU] is not a journey of my education, but my journey of a lifelong dream. Jyotirmaya Patro
Outside of his coursework, Patro—JP to his colleagues and classmates—works as a social media assistant in Questrom’s marketing and communications department, a diversity educator in the school’s Center for DEI , and an MBA ambassador for the graduate admissions team. He also photographs the odd event or two when asked.
“Having JP on the Questrom MarCom team is a gift,” says his supervisor, Katie Gauthier , a Questrom digital communications specialist. “His perspective on diversity, equity, and inclusion and his background have helped us raise the bar on our content to be more representative of the diverse Questrom community. His curiosity, adaptability, and the fact that he takes his camera almost everywhere has strengthened our connection with a wide range of folks from different programs across BU.”
How does he do it all? It’s a fair question, and the one Patro says he gets asked the most.
First, he runs to stay fit. He also relies heavily on yoga and meditation—the “best medicine,” he says—to de-stress and keep himself grounded. His biggest motivator, however, is the “fire” that’s kept him going since his youth.
Coming from his village, “nobody could even think of going to a different country to pursue an education—even a regular education,” he says. “People cannot even dream about that.” To have had the opportunities he’s had is a blessing he says he’ll spend the rest of his life trying to pay back.
His parents, the longtime champions of his dreams, passed away some years ago. “My parents worked so hard and suffered much before dying early in life,” Patro says. Knowing how proud they would be of him today “gives me a chance to cherish my journey. That motivates me in my life’s work: that the problems which I have faced in my life, no one else will face.”

Amid state DEI ban, the University of Texas lays off dozens of employees
The layoffs come after a republican state legislator warned college administrators in texas to comply with the controversial law..
A university in Texas has begun massive staff layoffs months after a statewide ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in public colleges took effect.
State Sen. Brandon Creighton, a Republican, warned Texas university system administrators last week about the state's expectations for higher education institutions to comply with Senate Bill 17, an anti-DEI law that went into effect in January. Now, the University of Texas at Austin has laid off at least 60 staff members who previously worked in DEI-related positions, according to two people with knowledge of the terminations who confirmed them to the Austin American-Statesman, part of the USA TODAY Network.
The decision is yet another escalation in the mounting attacks on programs that benefit marginalized groups in higher education. In red states like Texas and Florida, anti-DEI laws have shuttered safe spaces for LGBTQ students in the past year and triggered fears that professors and students would flee to more liberal states.
The University of Texas has not confirmed to the Statesman the number of staff positions that have been eliminated or how many employees will be laid off. But on Tuesday afternoon, one of the people with knowledge of the terminations said at least 60 people lost their jobs, 40 of them in the Division of Campus and Community Engagement alone. The layoffs become effective in 90 days or more, people familiar with the terminations told the Statesman. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the terminations publicly. UT did not respond to a Statesman request for comment.

UT Austin is also closing the Division of Campus and Community Engagement, previously known as the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. President Jay Hartzell said in an email to the UT community on Tuesday afternoon, which was obtained by the Statesman, that although the school made changes before Jan. 1 to comply with SB 17, "we knew that more work would be required to utilize our talent and resources most effectively in support of our teaching and research missions, and ultimately, our students."

"The new law has changed the scope of some programs on campus, making them broader and creating duplication with long-standing existing programs supporting students, faculty, and staff," Hartzell said. "Following those reviews, we have concluded that additional measures are necessary to reduce overlaps, streamline student-facing portfolios, and optimize and redirect resources into our fundamental activities of teaching and research."
Hartzell said the remaining programs will be redistributed among other divisions. He said funding that previously supported DEI initiatives will now be redirected to "support teaching and research." Student support, however, will be available for the rest of the semester.
"The positions that provided support for those associate and assistant deans and a small number of staff roles across campus that were formerly focused on DEI will no longer be funded," Hartzell said.

Hartzell added in his email that the Division of Student Affairs will work to ensure student-facing support lasts through the rest of the semester as do student workers' positions, and that "staff members whose positions are being eliminated will have the opportunity to apply and be considered for existing open positions at the University, and resources will be made available to support them."
The university did not clarify how many or which programs and positions have been eliminated. University officials at seven other University of Texas campuses did not respond to requests for comment Wednesday about whether they had taken or planned to take similar action.
DEI on campus: Attacks continue nationwide
In recent years, conservatives have centered their disdain for diversity, equity and inclusion programs in their approach to higher education policy.
According to the Chronicle of Higher Education , more than 80 DEI-related bills have been introduced since 2023 in state legislatures nationwide, largely aimed at dismantling such programs. About two dozen of those bills have either become law or were given a final legislative stamp of approval.
Nowhere have DEI programs been more jeopardized than Florida and Texas . Republican governors in both states signed strict laws preventing taxpayer dollars from going toward certain positions or training tailored to help marginalized groups succeed on campus.
Why are changes influenced by SB 17 still being made?
In Texas, SB 17 bans DEI offices, initiatives and employees from fulfilling those functions at Texas public universities and colleges. In Creighton’s March 26 letter to university system chancellors and boards of regents, he expressed disappointment that some colleges might just be changing office names and titles as part of their compliance, and he cautioned that “this letter should serve as notice that this practice is unacceptable.” He warned administrators that lawmakers could take legal action and even freeze state funding for their institutions if they do not fully comply with SB 17.
"Recognized as the most robust DEI prohibition in the nation, this bill mandates a fundamental shift in the operation of our higher education institutions," Creighton said in his letter.

A UT department chair who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the terminations publicly told the Statesman that they were contacted by their dean Tuesday morning to notify them that an employee in the department would be terminated. That employee, according to the chair, had previously worked in a DEI-related role but was reassigned to a new position and duties as part of the school's compliance with SB 17.
A sophomore who also works in the dean's office told The Daily Texan, the campus newspaper, on Tuesday she learned secondhand that her job had been axed.
“We had an event today, so I texted my boss and I said ‘Hello, where in the Union are we meeting?’” Taizon Walker told the Daily Texan. “She said, ‘Our job has been dissolved today.’”
In previous communications about the anti-DEI law, Hartzell assured the community that the school would continue to support all students while complying with the law. From December until this week, Hartzell did not address the university community about the school's continued efforts to comply with SB 17. On Tuesday when he announced the Division of Campus and Community Engagement was shutting down.
'Y'all are taking away lifesaving services'
UT Austin senior Bibi Macias, a first-generation college student involved in student agencies previously housed in the now-shuttered Multicultural Engagement Center, said the news of staff members losing their jobs and as well as the Division of Campus and Community Engagement (formerly Diversity and Community Engagement Division) closing is "disgusting."
"Heartbreaking and devastating don't begin to cover my feelings about it," Macias said. "Y'all are taking away lifesaving services."
As a first-generation student, Macias said, the Community Engagement Division has been an important resource for her. She said its support had a drastic impact on students' experience and comfort on campus. But she also worries about the staff members, who have dedicated so much to supporting students.
"They're messing with people's lives," Macias said.
Students and professors have accused the university of overcomplying with the law – UT has shut down programs like Monarch , which helped undocumented students navigate school applications, internships and financial aid; and shuttered the Multicultural Engagement Center, which served as a “home away from home” for students of multiple multicultural identities and was open to everyone. They've argued that SB 17 and the university's compliance with it is creating a chilling effect on recruitment and retention – Macias fears it will affect graduation rates for marginalized student groups.
Some conservative lawmakers, who have celebrated ending DEI programs at universities and colleges, have said the Legislature's work to end "woke" policies, or identity politics, at institutions of higher learning is not finished.
UT, like all public universities, went through drastic changes in the weeks and months leading up to SB 17's Jan. 1 effective date. In December, UT announced it was replacing its Gender and Sexuality Center with the Women’s Community Center, shifting the center's focus from LGBTQ+ issues to gender-related matters.
“With its depth, breadth and extraordinary expertise, the Division of Campus and Community Engagement will continue to distinguish UT Austin as uniquely capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly changing campus, state and world,” LaToya Smith, vice president of campus and community engagement, said in an email to the school community in December about the division's changes. “We are here for all.”
Macias, who is involved in the QTBIPOCA and Latinx Community Affairs student agencies that lost UT sponsorship before Jan. 1, said SB 17 creates more pressure for students to create and maintain safe spaces for historically underrepresented and marginalized peoples. Macias's younger sister, a UT freshman, won't have the resources she did, she said.
"How do we survive as these institutions within UT?" Macias asked.
