Personal Goal Setting

Planning to live your life your way.

By the Mind Tools Content Team

Many people feel as if they're adrift in the world. They work hard, but they don't seem to get anywhere worthwhile.

A key reason that they feel this way is that they haven't spent enough time thinking about what they want from life, and haven't set themselves formal goals. After all, would you set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Probably not!

How to Set Personal Goals

First consider what you want to achieve, and then commit to it. Set SMART (specific, measureable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) goals that motivate you and write them down to make them feel tangible. Then plan the steps you must take to realize your goal, and cross off each one as you work through them.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal future, and for motivating yourself to turn your vision of this future into reality.

The process of setting goals helps you choose where you want to go in life. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that can, so easily, lead you astray.

Why Set Goals?

Top-level athletes, successful businesspeople and achievers in all fields all set goals. Setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation . It focuses your acquisition of knowledge, and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the most of your life.

By setting sharp, clearly defined goals, you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals, and you'll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind. You will also raise your self-confidence , as you recognize your own ability and competence in achieving the goals that you've set.

Starting to Set Personal Goals

You set your goals on a number of levels:

  • First you create your "big picture" of what you want to do with your life (or over, say, the next 10 years), and identify the large-scale goals that you want to achieve.
  • Then, you break these down into the smaller and smaller targets that you must hit to reach your lifetime goals.
  • Finally, once you have your plan, you start working on it to achieve these goals.

This is why we start the process of setting goals by looking at your lifetime goals. Then, we work down to the things that you can do in, say, the next five years, then next year, next month, next week, and today, to start moving towards them.

Step 1: Setting Lifetime Goals

The first step in setting personal goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your lifetime (or at least, by a significant and distant age in the future). Setting lifetime goals gives you the overall perspective that shapes all other aspects of your decision making.

To give a broad, balanced coverage of all important areas in your life, try to set goals in some of the following categories (or in other categories of your own, where these are important to you):

  • Career – What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve?
  • Financial – How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career goals?
  • Education – Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals?
  • Family – Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?
  • Artistic – Do you want to achieve any artistic goals?
  • Attitude – Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behavior or find a solution to the problem.)
  • Physical – Are there any athletic goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
  • Pleasure – How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your life is for you!)
  • Public Service – Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how?

Spend some time brainstorming these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do. Then consider trimming again so that you have a small number of really significant goals that you can focus on.

As you do this, make sure that the goals that you have set are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, not ones that your parents, family, or employers might want. (If you have a partner, you probably want to consider what he or she wants – however, make sure that you also remain true to yourself!)

You may also want to read our article on Personal Mission Statements . Crafting a personal mission statement can help bring your most important goals into sharp focus.

Step 2: Setting Smaller Goals

Once you have set your lifetime goals, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan.

Then create a one-year plan, six-month plan, and a one-month plan of progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your lifetime goals. Each of these should be based on the previous plan.

Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today to work towards your lifetime goals.

At an early stage, your smaller goals might be to read books and gather information on the achievement of your higher level goals. This will help you to improve the quality and realism of your goal setting.

Finally, review your plans, and make sure that they fit the way in which you want to live your life.

If you feel that you're not paying enough attention to certain areas of your life, you'll find our articles on The Wheel of Life and the Life/Career Rainbow useful.

Staying on Course

Once you've decided on your first set of goals, keep the process going by reviewing and updating your To-Do List on a daily basis.

Periodically review the longer term plans, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience. (A good way of doing this is to schedule regular, repeating reviews using a computer-based diary.)

SMART Goals

A useful way of making goals more powerful is to use the SMART mnemonic. While there are plenty of variants (some of which we've included in parenthesis), SMART usually stands for:

  • S – Specific (or Significant).
  • M – Measurable (or Meaningful).
  • A – Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
  • R – Relevant (or Rewarding).
  • T – Time-bound (or Trackable).

For example, instead of having "to sail around the world" as a goal, it's more powerful to use the SMART goal "To have completed my trip around the world by December 31, 2027." Obviously, this will only be attainable if a lot of preparation has been completed beforehand!

Tips to Set Personal Goals

The following broad guidelines will help you to set effective, achievable goals:

  • State each goal as a positive statement – Express your goals positively – "Execute this technique well" is a much better goal than "Don't make this stupid mistake."
  • Be precise – Set precise goals, putting in dates, times and amounts so that you can measure achievement. If you do this, you'll know exactly when you have achieved the goal, and can take complete satisfaction from having achieved it.
  • Set priorities – When you have several goals, give each a priority. This helps you to avoid feeling overwhelmed by having too many goals, and helps to direct your attention to the most important ones.
  • Write goals down – This crystallizes them and gives them more force.
  • Keep operational goals small – Keep the low-level goals that you're working towards small and achievable. If a goal is too large, then it can seem that you are not making progress towards it. Keeping goals small and incremental gives more opportunities for reward.
  • Set performance goals, not outcome goals – You should take care to set goals over which you have as much control as possible. It can be quite dispiriting to fail to achieve a personal goal for reasons beyond your control! In business, these reasons could be bad business environments or unexpected effects of government policy. In sport, they could include poor judging, bad weather, injury, or just plain bad luck. If you base your goals on personal performance, then you can keep control over the achievement of your goals, and draw satisfaction from them.
  • Set realistic goals – It's important to set goals that you can achieve. All sorts of people (for example, employers, parents, media, or society) can set unrealistic goals for you. They will often do this in ignorance of your own desires and ambitions. It's also possible to set goals that are too difficult because you might not appreciate either the obstacles in the way, or understand quite how much skill you need to develop to achieve a particular level of performance.

Achieving Goals

When you've achieved a goal, take the time to enjoy the satisfaction of having done so. Absorb the implications of the goal achievement, and observe the progress that you've made towards other goals.

If the goal was a significant one, reward yourself appropriately. All of this helps you build the self-confidence you deserve.

With the experience of having achieved this goal, review the rest of your goal plans:

  • If you achieved the goal too easily, make your next goal harder.
  • If the goal took a dispiriting length of time to achieve, make the next goal a little easier.
  • If you learned something that would lead you to change other goals, do so.
  • If you noticed a deficit in your skills despite achieving the goal, decide whether to set goals to fix this.

Our article, Golden Rules of Goal Setting , will show you how to set yourself up for success when it comes to your goals. If you're still having trouble, you might also want to try Backward Goal Setting .

It's important to remember that failing to meet goals does not matter much, just as long as you learn from the experience.

Feed lessons you have learned back into the process of setting your next goals. Remember too that your goals will change as time goes on. Adjust them regularly to reflect growth in your knowledge and experience, and if goals do not hold any attraction any longer, consider letting them go.

Example Personal Goals

For her New Year's Resolution, Susan has decided to think about what she really wants to do with her life.

Her lifetime goals are as follows:

  • Career – "To be managing editor of the magazine that I work for."
  • Artistic – "To keep working on my illustration skills. Ultimately I want to have my own show in our downtown gallery."
  • Physical – "To run a marathon."

Now that Susan has listed her lifetime goals, she then breaks down each one into smaller, more manageable goals.

Let's take a closer look at how she might break down her lifetime career goal – becoming managing editor of her magazine:

  • Five-year goal: "Become deputy editor."
  • One-year goal: "Volunteer for projects that the current Managing Editor is heading up."
  • Six-month goal: "Go back to school and finish my journalism degree."
  • One-month goal: "Talk to the current managing editor to determine what skills are needed to do the job."
  • One-week goal: "Book the meeting with the Managing Editor."

As you can see from this example, breaking big goals down into smaller, more manageable goals makes it far easier to see how the goal will get accomplished.

Goal setting is an important method for:

  • Deciding what you want to achieve in your life.
  • Separating what's important from what's irrelevant, or a distraction.
  • Motivating yourself.
  • Building your self-confidence, based on successful achievement of goals.

Set your lifetime goals first. Then, set a five-year plan of smaller goals that you need to complete if you are to reach your lifetime plan. Keep the process going by regularly reviewing and updating your goals. And remember to take time to enjoy the satisfaction of achieving your goals when you do so.

If you don't already set goals, do so, starting now. As you make this technique part of your life, you'll find your career accelerating, and you'll wonder how you did without it!

FAST EFFECTIVE WAY TO GET CURED FROM HERPES VIRUS I am writing this testimonial with immense gratitude and a renewed sense of hope in my heart. For years, I battled with the physical and emotional torment caused by the herpes virus. It felt like an unending struggle, until I discovered a remarkable solution that changed my life forever. Like many others, I had tried countless remedies, medications and therapies in search of a cure. I had lost hope, resigned to the belief that herpes was something I would have to live with indefinitely. However, fate intervened and led me to a breakthrough that altered the course of my life. Upon stumbling upon a revolutionary treatment option, my skepticism slowly transformed into a flicker of hope. The treatment was a natural remedy from Dr Awase [ HERBS ] Over time, as I followed the treatment diligently, I started noticing positive changes and I experienced a boost in my overall well-being. I am ecstatic to share that I am now herpes-free confirmed by my Dr after a test was done. The treatment I received was nothing short of miraculous and I couldn't be more grateful. I have regained my self-confidence and the burden that once weighed heavily upon me has been lifted. I was cured of my herpes virus through natural medication. If you, like me, have been struggling with herpes and searching for a way out, please know that hope exists. May my story inspire hope in the hearts of those who need it. He also specializes in getting rid of HPV, OVARIAN CYST, ALZHEIMER, PCOS, HEPATITIS and a lot more. Contact on WhatsApp +2349074997110 Email:- dr.awaseherbalhome@gmail. com

I was extremely short of breath and constantly tired due to my Emphysema. I was advised to take Montair plus one tablet every night which would give me temporary relief and help my sleep. But I didn’t want to depend on tablet fully which only offers relief not cure. I slowly started Ayurveda, and was introduced to Natural Herbs Centre and their COPD Ayurveda Programme, my symptoms gradually diminished including my shortness of breath, wheezing and fatigue. Reach them at naturalherbscentre. com. I know I'll get negative comments but I’m sharing this perhaps someone is also looking at genuine alternative treatment. I can vouch for this Ayurvedic treatments but you still need to decide what works best for you. Sending prayers

All these years have been a regrettable year for me because my husband left me for another woman after we have gotten married for 9 years he left me with my two children and I have been calling him begging him to come back to me he refused I have done all I can but nothing works out for me I was like killing myself to see if my man will come back and take care of his children’s and I also think about if I have done this to myself will my husband come back and take care of his children’s I was still praying to God should touch his heart so he can come back nothing work out at all. I then try to forgot about my husband but I still Can’t do that so I decided to look for a help on internet and I saw a comment about how a lady testified what Dr Ughulu did for her, on how he brought her husband back to her and, I was very interested in the comment and I send a message to Dr Ughulu to help me get my husband, and after I sent him a message in less than 3 minutes he replied you’re welcome my daughter. He asked me what brought me to the temple of solution. I really explained everything to him, and he said I shouldn’t worry that everything would be fine with me. I was very happy after he said that. So he did everything he could do and also told me what to do, I really did everything hopefully, It didn’t take 24 hours. My ex-husband sent me a message and started begging me for forgiveness and I really forgive my husband. Now he’s with me. We are living peacefully together. Thank you so much Dr Ughulu. How to Set and Achieve Life Goals The Right Way

Fulfilling life goals

So, can we take this premise and apply it to the biggest, most meaningful objectives we could possibly set for ourselves—our life goals?

And what would that really mean, in terms of planning and getting on with it?

Locke’s seminal research has given us a good deal to go on when it comes to effective goal-setting. But understanding goal-setting theory is only one step toward crafting personal life goals. In this article, we’ll take a closer peek at some ideas and resources that will help you set out on the right path, and stick at it for success.

Whether you’ve got no clue what you want, or you have a mile-long bucket list, hopefully, there will be something in here to get you motivated.

Before you continue, we thought you might like to download our three Goal Achievement Exercises for free . These detailed, science-based exercises will help you or your clients create actionable goals and master techniques to create lasting behavior change.

This Article Contains:

What are life goals, why should we set goals in life, 5 examples of setting life goals, life goal ideas: a list of goals to achieve in life, the process and steps of setting life goals, how to find and determine personal goals in life, healthy goal setting objectives and guidelines, planning life goals and how to prioritize them (incl. planner), 5 worksheets for creating and setting life goals (incl. pdf), how to track and evaluate the status of your life goals: the role of accountability, 11 strategies and techniques for achieving success, a look at life without goals, 3 life goal apps, 6 books on the topic, 17 inspiring quotes, a take-home message.

Life goals are what we want to achieve, and they’re much more meaningful than just ‘ what we need to accomplish to survive ’. Unlike daily routines or short-term objectives, they drive our behaviors over the long run. There’s no single psychological definition for them, and they aren’t strictly a clinical construct, but they help us determine what we want to experience in terms of our values .

And because they are personal ambitions, they can take many different forms. But they give us a sense of direction and make us accountable as we strive for happiness and wellbeing—for our best possible lives.

Lots of us have dreams. We know what makes us happy, what we’d love to try out, and we may have a vague idea of how we’d go about it. But setting clear goals can be beneficial in several ways, above and beyond wishful thinking: here are a few.

1. Setting Goals Can Clarify Our Behaviors

First and foremost, Locke’s Theory of Goal-Setting puts intentions squarely at the center of our behavior (Locke, 1968). The act of setting goals and the thought we put into crafting them directs our attention to the why, how, and what of our aspirations. As such, they give us something to focus on and impact positively on our motivation.

Of course, there are limitations to the generalizability of this finding—simply setting goals won’t drive the actions that lead us to success.

We’ll look at this shortly, but for now, suffice to say that they give us something to commit to. It may not be easy to switch careers, but acknowledge that it’s your goal and you’ll at least be able to choose some appropriate actions (Ajzen, 1991).

2. Goals Allow for Feedback

If and when we know where we want to be, we can assess where we are now, and essentially, we can chart our progress. This feedback helps us adjust our behavior accordingly (and when it’s rewarding feedback, our brains release dopamine, e.g. Treadway et al., 2012). By allowing for feedback, goals let us align or re-align our behaviors, keeping us on track with our eyes on the prize.

3. Goal-setting Can Promote Happiness

When our goals are based on our values, they are meaningful. Meaning, purpose, and striving for something ‘bigger’ is a key element of happiness theory in positive psychology, and the ‘M’ in Seligman’s PERMA model (Seligman, 2004).

Along with positive emotion, relationships, engagement, and accomplishment (which goals allow for), it makes up what we’ve come to known as ‘The Good Life’.

In other words, life goals represent something besides the daily grind. They allow us to pursue authentic aims of our own choosing and enjoy a feeling of achievement when we get there. That said, even striving to be the very best we can sometimes lead to happiness in itself, according to eudaimonic wellbeing research (Ryan & Huta, 2009; Huta, 2016).

4. They Encourage Us to Use Our Strengths

When we consider what matters the most to us, we can get more attuned with our inner strengths as well as our passions. Charting a course for ourselves is one thing, but using our strengths to get there comes with a whole set of other benefits.

Studies show that knowing and leveraging our strengths can increase our confidence (Crabtree 2002), boost our engagement (Sorensen, 2014), and even promote feelings of good health and life satisfaction (Proyer et al., 2013).

Using them in pursuit of our goals, therefore—even discovering what they are—can be a good thing for our wellbeing.

essay about personal goal setting

As you may have seen elsewhere in our goal-setting articles, positive psychologists tend to draw on (at least) four main findings from his original work and the literature that followed (Locke & Latham, 2002; 2006).

We can then take a ‘nice idea’ and create some examples of setting goals from it. Let’s assume, therefore, that Jamie wants to set goals based on her passion – teaching.

  • The more difficult Jamie’s goal, the greater the accomplishment. Challenge, in other words, is important. Jamie could approach her goal-setting with an easy task like “ Helping my brother with his homework “, but she will derive a greater sense of achievement if she sets the bar a bit higher. An example here would be, “ Become a certified teacher ”. At the other extreme, she might try to avoid overly excessive and potentially unattainable goals, like “ Starting my own boarding school by the end of the year .”
  • The more explicit Jamie’s goal, the better she will be able to regulate her performance. Here, she could specify exactly what she wants to achieve in greater detail: “ Become a certified K1 teacher for asylum seekers in Svenborgia ”. With more precise details, Jamie can get more explicit feedback on her progress and align her performance accordingly—helping her on the path to achievement.
  • High goal commitment comes from setting important, attainable goals. At this point, Jamie has addressed challenge and clarity (or difficulty and specificity) (vanSonnenberg, 2011). She will need to reflect on whether it really matters to her and whether it’s realistic. This is more of a principle and less of a ‘step’. Does she understand what it involves and does it align with her values?
  • Jamie needs to ensure she can get feedback to stay motivated. In other words, she needs to be able to look at where she is along the way and compare that to her goal. Has she enrolled in the relevant academic pathway? Has she signed up for professional experience? Or has she achieved those and now she’s getting her Svenborgia work visa? Even better, she could see if someone might mentor her, allowing her more regular feedback on her progress.
  • Jamie’s goal should not be overly complex. As life goes on, our goals may change. Jamie might realize at teacher’s college that she wants to redefine the goal. Maybe she now wants to teach in another country and decides to learn another language. Although there’s no harm in reassessing her goals, the main takeaway is that she should not increase the difficulty of her task(s) beyond what is achievable or realistic—or she may become overwhelmed.

Inherently, life goals need to be meaningful, and meaning is subjective. In that respect, it’s probably more useful to think about categories or types of life goals before reeling off potential bucket list objectives.

According to Kasser and Ryan (2001), therefore, there are two types of life goals, and these relate to our wellbeing in different ways:

  • Intrinsic goals relate to emotional intimacy, personal growth, and helping others. They are believed to be aligned with our needs as humans, reflecting our inherent desire for self-knowledge and more fulfilling relationships (Maslow, 1943).
  • Extrinsic goals  are more culturally defined and less about our nature as human beings, encompassing things like our physical appearance, social standing, status symbols, and wealth.

Research suggests that intrinsic life goals are related to greater happiness, self-actualization, vitality, and satisfaction with life, compared with extrinsic life goals (Ryan et al., 1999; Niemiec et al., 2009).

But at the end of the day, evidence also shows that the content of our goals may be less important to our wellbeing than our reasons for pursuing them. Having the ‘right’ reason for goal pursuit—irrespective of the aspiration itself, that is—has been found to contribute to our wellbeing, and the opposite applies (Carver & Baird, 1998).

Intrinsic Life Goals

These satisfy the needs that stem from being human—including our psychological and self-fulfillment needs, as shown below in Maslow’s Hierarchy (1943).

Maslow Hierarchy of Needs

Life goals based on the former might include:

  • Having a loving marriage or a trusting relationship with your significant other;
  • Finding and keeping a healthy work-life balance, with time for friends and family;
  • Living with integrity, being honest and open with others;
  • Inspiring others through your beliefs and actions;
  • Being a great listener so that others can turn to you; or
  • Becoming an expert in your field and helping others.

Self-fulfillment needs-based goals could entail:

  • Coming up with a new invention that reflects your creative abilities;
  • Being a successful entrepreneur and running your own business;
  • Creating your own personal brand for your work;
  • Graduating with a Master’s or Ph.D. in something;
  • Learning a new language; or
  • Picking up a ‘hard skill’ and mastering it.

Extrinsic Life Goals

Extrinsic goals aren’t necessarily material, but because they are generally ‘wants’ rather than human needs, they are easier to come up with. They require less self-reflection, for example:

  • Owning the very latest Tesla;
  • Becoming a millionaire;
  • Getting a big promotion or being in a senior position at work;
  • Starring in a movie;
  • Having your own workshop/studio or
  • Visiting every country in Europe.

At the end of this article, I’ve also included some recommended books on setting life goals. Miller and Frisch’s Creating Your Best Life , for one, has many more examples that you’ll hopefully find useful.

You can (and easily will) find countless models for goal setting in the self-help literature. But what does positive psychology say about the process and steps of goal-setting? The following framework is taken from the well-known psychological capital intervention (PCI), and it uses three steps: goal design, pathway generation, and overcoming obstacles (Luthans et al., 2006).

1. Goal Design

The first step is to design our goals. When crafting goals, we need to remember the key premise of goal-setting theory—that they are intentions which guide our behavior. They are “targets for mental action sequences” (Synder, 2002: 250).

Ideally, by design:

  • Goals should be concrete endpoints. That is, we should be able to measure our success because they are clear and detailed;
  • They should be approach-based. This means we should easily be able to focus on moving positively towards their accomplishment, rather than on away from negative outcomes. (“Working toward” rather than “avoiding” something) (Coats et al., 1996); and
  • We should be able to break them down into sub-goals if necessary so that we can celebrate little successes along the way (Snyder et al., 1991).

2. Pathway Generation

We now have personally meaningful life goals designed and we can start thinking about different potential pathways for achieving them. Luthans and colleagues’ PsyCap Intervention invited participants to brainstorm multiple pathways without worrying at first about their feasibility. ‘As many possibilities as they could think of’, essentially, and not unlike ‘there are no bad ideas in brainstorming’.

Participants then invited others to weigh in and add to their potential pathways. In the same way, you might ask friends, family, or someone in a mentor-like position to help you come up with ideas on how to pursue your goals. What possible pathways might Jamie take to become a certified K1 teacher for asylum seekers in Svenborgia, for example?

The last part of pathway generation considers inventory pathways: what resources will you need to pursue pathway A, B, or C? Essentially, we refine our potential pathways—we think carefully about what we can realistically expect, and this leaves us with fewer, more viable options (Luthans et al., 2006).

3. Overcoming Obstacles

We have inherent beliefs about our ability to use pathways for goal success—our agency—and these are accordingly termed ‘agency thought’ (Snyder, 2002). This kind of thinking plays a particularly important role when we come up against obstacles, especially unexpected ones, as they can determine whether we pick ourselves up or just disengage.

When setting life goals, therefore, it helps to consider the possible barriers that might arise. Independently, we can self-reflect, thinking about our potential pathways as well as our strategies we might use to deal with them (Luthans et al., 2006). We might do this alone or with others, like in the pathway generation stage, and our focus here is to ready ourselves for contingencies.

Put differently, “ What might prevent me from achieving my goal? ” and “ How could I work through or around this? ”

essay about personal goal setting

We’ve put it further into context using Maslow ’s Needs Hierarchy, and we’ve laid out a 3-step positive psychology framework for the process of life goal-setting, so now it’s about self-reflection.

You will definitely be able to find inspiration all over the place for different possible goals, but because meaning is intrinsic, your answers will be unique.

With the aim of discovering your own values and inspiration, have a look at these self-reflection exercises and see what the right questions might be for you personally.

No matter what you’ve set as your life goals, adopt some best practice guidelines to make the whole journey a positive experience. Based on what we have looked at so far, we can draw a few objectives to keep in mind.

  • Be realistic. Try to keep things in perspective both when designing your goals and as you work toward them. Research indicates that the best goals are challenging, yet achievable (Locke & Latham, 2002).
  • A healthy goal is a positive ‘approach’ goal . Rather than setting negative, avoidance goals that have us working away from certain harmful, averse, or unpleasant outcomes, set yourself positive targets. Depending on whether they are intrinsic or extrinsic, therefore, they might be desirable, enjoyable, or ‘good’ in a deeper sense (Coats et al., 1996).
  • Be ready to fail along the way…but don’t let it stop you . Resilience is the capacity to persevere in spite of setbacks, and obstacles are inevitable in some form or another. So as well as accepting this inevitability first up, resilience is a useful skill to develop throughout your journey. How do you plan to overcome obstacles? Can you brainstorm some alternative pathways?
  • Involve others . As we’ve discussed earlier, family and friends can be invaluable. Not only do they help us generate ideas, but they are social resources that we can reach out to for support along the way.
  • Break them down where possible . Celebrating our wins along the way is the same as celebrating our progress towards a larger life goal. Whether that celebration takes place on a monthly, weekly, or even daily basis will depend on your unique aims and the pathway you choose to follow. Nonetheless, research shows that they are critical for momentum and motivation (Amabile & Kramer, 2011).

So, do you have a million things you want to accomplish? Or even just a couple of goals, but lots of milestones along the way? We don’t really need statistics to understand why writing them down adds some organization to the whole thing, but active planning can also boost our motivation.

Personal Strategic Planning

According to Brian Tracy, author of Goals! , getting from A to B is about personal strategic planning. Quite simply, his suggested approach takes organizational management principles and applies them in the personal realm.

Rather than aiming to maximize return on investment (ROI) as we would in corporate settings, we aim instead to boost our efficiency by reducing the physical, mental, and emotional energy we might waste on the journey. He calls it ‘return on energy’ (ROE).

The idea is to think in terms of human capital. If you like, we can think back to the generating pathways step we described earlier in Luthans et al.’s 3-pronged framework. When refining our pathways, we can think beyond just what’s feasible to reflect on what might also maximize our return on energy (ROE).

Unless walking to every EU country is a life goal in itself for you, might it not be more efficient to fly or take a train? Or, could you take a few extra days on your next business trip? Two very logistics-based examples, but hopefully they illustrate the premise of personal strategic planning.

Prioritizing Life Goals

Prioritization is about identifying the most personally important life goals you’ve designed and written down. The following might help (Collingwood, 2018):

  • After you’ve formalized them by writing them down, rank them on a scale of 1-5 or 1-10, or whatever works for you. As long as you systematically apply the same ranking system to all of them, the most important ones should stand out.
  • An alternative would be to categorize them first into whatever domains work best for them, then rank within each category. What’s your most important health goal? Career goal? The PDF goal-setting worksheets below are full of categories you might find useful, but you are unique, and there’s no one best way to go about it.
  • Is it feasible or realistic to focus on the top five goals? Or is three a more viable figure? Highlight, circle, or pick out the ones that are most worthy of your energy—what would make you happiest? What’s most meaningful to you personally, in terms of your values? (Interestingly, billionaire Warren Buffet would have you stick to the top five and avoid the rest.)
  • Get planning. What are the sub-goals you’ve identified? What resources will you need for each stage, and when will you need them? ‘Reverse engineering’ goals and working backward from the finish line is helpful for some people (Collingwood, 2018).
  • Find a good, but not necessarily the best time to start, as the latter might never come around. Then, use a planner to work it all out. When you’re scheduling, don’t forget celebrations as well as milestones.

Some useful planners include:

  • LifeTick – a free or paid online planning calendar;
  • GoalScape – which allows you to share your goals and create projects;
  • This free PDF , which is more of a planning tool than a calendar; or
  • Any of the free Full PDFs here from Passion Planner.

These life goals worksheets will hopefully be useful to you as a means of getting started.

1. Workbook for Goal-setting and Evidence-based Strategies for Success

Put together by Caroline Miller, The Ultimate Life List Guide author, this is an entire workbook about setting goals and staying on track. It is based on six concepts that come together as a strategy for designing goals and creating optimal conditions for success:

  • Finding what enables you to create a happy life;
  • Envisioning your best potential self, an intention which will motivate your actions;
  • Designing short- and longer-term life goals;
  • Cultivating an environment that facilitates your success;
  • Developing willpower and habits that support this; and
  • Encouraging a mindset conducive to long-term change.

3 particularly useful worksheets in here include:

  • The Mission and Purpose Worksheet – this guides you through creating your own personal purpose statement (p. 36);
  • The Evaluating Goals Worksheet – over several pages, you can assess how or whether your life goals meet certain criteria for success (p. 40); and
  • The Ifs, Ands, and Buts Worksheet – which focuses on overcoming obstacles (p. 67).

2. Goal Exploration Worksheet

Breaking down life goals into different areas can be helpful, and this Goal Exploration exercise provides you with 7 different categories that might stimulate your thinking. With useful prompts, a few tips, and some examples, the layout of this sheet includes spaces for 5-year, 1-year, and 1-month goals.

  • Social goals;
  • Career goals;
  • Physical goals;
  • Family goals;
  • Leisure goals;
  • Personality goals; and

3. Goal Setting Workbook

Starting on Page 7 of this Citrus College workbook , you’ll find useful information about long- and short-term goal-setting. There are brainstorming exercise and categories for your inspiration, such as:

  • I want to be…
  • I want to learn…
  • I want to give…

This is followed as you progress by questions about your goals:

  • “Are they achievable?”
  • “Does the goal come with an alternative?”
  • “Do I want to do what’s necessary to accomplish it?” and
  • “Is the goal compatible with my values?”

We write down our goals to formalize them in one respect, and in another, to give us a sense of personal accountability for their outcomes (Schlenker & Weigold, 1989). If we share those goals with others, we create even more accountability, as we’re ‘answerable’ to more than one person (Schlenker et al., 1994).

The first kind of accountability is internal, and psychologists suggest it motivate us to keep going if these goals are aligned with our personal values (Rutledge, 1998). This is all well and good, but how do we track and evaluate our progress?

Tracking Your Life Goals

First, as discussed, we can identify our goals and create clarity around them. Prioritizing them allows us to channel our focus on the top important goals, and one or more of the planners above will hopefully be useful for this.

We can then break down our larger, key goals into smaller sub-goals or objectives. These might be step-wise milestones, or we might have several alternative pathways running concurrently, but breaking down these goals allows us to plan better.

If you want to set deadlines or time frames for accomplishing each small sub-goal, feel free—this adds another layer of personal accountability and is commonly used in project management contexts.

Set realistic, sufficiently challenging time frames, and you’ll also benefit from a healthy amount of pressure— eustress , in other words (Brulé & Morgan, 2018; Mills et al., 2018).

When you have time-bound goals, therefore, you can better evaluate your progress. And from here, we can adapt or adjust our generated pathways accordingly to maximize our chances at success (Snyder, 2002).

Why the secret to success is setting the right goals – John Doerr

If it’s all a lot of information to take in at once—or if you’ve skipped ahead—here’s a neat recap. These goal-setting strategies and techniques draw from the literature we’ve mentioned already, starting with Locke and Latham’s work and moving on to what we know about motivation.

Let’s cover the techniques within the three-pronged strategy we discussed earlier for maximum relevance.

Goal Design

Based on what we know, the following techniques help us craft well-designed goals.

  • Set intrinsic life goals as well as extrinsic ones . This requires self-reflection on your personal values, as well as your psychological and self-fulfillment needs as a human being (Maslow, 1943). Aligning your goals with what you really consider important will make them more meaningful (Kasser and Ryan, 2001), and meaning is considered a key part of happiness in positive psychology (Seligman, 2004).
  • Set approach, rather than avoidance goals . Aim for positive outcomes rather than focusing your psychological, emotional, and physical energy on avoiding negative ones (Locke, 1968; Tracy, 2003; Locke & Latham 2006).
  • Make them clear and actionable . Ideally, you should be easily able to break these down into sub-goals after some thought on potential pathways. If you can create concrete steps that lead toward a positive vision of the future, it will be easier to start thinking about resources you might need (Luthans et al., 2006).
  • Make them challenging, but keep them realistic . When it comes to outcomes, excessively easy goals won’t motivate you enough and could be boring. Overly challenging aspirations, on the other hand, can lead to stress and overwhelm you (Locke, 1968; Luthans et al., 2006). Similarly, don’t rush yourself in terms of getting started if it’s not necessary, but don’t wait until the time is perfect, either.

Generating Pathways

These include some brainstorming techniques and ideas about creating the ideal conditions that support your goal pursuit (Miller & Frisch, 2009).

  • Brainstorm as many alternative pathways as you can . Think about all the potential ways you might go about achieving your goal and don’t be too quick to discount them. Give your creative brain a workout and record them as you go. This will keep you from forgetting them later down the line.
  • Identify the resources you’ll need . What is absolutely necessary for each step along the way? Then, what will make things easier for you? Consider people who might support you as well as more tangible resources (Emmons, 2003).
  • Plan out your progress if it helps . Think motivation and accountability, this time applying the eustress principle to the goal pursuit process rather than its outcomes (Frink & Ferris, 1998). Use a planner, an app, or whatever else you find most valuable, and don’t be afraid to adapt your pathway if it’s necessary.

Overcoming Obstacles

Here, some planning techniques and useful resources from elsewhere on this site, to help you stay on track.

  • Plan for potential obstacles . Part of being realistic means planning for contingencies (Luthans et al., 2006). What might stop you from pursuing one pathway and force you onto another? How can you avoid or overcome obstacles through proactive strategizing?
  • Use positive self-talk . Our self-talk is very powerful. Preparing proactively for worst-case scenarios helps counter pessimistic self-talk, but your perceived self-efficacy is also critical to goal accomplishment (Schunk, 1990). Hope is very important and positive self-talk plays a key role in overcoming obstacles (Snyder, 2002).
  • Develop resilience . Setbacks can take their toll emotionally and lead to disengagement (again, if we let them). It’s possible to develop your capacity to deal with setbacks through resilience training and exercises, so why not try some of these approaches ?
  • Evaluate your progress . Remember that your priorities might change along the way, so evaluation is not necessarily about success or failure. If you like, tweak your goals—make them more or less challenging, or change their nature as you see fit.

Empathy and sadness

But while there are real benefits to goal-setting, is the absence of goals really so terrible?

Essentially, this dives into a more complex philosophical debate. To put it succinctly, though, we can think of happiness as both subjective wellbeing ( SWB ) and eudaimonic wellbeing ( EWB )—or hedonic vs eudaimonic happiness .

The first is related to feelings of life satisfaction and the predominance of positive over negative affect, the second premises that life is about the pursuit of virtue and fulfillment of one’s own potential (Ryan & Deci, 2001; Diener et al., 2002).

What do you think?

Some apps will help you store your short-term goals in one place, and can be pretty handy if you’ve got objectives you’d like to stay on top of daily.

Goalify is an Android and iOs app that lets you log and review your objectives regularly. As well as sending you updates and reminders, you can compare your accomplishments against friends with identical goals. With this app, you can categorize, tweak, and get tips on how to better accomplish them. And let’s face it, gamification has its merits.

2. Coach.me Habit Tracker

This nifty app lets you do more than just list your goals—it’s pretty effective at keeping you accountable and is simple to use. You can log your targets and view your stats, ask questions of the community, and sync it with other gizmos. By breaking down the steps involved and providing helpful tips, you’ll be equipped to express your aspirations, outline an action plan, and highlight the significance of achieving your goals.

Step 1: Set Clear Goals

Achieving your goals starts with clearly defining what you want to accomplish. Take some time to reflect on your aspirations and think about what truly matters to you. Your goals may include academic achievements, career aspirations, personal growth, or any other area of your life that you wish to improve. Ensure that your goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART goals). By setting clear goals, you will be able to better articulate your vision in your essay.

Step 2: Plan Your Essay Structure

Before diving into the writing process, it’s essential to plan the structure of your essay. This will ensure that your ideas flow smoothly and logically, engaging the reader from start to finish. Generally, an essay consists of three main parts: an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

The Introduction: Begin your essay with a captivating introduction. Grab the reader’s attention with an anecdote, a relevant quote, or a thought-provoking question. Clearly state your goals and the significance they hold for you. Conclude the introduction with a concise thesis statement that presents the main focus of your essay.

Body Paragraphs: The body of your essay offers an opportunity to elaborate on your goals and the steps you are taking or planning to take to achieve them. Divide your body paragraphs based on the subtopics or themes you want to discuss. For each paragraph, present a specific goal, provide relevant details, and explain why it is important to you. Consider incorporating examples, personal experiences, or research to support your statements and make your essay more persuasive.

The Conclusion: Wrap up your essay with a strong conclusion that reinforces the main points you have discussed. Avoid introducing new information here. Instead, highlight the potential impact of achieving your goals and leave the reader with a final thought or call to action.

Step 3: Conduct Research

If your essay requires factual information or expert opinions, conducting research will provide you with valuable insights to enhance your writing. Utilize reputable sources such as scholarly articles, books, or credible websites to gather information that supports your aspirations. When referencing sources, make sure to cite them properly using the appropriate citation style (e.g., MLA, APA).

Step 4: Draft and Revise

Now that you have a plan and have conducted research, begin writing the initial draft of your essay. Start with the body paragraphs, as they contain the core content of your essay. Ensure each paragraph follows a logical flow and connects back to the main focus of your essay.

Once you have completed your draft, take time to review and revise. Pay attention to grammar, spelling, and sentence structure. Ensure that your ideas are presented clearly and cohesively. Consider seeking feedback from others, such as teachers, family members, or friends, to gain different perspectives and improve your essay even further.

Step 5: Add Personal Reflection

In addition to presenting your goals and action plans, be sure to include personal reflections throughout your essay. Explain why achieving these goals is meaningful to you and how they align with your values and aspirations. By sharing your personal insights and emotions, you will create a more engaging and authentic essay.

Step 6: Edit and Proofread

Before submitting your essay, it is crucial to edit and proofread your work. Review your essay for any errors, both grammatical and typographical. Ensure that your ideas are coherent and logical, and that your writing flows smoothly. Consider using online grammar checkers or seeking assistance from a professional editor if needed.

Writing an essay about achieving your goals allows you to reflect on your aspirations, establish a concrete plan, and demonstrate your determination to succeed. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can create a compelling essay that effectively communicates your goals and motivates both yourself and your readers.

essay about personal goal setting

Personal Goal Setting: Why, How to and (much, much) more

Personal goal setting

"If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else." – Lawrence J. Peter

You might brim with creative and constructive energy. You might have figured out all the intricacies of time management. You might have optimized your productivity to the max. You still need to focus your energy - or it very likely will be misdirected. Goal setting is the methodology to do just that.

This article will show you everything you need to know about personal goal setting. And quite a bit more. It explains why it is important to set goals, covers the different types of goals that there are, what timeframes you should think in, what makes a great goal, how to choose goals and how to achieve them, factors for long term success, helpful tools and pointers for further deep dives.

Focality: Deep planning, self-reflection and data-driven insights.

  • Keep focused on your goals
  • Be proactive
  • Unleash your potential.

Why is goal setting important?

Types of goals, what makes a great goal, timeframes / deadlines, the personal goal setting process in 3 steps, achieving goals, further reading, dive into personal goal setting.

The importance of personal goal setting boils down to two basic aspects: Taking control of your life and optimizing your productivity.

If you don’t have goals in your life, you will basically be adrift. This can actually feel relaxing in the short-term - you don’t have to make hard decisions about your direction, take things as they come. Unfortunately, it is also quite risky in the long-term. If you decide later on that you want to be somewhere else indeed, changing direction might be much harder than if you had steered this way from the beginning. For example, by the time you realize that your comfy unchallenging job will not satisfy or support you till retirement, a career change might not be that easy anymore.

"If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much." – Jim Rohn

You will also be much more productive with regard to your chosen goals. Research has shown that people who set goals are way more likely to achieve them. Having defined your goals gives you focus. You can more easily balance the everyday responsibilities, recognize what advances your interests and be generally less impulse-controlled.

Note that all this does not imply that you need to turn yourself into a workaholic. The point of personal goal setting is to take control of your life and getting the most out of it. It is up to you to choose an intensity that is right for you. It is perfectly fine to set goals that go hand in hand with a leisurely lifestyle. The important thing is that you make a strategic decision to do so. Because otherwise, circumstances will decide for you - which will rarely be in your best interest.

So what kind of goals can you set? There is no universally accepted classification. There are, however, a few commonly used categories.

Temporal: Short term, long term and lifetime

A very common categorization follows the time frames for which goals are set.

Short term goals are those that you want to accomplish within a few months or up to two years. Careful though: Do not confuse goals for the very short term with tasks or todo list items. Short term goals (like all goals) should define a desired outcome or state, not a task. More about that later.

Long term goals are more aspirational. They typically take at least a year to accomplish but are more commonly targeted at 5 years. Sometimes they can even span decades. Use these to follow your dreams, like building a company or buying a house.

When your perspective is even longer than long-term, we are talking about lifetime goals. Things that you want to achieve in your lifetime. This might be your legacy or grand personal achievements. e.g. give your children everything they need for a fulfilled life, win a world championship, life off passive income.

An alternative terminology for these categories is short term, intermediate-term (long term above) and long term goals (lifetime above).

Contextual: Personal, business, professional, career

Our life is typically divided into the personal and work-related domains.

Personal goal setting revolves around what you want to achieve besides professional success. Achievements in your hobbies or sports come to mind. Family, personal development, finances and health are more areas for which people often set personal goals.

Career, professional and business goals are a bit tricky to distinguish because they all are work-related. Career goals, as the name implies, focus on furthering your career. They are the bridge between personal goals and work-related goals because they focus on your personal career, not the company you work for. Examples would be getting promoted, negotiating a pay raise, taking on more responsibilities.

Professional goals are closely related. The key difference is that these do not necessarily involve improving your personal career. Professional goals can be assigned to you by your superiors to achieve some business goal. e.g. improving customer satisfaction by 20% or establishing a quality assurance process. Ideally, there is some alignment between your professional goals and career goals.

Business goals are not the goals of a person, but of a business. If you are self-employed business goals are your own goals as well. In larger organizations, business goals get broken down into sub-goals which are then assigned to teams or individuals.

Topical: Health, learning, fitness, etc

Another extremely common goal categorization is by topic. Compared to the other categorizations, this one splits goals into plenty of subgroups. The exact categories vary depending on who you ask and many people make up their own. These are the most common:

  • Intellectual
  • Personal growth
  • Relationship

Outcome, process and performance

Thinking of goals in outcome, process and performance is predominantly common in sports.

Outcome goals describe the desired end state. For example, winning a tournament, finish in the top 10, hit a sales milestone.

Performance goals are benchmarks in your performance that you want to achieve. Like running 5k in 20 minutes, having a 3% conversion rate.

Process goals define how you want to get there. e.g. make 60 sales calls per day, run every morning.

Less common types

While most people think of goals in the categories mentioned above, there are plenty of other taxonomies that you might come across:

  • Being goals, doing goals, achieving goals, having goals Being goals describe the person that you want to be; your values; your qualities. Doing goals are about the activities in your life that you want to execute. Achieving goals are milestones or events that you want to happen. Having goals are about possessions or material gains that you want to achieve.
  • End goals, means goals End goals capture the desired outcome, the “what” of your aspiration. Means goals describe the milestones of how you want to get there, the “how” of your aspiration.
  • Strategic goals, objectives Similarly, strategic goals describe the destination, while objectives define measurable milestones on your way to your strategic goal.
  • Active and passive goals Passive goals define a state. Something you want to be or have. Active goals are activities that you want to be engaged in.
  • Positive and negative goals Negative goals focus on things you want to avoid like “stop being a couch potato”. Positive goals focus on gains and achievements like “run 3 times a week”.
  • Visions and action goals Similar to end goals and mean goals, or strategic goals and objectives; visions capture your big aspirations, the desired achievements while action goals are the milestones on the way to your vision.
  • Quantitative and qualitative goals Quantitative goals are defined by a clear measure like “earn $100k+/year”. Qualitative goals are more subjective and require judgment to define success. An example would be “find a satisfying job”.

What type of goal should I use?

Now that you have been adequately swamped by all these types of goals you might be wondering which approach is the best one to use. Fortunately, you do not have to make a strict decision. You can use many of these categorizations in parallel to help frame your thinking.

What you should do is taking your time defining your big goals. In the frameworks above these would be the long-term and lifetime goals, end goals, strategic goals and visions. Always make sure that these are clear before moving on to short term or means goals. Otherwise, you risk losing sight of where you want to go - which is one of the main advantages of goal setting.

When you use Focality to achieve your aspirations, only the big goals are indeed called “goals”. The milestones on your way to achieving those and other more mundane tasks are called “objectives”. You always have your goals in view while planning your objectives. This helps to keep the end in mind and stops you from getting lost in obligations of daily life.

With this framing to think about your goals, you are ready to jump into the goal setting process. When you go about defining your goals you are probably wondering how exactly a great goal looks like. What are the attributes of great goals?

SMART goals

The most common framework for defining great goal qualities is called SMART. SMART is an acronym that usually stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound.

Over time, the acronym accrued several alternative interpretations. Wikipedia has a great overview of the most common meanings and alternatives :

  • Specific or strategic and specific
  • Measurable or motivating
  • Achievable or attainable; Assignable; agreed; action-oriented; ambitious; aligned with corporate goals; agreed, attainable and achievable
  • Relevant or realistic; resourced; reasonable; realistic and resourced; results-based
  • Time-bound or time-limited; time-based; time-oriented; time/cost limited; timely; time-sensitive; timeframe; trackable; testable

Read on to learn more about the SMART goal attributes as well as even more helpful characteristics of great goals.

Make sure that your goal is really clear. Sometimes we fall into the trap of chasing vague ideas of a goal. You need to make sure that you understand what exactly it is that you want to accomplish.

“Getting rich” is not specific. What is rich? Do you want to be a millionaire? A billionaire? Live off passive income? Earn 6-figures? These all require different strategies. So make sure to be specific.

Measureable

Remember the categories of quantitative and qualitative goals? Measurable goals are quantitative. There is an exact measure that shows when you have achieved your goal. Without ambiguity.

Depending on what you want to achieve, finding a measure can be challenging. Although the SMART methodology requires goals to be measurable, you should take this attribute with a grain of salt. For example, if your goal is to become more resilient, how do you know if you succeeded? Having a purely qualitative goal is all right.

Do not give up on measurability too soon, though. With a little thought, you can find a measure for most goals. “Become a better public speaker” can turn into “Improve my average feedback rating after public talks by 30%”.

Ambitious / challenging

Something that can be done easily is not a goal, it is a task. Goals should be ambitious to motivate you to get the most of your potential. Without a challenge, you don’t leave your comfort zone and have a harder time progressing. To lean on Steve Job’s words, you should try to make a dent in the universe.

"Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground." – Theodore Roosevelt

Actually, opinions are a bit split on this one. The origins of the SMART criteria are corporate goal setting. So if you set goals for this quarter, you definitely want them to be achievable. Employees who keep failing at their goals won’t stay motivated for long. Even then, the bar should not be set too low to encourage the best performance.

"A goal is not always meant to be reached, it often serves simply as something to aim at." – Bruce Lee

On the other hand, many people prefer to set egregiously big goals. Elon Musk aims to make humankind an interplanetary species, to cite just one example. For him, this is achievable - imperative even.

So you need to find the right balance for you. Big enough to motivate you to greatness and grounded enough to see a path to success.

This one is kind of obvious. It is difficult (to say the least) to achieve goals that are not relevant to you. You will have to expend a lot of energy and stay motivated over a long period to complete your quest. If your goal has no relevance to you, why bother? The whole point of personal goal setting is to guide your way and keep you motivated. Do not choose a goal that leads you astray or sabotages your motivation.

The time frame will influence your strategy for achieving your goal. You will have to act differently if you have one year than if you have five years.

There is also the huge danger of postponing your dreams because “something urgent came up”. It is much easier to resist the urge of the urgent when your dreams have a deadline.

As mentioned, the SMART framework has its origin in the corporate world. If you are setting goals for yourself, make sure that they are really yours. Make it personal.

Similarly, you should set valuable goals. What do you get out of it by achieving your goal? This does not have to be material gain, there is plenty of immaterial value to be gained. Be it emotional, spiritual or other.

Your goals should inspire. Inspire you, but ideally also inspire others. You will need the support of your peers at some point in your journey - this will be way easier if they can feel the vision of your goal.

Think about how to explain your goal to other people. Our inside-view, while inspiring to ourselves, is often not easily accessible to others. Spending a little time clarifying your vision will do wonders.

Although the term “positive thinking” has taken on a bit of a cliche at this point, it is actually grounded in research. Framing your goals in a positive way (achieving something vs. e.g. stop doing something) will set you in the right frame of mind to succeed.

Make sure that your goals are aligned with who you are, your values, your path in life. Sometimes it can be tempting to pursue something that is, when inspected closely, not really aligned with yourself. Maybe a very lucrative project which plays a bit too loose with your ethics or does not go well with your character. Avoid those and choose goals that align well with yourself.

We already learned that goals can be categorized by timeframes and that time-bound is an important attribute. Goals with a deadline are much more likely to be accomplished and a deadline guides you while prioritizing your daily responsibilities.

So what are good timeframes?

There are two fundamental approaches to timeframes in personal goal setting:

Define a timeframe for a chosen goal

Define goals for given time frames.

Say you have set the goal to become a master broomball player. How long will it realistically take you to achieve mastery?

To make an educated guess (also known as an “estimate”) you can break your goal down into smaller steps. Lay out a path to your goal and estimate how long each step will take you. Don’t forget to plan for some delays or you will be behind schedule pretty quickly.

Note that some goals come with a “natural” deadline. Want to run the Boston marathon? It has a date that is not negotiable. You should still go through the process to make sure / guess that you can make it till the deadline.

Know the famous interview question “Where do you see yourself in five years”? It might be cliche, but it is indeed a good question. It boils down to what goal setting is all about: To know where you are going. To paraphrase Lawrence J. Peter's quote , if you do not know where you want to be in five years, you will probably be somewhere else.

So go through the most important time frames and see if you have a vision for them. Maybe you already set goals to cover these. If not, think about what you want to achieve until then.

Here are some common periods to inspire your personal goal setting:

  • This month*
  • In five years
  • In ten years
  • In 25 years
  • Until retirement
  • Within my lifetime

* These would be rather short-term goals. Focality , which will help you manage your life with purpose, calls these operational goals objectives to make a clear distinction.

Now that you know all about what makes a great goal it is time to start choosing your goals.

First of all, take your time. Goal setting isn’t something that should be done on a whim. If you can’t wait to get started, set a few short-term goals ( Focality makes this easy) while you work on your long-term strategy. Hint: Defining a long-term strategy is in itself a worthwhile goal.

There are three basic steps in the personal goal setting process:

  • Collect & create

Understand yourself

To set the right goals for yourself, you must first understand yourself. What makes you tick? What motivates you? What is important to you?

Without this knowledge, you risk setting the wrong goals. Goals that sound nice on paper, goals that other people like, goals that are rooted in peer pressure. Goals need to be your own though.

To get a better understanding of what is important to you, define your core values. If you don’t want to do this freestyle there are some great resources out there that help you through the process. For example here is a simple 5-step process for defining your values . There’s also Schwartz’s Theory of Basic Human Values which identifies ten universal values you can prioritize and is based on extensive scientific study. And last but not least see our list of 570 personal core values for inspiration.

Create a list of possible goals

First, collect ideas for goals. Don’t decide if you want to pursue each goal just yet. You want to compile an extensive list so that you have a great base for a decision later. Do not worry about how you will get there or any specifics. Just focus on compiling an extensive list.

You can use the classical brainstorming technique and/or use goal setting questions to inspire ideas:

  • What do I want people to remember of me?
  • What is my ideal job description?
  • Where do I want to be in 5/10/20 years?
  • What do I enjoy doing the most?
  • What is the one thing that I should change about my life?
  • What would I do if I knew I could not fail?
  • What do you not like about yourself?
  • Which parts of my life conflict with my values?
  • > More goal setting questions

Do not rush this process. Collect ideas, then step away from the list and go about your life. Keep thinking. New ideas will come to mind, others will change. Our mind is remarkable in coming up with new ideas while doing something else - hence the famous shower thoughts.

By now you should have a list of potential goals that comprise much more than you can possibly accomplish. It is time to filter and prioritize.

Now you can start to think more critically. Let’s start with a quick elimination round. Go through your list of goals one by one. For each one, ask yourself:

  • Is this aligned with my values?
  • Is it relevant?
  • Is it worth my time?

If you answered “no” to any of these questions, remove the goal from your list.

Now sort the remaining goals by relevance. Here are a few pointers to help you judge.

Is it worth the sacrifice?

Any sufficiently challenging goal requires sacrifice. You will have to invest resources, be it time or/and money, that you could have invested elsewhere. There will be opportunity cost - the gains you would have received if you invested your resources in something else. So the big question is: Is this goal worth it?

Is it sustainable?

Similarly, is the required effort sustainable? Healthy in the long term? If your goal requires you to work 100 hours per week for many years, this is not sustainable. Elon Musk might be able to do this - juggling space exploration and transport electrification at the same time - and be a great source of inspiration for us all. But for most people, such workloads are a recipe for disaster. You will not achieve your goal if you burn out along the way.

Imagine your future once you have achieved this goal

How would your life look if you achieved this goal? How different would it be? How excited are you about your future life? If there is not much difference you should question whether this is truly a worthwhile goal.

Imagine your future without having achieved this goal

Do the same exercise in reverse: If you don’t do it - how would your world look like? Scary thought? Then this is a candidate for high priority. Doesn’t matter? Maybe it’s not that important after all.

Jeff Bezos’ Regret Minimization Framework

Relatedly, the founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, described his decision to found Amazon by using what he called a regret minimization framework. He wants to look back at his life at age 80 and have as few regrets as possible. Suddenly, many things take a different perspective that otherwise might be clouded in short term worries. In Bezos’ case, he came to the conclusion that not founding Amazon - no matter if he failed or succeeded - would haunt him. While giving up his cushy, well-paying, steady career to chase this dream would probably not end in regrets - even if Amazon would not play out. You can listen to Bezos explaining this himself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwG_qR6XmDQ

So imagine yourself at age 80. Would you regret setting this goal? Or would you regret not to?

Decision trees

If you managed to trim your list down to just a few options you can use a decision tree to decide which goal is the most promising one. Decision trees are used to help with decisions involving multiple steps. So you will have to think a little further and have to make some projections. As a result, you will have a clearer understanding of the possible scenarios.

Buffet’s 5/25 rule

There is an inspiring story floating around about a piece of advice Warren Buffet once gave to his pilot Mike Flint, who had been flying for him for more than 10 years. Worried about his career progression (“The fact that you’re still working for me tells me I’m not doing my job.”), he asks him to write down his 25 most important goals. Then he asks him to choose the 5 most important ones of that list. The clue? He instructs Flint to actively avoid the 20 unchosen ones. Do nothing for those, even if he has some spare time. Achieving the 5 chosen goals will require all his focus and the rejected 20 goals will produce the most tempting distractions.

Strictly speaking, this would conclude your goal setting process. You have found and set your goals. Of course, the next part of the journey is to actually achieve them.

Much of this will depend on your actual goal. Here are some domain-independent strategies that will help you succeed.

Plan proactively

The whole point of personal goal setting is to take control of your life and proactively steer it where you want to go. It is not enough though to just set these goals. You need to keep planning constantly. There will be challenges, other things will battle for your attention and your path might not be as clear as you initially thought.

Make a habit of always having a plan. What do you want to achieve today? This week? This month? Focality makes this easy.

Visualize the way

A common technique in goal setting is to visualize your goals. Paint a vivid picture in your mind that shows your future having achieved your goal. Doing this frequently helps to keep your eyes on the ball and primes your subconscious to keep working on it.

Here’s a lesser-known twist, though: Don’t just visualize the outcome, visualize the way . The way is what gets you to your goal, so this is what you should focus on. Visualize the process and important decision points. This will help you master your progress, especially in more challenging times.

Break things down

"Most impossible goals can be met simply by breaking them down into bite-size chunks, writing them down, believing them and going full speed ahead as if they were routine." – Don Lancaster

For every goal, there is a series of actionable steps that lead to the desired outcome. The better you understand these steps, the easier it is to achieve your goal.

First, define the major milestones that you need to achieve. Then keep breaking those down even more into sub-milestones. Repeat this process until you get chunks small enough that they can easily be done.

You do not need to break every milestone down at once. This would lead to a hard to manage volume of steps. You can work at different levels of abstraction. What is important is that you always know your next step. Worry later about steps that are far out in the future.

An easy way to do this is deep planning. Don’t create long sequences of steps that would constantly need to be adjusted. Instead, think in layers of timeframes. What do I want to achieve this year that brings me closer to my goal? This month? This week? Today? With Focality you can easily create such deep plans and follow through on them.

Use the power of habits

Humans are creatures of habit. Use this to your advantage. Think about what parts of your goal can benefit from a habit. This is typically easiest for fitness goals. Frequent running is a habit. It can be more challenging with other goals. Founding a company is not easily transformable into habits. But even there you will find opportunities for habit building. Start each day with 5 sales calls. Or with a tweet.

If you struggle with establishing habits, the books Tiny Habits and Atomic Habits are great resources to improve your habit building.

Focus on process / build systems

In motivational theory, there is the advice to focus on process, not outcome. Obviously, this is a bit conflicting with goal setting theory. You definitely should place emphasis on your goals - which are the outcome. However, the underlying advice is sound. As mentioned above in the context of visualizing, it takes a toll on your motivation if you only focus on the destination - simply because a well-chosen goal will always be challenging and take a lot of energy to achieve.

Do focus on your way to your goals. Because this is how you will get to your goals. And don’t just try to map out one single path. Try to build a process, a system. A tool that will get you where you need to go.

Here’s a helpful article that will help you leverage systems thinking for goal setting: Systems Thinking — The Essential Mental Models Needed for Growth

No more zero days

Another inspiring technique is called “no more zero days”. It is meant for those of you who aspire to achieve the one great goal and not quite so for many goals in parallel.

The basic gist is to make sure that every single day you do something to bring you closer to your goal. Never stop. If you can’t do much, do a little or even tiny bit. But never let progress towards your goal on any given day be zero.

This concept started as a comment on reddit but since then took a life on its own. There’s a subreddit , countless articles and even an app .

Don’t give up on your goal but consider alternative paths

“Be stubborn on the vision, but flexible on the details.” - Jeff Bezos

Sometimes it can be challenging to find the right balance between stubbornness and flexibility. It is important to be persistent so that you do not stray from your goal in the face of difficulties. To achieve big goals you need to be stubborn.

How you achieve your goals, on the other hand, is subject to change. Along the way, you will learn, make new experiences, get new information. The strategies you chose might turn out to be inadequate. Don’t cling to them once you realize that there is a better way.

Be extra careful when balancing multiple goals

Avoid setting more goals than necessary. Balancing multiple goals at once is hard. Still, it is often not possible to limit oneself to just one goal. Many people fail to divide their attention adequately. Here are some tips on how to deal with multiple goals.

Be careful not to be consumed by a single one of your goals. Often, there is one goal that stands out. That inspires you the most. That is the most exciting challenge. It is easy to forget everything else. Don’t. Plan your time proactively. Decide how much effort you want to invest in each goal and then plan accordingly.

Plan frequently. At the start of each day (or the evening before), define what you want to accomplish. This is the moment to consciously take a look at your goals and make sure that all are represented adequately. Do the same for each week and each month. Focality makes this easy.

Reflect frequently

Goal setting revolves about not being blind regarding where you want to go. There is another common blind spot though: How you are getting there. It is important to look ahead, but every once in a while also look back. Take a good look at what you have done and how it panned out. Learn from it. Make your next steps even better.

This resonates closely with the recommendation to build processes and systems. You and your actions are a system. Optimize it. Get better at what you do. To do that, you have to take a step back and reflect.

A good time to do this is at the end of each planning period. Think about what you wanted to achieve. Have you achieved it? If not, what was the reason? What was good about this period? What was not? What can you do differently next time?

If you use Focality , you can also learn from the aggregated stats of your plans. Is there a goal where you are more often failing your objectives than with other goals? How much can you set out to do before your plans start breaking down? Are there recurring reasons that cause you to trip up? Use these learnings to find the issues that are most promising to work on. And take a look at your aggregated good moments to get a boost of motivation and happiness.

In life, many people have a list of things they dream of and hope to accomplish.

Whether they are small goals, such as making up the bed in the morning before going for a morning jog, or larger goals, such as opening up a store, there are many possible life goals at your reach.

Let's take a look at a handful of ways you can better understand what life goals are, what goes into them, and how to best achieve those goals for personal development, well-being, and what you deem as a successful existence.

What Exactly are Life Goals?

As defined by K P Sivaraman Nair, the author of  Life Goals: The Concept and its Relevance to Rehabilitation,  published in the   Clinical Rehabilitation  scholarly journal,  life goals are desires that people hope to receive in life, upkeep, or avoid as they continue their quest in life as it pertains to what they want to accomplish in life.

Because people's perspectives vary depending on what stage of their lives they are in, life goals can be broad.

These kinds of life goals can include things such as the career sector, romantic or platonic relationships, fitness, and financial goals, to name some.

Why are Life Goals Essential to Set in Life?

Life goals are generally things that bring us joy, are interested in exploring, and we may have a brief understanding of how to achieve them.

Setting clear goals is vital as they help give you a sense of happiness, fulfillment, and purpose in all that you do — and that's a beautiful thing!

Goal Setting Helps Bring Transparency to Our Behaviors

As American psychologist Edwin Locke states in his  Theory of Goal-Setting  from the late 1960s, goal-setting correlates with motivation and task performance.

Essentially, the definitive and challenging goals, insight, and feedback promote more effective outcomes in seeing the aspirations through.

It’s worth noting that just setting goals won’t lead to desired results unless they are actioned. But they can still give us something to commit to.

If you want to get a new luxury apartment, it probably won’t be the wisest decision to break your lease or not save up enough money before you make that leap.

Still, acknowledging that this is something you want to do will help you choose some appropriate steps to get there.

Setting Goals Can Bring Joy into Your Life

If you have goals that are set on values you wish to attain, they will be worthwhile and meaningful.

Striving for something more, finding meaning, and a sense of purpose happens to be key element in the happiness theory within positive psychology. The “M” in “meaning” is also the word in the acronym  PERMA, a model for well-being by Martin Seligman .

Alongside positive emotion, relationships, engagement, and accomplishment, the theory encompasses aspects that would contribute to an ideal life.

Life goals give you the ability to pursue the most authentic aspirations of your choosing, which will lead to feeling triumphant when you get there.

Goal-Setting Encourages Strength

Once you think about what matters to you, you can focus on your inner strengths and passions.

According to studies, understanding and then anchoring those strengths give your confidence a much-needed boost. It can even encourage feelings of good health, well-being, and satisfaction in life.

How can you find and set practical life goals?

The key to making the most out of your life goals is to think about what you want to achieve and then commit to putting effort and time into it.

Here are some theories and objectives on how you can begin to make that happen.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals Theory

The theory of  S.M.A.R.T. goals  stemmed from author George T. Doran in a  1981 paper  published in  Management Review , which was called  There’s a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives .

Initially utilized in business situations, it expanded outside of that realm, becoming a popular goal-setting system for self-improvement.

S.M.A.R.T is an acronym that is aptly named. It’s an advanced approach to setting goals that are developed to get results in an achievable way without having to sacrifice your ambition.

Below is what the acronym stands for:

S - Specific

M- Meaningful

A - Achievable

R - Realistic

T- Trackable (time-frame objectives)

Check our previous  report on the S.M.A.R.T. Goals  for a more in-depth analysis.

Identifying Short-Term and Long-Term Goals

It is generally recommended that you set long-term and short-term goals. Short-term goals —which can be broken into steps – are easier to achieve, which gives much-needed motivation to grapple with longer-term goals.

Having a clear understanding of the exact steps you'll need to take to get to your desires, you're more likely to reach them.

Examples of Short-Term Goals that can lead to Long-Term Goals

Often, it’s great to get a glimpse of some of those short-term goals that are materializing into long-term goals. Here are some that can inspire you below.

Job and Work Goals and Higher Learning Goals

Nothing is wrong with wanting to elevate your position at work or transition into something else.

You can take virtual courses from EdX or Coursera or apply to a university, read a book, or watch a video to hone in on skills and talk to someone in your desired career   to see what potential internship and full-time opportunities are out there for you.

Fitness and Diet Goals

Health is wealth. Consider going to the gym once or twice per week to build your confidence, cut out as much sugar and processed foods as possible, and start eating healthier by incorporating fruits and vegetables, and other sources of protein.

Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water. According to the  U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine,   proper daily fluid intake is about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids daily for men and roughly 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids daily for women.

Other Examples of Key Personal Life Goals to Help You Live a Balanced, Purposeful, and Happy Life

Explore a city or country of your dreams.

Have a Clear Idea about the Relationships You Want

In life, you most likely have  relationship goals.  Or want to experience them.

Although the goals can be long-term or short-term, the primary characteristic they should have is a possibility.

You are going to want to tap into goal-setting as a way to grow and strengthen your own relationship goals; it’s best to set love goals that are measurable and feel achievable and optimistic for both of you when it comes to maintaining your relationship.

If the relationship still needs some work, you should consider a relationship counselor.

A website such as  Regain , which helps match you with a counselor that can help give you tools to enrich the relationship, boost connection and intimacy, and lead you in the right direction,

Certainly, some people are lucky enough to have the opportunity to drop into their laps, while others have to work a little harder to achieve those goals. Still, a little determination and faith in what you want will make the process even smoother.

Websites like Zen Business and Lifehack are filled with articles that can give you tips and tricks.

Reconnect With Old Friends

Jobs, distance, and life pressures can sometimes keep us away from some quality time with good friends.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to schedule a dinner or cafe run with them if there was genuine care and bond for one another in the past.

Become Debt Free and Other Financial Goals

You can save yourself a few extra dollars by avoiding buying something you don’t need, doing side hustles, make passive income such as writing an e-book or creating a course.

You may also be interested in investing in assets or the stock market so you can see your money grow.

Who wouldn’t want to have more disposable income and clear debts?!

Retire from Work Early

If you are someone who wants to retire early to travel, set aside time for passion projects, or simply are over the everyday workday.

To encourage this leap, you will need to make adjustments to your current spending budget, calculate your yearly retirement spending, estimate total savings needs, invest for growth, and monitor your expenses, to name some.

Overcome Your Deepest, Darkest Fears

Overcoming fears can be extremely difficult. In the United States, around 19 million people have one or more phobias that range from mild to severe.

And in Canada,  one in every 10 people has phobias.

Although this is challenging to overcome, let alone think about it, it is definitely worth the amount of effort it may take to free yourself from the feelings.

The ultimate goal should embody the goal of complete fearlessness.

Figure out what fears are limiting you at this very moment and start to work on them today.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy and a dose of meditation give your confidence the spark it needs.

Become a Mentor to Someone

If you have great expertise in an area, it’s a great idea to share those skills and knowledge with the world.

Mentoring someone is a fantastic way to encourage growth and opportunities to teach others and yourself.

Learn as Many Languages as You Can

Mastering more than one language is an incredible goal to accomplish in life. You learn a valuable skill to share with others around you while boosting more opportunities to venture out and communicate with so many different cultures.

Clean Up Your Home

A cramped and cluttered space promotes a distracted mind. To combat this, get rid of all the spare boxes, papers, and other items that you don’t need and tidy up your home.

Some of the things you don’t want or need in your life can also be donated to local charities or thrift stores in your area.

Practice More Mindfulness

Positive life goals are focused on helping you get the absolute most out of your time on this planet. And living a fruitful life requires an understanding of how to live in the present moment.

That's where mindfulness comes in.

As noted by  Psychology Today , mindfulness is defined as "a state of active, open  attention  to the present. This state is described as observing one's thoughts and feelings without judging them as good or bad."

It's so easy to overthink everything you've done wrong and stay harboring thoughts about the past. And when you continue to focus on what you feel are your biggest disappointments, you forget to live in the now.

Take more authority in your life by being more mindful of yourself at the current moment.

Ed Dwight is Finally Going to Space, 60 Years Later

Back in the sixties, an American named Ed Dwight thought he would be the first Black astronaut in space. He never made it, but years later, the 90-year-old is preparing for his inaugural flight.

A Hopeful Mission

View of Earth and satellite

In 1961, President John. F. Kennedy selected Air Force member Ed Dwight to enter a training program that would pave the way to NASA’s Astronaut Corps, reports CBS News . It was an opportunity that meant Dwight would become the first Black astronaut.

“I thought these dudes were crazy,” he recalled. Still, he went through the training and completed the program two years later. The Air Force recommended that he join the corps, but surprisingly, he wasn’t selected.

“So, all these white folks that I'm dealing with, I mean, my peers, the other guys that were astronaut candidates, and the leadership was just horrified at the idea of my coming down to Edwards and the president appointing me to the position,” Dwight said.

When Kennedy was assassinated, so was Dwight's journey to space. He left the Air Force in 1966 to pursue art and spent the next 60 years creating sculptures of iconic figures in Black history. According to CBS , more than 130 of Dwight’s pieces have been shown in public spaces and museums.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t until 1983 that the first Black astronaut, Guion Bluford, actually reached space.

A Second Chance

Dwight is now 90 years old, but he never gave up his dream of going to space. Sixties years later, it’s finally happening. The man is one of six civilians who will board the upcoming June Blue Origin flight to the edge of space.

The company, which was founded by Jeff Bezos, has already completed 22 successful space missions. Many of those flights have included celebrities, like Michael Strahan and William Shatner.

When Shatner flew into space in 2021, he became the oldest man to do so at 90 years old. Now, Dwight will tie that record with his $250,000 ticket, which is sponsored by Space for Humanity .

Sometimes a dream may seem too far-fetched to ever become a reality. Or perhaps you were on the road to realizing a dream, but something came up, and it just didn’t happen. This story proves that sometimes a dream might not happen the way you thought it would, but that doesn’t mean it can’t still come true.

Dwight's upcoming journey into the atmosphere, where he’ll experience weightlessness and a spectacular view of space and Earth, isn’t what he initially thought his journey to space would be like. Yet he’s still going, and in that way, his dream is coming true.

The takeaway for all of us is that we should never be afraid to dream, and to dream big. Sure, the dream might not come true, but by giving up you’re ensuring that it won’t. Dreams give us a sense of purpose and meaning, and the more we invest in them, the more complete we can be.

Sometimes it may take a whole lifetime, but as Edwards proves, dreams do come true.

USPS Worker Hand Delivers Lost World War 2 Letters to Woman

There's something special about a letter; just ask Alvin Gauthier. As a U.S. postal worker for the past 20 years, he's seen his fair share.

So when he stumbled across some long-lost letters postmarked 1942, Gauthier delivered. Literally.

He hopped in his car and drove TEN HOURS round-trip — on his day off and at his own expense — to ensure they finally reached their destination...82 years later.

Better Late Than Never

Alvin Gauthier, a USPS carrier from Grande Prairie, Texas, hand-delivered WW-II era long lost letters to soldier's family.

Gauthier, a mail carrier in Grande Prairie, Texas, discovered the cache of WWII-era letters when they inexplicably landed in his mailbag one day.

"I was getting ready for my route and found some letters that were dated back to 1942, so World War II," Gauthier told NBC affiliate KXAS-TV .

"My main thought was I have to find this family." Alvin Gauthier via KXAS-TV

The letters, some typed and some hand-written, were obviously from a soldier to his parents, "Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lamb."

As a military veteran himself, Gauthier recognized the historical value and sentimental importance of his find. He understands the impact letters have on boosting a soldier's morale, having written and received letters from his own parents during his tour in Iraq.

He made it his mission to get the letters home.

Simply addressed to Jacksonville, Alabama and without a physical address, he didn't have much to go by. But this was one mystery he was determined to solve.

Using the clues he did have, a military return address and the recipients' names, Gauthier enlisted the help of local media in Little Rock, Arkansas.

They delivered. After running the story, Gauthier received several emails and phone calls from people from all over. He was able to track down JoAnn Smith, the soldier's sister.

Rather than putting the letters back in the mail, Gauthier decided to hand-deliver the precious correspondence. On his first day off, he hopped in the car and drove 5 hours across state lines to reunite JoAnn with her brother's legacy.

"I could have stuck them in the mail, but it's kinda like sometimes you have to go above and beyond," he said.

"Just go the extra mile … or 379 miles.”

When the veteran arrived at Smith's door with the letters, she was shocked...and thrilled.

“I’m very excited and very tearful,” a crying Smith told Fox affiliate KLRT-TV about the moment. “For me, it’s a connection to my family.”

Smith was only two years old when her older brother, Marion Lamb, went off to fight in WWII. He served in the South Pacific with the 96th Infantry Division, his unit earning the Philippine Republic Presidential Citation Badge for their bravery. He passed away in 2010, at the age of 89.

Smith is the last remaining sibling out of six kids. The letters mean the world to her.

The Importance of Connection

JoAnn Smith is reunited with letters written by her older brother, Marion, during WWII

After more than eight decades, these long-lost letters finally came home.

Gauthier didn't just deliver letters, he delivered priceless memories. For Smith, they are so much more than mere words on the page, they are a tangible link to her brother and the past. It's a gift she'll never forget.

“I just appreciate Alvin,” Smith told KLRT-TV. “He has really gone out of his way and people connect on different levels and I feel as connected to Alvin as I do my family.”

500 Words Essay on Goals in Life

Goals are the compass that guides us through life, providing direction and purpose. They are the stepping stones towards achieving our ultimate dreams and aspirations. Goals, whether personal, professional, or academic, are significant as they shape our lives, fuel our ambition, and give us a sense of accomplishment.

Setting goals is a fundamental component to long-term success. The basic reason for this is the ability of goals to create a bridge between our present and our desired future. They serve as motivators, pushing us to step out of our comfort zones, face challenges, and strive for improvement. Goals act as a roadmap, providing clarity and focus, enabling us to make informed decisions and avoid distractions.

Goals also foster resilience, as they often require sustained effort and dedication. They teach us the value of perseverance, as the journey towards achieving them is usually filled with obstacles and setbacks. However, these challenges serve to strengthen us, enhancing our problem-solving skills and fostering personal growth.

Goals can be broadly categorized into short-term and long-term goals. Short-term goals are immediate objectives that can be achieved within a relatively short timeframe. These could range from completing a project, passing an exam, or learning a new skill.

Long-term goals, on the other hand, are more extensive and require a significant amount of time and effort. Examples include obtaining a degree, launching a successful career, or buying a house. Short-term goals often serve as stepping stones towards the achievement of long-term goals.

Goal Setting Strategies

Effective goal setting requires thought and planning. One popular method is the SMART framework, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This approach encourages us to set goals that are clear and precise, have a defined timeline, are realistically attainable, and align with our broader life objectives.

Another crucial aspect of goal setting is maintaining flexibility. Life is unpredictable, and circumstances can change unexpectedly. Therefore, it’s essential to be adaptable and open to modifying our goals as needed.

In conclusion, goals are integral to our lives. They provide us with a sense of direction, motivate us to strive for improvement, and offer a sense of accomplishment when achieved. Whether they are short-term or long-term, personal or professional, goals give our lives purpose and meaning. Therefore, the process of setting and achieving goals is a lifelong journey that leads to personal growth and fulfillment.

Four P’s of Goal Setting

You need goals to get things done. However, not every goal is effective. The way that you word your goals will determine whether or not you reach them. When establishing goals, it is important to remember the Four P’s of goal setting. They need to be positive, personal, possible, and prioritized.

They Need to Be  Positive When you are  creating goals , remember to make sure that they are positive. This means that you focus on what you want to achieve rather than what you want to avoid. For example, you would write, “I will achieve a promotion.” rather than “I will no longer work at this horrible job.” Staying focused on the positive will help improve your outlook and remove any negativity. This, in turn, will improve your chances for success. Reaching your goals will automatically help you avoid your present circumstances. When creating positive goals, remember to be as specific as possible.

They Need to Be  Personal When creating goals, they need to reflect your dreams and desires. Goals that are not personal are ineffective. Your goals should be about you and only you. For example, “My boss will appreciate me.” is an ineffective goal because it is not about you. It is possible to be a wonderful employee and still be unappreciated. A better goal would be, “I will find a supervisory position where I am appreciated for my talent.” If your goals are not personal, you will never achieve them. Making goals personal places the burden of responsibility on you, but it also means that other people do not determine when you reach your goals.

They Need to Be  Possible When creating goals, you need to make sure that they are possible. When you set impossible goals, you set yourself up for failure and disappointment. Creating possible goals demands that you be honest with yourself. Some goals may require continued education or experience to achieve while others will remain out of reach. For example, it is not possible for someone to become a famous singer without any talent whatsoever. You need to assess your talents and determine what you can achieve with hard work and what will be impossible for you to accomplish. Once you have determined which goals are possible for you to achieve, success will be within reach.

They Need to Be  Prioritized Brainstorming goals can become overwhelming. You will probably have more goals than you can handle. This is the time to prioritize your goals. Begin by numerically ranking your goals and choosing the five goals that are the most important to you. Choose these goals based on your passions, and make sure that they cover all areas of your life: professional, health, personal growth, finances, etc. All of your time and energy should be spent working towards these goals.

You should place your other goals on the back burner. It is not possible to focus on 20 goals at the same time. In fact, you should avoid the other goals at all cost. You risk becoming side tracked with less important goals if you continue to entertain them. You will need to reprioritize your goals periodically. For example, you can reprioritize after you achieve one of your top five goals.
