Maryland Supreme Court Orders Redo in Adnan Syed Case Due to Victim's Family Rights Violation

  • United States

The Maryland Supreme Court has ordered a redo of the 2022 court hearing that freed Adnan Syed, ruling that the victim's family's legal rights were violated.

This decision is the latest development in the high-profile case magnified by the "Serial" podcast. Syed was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 2000 but was released in 2022 after evidence flaws were identified.

Maryland's Supreme Court upheld a lower court's decision to reinstate Syed's conviction, citing inadequate notice given to the victim's family, who were not able to attend the hearing in person. Syed remains free as appeals continue through the state's court system.

An exam cuet pg is conducted by NTA, you have to fill this form and then a two hour exam held, after that merit is released.

The application form process waa really easy. We had a college desk open during the college hours for the admission. Eligibility of the course is any graduate in any stream . The exams conducted are pretty much standardised and are held twice annually as per the semestee system followed so we have 6 semesters in total divided over a period of 3 years of the law school. The admission process could have been made better in a way that there should be a buddy assigned to each new applicant for guidance at ang step and also the college helpline numbers can be made more responsive.

PhD from Delhi University (DU): Eligibility, Fees, Date 2024

Kopal Srivastava Aug 28, 2024 1K Reads

Starting from the 2024-25 academic session, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that the National Eligibility Test (NET) score can be used for admission to Ph.D. programs instead of the entrance tests conducted by different universities. The University of Delhi will also adopt this new policy.

Guidelines for Ph.D. Admissions (2024-25)

Here are Some Guidelines for Ph.D. Admissions (2024-25):

1) Categories Based on NET Scores:

  • Category 1 : If you qualify for JRF and Assistant Professor, you are eligible for Ph.D. admission.
  • Category 2: If you qualify as an Assistant Professor, you are also eligible for Ph.D. admission.
  • Category 3: If you only qualify for the Ph.D., you are eligible for Ph.D. admission

2) JRF Category Admission:

  • Admissions under the JRF category will follow UGC guidelines from the notification dated November 7, 2022.

3) Weightage for Ph.D. Admission:

  • For Categories 2 and 3, 70% of the admission decision will be based on your NET scores and 30% on your interview performance. Your Ph.D. admission will be based on the combined merit of these scores.

4) Validity of NET Scores:

  • The NET scores for Categories 2 and 3 will be valid for one year for Ph.D. admissions.

5) Entrance Exams for Specific Subjects:

  • The University may conduct entrance exams for Ph.D. programs in subjects not covered by the NET, like Portuguese, Italian, and Engineering.

6) NET Examination Application:

  • Candidates should apply for the UGC NET Examination, in June 2024, as per the schedule announced by the NTA.

What are the admission criteria for a PhD admission to a PhD program?

Check the points below to know the admission criteria for admission to Delhi University (DU) for a PhD.

  • Entrance Test: You need to score at least 50% in the Entrance Test to qualify.
  • No Guarantee: Qualifying the Entrance Test doesn’t guarantee a fellowship or admission to the Ph.D. course.
  • Choose a Sub-discipline: You must select a sub-discipline offered by the department when applying online.
  • Final Selection: The final selection is based on an interview. The interview will assess your research competency, the feasibility of your proposed work, its relevance to new knowledge, and the availability of seats and a supervisor. University rules also apply.
  • Eligibility and Verification: If you’re selected, your admission will depend on meeting all eligibility criteria and having your documents verified after the interview.
  • Fellowship Availability: The Department/University may change the number of fellowships or decide not to award any in a given year.

Entrance exams accepted by the Delhi University for a PhD program

The PhD Entrance Test will be held once a year, and the eligibility for interviews will be valid until the next test. M.Phil. interviews will also be held once a year. PhD interviews may happen twice a year or more, depending on seat availability.

If there’s a second round of interviews, candidates need to re-register on the online portal within the given timeframe. Entrance Tests in different departments will be scheduled to let candidates take tests in more than one subject if they wish.

The Entrance Test will be a qualifying exam with a pass mark of 50%. There’s a 5% relaxation in the qualifying marks for SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) and differently-abled candidates, making the pass mark 45%.

If there aren’t enough candidates from these categories, the Departmental Research Committees (DRCs) will find other ways to fill the seats, considering candidates from National Level Tests and other categories.

There are various entrance exams accepted by the Delhi University. Some of them are mentioned below :

du phd in law admission 2022

  • UGC-NET: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has assigned the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct the UGC-NET exam. This test determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for the roles of ‘Assistant Professor’ and ‘Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor’ in Indian universities and colleges. Since December 2018, the UGC-NET has been conducted by the NTA in a Computer-Based Test (CBT) format. The awarding of the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and/or eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends on the candidate's combined performance in Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC-NET. Candidates who qualify only for the Assistant Professorship are not eligible for the JRF. Those who qualify for the Assistant Professorship must follow the rules and regulations of the respective universities, colleges, or state governments for recruitment. The UGC-NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December, to maintain a regular examination cycle.
  • JRF:  The Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) Exam 2024 is a national-level entrance test in India. It provides fellowships to students who wish to pursue research in their chosen fields. The JRF Exam 2024 is conducted by six different organizations, each handling various subjects and study areas. Below is a table that gives an overview of the different JRF Exams held in India for 2024.

CSIR NET

Conducted by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for science students. Clearing it opens up teaching and research positions in educational institutions and PSUs.

UGC NET

Organized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to assess candidates for assistant professor roles in universities and colleges. Covers 83 subjects.

ICAR JRF

The ICAR AICE-JRF/SRF (Ph.D) exam offers admission to 25% of doctoral seats in accredited colleges and 100% seats in ICAR Deemed Universities. Focuses on awarding JRF/SRF in Agriculture & Allied Sciences.

ICMR JRF

Conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as the first step toward a Ph.D./Research program with financial support. Usually announced in July.

CSIR JRF GATE

Targets GATE-qualified engineering graduates and GPAT-qualified pharmaceutical graduates for research-based Ph.D. programs at CSIR labs. Offers fellowships to work with CSIR scientists.

DBT JRF

Offered by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) for students pursuing research in biotechnology. Selection is through the online Biotechnology Eligibility Test (BET).

  • SLET: The State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) is held to appoint lecturers in state universities and colleges. Although the exam is managed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), it mainly ensures candidates meet the minimum standards for teaching or research roles. Due to its importance, many states have adopted a similar test to SLET. The UGC conducts this exam to find qualified candidates for Assistant Professor roles in fields like Humanities and Social Sciences. The SLET, also known as SET, is offered in English across various states in India. However, the commission realized that a national exam like SLET might not fully cover regional subjects. There were also requests from candidates to take the exam in their native languages. In response, state governments and union territories were given the power to hold their own SLET exams. This led to the SLET or SET being offered at the state level, now available in both English and regional languages.Simply put, while the NET is for those aiming to become lecturers across India, SLET candidates will work within a specific state. The final selection for SLET is based on the marks obtained in the State Eligibility Test.
  • CUET (PhD): The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the online Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for PhD admissions at top Indian universities like Delhi University (DU), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU), and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU).This entrance exam ensures a fair and efficient way to evaluate students, giving everyone an equal chance, no matter their background. By taking the NTA PhD entrance exam for central universities, you can access prestigious institutions, explore a wide range of disciplines, and enjoy a simplified application process. The selection is based on merit, with opportunities for funding, networking, impactful research, and gaining national or international recognition. It's also a chance for personal growth and contributing to knowledge, paving the way for academic and career success.

What Points Should I Remember While Taking Admissions At Delhi University For The Phd Program?

  • Registration Fee: For the Ph.D. program, there is a non-refundable registration fee. For SC/ST/PwBD candidates, it's Rs 300 (Three Hundred Rupees Only) per program. For UR/EWS/OBC-NCL candidates, it's Rs 750 (Seven Hundred Fifty Rupees Only) per program.
  • Admission Process: Admission to the PhD program at Delhi University depends on how well candidates fit specific specializations and whether they meet all the conditions set by the University of Delhi's ordinances.
  • Important Guidelines: You must carefully read the Bulletin of Information to ensure you meet the eligibility criteria, understand the major research areas, and know the requirements for a research proposal at the time of registration.
  • Seat Availability: Departments or Centers can decide not to fill vacant PhD seats if they don’t find suitable candidates. Check the respective Department’s website for the list of Allied Subjects and updates on admission lists.
  • Document Verification: At the time of admission, you must appear in person at the respective department for verification of original documents. Departments or Centers will verify all certificates and documents before granting admission.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must carefully check the eligibility criteria. No additional criteria exist beyond what the University has stipulated on its website and in the Ph.D. Bulletin of Information (BOI) for 2023.
  • Eligibility and Document Verification: The University of Delhi (UoD) is solely responsible for determining eligibility and verifying documents for admission.
  • Stay Updated: Candidates should regularly check the University’s admission website and the respective department’s website for updates and communication-related to admissions. The University won’t be responsible if candidates miss information or updates. It’s the candidate’s responsibility to regularly check their dashboard, email, and admission websites.
  • Compliance: Failing to meet the admission requirements, including not submitting documents or paying fees on time, will result in losing the right to admission.Fraudulent Documents: If any documents submitted are found to be fake or non-genuine at any stage, the candidate will not be given admission, or if already admitted, their admission will be canceled without prior notice. If this is discovered after the program is completed, the degree will be revoked, and legal action will be taken.
  • Provisional Admission: Participation in the admission process is provisional. If eligibility requirements are not met at any stage, the admission will be automatically canceled, and legal action may be taken.
  • Seat Availability: The number of seats mentioned in the Ph.D. Bulletin of Information for 2023-24 may change.
  • Supernumerary Seats: Additional seats will be available according to University rules.
  • Special Consideration for Faculty and Staff: Teachers and non-teaching staff working at the University of Delhi can directly appear for an interview. These will be considered supernumerary seats.
  • Non-Refundable Admission Fee: The University will not refund the admission fee if a candidate is found ineligible at any stage.
  • Adherence to Rules: The University reserves the right to cancel the admission of any candidate who violates the University of Delhi’s rules and regulations.
  • Restrictions on Full-Time Programs: A candidate cannot register for the Ph.D. program if they are already registered for any full-time course at any other university or institution. They also cannot undertake another full-time course while enrolled in the Ph.D. program.
  • Unreserved Category (UR) Merit List: The merit list for the UR category will include all candidates in order of merit, regardless of their category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS). No candidate can be excluded from the UR category merit list because of their category. Discrimination based on caste or category is not allowed, and the University will take strict action against any violations.
  • ST to SC Seat Allocation: If there are not enough eligible ST candidates for a particular Ph.D. program, the remaining ST seats will be offered to eligible SC candidates, and vice versa.
  • Publication Requirement: Ph.D. scholars admitted in the 2023-24 session must publish at least two research papers in Scopus or UGC Care-listed journals before submitting their thesis. They must provide evidence, such as a letter or reprint, to confirm this.

To apply for a Ph.D., you need at least 55% in your Master’s Degree (or a 'B' grade in the UGC 7-point scale) in the same or a related field from a recognized university. There’s a 5% relaxation for OBC (non-creamy layer), SC, ST, and Persons with Disability. The exact allied subjects for each department will be decided by the department's DRC. You cannot register for a Ph.D. if you are already enrolled in another full-time program. To qualify, you must score 50% in the Entrance Test, but passing the test doesn’t guarantee admission or a fellowship. Once selected, your admission is conditional on meeting eligibility requirements and verifying your documents. The department or university may adjust the number of fellowships or choose not to award any in a given year.
