Thesis Studio

Landscape architecture design thesis.

Sidh Sintusingha

design thesis unimelb

Studio Description

Designers are facing challenges that extend far beyond the traditional definitions of the professions. Uncertain economic times, unprecedented ecological challenges, an ongoing pandemic, and a growing unrest at the privatisation of public life have fuelled anxiety over urbanisation. The era of the grand design vision implemented by forward thinking government is over.

This studio challenges students to engage with the politics of design in landscapes. Designed landscapes can no longer be framed as a standalone vision but instead must respond and contend to a broader politic.

Defining a Politics of Design could include (but not restricted to):

  • The politics of aesthetics;
  • Politics of inclusiveness within public space;
  • Politics of climate change (tension between long term ecological outcomes and short term financial agendas);
  • Politics of the Covid-19 pandemic;
  • Alternative notions of land ownership and management;
  • Challenging conventions within design;
  • Politics of tourism;
  • Politics of implementation;
  • Reconciliation
  • Politics of Identity; etc.

Studio Outcomes

Thesis students are required to operate independently, engaging in research, and formulating a ‘thesis’ position that informs the design process and outcomes. Students are to:

Identify key theoretical, ecological and technical issues within their thesis briefs to specifically translate into landscape architecture .

Critically employ precedents from within relevant design disciplines that focus on the identified issues and critically engage in the design process.

Clarify insights the design brings to the discipline – within the broadest social, environmental and ethical contexts – through developing a strong and consistent approach to the context, program, aesthetics and technologies of the final design.

Provide evidence of multiple design explorations – an iterative approach clearly documented.

Develop materiality and technical aspects to a high degree of resolution, considering landform, form, space and program.

Effectively articulate the design through image, model and text representing the thesis intents, skillfully applying scale, graphic techniques, drawing and modelling conventions, appended writing and verbal presentations.

Studio Leader

Dr Sidh Sintusingha is Program Coordinator, Landscape Architecture at the Melbourne School of Design. Before joining academia, he practiced as an architect and landscape architect in Thailand and Australia. His research addresses socio-cultural, political, environmental and scalar issues relating to urbanization and the speculation of retrofits towards urban sustainability in Southeast Asian cities (inclusive of Australia).

Subject Overview:

This subject is the culmination of each student's studies in Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Urban Design. It will consist of a number of autonomous studio groups offering a range of opportunities for students to demonstrate an original approach to design synthesis in the relevant discipline, which is based on research and critical thinking. These studios may offer an interdisciplinary experience with students working alongside others in a parallel design discipline.

Students will be expected to demonstrate mastery of design resolution, conceptual engagement and aesthetic expression.

With course coordinator approval, high-achieving students may undertake the Design Thesis as an individually supervised design investigation. Similarly, under exceptional circumstances and with course coordinator approval, the Design Thesis may be undertaken as a written thesis.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this subject, students will be able to:

Current Directions in Interaction Design Thesis Research

5 September 2024

Jan 30 - Mar 30 2025

*Malmö University*

This course will survey a group of recently completed Ph.D. theses in interaction design representing different areas of and approaches to the discipline. The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a diverse repertoire of how interaction design theses can be structured and to support them in positioning themselves within the field.

The doctoral students will work in teams where they will be responsible for digesting and presenting one Ph.D. thesis, analyzing the focus, key methodology, and knowledge contribution. They will also serve as an opponent for another thesis, where they get to train their ability to pose critical and constructive questions. The course coordinators will provide the thesis that will be used in the course, but students will get the opportunity to rank and wish which ones they find the most interesting.
