by Eli Collins-Brown | May 3, 2021 | Blog , Canvas , Student Engagement | 0 comments

Canvas offers instructors some incredibly powerful tools to view course analytics, individual student analytics and quiz statistics .

The wealth of information provides instructors with a comprehensive view of student engagement as well as insight into areas for improvement and redesign.

Course Analytics using New Analytics

Learning how to use Course Analytics in Canvas is essential to those Instructors primarily using Canvas to teach online. The information provided in New Analytics will guide instructors to better understand overall participation and engagement from their students. With New Anayltics, Canvas also offers the ability to recognize positive and negative trends to make improvements and adjustments to course quality; easily identifying those students who are struggling, problematic items or areas in your course that may need adjustment.

New Analytics provides:

  • Analytics Graphs – Compare the course average with an individual assignment, course section, or student filter using the chart graph comparison  or  data table comparison
  • Activity by Date – View average weekly online participation analytics as an interactive chart graph  or a  data table.  The course average weekly online participation analytics can also be compared with an individual student or section using the chart graph comparison  or  data table comparison

Another feature provided to instrucors using quizzing in Canvas are quiz statistics. The feature is available to instructors when a quiz has been published and at least one submission has been recieved for the quiz. The quiz summary will show all score percentages as well as the quiz average score, high score, low score, standard deviation (how far the values are spread across the entire score range), and average time of quiz completion. Instructors can view and download a CSV file to view a Student Analysis or Item Analysis for each question in the quiz.

Available info from Quiz Statistics:

  • Student/Item Analysis – Instructors caDownload CSV files to view Student Analysis or Item Analysis for each quiz question to count all student attempts in the statistics.
  • Quiz Item Analysis – Item analysis may not generate results within specific quizzes. For more detailed information about item analysis limitations and calculations please refer to the Quiz Item Analysis PDF for detailed information about Reliability , Difficulty , and Item Discrimination Index .
  • Question Summary  – Instructors can view an entire quiz summary that shows all score percentages. The quiz summary also shows the quiz average score, high score, low score, standard deviation (how far the values are spread across the entire score range), and average time of quiz completion.
  • Question Summary Chart  – The quiz summary chart is interactive; users can focus on a specific segment of the chart by selecting a range with their cursor, such as viewing the number of students who scored between 0 and 50 percent. Scroll down the page to see data for each question in the quiz.
  • Question Breakdown  – Quiz question shows the total percentage of students who answered the quiz question correctly. Each question includes a breakdown with each question answer choice.

Assignment Statistics

Assignment statistics (average/low/high score) are now available through the Analytics tool. To enable this tool in your course and view assignment statistics, follow the steps below. Please note: this tool is only visible to instructors and TAs. It is not visible to students even when enabled.

  • Go to the Settings area of your course
  • Click the Navigation tab
  • Scroll down to the Analytics Beta box and click the three dots on the box
  • Select Enable
  • Save your changes on this page

Next, click the Analytics Beta link in the left menu of your course.

By default, you’ll be given analytics on the weekly activity in your course. To view assignment statistics:

Mute Grades

The option to “mute” grade columns (so that grades and comments for an assignment do not show to students) has been replaced by the Grade Posting Policy option. You can set the Grade Posting Policy on each column in your gradebook or set a default Grade Posting Policy that will apply to all grade columns in your course. The instructions for each option are outlined below.

If you would like to change the Grade Posting Policy on an individual column:

  • In the Grades area, hover over the column header and click the three dots that appear

grade-posting-policy.png

If you would like all columns in your course to be muted/hidden to students by default:

gear-icon.png

  • Click the Grade Posting Policy tab

default-manual-post-grades.png

A note about the Hide Grades option: After you have input grades for an assignment, you will notice that, for the corresponding grade column, you have the option to Hide Grades. This option does not appear until a grade has been entered for this assignment. Hide Grades is a way to hide grades after the fact. We strongly recommend that, instead of using the Hide Grades option, you set the Grade Posting Policy to Manual.

Hide Student Names

This is now done through Anonymous grading and Moderated Grading features already in Canvas. You can also still hide student names in SpeedGrader.

 'Treat Ungraded as 0' option

Update late policies .

gradebook gear search field

  • Auto apply grade for missing assignment - allows you to automatically apply a grade percentage for submissions labeled as Missing. (A submission is labeled Missing when the due date has passed and the assignment has not been submitted.)
  • Auto apply Grade for late assignments - allows you to automatically apply a penalty to submissions with a status of “Late”  (a submission is labeled Late when it is submitted past the due date).
  • Set the late submission deduction  to percentage and the interval of deduction (per day/per hour).
  • Set the lowest possible grade percentage , which defines a threshold under which a student will not be scored, regardless of how late the submission is when submitted.
