Nagarjuna has promoted his new film, Wild Dog in a very aggressive manner in the last few days. The film is out today and let’s see if the film lives up to the hype or not.

Vijay Varma(Nagarjuna) is a suspended NIA officer who is brought back to nab the terrorist who planned bomb blasts at Gokul chat and Lumbini Park in Hyderabad. Vijay Varma takes up the mission and even traces the terrorists. But things are not that easy as criminal sets base in Nepal. So, how an Indian officer goes to Nepal and nabs the terrorist is the story of Wild Dog.

Plus Points:

One of the biggest plus points of the film is Nagarjuna himself. He looks extremely fit as the NIA officer and does well in all the action episodes. His character has been showcased in a realistic manner and Nag does quite well in this setup.

The actors who play Nag’s assistants are quite impressive and do their roles well. Ali Reza gets a meaty role and does well as the commando. If used well, he can be a good actor in Telugu. Sayami Kher enters the scene in the second half and is good in her action-packed role. Diya Mirza as Nag’s wife shines in a few scenes.

The second half is where the action picks up as all the thrills showcased during this time are impressive. Especially the thrills that are showcased during the climax when Nag crosses the border look good. The action scenes in the second half have been choreographed well.

Minus Points:

The film has a dull first half as nothing much happens during this time. The film starts on an impressive note but the same grip is not continued. Things become interesting only during the interval point. The thrill that a terrorist-based film needs to have is missing during the first half.

The story is simple as the proceedings are straightforward. The manner in which NIA tracks the terrorists need to look gripping but that is not the case here.

The film is based on bomb blasts and the hero’s daughter dies in one such blast. There should be a strong emotion regarding this but is also not created. The villain chosen is dull and has no face value. Wild Dog has so many repeated scenes and the curiosity of what is going to happen next is missing.

Technical Aspects:

So much hype was given about Thaman scoring BGM but he does an average job as his BGM is nothing great. The production values of the film are decent and so was the camerawork. The editing is decent and the action shots have been designed well. The film has neat dialogues and a good production design.

Coming to the director Solomon, he does a passable job with the film. He has chosen a realistic story and set it up well. But his narration is dull in the first half. Solomon makes things gripping in the second half and narrates the film well with decent thrills during the climax.

On the whole, Wild Dog is an action drama that has an interesting premise. Nagarjuna leads from the front and the second half has good thrills. But to enjoy this part, one should sit through the dull first half. This film is made for the general Telugu audience with a new setup and different action. So don’t go in with a mindset of watching a gripping OTT kind of a thriller as Wild Dog has its own pace and style.

Wild Dog Movie Review: An honest thriller that plays it a bit too safe

Wild Dog by debutant Ahishor Solomon wastes no time to get to its core point. Inspired by true events, it opens with the 2010 German Bakery blast (renamed in the film), which sets up the introductory fight of swashbuckling National Investigation Agency (NIA) officer, Vijay Varma (Nagarjuna). The gun-fight is bloody, brutal, and massy sans the usual slow-motion shots. When one of the officers takes a moment to think about whether to kill the terrorist on the other end, Vijay shoots the terrorist and says, “ Champaka pothe chasthav (If you don’t kill, you’ll die).” This happens to be the only character illustration of his we get through the whole film, which derives its title from the epithet Vijay is awarded for his ferocious, gun-friendly nature. 

However, post the introductory fight, we never see this ruthlessness again. While it's understandable that his daughter’s death during the film's recreation of the Gokul chat bombing would mellow him, the script tames him completely. The intent to keep the protagonist likable is a real problem. He is a killing machine, a father dealing with the death of his only daughter, a dedicated officer committed to bringing down terrorist organisations, but he is also the charming Nagarjuna. The attempt to balance this stoic character with the endearing persona of the star acts as both a boon and a bane. Nagarjuna’s presence makes the film effortlessly watchable, but the consequent lightness of the character makes the film feel a tad simple and safe.

While excessive melodrama is often deemed a show-spoiler, Wild Dog is one of those rare films that makes you wish some melodrama had been milked from the terrible real-life tragedies the screenplay is built around. In the opening scene, we see a young woman who was smiling a few moments ago, walk towards the camera and cry in anguish, having lost an arm in the bomb blast. It's a fairly potent image. We never see her again though. Yet another powerful moment comes when Vijay talks to a hospitalised survivor. We see a teardrop, mixed with blood from his injuries, running down his face. It’s the furthest the film goes to draw emotional investment. Otherwise, it’s all about guns, terrorists, and covert operations. There’s little to no time for drama. And so, we never truly comprehend the deadly situations these characters are frequently caught in nor find a way to care for them.

The one-line character sketches don't help either. There's Hashwanth (Pradeep), who's ordered to join the operation when he on his honeymoon; Caleb, who's having trouble finding a bride; Arya (Saiyami Kher), whose idea of an aggressive RAW agent is sporting a stone-faced look; and Ali (Ali Reza), who has an acting bug deep inside; and Rudra (Prakash Sudarshan), who has no notable feature. Barring Ali, whose character trait is expanded into an important plot point, none of them go beyond being functional in combat sequences. Likewise, Vijay's wife, Priya (Dia Mirza), makes Yazhini from Vivegam and Anjali from Baby look like fully-fleshed characters.

It's also impossible to overlook the fact that almost every wrong-doer in this story is a Muslim. Now, this could be a function of the screenplay drawing from real-life operations. And while the film does avoid actively portraying the community in a bad light, it also keeps from leveraging the good Muslim cop at its disposal, making this yet another instance of the film playing it safe.

The writing is sharpest when it focuses on individual set pieces. The finely choreographed action ranges from hand-to-hand combat to shotgun showdowns. An extended sequence before the intermission built around the reveal of the antagonist, Khalid, does a great job at building the tension. We know that Vijay and his team will bring Khalid to justice, but the how of it keeps us guessing. By the time the sequence ends on an abrupt note, we are on the edge of our seats.

On the flipside, some of the dialogues are quite juvenile. When Vijay and his team realise their plans to nab the terrorist mastermind might have been leaked by an insider, Vijay helpfully says, "Our lives are in danger." When an explosion sends Vijay into a trance-like state, we see him having a lovely time with his daughter. She asks him what he'd do if someone hurts her, and Vijay replies, "I'll kill everyone," with his usual charm. Coming at a crucial juncture, the too-literal line irks.

In all, Wild Dog is an honest attempt to tell the story of a brave officer and it manages to do it without drenching the story in nationalism, a hot cake at the moment. It should have been wilder though.

What’s it about?

Vijay Varma (Nagarjuna), the best officer National Investigation Agency (NIA), a counter-terrorist task force that was established in 2008, has is no longer works with the agency due to a personal incident. 

When bomb blast rips Pune city, the case is handed over to NIA and Vijay Varma is called back to lead the case. Upon knowing that the mastermind behind the blasts is Khalid Bhatkal, Vijay Varma’s team plan to nab him in Mumbai. Their plan goes wrong and Khalid escapes to Nepal. 

Vijay Varma launches an undercover operation named Wild Dog to bring Khalid to India.  

‘Wild Dog’ is based on true incidents (the makers put it as ‘true blasts’) that occurred in places like Hyderabad, Pune, and other cities in India. Indian Mujahideen’s Yasin Bhatkal has been sentenced to death by an NIA court in Hyderabad in 2016 for hatching the bomb blasts.

‘Wild Dog’ is loosely based on these developments and tells this story of an undercover operation taken by the NIA team to nab Yasin Bhatkal. But the film has changed names (Yasin becomes Khalid) and incidents and has added cinematic liberties. 

Directed by Ahishor Solomon, who is better known as the writer of hits like ‘Oopiri’ and ‘Maharshi’, the premise of ‘Wild Dog’ is simple but interesting. The first half of the film focuses on bomb blasts, introducing Nagarjuna and his time, identifying the terrorist. It goes plainly. At the interval point, the film takes a dramatic turn and comes to the main plot point – ‘operation Wild Dog’, an undercover operation to nab Khalid Bhatkal.

The final moments are grippingly narrated. The nail-biting climax, which seems to be inspired by the Hollywood film ‘Argo’, makes the film watchable. The action stunts in the second half are also shot well. 

However, this story should have been told in a more gripping manner. Much of the film is plain and straight, with little exacting points. The entire first half is dull. The emotional and patriotic aspects of the movie are not properly used. It suffers from one main thing: lack of suspense. 

Coming to the performances, Nagarjuna fits perfectly in the role of an NIA officer. At the age of 60, he is fit to be an officer. He does the role well. Among other actors, Ali Reza and Atul Kulkarni leave an impression. Dia Mirza’s role can be termed as a cameo. She appears only twice in the film for a few seconds. 

Cinematographer (the Himachal Pradesh’s sequences and action stunt masters have put in their best foot forward among the technicians. Director Solomon has done a pretty average job. 

Bottom-line:  ‘Wild Dog’ is a decent action entertainer. It works to some extent. The climax portions are handled better despite the largely dull first half and plain narration. It is for niche audiences, though.

Wild Dog - A not bad actioner that is unfussy but lacks the thrills!

Action thrillers set around a mission more often than not follow a similar template. And the predictability increases when you have a star leading the mission. Wild Dog starring Nagarjuna is the kind of film that keeps it simple. It avoids the commercial trappings associated with a typical Telugu mainstream actioner and tries to go about things in a cool and unfussy manner. The key here is that it 'tries', as the results are a mixed bag.

What works in Wild Dog is that it is rather focussed right from the word go and the entire film is a stretch of one operation. Hero glorification is rather muted and his backstory and emotional baggage are kept to a bare minimum. But the constant adrenaline rush or the associated thrill that is the primary reason for this genre to exist is sorely missing. The chases across geographies , the stunts and the near escapes - all these play out in a rather mechanical fashion. The villains are cardboard characters and even the hero and his team do not bring much to the table except for the effort to sound cool. The stunts aren't exaggerated but for a film that does not rely on emotional connect and is being treated like a video game, you need the stunts to capture your attention.

Bottomline :

Wild Dog is a passable actioner that remains watchable but it barely offers the thrills of the genre.

Nagarjuna Akkineni likes to experiment with his films and often works with budding filmmakers. His latest outing Wild Dog is helmed by newcomer Ahishor Solomon and it is promoted as an action thriller. Here’s our review of the film.

Story: Wild Dog is based on a series of bomb blasts in Pune and Hyderabad following the horrific 2006 bombings at Gokul chat, Hyderabad. The home department assigns the case to NIA officer Vijay Varma who is nicknamed Wild Dog. Can Vijay and his team nab the terrorists? If yes, what are the challenges they face during the investigation?

What about on-screen performances?

Nagarjuna is fit as a fiddle. His one-man show is the main asset of the film. He excels as a ruthless NIA officer. Dia Mirza makes a brief appearance and she delivers a fine performance. Saiyami Kher is good and she performs particularly well in action sequences. Ali Reza, Prakash Sudharshan, and Appaji deliver excellent performances.

What about off-screen talents?

Realistic action thriller is a rarely used explored genre in Telugu cinema and Wild Dog is one of the very few Telugu biggies to fall under this category. The terrorist bomb blasts in Hyderabad form the core plot of the film and the director narrates the proceedings without any deviations. The story in itself is intriguing and packs a punch. But Ahishor Solomon’s screenplay could have been better. The first 30 minutes are solely dedicated for the establishment of premise and that could have been avoided to give the film a better start. The second half is filled with action sequences but there aren’t many thrilling elements.

Shaniel’s cinematography is very impressive and he gives the film a new feel with his brilliant work behind the lens. Thaman’s background score gels with the theme and elevates certain sequences. Editing is crisp.

Wild Dog is powered by Nagarjuna’s stunning performance and has a very good premise. But the screenplay should have been laced with more thrilling elements which can keep the audience on the edge of the seats. There is enough action in the film but thrills, not quite.

WILD DOG MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

The best part of the covert operations with an interesting name 'Wild Dog' has the ageless wonder Nagarjuna Akkineni, making light of the head of an NIA officer. Marshalling his resources to a nicety, the actor pulls off a seemingly difficult role with panache, grit and endless determination.

With a fitness level that can test a youngster, the actor essays his character to perfection. That these officers are unsung heroes is told explicitly, that if they fall on duty, they could languish in a prison abroad and if they are lucky to return home successfully, the best part is in their identity getting protected and they can move on to their next mission.

Getting fine-tuned to his character, thanks to the training from ace choreographer David Ismalone, known for his expertise in the Fast and Furious 7 and Ong-Bak: Muan Thai Warrior films, the actor's painstaking lessons in combat postures, communicating with signs and the best part of how to hold the gun in a losing situation has been brought out with great visuals.

No stranger to the cop roles, Nagarjuna is in familiar terrain in the picturesque areas of Manali, and the culmination round in Nepal. As an NIA officer, Vijay Varma, the actor banks on the solid support of Saiyami Kher as an astute RAW agent who knows her job like the back of her end. The investigating segments are well brought out in the old city of Hyderabad and shifting gears in the hustle and bustle of Mumbai and Pune.

Director Ahishor Solomon, who had impressed Nagarjuna with his story-telling in Oopari, has churned out a well-researched story, taking his own time to script before the execution part. A story inspired by the aftermath of the devastating blasts which shook Hyderabad in the early 2000s has been told with all the faithfulness. The longing and suffering of the beloved ones are the pièce de résistance of the script which stays focussed like a horse with blinkers on.

When the horse goes by the name of Nagarjuna, you expect the other competitive horses to put their might on. The supporting actors rise to the occasion, underplaying the role and taking the instructions of their head to the letter.

Nagarjuna impresses with his raw acting and appeal - the grey hair, clean-shaven look with a bit of scar on the face, helping with the characterisation. On the flip side, while director Solomon has tried his best to avoid cliches, one or two creep in. However, he must be lauded for not wasting time and getting to the plot quickly.

While the climax twist is to be appreciated, in hindsight, it does come across as a job not well-thought-out, but kudos for the experimentation. For those of you who haven't had much of their fill of spy thrillers, Wild Dog is an amiable ride.

Wild Dog starring Nagarjuna Akkineni, Dia Mirza, and Saiyami Kher, directed by Ahishor Solomon has finally arrived at the theaters  today on 2nd April. Bigg Boss Telugu 3 fame Ali Reza, Appaji Ambarisha Darbha and Avijit Dutt are also the part of Wild Dog. Let’s see the story of Wild Dog.

Story:  A blast happens in John’s bakery.  Vijay Varma aka Wild Dog (Nagarjuna) and his team NIA  get the responsibility to nab the criminals. With a small twist, the address of the terrorists are known to be in Nepal.  Vijay  Varma is on a secret mission to Nepal and in the hunt of the mastermind behind the criminal and terror activities.  How he leads the investigation, form the rest of the story of Wild Dog.

Performance:   Wild Dog is a  movie that deals with the terror attacks. Nagarjuna is playing  NIA officer Vijay Varma, who is also known as Wild Dog.  He is one of the major assets of this film and has given noteworthy performance. Diya Mirza comes up with a clean performance but she has minimal scenes. Saiyami Kher is fine. Ali Reza does a good job in his role.  The rest of the cast of Wild Dog are ok.

Technical:  The writing  of Wild Dog is not very strong and too convenient.   S Thaman’ background score is the main asset of this film Wild Dog.  The background score is pulsating and plays an integral part in  Nagarjuna starrer. The runtime of  Wild Dog is one of the plus point . The cinematography by Shaneil Deo is flawless and the editing is good. Art department has done a superb job and the production values are good. The Investigation scenes are satisfactory.

Analysis:  Nagarjuna’ performance in Wild Dog makes the audience attached to the film. Go and watch it.

Star Performance

Nag fits well in the role. Diya Mirza did her job well. Saiyami Kher and Ali Reza had done what their characters needed.

The director started the story on a quick note and he takes no time in setting up the characters. But, something slows down the pace and it is back to the pace before the interval. The action sequences are well-choreographed and Nagarjuna played it so well. The second half is interesting than the first half. The antagonist should have been a better choice. Some emotional elements are missing out. The cinematography is good and the BGM is okayish. The narration should have been better in the first half.

Wild Dog Review, What’s Behind?

King Nagarjuna comes up with an action thriller Wild Dog based on true incidents of series of bomb blasts in Hyderabad and other places in the country. The film marks Tollywood debut for director Ashishor Solomon who previously directed a Bollywood film John Day and worked as writer for super hit films like Oopiri and Maharshi. Will this film provide break for Nagarjuna whose last few films bombed at box office?

Wild Dog Story Review:

ACP Vijay Varma (Nagarjuna) who is also a victim of terrorists attacks in Hyderabad rejoin NIA to catch the key player behind all the bomb blasts in India for last few years. He along with his team is on a mission to catch the terrorist leader. After a failure attempt in India, they go all the way to Kathmandu in Nepal where the team has many challenges. Will the mission Wild Dog be accomplished?

Wild Dog Artists, Technicians Review:

Director Ashishor Solomon penned the story based on true events and tried to make it as a commercial entertainer including fictional elements. The storyline is definitely intriguing as it is about catching the terrorist leader behind many bomb blasts in over years including series of blasts in Hyderabad. But, the narration was not as convincing as the story promised. Though his intense research is witnessed in investigation process which depicts how NIA functions, the lack of emotional connectivity plays the spoilsport. Rather giving enough space for investigation, Ashishor should have given space for other elements which would have made it an engaging watch.

It’s a tough job to capture action sequences and chasings, Shaneil Deo’s camera work is one of the major highlights. S Thaman too tried hard to fire up the visuals with his pulsating background score. Fortunately, the film doesn’t have any songs. Dialogues by Kiran Kumar are potent. Shravan Katikaneni has cut the film for a crisp runtime of 129 minutes. Still, there are few unnecessary elements in the final cut. Stunts by David Ismalone and Sham Kaushal are just outstanding. The action sequences give edge of the seat feel. Production values of Matinee Entertainment are definitely top-notch.

Onto performances, Nagarjuna played an action-packed role and he steals the show with his one man show. He is outstanding in action sequences. The actor who played the terrorist leader has done good job. All the team members of the mission did their parts aptly. Dia Mirza is limited merely for 3 to 4 scenes. Saiyami Kher has got a meaty role and she is good. Atul Kulkarni and Anish Kuruvilla were okay.

Spy thrillers generate special interest and moreover the film’s story is based on true incidents. Above all, the film also discusses about the horrific events of Gokul Chart, Lumbini Park and Konark Theatre bomb blasts. Ashishor Solomon has done a good job in gathering the sufficient information about the mission, but he has showed his inexperience in handling the subject.

Without wasting any time, the film begins with a bomb blast in a popular bakery in Pune and the government hands over the case to NIA which is still a new agency but was established mainly to catch terrorists. With a small flashback episode Nagarjuna makes his entry as a NIA officer on a mission to eradicate terrorists in the city. Not much scope is given to family emotions and another flashback of Gokul Chat bomb blast unveils personal loss of Nagarjuna. The mission to catch the kingpin of the bomb blasts was bit lengthy and would have been handled well. The intermission sequence gives hint about the team set to fly to Kathmandu in search of the terrorist leader.

The latter half starts off on an interesting note with an attack on Wild Dog team in Kathmandu by unknown persons suggesting there is a corrupt officer in the department. And Saiyami Kher makes her entry with this action block. However, the narration turns very predictable and a marriage episode where the team misses the target too lacked the engaging and thrilling factor. Pre climax action sequence is cool, followed by an extended climax portions.

On the whole, Wild Dog is a mediocre action thriller. It would have become an excellent film with a perfect execution of the script. Thankfully, the director got excellent backing from all the technical team. Nagarjuna played an action-packed role and he is the biggest asset. CJ goes with 2.75 star rating and it will surely impress action movie lovers.

King Nagarjuna needs a hit as he is surrounded by a series of flops. The actor loved the concept of Wild Dog and gave his immediate nod. Talented writer Solomon is returning back to direction after a while with Wild Dog. Nagarjuna, Dia Mirza, Atul Kulkarni. Saiyami Kher, Ali Reza played the lead roles in this action entertainer that is all about the ISI attacks on Pune and Hyderabad. Niranjan Reddy’s Matinee Entertainments are the producers. Wild Dog is releasing today and here is the complete review of Wild Dog:

Wild Dog is the story of Vijay Varma (Nagarjuna) who is a ruthless cop and leads NIA Special Team. He gets shattered with the demise of his daughter in a bomb blast in Hyderabad. After staying away from NIA for years, he gets a call from the Indian government to lead the team on a mission to nab the masterminds in the blast’s case. Vijay Varma who is popularly called Wild Dog leads the team to catch Khalid, the key accused in the case. Watch Wild Dog to know about their special mission which makes Vijay Varma and his team proud.

After the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, the Indian and Telugu audience watched hundreds of shows, web films on terrorism and action. Wild Dog has nothing new and interesting to offer right from the plot to the narration. Wild Dog is neither racy nor completely dull. It has some good moments but the narration is never gripping. Nagarjuna shines as Vijay Varma but this alone cannot drive the film. The first half of Wild Dog is ok to watch but the audience will have their own complaints. Some of the episodes are silly.

The process of investigation looks outdated and it has nothing new. With many modern techniques being adapted, the team relies on a sketch artist to find the face of the criminal and the hunt to find the name of the main accused is so long. The team of NIA are just a step away from nabbing Khalid but he misses without any trace most of the time. This will surely disappoint the audience. Team Wild Dog finally lands in Nepal and those episodes too are not worth watching. The climax portions too are so simple and remind us about several Bollywood films.

Nagarjuna shines in the role of Vijay Varma who plays a honest NIA cop in the film. The role looks perfect for his age and he looks natural with a scar and grey hair. Dia Mirza has couple of scenes as Vijay Varma’s wife. Atul Kulkarni gets a tailor made role as a cop who struggles to convince the government against the odds. Saiyami Kher gets a challenging role and she a full length role in the second half of Wild Dog. Ali Reza and the team of Wild Dog did their part well. All the other actors are good and did well.

Wild Dog has a simple plot and it is inspired by several crime thrillers. The screenplay should have been gripping and more intense. The dialogues are good. Thaman delivers an impressive background score and the cinematography work is apt. The production values should have been better. Solomon takes Wild Dog on a serious note but the second half of Wild Dog has enough flaws. On the whole, Wild Dog will have a limited appeal.

Wild Dog is a film that will have a limited appeal because of several such attempts on digital platforms in the recent times. Nagarjuna and his team are good but the second half of Wild Dog has its own flaws.
