Doctoral research travel grant.

  • Financing & Support
  • Internal Funding & Appointments
  • Graduate School Travel Funds

The Doctoral Research Travel Grant provides funding for doctoral students traveling to conduct scholarly research, either within the US or internationally.

Adam Lanman

Doctoral students can apply to the Graduate School for up to $1000 to cover travel and related expenses for scholarly research. Given funding limitations, an application does not guarantee support. Some programs have independent funds to support such travel; students should check with their Director of Graduate Study (DGS) for more information.

*Please note that in an effort to more equitably meet the current travel funding needs of graduate students, starting Summer 2022, the Doctoral Research Travel Grant  will not be a matching award and no longer requires that students receive funding from outside sources to be eligible to apply.

All applications and associated documentation must be submitted online through  UFunds . Please email  [email protected]  with any questions.

Award Eligibility

Doctoral students in years 1 - 6 or on a COVID Appointment Extension Students are eligible to apply for doctoral research travel funding if they are active doctoral students in years 1-6 or doctoral students on a COVID Appointment Extension during the entire duration of the travel associated with the award. Students currently on leave are not eligible. Master’s students are not eligible. Students enrolled in degree programs in the Division of Biology and Medicine are not eligible; please see the  BioMed Travel Awards .

Traveling for research The Doctoral Research Travel Grant is available for both domestic and international research travel. Students must provide a one-page summary of proposed research activities. Please note that travel to attend courses, workshops, meetings, or conferences is not eligible for this award.

Provide a copy of your Graduate Student Digital CV (GSDCV) Students must provide a current copy of their Graduate Student Digital CV. More information about the GSDCV can be found on the Graduate School’s  GSDCV page .

One successful Doctoral Research Travel Grant per academic year Students can receive one Doctoral Research Travel Grant per academic year (June 1 through May 31) as determined by the end date of  travel.

Apply at least 14 days before the start of your travel Applications must be submitted through UFunds at least 14 days before the start of travel. Students not able to make this deadline should email  [email protected]  to see if an exception can be made. This requirement allows the Graduate School time to process applications and notify students whether they will receive funding or not prior to the start of travel.

Provide an approved Safety Plan, if applicable All students are required to register their travel plans in  TravelSafe  and, in addition, some international travel destinations require completion of a Safety Plan in  TravelSafe and approval from the Global Travel Risk Assessment Committee (GTRAC). Find current US DOS travel advisory levels in  TravelSafe  by clicking on the 'Travel Advisories' tab (destinations at Level 3 or 4 - designated at High Risk - require GTRAC approval). Check Brown’s current travel guidelines and requirements on the  International Travel Risk Management  webpage. Additionally, transactions with  comprehensively embargoed countries , including certain academic collaborations and the exchange of research materials, may require authorization from the government. If you are considering collaborating with or traveling to an embargoed country, you must contact Brown's  Export Control Team  well in advance.

Using your Doctoral Research Travel Grant

The Doctoral Research Travel Grant is processed as a reimbursement through a student’s home department. Prepaid expenses such as airfare and prepaid hotel rooms can be submitted for reimbursement prior to travel. Expenses that are not paid for in advance, as well as per diem meals, can be submitted once the student returns from travel. All documentation should be submitted to a student’s home department for processing within 30 days of the completion of travel.

Please refer to the  Graduate Travel Fund Reimbursement Guidelines  for details about the reimbursement process and what documentation to submit.

Find your perfect college degree

In this article, we will be covering...

“First, you get your bachelor’s degree, and you think you know everything. Then, you get your master’s degree, and you realize you don’t know anything. Then you get your doctorate, and you find out that nobody knows anything.”

While we can’t find information on who said these words, we can’t help but laugh! You, a student pursuing your doctoral degree, may even laugh at it because there’s a grain of truth to it. Your doctoral dissertation, after all, will likely be about creating new knowledge or building on old knowledge because “nobody knows anything” in a manner of speaking.

But why are you pursuing a doctoral degree when your master’s degree will suffice for most jobs? There are even people who believe that it’s a waste of time and money for many reasons. Some people push for it because of the numerous benefits that it brings.

PhD Scholarships fact 1

So, which one’s a better perspective? A doctoral degree is about contributing to the existing body of knowledge through original research. It is considered an introduction to independent research in your chosen field, with your doctoral dissertation as the first of many intellectual masterpieces .

Let’s first take a look at the unfavorable view because there’s also some merit to it. For one thing, there’s the cost of doctoral education that, in U.S. universities, the average is $133,340 . In Ivy League universities, the cost can be higher – at Harvard University, for example, the full tuition needed for the first two years of study is $54,032, exclusive of health insurance, housing, books and supplies, and food expenses.

Yes, indeed, it isn’t cheap to get a doctoral degree in the United States , not even in one of the lesser-known universities!

In addition, there’s a sense of dissatisfaction among doctoral students. You may feel, at one point, that you’re doing slave labor, no thanks to the 10-hour workdays and low pay during your research.

Your employment prospects may also seem uncertain, considering the competition due to the oversupply of Ph.D. holders. The number of Ph.D. holders exceeds the number of employment opportunities for them, too! Such a disconnection partly stems from the high degree of specialization required to get a doctoral degree, not to mention that Ph.D. holders have high employment expectations.

Still, the number of doctoral degree holders in the U.S. has more than doubled between 2000 and 2018! In 2000, there were 2 million Ph.D. holders, and by 2018, there were already 4.5 million. Why do people pursue doctoral degrees despite the myriad of challenges that come with them?

PhD Scholarships fact 2

Here’s why.

  • You have a clear edge in getting higher positions and, thus, higher pay. Studies have shown that a Ph.D. is a contributing factor toward earning over 20% more than people with master’s degrees. In a PayScale comparison, Ph.D. holders earned $107,000 per year, on average, while master’s degree holders earned $84,000 .
  • Your specialized knowledge and skills are highly marketable. You will likely enjoy a flexible career path, whether you choose a career in public service or the private sector. Your career will also be characterized by the highest lifetime earning potential and the lowest unemployment rate! Your Ph.D. training will also strengthen your critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills, which are highly sought after by employers.
  • You will be a recognized knowledge creator, a rare skill sought after by society and employers, too. You have gained both the discipline and ability to search for, introduce, and defend new knowledge, even under the most stringent scrutiny. Your competencies will lead to a leadership position as you gain respect and prestige.

Are you still worried about the financial expenses of getting a Ph.D. in your field? We completely understand that $ 50,000 plus per year plus the difficulties of juggling work, studies, and family responsibilities will break a person. But you can achieve your doctoral degree through scholarships and grants!

This isn’t a new concept either, as millions of Ph.D. holders have also achieved such a lofty goal. Many of them have been scholars and fellows for most, if not all, of their studies – and it’s a path you can take, too, with plenty of planning and networking.

You have dozens, if not hundreds, of scholarship and fellowship opportunities in your field of study, not to mention the ones offered without restrictions as to the field of study. The trick here is to diligently look for these opportunities, applying to as many as you are qualified for, and complying with the requirements.

You may have to apply every semester or academic year for a new scholarship or fellowship, but it’s worth the time and effort. You could be lucky and be one whose studies were financed through scholarships and grants from year one, although luck has little to do with it because you spent time looking and qualifying for the scholarships you deserve!

Here, we present you with 50 of the Best Scholarships and Fellowships for Doctoral Students that we think are worthy of your consideration.

International funding - EPSRC

Overseas travel grants, introduction.

Overseas travel grants (OTGs) provide funding for:

  • international travel and subsistence to study new techniques at recognised centres outside the UK
  • travel to start or develop international collaborations

One potential use of an OTG, for example, is for travel to European centres to develop collaborations for bids to Horizon Europe.

Centre visits may be to overseas universities or industrial organisations. The scheme may not be used to support solely conference attendance.

There is no limit to the amount of funding which can be applied for, and no closing dates.

Eligible costs

As well as travel and subsistence, the project lead can request funds to cover their salary and indirect costs. Estates costs cannot be claimed on an overseas travel grant.

Neither consumables nor equipment – including laptops – would normally be funded under this scheme. The cost of visas may be included in the proposal.

Number of people

Overseas travel grants normally only support a single project lead. Other staff costs can be requested but should be fully justified.

Timing and grant length

There is no upper limit on the overall length of an OTG grant but we would not expect to support:

  • single visits of six months or more
  • multiple visits exceeding 12 months in total

If an OTG funding decision comes after the requested start date, the funding cannot be backdated.

EPSRC does not allow expenditure incurred before the announcement date to be charged to the grant, so please ensure that you leave enough time for processing before the first proposed visit.

Where you can go

There are no restrictions to recognised research centres you can visit, no matter what country, as long as it is outside the UK. The cost of visas can be included in the grant as well.

Funding researchers abroad to come to the UK as visiting researchers is not covered by the OTG scheme. However, these costs may be included in a standard research proposal.

Linking overseas travel grant proposals to EPSRC research grants

Overseas travel grants do not need to be linked to an existing EPSRC research grant, but it is expected that new techniques learned, or collaborations formed, will lead to future research proposals.

OTGs and New Investigator Awards

A project lead on an OTG is still eligible to apply for a New Investigator Award.

Who can apply

Overseas travel grants are subject to the same eligibility criteria as standard research grants. Check if you’re eligible for funding.

How to apply

How to apply for overseas travel grants .

Proposals are assessed through our peer review process. If strongly supportive reviewers’ comments are received, funding may be approved without the proposal going to a prioritisation panel.

We try to provide a fast turnaround OTGs, but please allow at least 16 weeks before the first proposed visit.

Further information

If you would like to discuss a possible proposal please check our staff contacts to find the Portfolio Manager responsible for your research area.

EPSRC cannot supply examples of successful OTG applications as proposals are submitted to us in confidence.

Headshot of Paul Byrnes

Paul Byrnes joined Emory in 2008 and guided efforts on faculty salary competitiveness, tuition planning and graduate student funding.

Paul Byrnes, vice provost for academic finance, will serve as the next senior vice chancellor of finance and administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, effective July 1.

Byrnes joined Emory as senior director of business services in 2008 before becoming the associate dean for finance and operations and chief business officer for the James T. Laney School of Graduate Studies in 2015. In 2018, he was appointed vice provost for academic finance within the Office of the Provost.

During his career at Emory, Byrnes led a wide range of initiatives focused on improving the university's financial and operational sustainability. He championed efforts to expand funding for graduate student stipends, revamp the tuition planning process, develop faculty salary equity and competitiveness analyses, and implement student lifecycle measures to complement Emory’s graduation and retention efforts.

Ravi V. Bellamkonda, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs , describes Byrnes as a collaborative team leader and strategic analyst who worked with Office of the Provost staff, academic deans and chief business officers across campus to continuously improve administrative structures and optimize financial and operational resources.

"We are grateful for Paul and his commitment to ensuring Emory properly stewards its finances and resources,” says Bellamkonda. “We will miss his valuable insights and dedication to collaborating with schools and units across the institution but are excited for him to serve in a senior leadership role at a flagship public university.”

For purposes of this Public License, the rights specified in Section   2(b)(1)-(2)   are not Copyright and Similar Rights.
  • Effective Technological Measures   means those measures that, in the absence of proper authority, may not be circumvented under laws fulfilling obligations under Article 11 of the WIPO Copyright Treaty adopted on December 20, 1996, and/or similar international agreements.

  • upon express reinstatement by the Licensor.
  • For the avoidance of doubt, the Licensor may also offer the Licensed Material under separate terms or conditions or stop distributing the Licensed Material at any time; however, doing so will not terminate this Public License.

Section 7 – Other Terms and Conditions.

  • The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional or different terms or conditions communicated by You unless expressly agreed.

  • To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. If the provision cannot be reformed, it shall be severed from this Public License without affecting the enforceability of the remaining terms and conditions.
  • No term or condition of this Public License will be waived and no failure to comply consented to unless expressly agreed to by the Licensor.
  • Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be interpreted as a limitation upon, or waiver of, any privileges and immunities that apply to the Licensor or You, including from the legal processes of any jurisdiction or authority.

Federal Student Loan Interest Rates Will Hit Some Record Highs

Eliza Haverstock

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Federal student loan interest rates will reach record heights for the 2024-25 school year, increasing the cost of college for people who will take out student loans, according to a May 14 Education Department announcement.

Here’s how 2024-25 federal student loan interest rates will compare to 2023-24 rates:

Undergraduate direct loans will have a 6.53% interest rate, up from 5.50%.

Graduate and professional direct loans will have an 8.08% interest rate, up from 7.05%

PLUS loans, available to parents and grad students to fill in funding gaps, will have a 9.08% interest rate, up from 8.05%.

Since 2006, all federal student loans have fixed interest rates. Undergraduate direct loan interest rates haven’t been this high in 16 years, since the 2008-09 academic year. (The standing record is 6.8%, for loans disbursed between 2006 and 2008.) Interest rates on direct graduate loans and PLUS loans have never been this high.

The upcoming federal interest rate hikes may also affect students already dealing with major FAFSA errors and delays , adding another layer of uncertainty about the true price of college in 2024-25. For some students, private student loans with lower interest rates may look more attractive — but private loans come with fewer borrower protections and no forgiveness options.

Rising rates increase total cost of college

Each spring, the government sets federal student loan interest rates for the academic year ahead. The rates are effective July 1 and will apply to all borrowers who take out new federal student loans for the 2024-25 school year. Federal student loans have fixed interest rates, so they won’t change during the repayment period — which typically lasts from 10 to 25 years, depending on your repayment plan. (If you’re already repaying older student loans, this interest rate hike doesn’t affect you.)

Ultimately, higher interest rates will make college more expensive for the millions of college students and their families who take out loans. Today, about 43 million people collectively owe $1.6 trillion in outstanding federal student loans — and federal loans account for about 93% of the total debt, per an analysis of Department of Education and Federal Reserve data. That total is poised to grow: 2024 high school graduates heading to college this fall could amass about $37,000 in student loan debt while pursuing their bachelor’s degree, according to a recent NerdWallet analysis . Dependent undergraduate students can take out no more than $31,000 in federal loans, so more students may turn to private loans to fill the gaps.

Here’s an example of how the higher interest rates can hit your wallet. If you start college in the fall and borrow $31,000 worth of unsubsidized federal direct loans over the course of your undergraduate education with a 6.53% interest rate, you’ll wind up paying back about $42,315 under a standard 10-year repayment plan. If you’d started college in 2020-21 and taken out the same $31,000 in unsubsidized federal loans with a record-low 2.75% interest rate, you’d have had to repay around $35,510 over 10 years — a $6,805 difference.

In practice, you could pay even more. You can’t borrow the full $31,000 at once — the capped amount is split up over the years you’re in school. If you’ll be a college freshman in the fall, interest rates could increase in the three (or more) years to follow.

Run the numbers with a student loan calculator to see how much your debt may cost over time.

Federal vs. private student loan interest rates

In recent years, federal student loans have offered lower interest rates than private alternatives — but that may no longer be true for some borrowers. Currently, private student loans for undergraduates have interest rates from 3.85% to 15.9%, according to an April 2024 NerdWallet analysis.

To qualify for the lowest rates, borrowers must have a high credit score. Many students will need a parent with excellent credit to co-sign the loan and accept equal legal responsibility for repaying it.

Federal student loans don’t allow co-signers, and only federal PLUS loans require a credit check. Other federal student loan borrower protections not typically offered by private lenders include:

Repayment plans that cap monthly bills at a certain percentage of your income, such as the new SAVE repayment plan . SAVE can forgive smaller amounts of debt in only 10 years, and give borrowers $0 bills if they earn a lower income.

Extended payment pauses, like a student loan deferment or forbearance , for financial hardships. (Private loan forbearances are generally shorter and more difficult to qualify for.)

Loan forgiveness programs, like Public Service Loan Forgiveness .

Loan discharges for borrowers whose school closed or defrauded them.

As a general guideline, borrowers should prioritize federal student loans. If they still have remaining costs, private student loans are a good option to fill in the gaps.

Submit the FAFSA to minimize borrowing

Minimize your total college debt and interest payments by leaning on funding sources you won’t have to repay, like scholarships, grants and work-study.

You must submit the FAFSA for each year you’ll be in school to qualify for most grants and work-study. That includes the federal need-based Pell Grant , which can give you up to $7,395 per year in free money to pay for college. Many scholarships require applicants to submit the FAFSA. You also need to submit the form to be eligible for federal student loans.

The new, redesigned FAFSA is open until June 30, 2025, for the 2024-25 school year, but you should fill it out as soon as possible to increase your chances of getting more money — some types of aid draw from limited pools and can run out.

Emily Loveland Ph.D. Candidate, School of Social Work

"Reframing The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): Applying a Human Rights Framework to Federal Food Assistance in the United States"

Emily Loveland, MSW is a doctoral candidate at the UConn School of Social Work. She has worked at and with the Connecticut Department of Social Services (DSS) for over 11 years. She began her career at DSS directly administering SNAP, cash and Medicaid programs and was perplexed by the rigid eligibility requirements and bureaucratic environment that accompanied social services. As she progressed to a SNAP policy consultant, she began to further understand the landscape of the social safety net at the federal and state level and how it clashed with many social work values and human rights principles. This led Emily to pursue her doctoral studies, focusing on social services, food insecurity, and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from a human rights lens.

Application Deadline for 2024: April 1st

Evaluation of Applications

The dissertation project should demonstrate overall excellence with a focus on human rights issues, understood broadly. The dissertation research is expected to make a significant contribution to the scholarly, policy or practice literature in human rights. Priority will be given to applications that evidence human rights coursework and/or prior substantive human rights engagement.

Students are encouraged to use the award as support for activities related to dissertation research, including data collection and travel.

All proposals will be reviewed and ranked by a multidisciplinary review committee chaired by the associate director of the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute and comprised of members of the Gladstein Human Rights Committee. The number of grants will depend on the number of applications ranked ‘excellent’ by the review panel.
