newspaper essay in english

Importance of Newspaper Essay: 500 Words

Introduction:.

Newspaper is an important media. Its role in the making of the nation or the state cannot be denied. Newspaper lays emphasis on democracy by way of representing public opinions quite objectively. Its approach is certainly impersonal. Objective criticisms of state affairs lead the public to choose the right ways and to uphold the right ideas.

Importance:

Social, political, economical, and other changes take place due to the awareness of the people of a state or a country. And newspaper enables people to be aware of all phenomena which are happening in the country and abroad. Besides, newspaper presents the past and the present days, thereby helping us draw a contrast between the past and the present world. By this way, newspaper helps people predict the future.

Thus, reading of a newspaper strengthens one’s consciousness of the world. If one negates the newspaper, there is little doubt that he or she must retard gradually. The utility of newspaper is not only informative but also constructive because it presents diverse, contradictory views to form a general and well-accepted opinion.

Newspaper is also a common medium of advertisement. Popular brands use to promote their product through newspaper advertisements.

Disadvantages:

But unfortunately, most of the newspapers have now become commercial. Advertisements have been quite oddly covering most of the pages of a newspaper. Political issues and news have been disproportionately highlighted. The news of scientific discovery and the narrations of the lives of the scientists have not been emphasized in the newspaper.

Consequently, reading of newspaper nowadays seems to be rather dull and boring. Even the reporting often misleads the public. What is most ignominious is that some of the leading newspapers are now politically biased. It causes bad effects to the mind of people. People, therefore, begin to lose faith in newspapers. A certain kind of chaos is now being created because of the subjective reporting and unjustifiable information.

Conclusion:

The most hideous consequence of this commercial attitude is that readers of newspapers are now divided. Certain newspapers uphold certain political views in order to draw the attention of certain people. None can begin to read a newspaper with the strictest sense of objectivity. But without the presence of proper media, no nation can progress well. Therefore, the editors of newspapers must be aware of the fact that they are not only doing business but also doing noble jobs in the making of the nation.

Newspapers have been an integral part of human civilization for centuries, serving as a crucial source of information, entertainment, and public discourse. The origins of newspapers can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where scribes would handwrite news on papyrus scrolls or wooden tablets. However, the modern newspaper as we know it today emerged in the 15th century with the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg.

The first printed newspaper is believed to be the Relation, published in Strasbourg, Germany, in 1609. This was followed by the Avisa Relation oder Zeitung, published in Germany in 1618, which is considered the first regularly printed newspaper. From there, newspapers spread rapidly across Europe and eventually to the Americas, evolving into a powerful medium for disseminating news, opinions, and advertisements.

The evolution of newspapers has been a remarkable journey, reflecting the changing societal landscape and technological advancements. Initially, newspapers were handwritten or printed on simple presses, with limited circulation and content. As printing technology improved and literacy rates increased, newspapers became more widely available and influential.

The 19th century witnessed a significant transformation in the newspaper industry with the introduction of new printing techniques, such as the rotary press and linotype machines, which allowed for faster and more efficient production. This period also saw the rise of investigative journalism, with newspapers playing a crucial role in exposing societal injustices and holding authorities accountable.

The 20th century brought about further innovations, including the use of photographs, color printing, and the integration of radio and television news broadcasts. The advent of the internet and digital technologies in the late 20th century revolutionized the newspaper industry once again, leading to the emergence of online editions, multimedia content, and new business models.

How to Write a News Article That's Effective

It's similar to writing academic papers, but with vital differences

  • Writing Research Papers
  • Writing Essays
  • English Grammar
  • M.Ed., Education Administration, University of Georgia
  • B.A., History, Armstrong State University

Techniques for writing a news article differ from those needed for academic papers. Whether you're interested in writing for a school newspaper, fulfilling a requirement for a class, or seeking a writing job in journalism, you'll need to know the difference. To write like a real reporter, consider this guide for how to write a news article.

Choose Your Topic

First, you must decide what to write about. Sometimes an editor or instructor will give you assignments, but you’ll often have to find your own topics to cover.

If you get to choose your topic, you might be able to pick a subject related to your personal experience or family history, which would give you a strong framework and a dose of perspective. However, this route means you must work to avoid bias—you may have strong opinions that could affect your conclusions. You also could pick a topic that revolves around a personal interest, such as your favorite sport.

Research for Your News Article

Even if you end up with a topic close to your heart, you should begin with research, using books and articles that will give you a full understanding of the subject. Go to the library and find background information about people, organizations, and events you intend to cover.

Next, interview a few people to collect more information and quotes that give perspective on the topic. Don't be intimidated by the idea of interviewing important or newsworthy people—an interview can be as formal or informal as you want to make it, so relax and have fun with it. Find people with backgrounds in the topic and strong opinions, and carefully write down or record their responses for accuracy. Let the interviewees know that you will be quoting them.

Parts of a News Article

Before you write your first draft, you should be aware of the parts that make up a news story:

Headline or title

The headline  of your article should be catchy and to the point. You should punctuate your title using Associated Press style guidelines unless your publication specifies something else. Other members of the publication staff frequently write the headlines, but this will help focus your thoughts and maybe save those other staffers some time.

  • "Lost dog finds his way home"
  • "Debate tonight in Jasper Hall"
  • "Panel chooses 3 essay winners"

The byline is the name of the writer—your name, in this case.

Lead (sometimes written "lede")

The lead is the first sentence or paragraph, written to provide a preview of the entire article. It summarizes the story and includes many of the basic facts. The lead will help readers decide if they want to read the rest of the news article or if they are satisfied knowing these details.

Once you’ve set the stage with a good lead, follow up with a well-written story that contains facts from your research and quotes from people you’ve interviewed. The article should not contain your opinions. Detail any events in chronological order. Use the active voice —not passive voice —when possible, and write in clear, short, direct sentences.

In a news article, you should use the inverted pyramid format—putting the most critical information in the early paragraphs and following with supporting information. This ensures that the reader sees the important details first. Hopefully they'll be intrigued enough to continue to the end.

The sources

Include your sources in the body with the information and quotes they provide. This is different from academic papers, where you would add these at the end of the piece.

Your conclusion can be your last bit of information, a summary, or a carefully chosen quote to leave the reader with a strong sense of your story.

Russian firms bought spare parts for 25-year-old asml machines, says newspaper trouw.

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Russian firms were able to obtain spare parts for 25-year-old ASML chipmaking machines in 2022 to 2023 on secondary markets despite European Union sanctions, Dutch newspaper Trouw reported on Thursday, citing Russian customs documents.

ASML, Europe's largest technology firm, dominates the market for advanced lithography systems, which use light beams to help create the circuitry of chips.

Although its 1990s-era tools are not considered "dual use" equipment with potential military applications, they would still be useful for Russian companies making analogue chips for the country's war in Ukraine, including for drones.

However, following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, European sanctions have blocked sales of electronics equipment to Russia.

ASML told Reuters that it abides by the sanctions, and that even before they were imposed, it had sold few tools in Russia.

"ASML doesn’t sell products or services to Russia and doesn't interact with Russian distributors. Nothing has been sent by ASML to Russia in recent years and sanctions restrict the sale of PAS and Twinscan systems, as well as spare parts, to Russia" it said in an emailed response to queries.

The Trouw story focused on ASML's PAS-5500 tools, which date from the 1990s and 2000s, when ASML was an up-and-coming challenger to the top companies of the day, Japan's Nikon and Canon. It said Russian trading firms bought the spare parts through Chinese middlemen.

Reuters was not able to independently verify the report.

The PAS-5500 is no longer being built, but most of those made in the past are still in operation. Used machines are sometimes sold or refurbished and ASML makes and sells spare parts to accredited owners.

The Trouw story said it had viewed documents showing 170 instances of relevant spare parts being imported by Russian firms. It said the firms involved declined comment while the Chinese vendors were untraceable.

Boar's Head faces multiple lawsuits after its deli meat is linked to deadly listeria outbreak

By Sarah Metz

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: September 6, 2024 / 2:16 PM EDT / CBS News

Boar's Head faces at least seven lawsuits following the August recall of millions of pounds of its deli meat after the food company's products were linked to a deadly listeria outbreak.

The latest listeria outbreak has grown to 57 hospitalizations in 18 states linked to recalled products from Boar's Head plant in Jarratt, Virginia. At least nine deaths have been reported: two in South Carolina and one each in Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, New Mexico and New York.

The actual number of people sickened during the outbreak is likely higher than what has been reported, while people in other states also may have been affected, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • Bugs, mold and mildew found in Boar's Head plant linked to deadly listeria outbreak
  • As Boar's Head recall-linked death toll climbs, here's what to know

Federal food inspectors found dozens of violations at Boar's Head Virginia facility, including mold, mildew and insects  throughout the site, CBS News' Alex Tin reported.

"We are conducting an extensive investigation, working closely with the USDA and government regulatory agencies, as well as with the industry's leading food safety experts, to determine how our liverwurst produced at our Jarratt, Virginia, facility was adulterated and to prevent it from happening again," Boar's Head said in an Aug. 29 statement, noting that its has suspended production at the plant.

"We will not resume operations at this facility until we are confident that it meets USDA regulatory standards and Boar's Head's highest quality and safety standards," the company added.

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can spread through water, mist, on workers clothes and hands and improperly sanitized equipment. The threat of listeria has been well-known and documented in the industry for decades. In 2002, for example, a listeria outbreak in turkey deli meat was linked to eight deaths and three "fetal deaths" among pregnant women, according to an account published by the National Library of Medicine.

The USDA has a "zero tolerance" policy for listeria in ready-to-eat meats, meaning any amount of contamination renders the product unsafe for  consumption .

The lawsuits against Boar's Head, involving claims of personal injuries, wrongful death, and deceptive marketing practices, seek damages ranging from $25,000 to over $5 million. The following people around the U.S. have filed suit against the company:

  • Ashley Solberg, Minnesota. Solberg, who was 35 weeks pregnant at the time, bought Boar's Head deli meat in Florida in late May 2024, according to her lawsuit. After returning to Minnesota, she fell ill with a listeria infection that matched the outbreak strain, and was hospitalized for six days and treated with antibiotics to prevent harm to her unborn child, the complaint alleges. The lawsuit accuses Boar's Head of manufacturing defects and negligence, seeking over $75,000 in damages.
  • Sue Fleming, Missouri. Fleming alleges she became gravely ill after consuming Boar's Head liverwurst in June of 2024. She spent nine days in the hospital and an additional 11 days in rehabilitation, according to her lawsuit. The suit, filed by Fleming and her husband Patrick, claims negligence and breach of warranty, and is seeking over $25,000 in damages. Fleming continues to suffer from neurological symptoms and weakness.
  • Gunter Morgenstein, New York. Morgenstein was 88 when he died on July 18 after consuming Boar's Head liverwurst earlier that month, a lawsuit filed on his behalf alleges. According to the complaint, his death was caused by sepsis and listeria meningitis after a 10-day hospitalization. The lawsuit alleges his death was a direct result of consuming contaminated deli meat.
  • Jeffrey Scott Cox, Alabama. Cox alleges that after consuming Boar's Head bologna, he developed severe neurological symptoms, including facial drooping and breathing difficulties. As of mid-August he remained hospitalized and on a ventilator, while his long-term prognosis unclear, according to court documents. The suit, filed by Cox's mother, is seeking more than $75,000 for alleged violations of Alabama's product liability law and negligence.
  • Rita Torres, New York. Torres' lawsuit, filed as a class action on behalf of consumers in New York, alleges that Boar's Head misled the public by failing to warn them about the listeria contamination. Torres seeks more than $5 million in damages, claiming that the company's recall efforts were also insufficient. "[T]his recall was deliberately designed to preclude the vast majority of consumers from receiving a recall," the suit alleges.
  • Sheryl Gatoff, California. Gatoff's suit, filed as a class action, claims Boar's Head failed to disclose the potential presence or risk of listeria in its products. Among other things, the company's packaging did not list any warnings, a violation of California consumer laws, the suit alleges.
  • Samantha Chuskas, Illinois. Chuskas' suit, filed as a class action, alleges false advertising by Boar's Head and that its marketing falsely presented the contaminated products as safe for consumption.

German police investigate reports of alleged match-fixing in lower-league soccer games

  • Copy Link copied

DÜSSELDORF, Germany (AP) — Police in Germany are investigating potential match-fixing in lower-league soccer games after a newspaper reported that the scores of allegedly fixed games may have been sold online for betting purposes.

The Hamburger Morgenpost newspaper reported Friday that message logs detailed the apparent sale on the “dark web” of information up to 17 games ranging from the third division to regionalized fifth-tier competitions.

The newspaper didn’t publish the messages and didn’t identify any games or teams, but said some games included refereeing mistakes or unusual goals.

Police in the southwestern state of Saarland said in an emailed statement they were investigating one game which had taken place there.

Prosecutors in the state capital, Saarbrücken, said the investigation followed information about the potential manipulation of lower-league games across Germany “presumably for the purpose of facilitating sports betting fraud.” The prosecutors’ office did not identify the game in question, citing a need to protect the ongoing investigation.

Police in the central German state of Hesse told German news agency dpa that they were examining two games which took place there.

The German soccer federation said in an emailed statement that it was in contact with the authorities regarding possible match-fixing but did not yet have “robust information” about specific cases.

Trump, Trailing Among Women, Lashes Out at His Female Accusers

Mr. Trump’s news conference had little to do with the issues in the 2024 presidential race, and seemed like more of a venting exercise over his frustrations about his legal travails.

Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit and red tie, stands in front of American flags. He speaks into a microphone at a podium.

By Maggie Haberman

  • Sept. 6, 2024 Updated 7:28 p.m. ET

If any voters had forgotten that Donald J. Trump was accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, he spent roughly 45 minutes reminding them on Friday, eight weeks before Election Day.

At a lectern in the lobby of Trump Tower, Mr. Trump, flanked by seven of his lawyers, laid out years-old allegations from the women in detail as he denied that they were telling the truth. He had just attended a federal appeals court hearing related to a civil case in which he was found liable of sexually abusing and defaming a New York writer, E. Jean Carroll, decades earlier. Mr. Trump was not required to attend the hearing, but decided he wanted to.

When the hearing was over, he went to his eponymous building for what the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign called a “press conference.” But he ended it without taking questions, and the session — during which Mr. Trump criticized his rival, Vice President Kamala Harris, for avoiding reporters — was more like a venting exercise over his frustrations about his legal travails.

Mr. Trump — who is badly trailing with women voters in polling — used the time Friday to insult the lawyers working for him, saying he was “disappointed” in them before adding that they’re “talented,” as they stood, mute, in a row next to him. He declared that Ms. Carroll’s claim that a dress she owned may have had Mr. Trump’s DNA on it was inspired by Monica Lewinsky, referring to the White House intern whose life was forever changed after she had a sexual relationship with former President Bill Clinton. He couldn’t remember one of the accuser’s names, and spent time at the lectern searching for it through the rectangular note cards he held.

Of another accuser, Jessica Leeds, who alleged an assault on an airplane, he said, “She said I was making out with her. And then, after 15 minutes — and she changed her story a couple times, maybe it was quicker — then I grabbed her at a certain part and that’s when she had enough.”

He added, “Think of the impracticality of this: I’m famous, I’m in a plane, people are coming into the plane. And I’m looking at a woman, and I grab her and I start kissing her and making out with her. What are the chances of that happening?”

Small plane crash-lands at Petaluma airport

No injuries were reported after a plane crashed at Petaluma Municipal Airport around noon Thursday, police said.

The single-engine Mooney M20, occupied only by the pilot, was attempting to land on the runway; however, its “gear was not extended during the landing,” said Airport Manager Dan Cohen. It is unclear whether the problem was pilot or mechanical failure.

Moments after the crash, the plane was intact though its underbelly sat directly on the airport’s single runway. The lone occupant declined treatment at the scene, Cohen said.

Police received the initial call at about 11:58 a.m. and fire and police soon arrived on scene. They cleared out at about 1 p.m., said Petaluma police Lt. Matthew Parnow.

The Mooney is registered to Kevin Wheeler in Contra Costa County, according to the FAA Registry, however authorities did not say whether he was piloting the plane on Thursday. The aircraft’s certification is current.

The plane left Concord’s Buchanan Field Airport at about 11:33 a.m. and crash-landed in Petaluma at 11:55 a.m., according to data from FlightAware, a flight tracker website.

The weather forecast for the area showed calm winds increasing to 5 to 7 mph western winds this afternoon, which are generally safe flying conditions for the area.

An inquiry to the National Transportation Safety Board, an independent federal agency which investigates all civil aviation accidents in the United States, was not immediately returned.

Cohen said the airport contacted the NTSB “and they provided permission to remove the aircraft from the runway and will follow up with an investigation.”

It will be up to the aircraft owner to decide where the airplane is moved to, and it will require some repair, Cohen said.

This comes a few days after a pilot died in a fiery plane crash at Novato’s Gnoss Field Airport.

“These incidents don’t occur frequently and we’re just very thankful no one is hurt,” Cohen said. “The response from the first responders was amazing. We are very grateful.”

English-language press

St. Petersburg has a number of English-language publications of varying quality. The best-known and most widely available is the weekly St. Petersburg Times which, like its Moscow sister paper, combines local, international and business news with comment and a very good arts section. While somewhat amateur in comparison to the Moscow edition, The St. Petersburg Times is still of remarkably high quality for an expat publication. It's easy to find the paper in the lobbies of big hotels and in restaurants and bars catering to the tourist trade, and it's probably the best way to find out what's going on in the city during your stay. You can also see the paper on the Internet at www.sptimes.ru . The Times usually appears on Wednesdays, although this can change due to public holidays or special events.

The In Your Pocket series of guides to European cities also does a St. Petersburg edition. Although it isn't as entertaining as some of their other titles, the guide provides reliable and regularly updated advice on dining out and clubbing, written by experienced local expats. It also has several pages of concise and accurate travel tips, all presented in a usefully compact format. In Your Pockets are available free in some hotels, restaurants, and bars, and can be found for sale in some English bookshops. You can see all their guides at www.inyourpocket.com . In your pocket currently appears every two months.

The most extraordinary English-language publication is also one of the oldest. The Neva News has been running since 1992, mostly as an advertising vehicle for some dubious-sounding business ventures. Amongst the broken-English gems, it has a "Girl of the Month" competition and constant "Letters to the editor" full of extremely lavish praise for the publication. It's something of a St. Petersburg institution, and definitely worth a look for giggle. Sadly, it's a little bit harder to find than its rivals, but there's also an internet version: www.nevanews.com .

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan dies at 33

Rich Homie Quan wearing sunglasses and a checkered coat

Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who burst onto the hip-hop scene in 2013, died in Georgia, authorities said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner said in a statement that Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital notified its personnel Thursday of the rapper's death.

He was 33, the office said.

A cause and manner of death was not released. An autopsy has been scheduled for Friday, the medical examiner said.

The artist, whose given name is Dequantes Devontay Lamar, scored a big hit more than a decade ago with the song “Type of Way.” He followed it up in 2015 with “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh).”

Rapper Boosie Badazz posted about his friend’s death on social media .

He said the two had “GOOD ASS MEMORIES TOGETHER N THAT GO ALWAYS BRING A SMILE TO MY FACE. #restupquan.”

Boosie Badazz said the two artists were collaborating together before Rich Homie Quan's death.

Rich Homie Quan's family and his management representatives could not be reached for comment Thursday afternoon.

Mark Dantonio, the former head football coach at Michigan State University, posted a picture on X of him and Rich Homie Quan embracing after Dantonio's team won the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 2014.

"Type of way" became the squad's celebratory anthem for the season. Players and coaches danced to the smash hit in the locker room following their 24-20 win over Stanford University.

"RIP ⁦ @RichHomieQuan Special Time, Special Place with Special People," Dantonio wrote, ending the post with an emoji of praying hands.

That same year, Rich Homie Quan was named to rap publication XXL’s coveted inaugural Freshman Class, Variety reported . Others named by the magazine include Chance the Rapper, Ty Dolla $ign and Kevin Gates.

During his career, he was nominated for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards including best new artist and people’s champ award, Variety reported.

Rich Homie Quan also collaborated with other notable names in the industry such as 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane and Trinidad James.

CORRECTION (Sept. 5, 2024, 6:12 p.m. ET): A previous version of this article misstated Rich Homie Quan’s age. He was 33, not 34.
